Na primeira vez que eu vim pra Barcelona o @favelaframa me convidou pra correr o Red Hook. E eu só aceitei porque uns meses antes eu tinha corrido o @daemoncycling crit. Naquela época não existia nenhum calendário nacional de provas pra pinhão fixo e essa era a única corrida responsa que a gente tinha no ano. Mas desde que a data era anunciada vários times começavam a aparecer, rolês ilegais eram convocados à noite e mesmo sem apoio ou incentivo a gente se organizava pra treinar. Eu gentilmente apelidei esse fenômeno de “Efeito Daemon” e nos últimos dias venho acompanhando seu último manifestar. Particularmente, acho que o Efeito Daemon contribuiu bastante com uma sucessão de fatos bacanas na minha vida. On Saturday we will participate again in the Red Hook Crit in Barcelona. It is pretty rainy and chilly right now. Fingers crossed that the conditions will be better by Saturday. 😎

Wheelie great skills

About 30 youngsters took part in a free community biking event in north Peckham last month, which featured racing and bike stunts by wheelie legend In Da Air Lew among others.

Cunning Stunts was organised by Mat Watson and Germain Burton from south London-based race team One Life Cycle. They compete in the Red Hook Crit, a gruelling four-race series in New York, London, Milan and Barcelona that is described as the “Formula One of cycling”.  

Mat started out as a street racer who now rides legitimately, while Germain was a former member of the Great Britain Cycling Team and has ridden with Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins. His dad Maurice Burton was the first black British cycling champion.

“We wanted to do something for the community,” Mat said. “We’re putting on events around London for kids and aiming to give them some stability and focus. It’s a bit like how boxing reaches out to young people – we’re doing the same sort of thing but with cycling.”

The inaugural event, which took place in Bird in Bush Park and the surrounding streets, saw Mat and Germain link up with In Da Air Lew (@indaair_lew), who regularly updates his 50,000 Instagram followers with photos and videos of his impressive wheelie skills.

“The first event was a success and the kids had a really good time,” said Mat. “There’s a lot of kids who are wheeling around and we want to reach out to that side of things and make what they do a legitimate sport.”

Germain and Mat have given talks at various youth centres around London and have also done a presentation at Battersea-based charity Carney’s Community, which works with disadvantaged and excluded young people.  

“We hope the events will give the kids a sense of belonging – they’re meeting like-minded people who are all into the same thing,” Mat said. “We want to help them and give them good guidance. It’s a much better way to spend their Saturdays than hanging out on the streets.”

[:de] Das Red Hook Criterium ändert seine Regeln, wie man sich für das Finale qualifiziert. Und zwar werden insgesamt fünf Heats mit jeweils 60 Fahrern gefahren. Jeweils die ersten drei des Heats qualifizieren sich direkt fürs Finale auf der Superpole (insgesamt 15 Fahrer), die Plätze 4-18 jedes Heats sind auch direkt im Finale. Dann kommen die Plätze 19-30, die sich für das Last Chance Race…
