Even though just looking through a window wasn’t very suspicious — after all, elves were nosy by nature — it was the look in their eyes that made you feel like something wasn’t right. It wasn’t of concern or fear, no. It was something darker, something that made your stomach twist up in knots, even if you had only seen it for a few seconds.

You had to tell Cherry.

Luckily, she had finished talking to the medic long ago, and was paying a visit to the now lucid Niamh, who had been put in a nearby hospital cot.

“…couldn’d be more embarrassed,” he was saying, leaning back against the pillow. “And you had to carry be here like a child…”

Cherry frowned. “You had a fever of one hundred and four! Like Medic Ingrid said, if you could walk, you wouldn’t make it very far.”

“The horrible things I said…” Niamh continued, not listening. “If I would have kndown the scale of this ebidemic, I would have - hhhh’KTCH’IEW!”

“Bless you! And you had no idea, Niamh. None of us did. But we’re going to figure it out. You just focus on getting better, okay? You are on strict bed rest.”

“Snf…okgay. Just…don’d do anything rash…”

“Come on, when have I ever…okay, fine, I get it. You don’t have to give me that look. Oh, good, you’re back.”

Cherry turned her attention to you.

“I was trying to think of what to do next. We’re…kind of at a dead end.”

You tell her what you saw in the window, and that you had a really bad feeling. Cherry fidgeted with the buttons of her overalls.

“Really short elf with big ears…I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone at the workshop like that. Have you, Niamh?”

Niamh’s eyebrows furrowed, and he tilted his head.

“I thingk…but didn’d they…hm.”

“What?”

“There was an employee here thad fits that description,” Niamh said. “Although, it was sobe tibe ago, and for a short time. If only I had by filing cabinet…”

Niamh cringed, massaging his temples.

“And not such a pounding headache…”

Cherry patted his arm. “It’s okay, just give us the short version. Then you can get some well-deserved rest.”

Cherry’s touch seemed to calm Niamh, and he shuffled deeper into the pillow, yawning.

“They were in the wrabbing division, I believe. Size 4 shoe, size XXS uniform. If I rebeber correctly, they were removed frob the system after a month of no call, no show. Bost likely just quitting without a two-week notice.”

Niamh yawned again, and he closed his eyes.

“Though they were a mbodel worker…very probising…quide a shame…”

With that, he turned over, beginning to snore.

“It’s good to see him so relaxed,” Cherry said with a tired smile. “He’s always so uptight, especially around the holidays. Hopefully we can get this figured out for him. And everyone else, of course.”

She turned to you.

“At least now we kind of have a lead. Well, more than we did before. All we have to do is take it in the right direction…”

You and Cherry both thought for a while.

Chapter 3: Bale or Bust

Cam narrowed their watery eyes.

“You don’d dow a thing aboud reindeer, do ya? When their antsy lige this, o-one loud doise’ll…hih-!”

Their nose twitched beneath their gloves, and they folded in on themselves, bracing for impact. But, no matter how much they snuffled and sniffled and sighed, Cam stayed between the final hitch and yet another sneeze.

“Maybe your nose could use a break,” Cherry said, now petting the doe’s muzzle. “Better out than in, as my grandpa used to say.”

Cam lifted their hand, beginning to protest, but they could barely get a word out.

“B-But…Aurorhah-!”

“I’ll take her out in the field,” Cherry said firmly, “so you can let a few sneezes out. She seems to have calmed down a little, anyway.”

She clicked her tongue.

“C’mon, girl! Here!”

Aurora lumbered forward, and with a shake of her tail, she followed Cherry out of the stable door. Cam was still trying to argue, but a few explosive stifles kept them at bay.

“Don’d - hhh’KKKSH! I’b n-not - hhhh’KCHHNX!”

You tell them that they don’t have to keep their sneezes back anymore, since Aurora is out in the field.

“I don’ rebeber askin’ you,” Cam said, sounding more defeated than angry. “Don’ think ‘cause Cherry’s takin’ the heat for you thad you’re off the h-hook. As sood as this whole tour is over, you’re leavin’.”

Cam’s defensive answer piques your interest. In fact, your interest has been piqued since you met them. Something about their unwillingness to be completely truthful, to give in to their most basic desires…

You ask them if they need help sneezing.

The question leaves your mouth before you can even fully process it. Your face begins to burn.

Cam’s expression shifts from annoyance to surprise, then a knit-browed confusion. However, they recovered quickly.

“I thingk you’ve heh-helped enough. ‘Sides, if there’s one thing I dow how to do, it’s sdeeh…sdeeh-!”

Cam turns away from you, struggling with the sneeze. They huffed between their two clasped hands in front of their nose and mouth, building to a sneeze that, despite their best efforts, would not come.

“H-Heh…snf-! Heh…HAH-! …Snf!”

Even under the gloves, you can imagine their red nostrils, chapped and rubbed raw from the constant stifling, begging to sneeze…

But, as much as you’re enjoying the show, you still don’t want to see the reindeer wrangler suffer, even if they don’t exactly want your help.

You try to think of a way to assist.

Alex wasn’t trying to cause a fight; he wasn’t trying to cross lines. He was trying to help both of us be honest with ourselves. Alex left; he grappled with the decisions he made. He tried to make sense of the human he was. He felt stuck he felt trapped against a wall when it came to finding out he was a dad, and iZzie kept his kids from him. For years; while he tried to make a family, a home here with Jo. And don’t get him wrong jo was his home. She always was. But he had twins; he had children out there; and he never wanted to become his dad. The deadbeat; the man who abandoned his kids. 

And Jo was Seattle; she made a home here; Alex couldn’t be selfish with her. But he also knows his heart was hers; she was the anchor for him. But we were over; I once said if I saw her again, if I looked her in the eye I’d never be able to walk away. And I believed in; until we crossed an impasse. She was a mother to a baby Parker; and I had kids in Kansas; as much as I felt we loved each other our courses wouldn’t match up. Impossible. I’d hold Jo’s heart her undevoted love in the palms of my hands; and I’d hope we could be friends. I never wanted to experience a future where she wasn't a part of me. 

But as I asked the daring question; what had changed? Did Jo care? Or was she counting down the minutes until I was gone. Until that damn accident; the loss of feeling in my legs was a reminder; of Jackson’s damn plane, his pathic plane of a jet. I was grumpy as I came to hear her, and I felt it the crushing of my chest as if it was impaled. “ Jo..” I started as I used every strength I had; to extend my hand to reach her own, fingers curled around the edge of her fingertips. “ Jo.. I could never ask you to give up your life here. And if it wasn’t for my battle with Izzie with wanting rights to my children I’d be here. But my hands are tied for right now. I know it would be easier to leave, to never look back. But it’s us, I loved you, I do love you. It was never about who I loved more. If it was just about my wife, I’d always chose you. But its about my kids not me.” Not what my heart craved, what I felt in my chest. The thought of never seeing jo again. It was about the twins what I had to sacrifice for them. But I knew if Jo was hurt I’d waste no time in sitting at her bedside; in being an anchor the home she’d always be for me. 

“ I want to let you go, for you. But I don’t know if it’s the right thing, Can’t we just not say goodbye until my rebeb is over?” The were weeks of healing; of getting my strength back; of trying to walk again. Then we revisit and figure out what was right and wrong. I felt pain in my chest; the ache that never left, but I also felt no limbs and movement in my nerves; an awful sign. But for Jo if she told me no, I’d let her go if for the last time.

Accidents; they have a way of whipping us into shape. Alex could tell you the amount of times he’s tended to patients from car wrecks, from plane crashes, and trains where it was two people who either were denying how they felt about each other. Or had broken up and one risk of never seeing the other again was a motivation. A motivation to admit to what rested in your heart. Alex knew he was the guy who made mistakes. He had a tenacity to lose his temper, he liked to believe he was an okay guy. But he also knew when it came to people he loved; he fought tooth and nail for. Jo she was the love of his life; he knew it in his heart. But he also felt his back against a wall. 

He had a family that had nothing to do with her; and this crash happened because he was again walking away from what rested in his heart. He had to ask himself if this was a sign. If this crash was an indication that he should be here in Seattle. Alex told himself he’d be damned if he walked away from her; because the second he laid his eyes on her again he knew. He was still hopelessly in love with her. But Jo she had a child; he had two kids in Kansas the odds did feel like they were stacked against him. He didn’t want to hurt her; again. And he saw Jo; he read her face like a book. She was barely holding it together. He hated himself for being the reason why she cried, why she had to walk away from him. 

He knew he was bleeding; it was awful because right now he could barely feel the movement in his legs, like his nerves had stopped functioning. But he saw it as a good sign that his eyes were opened, that he was alert. Because the doctor in him was assessing his own injuries. The bump on the head; the headache he felt each time he attempted to turn his head on his own. The worse part was the droplets of blood coming out of his leg. He saw the concerned expressions on Hunt and Bailey. Surgeon; he knew his life was in good hands. But given that Jo was the one on his side; she was the one that earned the job of distracting him, he had to use this opportunity for himself. Her lame joke; between baby vomit and cat; neither were quite the win if you asked him. 

Holding his lips together; he attempted to stop himself from laughing. A gentle small hint of a smile pulled at the corners of his lips. “ You need better stories Jo.” A light handed insult; but if he by some miracle survived and we tried to figure this unconventional relationship out; I needed to trust Jo would be able to make up a story at the beat of a bat. I made up stories all the time on a whim for my kids; the bedtime stories were our routines, the memory of the last time; I saw them. A few years to get to know Eli and Alexis, and now my life was flashing before my eyes. But not without saying the words; uttering the I love you; because if I was on my death bed, I needed Jo to know. It was always her; it would always be her. 

Hand laced through her; a slight tightest wrapped around her smaller palm. She loved me, now Jo could just be saying the words; so I wouldn’t feel like I was baring my soul out to her; but I didn’t want to hear the words; I needed to say it as my last words. Eyes slightly grew wide when I felt it; her lips on mine. As if no time had passed. Eyes shifted closed for a second. To hold onto this moment; the moment of kissing her again. It ended too soon if you asked me. 

“ Promise you won’t go anywhere.” I’d be back; I wasn’t going to let our story end like this. I heard Hunt; which is why My eyes were only focused on Jo; she was a calmness within this storm. Each movement of the gurney inching closer to the OR, I knew it was close when Hunt eyed both Jo and I. Her hand; I had brought her palm to my lips; pressing a gentle kiss to her skin. 

“ This isn’t over. It’ll be us at the end okay.” A promise; written in my words, I’d come back to her; I swore it with everything I had. Slowly I let go of her hand; As I nodded to Hunt. It was time to stop the damn bleeding. It was time to get this show on the road. Eyes fluttered shut as we made our way right into the OR. A minute before I felt the nurses start talking. 

“ We’re going to inject you so you don’t feel the pain, if the doctors want to repair your leg, and the wounds on your head.” I didn’t need to nod; my blood was dropping; I felt it in my body. I made a promise and I knew Jo; she’d hold me to the promise. Eyes opened looking right at the ceiling. Eyes glued to the white ceiling as I felt the injection to my arm; it was numb before I felt the mask lower down onto my face. 

The last image I saw was Hunt and Bailey who came to stand on each side of the table. “ We’ve got you Karev.” If I’d bet on any pair of hands it was theirs as eyes fluttered shut drawing me to darkness.
