Hickey knife details + other similar knives! B/c a lot of people only know about his.
So, like, I think us The Terror enjoyers all know about the Hickey knife:
Tumblr media
This isn't the only piece of cutlery marked by Cornelius Hickey, but it's the only one with his full name on it. His initials are at the back, as well!
Tumblr media
His neatness is distinctive- I'm not sure if he was literate, but given how he previously worked as a carpenter on the HMS Belvidera (Which many FE members including John Irving, Alexander Macdonald, and the Erebus' Caulker's mate, Fracis Dunn, also previously served on,) he's certainly got experience with woodwork and it shows.
Here are pictures of the other ivory/bone handled knives which have initials carved onto them.
Tumblr media
Magnus Manson, though this is a bit debatable.
Tumblr media
Most likely Richard "Dick" Wall, a cook. Another knife, "WR" (William Reed or William Rhodes) didn't have a good photo of it unfortunately. Here it is at the bottom, slightly to the left- you can kind of make it out! It seems like Mr WR is also a neat carver.
Tumblr media
Perhaps they traveled together and wanted to mark their own cutlery instead of using it communally? These knives were purchased from different groups of Inuit in different areas, but they might've traded hands many times.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Desi Arnaz, Benedict of Nursia, Moe Berg, Ed Bournemann, Dale Bozzio, Larry Carlton, Karen Carpenter, John Cowsill, Daniel Craig, John Cullum, Eddie Lockjaw” Davis, Maxwell Street, Jimmy Davis, Becky G, Rory Gallagher, John Gardner, Mikhail Gorbachev, Laird Hamilton, Sam Houston, Bryce Dallas Howard, John Irving, Jennifer Jones, Léon Jongen, Jon Bon Jovi, Orrin Keepnews, the 1933 film KING KONG, Papa Lightfoot, BarBara Luna, Madonna’s 1989 single “Like a Prayer,” Chris Martin, Gates McFadden, drummer-producer Tony Meehan (The Shadows), Method Man, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Lauraine Newman, Jay Osmond, Ethan Peck, Elvis Presley’s 1956 single “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” Luke Pritchard (The Kooks), Dottie Rambo, Red Saunders, Dennis Seaton (Musical Youth), Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony (1969), Bedřich Smetana, the 1995 musical SMOKY JOE’S CAFÉ, Ludovico Spontoni, the 1965 film SOUND OF MUSIC, composer-trumpeter Derek Watkins (James Bond films), Kurt Weill, Tom Wolfe, "Théo" Ysaÿe, and the creative provocateur, poet, and singer-songwriter Lou Reed. He was the principal songwriter for The Velvet Underground and his solo career spanned 5 decades.
Velvet Underground were not commercially successful but are now regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. Brian Eno said that everyone who heard the first VU album wanted to start a band. Reed had a deadpan voice that, for me, required forgiveness as singers go (though he did step up on occasion, particularly when he sung with The Blind Boys on THE RAVEN album). Eventually I connected with his noir fiction, transgressive “eyewitness reporting” lyrics and songcraft. He neither approved or disapproved of the subjects he sang about and, in the end, he just wanted to write catchy rock’n’roll. Over the years I’ve performed at least 6 Reed/VU songs—recording 2: “What Goes On” and “Sunday Morning,” on which I was joined by members of The Badlees (who did a splendid job in one afternoon). Reed himself commended our cover and promoted it on his website in the mid-90s. HB and RIP Lou.

Gray suit, white shirt, Mr. Anonymous, moving with precision as he browses the engineering section and selects the book Hanna now holds in his hand. Self-contained, focused, alert. Neil flips pages back and forth. The camera angle shows electronic microphotography of various kinds of steel.
Michael Mann & Meg Gardiner, Heat 2, 2022
Tumblr media
And how curious, what a distance he sought to travel from the grating sound of that c-h with its breadth of reference, its guttural history and culture, those heavy hallway smells and accents—from this to the unknown x, mark of mister anonymous.
Don DeLillo, Underworld: A Novel, 1997
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hanna was haunted by dreams, dead bodies at a long table looking at him. They didn’t say anything. Their look imposed obligations. (Mann & Gardiner)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever in search of the father who disappeared, Delmore bade everyone call him by his first name. His name was the first contradiction to engage his poetic sensibility; it was not the name of a "nice Jewish boy." [...] Lou Reed, his former student, may know the truth: the writer who wrote a timeless story framed as a movie was named after Frank Delmore, a dancer in silent films. Perfect, for Schwartz's consciousness danced through towering, flickering images. His name was emblematic of concerns he explored in his work: generational divides between immigrants and their American-born children, tensions between old-world values and American social aspirations, the old manners and a brash new culture that celebrated the breakdown of class divides and made a liberating religion of artistic endeavor. [...]
Words read for decades or centuries are never erased. Schwartz once said that his subject was "the wound of consciousness." He was a dazzling writer whose work captures the quicksilver mercury of time, the enormous weight of anguish, and the exaltation of finding meaning in what might have been lost sadness and desperate waste. Irving Howe said that Schwartz "found a language for his parents' grief," but the story transforms history, place, and character into primal truth.
Jayne Anne Phillips, "The Wound of Consciousness: An Introduction to 'In Dreams Begin Responsibilities,'" The Iowa Review, 2014

Manila, Philippines — VoicePlay & Rachel Potter live performances
Tumblr media
When VoicePlay and their buddy Rachel Potter released their "Moana medley" video in the summer of 2017, it went a bit viral and brought them a number of new fans, especially among young kids and their parents. A year later, one of those families invited the six singers to perform at their daughter's birthday party in Manila, with the added incentive of a public show for more of their Filipino fans. A trip to the other side of the world was an opportunity they weren't about to pass up. Even if it did require a full day of travel each way, everyone agreed that the experience was well worth it.

I didn't post this yesterday, sorry, I've only been doing WIP's recently as you can see to well, ease the pain of the lack of new news of the fandoms I am in and to burnout...
I had mentioned so many times in my Twitter account and Reddit that Splinter Cell: Conviction is my favorite game from the franchise (because it was the first game that brought me to the Splinter Cell Universe and made me love Sam a lot as a character). I know this game is not very liked by the Splinter Cell Community, it is even hated by it unfortunately, still it has a big spot in my heart and I always defend it with a shield and sword. I understand the game lacks the mechanics from the first Splinter Cell trilogy, is more like an action game/ stealth than a fully stealth game, still, that is the kind of action I love in videogames and well, when I first play it, at first sight I feel in love with the smooth movements, Sam body language, showing without using his classical gear that he is a hunter, he stalks its prey with precision and take them out quick than before, the way he climbs pipes, windows, attack from above enemies, more brutal than ever, is something that I admired in that game a lot, also the use of some parkour moves is something that I love a lot, reminds me of Batman Arkham Origins where you play with a more feral Bats, in Conviction you use a more feral Sam in his lower point, being hunted by the ones he through were his allies (3rd Echelon) and trying to find the "murderer" of his daughter Sarah (we know it was a made up plan by Irving Lambert *former director and friend of Fisher* to protect Sam from the mole inside 3rd Echelon that was Tom Reed, in that time the actual director of the agency).
Okay, I got carried away with emotion (see my love for this game a lot 🥹🫶💚🖤), so here I try to made a fanart of Sam being chased by a Splinter Cell agent. 🥺👉👈💚🖤

Rereading The Terror
Chapter Twenty-Two: Irving
Irving in this chapter is determined to find out where Silna goes when she leaves the ship as she's apparently able to do so without ever being seen or followed.
It's Crozier who's set him to the task - he's enraged by the fact that superstitious men have been leaving offerings of food and drink for her, calling it "un-Christian" and Silna herself "a heathen child". Such phrasing is gross enough in itself but Simmons then misses no opportunity to objectify Silna and mention the men trying to ogle her naked at any opportunity. Ugh.
Irving soon enters Silna's sleeping space and discovers within that a tunnel has been made out of ship through about half a dozen layers of hardwood and iron plating. I find the description of this revelation quite eerie and badass. "Lieutenant Irving's heart pounded furiously. If Terror were to be refloated miraculously tomorrow, she would sink. Could Lady Silence have done this to the ship? The thought terrified Irving more than any belief in her magical ability to appear and disappear at will. Could a young woman not yet twenty years old rip iron hull plates off a ship, dislodge heavy bow timbers that it had taken a shipyard to bend and nail into place, and know exactly where to do all this so sixty men who knew the ship better than their mothers' faces would not notice?"
Resolving to follow Silna, who he knows only left a few minutes before, Irving finds he can't fit through the tunnel and has to all but disrobe before he can squeeze through. Is there something symbolic there, do you reckon? Something about shedding bits of yourself as a means to move forward?
Irving is drawn to her location by the sound of some mysterious droning amelodic music playing in the distance and for some reason, as soon as he's outside the ship he becomes Irving the Fuck-Machine again: "The playing - which seemed to begin suddenly, increase its rhythm almost sexually and then stop abruptly, as if in physical climax..." "The hooting - seemingly just behind the next blue-glowing serac...had begun again, rising quickly to the loudest, fastest, deepest, and most frenzied noise Irving had heard so far. To his amazement, he found that he had an erection. Something about this instrument's deep, booming, reed-fluttering sound was so...primal...that it quite literally stirred his loins even as he shivered."
When he finally finds Silna, she's with the Tuunbaq and it appears that the mysterious music is emanating from her, as if she's the instrument itself and Tuunbaq is, for lack of a better phrase, playing her. Irving the Fuck-Machine again has some thoughts: "It was everything he could do to keep watching in a sort of sexually excited horror."
Once the show is over, Tuunbaq disappears, Silna gathers her things and prepares to return to the ship. She sees Irving as she does so but she's doesn't appear to give a shit about him. I am forced to read the phrase - "his now detumescing, burning erection..." - and with that, the chapter is over.

Music Safari NYC, continued . . .
[Covers the week of January 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 & 7.]
On January 1, Neal and I got the best seats in the house for The Anderson Brothers' presentation of a few of Irving Berlin's greatest hits.
Tumblr media
That's Molly Ryan, Will Anderson and Peter Anderson. (Or maybe it's Molly, Peter and Will.) It wasn't too late to sing "White Christmas."
On Tuesday (Jan 2), it was Mona's.
Tumblr media
The house band was Jared Engel, Jon Thomas, Josh Dunn (back of head), Aurora, and Tomas Majcherski (not shown above, see below).
Tumblr media
A bunch of great musicians showed up for the second set.
Tumblr media
That's Jared Engel in the foreground, with Matt Munisteri, Aidan Grant (bartender extraordinaire), David Ostwald (if you squint), unknown and unknown looking on.
Tumblr media
Rafael Halvorson-Castillo and Neal Siegal were in for the night.
Jan 3 was a night off . . .
On Thursday, January 4, Paula and I had great seats at Dizzy's for the Mathis Picard Sound Orchestra.
Tumblr media
It was big, big sound - definitely one of the major highlights of this music safari.
Tumblr media
Mathis was joyful. He's been working hard on this, and it showed.
Tumblr media
At his last Dizzy's gig, Mathis got married in the middle of the set, right on stage!
After Mathis, I booked it down to the Village Vanguard to hear the Chris Potter trio.
Tumblr media
He's a great player, but I must confess that the jazz he played was too abstract for my taste.
On Friday, January 5, Neal and I headed over to Barbés to catch VickiKristinaBarcelona.
Tumblr media
VKB is a project by Mamie Minch, Rachelle Garniez and Amanda Homi that reimagines the songs of Tom Waits. I don't know as much as I should about Tom Waits, given how important he seems to be to musicians I admire, but I'm guessing the emphasis is on, "reimagine."
Tumblr media
In a set full of surprises, the most surprising performance of the evening involved Rachelle ringing tuned ceramic hand bells - precisely and skillfully - to play a melody.
Tumblr media
On Saturday, January 6, it was raining and the 1-2-3 subway was not running due to a derailment, so I opted to stay closer to home.
Tumblr media
Neal and I caught yet another set of "Miss Maybell and the Jazz Age Artistes," at the Motto Hotel (by Hilton) on 24th street. That's Charlie Judkins on the keys, Brian Nalepka on bass and Miss Maybell strummin on the old banjo.
Tumblr media
Margaret Batiuchok was dancing up a storm to Miss Maybell. She got this young dancer going . . . very charming!
Tumblr media
On Sunday, January 7, the usual crowd was at The Ear - and the more regular players in the Ear-Regulars. Maestro Kellso on trumpet, the beard of reeds-player Scott Robinson, Matt Munisteri on guitar extrordinaire, and Pat O'Leary on bass (see below).

Note
https://www.tumblr.com/goongiveusnothing/734357187119529984/i-cant-even-imagine-how-hard-is-to-work-for-harry
I looked at Harry Lambert’s Zara collab and it clearly shows Harry S’ entire “style” was actually Harry Lambert’s. Same with Harris Reed. His entire personality and the books he “reads” are Molly Hawkins’ or his exes’. And I totally think his whole Fleetwood Mac obsession was just invented by Jeff because of the fact that Irving used to manage them and therefore it was mutually beneficial. It’s easy to work for Harry because he is just a void that you assign your own personality to😙
i 100% agree with you
harry on his own is a nothing, and eventually when the people around him move on to the new younger thing and harry tries to keep his career going with his own ego, people are really going to see who he really is underneath it all.
