overall, it's not so much that i "ignore" canon pre-s5 (whereas s5 is altogether ignored, hah). it's more that i occasionally take issue with the execution of points canon tries to make. cheers was a smart and game-changing sitcom for how it pushed the envelope of the genre's limitations, but that doesn't mean it is not of its time in places, of course. there is the predictable content that i purposefully update/rewrite.

switching the parenthetical (<3) up from pre-s5 and looking at the post-diane years: i've been thinking a lot about my beloved "diane stayed" (reductive/misnomer-ish) aus/sam diane fix-its lately, where diane and rebecca would have co-existed, and something i do not think holds a drop of water is the notion that they wouldn't have seen sibling struggles in each other (women feeling underappreciated/underrecognized in their respective spheres/pursuits) and would not have formed some kind of tentative friendship, in keeping with the relationships we tend to see on the show

i hate how in the s11/show finale when diane comes back, she and rebecca dislike each other. there wasn't much effort, but uh, it was the. s11. finale. lol.

even Less so because the thing they're apparently mad about is that the nonbinary alien rock was supposed to be a lesbian (as if there's anything wrong with a nonbinary alien rock being bisexual, Or that lesbian can't have a situationship with a man without still being a lesbian on the other side.)

anyways, may take on it is: you don't have to consider any of rebecca sugar's sketches "canon," because it's not actually in the source material. rebecca may have a strong influence on how the fandom sees the characters but it does Not actually change the show. so getting worked up about it in the first place is ridiculous.

i don't understand the hate tedbecca gets. shipping the main characters of a show who are confirmed to be soulmates shouldn't be controversial or weird, even if you don't like the fandom. as for the platonic argument: you should be friends with/like the person you're in a relationship with??? it's so strange to me.

WIP because i am first-aid-kiting everyone and the relationships between them in this show through my gigantic coexistence alt. universe

i wasn't going to post about this playlist until i had wrought it into a more cohesive shape like my other cheers playlists which i take too seriously, but i just added talking heads' 'burning down the house' to rebecca's and immediately facepalmed at myself. it works.

the important piece: diane and rebecca would have been friends, we just had to re/fan-cast rebecca. it'd also be remiss to avow interest in cheers' interrogations into class and gloss over the rebecca years for how they commented on corporatization of mom-and-pop, as in, corrupt white-collar professionals & their capitalistic ventures, seeking to divest power from blue-collar, small businesses, etc. and how rebecca was embroiled in that by internalizing the #American fallacy that capitalism = the way to gain recognition/value/power...... i'll fix her i'll fix everyone
