Expect big crowds for the summer travel season—and big prices, too (AP) The unofficial start of the summer travel season is here. The number of people going through U.S. airports hit pandemic-era highs last weekend, and those records are almost certain to be broken over the Memorial Day holiday. AAA predicts that 37 million Americans will drive at least 50 miles (80 kilometers) from home this weekend, an increase of more than 2 million from Memorial Day last year. With more travel comes more expense. The average rate for a U.S. hotel room last week was $157 a night, up from $150 in the same week last year, according to hotel data provider STR. And the average daily rate for other short-term rentals such as Airbnb and Vrbo rose to $316 last month, up 1.4% from a year ago, according to AirDNA, which tracks the industry.
DeSantis Declares (1440) Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) made his long-anticipated jump into the 2024 presidential race yesterday, making the announcement in a livestreamed conversation with Twitter CEO Elon Musk. DeSantis has positioned his campaign as focused on conservative populism with an emphasis on effective governing and joins a field of seven other candidates seeking the Republican nomination.
ChatGPT maker OpenAI calls for AI regulation, warning of ‘existential risk’ (Washington Post) The leaders of OpenAI, the creator of viral chatbot ChatGPT, are calling for the regulation of “superintelligence” and artificial intelligence systems, suggesting an equivalent to the world’s nuclear watchdog would help reduce the “existential risk” posed by the technology. In a statement published on the company website this week, co-founders Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, as well as CEO Sam Altman, argued that an international regulator would eventually become necessary to “inspect systems, require audits, test for compliance with safety standards, (and) place restrictions on degrees of deployment and levels of security.” They made a comparison with nuclear energy as another example of a technology with the “possibility of existential risk,” raising the need for an authority similar in nature to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the world’s nuclear watchdog. The OpenAI team wrote, “In terms of both potential upsides and downsides, superintelligence will be more powerful than other technologies humanity has had to contend with in the past. We can have a dramatically more prosperous future; but we have to manage risk to get there.”
Fuel shortages slam Cuba’s countryside (AP) Rosa López, a 59-year-old housewife, lit a charcoal stove to boil sweet potatoes and prepare scrambled eggs for her grandchildren. The gas cylinders she normally uses to cook her meals have not been available for almost two months in Mariel, a port town west of Havana. Not far from there, on the highway to Pinar del Río and under a scorching sun, Ramón Victores spent one week waiting in line at a gas station, hoping to fuel up the 1952 red Chevrolet he uses for work, moving produce from one town to another. Cuba’s most recent fuel shortage has crippled an already fragile economy, but it is hitting rural villages particularly hard, with residents resorting to coal fires to cook their food, scrambling to find transport to take them to work and spending days—and nights—at the gas station waiting to fuel up. With food and medications already in short supply amid an economy that was severely hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic, the end of the country’s two-currency system and a tightening of U.S. sanctions, the lack of fuel and cooking gas is perceived by many Cubans in the island’s countryside as the last straw.
As Protesters Die, a Nation’s Security Forces Face Little Scrutiny (NYT) In the adobe house she built with her husband in a small village in Peru, Antonia Huillca pulled out a stack of documents that once represented a glimmer of hope. They were part of an investigation into the death of her husband, Quintino Cereceda, who left one morning in 2016 to join a protest against a new copper mine and never returned. Ms. Huillca can’t read, but she can identify a photo of her husband’s body, a bullet wound to his forehead; the question-and-answer format in which police officers describe firing live ammunition as protesters threw rocks; the logo of the mining company sending convoys of trucks over unpaved roads, sparking protests among villagers fed up with the dust. But today, the investigation has gone cold. “All these years and no justice,” Ms. Huillca, a 51-year-old Quechua farmer, said. “It’s as if we don’t exist.” For years, scores of similar cases in Peru have met a familiar fate: Investigations into the killing of unarmed civilians at protests where security forces were deployed, most of them in poor Indigenous and rural areas, are opened when they attract headlines, only to be closed quietly later, with officials often citing a lack of evidence. Now, the unusually high death toll during antigovernment demonstrations after the removal of the country’s president last year has put accusations of abuse by security officials in the global spotlight, raising questions about why so many previous killings remain unsolved.
Immigration to Britain reaches record high in 2022 (AP) The number of people moving to Britain reached a record high of more than 600,000 in 2022, government figures showed Thursday. The statistics office said the record level was due to a “series of unprecedented world events throughout 2022 and the lifting of restrictions following the coronavirus pandemic.” As well as people coming to Britain to work, the figure includes tens of thousands of international students and almost 200,000 people who have arrived under special programs for people fleeing war in Ukraine and China’s clampdown in Hong Kong. The high figure will renew debate about Britain’s departure from the European Union, which was motivated in part by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of people from across Europe in the years before the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Europe Faces a Food Shock (WSJ) Fresh out of an energy crisis, Europeans are facing a food-price explosion that is changing diets and forcing consumers across the region to tighten their belts—literally. This is happening even though inflation as a whole is falling thanks to lower energy prices. New data on Wednesday showed inflation in the U.K. fell sharply in April as energy prices cooled, following a similar pattern around Europe and in the U.S. But food prices were 19.3% higher than a year earlier. The continued surge in food prices has caught central bankers off guard and pressured governments to come to the rescue.
Prigozhin’s warning (Washington Post) Fresh off his claim of victory in capturing the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Russian mercenary boss Yevgeniy Prigozhin warned that Moscow’s brutal war could plunge Russia into turmoil similar to the 1917 revolution unless its detached, wealthy elite become more directly committed to the conflict. In a lengthy interview with Konstantin Dolgov, a political operative and pro-war blogger, Prigozhin, the founder and leader of the Wagner mercenary group, also asserted that the war had backfired spectacularly by failing to “demilitarize” Ukraine, one of President Vladimir Putin’s stated aims of the invasion. He also called for totalitarian policies. “We are in a situation where we can simply lose Russia,” Prigozhin said, using an expletive to hammer his point. “We must introduce martial law. We unfortunately … must announce new waves of mobilization; we must put everyone who is capable to work on increasing the production of ammunition,” he said. “Russia needs to live like North Korea for a few years, so to say, close the borders … and work hard.” Instead of demilitarization, he said, the invasion turned “Ukraine’s army into one of the most powerful in the world” and Ukrainians into “a nation known to the entire world.”
Turkish voters weigh final decision on next president (AP) Two opposing visions for Turkey’s future are on the ballot when voters return to the polls Sunday for a runoff presidential election that will decide between an increasingly authoritarian incumbent and a challenger who has pledged to restore democracy. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a populist and polarizing leader who has ruled Turkey for 20 years, is well positioned to win after falling just short of victory in the first round of balloting on May 14. He was the top finisher even as the country reels from sky-high inflation and the effects of a devastating earthquake in February. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of Turkey’s pro-secular main opposition party and a six-party alliance, has campaigned on a promise to undo Erdogan’s authoritarian tilt. The 74-year-old former bureaucrat has described the runoff as a referendum on the direction of the strategically located NATO country, which is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and has a key say over the alliance’s expansion. “This is an existential struggle. Turkey will either be dragged into darkness or light,” Kilicdaroglu said. “This is more than an election. It has turned into a referendum.”
Beijing can’t take a joke (Foreign Policy) A Chinese comedian’s mild joke about the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) last week led to a $1.9 million fine for his entertainment company. Li Haoshi, a stand-up comedian known as “House” onstage, joked that watching his dogs chase a squirrel reminded him of the PLA slogan “Fight to win!” Beijing authorities intervened after audio was shared on social media, fining the company that represents Li and confiscating the profits of weekend shows. Li is now under investigation for insulting the PLA and causing “bad social impact.” Around the same time, China suspended the Weibo and Bilibili accounts of a popular British Malaysian comedian after he made a joke about Chinese surveillance. One of the reasons that Chinese censorship has become so petty is that years of crackdowns under Xi quashed most dissident content years ago. The authorities must now go after the inconsequential to justify their own existence.
South Korea, US troops to hold massive live-fire drills near border with North Korea (AP) The South Korean and U.S. militaries were set to begin massive live-fire drills near the border with North Korea on Thursday, despite the North’s warning that it won’t tolerate what it calls such a hostile invasion rehearsal on its doorstep. Thursday’s drills, the first of the allies’ five rounds of firing exercises until mid-June, mark 70 years since the establishment of the military alliance between Seoul and Washington. North Korea has typically reacted to such major South Korean-U.S. exercises with missile and other weapons tests. Since the start of 2022, North Korea has test-launched more than 100 missiles but none since it fired a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile in mid-April. North Korea has argued its torrid pace of tests was meant to respond to the expanded military drills between the U.S. and South Korea, but observers say the North aims to advance its weapons development then wrest greater concessions from its rivals in eventual diplomacy.
What about those who can’t flee fighting in Sudan? (AP) Mahmoud almost never leaves his small apartment in east Khartoum. Electricity has been out for most of the past month, so he swelters in the summer heat. When he does venture out to find food, he leaves his mobile phone behind because of looters in the street. Otherwise, he hunkers down in fear, worried that an artillery shell could burst into his home. Since the conflict broke out last month, more than 1.3 million people have fled their homes to escape Sudan’s fighting, going elsewhere in the country or across the borders. But Mahmoud and millions of others remain trapped in Khartoum and its sister cities of Bahri and Omdurman, unable to leave the central battleground between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary. For them, every day is a struggle to find food, get water and charge their phones when electricity is cut off. All the while, they must avoid the fighters and criminals in the streets who rob and brutalize pedestrians, loot shops and storm into homes to steal whatever of value they can find.
Paralysis Breakthrough (1440) Swiss neuroscientists have successfully utilized a brain-spine interface to enable a paralyzed man to walk using his thoughts, according to a study released yesterday. The breakthrough development expands on recent innovations using spinal implants to generate movement in patients with immobilizing spinal injuries. Gert-Jan Oskam, a Dutch 40-year-old who was paralyzed 12 years ago, received two brain implants and one on his spine, creating a so-called “digital bridge” across the injured nerves. A portable computer decodes his brain’s electrical signals and relays them to a spinal pulse generator, resulting in the perception that his lower body movements are voluntary. Combined with regular therapy, the procedure allows Oskam to walk and climb stairs with a natural gait aided by a walker, at times without the digital bridge activated. The procedure further opens the possibility for victims of paralysis to regain control of their legs, with researchers hoping to reduce the size and invasiveness of the implants.

The Winter Slump
Hello!
Today, we're taking a peek inside the editorial side of things and talking about what I affectionately refer to as the "winter slump."
What is the Winter Slump?
The winter slump is the period between the week of American Thanksgiving and the first week of January when things get slow in the world of comics publishing. Something I talk about a lot on this blog is just how many people go into making every single comic. I work on a lot of licensed comics, so in addition to the writer, the artist/art team (pencillers, inkers, colorists, etc), letterers, designers, and any other editors I might be working with for creation of the comic, I'm also working with accounting folks and licensors who review the material and sales and marketing folks and printers and distributors and whoever else--all before it gets to the shop who gets it to you. A copy of Sonic the Hedgehog or Batman or whatever passes though a lot of hands.
But that also means that when we reach the extended holiday season in the U.S., there are more opportunities for one or more of the people in the chain to not be around. People take vacations, offices close, etc. Combined with the inherent nature of how long it takes for comics to be printed and distributed, it means any comics that are still in production this time of year are actually for release in the following year. So, editors like me find ourselves looking at a desk with no more books for this calendar year, various people we work with taking off, and hopefully, a tight hold on what's left to do as the clock on 2022 runs out. Work slows down a bit. What that opens up is more time for things that've been delayed and future planning, and that's why this time should matter to you, even if you aren't in editorial.
How does it help you?
Now is a good time to touch base with someone you've been wanting to work with editorially. They might not have anything at the exact moment, but they might be planning for late '23-2024 and know that in January or February they're going to be looking for folks and this is a chance to get back on their radar early. If you're hoping to hear back on a portfolio, now might be a good time to bump it back up their inbox. For example, I made my plans for the next work week at the end of this week and the majority of what I'm doing is getting back to people who have been very patiently waiting for a longer response and getting my future planning done. It's not a bad thing to touch base at a time when you expect editors and other hiring folks might have more flexibility than usual.
The caveat to all of that is editors are people too. They may be out of office for whatever reason around this time period. And if something's on fire, because they may be suffering from reduced support along the chain, they might have even less time than usual. There's the risk that you might still not get what you're hoping for, but the risk isn't any worse than at any other time you're emailing an editor, but the chances of a faster and more thorough response are higher.
What should you say?
So, editors might have more time because things are slower on their end. You wanna take advantage of that. What do you say to them? There are three main tactics.
1. The holiday check-in! Simple and easy, if you're just looking to touch base briefly, you can always drop them a line saying you hope they have a good holiday season. Maybe you can include a digital holiday card you drew, which usually goes over well.
2. The helping hand! If you genuinely have time in your schedule, reaching out to an editor and saying "hey, I'm still around and free through the end of the year if you need help on X" might be the solution to a problem they have. Since remaining deadlines tend to be tight this time of year, you might manage to offer your assistance at just the right time to get something done, which the editor will remember.
3. The portfolio follow-up! It doesn't necessarily have to be for your portfolio, but if you emailed an editor previously and haven't heard back yet, sending a follow-up specific to whatever you had originally contacted them about is not a bad idea. If it is related to a portfolio--including a writing portfolio--sending an "end-of-year" update can be really nice. Take it as a chance to brag about what you've done in 2022.
Whatever you do, just remember to be polite and understanding as it's a hope this editor's actually got a winter slump.
And just to get ahead of things: I'm only sending out two more updates this year! Not sure what next week's will be, but 12/17 I've got some goodbyes to say to something important to me. We'll be off the last two weeks of the year and back in January after that!
Things I've been enjoying this week: Getting the first gifts wrapped and under the tree. The Tick (TV show). Candy canes. Honkai Impact (Video game). Sonic Frontiers (Video game). Chainsaw Man (Anime & Manga). Spy x Family (Anime). My Hero Academia (Anime). Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang-Out (Anime). My Lovey-Dovey Wife is a Stone Cold Killer (Manga). A couple of WIPs I've got going. Our Pokemon card advent calendar. My friend Zac Boone who I got to see yesterday for a bit. The Simpsons (TV show). According to Spotify and adding in my non-Spotify listening, I listened to Lizzo for over 24 hours this year! That's pretty good! And the Rise of the Beasts trailer looked alright, as did the new Indiana Jones one!
New Releases this week (11/30/2022): Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Gigan (I didn't actually work on this, but the team that did is awesome and you should check it out)
New releases next week (12/7/2022): Sonic the Hedgehog #55 (Editor) Transformers: Best of Windblade (Editor--our penultimate TF book) Godzilla Monsters & Protectors: All Hail the King #3 (Editor! My first Godzilla book!)
Final Order Cutoff--Last chance for your store to guarantee release day copies for you (12/5/2022): Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island #4
Pic of the Week: I got new glasses and I think they look pretty sharp. I like the frames on my face.
Also, speaking of Rise of the Beasts, just a reminder that Beast Wars Vol. 3 is available in my shop now!

Breathe Easy with Professional Chimney Cleaning Services
1. Introduction
After enduring yet another scorching and arid summer season characterized by devastating California wildfires and prevalent ozone pollution, the prospect of sitting beside a warm and inviting fireplace during the upcoming holidays might seem distant. However, it's important to realize that the holiday season is just around the corner. Fear not, as your reliable local chimney cleaning services in Orinda are here to assist you.
2. The Importance of Fireplace Safety
Ensuring a safe environment is paramount when enjoying a wood fire. By adhering to proper burn practices, staying informed about Spare the Air days, and conducting regular chimney inspections and cleanings, we can relish the warmth and coziness of our fireplace without concerns.
3. When Can You Enjoy a Cozy Fire?
Nothing enhances the ambiance of a family gathering during the holidays more than a crackling fire. You can use your fireplace as long as no alert has been issued. Fortunately, Spare the Air days are relatively infrequent, with only five recorded no-burn days so far in 2021.
4. Understanding Spare the Air Days
The Bay Area is susceptible to two major air pollutants: ozone and fine particulate matter. When these pollutants reach high concentrations and pose health risks due to prolonged exposure, a Spare the Air alert is issued.
Ozone, a primary component of summer smog, forms as a result of the interaction between sunlight and pollutants emitted by refineries, cars, power plants, chemical plants, and other industrial facilities.
Fine particulate matter consists of small particles capable of entering the lungs. These particles originate from vehicle exhaust, chemical reactions to pollutants, and other sources. Furthermore, wildfires can propel particulate matter over long distances, exacerbating air pollution.
5. How Can Professional Chimney Services Help?
Regular chimney cleaning and inspection services play a crucial role in preserving the structural integrity of your chimney. Neglecting your chimney during the summer might lead to unexpected encounters with unwelcome guests, such as squirrels or other creatures seeking refuge.
6. Top 4 Reasons for Regular Chimney Inspections and Cleanings
By prioritizing chimney inspections and cleanings, you can benefit from the following:
a. Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning
A thorough inspection ensures that your chimney functions properly, preventing the accumulation of dangerous carbon monoxide gas within your home.
b. Prevents chimney collapse
Both summer and winter months can subject your chimney to harsh conditions that can compromise its structural integrity. The combination of a dry climate, intense heat, strong winds, and even minor earthquakes can cause damage to the cement and brickwork. Regular inspections can identify and address these issues before they worsen or become costly problems.
c. Reduces the likelihood of chimney fires
Dust residues and the build-up of creosote pose significant fire hazards. Regular cleanings effectively minimize these risks, ensuring the safety of your home and loved ones.
d. Eliminates smokey odors
A clean chimney reduces the chance of your house smelling like smoke, enhancing the overall indoor air quality.
7. Schedule a Professional Chimney Cleaning in Orinda
At The Irish Sweep, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional chimney cleaning services to the residents of Orinda and the wider Bay Area. Our professional team is dedicated to maintaining and maximizing the longevity of your wood-burning chimney and fireplace.

How To Avoid Electrical Problems In Winter Season
Did you know that residential fires increase dramatically during the winter months? According to the NFPA, electrical problems are the main cause of these fires, with heating problems being the second. - Electrician in Jamshedpur
Why are electrical problems so common and what can you do to avoid them? Most people ignore simple electrical safety precautions, possibly because they have never been told or understood how the system works. Just plug in something and magically it has power.
Let's take a closer look and understand what you can do to reduce these risks this winter.
Electrical problems: not enough power
You've probably never seen how much stress your system goes through during the winter months. Even so, your system can feel it. Some common symptoms that can cause you to get the most out of certain circuits or your entire system include:
Twinkling lights
Dim lights Tripping of circuit breakers
Here are some of the things that residential systems can overload and what you might want to do.
Additional lights
Most people use a lot of extra light during the winter months. After all, night falls much earlier and you usually don't go to bed right away. So, you turn to both table lamps and your ceiling lights to brighten up your interior.
In addition to normal lights, many people also add lights for the holidays. Unfortunately, most people don't understand the limits of a single circuit, what is already connected, and how much it can handle. Moreover, many people do not understand the danger of stacking different types of extensions on top of each other. One of the easy ways to avoid electrical problems in winter season.
Electric radiators and blankets
Space heaters and electric blankets consume a lot of electricity when in use. As such, it can overload some circuits, so you need to be careful with what is on the same circuit. Also pay attention to its height and activation time, as older systems may draw too much current
Old-fashioned electrical system
Speaking of older systems, if your electrical system is over 20 years old, you need to be careful. These systems use cables other than copper, which can become unstable over time. The more you try to draw the system, the more affects you will see.
Too many extensions
Using too many extensions is never a good idea. The more extension cords you put on, the more unstable it becomes. They increase the risk of a faulty signal as well as shocks and fires. The best practice is to use a single extension cord or a single power strip, but no more than one, and certainly not both.
Risk of electrical fire
Coming back to the risk of fire, there are additional things you can look for to easily fix and reduce your risk.
• Damaged lighting cables
Damaged cables are a major cause of electrical fires, especially during the holidays. Most people don't inspect their Christmas lights before putting them on the tree. If there are areas where the insulation is worn and the actual wire is exposed, there is a great risk. Make sure to check your light strands and discard any damaged ones. If you are using a real tree, make sure there is plenty of water in the medium so that it does not dry out too much.
• Extension cord is not rated correctly
Another way to avoid electrical problems in winter season. Different extension cords have different ratings, which correspond to the amount of current that can flow through them. If you try to pass more current through a cable than is designed to handle, the cable will get extremely hot. This can then melt the insulation and cause a short circuit that starts a fire. Make sure you are using the correct cable for your use. If you will be using it outdoors, make sure it is designed for outdoors so that it is isolated from the elements. All of these helps reduce your risk.
• Static Accumulation
When the weather gets cold, the humidity usually decreases. This lack of moisture makes everything drier and increases the appearance of electrostatic charges. This means that you have an increased risk of starting a fire only with electric shock.
To reduce this risk, consider using a humidifier. You can create individual humidifiers in each room or switch to an entire home appliance installed in the HVAC system. Either way, you want to monitor the humidity level. The ideal relative humidity is 35% to 50%. Less than that encourages more static electricity. More than that can lead to mold growth.
These are some authentic ways to avoid electrical problems in winter season. If then also you face electrical issues call Urbanwale to fix electric problem anytime & anywhere. You can book electrical services from website or you can download Urbanwale app from the Google Play store.

🎄Day 14 of the Christmas project🎄
kind of a second part of day 7 pairing : changmin x fem!reader
__
"Okay, I think everything is ready, do you have everything you need?" You zipped up your jacket before feeling your internal pockets, checking to see if you haven't forgotten anything. "I think I'm ready," you said, and Changmin smiled, turning off the hallway light before stepping into the hallway on your floor, letting you lock the front door.
The first two hours of your trip were slightly perilous, a thick layer of snow covered the road. Fortunately, it had been relatively warm the past few days, so the ground was still too hot for ice to form under the snow. Changmin was careful, keeping a reasonable distance with the surrounding cars. You felt your phone vibrate in your pocket, but you paid no attention. After a few seconds of constant ringing, Changmin looked at you briefly, hearing that your phone was not calming down.
"Aren't you picking up?" He asked, looking up at the road ahead, lightly pressing the brake pedal. "It's my mom," you explained before sighing, taking the phone out of your pocket anyway. You were right, the caller ID was, indeed, your mother. "Yes?" You picked up and didn't have time to add anything else as she began to speak quite firmly. "So have you made up your mind, are you coming home or not? I need to organise myself for the food," you let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of your nose before closing your eyes. "I told you just yesterday that I wasn't coming, I'm going to Changmin's family for Christmas, and we're already on our way," your mother sighed in annoyance on the other end, hearing her note something down. "So you'd rather risk your life on the road to go to a family that doesn't even know you rather than to come and see us. All right, have a good holiday without us then." "But mom-" your voice hung in the air as you heard your mother hung up on you, a wave of nervousness and regret sweeping through your body. You felt like crying and throwing your phone out the window, but out of respect for Changmin, you clenched your jaw as hard as you could, looking out the window to hide the tears of frustration you couldn't hold back.
Changmin didn't dare to say anything, he focused on the road instead. The scene that had unfolded before his eyes had startled him, sensing your frustration at your mother's inflexible behaviour. He wanted to comfort you, to tell you that everything was going to be okay, but he couldn't find the right words he needed to soothe you.
"Do... do you want to take a little break to get some fresh air?" He asked you with a careful and very soft voice, afraid of rushing you. You swallowed and wiped the tears away from your eyes, shaking your head from side to side. "No it's okay," your words came out of your mouth in a whisper, afraid your voice would break if you spoke louder. Changmin risked lifting his hand from the gearshift lever to rest it on your thigh, his thumb gently caressing the fabric of your pants. His gesture surprised you, but you said nothing, the regular pattern succeeding in reducing your tears. You took a deep breath and nodded as if to thank him for his gesture. "We can stop at the next gas station, I need some coffee," he suggested, and you nodded with a thin smile, not saying no to a hot drink.
Once you got coffee, you continued your little merry way to a highway exit, being Changmin's co-pilot by holding his cardboard mug to make him drink his coffee so that he can keep both hands on the steering wheel. The situation was a little odd but funny enough, being careful that he didn't burn himself when his lips touched the rim of the paper cup.
"Y/N, I have to confess something to you," your heart skipped a beat at his words, but you said nothing, waiting for him to carry on explaining before you panicked. He looked nervous and uneasy, gripping the steering wheel as he paced the streets to reach his own. "I lied to you," he confessed, and your eyes widened, searching him with your gaze to try to find the lie he was trying to hide. "I'm listening," your voice was dubious, and you cursed yourself for speaking too quickly, your heart taking over your reason. "I… I said that you could come to my parents for the holidays, but I forgot to tell you something…"
"Which is?" You were starting to get impatient, improbable scenarios creeping into your head. No, he didn't dare. "I... My parents wouldn’t stop pestering me because I always came home alone, and this time, I fucked up," you remained silent, waiting for him to spit it out, your body lazily following the movement of the car as Changmin turned right. "When I texted my mom to let her know you were coming, she left me no choice but to confirm we were dating. I had to tell her," you took a deep breath and nodded slowly, feeling the effects of his words in your body doing the act. You sighed deeply to stay calm, but you couldn't control your leg jumping with nervousness. "So, if I understand correctly, you forgot to tell me that you lied to your parents by telling them that I was your girlfriend? Just so I understand," you said, and it was Changmin's turn to nod, turning one last time before arriving on a street that was very familiar to you. "Yes, that what I said..." his voice trailed off, and your heart began to pound, mind racing. "And how do we do it, if they start asking about us and what-" "Follow my lead, and you should be fine," he simply said as he got out of the car to hug his parents, who were waiting for you on the doorstep. That's fantastic! He drops a bomb like that a few meters from his parents, and he thinks you're going to react well, and know what to do.
“Ji Changmin, tonight, you are a dead man," you whispered to yourself before opening the door, smiling as if nothing had happened. "Oh honey, we missed you so much," his mother said, gently rubbing his back, smiling as you watched them, quite withdrawn. Your gaze fell on his father, who gently advanced to shake your hand. "Y/N, nice to meet you," he was very polite and courteous, you now knew where your friend got his chivalry from. You were being cautious, not knowing what to do with your fake in-laws. "But honey, it's Y/N! Can't you remember? She's a friend of Changmin, she came over last spring. You hid from us that you were together, you secretive little boy,” the mother said, letting go of her son to come closer to you. You gave your friend a quick look of distress, but he only shrugged, looking deeply sorry.
"It's nice to have me over for the holiday season," you managed to say without sounding taken aback, and her mother gently rubbed your shoulder. "Of course Y/N, welcome to the family! Now come on kids, I've got lunch on the fire," his parents led the way, and you grabbed Changmin by the arm, pulling him down to whisper in his ear. "You are really out of your mind," you whispered to him, and he took a deep breath, grabbing your hand as his father turned to look at you. "I'm so sorry," he whispered to you through gritted teeth, his father completely oblivious to the entire situation rolling in front of his eyes.
The meal at Changmin's family was going relatively well, his parents pestering him with questions since he had never told them about your relationship. Certainly, considering this relationship didn't exist until a few hours ago! You put up with a few kisses of your roommate on your cheek, and his hand on yours when you were chatting with his parents, but nothing more. Changmin was surprisingly convincing, his parents genuinely happy for him that he found the one. His parents disappeared in the kitchen for a second, giving you time to breathe a bit.
"You don't know how much I hate you," you whispered, and he sighed. "I'm sorry, I know I fucked up, it won't happen again." "Good!" you stated, crossing your arms over your chest, eyes scanning the Christmas tree in the corner of the room to avoid the gaze of Changmin, who was trying to probe you. He was squirming in the chair, and you slightly flinched, feeling a warm hand run on your shoulder blades. Against your willingness, your cheeks started to heat, and you looked away, trying to hide them, but your friend was quick enough to see them, a smirk spreading over his face.
A teasing smile spread across Changmin's face, he rested his hand in the same spot despite you gently pushing him away. You gave up, realising that in the end, it didn't bother you too much. You even started to take a liking to your friend's closeness to you, his mom looking at you fondly when you told her about your imaginary first date. You put his son in the spotlight, the latter thanking you internally when you could very well have passed him off as an utter moron. He was relieved you weren't rubbing it in, knowing full well that you were swallowing your pride.
The sun went down, and evening came, feeling extremely satiated as you just finished the Yule Log.
"Okay, I'm going to bed, thank you again for everything," you praised Changmin's parents after helping clear the table, heading for the hall to go upstairs, your fake boyfriend at your heels. He took on the responsibility of carrying your suitcases upstairs and drop them off in his room. You bitterly chuckled when you stepped in his bedroom, noticing that you had to keep on pretending: sleep together. "How tiring it is to play this fucking game," you said as you lied down on the bed, the soft down fabric instantly calming you. It smelled clean and laundry, everything you needed to make you feel good. The smell reminded you of the times Changmin had lent you his sweatshirts when you had the heating failure in your apartment-share, smiling as you remembered the good times with your two roommates.
Changmin opened his suitcase and pulled out some pyjamas, throwing one of his t-shirts in your face with a teasing smirk. You said nothing but shook your head rolling your eyes. Is that how he thanked you when he owed you this big of a favour?
You looked at each other for a long time, determined to make the other look away. Unfortunately, since you were both extremely headstrong, neither wanted to lose, a teasing smile creeping across his face as he slowly moved closer to the bed, where you were sitting. Planting himself in front of you, he grabbed your shoulders and toppled you over, his knees on either side of your body.
"Can you explain to me what you're doing here?" You tried to sound confident and unbothered, but he could see your heart pounding in your neck, seeing that he affected you, despite you trying to make him believe that you were unaffected by his advances. "Will you shut up for a moment and let me do what I need to do?" He said, fake-annoyed, quickly grasping your wrists to lock them above your head. Gently bringing his face closer to yours, you could feel his warm breath against your face, making you blink quickly. "This is my way of thanking you for playing along," he said, and you arched an eyebrow, your face calm. "Aren't you rather doing what you dream of doing since we arrived, right?" He turned his head to the side and chuckled, still keeping your wrists above your head with a soft yet firm grip. When he looked back into your eyes, something had changed, and it made your stomach churn. "You're wrong. I've been dreaming of you and doing this for months," he whispered before coming to place his lips on yours with such ardour that you let out a sigh, Changmin letting go of your wrists to come and embrace your waist, letting you wrap your arms around his neck to deepen the kiss. It was one of the best Christmas gifts we have given you in recent years.

Magickal Herbs & Teas To Get You Through The Winter Season
By Tia Johnson
“But there are some things I know for certain: always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.”
-Practical Magic
The Winter season is a great time for going inward to do some self-reflection and honoring the cycles of death and rebirth. It’s also a time to celebrate the holidays. For some, it’s even a time to play in the snow and create snow angels. Simply put, it’s a very magickal time of the year when we understand what this season means.
But what about self-care via food? After all, we are eating more than ever during this season! From holiday-themed food to holiday-themed drinks, it seems never-ending!
What about consciously eating to stay warm and benefit from the magickal and practical properties? How could we benefit from that and what are these herbs and teas that are going to help us in this mission?
How To Benefit From This List
Below is a list of some herbs and teas that, when we consciously consume, transition from a seemingly mundane herb and drink to a magickal source of goodness to raise our vibration, help to keep us warm, and aid to boost our immune system. Consciously consume these herbs, spices, and teas by activating its magick through saying things like, “Rosemary, thank you for helping me with protection, love, healing, sleep, and mental powers.” as you are taking in its aroma and imagining it going through your body and your aura creating a vortex of protection, love, peaceful sleep, and better mental powers. Imagine what that would look like for you and what that would feel like for you.
I discuss the herb list in detail in my latest episode on The Spiritual & Empowerment Living With Tia podcast, Magickal Herbs To Get You Through The Winter Season.

29 for Kit Crossford and Ophilia-- HAHAHAH IM TRASH HERE'S ONE OF MY RAREPAIRS
@tomestobetold || smooch prompts || RAREPAIR HELL, RAREPAIR HELL, RAREPAIR H
Being fused with the Dark God Galdera left a great many changes in Kit.
Both Alfyn and Professor Albright took the time to verify that the changes would not progress much more or pose any risk to him. They were, however, permanent.
All his forwardmost teeth are sharpened now, like the fangs of a wolf. There are patches of his skin that have turned into sooty black scales that reflect little- if any- light, arranged in swirling patterns. A little on his neck and face, here and there on his legs...the largest patches are concentrated over his shoulders and shoulderblades, pectorals, hips, and forearms. His fingers end in sharp claws now. And all the skin that has changed to scale is very difficult to damage or bruise- even with tempered steel blades. Like dragonskin.
He never had any formal magic training growing up, so Kit had no real aptitude for combat magic. Now, though, as if in response to the fusion with Galdera, his ancestors' blood has awoken, leaving him with such an intense affinity for shadow magic that casting even powerful spells feels as natural as breathing. The tradeoff is that now he is much more susceptible to injury from light elemental magic. And while his natural healing process is much faster, healing magic has a much weaker effect on him than before.
Such changes have made finding work very difficult, of course. He can't hide them, and many people are put off by them. He looks half monster, after all.
Kit isn't sure if he's completely human anymore. And if he isn't, he doesn't know if he is lesser for it.
But grappling with these internal questions is made much easier by the kindness and understanding of the good people of Flamesgrace.
Sister Ophilia is the one to offer him a place to stay initially. But her confidence in vouching for him has quickly helped the rest of the Cathedral's clergy grow comfortable around and trusting of him. And through that, many of the townspeople have followed. There are still wary glances here and there, but after the few months he has spent here Kit is feeling relatively settled.
Kit is not an apothecary like his father was, nor has he ever had extensive training in a single trade. But through experimentation, doing odd jobs, and self learning he has developed quite a lot of skill as a craftsman. He loves art, of course- but he can also build, repair, restore almost any structure granted he has the time and materials- as well as the assistance, if it isn't a job he can handle alone.
As such, he's become the not-quite-official groundskeeper for the Flamesgrace Cathedral and its surrounding properties. He is paid with meals and lodging, as well as a modest- but still fair and adequate- paycheck, issued twice a month.
She says his tenacity and eagerness to help are to thank for Kit being able to settle and establish himself so securely here. But he maintains, even if only with himself, that none of that could have taken root if not for Ophilia's support.
She is an incredibly kind and gentle person, he's found, but her will and her backbone are stronger than steel, and she's extremely driven. There's much more fire in her than her soft demanor and looks would lead others to believe. And that is part of why he's found himself becoming so reliant on her. But also it just feels nice to have made a close friend.
He wasn't bullied or ostracized growing up by any means. But the inconsistency of his home situation did make it difficult to form any deep and lasting bonds.
For what it's worth, Ophilia seems happy to have his company as well. She has many good friends among the other clerics and gets along with others rather easily. But, as she tells him at one point, everybody needs a confidant, and not just anybody will do for that. And so she and Kit have taken to spending a fair amount of their free time together.
Usually they just get a meal, or have coffee or tea, or unwind from their busy days with quiet hobbies and enjoy a comfortable silence. Kit will sketch, Ophilia will read.
Today they are perched on the sill of a wide window on one of the upper floors of the Cathedral, watching the beginning snowfall.
It won't grow into a blizzard, at least Kit doesn't think so, but it will probably get a bit heavier before morning arrives. He's slowly growing more accustomed to the cold climate of the area, so he's not very worried.
It's a beautiful landscape, though. The winter solstice is only a few days away, which means the Festival of Lights has already kicked off its week long celebrations.
The Church of the Sacred Flame observes several holidays and festivals. The most widespread and well known are for the equinoxes and solstices. Seasonal celebrations for each period of the year. The Festival of Lights held during the winter solstice is just what it sounds like. It is a time to renew feelings of gratefulness for everything that brings light into one's life. Family, love, friends, food, merriment- all things that fulfill and comfort people are given focus. Most shops have reduced hours during that time and close completely on the solstice right in the middle of the festival period. That day is the quietest- it is when families, by blood or bond, hold their smaller and more personal celebrations. A day of quiet companionship with the people closest to one's heart. Though he can't clearly recall his mother's face now, Kit does remember her voice and her warm hands teaching him to dance or guiding his hands through meal preparation many years ago, before his family splintered.
Flamesgrace, of course, is aglow with lights of all kinds now. Glimmering in themselves and casting a colorful shimmer on the falling snow. Watching it from such a high vantage has him a bit awestruck.
"It really is a breathtaking view," Kit says softly.
"It is," Ophilia replies, and Kit glances at her- then pauses, because she isn't looking out the window at all.
Her gaze is fixed very firmly on him.
The look is sharp and intent and focused. He feels almost like she is tracing his every feature, trying to commit it all to memory. And underneath there is something very warm and fond and sentimental. It's so impossible to miss that Kit feels himself flush a little, and can't look away.
He makes an attempt to speak again, but closes his mouth when he can gather no words.
He quietly takes Ophilia's features in. A soft, somewhat round face, cheeks always a bit rosy. Her eyes are a warm brown, and her hair is straight and soft, platinum blonde.
Without meaning to, he pauses at her mouth. Smaller than his, but with fuller lips. And, h thinks, a much prettier smile. After all, he isn't blind- and he knows a work of art when he sees it. Ophilia is a masterpiece by any standard. To say he doesn't feel anything for her would be lying through his teeth.
"Are you all right?" He finally manages, still staring, a little dazed.
Ophilia moves in closer until she is standing right in front of him. Her eyes are still burning holes through him as her fingers touch his jaw, coax his face forward. And they both lean in, and Kit has time for a steadying inhale before Ophilia finishes closing the gap and kisses him.
It's a chaste kiss, but still warm and solid and full of so much affection Kit never realized Ophilia had for him until now. And he doesn't freeze or pull away or waver. He relaxes into it, returns it gladly. If Ophilia wants to give him this, he's not enough of a fool to reject it. He has many things still to rebuild within himself and many doubts and demons to contend with. But one conclusion he has been able to make is that regardless of what Galdera has changed in him, he still has a heart. One that hurts, one that loves, one that beats the same way as it always has. And as such, he has every right to be loved in turn.
There's no question in him that Ophilia could probably have anybody she wants. She's adored by almost everyone she meets, and it isn't unwarranted. But it's Kit she chooses to confide in at the end of the day, and it's Kit whose hand she holds for strength.
They part after a few seconds and are quiet for a few more. Kit's throat has run dry and he thinks he must be every bit as red as Ophilia is. But it's a sweet sort of bashfulness, one born of realizing their attraction to each other is reciprocated.
Eventually, he finds his voice again. "Could I convince you to be my escort around the festival grounds?" he says, managing a shy smile. A flustered little laugh comes out of Ophilia, like a tiny bell.
"I'd be delighted, mister Crossford." She replies.

Biden Team Prepares $3 Trillion in New Spending for the Economy (NYT) President Biden’s economic advisers are pulling together a sweeping $3 trillion package to boost the economy, reduce carbon emissions and narrow economic inequality, beginning with a giant infrastructure plan that may be financed in part through tax increases on corporations and the rich. The enormous scope of the proposal highlights the aggressive approach the Biden administration wants to take as it tries to harness the power of the federal government to make the economy more equitable, address climate change, and improve American manufacturing and high-technology industries in an escalating battle with China.
Hugs, at last: Nursing homes easing rules on visitors (AP) An 88-year-old woman in Ohio broke down in tears as her son hugged her for the first time in a year. Nursing home residents and staff in California sang “Over the Rainbow” as they resumed group activities and allowed visitors back in. A 5-year-old dove into the lap of her 94-year-old great-great-aunt for a long embrace in Rhode Island. Nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other kinds of elderly residences battered by COVID-19 are easing restrictions and opening their doors for the first time since the start of the pandemic, leading to joyous reunions around the country after a painful year of isolation, Zoom calls and greetings through windows. The vaccination drive, improved conditions inside nursing homes, and relaxed federal guidelines have paved the way for the reunions.
Miami’s South Beach confronts disastrous spring break (AP) Florida’s famed South Beach is desperately seeking a new image. With more than 1,000 arrests and nearly 100 gun seizures already during this year’s spring break season, officials are thinking it may finally be time to cleanse the hip neighborhood of its law-breaking, party-all-night vibe. The move comes after years of increasingly stringent measures—banning alcohol from beaches, canceling concerts and food festivals—have failed to stop the city from being overrun with out-of-control parties and anything-goes antics. This weekend alone, spring breakers and pandemic-weary tourists drawn by Florida’s loose virus-control rules gathered by the thousands along famed Ocean Drive, at times breaking into street fights, destroying restaurant property and causing several dangerous stampedes. The situation got so out of hand that Miami Beach Police brought in SWAT teams to disperse pepper bullets and called in law enforcement officers from at least four other agencies. Ultimately, the city decided to order an emergency 8 p.m. curfew that will likely extend well into April after the spring break season is over. Some tourists are angry about the curfew, which they say has put a damper on long-sought vacations for which they paid good money. Meanwhile, some officials say they should have enacted more stringent measures sooner—as was done in New Orleans prior to Mardi Gras last month—instead of reacting in the middle of the chaos.
England slaps 5,000 pound fine on most travel abroad (Reuters) Fines of 5,000 pounds ($6,900) will be introduced for people from England who try to travel abroad before the end of June in a tightening of the country’s border controls. Health minister Matt Hancock said the government’s original plan to review international travel in April and possibly permit it from May 17 still stood but the travel fines were included in legislation in case that would not be possible. In the UK, foreign holidays are currently banned. Europe’s airlines and travel sector are now bracing for a second lost summer. Having already racked up billions in debt to survive a year of travel restrictions, they are facing further strain and some may need fresh funds.
Tensions mount between Afghan government, powerful warlord (AP) Tensions are mounting between Afghanistan’s government and a powerful local warlord, with deadly clashes erupting in a rural province between his fighters and government troops. The government has launched an assault in central Maidan Wardak province, vowing to punish the warlord, Abdul Ghani Alipoor, after the defense minister accused his fighters of shooting down a military helicopter last week, killing nine personnel. Alipoor holds widespread loyalty among ethnic Hazaras, a mainly Shiite community who are a minority in Afghanistan but make up most of the population in Maidan Wardak. If Kabul considers warlords as agents of turmoil, their supporters see them as their only protection and support in the face of a notoriously corrupt government and violent insurgents. Many Hazaras, who face attacks by Sunni militants and discrimination by the government, see Alipoor as a hero, defending them against the Taliban and keeping local institutions running. “The government is incompetent, so people depend on Alipoor and support him,” said Mohammed Jan. “Alipoor serves his people. If our government would serve the people, everyone would support it and there wouldn’t be any need for an Alipoor.”
China Makes It A Crime To Question Military Casualties On The Internet (NPR) When China acknowledged this year that four of its soldiers had died fighting Indian forces on the two countries’ disputed mountain border eight months prior, the irreverent blogger Little Spicy Pen Ball had questions. “If the four [Chinese] soldiers died trying to rescue their fellow soldiers, then there must have been those who were not successfully rescued,” he wrote on Feb. 19 to his 2.5 million followers on Weibo, a Chinese social media site. “This means the fatalities could not have just been four.” The day after, Qiu Ziming, the 38-year-old former newspaper journalist behind the blog, was detained and criminally charged. If convicted, he faces a sentence of up to three years. “Little Spicy Pen Ball maliciously slandered and degraded the heroes defending our country and the border,” according to the annual work report published by the country’s chief prosecutor office this month. Qiu’s is the first case to be tried under a sweeping new criminal law that took effect March 1. The new law penalizes “infringing on the reputation and honor of revolutionary heroes.” At least six other people have been detained or charged with defaming “martyrs.” The government uses the terms “revolutionary heroes” and “martyrs” for anyone it memorializes for their sacrifice for the Communist Party. The detentions typify the stricter controls over online speech under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which have deterred nearly all open dissent in the country. The new law even seeks to criminalize speech made outside China. Such is the case of Wang Jingyu, 19, who lives in the United States and is now a wanted man in his hometown of Chongqing, China. The authorities accuse him of slandering dead Chinese soldiers after Weibo reported him for a comment questioning the number of border fight casualties. “Cyberspace is not outside the law,” the Chongqing public security bureau said in an online notice after it declared Wang would be “pursued online” for his comments.
West sanctions China over Xinjiang abuses, Beijing hits back at EU (Reuters) The United States, the European Union, Britain and Canada imposed sanctions on Chinese officials on Monday for human rights abuses in Xinjiang, the first such coordinated Western action against Beijing under new U.S. President Joe Biden. Beijing hit back immediately with punitive measures against the EU that appeared broader, including European lawmakers, diplomats, institutes and families, and banning their businesses from trading with China. Western governments are seeking to hold Beijing accountable for mass detentions of Muslim Uighurs in northwestern China, where the United States says China is committing genocide. China denies all accusations of abuse.
Australian floods (AFP) Devastating flooding is ongoing across Australia, where an area the size of Alaska with some 10 million people is at risk for excessive rainfall and storminess. The flooding comes amid colliding weather systems gripping the country. Up to 35 inches of rain fell in just four days, and some places are seeing their worst flooding in 60 years. Nearly three times the average March rainfall has fallen in a number of locales, which Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology described as “phenomenal,” with additional rain and flooding expected in the days ahead.
Israel TV satirist says grateful to politicians but needs a break (AFP) As Israel heads into its fourth election in two years, the presenter of the country’s favourite satirical TV show has a request, and he’s only half joking. “I would like us to finally have a stable government and make a boring programme,” says Eyal Kitsis, frontman of the Channel 12 show “Eretz Nehederet” (“A Wonderful Country”). As much as Israel’s political turmoil may be straining the patience of the electorate, it has been television gold because “reality is crazy”, Kitsis told AFP. “Elections and politics have really become entertainment in this country. Our challenge as a satirical programme is to add a layer to it, to take it to the next level.”
Israel vote deadlock: Netanyahu appears short of majority (AP) Uncertainty hovered over the outcome of Israel’s parliamentary election Wednesday, with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and sworn political rivals determined to depose him apparently lacking a clear path to a governing coalition. Deadlock in the 120-seat parliament was a real possibility a day after the election, which had been dominated by Netanyahu’s polarizing leadership. With about 87.5% of the vote counted by Wednesday morning, Netanyahu’s Likud party and its ultra-Orthodox and far-right allies fell short of a 61-seat majority.
Saudi Arabia offers cease-fire plan to Yemen rebels (AP) Saudi Arabia on Monday offered a cease-fire proposal to Yemen’s Houthi rebels that includes reopening their country’s main airport, the kingdom’s latest attempt to halt years of fighting in a war that has sparked the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The move comes after the rebels stepped up a campaign of drone and missile attacks on the kingdom’s oil sites, briefly shaking global energy prices amid the coronavirus pandemic. It also comes as Riyadh tries to rehabilitate its image with the U.S. under President Joe Biden. Saudi Arabia has drawn internationally criticism for airstrikes killing civilians and embargoes exacerbating hunger in a nation on the brink of famine. Whether the plan will take hold remains another question. A unilaterally declared Saudi cease-fire collapsed last year. Fighting rages around the crucial city of Marib and the Saudi-led coalition launched airstrikes as recently as Sunday targeting Yemen’s capital of Sanaa. A U.N. mission said another suspected airstrike hit a food-production company in the port city of Hodeida.
Rail and derailments (Vice) Freight rail is an essential vein of the transportation system in the U.S., moving 57 tons of goods per American each year. It’s also the safest way to move hazardous materials, but freight train derailments are more common than one might think: in 2019, there were 341 reported derailments on main line track, of which 24 were freight trains carrying 159 cars of hazardous materials. The labor unions in the rail industry have been calling this out as a symptom of a degrading safety culture, and warn that it’s only a matter of time before one of those derailments causes catastrophic damages.

Hey there! I’m your Secret Santa! I heard you like Shinobu and Kanao, so I hope you’ll enjoy this! I tried my best to follow the prompt you liked!! Please have a great holiday!
~~~~
Cold bites at her lungs, her throat, her face. Kanao pulls the shawl closer to her body and distantly wonders how Shinobu is coping with it. This is a cruel winter, one that will claim many a life before it’s over.
It’s perfect weather for demons.
They’ve just wrapped up a difficult job, one that involved a family grappling with cabin fever. Sometimes, it’s not the work of a blood demon art that people have to watch out for. Sometimes, it’s their own minds. Like always, even in this case, they assess the situation, treat the symptoms, and bury the dead. For missions like these, she is grateful for her numbness. In the back of her mind, she can still see the blood of a child, smeared on one wall. With steady hands, she wipes it clean once more.
Snow silently swirls through the air. It’s pretty on its own, she supposes, but the way it alights in her sister’s hair makes Shinobu look positively unearthly. Each step makes them both sink into the white blanketing the ground. Her lungs hurt. It’s a strange sort of ache. She looks down at her fingers and thinks, Will I get frostbite? I’ve never had it before. She hopes not. Gripping a sword without the necessary appendages would be hard.
“Kanao. We need to find shelter.”
Right away, Kanao jerks to attention and nods. Yes, shelter is ideal. Even though the family had offered to house them as a reward, taking people up on their offers isn’t how her sister operates. She knew then that they’d be going back into the storm, and she knows now that walking on for much longer won’t be a good idea.
“I’d go up into the trees, but it’s too slippery for that.” Shinobu continues, like she didn’t answer at all. “If we stick together, everything should be fine.”
Just in case, she shuffles closer to her sister. Perhaps she can offer a little bit of her warmth.
They keep walking. Kanao thinks she might freeze like this. They’ll find her when the snow melts, she’s sure, and make up stories about who she might have been. Her sister won’t freeze, of course, for she is a Hashira and full of brilliant fire. There’s a power in that, a special something that will keep her going until she sees her goals to the end. She’s not like that, not really, but she’s fine with following along in her wake.
At the very moment she feels like her legs might give out underneath her, a shack appears, released from winter’s vision-reducing embrace. Her sister silently appraises it. “This will do.” They stride towards their temporary lodgings, undeterred by the snowdrift blocking the door. It only takes a little effort to shove apart the mass of wet and chill.
Kanao hesitates in the entrance while Shinobu makes herself at home. There is little space and even smaller amounts of food. Is it right to waste what could help her sister survive another day? Her fingers feel too stiff to flip anything, much less a coin, so the weight of making a decision paralyzes her.
Dull, large eyes meet hers. “Come in already. Don’t let all the heat escape.”
Commands are easy. She always does what she’s told to the letter, and a minor blizzard can’t change that fundamental aspect of herself. Without any delay, she steps past the threshold and pulls the door shut.
“I wish I knew sometimes what went on in that head of yours…” There’s a clear invitation to approach in the way she holds herself, and Kanao does, albeit a little hesitantly. Shinobu sighs. “If your safety or health is on the line, I expect you to watch out for yourself. You are not expendable. I won’t risk losing my tsuguko. Please keep learning from me. We have some time together yet.”
Ice cold hands cup her face. There’s intent there. She can feel the desire to pass on the closest thing to tenderness her sister can make through her fingertips. Caught up in that caring feeling, she can’t help but nod.
Outside, the world looks dead. It’s quiet out there, deceptively so. In here, it’s quiet too, in much the same way. Kanao observes the way Shinobu’s jaw stays clenched and how her eyelashes remain clumped from the cold. The snow has melted already, leaving behind dampness in her locks. They don’t talk to each other, but there’s a lot to see if she looks.
And she looks.
That night, when it’s darker, they sup on mysterious scraps of meat and bread. Rations. She doesn’t think anything of it, except when it comes to how her sister sometimes grimaces as she chews. Picky. is her sole judgment, though it’s rich with what she assumes fondness must be.
“Would you like the rest of my share?” It’s offered up to her, crumbs and all.
“No.”
Shinobu’s shock is more subtle than most, but she knows it’s there. It rests in the sudden twitch of her smile. “Well, alright! I can see you’re adamant about that.” Her laugh stays the same, no matter how many times she makes it.
Kanao watches snow drift down through the window.
When they’re both finished, exhaustion starts to drag their eyelids down. Luckily, there are a few futons free for use. She tries not to consider where everyone might have gone.
“I hate this weather.” Her sister admits as they lay everything out. “I miss spring.” Unsure of what to say, she smooths out the wrinkles that stand out the most with her still cold hands.
“Don’t you miss it too?”
She shrugs. It only reminds her of Kanae. Maybe that’s what the girl beside her means.
“I see.” Shinobu says. Now, she doesn’t sound surprised at all.
Once they push the futons together and climb in, there’s not much else for her to do beyond staring into the dark. “You should sleep.” There comes that voice, along with a caressing hand for her scalp. She tries her best to relax into it, no matter how uncomfortable it feels.
Kanao exhales and asks a question. “Will we freeze?”
Her reward is a too icy kiss on her brow. “We won’t.” Her sister reassures. “It’ll be alright. We’ll just climb out through the window.” It’s said with such conviction that she can’t help but believe it.
By the time the snow melts, a season later, they have been home for ages.
Climate Crisis in the American West: What the Numbers Tells Us About a Catastrophic Year of Wildfires
A historic drought and record-breaking heatwaves combined to spark blazed that burned nearly 7.7m acres this year
— Gabrielle Canon in Los Angeles; Graphics by Rashida Kamal | Saturday, 25 December 2021
2021 proved another disastrous fire year for the American west.
Amid a historic drought and record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires that erupted across the US burned close to 7.7m acres. Some broke records that had only recently been set. And while the amount of land burned this year didn’t reach 2020 levels, a troubling new trend emerged: fires are getting harder to fight.
“With the conditions we saw this year and everything leading up to it – historic drought, these prolonged dry, heatwaves – everything together made it a very challenging year,” said Aitor Bidaburu, a wildfire program manager for the US Fire Administration. His biggest takeaway on the blazes “was just the intensity with which they burned”, he says.
The statistics tell the story of a fire season that now stretches far into the year, fires that have grown more ferocious, and climatic conditions that are causing the blazes to behave erratically and dangerously.
Here’s a look at the fire year in numbers.
A long and Intense Season
The season of high fire threat is stretching longer and longer.
Wildfires used to be largely confined to a four-month period but the threats are now felt through the year. By 21 June, close to 29,000 wildfires had already ignited across the US – roughly 4,000 more than average years according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
The threats didn’t subside after the summer and autumn. Blazes burned through Montana and Colorado into December this year and fire weather warnings prompted power safety shutoffs in southern California over the Thanksgiving holiday in late November.
Megablazes are Becoming the Norm
Megablazes – fires that blacken more than 100,000 acres – were once considered a career highlight for firefighters. But they’re increasingly becoming the norm. “We hear from the first responders that they have never seen fire behavior like this in their careers,” said Bidaburu. “[Megablazes] are becoming routine. During the summers we are seeing them on a weekly basis.”
The number of fires that burn each year is trending downward – but the average acreage burnt by the blazes is rising.
In California, roughly 2.6m acres of land went up in flames this year, eclipsing the 5-year-average of 1.4m.
Eight of the top 15 largest wildfires in the golden state occurred in the last two years
Flames are Reaching New Heights
Fires committed feats never seen before. “For the first 25 years of my career, fires moved in a certain way and in a certain fashion but now they are acting very uncharacteristically,” said Jon Heggie, CalFire battalion chief. “There’s no denying that fires are burning hotter and faster.”
The Dixie fire, which burned close to a million acres in California over three months, became the first fire to cross over the Sierra Nevada range. Soon after, the 221,775-acre Caldor fire became the second.
The Windy fire and the KNP Complex fire, which tore through California’s Sequoia & Kings Canyon national parks, resulted in the deaths of up to 3,637 mature sequoia trees – a species that thrived through fires for centuries.
Landscapes are Turning into Tinderboxes
Fire risk across the American west was exacerbated by historic conditions: a record-breaking drought and unprecedented heatwaves. Higher heat not only dries landscapes faster, making them prone to burn, it also reduces snow, reducing the water flow into rivers and reservoirs. “You are just racking up year after year of high temperatures and below-average precipitation” said Andrew Hoell, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologist who serves as co-lead on the agency’s drought taskforce. “It’s just a lousy situation.”
2021 delivered the hottest summers on record in California, Nevada, and Oregon. Washington and Arizona had their second hottest summer this year.
By the end of November – even after heavy rains doused the Pacific north-west and northern California – 80% of the west remained categorized in severe drought. Half of the region was still experiencing extreme drought.
Enormous Pressure on Resources
Combined, the fires put enormous stress on the US’ firefighting resources. Bidaburu says the increasing intensity and the proximity and danger to communities has driven up costs. “You get these intense fires and they require more resources, the urgency is higher, the public safety aspect is much higher,” he says.
The cost of battling these blazes in 2021 was more than $4.4bn, according to the NIFC – more than double the 10-year average for federal firefighting costs. That’s the most ever spent on a fire season by the federal government and these numbers don’t include state and local expenditures.
Federal agencies categorize “preparedness levels” on a scale of one to five to denote the amount of resources deployed to battle blazes across the country. This year, the country was cast in categories four and five for 14 consecutive weeks, the longest stretch ever documented at the two highest levels. At level four, more than half of all national firefighting resources are deployed. At level five, resources are nearly exhausted.
Shifting Strategies
The intensity of this year’s fire season has raised the stakes, forcing governments to adapt their suppression strategies. If high greenhouse gas emissions continue, climate models show that the risk of large wildfires could jump up to 6-times higher in the next three decades.
“We are seeing a dramatic increase and this environment we are in is here to stay,” said Heggie, the CalFire chief. States like California are ramping up mitigation efforts and prioritizing programs to educate the public on fire safety, but are constantly fighting to keep up with the changing conditions.
Officials are trying to plan five steps ahead of the fire, anticipating that the flames could spread 10 times faster than they once did, according to Heggie. Blazes once battled over two to three weeks are now burning the same amount of space in a single day.
Budgets are being boosted. Biden’s $1.2tn infrastructure bill includes $3.3bn for wildfire management, including pay increases and programs for firefighters bearing the brunt of the increasing intensity. In California, legislators granted close to $1bn in wildfire prevention for the 2021 fiscal year and at least $200m annually over the next 6 years. A $15m increase in funding was included in Noaa’s budget request for fiscal year 2022 to fund fire weather research and observations that will give communities access to key predictions.
In the social safety-net and climate bill still in Congress, Democrats have proposed spending $27bn on protecting the nation’s forests, which includes $14bn for fuel reduction projects.
Holiday Heart Attack
Every year, approximately 647,000 people die from heart disease.
It is known to many people that heart disease is the top cause of death for both women and men. By exercising daily, watching what we eat, and keeping our stress levels low, we try to combat it.
Yet multiple people are surprised to know that through December and January, we spoil the most and our stress levels crescendo at that time. The death toll increases by 33% at times of heart attack.
The logic for the "holiday heart attack" is not known, but doctors have many theories.
It is common for people that the holidays in cold weather causes a spike in heart attacks.
Even in warmer climates, However, holiday heart attacks are consistently higher across the country. In 12 years, one-third of extra coronary artery disease deaths happen. One study suggests January and December than in June through September in Los Angeles County.
A different theory says that the attached stress that comes with the holidays may be enough to send a week hearted person over the edge. But the rise of heart disease does not happen in a matter of weeks as the numbers may suggest. The increase in cardiac deaths during the holiday season could be because of a culmination of heart illness risk factors tied into a short amount of time.
After all, less motivation to work out, stress and overindulgence, are the three major components that make up the holiday season.
Make it a potluck! Ask your friends and family to chime in! Have everyone bring a meal so that the workload doesn't all fall on a single person. Want to take your health to the next level? Challenge yourself and your preferred ones to prepare dishes rich in colourful veggies, fruits, and whole grains! Watch your liquor intake. Over time, excessive liquor can raise your blood pressure. regular
Drinking can lead to an irregular heartbeat known as arterial fibrillation, which increases your uncertainty of heart attack.
Stay warm! Cold temperatures are difficult on the heart! They cause blood vessels to contract, which raises blood pressure. Lower temperatures also mean that blood clots more easily. Avoid exposure to frigid temperatures and layer up!
Catch some sleep. One of the easiest ways to strengthen your immune system is to get a sufficient amount of sleep! Infection and fever put extra pressure on your heart, so keep your immune system
functioning properly!
Get some fresh air. The crackling of a wood-burning fire might get you in the holiday mood, but the tiny particles released by burning wood are harmful to your heart health. Keep your distance from burning wood and stay inside during any air pollution alerts.
Get moving! Take a walk around your society to look at lights! Find a quick workout video on YouTube! Turn your exercise into quality family time and ask your preferred ones to join you! Exercising works wonders on your heart and reduces stress!
Say NO! Stay away from high-stress conditions. The first step is to pare down your "to do" list! You are not a superhero—no one expects you to be! Having too much on you can lead to exhaustion, anger, and emotional stress—all of which cause pressure on the heart!
Pay thought. Many people neglect their health through the holidays. Don't forget to take your meds and pay heed to how you're feeling. If you feel like something might be wrong, don't impute it on stress, worry about being an inconvenience, or brush it off. Many people confuse heart attacks with panic attacks. It's better to be safe than sorry! Don't put off discomfort or pain because you are travelling. Seek medical attention right away.
No matter what season it is, always aim for BALANCE in your lifestyle choices.
 Stay focused on your goals.
• Stay honest with your journey.
• Stay conscious of your body.
• The holidays are about spending time with the people that you love.
An ‘Awe Walk’ Might Do Wonders for Your Well-Being (NYT) Consciously watching for small wonders in the world around you during an otherwise ordinary walk could amplify the mental health benefits of the stroll, according to an interesting new psychological study of what the study’s authors call “awe walks.” In the study, people who took a fresh look at the objects, moments and vistas that surrounded them during brief, weekly walks felt more upbeat and hopeful in general than walkers who did not. The findings are subjective but indicate that awe walks could be a simple way to combat malaise and worry. They also underscore that how we think and feel during exercise can alter how the exercise alters us. There already is considerable evidence, of course, that exercise, including walking, can buoy our moods. Past studies have linked increased physical activity to greater happiness and reduced risks for anxiety, depression and other mental ills. Feeling a sense of awe also seems to up our overall feelings of gladness and improve health. A somewhat nebulous emotion, awe generally is defined as the sense that you are in the presence of something larger and more consequential than yourself and that this something is mysterious and ineffable.
Trump flown to military hospital (AP) Stricken by COVID-19, a feverish and fatigued President Donald Trump was flown to a military hospital Friday night where he was given remdesivir following treatment with an experimental drug at the White House. The White House said Trump’s expected stay of “a few days” at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was precautionary and that he would continue to work from the hospital’s presidential suite, which is equipped to allow him to keep up his official duties.
Americans Increasingly Believe Violence is Justified if the Other Side Wins (Politico) At the presidential debate this week, the Republican candidate voiced his concern about political violence—left-wing political violence. And the Democratic candidate likewise voiced concern about political violence—right-wing political violence. They were both right. Our research, which we’re reporting here for the first time, shows an upswing in the past few months in the number of Americans—both Democrats and Republicans—who said they think violence would be justified if their side loses the upcoming presidential election. This growing acceptance of the possibility of violence is a bipartisan movement. Our data shows that the willingness of Democrats and Republicans alike to justify violence as a way to achieve political goals has essentially been rising in lockstep. Here’s what we’ve found: Among Americans who identify as Democrat or Republican, 1 in 3 now believe that violence could be justified to advance their parties’ political goals—a substantial increase over the last three years. In September, 44 percent of Republicans and 41 percent of Democrats said there would be at least “a little” justification for violence if the other party’s nominee wins the election. Similarly, 36 percent of Republicans and 33 percent of Democrats said it is at least “a little” justified for their side “to use violence in advancing political goals”—up from 30 percent of both Republicans and Democrats in June.
Number of Americans who have no trust in mass media hits record high (Gallup) At a time when Americans are relying heavily on the media for information about the coronavirus pandemic, the presidential election and other momentous events, the public remains largely distrustful of the mass media. Four in 10 U.S. adults say they have “a great deal” (9%) or “a fair amount” (31%) of trust and confidence in the media to report the news “fully, accurately, and fairly,” while six in 10 have “not very much” trust (27%) or “none at all” (33%).Gallup first asked this question in 1972 and has continued to do so nearly every year since 1997. Trust ranged between 68% and 72% in the 1970s, and though it had declined by the late 1990s, it remained at the majority level until 2004, when it dipped to 44%. After hitting 50% in 2005, it has not risen above 47%.
California milestone: 4 million acres burned in wildfires (AP) California is poised to hit a fearsome milestone: 4 million acres burned this year by wildfires that have killed 30 people and incinerated hundreds of homes in what is already the worst fire season on record. Flames have scorched an area larger than Connecticut and fire crews at a blaze in the northern wine country were on high alert as forecasters warned of red flag conditions of extreme fire danger into Saturday morning. Winds up to 30 mph (48 kph) were forecast to push through the hills in Napa and Sonoma counties as the Glass Fire, exploded in size earlier in the week, continued to threaten more than 28,000 homes and other buildings. “It’s a time of nervousness,” said Paul Gullixon, a spokesman for Sonoma County.
Hope in the haze (Poynter) In mid-September, as fires spread across Oregon, photojournalist Beth Nakamura headed to an evacuation site in Springfield. The air was thick with smoke at Springfield High School thanks to the Holiday Farm Fire. She found tables set up with food and clothing as she walked around, getting a sense of the site. Outside, behind the bleachers and onto the field, she saw something else. Belle, Batman and Superman were playing recess games. “It was like a mirage,” Nakamura said. The story she wrote the next morning captured that. “Against the backdrop of this grim, bewildering landscape, Belle sits on a bench and, with cheer and calm, begins to read. ‘All of us in this castle were put under a strange spell some years ago by a powerful enchantress,’ she tells the child seated next to her. ‘I’ve seen you in the movies,’ the young girl says, transfixed.” Amid staggering catastrophe, people are everywhere helping people. At a Holiday Farm fire evacuation site, a few dressed up as characters to comfort & entertain children.
Hundreds of earthquakes continue to rattle Southern California, USGS says (Sacramento Bee) Swarms of earthquakes continue to rattle the Salton Sea area in Southern California, with more than a dozen sizable quakes since midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey reported Thursday. Most of the tremors are below 3.0 magnitude, but a few earthquakes registering over 4.5 magnitude have been recorded, the USGS reports. The agency had recorded at least 240 quakes by Wednesday night. The quake swarms “are located in an area of diffuse seismic activity between the San Andreas fault in the north and the Imperial fault to the south,” the USGS says. Previous swarms happened in 1991 and 2012. The swarm most likely will continue for several days, possibly including quakes up to 5.4 magnitude, but there’s a slim chance of a major earthquake registering 7.0 magnitude or higher, the agency says.
New Layoffs Add to Worries Over U.S. Economic Slowdown (NYT) The American economy is being buffeted by a fresh round of corporate layoffs, signaling new anxiety about the course of the coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty about further legislative relief. Companies including Disney, the insurance giant Allstate and two major airlines announced plans to fire or furlough more than 60,000 workers in recent days, and more cuts are expected without a new federal aid package to stimulate the economy. With the election a month away, an agreement has proved elusive. The White House and congressional Democrats held talks on Thursday before the House narrowly approved a $2.2 trillion proposal without any Republican support. It was little more than a symbolic vote: The measure will not become law without a bipartisan deal. After business shutdowns in the early spring threw 22 million people out of work, the economy rebounded in May and June with the help of stimulus money and rock-bottom interest rates. But the loss of momentum since then, coupled with fears of a second wave of coronavirus cases this fall, has left many experts uneasy about the months ahead.
Subway’s bread (Foreign Policy) The Irish Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the bread used by the popular fast food sandwich chain Subway can no longer legally be classified as bread due to its high sugar content, saying it is closer to a “confectionary or fancy baked good.” The case emerged after a Subway franchisee insisted it shouldn’t have to pay a value-added tax on the bread because it is a staple food, which doesn’t require the payment of taxes in Ireland. The law, however, states that in order for a food to be considered a staple, sugar cannot exceed 2 percent of the weight of the flour. Subway’s bread contains 10 percent sugar.
Europe moves to sue Britain over breaching Brexit withdrawal deal (Washington Post) The European Union launched legal action against Britain on Thursday, saying Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s attempt to rewrite the Brexit withdrawal agreement was “by its very nature a breach of the obligation of good faith.” In Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said legislation now moving through Parliament was in “full contradiction” to Britain’s previous guarantee to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland. The E.U. is now sending a “letter of formal notice,” which could lead to a legal showdown in the European Court of Justice. Britain has a month to reply. Government ministers earlier acknowledged that their domestic legislation would violate international law. A British government spokesperson said Thursday, “We will respond to the letter in due course.”
After 2 Years of Paralysis, Belgium Forms a (Very Fragile) Government (NYT) For nearly two years, Belgium has been without a formal government, leaving a country that was already divided by language and politics to endure a pandemic with lame-duck caretakers wielding emergency powers. A fragile coalition government finally took power on Thursday, ending one of the longest political stalemates in the Western world. Cobbled together from seven political parties, the partnership keeps a growing far-right movement at bay for now and should allow the country to finally pass a budget and consider a Covid-19 recovery package. But the transition, which is set to be formally adopted by lawmakers this weekend, is not without risk. The governing coalition is now so large that any disagreement has the potential to topple it. And ushering in a new government means forcing out the ministers who have overseen the pandemic response—at a time when infections and hospitalizations are rising.
France announces new coronavirus restrictions as covid-19 cases rise (Washington Post) The French government Thursday announced a set of measures it said it was ready to impose to contain a rapid resurgence of the coronavirus. For weeks, the country has relied on a regional system to implement restrictions in areas where transmission rates of the virus are high. On Thursday, Health Minister Olivier Véran said Paris could soon join the “maximum” risk category, which would mean another complete shutdown of bars, restaurants and cafes. Some cities, notably Marseille, are already on the list. Paris so far has avoided further restrictions since a lockdown was lifted in mid-May. But Véran said that in the last 24 hours, the capital crossed multiple thresholds that make it a maximum-risk environment.
Vatican snubs Pompeo (Foreign Policy) Pope Francis declined to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his visit to the Vatican on Thursday over concerns that doing so could drag him into the U.S. presidential election. “Yes, he asked [to meet with Francis,]” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, “But the pope had already said clearly that political figures are not received in election periods. That is the reason.” Pompeo has been pressing the Vatican to condemn China’s human rights abuses, especially in Xinjiang province. Despite not getting an audience with Francis, Pompeo still met with other senior Vatican officials, discussing religious freedom as well as their differences on China.
Harvest workers among COVID world’s last regular travelers (AP) Her hands were hardly visible, so quickly did they press the clippers before dropping grape clusters into red plastic bins. Some distance behind her, in the next row over, Italian students subbing in due to a pandemic-fueled worker shortage tried vainly to catch up. Alexandra Ichim had never worked in vineyards before traveling to Italy’s Lombardy region for the September grape harvest, known in Italian as the vendemmia—the pay is too low in Romania and the working conditions too harsh, she says. For the Italian work, the 20-year-old came on a 12-hour bus ride and returned by plane to her native Arad region when the harvest was done. Eastern European seasonal workers, led by Romanians, are considered essential to getting food on the table throughout the continent. Their willingness to work hard in uncertain jobs for lower wages is sought after abroad, and their income is desperately needed at home. At a time when travel for work is seen as dangerous for everyone, they are among the world’s last regular border-crossers. Around one in five Romanians works abroad. Italy is the top destination for 1.2 million of them, with France and Spain not far behind. Workers can make around 1,200 euros a month working eight-hour days during the vendemmia in Italy, versus around 700 euros for a month of 10-hour days in Romania.
Withdrawal or nothing (Foreign Policy) Azerbaijan has raised the stakes in its ongoing clashes with Armenia, demanding that the country withdraw from the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh as a necessary condition to restoring peace. “We have only one condition,” said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, “the Armenian armed forces must immediately and definitely leave our lands in full force. If the Armenian government complies with this condition, the fighting and bloodshed will stop.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose country has strong cultural and military ties to Azerbaijan, echoed Aliyev’s statement while pledging Turkey’s full support for its “brother country.” Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a commander of Turkish-backed rebels in Syria reported that Turkey has facilitated the transfer of hundreds of Syrian fighters from Syria to Azerbaijan; the Turkish government denies the allegation.
Indian phones to have government software installed (Times of London) India is said to be considering a plan to make it mandatory for almost all new mobile phones to have government software pre-installed, raising the prospect of the state being able to closely monitor citizens. The proposal is part of a wider plan for the country to establish its own app store, independent of those offered by Apple and Google, according to The Economic Times, citing unnamed government sources. It would involve pre-loading government apps on to Android phones, which account for 96 per cent of the market in India. One such app is Namo, which allows supporters of Narendra Modi, the prime minister, to view videos of his speeches.
Coronavirus sparks Philippines online barter trade (Reuters) In the middle of a coronavirus lockdown in the Philippine capital, Grace Lagaday was struggling to breastfeed her newborn without milk storage bottles and nursing pads. With shopping centres shut and public movement restricted, Lagaday turned to a centuries-old method of trade with a new tech twist: online bartering. A search of Facebook barter trade groups found the supplies she needed for her baby girl and they were in Lagaday’s hands the next day, in return for bags of M&Ms chocolates and a jar of Nutella spread. “For a mom who gave birth during this pandemic season, bartering helped me find good deals for my baby.” Lagaday, who has since traded clothes hangers for five kilograms of rice and an electric mosquito killer for two litres of cooking oil, is among hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who have joined Facebook barter groups in recent months. Reuters has identified just over 100 barter groups, some with as many as a quarter of a million members, have sprung up since the Philippines’ main island of Luzon, home to half its 107 million population, entered a hard lockdown in mid-March that lasted two months.
