the three modalities

modalities are known as the qualities of the signs or the way that they work. each of the three modalities (cardinal, fixed and mutable) includes four astrological signs, each from one element (fire, earth, water and air). the four elements each represent one characteristic: fire represents spirit, water respresents emotion, air represents intellect, and earth represents the physical.

fixed modality

fixed modality is associated with taurus, leo, scorpio and aquarius. the fixed signs do what they say they will, and their basic way of behaving is to fix in place that which was initiated by cardinal signs. they have the staying power to make plans projects and the ideas of the cardinal signs. fixed signs generally like continuity and dislike change.

mutable modality

mutable modality is associated with gemini, virgo, sagittarius and pisces. they are flexible, changeable and versatile. they can see all of the sides of the issues and cope well when life throws change at them. however, they easily lose focus and purpose in life and are likely to suffer from being easily distracted.
