back in the game with a bit of insanely last minute holiday rush. i've been busy slapping the shit out of some lovely new cups, tea bowls and yunomis with about 45 in total now nearly dry enough to bisque late tomorrow or Wednesday;
you're simply not living until you betch slap some shetbag clay!
and that little mishap with glaze in the kiln? got to play surgery earlier and successfully extracted the mess
it was that wonderful blue/green crystal glaze, but when most any fluid glass makes contact with kiln brick, it's a bubbly corrosive nightmare. saved some souvenirs to commemorate the first dip shit damage 😑
however, this provided a good time to patch some nuisance cracks that have been causing concern lately plus other fine tuning and maintenance to keep this giant crucible chugging along smoothly! my go-to shop was out of kiln patch compound but with most anything ceramics, such things can be made from source materials, and i found a great and simple refractory [doesn't melt even beyond 2400°f] brick patch!
so my yet-to-be-officially-named baby is currently running a quick bisque temp firing to seal the deal before going full speed ahead during the next week. beginning to mentally prepare for a breathless glazing marathon later this week.
there's gonna be a lot of unicorn cum just ahead...

Researcher offers increased understanding of corrosion in lime kilns fired with biofuel
To reduce carbon dioxide emissions from lime kilns, there is a growing interest in introducing bio-based fuels as an alternative to fossil fuels. Naresh Kumar Wagri, Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, Umeå University, shows in his thesis that this presents challenges due to the different chemical and physical properties of biofuels. "The infiltration of ash slag that settles in the protective inner walls of the furnace is more extensive from biomass fuel than from coal fuel due to the different chemistry of the fuels," he explains. In industrial furnaces, boilers and incinerators where high temperature processes take place, an internal shell is needed to protect against the high temperatures and chemical attack. These linings are usually made from bricks of ceramic materials that can withstand high temperatures. Typical industries where these refractory liners are used are in metallurgy, quicklime production, cement production, glass production and the petroleum and energy sectors.

Types and application of carbon refractory raw materials
Carbonaceous materials have many advantages and are widely used in steel, non-ferrous metals, and other industries. Carbon has stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, good electrical conductivity, low linear expansion coefficient, strong thermal shock resistance, is not wetted by most molten metals, and has good wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It is used for refractory materials with high strength but easy oxidation. Carbon-containing refractories are typical neutral refractories, which can be made into fired carbon bricks, self-fired carbon bricks, silicon carbide bricks, and amorphous carbon ramming materials.
Carbon materials in refractory materials include common graphite, carbon materials, silicon carbide, etc.
1. Graphite
Graphite is the main raw material and an important component of graphite products (such as graphite clay products, and graphite silicon carbide products). China has the largest natural graphite reserves in the world. According to the crystalline form of graphite, it can be divided into flake graphite, block graphite, and unformed graphite.
2. Carbon materials
Carbon accouterments used in refractories include coke, anthracite, etc. Carbon materials are widely used in steelmaking, steelmaking, and non-ferrous smelting.
(1) Coke
Coke is an amorphous carbon. In industrial production, use bituminous coal or some substances with high carbon content (such as petroleum pitch, residual oil, coal tar pitch, etc.) to heat the air adiabatically to make it coke. The product of coal coking is metallurgical coke, the product of petroleum pitch or residual oil painting pitch is petroleum coke, and the product of coal navigator pitch coking is pitch coke. Metallurgical coke is mainly used as blast furnace fuel and reducing agent for steelmaking, and can also be used to produce various carbon blocks and carbon electrodes; the other two cokes are used relatively less.
(2) Anthracite
Anthracite is an important raw material for the production of carbon bricks, silicon carbide, carbon electrodes, electrode pastes, and bottom pastes.
3. Silicon carbide
Silicon carbide is also a very common refractory material with a wide range of applications. It can be used for refractory bricks and amorphous materials, effectively improving product quality and service life.

Benefits of Using Refractory Fire Bricks in the Industry
Different raw materials are used in the industries to create the end products. Every product is the result of some raw material and heating process in the factories. These raw materials get their value from the properties that are made of. These properties ensure that everything in the factory is going smoothly. Refractory bricks are one such product that plays a vital role in many processes.

Anthophyllite is a simple mineral because its chemical composition is made up of a relatively small number of elements. It is a magnesium iron silicate mineral that has the formula of (Mg2+-Fe2+)2(Mg4+-Fe2+)5[Si8O22(OH)2]. It forms out of dolomite environments in metamorphic rocks.
Anthophyllite was first observed in 1792 and it usually has a grey to greenish-brown color. It has a submetallic luster with white streaks. It can be found in some regions in Scotland and Norway, but it also occurs in Sweden and Finland.
The simplicity of anthophyllite is one of its advantages. It is relatively easy to identify and has few variations, making it easier to categorize and classify. Since it only requires a few elements to form, it is considered a stable mineral. It is a part of a group of minerals classified as asbestiform because of its long fibrous structure, which is why it is sometimes used in a variety of commercial products.
Anthophyllite is also a durable and resilient mineral, making it highly resistant to weathering and chemical erosion. It is resistant to fire and heat, making it a good option for insulation in buildings. It is also sometimes used in the production of cement and refractory bricks for industrial use.
Overall, anthophyllite is an important mineral in both scientific research and industry. Its simple composition, easy identification, and high durability are all factors that contribute to its wide range of uses and applications.

Embrace the Cold with Modern and Traditional Fireplace Solutions
As the colder seasons approach, many homeowners turn to fireplaces to create warmth and ambiance. Modern fireplace solutions like electric fireplaces, refractory or fireproof brick, and royal fireplaces offer both style and practicality, helping transform any living space into a cozy retreat.
Electric fireplace logs provide a convenient and energy-efficient alternative to traditional wood-burning fireplaces. These logs are designed to mimic the appearance of real wood and flames, creating the same visual appeal without the hassle of smoke, soot, or constant upkeep. Electric log sets are perfect for those who want the aesthetic of a fire without the need for ventilation or extensive cleaning. Many models also include adjustable heat settings and remote controls, allowing users to enjoy the warmth and glow of a fire with the push of a button. Easy to install and maintain, electric logsets bring comfort and ambiance to any room, making them a popular choice for modern homes.
For traditional fireplaces, fire brick plays a crucial role in maintaining safety and functionality. Fireproof brick is a specially designed type of brick that can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it ideal for use in wood-burning fireplaces and stoves. It lines the inside of the fireplace, protecting the outer structure from the intense heat generated by the fire. Fireproof brick is also a key component in ensuring that heat is distributed evenly, allowing the fireplace to operate efficiently. Replacing worn-out fireproof brick is essential for maintaining the longevity of your fireplace and ensuring the safety of your home.
If you're seeking a high-quality, aesthetically pleasing option, consider the majestic fireplace. Known for their elegant designs and reliable performance, grand fireplaces come in various models, including traditional wood-burning, gas, and electric options. Grand fireplaces are designed to be both functional and visually appealing, making them a centerpiece in any living space. Their fireplaces are built for durability and offer features like efficient heat distribution, safety controls, and customizable designs. Whether you're upgrading your home with electric logsets, ensuring safety with fireproof brick, or investing in a royal fireplace, each option offers unique benefits that add both warmth and style to your home.
