FIRST DAY OF CLINICAL!
Nursing loves! Its been forever! I literally cant believe time is going by so quickly. I hope you guys are all having an amazing first couple of weeks, and hope your programs are going amazing.
Lots to catch up on! WOW IS SECOND YEAR DIFFERENT! LOL, i absolutely love it but it is sooo stressful but I think what I am doing differently this year is relaxing! Well trying to at least.
Haha, today was first day of clinical in Rehab Medicine. It was honestly such an amazing day! Never have I ever been able to be independent and really take on the nursing role. This new found responsibility is both exciting and frightening.
Sorry this post has been a bit short, currently been awake for over 18 and a half hours! LOL, see you beautiful babes soon!
xo.

This week let's talk about spina bifida and celebrate the fact that ~85% of babies born with myelomeningocele and its complications now survive into adulthood! Spina bifida is no longer a "pediatric" condition, as >50% of individuals with it are older than 18.

Q. What are the most common causes of death for individuals with spina bifida?
A. While myelomeningocele is a neurological condition, sepsis, pneumonia, and respiratory failure are currently the most common causes of death. We share this not to be pessimistic but rather realistic; bacterial infections (i.e. from UTIs, pressure injuries, and pneumonia) are common conditions that patients without SB also get. Our goal should be for individuals with congenital conditions to grow up and eventually pass away from old age, like Ellen Dibler, who until recently was the oldest known person with SB in the US. Spina bifida is a neural tube defect that typically occurs within the first 28 days of pregnancy and is why people with a uterus are recommended to take a daily folic acid supplement, even if they aren't anticipating getting pregnant, as ~50% of pregnancies are unplanned. ~166,000 individuals in the United States have Spina Bifida.

Today wrapped up the 6th Annual Virtual Teal on the Hill, which brought members of the Spina Bifida community together from across the U.S. to advocate for issues such as continued funding for the National Spina Bifida Program at the CDC; disability rights; and affordable and accessible health care, medical supplies, and technologies.
On December 28, 2020, HHS signed legislation with an additional $1 million for the NSBP, the first increase in seven years. Thanks to lobbying in 2022, Congress for the first time is requiring the CDC to prepare a report laying out the adult clinical care challenges people with Spina Bifida are facing.
