The Six Wives of Henry VIII from least to most favorite (as voted by you guys)
3RD PLACE - Anne of Cleves
“It says a great deal for Anne of Cleves that she managed to settle into her position with dignity. Many people liked her and admired her courage and common sense, and the common people were impressed with what they had seen and heard of her. On 11 January, she attended a tournament held in honour of her marriage, and for the first time appeared dressed in English costume, with a French hood that everyone agreed much became her. Yet her efforts to please had little effect upon her husband.” - Alison Weir, The Six Wives of Henry VIII

House of La Marck: Amalia of Cleves
Amalia was born as the youngest daughter and child of Duke Johann III of Cleves and his wife Maria, the heiress of the duchies of Jülich and Berg. Amalia’s older siblings were Electress Sibylle of Saxony, Queen Anne of England and Duke Wilhelm V of Jülich-Cleves-Berg.
For the first years, the siblings all spent their time together under the care of their mother. When Wilhelm was sent off to be educated to become a duke, the sisters remained with their mother. They only received a very limited education for their time. The Cleves sisters learned household skills like needlework and cooking to become good wives but not how to play any instruments. Despite that Amalia was interested in poetry and music throughout her life. Unlike at most courts in Europe at the time, the Cleve court did not allow the fashionable Italian fashion of the time.
When the infamous Henry VIII of England was searching for his fourth bride the two youngest Cleves daughters were considered: Anna and Amalia. Hans Hohlbein painted portraits of the both of them. In the end, Anna, better known as Anne, was chosen. Most likely because her claims to the duchy were better than Amalia’s.
In the following years, there were attempts to marry Amalia off for as much profit as possible. One of the longest running negotiations was with The Margrave of Baden who had two sons. Bernard, whose immoral behaviour actually got him banished from the Baden court and was only allowed to come back after his sisters pleaded with their father, and Karl, who was twelve years younger than Amalia. Amalia’s brother Wilhelm refused them both as possible husbands for his youngest sister.
Amalia stayed unmarried for her entire life. She lived at her brother’s court and became the governess to his daughters. While his sons were raised Catholic, his daughter raised as Protestants by their aunt because she refused to see them adhere to Catholicism. Allegedly, at one point in time, Wilhelm became to angry at his little sister for her devotion to the Protestant faith that he drew a sword and chased after her until he was stopped by a servant.
In her free time, Amalia enjoyed poetry and music. A song book she wrote herself can still be found in its original form in the German national library in Berlin. Two copies of it exist in Frankfurt. When her sister Anna died, she inherited a diamond ring from her.
Amalia died on March 1st, 1586, at the age of 68 in Düsseldorf. She survived both her sisters Sibylle and Anna but all of them were outlived by their brother.
