First Snowfall of the Year - Sean MacGuire x Reader

Plot: You and Sean celebrate the first snowfall of the year with some needed quality time.

Warnings: None

Word Count: 522

Ever since Colter, you've despised the snow.

It's been eight years since then but the memories of almost freezing to death were still raw.

That's why when you awoke in yours and Sean's newly built homestead and saw that it snowed overnight, you audibly groaned. Sean grumbled at your groaning and turned over, his green eyes fluttering open "What is it?" he asked, sitting up. You pointed to the window, the ground was covered in a soft, white blanket.

Sean blinked sleepily, his brow furrowing as he followed your finger to the window. He chuckled once he saw the snow "There's no reason to be groanin' bout' a lil snow, love," he said, laying back down on the bed. You let out a sigh "It is," you tell him "We have chores to do and I don't want to do it in a bunch of snow," you finish, sitting on the edge of the bed, about to get up.

You felt a hand wrap around your wrist and your body being pulled back on the bed. Sean chuckled and kissed your forehead, as he looked down at you "Stay with me, love, just for a few more minutes," he said, laying down and pulling you to where your back was pressing up against his chest.

"Fine," you, teasingly, sigh and let him rest his head on your shoulder. Thinking more and more about the snow made you anxious, you shoved the thoughts away, you had Sean and a warm house, you weren't going to freeze to death.

"Always so eager," he said, kissing the back of your neck "Chores can wait, it's just me an' you now." You smiled softly, basking in his attention, even though you both had tons of chores to get done today. "It's just...after Blackwater, we had to travel in the freezing cold, you weren't there of course, but I almost froze to death if it wasn't for Arthur," you explained to him, your heart tightening in your chest at the mention of your fallen friend. Sean sighed "I know, love, but you're safe now, you're not in the middle of the mountains, you're with me."

"Just lay in bed, stay with me for a while, chores can wait," he murmured, feeling up your body. You smiled and turned your head towards him "What do you think you're doing, Mr. MacGuire?" you ask. Sean smirks "I think ya know what I'm doin, Mrs. MacGuire." Sean rubs his hands up and down your body, and before you know it, his hands are tickling your sides. You squeal in laughter "Sean!" you shriek "Stop!"

He laughs at your pitiful attempt to escape. "Sean!" you laugh as he kept tickling you. He stopped after you lost the ability to breath after a while and you gasped for air, still laughing. "That was not funny!" you gasped. Sean smirked "I think it was," he said, wrapping his arm around you "But seriously, love, let's lay down for a least a few more minutes."

As your heartbeat settled, for the first time, the snow that was falling outside didn't worry you one bit.

I hc that Sean knows a bit of Irish galeic or even fluent in it, ik now a days it's considered dying language (cough cough result colonization) if iirc it started "dying" around the 17th century

Now forgive me if I make any mistakes on my weak knowledge of Irish history, and correct me if I do!!!

Sean says he comes from Donegal, a county north west of Ireland. However, he has a very strong Dublin accent according to some Irish natives, which is vastly different from a Donegal accent. (highlighted in words like the pronunciation of brother like "brudda" etc) Some could speculate that could mean his Da was from Dublin, but moved to Donegal before ultimately going the USA. Often children can develop the accents of their parents despite outward influences, especially if he'd moved to be with other family from Dublin in Donegal. (My brother used to have a Mexican accent in school lmfao).

We can assume for this he was born around circa 1876, and seeing as he moved young, but still old enough to have good memory of his time in Ireland he probably left circa 1892, aprx -7 or +2.

This is a map showing the concentration of Irish speakers by 1871. In Dublin, the accent is almost non-existent. However in Donegal, it's clearly very widely spoken (I've highlighted the two places). If Sean was to have a Dublin accent from his Da, you can assume his main influence, the main person he spoke to was his Father, perhaps not much to other people in comparison as his accent isn't that influenced.

(For example I'm quite widely social and when I moved to the south when I was about 6 in two weeks I lost my HEAVY northern accent for a very southern one, whilst my brother who was quite private in his words kept a mexican accent from our Mother)

So I think Sean's Da probably didn't speak Irish Gaelic in it's full fluency or maybe even at all past 2 or 3 words, so he probably couldn't of taught him. Yet I still think he learnt a lot from Donegal, being a majority spoken Irish county, and being talkative himself must've learnt quite a bit. Perhaps fluently by the time he'd left for the USA.

i love the headcanon that the reason sean talks about his da so much is so he doesn't forget him

he was on the run with darragh since he was young as well, so i wouldn't be surprised if sean started to get upset with himself if he forgot certain parts of the stories he was telling the gang, or wasn't exactly quite sure what memories happened where and how old he was when it happened. he wants to remember every little thing about his da, no matter how small or minuscule others may view these small details as, since to sean, they're more important than anything else in the world

while it might be played off as just some sort of joke in the game or something along those lines, i like to think that it's more complicated than that

I have no idea if Sean ever mentions his ma, but she could've very well been from Donegal as well, then his father from Dublin, but I don't know if he ever mentions her or if something happened to her

I agree!! We really don't know enough about Sean, and to me he seems like he doesn't talk about heavy topics - perhaps to avoid being vulnerable

When characters are mean or outright aggressive towards him, Sean is very quick to respond light-heartedly and appear unbothered. Probably yes, he knows its banter, but even when the words seem like they are more of an attack, he makes it obvious too looks though he isn't affected

In comparison to other characters, too, his rare moments of vulnerability like when he speaks of his past, he still laughs, and is actively fighting against that defense system he uses to try and open up.

So I imagine he probably didn't have a good relationship with his mother, or even have a mother he knew to bring it up and risk looking weak in his eyes. Or perhaps since he father was on the run, you can imagine he wasn't one to have much time for romance, so had a story similar to that of Arthur and Eliza, in which he would only see her briefly before she died. (In this case Arthur had the child with him??)
