The Overlay Blending Mode In ON1
If you are trying ON1 Photo RAW, the ON1 plug-ins like ON1 Effects or ON1 HDR, or upgrading your ON1 software to a newer version, please consider using my affiliate link. There is no extra cost to you and it helps support ON1 tutorials like this one. Ready to buy? Use the offer code SDP20 at checkout and SAVE 20%!
This article is part of a mini-series about the blending modes in ON1 Photo RAW and ON1 Effects.
What Is The Overlay Blending Mode?
Overlay is the top member of the “contrast” group of blending modes for a reason. This mode increases contrast in a scene by darkening dark pixels and brightening lighter pixels. Overlay is one of the most popular blending modes, for its contrast boost is moderate and well-suited to many photos.
I use the Overlay blending mode in two cases often - texture blending and a finishing contrast pop.
Texture Blending With The Overlay Mode
The Overlay blending mode is my go-to mode for texture blending. It is a great starting point. While ON1 has the Textures filter in Effects, I prefer to do my texture blending in Layers. Using a layer gives me more control of the position a texture and opens up creative options to apply adjustments to the texture itself.
The recipe for blending a texture with the Overlay mode is straightforward:
Add a new layer to the layer stack
Use an ON1 Extras texture, one of your own textures, or navigate to any image on your computer
Switch the blending mode of the texture layer to Overlay
In the screenshots below, you can see how smoothly the texture blends into the base image after the switch to the Overlay blending mode.
After switching the blending mode, continue to refine your texture blend with layer Opacity and layer masks.
Pro tip: Apply Effects filters to the texture layer for more creative texture blends. I discuss these techniques in my oldie-but-goodie Texture Blending In ON1 Layers video course.
A Finishing Contrast Pop With The Overlay Blending Mode
The Overlay blending mode is an excellent finishing touch to your landscape photos. Also, you can tap into this blending mode directly in Effects. As the final adjustment to your editing, try this:
Add a Color Enhancer filter to the filter stack.
Click the Gear menu in the Color Enhancer filter and change the Blending Mode from Normal to Overlay.
Lower the Opacity slider to around 20%
That’s it. Toggle off and on the Color Enhancer you just added. See how your photo pops! The Overlay blend mode boosts contrast and enriches color in quite a natural way.
Pro tip: Add a custom style in the Color Enhancer filter for a faster workflow.
How Does Overlay Work In ON1 Effects?
Your photo passes through each filter in the filter stack from bottom to top. Along the way, its pixels are modified by the filter, and the resulting pixels are fed into the next filter up the stack and so on. The final set of pixels (your original photo and all of the adjustments from the filter stack) emerges from the top and that’s what you see in the preview area.
Adding another filter with the Overlay mode blends that sum total of pixels with itself, applying the contrast boost that makes the Overlay blending mode so lovable.
Why Use The Color Enhancer Filter?
You’ll have noticed that none of the sliders in the Color Enhancer filter are adjusted. The magic of this technique is the blending option, not the filter itself. I like using the Color Enhancer filter for this because its default settings make no change to the photo - all the sliders are set to zero. That makes the Color Enhancer perfect for leveraging blending modes to mix an image with itself.
Up Next
This series continues with another mode in the contrast group, the Soft Light blending mode.

The world of software development can sometimes feel like a medieval kingdom, complete with fortified castles and warring factions. In one corner, we have the valiant DevOps knights, armed with their agile methodologies and automation tools, charging forward to deliver software at lightning speed. In the other corner, we have the wise security mages, wielding their powerful spells and incantations to protect the kingdom from lurking threats. But here's the problem: these two essential groups often operate in isolation, like separate fiefdoms within the same kingdom. The DevOps knights, focused on speed and agility, may inadvertently leave the drawbridge down, allowing vulnerabilities to slip through the cracks. Meanwhile, the security mages, concerned with fortifying the castle walls, may inadvertently slow down the flow of progress with their rigorous checks and procedures. This siloed approach, where security and DevOps operate as separate entities, is not only inefficient but also downright dangerous in today's threat-filled landscape. It's like trying to win a battle with one hand tied behind your back. Imagine this: your DevOps team is racing towards a critical release deadline, eager to deploy the latest features and updates. But just as they're about to cross the finish line, the security team swoops in, waving a red flag and demanding a series of time-consuming security checks and fixes. The result? Frustration, delays, and a whole lot of finger-pointing. This scenario is all too common in organizations where security and DevOps operate in silos. It's a recipe for disaster, leading to slower release cycles, increased costs, and a higher risk of security breaches. But what if, instead of clashing swords (or keyboards), these two powerful forces joined forces? What if the DevOps knights and the security mages worked together, sharing their knowledge and expertise to create a truly secure and efficient software development kingdom? That's the power of breaking down silos between security and DevOps. It's about creating a culture of collaboration, where security is not an afterthought, but an integral part of the development process from start to finish. When security and DevOps become BFFs, amazing things can happen. Imagine a world where security is baked into every stage of the development lifecycle, like an invisible shield protecting your software from those lurking threats. Imagine a world where developers are empowered to write secure code from the get-go, guided by security best practices and supported by automated security tools. This collaborative approach not only leads to more secure software, but it also accelerates the development process. When security is integrated into the CI/CD pipeline, vulnerabilities are caught early on, preventing costly rework and delays later. It's like having a security expert riding shotgun with your development team, guiding them towards secure coding practices and helping them avoid those security potholes. But the benefits of breaking down silos go beyond just speed and security. It also fosters a more positive and productive work environment. When security and DevOps teams work together, they develop a shared understanding of each other's goals and challenges. This leads to better communication, less friction, and a greater sense of camaraderie. So, how do we actually tear down those pesky silos and build those bridges between security and DevOps? It starts with a shift in mindset. Both teams need to embrace a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility. Encourage open and honest communication between the two teams. Create opportunities for them to interact, share knowledge, and understand each other's perspectives. Organize cross-functional workshops, brown bag lunch sessions, or even just casual coffee breaks where security and DevOps team members can connect and learn from each other. Embrace automation as a powerful tool for breaking down silos. By automating security checks and integrating them into the development pipeline, you can reduce friction and ensure that security is consistently enforced without slowing down the development process. Develop a shared vision for security and DevOps, with clear goals and objectives that both teams can work towards. This helps create a sense of unity and purpose, reminding everyone that they're all working towards the same goal: building secure and high-quality software. Finally, don't forget to celebrate successes together. Recognize and reward the achievements of both security and DevOps teams, highlighting the positive outcomes of their collaboration. This helps build trust and reinforces the importance of working together. Breaking down silos between security and DevOps is not just a nice-to-have; it's a necessity in today's fast-paced and increasingly complex digital world. By fostering collaboration and shared responsibility, you can create a truly secure and efficient software development process. It's time to tear down those walls and unleash the power of unity. It has essential functionality such as bulking, mouthfeel, caramelization, freezing-point depression, and low hygroscopicity, making it suitable for existing food production systems. Tagatose has a minimal glycemic index of 3, as opposed to 68 for sucrose and 100 for glucose, making it ideal for people with diabetes. Tagatose is 92% sweeter than ordinary sugar and has a clean, no-aftertaste flavor profile. It is the first sweetener to achieve the NutraStrong prebiotic verified certification, confirming it as an attractive ingredient for businesses seeking functional, low-calorie products.

Navigating the World of POS Systems: Answers to Your Most Common Questions
When was the last time you visited a theme park and thought about the complex systems working behind the scenes? From buying tickets to grabbing lunch, a Theme Parks POS System is the backbone of the park’s operations. But how does it compare to systems used in retail shops, delis, spas, or even fuel stations? And how much does a retail POS system cost? Let’s dive deep into these different industries and see what makes their POS systems unique.
Tumblr media
What Exactly is a POS System and Why Should You Care?
Before we start talking about the Theme Parks POS System, Deli POS System, or even a spa POS system, let’s establish what a POS system really is. In simple terms, it’s where your customer makes the payment for goods or services they’re buying. It’s more than just a fancy till—it’s the heart of any business’s transactions. From tracking sales to managing inventory, it does all the behind-the-scenes work that makes running a business smoother.
Imagine trying to manually count all the sales made in a day. I know, right? It’s exhausting to even think about. That’s where POS systems come in, saving you time, effort, and making things incredibly accurate.
1. Theme Parks POS System: Keeping the Fun Going Smoothly
Think about your last trip to a theme park. Did you notice how fast the queue moved when you bought your ticket? You probably didn’t, and that’s the magic of a well-designed Theme Parks POS System. It’s tailored to handle large crowds, multiple transaction points, and integrate everything from food stalls to merchandise shops.
Here’s why a Theme Parks POS System is so crucial:
Fast Transactions: No one wants to wait in long lines for tickets or snacks. A good POS system makes sure the transactions are quick and easy.
Centralised Control: Imagine you have food stalls, ride tickets, and gift shops all around the park. A POS system for theme parks integrates all of them into one central system, making it easier for management to keep an eye on sales.
Inventory Management: It’s easy to run out of merchandise or food if you’re not keeping track. This system helps monitor inventory levels, so the fun never stops.
2. How Much Does a Retail POS System Cost?
I bet you’re wondering, how much does a retail POS system cost? Well, the answer isn’t as simple as it might seem. Retail POS systems come in all shapes and sizes, and the cost depends on the features you need, the size of your store, and the level of customisation.
Here are some factors that influence the cost of a retail POS system:
Number of Terminals: More terminals mean a higher cost. A small shop might only need one or two, while a large store could need ten or more.
Software Licensing: Some POS systems require you to pay for the software, either as a one-time fee or a subscription.
Hardware: This includes cash registers, receipt printers, barcode scanners, and card readers. The more advanced the hardware, the higher the price.
Generally, a basic retail POS system in the UK might start at around £1,000 but can go up to £5,000 or more, depending on your needs. Some companies offer monthly subscriptions that could range from £30 to £300, depending on the features you choose. It’s always worth comparing options to find the best fit for your business.
3. Deli POS System: Your Friendly Neighbourhood Deli’s Best Friend
Running a deli involves a lot of hustle and bustle. From quick sandwich orders to managing fresh produce, everything needs to be in sync. A Deli POS System can make this fast-paced environment manageable and profitable.
Here’s why:
Speed of Service: Your customers are in a hurry. They want their food fast, and your POS system needs to keep up. A deli POS system ensures that orders are processed quickly, so there’s no delay in the kitchen.
Custom Orders: In a deli, no two sandwiches are the same. You need a POS system that allows for modifications and custom orders with ease.
Recipe and Ingredient Tracking: Running out of ingredients? Your deli POS system can help track what’s in stock and alert you when it’s time to reorder.
It’s all about keeping your customers happy and coming back for more. And let’s face it—no one likes waiting too long for their food.
4. Spa POS System: Relaxing Made Easy
Spas are all about providing a seamless, relaxing experience for clients. But behind the scenes, there’s a lot of operational work going on. That’s where a spa POS system comes in.
Why do you need one?
Appointment Scheduling: Spa services run on appointments. With a spa POS system, customers can easily book appointments online, and your staff can manage the schedule without any confusion.
Client Profiles: Keeping track of your clients' preferences, services they’ve previously used, and any allergies they might have is key. A spa POS system helps you store and access this information effortlessly.
Retail Sales: Many spas also sell skincare products or other retail items. Your POS system needs to manage those sales while keeping your inventory up-to-date.
With a spa POS system, the goal is to keep everything as smooth and stress-free as possible—for both clients and staff.
5. Fuel POS System: Keeping the Pumps Flowing
Let’s not forget the specific needs of fuel stations. Managing a petrol station requires a POS system that can handle high-volume transactions and specialised needs like pump control and integration. A fuel POS system is built to manage just that.
What makes a fuel POS system unique?
Pump Control: These systems integrate directly with the fuel pumps, allowing for seamless control over dispensing.
Multi-Tasking: Fuel stations often have convenience stores attached. A fuel POS system manages both the fuel sales and the retail side of the business.
Payment Options: With fuel prices always fluctuating, customers want flexibility. A fuel POS system can handle cash, credit cards, fleet cards, and even contactless payments.
What Should You Look for in a POS System?
Whether you’re running a theme park, a retail store, a deli, a spa, or a fuel station, here’s a quick checklist for choosing the right POS system:
Ease of Use: You don’t want to spend hours training your staff. Look for a POS system that’s intuitive and easy to learn.
Customisation: Every business is different. Make sure the system can be customised to fit your specific needs.
Integration: Your POS system should integrate with other software you use, like accounting or inventory management tools.
Security: With sensitive customer information and transactions at stake, ensure the system is secure and PCI-compliant.
Scalability: As your business grows, your POS system should be able to grow with you.
Final Thoughts: Which POS System is Right for You?
It all boils down to your business needs. If you’re running a theme park, you need something that can handle multiple sales points and large crowds, like a Theme Parks POS System. If you’re managing a deli or spa, you need a POS system that’s tailored to fast service or appointment scheduling, like a Deli POS System or spa POS system. And if you’re running a fuel station, a fuel POS system is your go-to.
No matter what industry you’re in, the right POS system will streamline your operations, improve customer experience, and make your life a whole lot easier.
