The Colchian Dragon 🐉🔮🏆

January's subject theme was "dragon" to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year 🧡 We meet this dragon during Jason and the Argonaut's quest to steal the Golden Fleece from King Aeëtes of Colchis. The fleece hung on the branches of an oak tree, and was guarded by a fearsome dragon. According to myth, Jason was helped by the king's sorceress daughter, Medea, who put the dragon to sleep with a special potion allowing them to access the hanging treasure. In one version of events depicted on this redfigure (courtest of Theoi.com), Jason was first swallowed and disgorged by the dragon, which is being shown here. I really, really like rhytons, which are basically the Ancient Greek and Persian equivalent of mugs with animal faces on the bottom. They were also used ceremonially for sacred libations of wine or blood. I'm not sure what kind of ceremony a unicorn skull vessel would be used for though...
