2) What little thing instantly tells you that a person is good? I'm not really sure honestly. I'm suspicious of everyone I meet, and I'm very bad with body language. But usually a kind seeming smile and a greeting is good? How they talk to me going from that is also good as well. I guess?

3) Do you have a recurring dream? Not anything I can remember. I have this one thing that if I remember it I get intensely sick. It's something I have dreamed before, and never remember it after I stop being sick

4) What is the most interesting class you have taken? Hm... I really liked the advanced first aid/ medical based class that I can't remember the name of. My teacher was a part-time fire fighter and he made me genuinely interested in the things he was teaching

♣️ The Space Between Sleep by Tattered_Dreams (Complete)

As weeks pass after the Tsunami, Christopher has Eddie to help him deal with the scars it left behind. He also has Buck. Buck's dealing with his own demons, but he has both of them.

Eddie's trying to keep them all together and finding out his family might not be as small as he thought.

The 118 have their few cents to add, too, because don't they always.

This is one of my favorite Buddie fics. It deals with the aftermath of the tsunami in a way that is absolutely beautiful and realistic and authentic. Christopher and Buck's relationship, and Eddie and Christopher's relationship are perfection. A thing I also really love is that it's not just a Buddie fic, it has the firefam, Maddie and Eddie'sfamily involved in a way that's just natural.

♣️ The King's Tide by yawnralphio (@dearbuck) (WIP with Regular Updates)

A captain, his ship, her crew, and a secret with the power to ruin it all.

When his merchant transport vessel is boarded by the fearsome Captain Nash and the crew of the Spark, Eddie believes his time has come.

Buckck makes him an offer he can't refuse, and he finds himself tangled up in something much bigger than he planned for.

I have never read a pirate AU fic. I have never been interested in reading a pirate AUs. But this one changed my mind. The storytelling is amazing. This author paints images with their words, and they have built an amazing, nuanced world here. With every chapter, a question is answered, and a few arise, but it's handled so well you won't be impatient and confused half the time. The friendships, the relationships, here are beyond amazing too.

♣️ Tethers by red-to-black (@redtooblack) (WIP)

Eddie's spent years trying to find a place to call home with Christopher, hoping that Shannon will come back and then desperately hoping she wouldn't. He thinks he's in the clear when she shows up at his doorstep, demanding they get back together.

Eddie comes up with a foolproof plan: get a fake boyfriend, convince Shannon he's gay, and live happily ever after with his life mostly intact and Christopher safe and happy. Get rid of fake boyfriend when Shannon gives up, and life can resume as normal.

Enter Buck, and the plan goes to hell in a handbasket.

Where do I start with this fic? First of all, it's fake dating- which is a trope I love. But it's so, so much more than that. It shows both Eddie and Buck fighting their demons, and being good for each other. It shows two adults navigating a relationship in both a healthy and realistic way. The author incorporates Canon in this fic in an amazing, seamless way. Christopher and Buck's relationship in this is perfection. I have reread this fic about five times. Tempted to reread again, ngl.

Medium Length Fics (10-50k)

Eddie, Buck, and Christopher figuring out how to be a family.

This series has two amazing sickfics and one WIP that shows how the team, and Buddie specifically, handle the pandemic. I love these works a lot, they're always in character, always realistic and tender, and Buck and Christopher's relationship shines through, as does the love between the Diaz boys.

❄ The Ghosts That You Haunt by JessicaMDawn

The first time Evan Buckley died, he was ten.

"Apparently that won me a ticket to ghost town, because I've been seeing them ever since."

Buck can see the recently dead. It's not as glamorous as people might think.

This AU is wonderful. It's not the typical character can see ghosts fics. It's so very emotional and angsty and it hits all the right spots. Buck is such an amazing character here. The emotions are vivid and beautiful and realistic. I LOVE it.

❄ Scratch and Burn by JessicaMDawn

Christopher scratches Buck during the tsunami, but the rest of the debris hurts a lot more and Buck thinks nothing of it. The next day, however, Buck experiences a lot of changes that he doesn't know how to handle. Luckily, Eddie is there to help him through it.

Not ABO. This Werewolf AU is perfection. I love Buck's relationship with both Eddie and Christopher here. I won't say more to not spoil it, but it truly is wonderful.

After getting hurt on a call, Buck wakes up thinking it's 2018. AKA Buck can't remember who Eddie is but he's pretty sure everyone's lying when they say they're "just friends."

This fic is nothing short of perfection. Amnesia fics require a very delicate balance, and this one managed that perfectly. Misunderstandings, oblivious idiots in love, it has it all. The firedam's relationships with Buck is amazing, and they shine through here.

Whipping his head around, his eyes land on a face he hasn’t seen up close in almost a year.

“Eddie?” he gasps in disbelief, taking in the sight of Eddie’s rumpled appearance. His shirt is ripped, Buck can see scrapes on his forearms where his sleeves are pushed up, and he’s got a nasty gash across his forehead, blood trickling down into his eyebrow. But he’s looking at Buck like he’s a prayer and a miracle all wrapped into one. “Eddie!”

His brain finally catches up with his legs and he rushes forward just as Eddie all but collapses into his embrace.

“Thank god,” Eddie heaves out raggedly, fingers clutched tightly in the back of Buck’s turnout coat.

I absolutely love this concept of Eddie replacing Abby on the train. This fic is sweet, cute and emotional. The characters are all spot on and just- it's AMAZING.

💭 help my life (be worth your while), a series by iriswests

This series is a study in perfect pacing. It has pining, it has Eddie exploring his relationship with faith and it is possibly the perfect scenario for how these two can get together.

18. current number of wips

*opens up stories folder* Uh... we're looking at 4 active WIPs, of which 3 are for 9-1-1 (Chaotic Energy Part 3, Buddie Smut, Tucker Davies sequel) and 1 is an ancient one for Naruto that I might actually legitimately finish. I have 2 abandoned 9-1-1 WIPs because I started writing them as like... speculation in advance of some episodes this season but never finished them in time, and of course they did not align at all with canon in the end, and I simply do not know what to do with them?

I have another 3 that are at this point just titles and maybe some outlining because I've thought them up but haven't actually written anything yet.

23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t

Okay so... one of the 3 "just a title and maybe some outlining" fics I mentioned above has a massive outline because it is for a multi-chaptered AU to be titled, "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" where the 118 is a bodyguarding agency and Taylor Kelly (TV personality) and Ana Flores (Actress) need bodyguarding. Taylor Kelly engaged the 118, and Eddie, fresh out of the military, is working for a different bodyguarding agency and is guarding Ana. Eddie and Buck keep meeting because Taylor covers a lot of the events / shows that Ana is at, and they vibe, and there's also action and drama. All my chapters are titles to different Whitney Houston songs, because clearly I was vibing on Whitney Houston's bodyguard movie from back in the day when I dreamed this up. But... actually writing it scares me because what if it sucks and what if no one wants to read it and so I haven't done it yet.

But maybe I will. Someday. Probably.

24. favorite fic you read this year

THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE because I just got back into fanfiction this year AND into 9-1-1 fanfiction specifically and this fandom is overflowing with talent and I have read 4 years worth of fics in the space of 8 months. I have never seen this many fantastic writers all in one place before and it blows my mind. Someone tell me which fandom y'all move to when you stop fixating on 9-1-1 because wherever you are going I want to follow.

I am going to cheat, aggressively, and name a handful that I have reread multiple times just this year alone:

Those Two Firefighters by DarkFairytale

This is an absolute classic. It's super fun, mostly POV outsider and pokes a lot of fun at fandom culture. I adored it.

What can even be said? It's hot. It's exceptionally well written. It's fun. Different first meeting because Buck spends some time in his pre-118 travels working as a stripper and Mexico and Eddie has a bachelor party to go to.

It's a WIP but it's 300k+ and already feels like 3 completed stories in one. AU where Buck is a firefighter who also does the fake boyfriend thing on the side, and Eddie is new to LA and trying to get his ex-wife off his back so he decides to engage Buck as his fake boyfriend, even though Eddie, himself, is obviously 100% straight no doubt about it.

This is my comfort fic. Different first meeting AU where Eddie and Buck are both firefighters but for different houses and they both get sent to therapy given the events of Season 3 and they decide to do the couples therapy thing because it's funny but also will keep them accountable to actually getting therapy.

Leave the Light On (I'll Be Coming Home) by HMSLusitania

If you want to cry your eyes out with the promise of a happy ending then this is the place for you. Hayley really knows how to masticate your heart and then make it all better with beautiful romance. AU in which Eddie "dies" (temporarily) and Buck becomes Christopher's guardian.

Set during the lawsuit era where there is a misunderstanding and everyone thinks Buck died in a plane crash, except he actually had just switched to a different flight and doesn't know about the issue. Huge amounts of angst and reconciliation ensues. Another great one if you feel like crying and are in the mood for Lawsuit Arc.

I have about 100 more to add to this so I guess check out my AO3 bookmarks too because I already went 800% overboard with this since my brain blue screened when asked to pick just ONE fic for 2021.

I'm trying to get this finished and edited to post for the next day of Sicktember 😁

Turning down the stove to let the soup simmer, Eddie moves to stand behind Buck, his hands coming to rest on the back of his neck. “You still feel warm,” he says, and Buck melts under the touch as Eddie rubs small circles into his skin with his thumbs. “You should probably take another day off work.”

“Mm, I already sent Bobby a message.”

Eddie’s soft laugh ruffles his hair. “Look at you being responsible. I never thought I’d see the day.”

54. Any writing advice you want to share?

Maybe just; write what you think will make you happy. Don't worry about the opinions of others. It's very difficult to engage in a something if you're not doing it for yourself, so just have fun ❤

wheeew this took a while because of the fic recs (you probably already fell asleep lmao sorry)

okay so 5 things i’d like to see in s5:

- eddie having a proper recovery arc reflecting on his time in the army, touching on dealing with ptsd and physical therapy

- maddie having a proper arc regarding postpartum depression and chimney being there for her as he always is while she recovers

- uncle buck!! i need to see him and jee interact (also uncle albert!!)

- them showing eddie breaking up with ana or having detailed discussions about the whys if it happens between the two seasons (i want eddie to be the one breaking up with her because he realises what HE wants and needs!)

- christmas episode with the firefam (i deeply missed it this season😭 i understand we only had limited time due to there only being 14 episodes but i wanted those fluffy firefam scenes so i’m a tiny bit bitter about that)
