It began innocently enough.

We awoke to find the dinosaurs frozen atop the dining room table, where appeared to have torn through a bag of candy corn.

No great loss there. Are there a functioning set of tastebuds on this planet who would willingly subject themselves to these waxen, tricolored “treats”?

Even the dinosaurs didn’t seem to have an especially high opinion of their loot. Steggy—always the hapless accomplice, perpetually nibbling at the edges of his companions’ misdeeds—was caught in media res pulling an orange crayon from its box. Don’t worry, Steggy—I’m not sure we could tell the difference either.

It was a tame first night, all things considered.

We had made preparations the night before: locked the messiest foods in the pantry, stowed sharp objects, and hidden the kids’ Halloween candy. We had left the candy corn unguarded, but that says more about the forgettableness of the candy than our readiness for the dinosaurs’ worst.

Today, at least, our precautions were proven unnecessary. Only Rex, the dinosaurs’ de facto leader and puckish purple prince, gave us pause. He had stuck to pieces of the triangular candies into his mouth like fangs. Surely this was only an exercise in silly faces, not an ominous warning of things to come.

We shared a nervous laugh and shrugged it off.

Perhaps this November wouldn’t be so bad.

Since Toy Story (and maybe since the very first toys!) children and their parents have wondered what it would be like if toys came to life. Refe and Susan Tuma take this wonder several steps further in WHAT THE DINOSAURS DID LAST NIGHT.

Every November, writer and social media master Refe Tuma and his wife, Susan, work into the night to bring their four children scenes from the secret lives of their toys -- specifically the nighttime antics of their plastic dinosaurs. The dinosaurs wreck bathrooms, destroy vases, rock out, encounter terrifying hot irons, even do the dishes with hilarious, magical results. Each scene is photographed in meticulous detail, letting viewers joyfully suspend disbelief and think to themselves -- just LOOK what the dinosaurs did last night!

Sunlight filtered into the room through sheer white curtains. A wooden desk stood along the far wall, bills and torn envelopes fanned out across it. The woman’s bed was tightly wrapped, a single pillow resting against the headboard, Wuthering Heights bookmarked on the stand.

So,

I got an email the other day from my Twitter-buddy and former writing student Refe Tuma. He let me know that a story we worked together on called “are u still there?” was recently published in Necessary Fiction.

Here's a quick taste:

I rubbed my eyes with clumsy numb fingers. The figure was still there when I peeked. It lumbered along the tree line, wraithlike in the falling snow. I thought, at first, that someone might have come to rescue us. A state trooper, maybe. But this was no state trooper. It stood taller than a man, with yellowed fur and long arms swinging at its sides. It could have been a polar bear on its hind legs, or an albino gorilla. Or, I was losing my mind.

I had been staring out the backseat window with Yuki’s text scrolling like a news ticker through my head. I had read it and reread it, parsing every word and running every possible scenario.

Something happening downtown. No one knows anything bc of snow. CALL ME.

And as if one piece of good news wasn’t enough, Refe just landed a book deal with Little, Brown for a photo project he did with his wife called “What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night”.

I didn't hear about it at the time, but apparently Refe and his wife sparked a bit of a "web craze" with this photo project, and you can read more about that HERE.
