Similar to a portion of Lindsey’s post, I pick up on The Matrix vibes as well. But I think that it might be fair to say that we are already “hooked up” (but wirelessly, of course) with the way that we have become almost codependent on technology. With the last few years of transitioning online, we’ve all had to adapt to the technology. Wifi, laptop cameras, working mics, are all ways we’ve been plugged into the network. We’ve become used to the process of logging into our preferred software and trying to communicate with one another. And that’s just for work or school. 

As Rushkoff writes, his own neighbors have entertained themselves with the digital age, with VRs, with anything that might insulate them from a harsh reality. Although, we may be attempting to create an escape from reality to the virtual, we are still met with logging off and shutting down our tech, and I think escaping, that digital world. 

Perhaps then, it’s no wonder why there’s more and more interest in RPGs, (Animal Crossing comes to mind), with the way that we desire autonomy of our (digital) selves.
