From Bauhaus to sukekiyo
Don't hate me but someone had to do it*:
I just got online, and was immediately reminded that the ICONIC Daniel Ash (BAUHAUS) completed 67 years - Happy Birthday!
Tumblr media
Then suddently my neurodivergent-dumbdumb had to immediatly google him because I haven't heard anything from him in a while (and I was afraid that... you know 🤡).
The bad news is that my ADHD is still holding hostage my cognitive function - that's why I don't remember seing anything new from him.
And the good news is that not only he is alive (and I don't have to mourn another hero from my childhood) but he is still kicking ass on stage!! I've just read «Tones on Tail’s First Performance in 40 Years at Cruel World Fest 2024» and this dude has the audacity of looking and sounding the same!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's not only the guitarist for the iconic goth band Bauhaus, he also leads two other bands (Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets), is listed as inspiration for many other lengendary guitarists (for example: Hide from X JAPAN, John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers, and so on) but what schoked me knowing was:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HE REMIXED SUKEKIYO'S MANIERA? HOW DIDN'T I NOTICE THIS BEFORE? (my adhd strikes again) Obviously I had to check sukekiyo's website and, indeed that info is correct. But then I ended up on their own wikipedia page, and - what a sad small «history» they have.
Tumblr media
So, if anyone is a big sukekiyo fan, wants to take some time and learn how to do a proper biography on wikipedia (always with references/links, otherwise your changes will be deleted) and knows more than this, please contribute. I've already did my part * and I had to add the Daniel Ash reference 😎
Tumblr media
It's such a cool connection, and I think it deserves to be more visible.

Seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers perform "Can't Stop" yesterday as part of the Paris Olympics' symbolic hand-off to LA gives me the perfect opportunity to tell you all something about the lineage of this song's very famous riff! So gather 'round!
Here's what you need to know: RHCP were not actually the first ones to officially release a song that sounded like this riff. Have a listen to this track by a band from Hamburg, Germany called the Cucumber Men, whose "Ich kenne den bruder" ("I Know the Brother") was issued as a single in 1996, around six years before "Can't Stop" ended up appearing on RHCP's By the Way:
youtube
So you obviously hear it, right? Both melody and guitar tone are *really* similar. And maybe you'd think, okay, this could just be a coincidence, though, right? I mean, people have incidentally made music that sounded remarkably similar to something else that had previously come out that they didn't know about. It happened with "Sweet Child o' Mine," didn't it?!
But here's a piece of info that thickens the plot: you know why these guys *also* chose to name themselves after a piece of produce? Because they actually started out as a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band! 🤯
So for years I thought I had this super interesting bit of trivia on my hands that most Americans and Wikipedia were both totally ignorant of. There was this band from Germany that idolized the Red Hot Chili Peppers who released an original single in the mid-90s, and then someone in RHCP or close to them became aware of that single, and then a bunch of years later, RHCP ripped it off to make "Can't Stop" themselves, which would become one of the most popular hits in their entire discography. Both crazy and pretty unethical!
But then one day I got some more crucial info that thankfully helped solve this whole mystery and ended up clearing RHCP of any wrongdoing. In *1985*, the Chili Peppers did a live performance in Germany on a nationally televised music program called Rockpalast, which you can watch on YouTube:
youtube
Here, at the very beginning of this set at the 1:30 mark, you can watch Flea open things up with the riff that would later go on to yield "Can't Stop"—around 17 years before the release of the song itself.
So in the end, the Cucumber Men likely had nothing to do with "Can't Stop." No one from RHCP had probably known about "Ich kenne den bruder," and even if they did, the idea for "Can't Stop" obviously originated with this riff that was played by Flea in this German set in 1985. What's far more likely is that at least one member from the Cucumber Men saw the Rockpalast set and decided to repurpose the opening Flea riff from it for their own band's single more than a decade later.
Fun adventure I just took you all on, though, right? 😅

When listening to music, I provide fun facts (Ex. This played during Season 2, Episode 13 of Gossip Girl) and when “Californication” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers comes on, I explain that Alderaan is Princess Leia’s home planet which exploded and my bf’s like “uh huh.”

THIS.
"Video Game Music" is NOT a genre. It's "music that exists in a video game". You can't keep labeling everything "VGM" as if Life Will Change, The Song of The Dragonborn, Chemical Plant Zone, and Zelda's Lullaby are all the same genre of song. That's like putting Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, Devo, and Red Hot Chili Peppers together in a playlist and calling it "80s genre". Grouped together by a common theme, but NOT the same genre at all.
Just like I begged people for years to add video game music to their playlists because video games contain excellent music, I am BEGGING people who listen to NOTHING BUT video game music to do some research and add some NON-vgm of the same genres to their playlists. There are plenty of resources out there to help you find non-vgm that sounds like what you like. Hell, even the Wikipedia entry for any game can tell you a bit about what kind of music is featured in it.
really not a fan of entire (mostly black) music genres being compressed and confined to being seen as "video game" music to be totally honest

(Via Wikipedia)
About Dani California:
“Dani California” is the first single and the opening track on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ninth studio album, Stadium Arcadium.
Dani is a made up girl that RHCP reference in many of their popular songs, such as “By the Way.” She is described by Anthony Kiedis as a combination of every girl he has ever met.
The song was noticed to be very similar to Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” but Petty had no problem with the similarities.

TIL pink peppercorns aren’t the same plant as other peppercorns, and can cause allergic reaction because they’re in the cashew family. Black, green, white, and red peppercorns are all the same plant, with no relation to cashews.
While cooking yesterday, I wasn’t paying attention and used the “pour” section of my pepper container, not the “sprinkle” section.
Whoo boy. I had now made weapons-grade crab salad for my sandwiches. I like black pepper, enough to get teased by family for how much I put in things, but this is a can-you-stand-it challenge.
This lead to looking up ways to fix it, and because I’m me, a stop at Wikipedia to work out if rules for capsaicin will apply.
The mouth heat of pepper is not capsaicin (knew that) so not all the tricks work, but some do. I ended up doubling the amount of crab salad I’d meant to make by bulking the hell out of it with veg, mostly carrot (wishing I had cabbage right now, frankly), to deal with spreading the pepper out, per bite, and handle the amount of mayo I added to have a burn-dampening effect.
1. I may have a new fish/crab salad recipe to work out, with enough veg to make my dr happy.
2. I am now reading hot sauce ingredients lists, because if it’s rhapsodizing about which chili peppers are used, but peppercorns are key but unsung, I have composition questions.
The sensation on the roof of my mouth during did-this-fix-it testing was surprisingly similar to tasting hot sauce samples.

DEATH BY dojo CHOCOLATE with red hot chili peppers and what it could do to you.
Tumblr media
Every once in a while the mischievous child in me takes over. This is one of the those moments. This blog is the result of that mood. One of my students, a clinical psychologist, told me that for my age I have a very young and sprited mind. Sometimes I feel intellectually giddy, but these character shifts rolls along with my biorhythm rollercoaster agitation of these periodical moods and there is nothing I can do to control it as it controls me.

JÖJJÖN EGY HOSSZABB SZÖVEG, NAGYBETŰVEL A CÍMÉBEN
Tumblr media
próba a témát illetően

From Wikipedia:
In 1988, Peligro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers replacing drummer Jack Irons. Guitarist Hillel Slovak had recently died of a heroin overdose and was replaced by guitarist DeWayne McKnight. Peligro had been friends with the band for years and even at one point was in a joke band called Three Little Butt Hairs with singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea. McKnight was fired three shows into their tour in September 1988 and was replaced by John Frusciante. Peligro would last a bit longer than McKnight, helping to write some songs on the band's fourth album, Mother's Milk, which was released the following year, although Peligro did not perform on the album. Due to his ongoing drug and alcohol issues, the band decided to fire Peligro in November 1988. Peligro didn't handle his firing well. Flea said that he stayed in bed for days after making the decision to fire Peligro. Years later, Kiedis said firing Peligro was one of the toughest things the band ever had to do, although Kiedis became a major part of Peligro's road to sobriety, which began right after he was fired. Chad Smith replaced Peligro a few weeks later and has been with the band ever since.
