Chapter 25 - Release the Ice Bath Thirst Traps
Ok guys! here we go!
TAG LIST IS CLOSED (sorry for those who have asked)
For the very end of the chapter, there's something I made up for Singapore (this fact is made up just for the story)
Like always comments, questions, concerns, inbox messages, reblogs, and likes are appreciated! Love you all and enjoy :D
The moment you stepped out of the cool, airconditioned car, your team shirt suddenly clung to you. Beads of sweat dripped from your forehead as you made your way through the paddock. Max had warned you that Singapore and Qatar would be impossibly hot: you just didn’t think it’d be this bad.
All you wanted to do now was go back to the hotel where it was ice cold. You wiped your brow with your forearm as you got closer to the garage. Giant fans welcomed you with air. It wasn’t freezing cold, but it would do. You were already on your third water today, smartly forgoing the Red Bull that was bound to make you dehydrated.
You stood next to Max as the team had a quick debrief. The heat was definitely getting to you, as you really couldn’t remember a word that anyone said. You blink your eyes as they were burning with sweat. Your older teammate could only offer you a remorseful smile.
Max could see that the heat wasn’t going too well with you. You had told him beforehand that some females, including you, just couldn’t regulate their temperatures as well as males could. Women often gave off more body heat than men did as well. This caused the Dutchman to send out a group text, warning the other drivers to look out for you.
You groaned as you tried to put on your fireproofs and race suit. The more you moved around, the more you seemed to sweat. You kept your suit tied around your waist. You definitely wouldn’t be putting it on until you had to be in the car.
Max was already zipped up by the time you returned.
“Here.” He handed you another ice cold water bottle.
“Thank you Max,” you croaked out, making the Dutchman look a little weary at you. You just smiled back.
“Once we qualify, we can go to the ice baths.”
Max would have thought that you would hate the idea since you always showered with the water at a boiling temperature. Yet, he could see that you were slightly “warming up” to the idea of a bath full of ice (pun intended).
From the corner, Mitch watched as you poured the remainder of your water on your head. She had requested a few ice packs to be ready for you when you arrived, but sadly they weren’t completely frozen. She’d make sure that you’d have them for tomorrow.
Surprisingly, your laps were great with you qualifying in P3, behind Charles once again. Halfway through, you had opened your visor, trying to get some air through your sweaty helmet. Your water pouch had to be refilled multiple times between sessions. Yet, your trainer advised you to try not to drink so much during the race, as they wouldn’t be able to refill.
Mitch had come over to your car as soon as you were back in. You gave her a big smile as you started to get out of the car.
“How are you doing kid?”
You took a moment to look at her outfit. Where a pantsuit should have been, there was a Red Bull Tank top and some very loose pants. You were jealous that she got to wear those while you were stuck with skin tight clothes.
You gasped a bit for some cooler air once your helmet was off.
“I’m good. Max said something about an ice bath?”
Your eyes were faintly glimmering with hope for something to cool you down. Mitch smiled at you.
“Yep. I put a change of clothes on your bed, but I think you need some help?”
You nodded at her question before heading to your room. You didn’t want to waste any time getting out of your suit.
The zipper came off smoothly. Mitch definitely saw that you had sweated through your fireproofs and felt terrible. Surely, there was something that the team could do.
You giggled. “I’ve probably already lost a few pounds.”
Mitch rolled her eyes at the terrible joke. If anything, there was truth in that statement. She had seen the numbers after you got weighed and you had lost a lot.
“Well, there will be lots of food for you to fill up on.”
“I hope we’re not going to go over the catering budget again.”
Mitch let out a snort as she helped you out of the sticky fire proofs. She pulled out a bag and handed it to you. You grinned at the sight of the limited clothes in the bag.
“I didn’t think that you’d want to go out in full bikini, so there’s a sports bra and some spandex shorts. I’ll wait for you by your door and will walk you to the back.”
Once Mitch left, you quickly peeled the rest of your clothes off. The sports bra and spandex were all black, and covered everything that needed to be. You said a quick thank you to her in your mind as you got dressed. Your skin was definitely cooler with no clothes to stick to, but you were still sweating.
You swung the door open.
“Ready to go?” you asked, giving her the bag back with your other clothes. They would definitely need to be washed by tomorrow.
You followed the woman to the back, going through multiple doors. Once she opened the door to the little outside area, your eyes landed on Max, who was already soaking. His eyes were closed as he leaned his head back on the tub.
Yours was a bit more like a giant trough, filled to the brim with ice.
Mitch spoke as you got closer. “We thought that you’d need more ice, hence why yours is bigger. It’s also more insulated with the metal than the plastic. Do not stay in more than 15 minutes. We don’t need your temperature dropping too much.”
You tossed your foot over and gingerly place a toe in, just to get a feel for it. The temperature was perfect and you found yourself sinking into the ice.
“You think it’s ok if I dunk my head?” you asked Max.
He didn’t even bother to open his eyes.
“Go for it kid.”
You held your breath as you sunk below the ice layer. Your brain went a bit fuzzy as the freezing water went over your scalp. You let your eyes open under the water, just to feel the cold and relieve the stinging.
Once you came up gasping for air, Max finally looked over.
“Had fun?” He laughed a bit.
You lovingly flipped him off. Your hands came and brushed your hair back. You looked over at Max’s plastic pool, and saw ducks in his. You pouted once you realized that you didn’t have any.
“What’s wrong kid?” the Dutchman asked at the sight of your pout.
You murmured, “I didn’t get any ducks.”
Max rolled his eyes before gently throwing one of his ducks into your pool. Your eyes immediately lit up as you began to play with it. Max just watched as you found so much joy in something so little. You felt his gaze and you guessed that you needed to say something.
“I never had a rubber duck growing up. It’s so cute.”
You held the little yellow thing in your hands, right in front of your face. Max had a sad smile as he watched.
“You have plans for after the race?”
You sighed as you let the duck rest on the water, not breaking the surface tension.
“Logan, Oscar, and Lando wanted to go see the city and I said I’d join them. Something about needing a good drive around Singapore.”
Max snorted. Of course the group of three would want to invite you. The door opened, which had the two of you whip your heads to it.
“Oh, hey David,” you greeted the photographer. You sank back into the ice, still enjoying the cold. Max groaned when he realized what David was there for.
You smirked as you looked over at your teammate. “Ready to do some thirst traps Max?”
The Dutchman rolled his eyes. “Let’s leave that for Ferrari and Lando.”
You giggled at the statement. “Yeah, I would rather not show much on screen. Taken woman and all.”
That time, Max laughed.
David looked apologetic. “Just need to get some pictures. Trust me, this isn’t my favorite.”
He took some pictures while you and Max tried to look as non-sexy as possibly. You definitely tried to sneak some goofy facial expressions in. You kept your whole body submerged and thankfully the ice kept anyone from seeing much below your neck. David quickly thanked the two of you for your time before leaving.
“Instagram is going to have a field with those.”

You snorted at the Dutchman’s bluntness.
The timer on the wall signaled that it was time to get out. You let out a giant groan as you stood and climbed over.
Mitch came in with two big towels. One for you and one for Max. Your skin was finally covered with goosebumps instead of sweat. You quickly had an idea as you walked back to put normal clothes on.
“You think I could dunk my head in before I get in the car? I think my wet hair will keep my head cooler if I do. It’s something about heat escaping through your scalp when you overheat. If it’s covered by my balaclava and my helmet, it can’t escape.”
Mitch finished your thought process.
“So if you wet your hair, your scalp can be cooler longer.”
You nodded before heading into your room.
“Ah, Max wanted me to hand this to you.”
It was a normal Red Bull polo, which made your brows pinch in confusion. But, you shrugged and took it anyways.
However, once you started changing you realized that the shirt was almost three sizes too big. Yet, you grinned as you put it on. Since it was oversized, it wasn’t sticking to your skin as you started to sweat a little.
The crew laughed a bit at the sight of the giant shirt almost swallowing you. But, you didn’t care about that. You were significantly cooler and you could follow the last debrief of the day.
Sunday night came and went super-fast, and you were thankful this time around. You were definitely more cool that you had been for qualifying. Mitch had sent the ice vest to you early, so you didn’t start off too warm. With your hair being dunked in ice water, your head was cooler during the race. The little bit of breeze that you got helped as well.
That bit really helped you stay focused as you gained another podium. Surprisingly, this was Max’s first time winning in Singapore. Adrian really made sure that the car could keep up with the street race and not end it like 2023. Charles came in a very close second.
Charles and Max poured their champagne bottles onto your overheating body. Halfway through you needed to sit down. Your body was slowly becoming even more dehydrated and hot as the minutes passed by. You were kind of held by Max as the three of you left the podium.
The Dutchman had a worried grip on your bicep as he held you upright. He needed to get you some water, quickly. You thankfully weren’t on the verge of passing out, but he knew you were thirsty. He heard your radio toward the end where you were just begging for a drink. Max couldn’t imagine being without water, but he normally didn’t drink as much while racing.
He gently set you on a seat in the garage, before turning away to get some things. Your eyes were closed as you sat right under a fan. Max soon returned with a cooling towel and three bottles of water.
The cold of the towel made your eyes open as he put it on your neck. Your race suit was tied around your waist and your fireproof shift had been swapped for a thin, random oversized shirt. Max gently cooed as you leaned into the cold water bottle on your face.
“There you go,” he whispered as you finally were able to take big gulps of water. He unscrewed one of the other bottles before he lightly tipped it over your head. Streams of water ran down your face as you finished off the water bottle.
The team was glancing at the two of you. In the back of their minds, they were worried about how you’d react to Qatar, which was way worse. However, they held on to some hope that it would be cooler than last year due to it being moved later on the race calendar.
Your water bottle was on in moments. You flashed a smile at your worried teammate.
“Thanks,” you gasped, trying to catch your breath after guzzling.
Mitch came from the back with another woman who was holding a device. Mitch kneeled next to Max and put her hand on your knee.
“Hey kid, we just want to make sure that you’re okay. Brianna here is going to take your blood pressure and other vitals just to be safe.”
You only nodded and leaned your head against the wall. The medic made quick work and started to strap the device on. Max stood up and walked a bit away, just to give everyone some space. His eyes caught glimpses of orange, red, and blue and he could only guess who it was. He took one more glance at the situation before walking out of the garage.
Logan, Charles, Lando, and Oscar were waiting patiently by the opening. They all looked up once they heard Max walk out, but deflated when they realized it wasn’t the Red Bull driver they were looking for.
“Is she doing okay?” Charles asked first, concerning the other three boys.
Lando put his arms out, stopping any conversation.
“What does he mean by ‘is she doing ok?’ Where’s Y/n?” the Brits voice going more high pitched the more he started to panic.
Max sighed. “She’s just having a hard time with the heat. She got super dehydrated this weekend and really couldn’t get over it.”
He pointed a thumb over his shoulder.
“They’re just checking vitals I think, to make sure everything is ok.”
Logan sighed loudly in concern. He definitely knew what it was like, getting memories from Qatar 2023.
The American asked, “Is she going to race in Qatar?”
Max blinked slowly before answering. “She wants to. The team is really hoping that it’s going to be significantly cooler than last year. And they know to get her started on hydration much earlier. I talked to her physio and she thinks that Y/n’s diet also wasn’t right.”
Oscar raised his eyebrows. “Diet?”
Max nodded. “Yeah. She was apparently eating foods that might dehydrate the body, like lots of salt. Her physio said that she’ll start her on more fruits and water heavy foods way in advance. And drinks as well, more electrolytes.”
Lando nodded in agreement. “I remember when I had to do that. They took away my chips for like….months.”
They had been so into talking that they didn’t notice that you had walked out, now changed into shorter shorts and a bigger top (one that Charles strangely recognized as one of his brother’s shirts).
“Are we ready to go?” you asked, getting closer. “Lando is driving because I am done for today.”
The boys looked a bit guilty at your tired face.
Oscar spoke up first. “We don’t have to go driving if you don’t want to. We know you’re probably tired.”
You waved your hands and made a sound. “Nope, I’m good. Nothing will ever beat the one time I spent an entire summer on a farm in the middle of Texas.”
You pretended to shiver at the thought, making the group laugh.
Charles suddenly remembered why he was there in the first place (well, second because he was worried about you after the podium). He handed you a small bag. Opening it up, you saw a bright colored water bottle. You raised your eyebrow in question.
The Monegasque smirked. “From you know how.”
Your face practically melted at the loving gesture as you looked at it. Lando, Oscar, and Logan suddenly got the memo.
Logan wrapped an arm around you first. “Aww such a sweet little boyfriend.”
Oscar looked at Lando.
“Where’s my water bottle?” he mocked whined, batting his eyelashes at the Brit. Your rolled your eyes.
Lando put his arms around the Aussie. “Don’t worry love, it’s in the car.”
The Brit puckered his lips before pretending to lean in. You just watched with an annoyed grin on your face. You looked at Max and Charles and winked, the Dutchman and Monegasque getting what you were about to do. You shrugged Logan’s arm off before taking a step toward your teammate.
But, you purposefully made your knees buckle and fell into Max and Charles’s waiting arms. Lando and Oscar shut up quickly, before yelling that you needed help. Except that they heard your giggles as Max put you back on your feet.
“I was just kidding.”
The trio huffed.
Logan murmured, “That was not funny.”
Charles snorted. “Oh but it was. Should have seen your faces.”
Your giggled died out before you asked, “Are we ready to go? I think I’ll melt if I stand out here for any longer.”
Lando flicked your forehead. “We were just waiting on you.”
The four of you said your goodbyes to Max and Charles before heading to the parking lot. Somehow, Logan got his hands on a Jeep to take the four of you somewhere. And, he was even able to get the top off. And because he claimed it was an all American brand, Logan begged Lando to let him drive it. Lando reluctantly handed over the keys.
You claimed earlier that you needed shotgun, because “men can’t be passenger princesses.” Oscar and Lando tried to disagree.
The breeze from outside in addition to the cool air-conditioning from the car was perfect. You let everyone have their turn with the aux, praying that they wouldn’t pick anything too embarrassing.
Oscar ripped the phone out of your hands when Logan tried to request Free Bird again.
The Aussie sighed as the American whined.
“We are not having another shirt ripped or a speeding ticket.”
You laughed as Logan tried to hit Oscar in the back. At an empty road, Lando grabbed his camera.
“Bug, put your head out the window real fast.”
You did as suggested and smiled toward the camera that Lando was holding.
Immediately you had a sense of déjà vu. Except this time, it was actual friends in the car and not just your manager. You thought back to how far you’ve come since the night before going to Milton.
Lando laughed as he looked at the camera.
He spoke, “This reminds me about the time that me and my friends were driving around and then this car pulled up next to ours. They were blasting What Makes You Beautiful and there was this girl in the front seat.”
Your cheeks were becoming warm as Lando kept telling the story: that was definitely about you. Lando kept blabbing about the night.
“And then the next morning, I got out of my hotel elevator and I think the same girl literally bulldozed me over. Didn’t say sorry or anything. I just thought it was funny, she seemed like she was in a rush.”
Logan was laughing at the story, but got concerned at your flushed appearance and sudden quietness.
“You alright champ? Do we need to get you some more water?”
At the sound of the question, Lando and Oscar were leaning up, trying to look to see if you were going to actually pass out. Lando was already on his phone, trying to bring up Max’s contact to call just in case.
However, you started laughing, making the trio at ease. You tried to cover your giggles with your mouth. You had this bright look in your eyes.
“That was actually me Lando. Sorry about that.”
Lando’s jaw dropped at the reveal.
You gave a half shrug. “Arthur was waiting for me in my hotel room and I was excited to see him.”
Logan’s and Oscar’s shoulders were shaking as they kept laughing at Lando’s facial expressions. The Brit huffed and crossed his arms, mouth formed into a pout.
“You owe me a race win now.”
“Excuse you?”
“You heard me.”
“Uh, guys?” Logan asked, but you and Lando ignored him.
“Get your own race win. You’ve done it before.”
“Cause Max crashed out.”
“That’s not true.”
“Guys?” Oscar’s voice also sounded, worry in his tone.
“Lando, it’s really not that hard. You just go around him.”
“It’s a tractor versus a rocket ship. One cannot simply just go around.”
“GUYS!”
“What?” you and Lando yelled at the same time. Once the car was silent, you finally noticed that it had stopped moving.
“Logan why aren’t you driving?”
You looked at the American, who was slightly shaking while looking in the rearview mirror. Your eyes glanced at it, blue and red lights reflecting through the glass. You looked behind you and saw the source.
“Ah shit.”

no plastic waste from everyone needing to carry water bottles everywhere, being able to take medication on the fly if you're out longer than you expect, heck even free water for the homeless who otherwise might die of dehydration.
I get the problem in deserts, but when there's a bigass river rushing right through town there's not really any shortage. And everyone needs water to live.
I miss every establishment having a working, public drinking fountain

His large hands smooth along the polished wood of the bar and he smiles wryly.
“Been too long,” he drawls.
Ignorning his remark, you meet his eyes and lean back against the countertop.
“Are you just gonna stare or do you want a drink?”
Joel makes no indication he’s affected by your sassy words as he keeps his gaze trained on you.
You turn away and proceed to repeatedly stab the large block of ice in the cooler before dropping some into a glass and filling it with whiskey.
His favorite.
You slide it down the bar without a word.
“Thanks darlin’,” he murmurs, lifting the glass to his lips and watching you over the rim.
He finishes it in one long and slow sip. He raises his eyebrows and licks his lips, holding the glass out for more.
“Good, isn’t it,” you say as you give him a refill.
“I’ve missed you,” he whispers, swirling the glass on the bar top as his eyes drift languidly down your body.
With an exhale you round the bar, taking the bottle of whiskey with you and stopping by his stool.
“Yea well, it’s been too long,” you say, throwing his words from earlier back at him as you slam the bottle down near his glass.
Your steps are rushed as you make your way toward the door and push it open with a bang, heading back to your house down the street.
The cold wind whips around your face and you shiver, wincing when the drops of rain start to fall. You pick up the pace, unaware that Joel is not far behind.
You get inside and stomp up the steps, already working open the buttons of your wet shirt so you can change.
You’re so lost in your thoughts that you don’t hear him come in the house and when you turn and see him standing in the doorway of your bedroom you jump with a start and clutch your hand to your chest.
He gives you an apologetic and lopsided smile and you try to calm your racing heart, trying to ignore the real reason for it’s frantic beat.
“Guess I’m not the only one going deaf,” he huffs, his smile falling when you glower at him.
“What are you doing here?” you ask.
He steps closer, his gaze melting into heat as his eyes drop to your open shirt.
“I’ve missed you,” he murmurs, “I really have.”
“Joel…”
His gaze lingers on the sliver of your exposed skin, his steps tentative as he closes the distance between you.
You try to move around him but before you can he has your back pushed against the dresser. Your hands land on his chest.
“Joel,” you warn, but even you can hear how pitiful it sounds.
His intense stare wanders over your face before it drops lower. The muscle in his jaw flexes and he slowly lifts a trembling hand, his fingertips grazing the open side of your shirt and his knuckles brushing your skin.
Your breath hitches at his touch and it sends a shiver skittering down your spine.
“Too cold be in wet clothes darlin’,” he says softly.
You want to tell him to stop but the truth is you’ve missed him too and you’re forever craving his touch.
His eyes returns to yours.
“I’m sorry” he whispers as his other hand slides behind your neck to curl tightly around your nape so he can yank you hard against him.
“Joel,” you breathe out in a whisper along his lips.
“Fuck, I missed how good you feel,” he murmurs, his fingers biting into you.
He pushes your shirt from your shoulders and moves his hands over your bare skin, everything about his movements turning desperate the more of you he feels.
His touch silences any rational thoughts or fighting words you have left and you’re overwhelmed by desire. You feel his hand between your legs and let his fingers slip beneath the waistband of your pants until he’s pressing his thumb against you.
“Nothing feels better than this,” he pants, his eyes never leaving yours as he pushes a finger inside you.
You lift your hand to trace his jaw, your lips parted with your heavy breathing, and you tug him closer for a kiss.
That’s all it takes for him to lose control and he leaves your mouth to trail kisses down your throat, his grip bruising as he holds you in place with his free hand, his other still buried between your legs as his fingers push harder and deeper.
You pull your bottom lip between your teeth, stifling your moans and frantic pleas for more.
He growls low and deep, the action making you clench around his fingers, and he slides the hand at your neck across your cheek, grasping your chin between his fingers.
His thumb pulls your lip free of your teeth, his stare predatory.
“Let me listen to you come darlin’.”

How Would the Boys Show Affection to Someone With a Hyena Quirk
Pairings: Izuku Midoriya x reader, Shoto Todoroki x reader, Katsuki Bakugo x reader, Ejiro Kirishima x reader
Warnings: fluff, short and sweet, Izuku is just a shy boy, Shoto and Katsuki are a little subtle with their affection but Katsuki is more rough, Ejiro is just a lover boy, this was a request
A/n: Requests are closed! Sorry!!
Previous Part
———
A recap on the reader. The reader has a hyena/fire quirk. They have hyena ears and a tail, prolonged canines, claws, and are able to expel fire from their body and they run a little hotter than normal. Side effects are heightened hearing, cut lips from fangs, having to file down their claws, burn wounds, sensitive to warmer temperatures, the desire to eat a lot, and easier muscle gain
——
Izuku Midoriya
Izuku would show affection in subtle ways, refilling your water bottle even though it’s only half way gone, being you ice cold wash rags, and often coming to you after the weekend with your favorite snacks.
Even when you guys get into a relationship, I don’t really see Izuku getting more affectionate with that, with him being shy and all. Maybe he would indulge in some hand holding and hugs, but that’s really all. And in private maybe a couple forehead kisses as well.
——
Shoto Todoroki
I don’t see Shoto giving a ton of affection, but when he does it could be described as subtle/blunt affection. Having you walk on his cooler side after practice/during the warmer months of the year, handing you an ice cold water bottle, and cooking you large meals. I see him also indulging in a favorite of yours, his cold hand on your face. Not like on your cheek or anything, just like on your face.
Once you get into a relationship, nothing much would change. He’s still keeping you on his cold side and cooking you meals at the end of the day, maybe even bring you a few snacks at breaks during the day.
——
Katsuki Bakugo
Katsuki is very loud with his affection, and a little rough compared to others. Barking out compliments, keeping your water bottle filled, giving you snacks that either he’s got you for yourself or share some of his. Your and his relationship/friendship scares others. Your attitude often matches his, which results in bickering and the less often wrestling matches, often conducted outside.
Like the others, when in a relationship, nothing much changes, but Katsuki holds your band more than the previous boys and often runs your ice baths when the chance arises. And, because you two are closer, he sits next to you as much as he can. Sometimes he’s so close he’s almost on top of you, but you don’t mind.
——
Ejiro Kirishima
Ejiro is just smitten with you from day one. He’s feeding you compliments constantly, makes sure you have plenty of ice in your water bottle, that you have access to ice or cold wash rag right after practice, and feeding you snacks and meals at any chance he gets. Ejiro loves feeding you because he probably burns as much energy as you do, and the only way to upkeep energy is to eat, a lot.
Ejiro is a lot more physically affection when in a relationship. He’s holding your hand more and giving you hugs and cheek kisses. When you do something cool he often shouts “That’s my girlfriend!!” even if he’s on the complete opposite side of the teaming field.

I scurry as fast as I can. I cannot, under any circumstances, let them catch me— the
“them” being the police guards who keep “order” in the City Down Below. I feel beads of sweat drip down my neck in a rhythm. I am holding a bag full of sandwiches that was meant to be for a group of cemetery workers, however, I do not think that is a top priority anymore. The smell of decay throws me off guard as I continue to sprint, knowing I am closing in on said cemetery, a burning in my esophagus from the concrete air sifting. I weave through graves and tombstones trying my best not to disrespect the dead.
Beginning to feel fatigued, I try to think of the reason I am sprinting in the first place— actually, I do not remember this time. I could have swiped something or solely just glowered at the guards, who knows? I take a turn and encounter a dead end. I am fucked. My mouth feels like sandpaper and my throat like insulation. The wall looms over me menacingly and jeers my existence, there is nowhere else to go and the guards have caught up to me.
I am apprehensive about what is to come after finally being seized. Look up, there appears to be an alien ship above me, something I would draw as a child. A phantasmagoric antic, the saucer emitting a luminosity surrounding me. The guards aghast, dared not to interfere with whatever was occurring. I feel my feet begin to lift off the ground; feeling like air and my mind fuzzy. Everything around me turns white.
In the City Down Below we live a harrowing and rigorous life. Most of us wake up around 7 a.m. to attend work which includes farming, burying dead bodies, burning dead bodies, mining, and other mindless jobs. I got lucky delivering sandwiches for a deli. The city is meant for a “lower class” society, the scum of the world.
The Upper Ring serves The World Beyond, usually cooking food, playing music, painting, and other tasks that could be of use or entertainment for The World Beyond (or so I’m told).
The World Beyond, however, is a whole other ball game. Everyone up there is beyond intelligent and physically exceptional to all of us beneath. I wish it could change someday, however, I am aware of how implausible that is. It is so barbarous to put some humans on a pedestal above others just because they are deemed as “worthy.” I’ve never seen the World Beyond, but I know those entitled bastards do not understand how lavish their lives are.
Connecting them all is the labyrinth. Two ways in the labyrinth connect the cities: one is a transit unit connecting the Upper Ring to the World Beyond, most of it runs outside so we can see it from down below, and the other is a physical labyrinth with tunnels throughout, almost impossible to get through. Some people from the City Down Below can enter but those are the sanitation workers and they are only allowed to stay in a certain area. Even if they wander off they would get lost.
Down here, the only thing I have going for me is my collective of colleagues. We all live in an abandoned warehouse, with cots lining the floor, a single cooler in the center of the room with bottles of water filling the brim all being used over and over again refilled with rainwater. We have a space on the roof that accommodates all the canned goods we can find. We care for each other and make sure we have a chance to survive. None of us have a family to turn to, thus we found a family with each other. The older kids take care of the younger, and some of us find jobs to aid in providing. It truly has been hard for all of us but regardless we have prevailed.
When I was younger I watched a group of elitists from the World Beyond capture and kill them right in our home. They took my younger brother with them as well, leaving me by my lonesome. The image of the corpses of my parents lay etched in my brain forever and the face of my younger sibling blurred in every memory.
**************
I open my eyes. Where.. am I? I sit up from the frigid table I was lying on. Turning my head, I see an accumulation of people engaging in physical activities; a woman jogging on a conveyor belt, and a man lifting a metal bar with weights on it. I am in my own separate room but it is detached from the rest of the area by a glass wall. The rest of the walls are painted a clean, white color, reminding me of the concatenation from before.
I sit up. How did I get here? More importantly, where am I? I have never seen this room before nor do I recollect how I got here. I am no longer in the City Down Below.
I descend off the table and try to interpret what is going on. I make my way out of the room, everyone halting whatever they are doing to stare back at me but more in an appalling way than befuddled. I analyze what they’re all wearing, and it's nothing like I’ve ever seen before. It is all immaculate and sleek, whites layered with more white, occasionally a light gray. Nothing is corrugated, shredded, or disheveled.
I find my way out and immediately get bombarded with a great fluorescence piercing my eyes. As soon as they adjust everything in front of me materializes properly. Altitudinous, white buildings tower over the whole plaza, people milling around, conversing with one another, laughing at jokes. Foliage, which only seemed like a myth before, greets every corner of the circle, the ground erupting with stone, a fountain gurgling out fresh water, and the air is pure and clear. The breeze benevolently kisses my cheeks, not too warm and not too cold, gently and sweetly; inhaling it feels like exhaustion on the likes of me.
It suddenly dawns on me where I am: the World Beyond. My blood boils and my skin clambers. I am in a high society that I denounce every day of my existence. Seeing all the people congesting about as though no people are living in anguish fills me with unimaginable rage.
I shift my gaze to my left and a blonde man approaches me. His perkiness irritates me even before he starts to speak, his smile like needles prodding me to get my furious attention. “Hello,” he greets in a bilous, sweet, and sickening voice. Outstretching his hand to me, I take it reluctantly. “My name is Racket, I am your tour guide to the World Beyond,” he discloses. His cerulean eyes tear apart my flesh letting him see my anatomy. I just nod in acknowledgment. He appears perplexed momentarily and asks plainly, “Do you not talk?”
I roll my eyes. “I’m Hope. How do I leave as soon as possible?” I demand flatly. He looks baffled. I sweep my grimy hair out of my face, hoping to leave some flecks on his pristine white clothing.
“Why would you want to leave? I assume that someone from the City Down Below would adore it here compared to your atrocious life from before,” he remarks almost sympathetically, shifting his position.
I groan obnoxiously, “You thought wrong. Why would I want to live large in a place where all of you assholes achieve absolutely nothing while all of us barely survive,” I tell him. This man is probably the most picturesque version of someone in the World Beyond and simply stays here because of his chiseled face and tan skin. There is not a brain cell within that obnoxious skull of his that can comprehend the absolute horrors that occur down where I am from. All he has is his face. “Why am I here anyway?” I ask him, irritated.
He disregards my statement from before. “You, Hope, took an aptitude test last December in which you placed in the top percentile of everyone within the three sectors in your age group,” he explains, “While normally we would transport you to only one sector above your original one, the council thought it was only accurate to bring you up here to expand your thoughts into reality.” His plastered smile is radiant and almost ethereal, though simultaneously masking a darker knowledge.
Now I am overflowing with confusion. “Listen, the last test I took was over three years ago when I was fifteen. You must have the wrong person,” I convey to him. I continue to scan my surroundings, trying to construct an exit plan. “And anyway, why would they bring up the one person out of my entire age group who wants to see the stupid institution crumble? I have a record and I know the ‘council’ or whatever are not idiots.”
Racket flips through a book, probably with notes about me and how much of an awful and disgraceful person I am. He places his finger on a specific note. “Hope Diaz, current age 18. Participated in an annual nightly evaluation through a brain scan. The subject was not aware of the test. Diaz scored 1590 out of 1600. History with smuggling, petty theft, tagging, and evading police— not a physical threat. Known anarchist, needs eyes watching them at all times.” Racket closes the book and looks back up at me with a grin, as though to ask how he did.
My jaw drops. How do they have so much information on me and why did they give it to this guy of all people? “What else does it say in that book about me?” I ask hesitantly.
His face turns kind of confused at my reaction. “Oh, no no, just basic information about your history, family, career, education, security details, cycles–”
“You were informed about my menstrual cycle?!” I shriek, feeling very violated. I cover myself with my jacket and back away from Racket. I know he meant my daily routine but maybe they will kick me out if I cause a scene.
“Nonono,” he recalls, holding his hands up to stop me. “Your daily routine, I mean. They watch through the security cameras to know what you’re doing at all times and—”
I stand normally. “You’re no fun,” I exacerbate. I walk past him and he jogs to me. He is back to his goofy grin.
He begins to show me around the city with the massive towers, cobbled-stretched streets, and people going about their day with not a care in the world. There was not a single officer in sight for miles. No machine guns open ready to fire, no tasers, nothing. It is almost ominous how they are nowhere to be seen, a utopia without fear. Maybe it was normal here? It feels completely unsettling, it is so normal to have a creeping officer looming around the corner ready to pounce on any rat that gets in his way.
Our last stop is a dormitory that is eleven stories high, something unfathomable to me. “This is where you will be residing. I live here as well, actually, right next door to you,” he explains to me as we enter the building together. The lobby of the building is pretty much a carbon copy of literally everywhere else we have visited; white floors, white walls, white rugs, white clothing, white people.
We make it to the corridor where our rooms are located. Before we go in I look at him, still trying to absorb every piece of information from his image, analyzing his body language, trying to understand everything. “You never answered me before,” I begin, “How do I leave? I want to go home.” I focus on him beseeching an answer.
He looks more perplexed than the first time I requested. “This is your home now, You can never go back,” he answers entering his room, not even looking back at me.
I enter my room, scanning the pristine room; immaculate. I look outside to see the crepuscular time of day seething from the horizon. The haimish copper sun illuminates the asylum walls filling me with sanity once again. The tints of yellow remind me of my home down below, my friends all joyous individuals facing the day with an exuberant yet bitter mentality, one that I could never quite conjure in the face of our situation. I long for the rays of the sun to guide me home with their eternal string sifting out.
I lay myself down in my enormous white bed as the sun continues to dip below the horizon, masking its rays. As the light recedes, an epiphany sprouts into my brain. This could be a useful opportunity to achieve equality throughout all the sectors. This entire time I loathed being here, however, I am here specifically for a fresh and innovative perspective. I do not think any council will enjoy my diabolical plan, but there is no way I am passing up the opportunity to gain what I want most in the world: retribution and equality.
The sun barely peeks above the horizon, my bag full of my klepto collection sinking my back. I need to find a way out of here but in the most outrageous and destructive way possible. I disembark down the stairs hearing footsteps close behind. “Hope, where are you going?” whisper-shouts an accustomed, bubbly voice.
“I have to go home, Racket,” I declare, trudging forward
I feel his grasp around my wrist. “Do not go,” he demands in a low, urgent voice, very uncharacteristic of him.
I seize my hand back into possession. “You do not understand. Some people depend on me down there. No amount of luxurious compensation will convince me to remain in this dull society,” I shout, shushing from him immediately following.
He looks almost petrified, but I cannot tell if he is for me or himself. Maybe he is concerned? Nevertheless, I have to concentrate on the task at hand. He lets out a short exhale. “Look, when I was younger my parents tried to go down there and they were brutally flogged to set an example. I never saw them again after that and I am just... just worried about what will happen to you,” he admits.
I never thought worry was something anyone from up here would understand, but Racket is showing a sort of sympathy I never expected. And to think that I have a similar situation to someone who lives up here; especially someone so different from me. I step back deconstructing the information that was just relayed, attempting to elucidate his words. “Listen,” I start, “help me get back down there, and in return, we can bring justice to the people who have hurt us the most.” I outstretch my hand to him.
He looks at me hesitantly before responding with a grasp in solidation. Racket hastily scans our surroundings again, I can see a spark ignite in his, a fiery vengeance. “Fine. I will help you as much as I can,” my new colleague concedes. A grin locates its way onto my face.
We make our way out of the building unseen. We duck into an alleyway watching as I peer out of our position and watch the citizens glide by, with no care in the world like a fish in a glass tank. The white clothing reflected the sunlight off them giving them a radiance that whispers how untouchable they are. I duck back to Racket.
“Okay,” Racket begins. “The labyrinth is our best bet to get out of here. I know a member of the cleaning survey team who can help guide us to the City Down Below. Before we go down,
I know making waves is what we desire, we will find my acquaintance who works at the black market selling outlawed items. We will stop by there before heading out and then make our move.”
He grabs my hand, a burning sensation tingling from my fingertips up my arm. He pulls us out and leads us around, confidence spewing from his body ever so naturally. His act was pristine, as though he had been doing this his whole life. We weave around the city, pretending he is showing me things I have never seen before— which he is— never acknowledging where we are actually off to.
Eventually, we make it to a dark, slum part of the World Beyond, something I had never guessed existed. Tables laid out scattered with materials, tents, and coverings align the foreboding area setting the ominous mood. Every person looks like they still belong here, though, wearing desaturated-colored clothing in comparison to the luminous white I am accustomed to. Racket led us to stand at the opposite end of the market to a younger gentleman leaning on the table tapping away at some device. His hair combs back pristinely and his eyes piercing red. He is very handsome but in a mysterious and eerie way. His smile curls around his face impishly.
“Racket!” he exclaims. “Just the guy I wanted to see!” His voice was shrill and rough. He opens his arms to greet us, enthusiastically prancing around his booth only to land back where he was before. “What can I do for you today, my fine friend?”
Racket finally let go of my hand and his front. “Angelo,” Racket says, “I heard you started selling some... material... that I could use for a plan.” Racket shuffled around in his pocket.
Angelo raises an eyebrow. “Oh?” he begins, “What are you looking for, my friend?”
Racket peaks around to make sure no one is eavesdropping. “Something sure to be... explosive.” He slaps down a few bills, currency so high I had never seen them before.
Angelo glances over at me, smirking like I am some sort of silly clown. “And who’s your friend?” Angelo asks, attempting to derail the conversation. He leans over towards me and reaches out to touch my hair as I dodge his interaction.
Racket blocks the view between me and Angelo. “That is not what we are here for,” he grumbles in response, almost like a guard dog. A small smirk found its way onto my face.
“Relax, my friend,” Angelo chuckles, “I was just thinking about a way to ease your payment with an... attractive girl.” I cringe at the sound of him calling me a girl; my skin crawling in every sense.
Racket disregards that last statement to get back on track. “Consider this a down payment, and a generation contribution to the annihilation of the establishment– something that will benefit all of us.” Racket glances at me for a moment, pulling me closer to him.
Angelo contributes to the rolling eyes. “Whatever, twerp,” he mumbles, his gracious mask slipping. “I do not get much business anyway.” He slaps the money into his vest pocket and then twirls around to the station behind him. He rifles through some items, then scribbles down some notes on paper. He hands a bag to Racket and the note to me. “They’re micro explosives–a lot of them. The paper has how they work. You are welcome,” Angelo tells us. “And my number on the paper as well.” He shoots me a wink sending chills down my spine.
Racket leads us away. “How do you know him?” I ask after we are a safe distance away.
He stops in his tracks. “We...went to school together?” he states, not very sure of his answer. He hands me the bag of explosives to put in my bag. I raise an eyebrow as I put them away. “Okay, we may have ‘run the streets’ when we were in school,” Racket discloses, swiftly continuing to lead, taking no further questions.
We say goodbye to the black market and head in a new direction, a brighter less illegal one. Down the streets, I am so familiar with now, grinning faces, ignorant to the destruction that is to proceed.
I take in the view of Racket as he leads us through the streets. I can see more of him and who he is with our excursion. He hurts more than I realize and he has been through some unimaginable things, I conclude. His blonde hair trails behind him shimmering in the sunlight, like a golden string guiding me around the labyrinth, like that sun peering from the clouds. In a million years, I never would have thought that my path was fated to cross with someone like him.
After what seems like crossing the city forever, we come upon a skyscraper that looks like any other. We halt in front of the building, Racket still holding onto my wrist. “Okay,” he commences, ”so the plan is I am going to ‘give you a tour’ of this building until we see my friend. I’ll tell her what is going on and she’ll lead us down the passageways.”
I nod, Racket immediately trying to drag me away but I hold my position for a moment. He glances back at me. “Racket, before we go any further,” I lead, “I want to say sorry, for dragging you into this disaster. I can tell you do not do this at all, or any more at the very least, so you are very out of your comfort zone. Also, thank you for doing this for me. It really means so much that you are willing to help me despite the fact we just met each other. Not a lot of people would do much for a stranger.” I try to let the sincerity shine through my tone with eyes of gratitude.
Racket flashes me his smile; a real smile. “You’re welcome,” he says back to me, “but, you know, at this point I would not consider us alien to one another,” he finalizes. Then we are off.
We step into the building and are immediately greeted by a disarray of people bustling through the main corridor. Most appear panicked holding stacks of paper and large binders. The tile on the floor reflects the haste with the ceiling illuminating their anxiety. Their pure white fills me with a sort of dread.
I feel Racket drag me through the crowd and explain many things despite the noise clouding my ears. We push past the mods up a staircase and through hallways and doors until we make it into a specific office labeled “Head of Sanitation.”
“And this,” Racket gestures as he closes the door behind him, “is Margret.”
A lady, who looks a bit older than us with a frizzy, curly, black mop on her head, looks up at us, peering out her crimson frames. She is hiding behind a wooden desk scattered with papers and portraits of her family.
“Racket,” she proclaims, “I thought I sent you that mail you were fired forever ago!” She gets up from her chair and approaches Racket to swaddle him in a bear hug, chuckling through it all.
They let go and Racket motions towards me. “Margret, this is Hope. They are from the City Down Below. Hope, Margret is the head of sanitation throughout the different sectors; she’s from the Upper Ring but comes here for work.”
Margret takes her seat back at the desk. “Why are you here, Racket?”
Racket exasperates. “We need to get Hope back home.” He glances at me for a moment.
Margret lights out a long sigh. “No,” she says bluntly. “I am not risking my stable career so some person you barely know can ‘go home.’ This place is so much better than any of the lower sectors anyway, why would you want to go back down to the grungy area.”
“They–”
I cut Racket off. “I have a family to take care of. Just like you provide for your family, I need to provide for mine,” I justify. “It’s not like I belong here anyway. All the people are beyond sensational. I am just a piece of sentient dust floating in the air hoping I land on the ground.”
Margret rolls her eyes, I watch them fall out of her head. She shuffles through her desk and pulls out a large keyring with copious amounts of keys swinging back and forth. “You know what, fine. But it is perilous if we do not remain quiet; and do not draw attention to ourselves. We will cautiously do this. I will leave first and meet you at the entrance to the underground.” She swings the door open and exits.
Racket and I embrace each other. I feel my heart pounding in my chest, jubilation flowing in my veins. We let go and face one another. “I get to go home!” I celebrate.
I can detect Racket’s smile slowly weakening. This entire time he has helped me get so far at the task at hand; getting the devices to explode the fragile system, evolving a plan with me, and taking me to the end. We are so different yet so similar. I wish we could stay together. “Racket,” I begin, calming myself down. “You know, we always have room for more in our circle.”
His somber grin makes my stomach churn. He tucks a piece of hair behind my ear, making my skin burn, his hand resting on my shoulder when he is done. “Someone has to continue the rebellion,” he concludes, “destroying a part of the structure will not crumble the entirety of society, but will for sure start the defiance. I will do my part upstairs.”
I smile back at him, authentic and elated. I take his hand off my shoulder and into mine, intertwining, like our fates. “Come on, let’s get this party started.”
Racket weaves us around the building until we make it back to Margret who is fiddling with her keys while holding a device to her ear mumuring, immediately putting it away once she sees us. “All right, let’s get this over with,” she grumbles opening the door.
We descend into darkness, lights dimly flickering our path. The concrete walls emanate over us, the floors just as intimidating. As we walk about, Margret guiding our way, I very cautiously stick the micro-explosives to the walls within about equal distance to one another. I glance at Margret every time I stick one to ensure she does not catch me. Luckily, Racket keeps her distracted as I nonchalantly deploy our plan. We hear water drip all around us and a heinous stench so strong it could burn off your eyebrows. Creaking and sputtering followed by other ghastly sounds waft through the air setting the ambience of our excursion. Margret and Racket are discussing something as I fall behind, taking in the atmosphere we proceed forward in the labyrinth.
We walk for what seems forever, the monotonicity getting to my head. Eventually, we make it to an iron gate that overlooks a set of stairs, leading downwards to what seems the City Down Below. I grin from ear to ear, shaking Racket slightly with excitement. Margret is behind us unlocking the intricate gate and disabling any alarms. Eventually, the gate rises creating a creaking and crackling noise. As soon as the gate has fully ascended I run down the stairs.
I stop about midway to take in the view of the city; my home. The disheveled appearance with smok scattered across the plain is homey and inviting. I can already feel my throat burning from the smog and pollution. The sky looks as though it is on fire, covering the city in a thick layer like always. I am home.
I turn around to Racket, his golden hair that guided me all this way and his somber but sweet smile making me feel safe.
The fire plunges from the skyscrapers creating craters and slaughtering in numbers. Ash flakes through the air like snow gently floating down from the sky, kissing down on graves. The smoke asserts itself in the air making me cough and gag for clean air once again. The cataclysmic scene before me of buildings crumbling down and fire scorching the earth is almost poetic in its own way. The ashes of my city trickled down, the blood pooling in the streets only to cascade down a storm drain and be washed away with no remembrance of its owner. Heads roll and people shriek in horror. My mind is bewildered at how this entire catastrophe was caused.
The last thing I remember before torment was inflicted on my place of origin was being pushed off the upper staircase on the way down to the City Down Below. I felt a foot on my back; screams followed.
I remember seeing Racket reach out to me as I fell, Margret smirking behind him. He attempted to grab my hand to hoist me up but it worked to no avail. He yelled my name in a bloodcurdling way only he could show for someone like me. With all the time I had spent in the World Beyond, Racket was the only person who was always by my side. Racket had a darkness in him that brewed stronger, he resented every single thing about himself, yet pushed himself to keep going, holding back every thought of destruction that entered his mind. When he met me something must have cracked within him to be on the side of vigilance.
I peer back up at the fiery destruction that consumed my home. The heat brushed across my face, sinking in the severity of the situation. I knew today was going to be my last day on earth, it was inevitable at this point. I just hope that Racket is okay and he continues on my legacy of retribution.
I imagine all my friends in our little warehouse playing tag as kids; running around chasing each other and giggling until we get tired and fall to our backs. All of them smile at me and thank me for my sacrifice of going to work every day to help provide. I imagine all of this is a horrible nightmare— I am going to wake up and everyone is going to be looking down at me with their grins piercing my skin, Racket right beside telling them all the things we did in the World Beyond and the part of the labyrinth we disintegrated.
But none of it is real.
I try to get up off the pavement but the most excruciating and appalling bolt of pain shoots my lower body. I finally take a look at the lower half and an enormous crumbling slab of concrete lay down on my legs inhibiting me from standing up.
I guess, in the end, I got what I wanted— the annihilation of the different sectors, but just not in the way I imagined it to happen. As I watch my world cave in and the inevitable destruction of everything I’ve ever known and loved, I beg for mercy as my eyes gently close and I feel my consciousness fading. Hot tears trickle down my cheeks, and my lungs burn.
It’s unfair. It's all unfair

“Keep it chilled.” That’s all he says to the comebacks from the woman in front of him. Juwon wasn’t amused by this topic and he didn’t want to entertain it much longer. He needed a drink or two in his system before even trying. Drowning the whiskey, he pushed the glass back to the woman when he gets her attention again. “Can I have a top up. Keep them coming please, I don’t like my glass empty until I turn it upside down, if you don’t mind.” Sarcastic politeness, that’s the best he could offer the woman right now. He takes the handkerchief from his pocket and uses it to wipe the blood off his hand. Frowning constantly, it obviously hurt. “Who knows, maybe an attitude like this is what makes me successful. So don’t go comparing the jobs, the attitude. I’m not telling you what to do, I am only telling you to do your job. Do you have a problem with that?”
She had rushed off to the other end of the bar once he had his drink, making a few more drinks for other customers. If there was any sort of perk to the bartender, it's that she was fast and seemingly accurate. The drinks all looked ready for a photoshoot, or at least as close as possible, and were in front of the customers within a minute or two. Minie ran this portion of the bar, and it showed in her confidence. Making her way back to him, she grabbed the still-cold bottle and refilled his glass, sliding it carefully back to him. "Got it, Mr. Bigshot. By the way, I still suggest laying off telling me how to do my job. You're paying me, and I've been here much longer than you." Now she was getting more childish, sticking out her tongue as she sealed the bottle and placed it into the cooler for now.

Candy Everybody Wants
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin blared from the neon juke-box by at the back of the Red Bull Bar-n-Grill. The happy-hour crowd had thinned out leaving the bar nearly deserted. Robert Till tapped his meaty fingers against his bottle of Shiner Bock, the dull black and silver band on his ring finger making a dull clink with each tap. He took a deep breath, looked back at the juke box then raised the bottle to his lips.
“…So she steps into the apartment, right….”
He glanced across the black lacquered table at the stocky, bald black man slouched into the faux leather booth seat. Their eyes met. He shifted nervously in his seat then swallowed another gulp of his beer.
“…Anyway,” the man continued. “I hear the door close…I turn around an’ she damn near right behind me.”
“You’re losing your edge, Muzi….”
Till bristled at the sound of the wiry Ukrainian man’s voice.
“…letting a woman sneak up on you.” Emil rattled the ice cubes in what was left of his Stoli and cranberry juice.
“Fuck you,” Muzi grunted. He glanced at Till again then sat up. “Anyway, she starts askin’ me all these questions…am I married…do I live alone….” He paused to throw a glance over his shoulder at the booth behind them. “…when’s the last time I had sex….”
“Bullshit.”
“I swear for Allah, Emil,” he said.
The chimes above the door rang. Till looked up to see a thin blond woman dressed in a green plaid mini-skirt and a tight red crop top step into the bar. She glanced around the room then slowly made her way over to the bar and slid onto one of the leather stools.
“You think maybe she was going to rob that flop you call an apartment…,” Emil chuckled as he set his glass down.
Muzi turned back to him. “Shit…if my chop hand’t been in the bedroom…up under the mattress, she woulda’ caught a hot one.”
Till checked his watch. He rocked the half-empty bottle back and forth between his fingers, let out an exhausted sigh then abruptly pushed away from the table and stood.
“Not getting cold feet are you?” Emil said and looked up at him.
Till looked back at him then at the grip of the nine-millimeter Rugar protruding from the lining of his kale green jacket. “Jus’ gettin’ a refill,” he said and grabbed the bottle.
Emil stroked the stubble on his chin and stared back at him a moment then pushed his glass across the table “One for me too,” he said. “More Stoli…less cranberry.”
“And some cigarettes,” Muzi added.
Till smirked. “I don’t think they got Newports.”
“Whatever man,” he grumbled then slumped back into his seat. “Just get me some cigarettes.” He followed Till with his eyes as he turned and headed for the bar.
“Just one drink,” the blond woman said, glaring at the bartender. She turned to look back at the stocky, middle-aged man making his way toward the bar then ran her fingers through her hair.
Maurice glanced at Till and nodded then turned his attention back to the woman. “Trent find out I let you….” he said.
“I got money, Reece.”
“It ain’t about that…you know you’re not supposed to be workin’ in here….” He backed away from her. “What can I get you?”
“Another Shiner,” Till said. He gave the woman at the end of the bar a glance. “And can I get a pack of cigarettes…whatever you got.”
Maurice pulled a bottle from the cooler and set it in front of him on a black cocktail napkin along with a pack of American Spirits. “That’ll be twelve-seventy-nine.”
Till stared at the bottle a moment watching the frost thaw on the side of the glass. He wrapped his hand around the bottle then wiped the cold condensation across his face. He set the bottle down and looked back at the woman. “What’re ya drinkin’?”
“She ain’t,” Maurice cut in.
She glared at the bartender. “A rum Collins.”
“A rum Collins for the lady…,” Till said. “Please.” He ran his fingers through his thinning brown hair then gave her a half-hearted smile.
She winked at the bartender then turned her attention back to the stocky gray-haired man. She watched him roll the pack of cigarettes between his fingers. “Spare one of those?” she said and nodded to the pack.
Till looked over at her and sighed. He set the pack on the bar and slid it toward her. “Help yourself.”
She stood, gave the bartender another glance as she smoothed the lines of her skirt then crept around the end of the bar. She settled onto the worn leather stool beside Till. “Thank you,” she said, fumbling with the pack of cigarettes. “I’m Tiffany.”
“That your real name?”
She stared back at him. “Today it is.”
Till smirked. “Sorry…didn’t mean nothin’….”
“Here ya’ go,” Maurice said and set her drink in front of her.
Till set the bottle down slowly and pulled his wallet out of his back pocket. He fished through it then laid a pair of twenties on the bar. “One more…,” he said and finished off his beer. “Keep the change.”
The bartender set another bottle in front of him. He folded the pair of twenties into his palm, threw another glance at Tiffany then grudgingly turned away heading for the group of customers at the far end of the bar.
Tiffany ran her finger along the rim of her glass and watched Till rock the bottle back and forth. A crooked smile turned the corner of her mouth. “You ok?”
“I…,” he started. He shook his head then swallowed another gulp of his beer. “I’m…fine.”
She pulled the straw from her drink and took a sip. A frown flashed across her face. “You want some company?”
Till raised the bottle and stared at it a moment. “I’m good,” he said then turned the bottle up. He closed his eyes as a splash of ice cold beer hit the back of his throat.
She looked past him at the bartender staring at her and sipped her drink. “What’s your name?”
“Does it matter?” he said and slowly set the bottle aside.
“Just trying to make conversation,” Tiffany said. She set her drink down and leaned toward him. “You seem like a nice guy.” She laid her hand on his leg and gently squeezed his thigh. “You just need to relax.”
Till glanced at her and a chuckle bubbled over his lips.
Tiffany looked back at Maurice watching her. He shook his head then turned his attention to the TV above the register. “Come on,” she whispered and leaned closer, brushing against his shoulder. “Won't cost you much.”
“Yo…,” Muzi shouted.
Till jumped at the sound of his voice.
Tiffany slowly moved back to her stool. She picked up her drink then glanced at the stocky bald man walking toward them. “Friend of yours?”
Muzi stepped between them. He stared at the blond woman a moment then grabbed the pack of cigarettes and turned to face Till. “Bus’s here.” He laid his hand on Till’s shoulder and shook him. “Time to go.”
Till stood, inhaled deeply then stared at Tiffany. “I seem like a nice guy…huh.” He reluctantly pushed away from the bar then turned and followed turned and followed Muzi and Emil through the door.

Eco-Friendly Bed & Breakfast Options in Saint John: Sustainable Comfort by the Bay
Tumblr media
As travelers grow more conscious of their environmental impact, eco-friendly accommodations have become a top priority. The quaint city of Saint John, New Brunswick, known for its rich history and breathtaking views of the Bay of Fundy, offers a variety of sustainable bed and breakfast (B&B) options that not only reduce environmental footprints but also enhance the visitor experience. From energy-efficient operations to locally sourced food, these B&Bs are setting a new standard for green hospitality.
The Rise of Eco-Friendly Travel in Saint John
Eco-tourism is no longer just a niche market; it has become a vital consideration for travelers worldwide. A 2022 report by Booking.com found that over 70% of global travelers are more likely to book eco-friendly accommodations. In Saint John, known for its stunning natural landscapes and vibrant cultural scene, this movement is gaining momentum. Visitors are drawn not only to the city’s historic charm but also to the sustainable practices employed by its local businesses, particularly its bed and breakfasts.
One standout example is Mahogany Manor B&B, a picturesque bed and breakfast in Saint John located in the heart of Uptown Saint John. Known for its historic beauty, Mahogany Manor B&B also embraces modern eco-friendly practices, making it an excellent choice for travelers looking to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing comfort or style.
Mahogany Manor B&B: A Green Getaway in Uptown Saint John
Mahogany Manor B&B exemplifies the ideal balance between historic charm and modern sustainability. This century-old property, situated in a prime location, welcomes guests with a unique blend of traditional architecture and contemporary eco-conscious values.
Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation
One of the core aspects of eco-friendly accommodation is energy efficiency. Mahogany Manor B&B makes significant efforts to reduce energy consumption. They utilize energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and heating systems throughout the property. Many of the rooms are designed to maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. Additionally, they encourage guests to minimize water usage by offering towel and linen reuse programs, which reduce the number of daily washes and conserve water and energy.
Saint John’s naturally cooler climate makes efficient heating systems vital. Mahogany Manor B&B has invested in modern heating controls that optimize energy use, ensuring the property stays warm without unnecessary energy waste.
Organic and Locally Sourced Breakfast
An essential part of the bed and breakfast experience is, of course, breakfast. At Mahogany Manor B&B, sustainability extends to the dining table. They prioritize using organic, locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. By supporting local farms and vendors, the B&B not only ensures fresh and flavorful meals but also reduces the carbon emissions associated with food transportation.
Breakfasts at Mahogany Manor B&B often include free-range eggs, artisanal bread, and fresh produce that reflect the seasons. Guests are treated to a farm-to-table experience that allows them to savor the flavors of New Brunswick while supporting the local economy.
Waste Reduction and Recycling Programs
Mahogany Manor B&B also emphasizes waste reduction, an essential component of any eco-friendly business. The B&B implements a comprehensive recycling program, encouraging both staff and guests to dispose of paper, plastic, and glass responsibly. Composting organic waste further reduces landfill contributions and helps enrich local gardens. They also avoid single-use plastics by providing refillable soap and shampoo dispensers, reusable water bottles, and glassware in guest rooms instead of disposable items.
By creating a culture of sustainability, Mahogany Manor B&B helps guests feel more connected to the environment during their stay. This ethos is woven into every aspect of their operations, from the guest experience to their behind-the-scenes practices.
Other Eco-Friendly Bed & Breakfasts in Saint John
While Mahogany Manor B&B is a prime example, other B&Bs in Saint John are also embracing eco-friendly initiatives.
A Tidal Touch at Shadow Lawn Inn
Located just a short drive from Saint John in the nearby town of Rothesay, Shadow Lawn Inn offers a more secluded, nature-focused escape while maintaining its eco-friendly credentials. The inn is committed to sustainability through water conservation, energy-efficient lighting, and waste reduction. Guests can relax knowing that their stay minimizes its environmental impact. Like Mahogany Manor B&B, Shadow Lawn Inn sources much of its food locally, ensuring fresh, sustainable meals.
Seaside Serenity at Homeport Historic B&B
Overlooking the Bay of Fundy, Homeport Historic B&B is another excellent eco-friendly option in Saint John. This B&B, located near the city’s major attractions, focuses on reducing waste and conserving resources. Energy-efficient appliances, low-flow water systems, and eco-friendly cleaning products are just a few of the sustainable practices used here. Homeport also encourages guests to explore the natural surroundings by foot or bicycle, reducing the need for vehicle use and promoting a more intimate experience with the environment.
How to Identify an Eco-Friendly Bed & Breakfast
When searching for eco-friendly accommodations, there are key elements that travelers should look for to ensure their stay is as sustainable as possible. Some of the most important factors include:
Energy Efficiency: Look for properties that utilize energy-efficient appliances, lighting, and heating/cooling systems. Ask if they rely on renewable energy sources like solar panels.
Water Conservation: A responsible B&B will promote water-saving measures such as low-flow showers, toilets, and faucet aerators, as well as towel and linen reuse programs.
Waste Reduction: Properties that minimize waste by offering recycling, composting, and limiting single-use plastics show their commitment to reducing landfill contributions.
Locally Sourced Food: Sustainable accommodations will prioritize organic, locally sourced ingredients, reducing the carbon footprint associated with food production and transportation.
Sustainable Building Materials: If a B&B has undergone renovations, find out if they used eco-friendly, non-toxic materials in construction and maintenance.
Certifications: Eco-certifications like LEED or Green Key are good indicators of a B&B's commitment to sustainability. Many smaller properties may not have formal certifications but can demonstrate eco-friendly practices through their policies and operations.
Why Choosing an Eco-Friendly B&B Matters
Opting for an eco-friendly B&B doesn’t just benefit the environment; it enhances the travel experience. Sustainable accommodations often provide a more intimate connection with the local culture and landscape, offering guests a deeper appreciation of their surroundings. In Saint John, where natural beauty is a defining characteristic of the region, choosing green accommodations means supporting businesses that actively work to protect these precious resources.
For eco-conscious travelers, staying in a sustainable B&B like Mahogany Manor B&B or one of the many other environmentally friendly properties in Saint John offers peace of mind. Guests can enjoy their stay knowing they are making choices that support the environment, local economy, and a more sustainable future for tourism.
Conclusion
As the demand for eco-friendly travel grows, bed and breakfasts in Saint John are rising to the occasion. By incorporating energy-efficient practices, supporting local food producers, and reducing waste, these properties offer sustainable comfort without compromising on quality. Whether you're staying at Mahogany Manor B&B, Shadow Lawn Inn, or Homeport Historic B&B, you can rest assured that your stay will contribute to a healthier planet.
In a city as naturally beautiful as Saint John, choosing eco-friendly accommodations is a step toward preserving this gem on the Bay of Fundy for generations to come. If you're seeking the cheapest B&B in Saint John that aligns with your eco-conscious values, look for options that prioritize sustainability while offering affordable rates—proving that green travel doesn’t have to come with a high price tag.
By choosing a bed and breakfast in New Brunswick like Mahogany Manor B&B or others mentioned, guests are not just booking a room—they are contributing to a more sustainable future for Bed and Breakfast Canada experiences.

Revive Your Cooler: DIY Fixes for Off-Season Issues
Tumblr media
As the seasons change, your cooler may encounter issues that affect its performance. From decreased efficiency to strange noises, these off-season problems can disrupt your comfort. However, with a bit of DIY know-how and some maintenance tips, you can revive your cooler and ensure it’s ready to keep you cool when you need it most.
The monsoon may have ended, but that doesn’t mean your trusty cooler gets to hibernate until next summer. In India’s unpredictable weather, it’s never too early to prep your cooler for unexpected picnics, road trips, or even power outages. But before you crack it open, remember – off-season storage can lead to unwanted surprises like leaks, odors, and mold. Fear not! With a few simple DIY fixes, you can revive your cooler and be ready for any adventure.
Did you know?
In India, 54% of households own at least one cooler, highlighting its importance for both daily use and outdoor activities.
Ram Services and Sales is here to guide you through DIY fixes and provide expert solutions for all your cooling appliance needs.
Cooler Revival Tips: Off-Season Maintenance Made Easy!
Clean the Air Filter:
A clogged air filter can impede airflow and diminish cooling efficiency. Follow these steps to clean your air filter effectively:
Remove the air filter from the cooler.
Gently brush or vacuum away any dust and debris.
Regularly cleaning the air filter ensures optimal airflow and enhances the overall performance of your cooler.
Check for Leaks
Inspecting your cooler for leaks is essential for preventing damage and maintaining efficiency. Here’s how to check for and address leaks:
Use a flashlight to thoroughly examine both the interior and exterior of the cooler for signs of leaks, such as cracks or rust spots.
Seal any leaks with silicone caulk or epoxy to prevent further damage and ensure efficient cooling.
Clean the Water Tank
Regular cleaning of the water tank is vital for preventing mold and bacteria growth and ensuring clean, fresh air circulation. Follow these steps to clean your water tank:
Drain the water tank completely.
Clean the tank with a mild detergent to remove sediment and buildup.
Rinse the tank thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry completely before refilling.
Inspect the Pump
A properly functioning pump is essential for efficient cooling. Here’s how to inspect and maintain your cooler’s pump:
Test the pump to ensure it’s functioning correctly by listening for any unusual noises or vibrations.
Clean the pump and intake area to remove any debris or obstructions that may affect its performance.
Adjust the Float Valve
The float valve controls the water level in the cooler tank, which is crucial for optimal cooling. Follow these steps to adjust the float valve:
Ensure the water level is maintained at around 1-2 inches below the top of the tank for efficient cooling.
Adjust the float valve as needed to maintain the proper water level.
Replace Worn Parts
Inspect the components of your cooler for signs of wear or damage, such as worn belts or corroded pads. Replace any worn parts to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
Here’s your guide to reviving your cooler:
Beat the Heat with DIY Air Cooler Solutions
The Classic Bucket Cooler
One of the simplest and most effective DIY air cooler solutions is the classic bucket cooler. Here’s what you’ll need:
A large bucket
A small fan
Ice or frozen water bottles
PVC pipes or flexible tubing
Mesh or cloth
Duct tape
Instructions:
Cut holes in the bucket to accommodate the PVC pipes or tubing. These will serve as the air vents.
Place the small fan on top of the bucket, facing downwards.
Fill the bucket with ice or frozen water bottles.
Attach the PVC pipes or tubing to the holes in the bucket.
Cover the top of the bucket with mesh or cloth to prevent debris from entering.
Turn on the fan, and enjoy the cool breeze as it passes over the ice and into your space.
The Evaporative Cooler
Another effective DIY air cooler solution is the evaporative cooler, which works by harnessing the cooling power of evaporation. Here’s what you’ll need:
A large container or cooler
A small fan
Water-absorbent pads or towels
Ice (optional)
Duct tape
Instructions:
Place the water-absorbent pads or towels at the bottom of the container or cooler.
Add water to the container until the pads or towels are saturated.
Place the small fan on top of the container, facing downwards.
If desired, add ice to the water for additional cooling.
Turn on the fan, and watch as the cool air is circulated throughout your space.
The Solar-Powered Cooler
For those looking for a more eco-friendly option, a solar-powered cooler is an excellent choice. Here’s what you’ll need:
A solar panel
A small fan
A container or cooler
Ice or frozen water bottles
Instructions:
Attach the solar panel to a sunny area outside your home.
Connect the solar panel to the small fan using wires and a switch.
Place the fan inside the container or cooler.
Fill the container with ice or frozen water bottles.
Turn on the fan, and let the sun do the work of powering your DIY air cooler.

Top 10 Eco-Friendly Products for Your Spring and Summer Picnics
As we embrace the warmer seasons of spring and summer, picnics become a favorite pastime for many. However, it's essential to ensure that our outdoor gatherings are not only enjoyable but also environmentally friendly. In this blog post, we'll explore the top 10 eco-friendly products that will enhance your picnic experience while minimizing your impact on the planet.
Reusable Picnic Basket:
Instead of opting for disposable bags or containers, invest in a reusable picnic basket made from sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled plastic. These durable baskets not only reduce waste but also add a touch of elegance to your outdoor dining experience.
Compostable Plates and Cutlery:
Say goodbye to single-use plastic plates and cutlery and choose compostable alternatives instead. Compostable plates and cutlery, typically made from materials like bamboo or sugarcane fiber, break down naturally after use, minimizing environmental impact.
Stainless Steel Straws:
Enjoy your refreshing beverages without harming the environment by using stainless steel straws. These reusable straws are durable, easy to clean, and eliminate the need for disposable plastic straws that often end up polluting oceans and harming marine life.
Eco-Friendly Picnic Blanket:
Opt for a picnic blanket made from eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton or recycled polyester. These blankets are not only comfortable to sit on but also biodegradable and sustainable, making them an excellent choice for eco-conscious picnickers.
Powered Lanterns:
Illuminate your evening picnics with solar-powered lanterns instead of traditional battery-powered ones. Solar-powered lanterns harness the sun's energy during the day and emit a warm glow at night, reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact.
Sustainable Food Containers:
Pack your favorite picnic snacks and meals in reusable food containers made from sustainable materials like stainless steel or glass. These containers are durable, leak-proof, and eliminate the need for disposable plastic bags or wrap.
Organic Cotton Napkins:
Add a touch of eco-friendliness to your picnic spread with organic cotton napkins. These soft and absorbent napkins are free from harmful chemicals and pesticides, making them a safer and more sustainable choice for outdoor dining.
Bamboo Picnic Utensils:
Upgrade your picnic utensils with bamboo alternatives that are lightweight, durable, and biodegradable. Bamboo utensils are a sustainable option for eco-conscious picnickers and add a rustic charm to your outdoor dining experience.
Collapsible Water Bottles:
Stay hydrated during your picnics with collapsible water bottles made from silicone or recycled materials. These space-saving bottles are easy to carry and refill, reducing the need for single-use plastic water bottles that contribute to plastic pollution.
Eco-Friendly Cooler Bag:
Keep your picnic essentials cool and fresh in an eco-friendly cooler bag made from sustainable materials like recycled polyester or natural fibers. These cooler bags are insulated, lightweight, and minimize environmental impact compared to traditional plastic coolers.
Conclusion:
By incorporating these eco-friendly products into your spring and summer picnics, you can enjoy outdoor dining while minimizing your environmental footprint. From reusable picnic baskets to compostable plates and cutlery, each product choice contributes to a more sustainable and enjoyable picnic experience. So pack your eco-friendly essentials and head outdoors to savor the beauty of nature without harming the planet.

Fires & Night Walking
Today for the most part I struggled to build a fire until my dad & mom both helped build it. Normally, I don't have an issue building one but today was testing me I guess. Then I did some reading and scanned some handouts that are helpful in my Google Drive folders. Technology is magnificent, let me tell you. It's amazing all the crazy shit you can do right from a little phone or tablet in your hands and how much you can file into it.
Anyway, I went on another night's adventure. I went on a 2.64-mile walk this time in front of the house instead of over the back from it...the front of the house way has some more elevated hills and requires a little more energy than the way that is over the back from my house. So, it's a little more difficult of a walk but less ground-covered. Tonight it was a lot cooler out and misty from the rain that had been happening on and off all day. I did get to stop by a spring of water on Stony Top and refill my water bottle. That hill is the hardest hill to climb probably within like 2-3 miles of my house. Overall it was a nice walk and I feel pretty amazing right now for accomplishing even walking a little over 5 miles in the last two days. It's like playing a video game and I just unlocked a new skill or achievement. Or, I'm in Girl Scouts and earned a new badge!
