in every life, i'll bully you:
you met leon in the fall of raccoon city three times. you two weren't aware of it, but it seemed your life got a small reboot. in the first time you met leon, you couldn't help but roll your eyes on how overly dramatic he was. his dark brown hair and his losses he took with ada. ada told leon to help her move a truck, leon and you helped, and she ran off. leon wanted to help ada like he helped you, but it was clear she didn't want help. or least proper help.
when ada was unconscious or barely conscious, leon kissed her cheek and a loud laugh escaped your lips. when ada ended up betraying them the first time, sure, it was unexpected when she fell million of feet down. but seeing leon's reaction made you jump. he fell into his knees and cried out ada's name. when everything in this night was over, you sat beside a young woman named claire and a young girl named sherry.
the second time, leon (now sandy blond hair) was with the woman you saw, claire, was with him. but you didn't know her. those damn reminds of life. leon was as cringeworthy as the first. you and claire looked down at leon and ada as they shared a kiss. a kiss of what? but it didn't matter as ada wong betrayed you guys again and fell to her death.
was leon an idiot in every world?
the third time was probably the lucky one, for some reason, everything felt more real in this one. leon acted a bit more normal, he smiled kindly at you and even tried to comfort you more. after all these life's, in this life you fell in love faster with him here, but did it even matter if they didn't remember their old lifes? because as always, ada wong came along with a different story than the previous. she was an fbi agent and not looking for her boyfriend. ada kept running away, and leon's stubbornness came into place once again.
when you three were in the tram, you sat beside ada as you healed up her thigh with the little things you had. but something was a bit different in leon's eyes. he wasn't as a moron like in his other lifes, he was uneasy when ada even kissed him. you looked away as a small laugh escaped. it felt so familiar. and boom! ada betrayed and fell into her death.
nothing really changed, huh?

Resident Evil 4 vs 8, and Ludonarrative Resonance
Having fallen so very hard for RE8 late last year, I’m incapable of talking about the new RE4 remake without comparing the two – especially when RE8 now occupies the bizarre position of being simultaneously the remake’s immediate predecessor, canonical-later-sequel, and also other pseudo-remake of RE4.
And it’s hard to appreciate just how much RE8 draws from RE4 until you’ve played them both – in broad concept (sinister bioweapon cult in isolated European village, lengthy castle section, awkward shift towards military-shooter-itis at the end – heck, did you know RE8 was even supposed to have Ada Wong showing up with a sniper rifle to rescue Ethan from cutscenes in early drafts? Because that was definitely going too far) and its initial chapter especially. I’d osmosed the broad strokes, but not, for example, the degree to which the first lycan attack in 8 is basically just the first village assault from RE4: mobbed by an endless stream of regular enemies and the one big guy (who you can defeat, but should probably just try to avoid) in an open environment until an invisible timer runs out and everyone goes home.
It’s not a one-way street: it’s only fair to say that by the time of RE4make, Capcom was re-integrating a lot of what worked in 8 back into the new RE4. But as many elements represent a conscious step back from the reinventions of RE7 in favour of recreating gameplay elements of the original: 3rd person view, visible health bar, etc. The same basic arsenal of pistol-shotgun-sniper-rile becomes available to you in that order, but trying to play Leon as you would Ethan is not going to come off seamlessly.
Leon he can’t block, for one. He can parry, but that’s not the same thing. His knife works very differently, many of its uses contextual. You have to aim before firing now – hitting fire without aiming first makes Leon slash with his knife instead (very annoying when I have the sniper rifle equipped, the enemy is too close for the scope to be useful, and failing to get a round off in a hurry is about to make my life a lot more uncomfortable) – and if you’re aiming, you can’t parry. The gameplay in the RE4 remake is honestly my favourite thing about it (the story is... more of a mixed bag, but we'll get to that), but coming to it directly off RE8 is just a little frustrating until you get your head around it. GDI, Leon, Ethan can make a decent mine that doesn’t go off on its own if it’s not tripped in 30 seconds, why can’t you?
Questionable nitpicks aside though, having gotten the hang of RE4’s combat, the more I think about it, the more the differences between how Ethan and Leon handle do actually work for me, and even make sense from a character-centric POV. Intentionally or not, there’s a kind of ludonarrative resonance to it all.
If you’ve read any video game critique in the last decade or so, you’ve likely run into the term ludonarrative dissonance: coined to highlight all those times when the story a game tells via dialogue and cutscenes clashes with the ‘ludonarrative’, or story created by the gameplay. The classic example is something like the Tomb Raider reboot, where cutscenes linger on the trauma of Lara's first human kill, but gameplay will still see her easily mowing down enemies mooks by the dozen barely five minutes later. See also: any time a character is a total badass in gameplay, but can be easily overpowered by a single opponent when necessary for a cutscene. This kind of narrative inconsistency is to some degree the nature of the medium – it’s a rare game that can avoid it altogether, but it can still throw you out of the experience.
For a more Resident Evil specific example, consider that minor plot point from RE6 which reveals that Sherry (one of the many playable characters) has an Ethan-like healing ability as a result of her exposure to the G-virus back in RE2. This has no effect on gameplay, before or after the reveal: Sherry’s health bar works the same as any other character’s. Even the RE4 remake hits this problem: letting Ashley be carried too far away by an enemy mook is an instant game-over in gameplay, but you’d better be prepared to see the exact same thing happen in multiple cutscenes at specified plot points, with no way to avoid it (c’mon, game, I know they’re just gonna stick her in a room with no guards somewhere, lemme go find her!)
You could arguably find a similar problem to Sherry’s in RE8, where Ethan very-canonically comes back from the dead after having his heart ripped out in a cutscene, even though he can absolutely be killed in regular gameplay. And yet, here, I’m inclined to cut the game some slack – because there is arguably an explanation provided, and it’s suitably horrific.
Ethan may be able to reattach severed limbs and walk off falls from great heights, but having his heart ripped out puts him down long enough to convince Chris he’s really dead – definitely down for the count. And if you pay attention to the (many) death-scenes that play after Ethan is killed by a lycan or moroi, you may notice that most monsters immediately start eating him as they light fades away. Ethan may come back after having his heart ripped out, but being digested may be a step too far.
And Ethan can get eaten a lot in this game. Moreau can eat you. The mould-foetus-monster can eat you. Dimitrescu makes pretty-fucking-clear her own desire to eat you too. Sturm doesn’t, but is certainly equipped to reduce Ethan to a fine, pink mist. Whether those final-moments were included specifically to fill that plot hole or whether they were just thrown in for ‘ordinary’ horror value I can only speculate, but it’s always nice when all those little, gory details tie together, isn’t it?
If we’re going to take games to task for all those probably-accidental moments where the gameplay and the story clash, it’s only fair to note a few of the ones where they do the opposite (likewise-accidental though they may be). Ludonarrative resonance, if you will.
On a basic level, pointing out that gameplay differences between RE4 and 8 make sense for Ethan’s vs Leon’s respective strengths and weaknesses may be a little too obvious. Leon can stagger an enemy with a bullet and then rush in to finish him off a roundhouse kick or a supplex because Leon is a certified badass with way more training than Ethan (who makes one vague mention of having had military training, presumably as an excuse for why he aims so much faster in RE8 than 7).
But it goes so far beyond that.
There’s the issue of blocking, for one. Ethan can block – roughly holding his hands up in front of himself to reduce incoming damage – but Leon can’t. This was initially annoying, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it as a logical change. Sure, Leon can’t block, but Leon doesn’t secretly have mould-powered super-healing, and trying to tank axe-blows to reattachable parts of his body probably isn’t a viable strategy. What he can do is parry with his knife: a more skill-dependent strategy for a more-skilled guy. Timing is much trickier, but only his knife takes damage – Leon doesn’t, so when it works, it’s much better than blocking. And given Leon has this whole backstory-thing about being trained by a knife-obsessed nutjob, that all adds up too.
Then there’s the thing with ladders. Ethan can fall any distance without taking damage, but convincing him to take a gravity-shortcut doesn’t always work: if there’s a ladder nearby, he’ll take it. Leon, by contrast, clearly sees ladders as a waste of time. Ashley will use them to get down from high places, if there’s one available, but Leon, to my joy, prefers to jump. And again, there’s an arguable logic there that appeals to me: Ethan may be immune to falling damage, but he’s badly in denial about it, and would much prefer to take the stairs. Leon isn’t superhuman, but he knows parkour, and he’s damn well going to use it.
Health arguably follows similar logic. Ethan doesn’t get a proper health bar (maybe you need training to accurately judge how dead you are? IDK), just various colours to tell you roughly how bad this is going, and Ethan will be reduced to stumbling through a distorted red haze if you let him go too far into the red zone. Stumble around long enough without dying though, and Ethan will eventually walk it off, automatically returning to about half-health. Notably, Leon doesn’t get this same power (unless you’re playing on the very easiest difficulty – Ethan remains auto-healing right up to Village of Shadows level). But for a dude who canonically has healing powers, you can’t argue that makes a lot of sense.
The same rules apply to Mia too, when you’re playing her in RE7 – but given she’s been infected with the mould too, that tracks (and even if you did choose her for the cure, who’s to say how well such a haphazard cure even worked?)
This logic does break down a bit in RE8 when you play as Chris, and blocking and walking-it-off remain core mechanics. And if you wanted to get really nitpicky, you might even point out the same mechanics are available to Ethan in his very first fight with Mia in RE7, where he’s (presumably?) not infected yet. But there comes a point where you have to admit that expecting the devs to change gameplay so much for one brief section of a much longer game isn’t really realistic (and would be that much more annoying to get used to for this one tiny section anyway).
Amusingly though, in the Mercenaries DLC, Chris has been reworked somewhat, and now can’t block anymore: hitting the ‘block’ button throws a left hook instead. Which is only too appropriate for Chris Boulder-Punching Redfield – but it’s interesting to note that Lady Dimitrescu (another new playable character) can’t block either.
The only other character in Mercenaries mode who can block is Heisenberg, and he does so by raising a literal wall of sheet metal. Intentionally or otherwise, Mercenaries does kinda seem to cast Ethan’s ability to substantially reduce damage just by holding up his arms as pretty unique.
Speaking of health, Leon and Ethan can both increase their maximum HP – Leon by using yellow herbs, Ethan by eating food cooked for him by the Duke. Ethan, however, can also decrease the damage he takes while blocking and increase his running speed this way. This is the sort of game mechanic it’s probably not worth thinking too hard about, but even so, the idea that mould-man Ethan can enhance his own powers by eating food from around the village where the mould originates (and specially prepared by the nigh-omniscient Duke himself) is something I raised already over in my post on Mia and Miranda – and it fits here too. Leon, meanwhile, can only increase his own durability by buying body armour, then paying even more to keep it repaired (there is a case charm that increases his speed a little too, but it’s bloody hard to get).
There are other little details that follow the same pattern too – whereas in RE8, I found myself mostly using the pistol to finish off any enemies who didn’t quite go down in one shotgun blast, in RE4, I found myself relying on my basic pistol a lot more, even when not going for kung-fu finishers. Mostly, that’s down to enemy speed and ammo availability, but you can’t argue it makes sense that the better-trained Leon would be better-equipped to get the job done with lower-calibre weaponry.
Now, to be clear, I doubt most of these little differences are down to the devs going “okay, this new game is about a mould-superman, how do we work that into gameplay?” when RE7 came out – and I’m pretty sure a lot of how the new RE4 plays is down to an earnest attempt to include as much of the old RE4 as still makes sense. Leon has a visible health bar and can supplex enemies into the dirt because people loved the original, and we’re not here to completely reinvent the best features of the wheel. Half the stuff that screams ludonarrative resonance to me is probably more happy accident as design.
But when, for example, you’re being irritated by the discovery that the only mines available to Leon will just go off on their own after 30 seconds if not triggered by an enemy, it’s nice to be able to tell yourself “bloody hell, guess you need a real engineer like Ethan to make a half-decent mine!” and treat that like an excuse. It doesn’t fundamentally change the way either game plays, but it feels like there’s some rhyme and reason to it, and that’s just a little bit more fun. And they’re both great combat systems in their own fun way.
YMMV, of course.

thoughts of ada x leon (no hate just my thoughts, okay?)
this won't probably be for everyone, i will flat out say it. i don't like ada and leon. i have been trying to convince myself that it's a good ship because the fandom's propaganda. (also considering I'm a new fan) many fans said to just read the lore and see how much they love each other.
it ruined it for me.
leon and ada need a completely reboot from their romance.
i have been replaying resident evil 2 (remake) and i just don't get it. I love these two characters so much but they are so intriguing. their romance has... a chance to survive, but... eh.
ada is such an interesting character that is just thrown to wolves. the thing is some people in tiktok get sensitive if i don't like the ship, but i want her. i want to know what drives her. i want to know every single detail about her that doesn't involve leon.
because bad people exist, they think the only possibility of not liking this ship is because you're jealous. jealous of what? i like Leon. he is a good character (that needs a bit more tweaking) and ada just needs to be properly focused but resident evil 4 kinda ruined them (in my opinion). i don't get them.
it seems like most of fandom doesn't really like her. they just seem like step children dealing that their dad married a woman they barely know. people barely speak about ada. all they mention is how she blue balls him, how she actually cares about leon, how she and leon have a child in death island... *sigh* that doesn't seem the point of her character!
but nothing of her.
not headcanons, no... actually love for the character... i feel so sad about it. it makes me feel kinda bitter than this woman who is a spy, whose really name isn't really ada wong- is only know for her love interest.
i hope i'm wrong about people only seeing her as leon's love interest. i really like ada. i actually do so much but... i don't like the ship. ada deserves to be separated from leon
ada is a like a second protagonist in re, she appears in three games, two movies (?), books, and yet... what is known? she is leon's pretty girlfriend. :(

tw: opinions.
sometimes i truly cannot stand videogame fandoms. the constant comparison towards the women is insane. i always find people arguing with me about ellie williams, ada wong and numerous others being ‘strong’ enough to beat lara croft in a fight.
first of all — all these women work completely different jobs. i don’t even know why ellie is being brought into the conversation, considering she hasn’t experienced anything like lara, and more so like ada, but not exactly. this brings in my first argument, really; she doesn’t share the same experiences considering she’s much younger than both lara and ada so let’s quickly draw her out of this!
second of all — regarding lara and ada. the reason i get into so many debates is because the people i’m talking to are usually hardcore aeon stans. which is fine, i’m not going to generalise, and really i couldn’t care less about who ships who. it’s just annoying, considering ada is heavily inspired by lara in many, many ways. lara is not just an archaeologist (you don’t see her digging up fossils and researching them. 🤦🏼♀️) she’s done many spy-like jobs like in tomb raider 7. i like ada, re4og ada is actually one of my favourite videogame characters, but definitely not the first. i don’t mean to say lara is better because my opinion wouldn’t apply to many people and another thing that irks me, these two brilliant women are from completely different videogames.
lastly, my actual thought on this debate? lara would win. i’m sorry, but let’s bring some facts into this. ada lacks upper body strength because she uses mainly grapple hooks and fireweapons, but this doesn’t mean to say she’s weak and can’t throw a good punch. it would just put her at a disadvantage, plus the heels she wears (which she rocks) but let’s be real for a moment here. ada is incredibly agile, she’s a fast runner and can think well in complicated situations similiar to leon which is an attribute i think they share, so her lower-body strength is really good. only problem is, she’d be versing a woman who literally has the best aerobic ability, both in the reboots and the classics. if you haven’t seen how high lara can jump, i suggest checking it out. she’s flexible, incredibly intelligent and sneaky, i can’t really give a comparison between the reboots and classics because she’s equally good in both.
another thing that puts ada at disadvantage, her arsenal. lara uses all sorts of fireweapons (rifles, launchers, sub machines, hand guns and etc.) , combat knives, archery gear, explosives, and of course, grapple hooks, climbing equipment— her hands and legs. in the resident evil four remake, ada wears that iconic sweater dress which tears quite easily in seperate ways, which also puts her at disadvantage as lara usually wears tactical gear that can protect her. her critical hit damage ranges from over 300% whereas ada’s (and leon’s and almost every other resident evil character) ranges from 25%. why? experience. she was born in 1968, which makes her older than ada in 2024.
so if some silly person were to ask me that immature question again, and actually wanted an honest answer; then yes, i do believe lara would beat ada, i do believe she would beat ellie and lots of others. even jill. but this is my opinion that’s based on facts that i’ve seen from playing the entire tomb raider triology.
but overall it’s a stupid thing to even discuss because it seems like i’m putting those women down. i’m not. they’re all strong in their own ways. if ada weren’t an anti-hero i believe she’d get along with lara, and it’s needless to say that ellie and lara would get along too, kind of in a claire and sherry way, and jill? honestly, i think they’d be best friends.
(by the way, i love leon so much, but he wouldn’t stand a chance against lara either. especially classic lara, who is practically op.)

Since that person said to ignore or block them for their post if there's disagreement, I will respect that and just make my own post.
Why is RE5 labelled racist and not RE4? Well, there's two things going on here. First, the original RE4 was kinda racist too. There's Ada Wong's depiction, the people in Spain weren't speaking Spain Spanish but Latin American Spanish and some of it was just gibberish. There's the "mexican yellow filter" layered on top of the village segment. Yet, the word we're actually looking for when it comes to the issues of Resident Evil 4 is xenophobia not racism. Everything is going under the cut because there's a lot here. Pardon for any typos, and there are links attached.
I genuinely think an RE5 Remake would be a reboot due to it's issues and the story direction changes RE4 Remake has made. If that helps get an idea of my thoughts before you click that button, you've been warned.
What's the difference? Let's look at the dictionary terms according to the merriam-webster dictionary.
Xenophoba- Fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign.
Racism- A belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
A further example of the difference here is a French white person can be xenophobic to a Polish white person showing that same hatred, but it's not racism because both parties still benefit from the privileges provided to them due to the color of their skin and lack of ethnic features.
So what's the difference between the RE4 and RE5 depictions, and why is RE5 labelled as racist? Starting with the setting, RE4 is set in Spain. It's not set in Mexico, or Brazil, or Cuba, but it is in Spain. Spain is a colonial power who colonized huge areas of South America. The reason there are so many english speakers in North America is the same reason there are so many spanish speakers in South America. Which is the brutalization and murder of the people and their cultures to force assimilation into another culture. Here is the Britannica article [X] and a list of a colonies Spain exerted control over if you scroll to the bottom [X].
Spain as a country and a culture have the same foot to stand on when it comes to being turned into mindless zombies and being killed as US Americans, British, French, Canadians and so on from a world perspective. There are very obvious classism themes going into play for this village Leon has stumbled into and proceeds to shoot his way through including how the houses are built and what the bridges are made from.
The most important distinction is that RE4 has villagers, soldiers, monsters, cultists, a man dressed as a priest, and another man cosplaying as a Spanish colonizer. You know what they don't have? They don't have enemies dressed up in luchador outfits, fiesta outfits, or wearing big sombreros. The only blonde woman they're seen trying to steal and infect is the character you have to save, get to know as a person, and get to play as in a game segment. Plus the person pulling all the strings is another white man looking for power like the Spanish did when they killed all those people historically speaking.
On the other hand, what colonizers did to the entire continent of Africa was so awful many labeled it The Rape of Africa. Historians later labeled it The Scramble for Africa, yet the history remains as bloody and grotesque regardless of the title.
Spain did have it's own tragedies, but you don't want to read all of that history junk. You want to know why RE5 is labelled racist specifically! It's just a video game. Sure there was the tribal costume for Sheva, but that's the worst of it. I mean RE5 is just RE4 with a setting change and with Chris instead of Leon, right? Yes and No. Let's list the similarities first and bleed into the differences.
Evil white guy seeks power and discovers a resource he can use to gain power. (Saddler with the plaga in amber, Wesker with the sonnentreppe flowers for Uroboros)
Heroic white guy comes on the scene based on a tip they received so they can find a particular woman. (Chris for Jill, Leon for Ashley)
Both groups that the player has to kill are infected with parasites.
Both protagonists deal with an infected population where the line between their humanity and inhumanity is questioned due to their ability to communicate and use tools to further their goals to kill and infect.
Both games have the player enter a village where it's clear the place isn't the richest and- wait a minute. Wait a minute!
The town we enter in RE5 is being occupied by the military on the hunt for terrorists. It looks like it used to be in pretty good shape, but based on the random plumes of smoke and what appears to be previously bombed rooftops, it's clear this place has been through some shit which can be based on the amount of damage these buildings have. The houses in the village in RE4 look as though they were falling apart due to age and negligence not outer forces. In RE5 we also keep seeing the imagery of killed livestock unlike in RE4 where the player is responsible for most dead livestock. So Plaga Type-1 can take care of their animals but Plaga Types 2 and 3 don't care? Well, that probably has nothing to do with the location.
Speaking of location, did anyone else notice whereas in RE4 the locations get more modern and/or expensive you can visibly see where the money has gone, but in RE5 the locations get more ancient and tribal themed until you have to deal with Wesker? Just me? Okay, back to the similarities.
Both the plaga amber and the sonnentreppe flowers have been there for hundreds of years, and the- hold on a second. Ramon's family was responsible for making sure the amber never got out. They sealed the place up because they knew it was dangerous. The sonnentreppe flowers were used by the Ndipaya tribe in West Africa to determine who would rule them and their king would then become super human. They fled when their empire fell, labeled it as sacred ground and sent men of their tribe as soldiers to guard it, and then later lost that sacred land to a corporate militia. Ramon opened up the amber caves to Saddler willingly after his parent's "mysterious death and disappearance." Hmm.
Ramon is a descendant of a famous colonizer. The Ndipaya tribe was doing some messed up eugenics tests as The Right of Kings, stopped doing that to turn the zone into holy ground, and then were removed from their own land by a foreign power. Hm. This is starting to sound familiar in a bad way.
Okay, but no one cares about that stuff! No one thinks that deep in the lore or set pieces. The people claiming racism are "blowing up" about RE5 when it comes to the visuals. All right. Let's talk about those because you are right! The visuals are the meat of the racism label.
Remember how I said RE4 doesn't have ganados running around in sombreros and luchador or fiesta outfits which would actually be racist? Let's look at the majini.
Both the ganados and the majini are being used by their specific higher ups, (Saddler's cult and Tricell) to act as a militia force in order to protect foreign interests. As a result both parties are hostile and murderous to outsiders.
Both games gives distinct costuming to differentiate stronger enemies. For RE4 you have Salvador, El Gigante, J.J. the gatling man isn't great imagery for Spain not going to lie. There's the bella sisters. The group that has the most distinct costuming due to them being bags are the cultists as the soliders just line up with Krauser's choice in wear.
Now the majini are- oh. Okay, gattling gun majini and gattling ganado cancel each other out. The rest though... Okay, Executioner is probably supposed to be like Salvador, but we get a chainsaw majini segment so the Executioner must be like the Bella Sisters? Okay, there are two of executioners so that's what we're going to claim. Big Man Majini? They didn't even give him shoes or a shirt. He's just in short pants. I can't think of a ganado comparison that would even this out. Giant maijini? Why do they have those masks on?!?! Why are they running around with rope loincloths?!!! Stop being so tall!!! Get down from there! Yeah but El Gigante was, no no, RE5 also gets their own El Gigante, the Giant Majini were a different enemy. Okay but the rest of the Ndipaya are supposed to be like the cultists and- hello? What do you mean there was a letter written by a dying child in that village that the surviving Ndipaya men put on the ceremonial outfits before they started their killing activity?
But the cultists also wore ceremonial outfits! Okay, but I don't think I need to explain the visual difference between wearing a long black dress versus putting on ceremonial clothing and body paint used only for special occasions. If you need a comparison, the cultists dressed that way to show dedication to their religion similar to nuns so they wore it everyday. The Ndipaya tribe wore normal clothes up until infection where they then dressed up in their special formal costumes so they could look more tribal for the section where the player gets to kill them all. That's not great. At all.
I think the overall reception for this game being labelled as racist or not racist has to do with people just wanting to enjoy the game and ignore the issues, and people talking about the issues in a way that isn't exactly concise. We know black people were on the development team according to an MTV interview with RE5 Producer Jun Takeuchi [X]. According to him, the team valued the opinions of their black members during development and were constantly checking with them.
We know many people writing articles trying to debunk the racism label were running to Glenn Bowman who is an anthropologist and Sue Clark who at the time was the head of the British Board of Film Classification wherein both parties stated the game was not racist. [X] But when it comes to Glenn's comments, it turns out he wasn't an expert on race relations at all. [X] I tried digging deeper into the source, but the blog post exposing videogamer.com is now gone. Yet, I can look up Glenn Bowman and see that he's a retired professor. A retired white professor who was an expert on international relations like in Palestine, Israel, and Yugoslavia. [X] Not race relations. So the fact that everyone was referencing these two people as sources for the game not being racist does concern me.
Look, RE4 dropped in 2005. The conversation about it's racial and xenophobic issues were held mostly between the small RE circles people managed to find and other people of color who played the game at the time of it's release. This is also if those circles even brought up the topic because it was such a game changer for the genre, the issues it had were an afterthought until later on.
RE5 dropped in 2009. Social media was just getting it's foot in the door outside of forums. The first black president had been in office for a year, and conversations about race were finally being brought back to the table in a way that wasn't immediately humorous or dismissive because "things had gotten better". The US cultural consensus during the 2000s was a situation where the middle class felt like everyone had a seat at the table when it came to discussions of race. That's one of the reasons why looking at that decade of films you'll see things about race that would never pass into a final script today. I mean Tropic Thunder came out in 2008, and the negative reception it received still didn't "blow up" as understood public knowledge until a couple years after the fact. Some black people thought it was a hilarious when it dropped, and those were the voices being highlighted.
When and why people are saying RE5 is racist is because like many things of the 2000s, there are concepts in there that have aged like milk. They are offensive, outdated, and based on negative stereotypes given to an entire continent of people and the people who are descendants of the slaves reaped from those countries.
Yet, the scene that people bring up the most in this game other than th Ndipaya tribe is the classic racist fear mongering image where we see a dark skinned black man violently yank a blonde white woman away from safety while she screams for help. Does this remind you of the "Mad Brute" poster by Harry R Hopps. Or "America’s desire — Europe’s fate" from the Fliegende Blätter. Or the assumed excuse a lot of black men got lynched for? I understand this town is supposed to be horrible and the majini the victims, but I have to ask why it was specifically a white woman with blonde hair instead of a black woman being yanked into that building while she screamed for help. That is such a strong visual decision to make in the middle of this town in an African country where we also see a black woman walking by carrying a basket on her head at the beginning of the game. So the black women are still here, but they're not even cast into the role of a throwaway victim in this game?
To answer why is RE5 racist and not RE4, I've said a lot here. If the story is set in Africa, of course Chris is going to be killing african zombies. That's what we're going to see. That's not the racist part when here are other zombies who are not visibly black in those crowds that mob the player. What is racist is seeing the racially charged tribal imagery to frame these victims of this tragedy as monsters. What we need to see in instead if we get a remake is a concentrated effort to focus on Tricell and Wesker and the last tendrils of Umbrella as the bad guys.
These are places being occupied by corporate interests, and people being experimented on and tortured for corporate profits. Yet we have a location where something sacred was not only thematically framed in a way that justifies the extinction of an ancient tribe, but their descendants are then punished for it through being lied to and tricked under the promise of receiving healthcare.
RE5 is racist not because a white guy is killing african zombies in an african country. RE5 is racist because it tries to take a story about colonialism and racism and the structural failings of the government and doesn't execute it well. And we know it doesn't because people are still having these conversations long after it's release despite it's financial success.

When I say I disliked (not hate, disliked) OG Ashley Graham, it’s not because she’s not Jill Valentine or Claire Redfield. It’s not because she’s kidnapped by a cult. And it’s not because she’s a woman. I also disliked OG Luis Serra and didn’t care about him at all, so it’s not a gender thing. Honestly, anyone who hates a character because of their gender do not have the best takes.
I don’t even despise OG Ashley because there are elements I do like about her. I like the fact that she can wear armor so that she’s not vulnerable to attacks. I may have sucked at the game at times, but I figured out ways to have her stand in an area away from danger or have her hide so that I don’t accidentally fail the mission or shoot her by mistake. Plus I was able to take advantage of the fact that the Ganados move so slowly and don’t actually dodge shooting attacks so that I am shooting them instead of Ashley. The shooting her by mistake one only happened in the Remake for me when I’m trying to save her from being kidnapped by a Ganado since I have the worst aim ever.
I also put myself in both versions of Ashley’s shoes, because she is a woman who was kidnapped, and that alone is a terrifying fear, and I would definitely be like Ashley in this situation. And she is one of the more unproblematic characters in the franchise (because there are certain characters in the CGI movies and in other RE games that are far worse than Ashley).
I disliked OG Ashley because she was a caricature of the damsel in distress character, her voice despite being voice by the same woman who was Sandy Cheeks was also irritating to listen to. I also hated that scene in the castle where she coughed up blood and when Leon was asking if she was alright, she responded by yelling at him to leave her alone and shoving him away and running right into a very obvious trap. Like I said, caricature of a damsel in distress.
The only element I hate about Ashley isn’t actually related to her character, rather it’s related to how the weird side of the RE fandom infantilizes her, which I’m sick and tired of seeing every time I want to see any kind of content related to her or the Leon x Ashley ship. She is TWENTY years old and in college. She is a whole ass woman. More importantly, she ain’t real.
And it’s not just OG Ashley I disliked. OG Luis is also someone I disliked because again, a caricature of a Spaniard and the generic mysterious man who we still didn’t get clear answers as to why he’s helping two strangers or why he’s even turning his back on Los Illuminados. Not to mention the stereotypical way he tries flirting with Ada Wong. His death was also pointless in the original, because I never cared about him nor did I feel sad.
Thankfully the remake changed these two. But I think that’s mainly because the Remake is a soft reboot of RE and that series is going in a different direction.
Do NOT get any of this post twisted. Ashley Graham and Luis Serra in the original RE4 are not characters that I actively hated.
The only RE Characters I actively do hate are Simmons, Glenn Arias, Carla Radames, That one senator guy from Degeneration who I’m not even going to bother looking up because he was annoying, and that one villain from Degeneration who I am also not going to bother looking up because he sucks.
TLDR: I dislike both Original Ashley and Original Luis because they were generic caricatures, that definitely benefitted the most from the remake, and Simmons, Arias, Carla, the Senator of Degeneration, and the Villain from Degeneration are characters I actually do hate.

There should be a flat reboot of the Resident Evil saga, no Alice, let's get Jill, or Leon and Claire, maybe a mix of the three, and let's get Mr. X and Albert Whesker into the mix, lil bit of Ada Wong in there, and get goofy with it. I want my Mr. X that can't go into safe rooms, i want my stupid idiot Malewife, I want the hottest woman on earth, fucking let us EAT

A New Resident Evil Movie is in the Works Again at Screen Gems
h Yet again, a New Resident Evil Movie is in Being Made; Maybe This Time They Can At least Get the Characters Right... Exciting (maybe?) news for all horror and gaming enthusiasts: a new Resident Evil movie is officially in the works, and it's looking to up the ante with a higher budget and new ambitions. Courtesy of a recent scoop by InsiderFandom, we've learned that Screen Gems, the studio behind the movie, is nearly done with the script and is gearing up for casting and filming. The latest installment appears to be a significant departure from the modestly budgeted 2021 movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which, despite its mixed reviews, managed to carve a successful path at the box office. Initially, Sony Pictures had allocated a limited budget for the film but stepped back, leading Constantin Film to seek external financial backing. This time around, Screen Gems is not only handling the production but also the distribution, hinting at a robust confidence in the upcoming project. The 2021 release, while financially successful, garnered an unremarkable 5.5 rating on IMDb, reflecting the mixed critical reception. It seems the filmmakers have taken the critiques to heart; insiders at Sony are hinting at a production scale and dedication akin to the much larger "Afterlife" project. This shift suggests a meticulous approach to budget planning, with an emphasis on not compromising the script's integrity amid financial strategies. Of course, setting a budget and scale like that of Resident Evil: Afterlife isn't good enough. As we've seen in the past: money isn't the problem. Directing, story and characters need to be spot on. Ultimately, the 2021 film did have some good aspects to it. One notable scene involved Chris walking through dark hallways of the mansion with zombies and flashes from his firearm. One bad aspect of the movie was how poorly they portrayed Leon. Is the New Resident Evil Movie a Sequel, Reboot Or Something Else? The storyline for the new movie remains tightly under wraps, sparking a whirlwind of speculation among fans. Will this film serve as a reboot, or will it continue the narrative left by "Welcome to Raccoon City"? The previous film, noted for blending elements from RE1, 2 and 3 (which was probably one of its biggest problems), left several plot threads hanging—particularly those involving the enigmatic Umbrella Corporation and characters like Ada Wong, whose story teased just beyond the credits, remains unresolved. The potential return of Albert Wesker also looms over the franchise, posing questions eager fans are desperate to have answered. Director Johannes Roberts, anticipated to return for this next chapter, is expected to tackle these unresolved mysteries, potentially providing the closure that has eluded fans thus far. While the full details on casting and specific plot points are still under lock and key, anticipation is undoubtedly building for the new Resident Evil movie. Stay tuned for further updates as we keep a close eye on developments. Capcom and Screen Gems seems poised to breathe new life into the Resident Evil saga, potentially redefining it for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. With a higher budget and a promise of greater scale, the next chapter in the Resident Evil series might just be what the doctor ordered for horror aficionados craving that mix of adrenaline and nostalgia. However, maybe Capcom can have a little more control over this new Resident Evil movie. Try and reel this one in a little bit this time, okay Capcom? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or start a new topic in the new and improved forums. Read the full article
