Registan. Samarkand, Uzbekistan by Caspar Tromp Via Flickr: The Registan is the historical heart of Samarkand and has remained its main square throughout the centuries. The first madrasah was built under the grandson of the infamous Amir Timur (Tamerlane), named Ulugh Beg (1417-1420). Unlike his grandfather, Ulugh Beg was more interestes in arts and science than military conquest. The other two madrasahs, the Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori, were built in the 17th century after some other Timurid monuments fell into disrepair. Together, all three madrasahs form a magnificent cityscape.

Sher-Dor Madrasah, Registan Square, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
“Sher-Dor Madrasah, which translates as possessing lions, was named after the mosaic motif on the upper part of its pishtaq portal. Reflecting each other on the right and left parts of the tympanum, it is a tiger-looking beast with a mane - some sort of a tiglon - pursuing some sort of a white fallow deer, and a segment of the personified sun over the tiglon’s back: either watching the hunting scene or just rising out.
This mosaic motif is unique to medieval Islamic historic buildings, since depicting animals and people is against sharia. However, the designers of the madrasah seem to have tried to find a compromise: the creatures are fantastical, and the human face of the sun has both male and female features.
Why Yalangtush Bahadur decided to use this motif, provoking Muslim clergy, is only a supposition. Some scholars say he wanted to highlight it because it was a popular Samarkand symbol of power, a Persian symbol Samarkand had borrowed. (Iran’s emblem before 1979 was a lion with the sun too.) By the way, today’s Samarkand seal features a snow leopard - another member of the large cats family... Whatever the reason was, the mosaic turned out to be a unique Central Asian piece of art and one of Uzbekistan’s identity emblems. Sher-Dor’s tiglon and the sun is even printed on the country’s 200-som banknote.” -http://www.centralasia-travel.com/en/countries/uzbekistan/places/samarkand/registan_square

The Registan in Samarkand, Uzbekistan was a public square and the centre of the medieval city. On three sides are madrasahs - places of learning - built between the 15th and 17th centuries.
Samarkand in the Middle Ages was prosperous, due to it’s position on the Silk Road, which ran from China to the Mediterranean.

Registan
A must-see in Samarkand (and in Central Asia) is Registan which was a public square bounded by 3 madrasahs decorated with beautiful majolica tiles and mosaics was once the commercial centre in medieval Samarkand. The three grand edifices are among world’s oldest preserved madrasahs (Islamic schools).
The Sher-Dor Madrasah’s entrance portal is unique to Islam (which prohibits depiction of live animals) has tigers (meant to be lions), deer and Mongolian-faces, Zorostrian-inspired suns.
This is featured on a 200 som bill (around 0.021 USD, 0.019 Euro).
Entering the madrasahs, it opens up into a lovely courtyard, common with madrasahs.
Most notable is inside the Tilla-Kara Madrasah’s (the middle one) mosque which is intricately decorated in blue and gold to symbolize Samarkand’s wealth.
The ceiling above looks domed but the roof is actually flat.
Ulugbek Madrasah is the oldest madrasah (built in 1420) was built by Ulugbek, the grandson of Timur. Besides being a sultan, Ulugbek was also an astronomer and mathematician who taught in this madrasah.
At night, Registan looks incredible all lit up.

Sher-Dor Madrasah was built on the Registan Square, Samarkand in 1619-1636. The name is translated as “Madrassah with Lions”. It is the distorted and exaggerated reflection of the Ulugbek Madrasah, which is located just opposite, on the western side of the Registan Square. The difference in age between them is 200 years. Sher-Dor has larger area and sizes, but it yields to its “elder brother” by the quality of finishing works.
On the outside and inside this Madrasah is decorated with bright ornaments of glazed brick, walls and towers are covered with majolica of various patterns of climber flowers and quotations from Kuran on Arabic. But some part of finishing is irretrievably lost, though scientists, historians and restorers try to recover the initial appearance of Sher-Dor Madrasah.

Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636) In the 17th century the ruler of Samarkand, Yalangtush Bakhodur, ordered the construction of the Sher-Dor (Persian: شیردار) and Tillya-Kori (Persian: طلاکاری) madrasahs. The tiger mosaics with a rising sun on their back, on the face of each madrassa arch are interesting, in that they flout the ban in Islam of the depiction of living beings on religious buildings, especially as they represent the more ancient Persian Mithraic religious motifs. There is a bit of Zoroastrianism influence in the architecture. . The Registan was the heart of the ancient city of #Samarkand of the Timurid dynasty, now in #Uzbekistan.
(Samarkand)
(Gur-e-Amir)

(The Registan)
根據維基百科,Registan(雷吉斯坦)在波斯語中是沙漠之意。

(Bibi-Khanym Mosque)

Bibi-Khanym Mosque is in need of some serious restoration work.
(Hazrat-Hizr Mosque)

The construction of the Tilla-Kori Madrassah was commenced in 1646 by the order of the Samarkand ruler Yalangtush Bakhadur and was finished only in 1660. It is the final building in the Registan architectural Ensemble. It was built on the site of caravan-saray, which had existed for over two centuries. The name of the Madrassah is derived from the rich golden decoration on the faсade. “Tilla-Kori” is translated as “decorated with gold”. Square-shaped building of the Madrassah fills the whole area between the Ulugbek Madrassah and the Sher-Dor Madrassah. The façade, faced to the square is symmetrical and consists of the high portal and two floors of arched niches, flanked with towers. Khudjras (cells), intended for students, look on the large inner yard.

Visit to Samarkand City - Samarkand Tours Operator – 998998520077
Visit to Samarkand City
This is the best Samarkand City tour for visiting this great city in just one day. Of all of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Uzbekistan, Samarkand is the most majestic: the squares were once filled with merchants from far and wide, and the halls of these grand buildings were walked by some of most important scholars of their time. Start with the Ulugbek Observatory, a museum dedicated to the achievements and work of scientists from generations past. Shahi-Zinda, a winding alley lined with intricately-decorated mausoleums, is the next stop, followed by Bibi-Khanum Mosque, still impressive even though it has laid in ruins for centuries. Registan Square is the crown jewel of Samarkand, a symbol of Samarkand’s history as a trade and cultural center on the Silk Road. Finish up the tour with stops at Siab Bazaar, perfect for wandering among vendors of dried fruits, colorful cloths, and freshly-baked bread, and Gur-Emir Mausoluem, the final resting place of Timur, one of the greatest rulers of Central Asia. For just one day, you’ll be back in the time of the Silk Road, walking the streets of Samarkand and seeing the monuments of this great city.
Samarkand is situated in the valley of the river Zerafshan. It is the second largest city of Uzbekistan and is of the same age as the city of Babylon or Rome.
The history of Samarkand is about 2,750 years old and has witnessed many upheavals during the times of Alexander the Great, the Arabic Conquest, Genghis-Khan Conquest and lastly Tamerlane’s. Hence, the culture of Samarkand was developed and mixed together with the Iranian, Indian, Mongolian and a bit of the Western and Eastern cultures.
Majestic and beautiful city Samarkand has a marvelous and attractive power. Poets and historians of the past called it “Rome of the East, The beauty of sublunary countries, The pearl of the Eastern Muslim World”. Its advantageous geographical position in the Zarafshan valley puts Samarkand to the first place among cities of Central Asia.
