Hung in My Heart || Accepting
"Uhuh. I know. Ya flash ya badge a' me six mont' ago, remembah? Now, my question f' you Marshal, you gonna flash me some kine else?" The slow grin that flickers across her lips with a hint of teeth, belies the otherwise innocent expression on her face. She can explain the money. She can explain the shovel in her hands, and she can even explain the reason why she'd been seen around a questionable sort of establishment known to a specific sort of trade. All he has to do is ask the right questions. What she cannot explain, however, is why wants to drag him up into the hills and see if all he keeps on is the hat.
~*~
"Now Raylan, you know I have always loved you like a brother-" "Right-" he interrupts, having been the witness to this sort of beginning more times than he can count, and it never goes well. "But I have to ask you how wise it seems to make Daddy an' Arlo lose their minds over a little bit of skirt who is more trouble than she's worth? I have the fear of God almighty in me every time she flashes those pretty brown-" "They're green, actually. Just got brown bits in 'em." "And thus he was lost to perdition, walking out amongst heathens." "Boyd?" "Yeah?" "Shut up." ~*~
His head turns whip-crack fast, and for a moment, she has to wonder what about the river had held his focus so deeply that she was nearly upon him before he took note. The truth of it likely ran somewhere between the Widow's claim or blood on the rocks and perhaps he knew she was there all along, and did not find her to be a threat. Being so far away from the camp, Rebecca suspects the later. A better question is why she followed him here. She smiles at him, and makes her way just a little further down the bank. A flash of her skirts and she's starting to unbutton her boots. "Back East," she says, and never uses the word home for it, "there was a little pond behind a copse of trees. It was my favourite place. I would like to imagine you had somewhere like that, too, Mr Bullock. Somewhere to escape your woes." ~*~
The darkly garbed woman doesn't bother to lower the cowl-hood as she takes the seat opposite of Vanth. Everything about him grates on her last nerve like the sand that comprises this dead world and its twin suns. It's coarse and rough and it gets everywhere. She could say that now with experience of most things on Tatooine. "A word. A look. Any sort of thing, and I will murder you where you sit." And with that dire warning which might now pass for greeting between them, graceful black gloved fingers pluck the glass from between his and she knocks it back in a single gulp. "Pour."

have you been listening to any music these days?
morning anonymous;

yes, no; it:s a frequent sin and frequent failing despite my means and intent to live as free from abstraction and pollutants as i can--say, it creeps in at church through the hymnals, and sometimes through myself when i get nervous about talking to someone and need to warm up my voice by singing lyrics to negativeXP or hardchrist that i remember, or through backing tracks of videos on tiktok or youtube or even audiobook sometimes (Doctor Sleep is mostly unaccompanied but the start of each file has a spooky interlude)--during hurricane Milton though and realizing how boring everything was, i started listening to Longmont Potion Castle albums & sometimes he has those interludes he does which count as music, and more-than that it separated out for me two problems: games are completely boring to me if i can:t also listen to someone talk (like a podcast; feel like this points at loneliness) and that i get sick at the idea of listening to something if i can:t also do something 'stimulating' (it is hard to listen to an audiobook while driving, but also while doing absolutely nothing); after Milton i thought i:d be more productive if i had music to write to, so i started listening to some of the the silent hill 1~2 albums to write; then: i pray like an idiot over my sin, and just-so know i likely will continue to sin and have want to listen to Gezebelle and negativeXP and billy cobb halloween IV & V; there:s an evil inside music, of connection; of nerves; of emotion; in silences more total it is easier to be rid of the evil and for connection to thin, but the nerves are always inflamed to connect, and operators work at the skull to graft new nerves to control; to connect; and keep within life; to engage with this world at all, and any within it, fills the head with poison, and my head has been burning with poison and has made me sick; death begets me and i will be clean, but i keep cherishing poison, and want to sing negativeXP, gezebelle gaburgably;
Doctor Sleep is really fantastic, though--hated The Shining and the last King I finished was The Talisman which was total water and really wanted something that wasn't the next chronological King book (thinking that I really disfavor the younger King to the older King) since the next few were either Thinner (hate most of the Bachman books) or Eyes of the Dragon (sounded like another isekai like The Talisman); I wanted to do Let The Right One In by Lindqvist or Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons but the torrents were dead; Doctor Sleep I had heard was a vampire story (I wanted a vampire story) and I remember seeing the trailer for the movie and thinking it looked cool/stupid;
Rebecca by Daphne de [something, I forget her name] is really fantastic, though; I hated the first two chapters but ~224 pages in and I just want to read and read; I started The Red Tree by Caitlin Kiernan too, and that's fun but I went back to Rebecca and started reading a Simone Weil book I found at a local store while gifting some bonbons to the sandwich shop people at Mt Dora; take care.

Writing Patterns Game Tag
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Thiefed from @captainkappa
1. The man standing in front of Cobb’s table wearing a too small canvas vest labeled Duck Sitter’ was definitely, absolutely not a duck sitter. (Decoys)
2. It takes twenty minutes to unload the starfighter. (build it together)
3. “Are you fucking kidding me?” (seasons change when I just give it time)
4. Cobb should’ve said something as soon as Din suggested it. (Skating Lessons)
5. “And it’s just a guest spot,” Keeley said as she tucked her feet up under her on Rebecca’s office couch, “but they were always really supportive when I modeled and didn’t once print outtakes from that one shoot where I tripped into the koi pond, so I thought it might be fun.” (Dear Fancy Friend)
6. Patrick regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth. (Cocoa)
7. “What’s the point of this again?” Din asked, shifting out of the way of a gaggle of children running by him. (A Fair Bet)
8. Cobb Vanth still wasn’t quite sure how this Mandalorian made it to Mos Pelgo. (how it feels when we fall, when we fold)
9. The first time Loki met the Doctor, she’d been on the run for eight days. (the good ones always seem to break)
10. “We could always just...not go,” Steve pointed out from the corner of the bed where he sat watching Peggy meticulously get ready for the day. (Foolish)
More often than not, I’ll start in the middle of a conversation. I actually didn’t realize I did it so often until right now lol. Seriously, 8/10 of these are in the middle of a conversation. Apparently that’s my comfort zone.
If you read this far, consider yourself tagged!

Dorothy Jean Conrad, BJU Class of 1949.
Dorothy Jean (Cobb) Conrad went to her heavenly home on August 13, 2024, following a brief illness. She was born January 4, 1928, the oldest of two daughters born to Charles and Vera Cobb in Sebring, Florida. The family lived on South Ridgewood Drive and Jean attended Sebring elementary and high schools. She graduated as valedictorian of her class of 44 seniors. She later attended Bob Jones University where she met and married Earl C. Conrad from Lyons, Ohio in 1949.
Jean and Earl served with The Evangelical Alliance Mission in India for 37 ½ years, having arrived there in February 1952. Jean learned the Marathi language along with her husband. They lived much of the time in villages, where she taught children’s and women’s Bible classes, along with having and caring for 4 children of her own. Later in their service, they moved to the city of Pune and worked with Word of Life Publications. There Jean became adept at reading book proofs in Marathi. She also wrote her own book of object lessons for Sunday School teachers. They retired in November 1989 and returned to Sebring where they were active in Covenant Presbyterian Church and drove for Meals on Wheels for 27 years.
She is survived by her children: Rebecca (Leroy) Nicholson, Robert (Jenny) Conrad, Deborah(Robert) Brooks, Rachel Conrad; 9 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Brief graveside service at Pinecrest Cemetery, 10 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Ridge Haven Conference Center, 215 Ridge Haven Rd, Brevard, NC 28712 or Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4500 Sun 'N Lake Blvd, Sebring, FL 33872.
