Wildfires Devastate Los Angeles Schools & Outdoor Education Sanctuaries

These wildfires around Los Angeles have left a deep impact-from destroyed homes to devastated outdoor education spaces that were considered sanctuaries for the local families. For many, places like Eaton Canyon and Griffith Park provided a refuge where children could learn, connect with nature, and explore the world around them.

For parents like Irina Contreras, those natural areas had been something more than a place of learning; they were a sanctuary for their children to grow. Now, with many of those places reduced to ashes, families begin to deal with the psychological repercussions.

Apart from the wildfires that involved schools such as Odyssey Charter School in Altadena, entire communities were mourning the loss of nature-based programs that best allowed kids to connect with meaningful outdoor learning-particularly in the current pandemic era.

"PORTLAND IN FLUX" - A piece I made in 2018 in response to the massive building boom and total transformation of the city over the past 8 years. Growth and change are inevitable…I just wish the new Portland developments were done more thoughtfully by taking measures to protect historical buildings and build better support infrastructure. NOW...on a whole other scale, Portland and the world is in major flux. So much massive change is happening in an instant. While I also don’t like this forced hardship…I have hope that a pandemic this big will bring massive change and transformation that is needed. The world was running at such high political, economic, social, and environment tensions…it feels like the bubble has bursted and now we are forced to work together.
