happy 10th anniversary to spider-man: turn off the dark!
i don’t make my own posts on here often but it’s one of my all time favourite musicals and it genuinely brings me so much joy and even though most people hate it, i’m gonna love it like no one else and it means so much to me even if it seems corny as hell to everyone else.
the show got a lot of criticism and a lot of people genuinely wanted to see it fail but the cast and crew cared so much and put in so much effort, every performance was genuine and they wanted it to be good and it shows even in the crappy bootlegs. i can’t remember where i saw he said this but whenever i think of the bad criticism and all that, i always think of reeve carney saying that he ignored all that and thought instead about the young kids in the audience who were gonna get to see spidey fly over them and how he wanted to put on a good show for them and i think that’s incredibly special and encapsulates how much they all cared.
and if they didn’t care, if there wasn’t genuine joy and love for this show, then a loser like me wouldn’t be here loving it still, the songs continue to get me through rough times, the characters mean so much to me, yeah it’s silly and it’s probably a mess but it has HEART and LOVE and that means everything to me and i’ll take that over something soulless any day.
so happy 10 years to totd, thanks for existing and helping me to rise above 🥺💝

A year ago, I stood on the corner of 52nd St. and 8th Ave., waiting to go inside for a free first preview of a new Broadway show. I generally prefer to wait until a show officially opens, partly so I can judge a final product, but mostly because a former friend attends early previews and I go out of my way to avoid her. But who can say no to free theatre tickets? (If she was there that night, I didn't see her, so crisis averted.) As always, I was excited to see a new show, but I had some concerns. Did we really need another adaptation of a movie, especially one so beloved by many? I had only seen the movie once, but I still knew it was iconic and completely understood why. Would it live up to the original source material, or would it be as offensively bad as some other adaptations I won't publicly name? I remained cautiously optimistic and eager to find out.
The opening number set the scene with just the right amount of exposition, and the following number was making me laugh, until all of a sudden they had to stop the show. Understandable. It was a first preview, and I figured they were still working some technical kinks out. Then forty-five minutes passed and free drinks were offered. I even considered not waiting at the stage door. At this point, I would already get home late, and I had to be up early for work the following day. The composer, book writer, and director got up on stage and reassured their audience that this never happened in rehearsals. They told us that despite the turntable refusing to cooperate, they would resume the first act concert-style, and then perform five songs from the second act. They also said they would give us all vouchers to come back to a later preview so we could see it the way they wanted us to. The actors had to sit in chairs and couldn't change out of their costumes, but they still gave it their all. Their ability to laugh through the stress and perform as if they were using the full set and choreography blew my mind. I think, "There you are" got the biggest laugh of the night, since all someone did was get up out of a chair. When the lead actor burst into laughter, I knew I was going to wait and congratulate everyone. It would be worth being tired the next day. When I went back a few weeks later, there was another technical stop, but this time it only lasted ten minutes. And I got to see/hear half of one of my favorite songs in the show twice. Still the best car chase I've ever seen, and probably ever will see.
Four months went by before I would see it again, but in that time I listened to the cast recording constantly and memorized the score. It was the show I recommended to friends without hesitation. I even sang the act two opener in acting class with the "Hope" (see what I did there?) that it would encourage people to buy tickets. But it wasn't enough. A week and a half after my third trip to Punxsutawney, the show posted its closing notice, and it hurt way more than I was expecting it to. I went back a lot during its final month, made friends both on the Internet and in real life, and cried with them through the final performance. I managed to see it eight times during its six-month-and-one-day run, and I wish I could have gone more.
This beautiful gem of a show deserved to run as long as Phil was stuck in that time loop. No. It deserved to run even longer than that. The care and detail that team put into every line, every movement, every...everything...continues to amaze me. It's been gone six months (minus one day) now, and I'm still picking up on new details when I listen to it or when my mind happens to wander back to its time on Broadway. A tragedy occurred in Barcelona, and the next day, they changed a line from, "It always makes me think of Barcelona" to, "It always makes me think of Machu Picchu." Something a certain other show I won't publicly name could have learned from. I'm not bitter. It enhanced the original source material, and cast a large, diverse group of kind people who deserve nothing but happiness and success. I will never stop missing it, but I'm forever grateful for the time we had together, even if it was cut far too short.
Revive Groundhog Day.

beccafaulken BILL F'ING MURRAY CAME TO @groundhogdaybwy AND LOVED IT!!! When someone has created such an iconic film, and they come to see it reinvented - you never know what to expect, you're just hoping that they like it. Well, he adored it. He held court with our cast for a long time afterwards, talking about how important and meaningful the story of our show is, the community we're creating onstage. The more we connect, the more the audience will feel it. He was not shy about announcing he was giving us notes too :-) AND to top it off, at the end of #playingnancy last night, there was an audible WOW, which made me giggle (inside of course:-) because if you've seen the show, that's one of Nancy's favorite words... and then to read in the NYtimes it came from the man himself (thanks @abbydephilips for the 📷) - pretty cool. So glad the Original was in attendance and we got to meet him, and his wonderful brother Brian (who played buster in the film) was there too, AND the man whom none of this would be possible without - @dannyroohoohoo . Yay for #Broadway , it can be pretty #magical sometimes. #moviemusicals #proudlynancy#notesfrombill #wow #hefinallycame !!! #comeseeourshow #billmurraylikedit#WhatWouldBillDo

My trip to New York was SURREAL. The only downside was the environment and the fact that I have to walk around all day, especially the bus ride back to Massachusetts. Anyways, the great highlights of this trip were the two amazing musicals I saw, two nights in a row- Groundhog Day and Miss Saigon.
Details under the cut.
July 31, I saw Groundhog Day. This is the first performance of Taylor Iman Jones, the understudy for Rita. AND SHE WAS PHENOMENAL. Andy Karl also blew the roof and I can clearly know why he won Best Actor in the 2017 Olivier Awards.
The ensemble was amazing, they manage to perfectly repeat their choreography each “day”, and their voices harmonize so beautifully. They more than deserve being the Olivier’s Best Musical. The car chase during “Nobody Cares” and the entirety of “Hope” had amazing choreography. Heck, this entire musical was choreographed so well. Adrenaline continued to flow when my mom told me we could go to stage door and boy, I was nervous. As I stood near the poles (?), anxiety blew through the roof all the while people beside me continued to talk while waiting. Taylor, Andy, Rebecca Faulkenberry, Rheaume Crenshaw… I believe a few other amazing people signed my playbill. It was amazing to be right near them as they came out of stage door. Even better, I was able to take a picture with Andy and Taylor! Words alone cannot describe the feeling of even remembering this experience.
The night of August 1, seeing Miss Saigon was basically a treat for my mom since she also wanted to watch this. IT WAS AMAZING Eva Noblezada and Rachel Ann Go’s voices were so full of emotion I got chills. Jon Jon Briones was amazing and energetic as the Engineer. Nicholas Christopher nailed singing the Act 2 opener “Bui Doi”, I can only imagine how he did the previous role of George Washington in Hamilton.
The helicopter scene during “Kim’s Nightmare” was breathtaking, they made it so you can feel the wind on your face, and the embassy gates were so wide they reached the whole stage, if was amazing how they quickly moved and assembled it.
In stage door, the amazing people I mentioned, including Chris’s amazing understudy, Graham Scott Fleming and Devin Ilaw (Thuy), signed my playbill. I was able to get a picture with him, Rachel and Eva. The kid who played Tam, Jace Chen, was so adorable. Even as gunshots are played onstage, he continues to stand. He signed the playbills of a few other people and playfully air-punched Jon Jon Briones.
These two musicals are amazing, and I would watch them again and again if given the chance.
