It was rare to see snake hybrids. A lot of them hid in fear of how others treated them. Humans were mean creatures, especially to things they fear. They knew that all too well, so seeing a snake hybrid brought into your adoption center was strange. His scales were flakey, eyes stuck with shed. You could tell whoever had him didnât treat him well.
No one wanted to be near him most of your colleagues staying away some even squealing. However you werenât scared, did you like snakes? Not particularly, but you knew he needed help. When you approached him in the little container he was in he hissed. You quickly shushed him picking him up to take him to the sink area. You had run him a small bath, just some water for him to soak in. âI canât believe youâre touching that thingâ someone streaked at your side.
âIt deserves the same amount of love and compassion as any others hereâ you retort looking down at him. You cleaned him up helping the stuck shed off before putting him back with a heating lamp.
âY/n will you take it home?â Your manager had asked.
âWhy donât you want it here?â You glared.
âListen, most of us donât like them. Heâs probably not gonna get adopted and we also arenât equipped to take care of him properly. You at least seem to know what youâre doing.â They rambled.
You looked back down at the snake who was now curled up by your hand. âFine, Iâll take it home, however.â You said with a small pause. âHeâs mine as soon as we leave and I want the next few days off to take care of him and help him settle.â You stated.
âOf course-â your manager started to say before you interrupted him.
âPaidâ you said sternly.
With a sigh knowing he wasnât gonna win he agreed just wanting that thing out of the building.
You put him in your spare room, getting the necessary stuff for his set up. You watched as he explored smiling to yourself. âListen, I know you understand me. So whenever if ever you wanna become human. This room is yours. You have free roam where ever. Youâll be safe here, and taken care ofâ you kept talking.
He laid under the heating lamp listening carefully. If he could laugh he would. Heâs heard that before. Knowing damn well his last owner started off with âloveâ but quickly forgot about him. He never got comfortable enough to turn so what made you think he would here he wondered.
As days went on you grew fonder of him, seeing some of his goofy personality shine through. His scales looked a lot healthier, a beautiful dark shade with glints of goldish color in them. They matched his beautiful piercing gold eyes. He hissed at you a lot however never making any attempt at striking. After shifts at work youâd pick him up out of his tank, laying him on the couch as you watched tv. It was one of these nights that it changed.
You had done your normal taking him out laying him on the couch with a heating pad beside if he got to cold. He stayed there as you cooked dinner only to be startled from his sleep by a crashing sound. He could smell blood in the air his fork tongue flickering at the scent. âFuck!â He heard you yell from the kitchen with a bit of rustling. He was scared something had happened that someone broke in. In his panic turning âhumanâ. He ran into the kitchen only to see you on the floor holding your hand that was gushing blood.
âWhat the hell happened?â He said making you jump. He looked at you realizing he was âhumanâ.
âYou turned?â You said almost excitedly.
He couldnât help but let out a nervous laugh âthat shouldnât be the focus right now, youâre literally bleedingâ he said before grabbing a clean towel to wrap it around your hand.
You watched him looking over his features. He had a sharp jawline, slim but muscular physique, those gold eyes even prettier. When he started talking your eyes found themselves on his pillowy lips. You could see the small peak of fangs and to your surprise his tongue was split. You were just in awe taking him in not even realizing he was talking to you. Not until he lifted your head with his warm hand. âHello? Are you listening? You probably need stitchesâ he said looking at you were furrowed brows.
You only nodded eyes still scanning over him. You grabbed your phone off the counter with your other hand calling your neighbor. He came over taking you to the hospital and you did in deed need stitches.
Your snake hybrid cleaned up the mess. He finished making the dinner you were working on before it happened and sat there. Waiting. Agonizingly waiting. When you came through the door he smiled sighing in relief. âHey! Thanks for cleaning and- wait you finished dinner?â You said surprised.
âYeah, howâs the hands?â He said.
âAh well itâs not bleeding anymoreâ you said with a laugh.
âI canât believe you cut yourself that deep, what were you doing? Dancing with the knife?â He teased.
âNo this was all just a scheme to see if youâd come to my rescueâ you teased back making him roll his eyes. âSince I can properly ask you now though, whatâs your name?â You asked siting down at the counter.
âHyunjin.â He said.
âGood now I can stop calling you snakeyâ you said laughing.
After that moment Hyunjin didnât turn back for the most part. Sometimes youâd fined him curled up under his heating lamp, other times heâd be curled up on the couch under lots of blankets. Your routine continued coming home, cooking, sitting on the couch with him just watching tv. Now though, he talked back. He got into the habit of curling up against you when you came home. Your bodyâs heat always feeling so nice to him.
You came home today more exhausted than normal though. A fight braking out between some hybrids at work. You being in the middle of it when it happened. Today honestly wasnât as normal as you thought. All the hybrids were acting weird around you. A lot more possessive and clingy. When you walked through the door thinking about it more you realized hyunjin hadnât came out from his tank.
âHyune, are you ok?â You asked leaning down over the tank. When he didnât budge you picked him up like normal his skin scales feeling warm. He hissed at you baring his fangs. âAre you mad at me?â You said softly, making him stop. He slithered up your arm before slithering down your leg. He made his way to the bed before turning back to his human like form.
There was a moment of silence before he spoke. âIâm not mad at you. Ughâ he groaned. âDo you realize youâre ovulating?â He said with a loud groan.
âAm I? Is that why everyoneâs been so weird today?â You questioned.
âProbably- god I donât know how you went to work with all of them. Youâre supposed to be mineâ he said the end of his sentence trialing off.
âI am yoursâ you said quickly with out realizing your own words impact.
âYeah?â He said looking up at you. Those gold eyes had a hint of something in them. âThen let me make you mine.â He said before grabbing your arm pulling you to him.
He didnât give you anytime to protest before kissing you, his lips warm softer than youâd imagine. His kiss was hungry tongue quickly making its way into your mouth. His hands came down pulling your bottoms down quickly in one swift motion. He was moving so fast, his motions only driven by need. The need to have you all his, a primal need. His sharp fangs grazed your bottom lip as he moved down your neck. It was almost like he was a little vampire with those fangs. He kissed down your body, pulling your thighs up to him.
He licked his lips looking at your dripping cunt âsheâs calling meâ he said with a smirk before diving into your core. His fork tongue feeling way different from anything youâd ever had before. Both the muscles moving on their own as they lapped at your folds. His fingers came up to graze against your slick before pushing them into you. He curled them hitting a sensitive spot. The moan you let out only drove him to keep doing it. To hear it again and again. Your hands found their way to his long soft locks.
âFuck Hyuneâ you moaned out.
âFeel good? Gonna cum on my tongue?â He said with a devilish smile.
You nodded making that smile only grow. He picked up his speed fingers finding another even more sensitive spot. With his pace and tongue lapping at your clit your high crashed quickly over you. Walls tightening around his fingers. He licked a long strip up eyes staining into yours. He wanted to keep going, wanted to keep tasting you all over him but he needed to be inside you. Fuck your smell alone was gonna make him nut in his pants.
He stood up pulling down his pants revealing his two curvy cocks. With shock, eyes widen you blurted out âyou have two?!â
He couldnât help but laugh âyeah, you didnât know? Thought you read up on meâ he said. He took your hand wrapping it around the bigger one âthis oneâs the main one, and th- this oneâ he stuttered as your hand grazed the smaller one âthis one is super sensitive like your clitâ he said.
You nodded staring intently at his cocks. He leaned you back pressing his body against your kissing you deeply. He slowly pushed himself into you, the smaller cock rubbing against your clit. He let out a hiss of pleasure before his mind went. He started pounding into you mercilessly. His smacking against yours. The sounds of moans and skin smacking filling the air with the scent of sex. He had his head buried in the crook of your neck his long fangs grazing so gently at it. âI shouldnât even let you leave smelling this good, all of them got their gross scent on you.â He hissed. âIâm gonna make sure they know youâre taken.â
His thrusts continued fast before he gripped at your legs pressing them against your chest before drilling into you. The new angel letting him hit at your cervix. âHyunjin!â You screamed hands coming up to touch his chest. He pulled out fully before pushing hard back into you however he felt bigger. You felt more pressure in your core like somehow his cock grew a size. The pornagraphic sound he let out made your eyes snap open looking down you realized why he felt bigger. His smaller cock has slipped in, your cunt sucking both of them so greedily.
âSh-shit I- I- fuck!â His head rolled back not being able to even speak at the pleasure. The warmth overtaking his smaller cock making it twitch in over stimulation. He snapped his hips back one more time both cocks pushing deep inside of you before you were Cumming. Cumming harder than you have ever before. His body shook at the feeling. Your walls tightening more and more around him. He gripped at your hips harshly digging his nails into you. He cried out as his release finally spilled out painting your walls white.
When you stared to squirm a bit trying to adjust yourself, the movement pushing him deeper into you making him whimper. âD-donât moveâ he pleaded. You realized his smaller cock was still hard. You smirked up at him before moving away only to push back on him. He gasped almost like the wind was knocked out of him. His hands tried to stop your movement but one more push back his smaller cock was cumming.
He had the most intense orgasm, his body shook body falling to the side of you. He tried regaining his breath âIâve- Iâve never- with my smallerâ his words coming out choppy but you knew what he meant.
You pushed some of his hair back kissing him softly. âMâsorry for- I should have askedâ he said still out of breath.
âItâs ok hyune honestly after today kinda needed itâ you said with a smile.
âGl-glad I could help.â He said nuzzling his head into your neck. His breathing was still heavy as you stroked his back.

For Me?
Vi x Piltover! Reader
Vi deserves the world and a partner that cares about her. Being from Zaun comes with its insecurities when being with someone from Piltover. Luckily, you know exactly how to counter them.
A/N: You guys wont have to worry about that much angst from me for a while, I need to cope from act 3 by giving Vi the best life possible and all the fluff imaginable because oh my god??
There were times when youâd think back to when and how you and your girlfriend met for the first time. Such a chance of it happening was very slim given you two belonged to two different cities, you Piltover, her Zaun. You never thought the girl who rammed into you after fleeing from an explosion from an unauthorized lab would one day come back into your life.Â
The story of your reunion however was quite the convoluted one. Once again, a meeting set by nothing but pure fate and chance.Â
You werenât supposed to be at Zaun at the time. In fact, you werenât supposed to be in Zaun at all. You went on your own, against your family's wishes, for the sake of immersing yourself in a culture that is not your own. You were raised to believe that the people of the undercity were monsters, the filth under Piltover's feet, nothing more than animals. It never felt right to you, there had to be more to it. After all, they were people too.
So, you went to see for yourself how awful these âanimalsâ really were.Â
You knew better than to walk in expecting everything to be rainbows and unicorns, but you refused to let go of your optimism as you traveled around the labyrinth like maze of streets and alleyways.Â
It wasnât until the smell of a peculiar type of food filled your senses.Â
You didnât know what it was, it was very different from anything you had ever tried before, so you decided to check it out. Â
Once there, you were greeted by a fairly jolly fish-like man with a large smile. He laughed heartily, gesturing for you to take a seat and gave you a list of things to choose from. There were so many options, you had no idea where to start, and it wasnât until you heard someone else set directly beside you did you finally have an idea.Â
You looked to your left and were quickly met with a head of bright pink hair. Quite a unique shade which you couldâve sworn youâd seen before, but you brushed the thought off. There were probably plenty of people with the same hair color, besides if thereâs one thing you knew not to do in Zaun, it was to stare.Â
You heard one of them, a woman, order something specific off of the fish manâs list, whom she referred to as Jericho. He happily took her order before turning to her friend who denied wanting anything, and then turning back to you.Â
âIâll have the same.â You said with a polite smile. Jericho nodded before turning around and getting right to work. As you waited, you couldnât help but sneak a glance at the girl next to you once again, there was something familiar about her despite her back being turned to you for the most part.Â
That was until her friend noticed you staring and began to pull her hood over her eyes which grabbed the pink haired girl's attention. She quickly turned around to face you with an angered look on her face, clearly ready to fight if need be.
âCan I help y-â She began, but before she could finish it finally clicked with you.Â
âYouâre the girl.â You whispered, having not realized that maybe saying that to a girl who looked, for lack of a better phrase, like she could rock your shit, probably was not a good idea.
âIâm sorry?â She asked, clearly confused, but still clearly not happy about your interruption.
âThat girl, from the explosion, that was you.âÂ
Her reaction to your realization was less than friendly, and you couldnât blame her. You hadnât known at the time but she had just gotten out of jail for that same crime. She didnât know who you were, she didnât know what you wanted, and she didnât want to involve herself with more pilties than she needed.Â
And yet despite everything, here she was, now living with you on her days when she wasnât in Zaun. You had quite the rocky start in the beginning but you became useful to her quest for her sister, and the more time you spent with her, the closer you two got. At first she was a bit standoffish, not believing someone from topside was capable of showing so much empathy, if any. Yet somehow you proved her wrong. You chipped away at that stone wall she built around her heart all those years away in prison and became one of the few things she coveted most.Â
You two didnât live together all the time, but your house was always open to her as you had now managed to move away from your parents. You knew Vi could never stay topside for too long, and youâd never ask her to do such. So there were a few days here and there where she would stay with you, then go back to the undercity to continue to help out, then come back up with you.
Now today was the day for Vi to come back, so you decided to surprise her to the best of your ability with the dish she got from Jericho the day you two met once again. It was quite a feat that required you to go to the undercity a fair amount of times to visit Jericho and ask for help. Luckily the sweet man was more than happy to let you in on a few of his trade secrets for the sake of a thoughtful gift.Â
You werenât the biggest fan of this type of food, youâve tried it on more than one occasion, but it very clearly wasnât for you.Â
But it was what Vi liked so that was enough.Â
As you continued to cook, you heard your door open, without even needing to look you knew it was your partner walking through the door.
âWelcome back.â You greeted warmly.Â
Just then, You felt two hands wriggle around your waist before the weight of her head rested on your shoulder. She tilted her head slightly, her face now moving towards your neck, enough for you to feel the light feeling of her breath wafting over your neck.Â
You ignored the feeling to the best of your ability but you couldnât ignore the small smile that made its way to your face, this of course didnât go unnoticed by Vi as she mumbled against your neck,Â
âWhat are you making?â She asked, pressing her body a bit more into yours. She had a tendency to be clingy after being away for long periods of time, which you didnât mind.Â
âSomething new. Just got the recipe, I think youâll like it.â You said with a smile, which earned a short chuckle from your girlfriend who turned to begin peppering light kisses against your neck.
âIf itâs made by you Sunshine, of course I will.â She said sweetly, despite the fact she was trying to âdiscreetlyâ distract you. It wasnât actually very discreet but she thought it was and you werenât going to correct her.
âIt smells familiar.â She said quietly after pausing for a moment to look back over your shoulder.
âMeans Iâm doing something right then.â You said happily, glad that it was going well. Her confirmation that she at the very least was beginning to recognize it was enough to motivate you to continue. However despite your motivation it was clear your girlfriend still had other plans in mind.Â
Her hands slowly began to move their way up from your waist, pulling you impossibly closer as her face remained by your neck.Â
âCan I at least finish the food first?â You asked with a laugh as your left hand went up to lightly brush against Viâs face, acknowledging what she was trying to do.Â
She once again mumbled quietly against you before finally pulling away.Â
âFine.â She said with an overly dramatic sigh before continuing,Â
âYouâre no fun.â She teased as her hands slowly, reluctantly, left your sides as she moved to the counter next to the stove you were using to cook. She leaned the back of her waist against it, her arms crossed in front of her chest, as she looked at you with a look you could only describe as a lighthearted pout.
âSave that for later you just got back. You have to eat first.â You said in a somewhat stern manner, not looking away from the food cooking in front of you.Â
âWho says I canât have a bit of dessert first?âÂ
âVi!â You exclaimed as you walked her softly with a cloth that you had placed by the stove. She laughed, a full genuine laugh, which she felt like she could only do near you. You were the only one to really bring it out of her at this point.Â
âJust⌠go sit down, the food is almost done.â You instructed, turning back to the food as she chuckled once again before walking back towards you. Her hand made its way back to your waist once again as she leaned towards your ear,
âCanât wait.â She whispered cheekily before giving you a quick kiss on the cheek and walking towards the dining room.Â
You, being from a family who had lived in Piltover for quite some time, were able to afford a house with multiple furnished rooms with ease. It always threw Vi off just the slightest bit, the difference in what the two of you grew up with. It got to her more than sheâd like to admit. A few times she believed herself to be holding you back, you came from a life of glittering buildings, and she came from nothing but metal scraps.Â
You were so different and yet you always managed to remind her that it didnât matter. She loved you for you and you loved her for her, wherever you came from had no effect on that.
Vi sat down in one of the few chairs in your dining room, looking around at the paintings that littered the walls, her previous thoughts remaining on her mind before she was interrupted by a plate of food entering her view and landing in front of her.
âTada!â You exclaimed into the silent room, the only other sound being that of the plate lightly hitting the table. Vi sat in silence for a moment as she looked down at the food before her, it took her a moment before she recognized it.
âWait. Did you-â She began to ask.
âFind the recipe to your favorite dish from your favorite food stand? Maybe.â You responded with a proud smile as you sat down in the chair next to her, eager to have her try it.Â
âHow did you get the stuff for it?â
âWell, I visited a friend.â You said with a shrug. Vi looked towards you, her eyes wide with shock. As each moment passed she realized just how much effort went into this one dish.
âYou hate this kind of stuff, why would you-â
âCause I know you like it and I wanted to make it for you.â You said simply as you placed your hand atop hers.
Suddenly Vi couldnât think of a response. Her sudden silence worried you almost, was she mad? Was she upset at you?Â
You then looked at her eyes and watched as they softened, the powder blue irises glistened as water lightly began to form in them.
âHoly shit.â She said quietly, entirely taken aback as she sat back in her chair. For someone with such a tough exterior you could see the walls slightly begin to crack as she looked down at the food before her. It meant more than the world to her that you had put so much effort into something she liked, for her, and for no other reason.Â
Just because you cared.
It had been a long time since Vi had been truly reminded she was loved. Just having such a simple yet, such a powerful reminder in the middle of nowhere by the one person she truly loved was almost disorienting. You went out of your way to get ingredients you couldn't get easily in Piltover, a recipe you had to go to a specific stand for, her favorite stand no less, and then put it all together?
âVi?â You asked quietly, your other hand going up the cup to her face so she would look at you a bit more as you looked at her with a bit of concern. You didnât expect such an emotional reaction from your gesture that you were worried you had done something wrong.
âAre you o-â
Before you could finish your question, Vi had turned to you quickly and engulfed you in a hug. This took you completely by surprise. In the time that you and Vi had been together, more often than not when it came to specifically hugging, you were the one to initiate. She just never seemed like the hugging type unless it was an occasion where she truly meant it.
And in this case, she did.Â
âThank you, Sunshine.â She said quietly as she squeezed just a bit tighter. Your hands rested against her back as you smiled, feeling as if you had done a job well done even without her trying her dish. You knew Vi had been through a lot over the years and while you didnât know the full extent of everything just yet, you knew you could at least try to offer her some sort of comfort. So thatâs what you strived for and it seems like that's what you succeeded to do.Â
Once she pulled back from the hug, you reached up to wipe her tears, the smile still present on your face as you spoke.Â
âWell, are you gonna try it?â You asked, to which she smiled and let out a slight chuckle. She then eagerly turned back around towards her plate and dug in as she usually did in the undercity. She knew you didnât care about the messy nature that often came with Zaun cuisine, even if it wasnât what you were raised on, it meant a lot to her that you at least tried it out. With one taste she immediately released a sound of pure bliss and dove back in for more.
You laughed, knowing that was Viâs way of saying you had done a perfect job, even if she didnât pause from her eating to just tell you so herself.Â

okay disjointed thoughts about the wicked movie 1 day after watching it lets go
-first of all, my movie theater put speakers outside and was just blasting the entire soundtrack on repeat. we could hear it down the street as we were driving up. that's just simply insane
-the opening establishing shots of the land were great but honestly. the very clearly animated dorothy and gang really annoyed me lmfao like I'm sorry it cannot have possibly been too hard to get a few extras to stand in front of a screen for point 5 seconds lol. it was so fast that I Know I'm being dramatic about it but they looked more cartoon than the flying monkey's did
-baby elphie and baby nessa are the cutest things I've ever seen in my life...
-I kinda...like the more human/animal hybrids that the stage show and the original movie had. sorry. like I Get they were only like that bc you can't make a real life goat sing and dance but they're just more interesting to look at than normal-looking animals who happen to talk!
-jeff goldblum's face being hidden every time he had a dance number...I have a sneaking suspicion that he wasn't really dancing lmfao
-whoever decided to bleach ariana's eyebrows deserves jail time
-when jonathan bailey first showed up on screen my mother leaned over to me and whispered 'he's HANDSOME...'
-when cynthia finished the 'wizard and I' I had to actually stop myself from applauding. it felt so weird and rude for there to be dead silence after that performance my GOD.
-also omg the part where she's singing about the wizard de-green-ifying her and the colors in the suncatchers were canceling out the green so she looked normal....inspired!
-madame morrible had these HUGE crystal ball looking rings and I just want them so much lmao
-glinda's friends were really funny the bit were she was like 'I need to lie down' and they immediately picked her up like a plank of wood and carried her off while the one was screaming 'WE NEED A PASTRY!!! IT'S AN EMERGENCY WE NEED A PASTRY!!!' had me cackling
-I wish there was more time between them moving in and 'what is this feeling' starting? like I wanted more time to see them bickering and then also more time seeing them getting along after the ball??
-'dancing through life' was BEAUTIFUL however two complaints 1) why would they cut the line 'what's the most swankified place around?' I Quote That Often and 2) at the end when glinda and elphie dance together like...it's beautiful and everything but from what I remember after their solo moment fieryo joins them?? and they have a cute three way dance moment??? and I'm very pro "they're all in love with each other" so I missed that lol
-also just in general would of liked to see more of fieryo with the girls! like it felt like ball->lion cub->emerald city, in the course of a couple days, and idk I just feel like they could have slowed it down a bit?? especially since they broke it into two movies?? like I don't think that Actually all happened in the span of a week, but they didn't do a good enough job establishing how much time was passing so it Felt like it. which is dumb bc then it just doesn't seem realistic that elphie and glinda are THAT attached to each other by defying gravity like it feels like not enough time has passed for them to really know each other
-boq felt very mild tbh I know ethan can be more unhinged than that
-would've liked to see glinda in magic class!!
-I was a little underwhelmed by elphaba's costumes? like there were clearly patterns on the material but it was all the same shade of black so you couldn't make anything out. it felt a bit flat. and I love the idea behind the freckles I agree with freckles I am pro freckles HOWEVER her's looked very obviously drawn on. like, I have seen way more realistic fake freckles before. so that was a bit annoying
-other than the lunchmeat dress glinda's costumes were good! especially loved the flower shaped one she wore to the ball
-the whole trying to escape in the hot air ballon scene was cool as hell but as the flaming remains of it fell to the ground I couldn't help but be like wow...she really just killed all those guards huh!
-also lmfao the bit in the woods with the lion club and fieryo has like a scratch on his temple. genuinely thought to myself 'is that his lobotomy scar' lmfao
-still trying to get over the part in dancing through life where people were dancing on the spinning gears in the clock tower...bitch
-the flying monkeys were correctly horrifying
-when I saw the broomstick I was like 'won't that be really uncomfortable between your legs' but then she just held it next to her like they do in the stage show and I was like....okay I guess you win that one? lmfao like I don't mind it for when she's hovering but when they had her like supersonic zooming on the broom it was weird that she wasn't actually riding it
-overall I just don't understand how it's an adaptation of act 1 but it's the length of the entire stage show?? lmao like I wish they took advantage of the split and added so much more but really really it was still just such a solid great movie. 5 stars. I can't keep talking about it right now I'm gonna start screaming.

2nd horseman - War
(click for better quality)
1st horseman - Conquest
timelapse and yapping under the cut
this one was the first one i drew, it was the easiest one to make tbh (it came to me in a dream) (not really but close enough)
it was pretty hard to balance all the red tho (red soul, red swords, red light from the soul and background...) so i made the background light lighter than the soul's light, and i made the outfit a shade of blue so it stands out and so the entire drawing doesn't become a sea of red
the background is just random strokes + liquify tool (push randomly until it looks good, then twirl clockwise on the center), same with the blade texture
also i tried to have the backlight show through K's hoodie, it's mostly visible around the sleeves and a bit around the hips, but it's not really obvious when you first see it (at least to me it looks more like a light coming from the bottom of the image)
so
Why War for Killer?
honestly its the red imma be honest war's attributes are: the color red, a sword and war (as in war and conflict in general, but also as in civil war by opposition to conquest)
killer's whole color scheme is monochrome except for red so it was a pretty obvious match for this one killer uses a knife, and a sword is the closest thing between the 4 horsemen's weapons (i put 2 in just for flair, it doesn't have any special meaning in this case)
the whole war theme also works out pretty well for him, especially civil war. in his og timeline, he was killing & torturing monsters, so he's fighting against his own people (matches with civil war pretty well i think). also he is violent and kinda stupid/mindless, the type to stab first and ask questions never, so it fits war pretty well
the timelapse! (with the brainstorm for all of them as a bonus)

I saw you were doing small requests if we proved we voted for Hassan/Mikey, so here's my proof! I was wondering if you could do something with Leo, since we don't see nearly enough Leo x readers out there. I was thinking maybe a best-friends to lovers thing where they keep trying to one up each other with playful flirtation, but it becomes real in the end, followed by a confession and a kiss? Xxx
Writing Request: Reader x Leo First Kiss đ
Thank you kindly for doing your part! I hope you're enjoying all the content and please tell your friends! Let's push back in this comp!
From now until the poll closes, if you can prove to me that you voted Hassan/Mikey in this poll then I will do any short story writing request like the one below or draw you any doodle of your choosing!
ᴰᜌˢáśËĄáľáśŚáľáľĘł: á´ľ áľáľ âżáľáľ ᜌ⿠áľâżĘ¸ĘˇáľĘ¸ áľË˘Ë˘áľáśáśŚáľáľáľáľ áľĘł áľâżáľáľĘłË˘áľáľ áľĘ¸ áľĘ°áľ áśáľáľáľáľáľáśŚáľáśŚáľâż áľĘł ᜌáľË˘ áśáľâżáľáľË˘áľáľâżáľË˘.
We got some cutie all ages fluff down here, folks!
"And that's when you go in for the kiss!"
Leo had a fist to his lip's and nodded as if this conversation was of the utmost importance.
The random man in question who had approached you while you were hanging out with your best friend was none the wiser. You weren't sure where he had come from, but had interjected himself into your conversation without warning. He had some ripe opinions on romance that apparently couldn't wait for people he knew. Instead of running, Leo had been prompting him for the sake of it and sending you more and more exaggerated looks each time the man looked away.
"What about consent?" Leo asked.
The man reared for a moment before he thought which part. "At which part? We haven't gotten past first base."
"You gotta ask if you're going to kiss someone." Leo spoke with a firmness that you read as genuine.
"The mood!"
"Don't start." Leo shook his head.
"It ruins the mood." The man insisted.
"It does not." Leo waved him off for the first time.
"It does! You think your lady friend is going to still wanna smooch after you interrupt leaning in to ask permission!? That's not manly!"
"Manly, huh?" Leo's mask quirked with his brow. "Also, just lady friends?"
He glanced at you.
You chewed your lip and glanced away to not laugh.
"Ah, man friend, lady friend. Whatever friend! It doesn't matter!" The man huffed. "It's all the same in the eyes of love."
"Consent is hot, that's all I'm saying." Leo shrugged.
"Ah!" The man grunted and turned. "You don't get it! Oh! I bet they do!"
You both watched as the man jogged off at the next unsuspecting group of people.
"Well then!" Leo put his hands on his hips. "I never!"
He held the haughty pose until a giggle finally broke free from you and he slumped to your side.
"That was something." You told him.
"You know I really like conversations like that." Leo stuck a leg out to walk.
You followed his lead with solider-like attention. "Yeah? Seemed a bit like you were teasing him."
"Me!?" He gaped sarcastically at you before his features went lackadaisical. "Making something a gag is second nature. I really do I swear."
You thought for moment. "Okay... Why?"
"Why?" He digested the question and looked up at the buildings. "Let's see. People are interesting. They've got all these opinions and they're wild! Everyone is so different and they'll try to ask these questions about you, but they don't really want to know, but I do. Like I already know me; I want to know about them!"
It gave you pause and you thought back. In all the time you had known Leo, he had been like that. If you ever asked him something as simple as his favorite color, he would somehow turn the conversation around on you until you were matching shades in some sun room that you were going to retire in.
He made you feel like the center of the world and you loved him for it. He was bright and whip smart, but he also had an undeniable loneliness. He never let it get to him, but it made you want to get closer. You pushed to get his number after meeting him. You made sure to text him if a little too much time had gone by. You made future plans with him always included.
You became the best of friends before you even knew it.
Leo said yes to pretty much everything, even when his schedule was packed. it was his eagerness of companionship and just that he was generally a good friend, even if you found yourself mortified around him often. His wit and penchant for a bit meant that if you said the slightest thing wrong that he would hone in on it. It was further sharpened to a knife having had three brothers and because of it you had built a repertoire of inside jokes.
He was special and even just taking a walk with him on a day like today would be a highlight of your week.
"I see it." You eventually said.
"What'dyou think?"
"About what?" You glanced at him and the way the sunlight played on his barely shielded green skin.
"His pitch! That love guru's plan of attack. How to woo your lady, not lady friend."
A smile played on your lips. "Set the mood. Sure, that's good, but when's a mood, right? That's always a question."
"Exacty!" Leo threw a demonstrating hand to you. "Like is it being alone. We're alone right now?"
"Not really a mood?" You looked around.
"Should it be dark? They say those steak houses have romantic lightening when you can't even tell which fork your grabbing."
You laughed knowing what he'd say next.
"I'm telling you!" He pressed with the same knowledge. "They do it so they can give you lower cuts! That's why I always bust out the ole phone flashlight!"
"They do not!"
"I swear I ordered a rib eye but they served me flank. Flank!"
"The horror!"
"But yeah, okay so not the lights."
"Because I totally confirmed that."
"Okay, come here then."
You did so without hesitation.
"Okay, let me just..." He reached behind him to tug his hoodie off.
You watched on.
His chin caught. "Hold on." He squirmed to pull one arm through. "Hold!" It got trapped against the points of his plastron. "Wait, Wait!" His head disappeared down into the hole and you watched the blue fabric writhe.
There was no way he could see you, but when your hand came up to help he immediately scolded.
"Don't you dare! I've got this!"
You weren't sure if it was a bit or not, but that was Leo and he was nothing if not amusing.
"I got it!" In one hands to the ceiling move, his hoodie came off. "Check it!"
He flexed in his average looking t-shirt. "Very attractive."
"Thank you!" He told you with a point of his beak. "Alright, now cloud cover..."
He waved you over to a wall and you followed.
He looked you over a few times before he caged you in so he could hold the hoodie above both of you to block the light.
You stared at his red stripes in their proximity.
"Dark, how are we feeling?"
"Not really a mood."
"It's not a mood!" He cracked a grin. "We're already at the next factor."
"Oh?"
"Closeness. He said that thing about how both people realize they're a little too close and kissing is inevitable."
"Cause if that was true we would have kissed a bunch of times."
"Right?!" Leo clucked. "The Twister incident? That time I hit you with that little trashcan. Oh, oh! When you were demonstrating the banana thing and actually fell."
"That middle one..." You narrowed your eyes.
"An accident, I swear." He looked dire.
"I still think the banana was cause of the floor."
"Sure." Leo drew out the word.
You pinched the tail end of one of his stripes which also happened to be his cheeks.
He smiled all the more. "Alright then. Is that it? We've eliminated everything. Total bunk. That guy doesn't knowing a thing about romance."
"Yeah! Moods? Like what even is that?"
"Like cuddling on the couch?" Leo gagged.
"Running through the rain?" You added.
"Yeah, because I totally want to make out when I'm soggy!" His eyes rolled.
"Your clothes stick together!"
"You have to peel apart!" He shuddered and the hoodie shook as your umbrella.
You reached up on instinct to steady it right as one of the sleeves fell.
"Nice catch."
"Call me champ."
"No, I'm champ."
"You're champion."
"Your champion?" His mask waggled with his brow ridge.
"You can't count that! It was a bet."
"Oh yeah, what was last week when I got you that ice cream?"
"I was trying to be nice to you."
"Only trying?"
"You make it so easy."
"I do. I'm a great guy. Amazing friend. Easy on the eyes."
"The face of disaster. Person I would vote least likely to make a typo in front of because he will never let you live it down."
"I give you my life and my time!" He bemoaned.
"And I appreciate it."
He gave you his best puppy dog eyes. "Do you? You're just saying that. You totally said you were just saying that."
"No, you're the light of my life."
"In that voice? Maybe I'm the light from one of those nightlights that are automatic, like the kind that turn off as soon as you turn the real lights on."
You squared yourself and looked straight into his eyes.
He startled and gave you owlish attention.
"Leonardo Hamato. You are the most important thing to me. You appeared in my life and I made sure you were part of it and at some point you became someone I can't live without."
"Oh." The vowel popped out dull.
You were flooded with a wave of worry.
Had that been too much?
It was true.
You cared about Leo.
He made you laugh.
He made you smile.
He made you a priority.
You did the same with him.
It must have been all the romance talk.
He might have misconstrued the whole thing.
Certainly none of that meant anything more.
With the steam still trapped in your cheeks you met his eye.
He was staring the same intensity.
You shared it a little coy before you decided to face it head on.
You set your jaw and returned the full brunt of your certainty in the matter.
He blinked a single time. "Wanna make out?"
Your eyes went as wide as they could.
"Wait, that came out wrong!"
"Are you kidding me!?" You squawked.
"I said it was wrong! Let me-!"
"That's your idea of consent?!" You tugged the hoodie down.
Since he had his own hold on the fabric it pulled his arm.
Which pulled his shoulder.
Which pulled him closer.
You were inches away. "That guy was right! It does ruin a mood! 'Wanna make out?' Leo, what-?!"
He dropped a little lower and your heart spasmed.
He dipped down so he could look up at you through his lashes.
His gaze liquefied your insides on contact.
He held your gaze for a few calculated moments before he leaned up enough that the heat of his breath warmed your lips.
"I'm sorry. I meant, may I have the pleasure in kissing you?"
You closed the gap.
The hoodie dropped down around you for privacy.
You lost your vision and for a moment it was just you and him.
A tiny version of the world that you didn't mind.
Then, you parted.
Within the confines you heard the smack and felt the way your mouths were both open and ready for another.
"Like..." Leo licked his lips audibly. "Like that. You do it like that."
"If you tell me that was a bit I'm never talking to you again." You whined without an ounce of heat.
"I swear... Kiss on it?"
You tugged him right back to you and he smirked against you.

go spin the wheel, see where it landsâ
Here's the thing about time: it's always running out. He felt it even as a kid, this urgency moving through him, around him. Always just ahead. He'd catch up, if everything else would just slow the hell down. But there are rules, and rule number one is that time tends to be, well, linear. Directional. Things get a bit messy when it's not.
Four seconds. That was rule number two, and the consequences for breaking it areâ bad. To put it lightly.
He doesn't exactly have a choice. Or, he does, but if it's between breaking the rules or not, watching everything he loves get ripped away or digging in, claws firstâ well. He knows a thing or two about fighting dirty.
So, no, it's not a choice. It's immutable, like gravity. Time. A strict progression from cause to effect.
Ekko breaks rule number two.
And the line becomes a circle.
.
He thinks it's a dream, the first time. What else would it be? She fell. She's gone.
She's here now, though. Whole and happy and here, running a hand through her chopped-short hair. That single streak of magenta hits him where it hurts, square in his chest. You can't feel pain in a dream, can you?
"You're back," she says, without looking up. She's lying on her stomach, sketchbook open, a whirling kaleidoscope of color on the page in front of her. "Took you long enough."
"Was I gone?" Ekko says.
She actually laughs at that, the sound filling up his ears, warm and bright. "Benzo was starting to worry, not that he'd ever admit it. Big ol' softie." Her hand flashes, chalk sticks arcing across the page. "You seem to have that effect on people."
He shakes his head. "I don't. I'm notâ"
She scribbles faster, fingers stained pink and blue and every shade in between. "You know, for a smart guy, you're kinda dumb."
"Ouch."
"I still like you, though."
This is a nice dream. Maybe the only nice dream he'll have again.
"I miss you," he says, dredging the words up from some sunless space inside him. "I didn't tell you before."
Her hand slows to a stop. From where he's standing, Ekko can only see a few snatches of detail on the page; a fuchsia smile, twin blue braids.
"I'm right here, buster," she says, not looking up. Grinning softly at her hands. "Never left, actually."
The circle wobbles, shifts out of focus. Time and space folding in on each other like paper cranes.
When he blinks, Powder is gone.
.
Too late. It's always, always too late.
.
"It's you," she says, the next time.
They're somewhere green, somewhere he's never been. A part of the Undercity that doesn't exist where he's from, that never existed.
"Uh." He blinks against the sun. "It's me, yeah."
"Seriously?" Beside him on the lawn, she pops up on an elbow, scrutinizing him. "You still don't get what's happening? Sheesh, hopping dimensions really does do a number on the noggin."
Okay, this is a weird dream. Still, as long as he keeps her talking, as long as he has sun on his skin and grass beneath him, he doesn't really care. He'll take weird. He'll take whatever he can get.
"Noggin, right," he laughs. "Synapses. Drunk slugs."
Powder scrunches up her nose like she's trying not to laugh. "Alright, I give. If you wanna dance around the giant elephant in the room, be my guest." She turns her head into her arm, a shield from the sun. Between them, their hands brush in the grass, pinky fingers tangling together. "Next time, though."
Ekko hums, content. More than thatâ happy. Overflowing with it. Then he frowns. "Wait. Next time?"
Paper cranes, folding in and in and in.
"Dummy," he thinks he hears her say before she disappears.
.
"So when you said 'hopping dimensions', you meantâ"
"Yeah."
"And that meansâ"
"Yeah."
Ekko spins in a circle, arms thrown out wide. "Butâ how? All of this, the lab, the techâ it shouldn't exist here. Heimerdinger made sureâ"
"Hey, you're the genius," Powder says. "I just live here."
Four seconds. He lets it sink in for four secondsâshe's whole, she's happy, she's here, at least in this tiny pocket of space and timeâbefore he's crossing the space between them and pulling her into a bruising hug. Her breath puffs out in mild surprise, and then she's hugging him back, arms cinching tight around him. I won't forget this. But he's already started to. He drops his head to her shoulder, breathing her in, every tiny detail. He won't make the same mistake twice.
Her eyes are wet when they untangle. Ekko swipes at his cheek to find that his are, too.
"I'm sorry," he says. "I'm so sorry. I thought I saved you, but it wasn'tâ I wasn'tâ"
"Don't," she says fiercely. "Don't do that. Not with me, not here. I meant what I said, okay? You're a good one, Ekko. You don't give up on people. If I'mâ if the other me isâ then there was nothing you could've done to change it. That was always gonna be how the story ended."
The tears are a river, streaming salt down the slope of his nose and into his mouth. "I was too slow. I'm always too damn slow."
Powder's hands are on his face, her lips kissing the salt from his cheeks, his eyelids. "The boy savior," she murmurs. "It's not your job to save everyone, you know. But I love you for trying."
She's fading, or maybe he is. Time and space, a never-ending anomaly. But there are constants, too, things that keep the universe spinning. Rules worth breaking.
He feels it, this time. It's like someone's scooping out his insides, rearranging his atoms. Like he's being wiped clean, unmade. Hollowed out so that some other him can be stuffed into his skin. Four seconds is all it takes, or maybe four million.
I love you. I love you, too.
.
He tells her for real, when he sees her again.
"I know," she says, elbowing him in the ribs. Her cheeks are dusky-pink. "Following my lead, huh?"
He looks at her, really looks. Every detail; the dainty point of her chin and the dusting of freckles across her nose and her eyes, big and bright and blue.
"Always," he says.
.
Time and space. Paper cranes, folding and unfolding, creasing the lines of reality. Some rules can't be broken, but they can bend a little.
Here's one: when you die, you stay dead.
.
He must be dreaming. She's standing right in front of him, in this dimension, on this plane of existence, real and whole and here. Her hair is still short, all of it blue.
Four seconds. He holds his breath for four seconds, and then: "Jinx."
"Hey, buster," she says.

Me, rattling the bars of my enclosure, dying and in pain. I'M DONE. I usually try to get commissions done within 3 days but I got violently sick out of nowhere.
More writer's notes under the cut:
I feel like most of my single-character one-shots are quite different from my headcanon fics. But this one especially feels way out there. Magnolia (my previous Dottore-only fic) has a somewhat similar vibe, but this one feels like I doubled the existential crisis.
Honestly, I donât know how to feel about itâwhich is bad since this is a commission. Thankfully, the commissioner liked it, so weâre safe. Or maybe they were just being really nice to me lol. Either way, I hope they did. I initially planned to use the Ayato fic as a guideline, and I kind of did since this fic follows the same structure. But somewhere in the middle, that plan went out the window.
I think Iâm physically incapable of writing Dottore without the relationship dynamic feeling completely doomed. Quite literally, itâs an âIâd follow him into Hell, but I sure wish heâd stop going thereâ vibe. Plus, my interpretation of Dottore is so different from any other character that I was genuinely worried when the same commissioner came back to me. I was likeâdo you know what youâre asking for? Because Iâm about to crack open a philosophy book for this guy. I even took a German word for the title just to satisfy the pretentious bullshit I associate with when writing Dottore. Even with 4,000 words, I feel like I didnât explore the relationship dynamic enough to fully convey the serene yet doomed tone I was aiming for. But Iâm glad most readers, being the smart people they are, picked up on it.
I think my downfall was the music I was listening toâreal bittersweet tracks that probably seeped into the writing. Iâve also taken a lot of liberties with his characterization since we donât know much about the original Dottore. Personally, I imagine heâd be calm and patient. In the Genshin manga, Dottore (Beta) comes off as much more unhinged, while in the Sumeru Archon quest, Omega seems calmer and more composed. So, I assume the original, technically the oldest, would be the most mellow yet hollow of them all.
Oh, and I have to mention this: the (possible) shade of Dottoreâs hair is literally called Air Superiority Blue. Thatâs way too funny not to bring up. I was going to go with Light Blue Slumber (since Iâm trying to build a theme around charactersâ hair colors), but it felt a bit lame. So, I looked up Dottoreâs hair color and found Air Superiority Blue, but that sounded lame too. Then I changed it to Bitter Blue Slumber, which I didnât like either, so it became Bitter Slumber. Finally, while writing this, I went looking for a word that captures "bittersweet nostalgia," since thatâs sort of the relationship dynamic I wanted to convey (not entirely, but close). And wow, Reddit came through. Someone had already asked the same question, and someone else suggested the word Torschlusspanik. I explained its meaning in the fic, but itâs such a perfect word. So yeah, thatâs why the title ended up being what it is. Rip the slumber-title continuity.
Ttorschlusspanik [ Commissioned ]
[ Hcs for Dottore where the reader is very sleepy/sleep-deprived and is constantly falling asleep in battle, on dates, or maybe during research and experiments! ]
Word Count:Â 4k
Ayato Ver: Pale Blue Slumber Semi Part 1: Low Battery Warning [Masterlist]
Thank you so much for commissioning me! Youâre so sweet, and I truly appreciate the tip, but I canât accept this level of generosity. Please let me know if I went under the word count. Also, thank you for your patienceâI got really sick this week and am still recovering.
Torshlosspanik. noun. 1. A desperate feeling that something desired is fading, missing, or being taken away. 2. A feeling of frustration when something one has is departing.
A slumbering figure, a nearly empty desk, and foreboding fabric are the greeting signs to the infamous lab. Itâs ironic, really. The concept that the Doctorâs domain comes with a âreceptionistâ setup stationed in front of imposing steel doors, giving the illusion that this place is as normalâand as morally soundâas any other doctorâs office. At best, itâs laughable to think anyone would believe this place accepts patients willingly, let alone frequently enough to require check-ins. Yet, a shabby but sturdy wooden desk stands innocently in the corner of the entrance, its chipping edges lined with plastic chrysanthemums and white lilies. The artificial flowers are faded, their colors dull from years of neglect, as if mocking the very notion of hospitality. Behind the desk sits an equally worn-down office chair, large enough for someone to curl up in. Its fabric is stained and frayed from years of misuse, the cushion lumpy and barely holding its shape but still useable. All for a receptionist, if you can call them that, who spends more time asleep than actually working as an employee in this most unlikely place. Legs curled up on the seat, arms crisscrossed over the knees in a fetal position. A chin tucked towards the chest, hidden from the view of passersby. Back facing toward prying eyes, leaving only the pronounced slouch of their spine visible, an angle practically begging to develop scoliosis. But the most harrowing detail isnât the position. Itâs the unmistakable black-and-white fur coat draped over them like a blanket, the fabricâs presence carrying an air of authority and fear. A coat only gifted to the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. The desk itself is of no help either. Thereâs no clipboard, no pens, no paper-nothing that could even remotely resemble the tools of an actual receptionist. Itâs an empty stage prop, barely held together by the weight of its own absurdity. And yet, for all its flaws, it stands as the gateway to a place no one in their right mind would willingly step into.
No one dares attempt to wake you. Successfully doing so is practically a death sentence, especially if you go whining to Dottore about the unprompted âalarm clock.â He has a reputation for ensuring the offender never makes a sound again. The only ones bold enough to try and emerge unscathed are his fellow Harbingers, though even they tread lightly when it comes to disturbing your slumber. Itâs both impressive and deeply concerning how much of a deep sleeper you are. The bustling footsteps of agents pacing outside the lab, their sharp voices discussing assignments, donât stir you. The deafening clangs of machinery, coupled with the revolting squelches of severed monster parts being dissected, fail to trigger even a flicker of awareness. Not even Tartagliaâs incessant yammering, loud enough to make glass shudder, elicits so much as an irritated swat from you. Instead, you remain in a state of unyielding sleep, utterly detached from the chaos around you. Your peculiar habit has become such a fixture in the lab that the staff barely remember you exist. You sit perched at their entrance and exit, as still and silent as a gargoyle guarding a forgotten ruin. To them, you are little more than part of the backdrop. A slumbering figure whose presence is a curious mix of ominous and benign.
While it's obvious that the answer to rousing you is to find Dottore himself, or one of his segments if he isnât around, the interesting part is how you wake up. You're not immune to the initial dizziness that comes with awakening. When you finally open your eyes, blinking the sleep away from your eyelashes, youâre always disoriented. Your eyes feel glazed over, as though youâve gone blind from keeping them closed too long. Yet, thereâs always a common theme: you always reach out toward the nearest blue object. Whether it's an odd trinket or a test tube of acidic liquid, your hand automatically tries to grab it and pull it close to you. Itâs part of the reason your desk is stationed outside the lab, away from anything potentially dangerous hidden behind heavy steel doors. Artificial blue has been on the rise lately. Luckily, in nature, blue is very rare. Less than one in ten plants has blue flowers, and even fewer animals are blue. Unfortunately, the biggest nuisance has blue eyesâdead as they are. Tartaglia may not like the doctor, but he does like you. Maybe itâs because your sleep demeanor can be categorized as cute, or maybe you remind him of the simple life in an organization thatâs so uptight. Regardless, that little fox has been clawing at the wooden legs yapping for attention. It's only made worse you don't bother to dissuade him, only indulging in his playful antics. It's led to many, many, lectures from one particular segment.
It's fascinating watching how each segment interacts with your sleepy demeanor. While each segment has varying features and appearances, under the same clothes and mask, they would be indistinguishable if they stood still and never spoke. The only true way to discern them is through their actions and mental processes. Hence, it's easy to tell who is who by the way they go about holding you.
Omega is by far the least attentive or affectionate toward you. Perhaps itâs because heâs the most selfish of them all. Thereâs still an ongoing debate over whether his dislike for you stems from the fact that you stand in the way of fulfilling his desires or if his ambitions extend beyond simply overtaking the divine gaze. Or perhaps the divine gaze isn't actually his goal in the first place. Either way, itâs two sides of the same coin. When itâs Omegaâs turn to fetch you, he does so as if you were any other patient. Completely beneath him. One arm rests behind his back, while the other holds a piece of paper clenched tightly in his hand. His mouth is set in a firm line as he gazes down at your slumped form. Although the air around him is calm and silent, it doesnât take a genius to know that if he could get away with it, heâd drag you through the halls by your hair. Alas, that kind of act would get him permanently disassembled, so he settles for unceremoniously flipping you upright. The arm resting on the small of his back is removed and curls under your stomach. With one swift motion, youâre treated like one of Signoraâs shopping bags. The sight of a limp body folded in half under an arm that surely digs into the stomach is the best way to know if itâs the Omega segment or not.
Beta, on the other hand. Beta. That maniacal and neurotic freak adores you but couldnât care less about you. His research typically focuses on fusing humans with machinery to create âbetter versionsâ of themselves, and he fully believes in that philosophy. You would look so much better if he were allowed to be your sole care provider. If your drowsiness were caused by a medical condition like heart disease, asthma, pain, or a nerve condition, he could simply replace them, and youâd be perfect. If it were a mental issue, well, heâd love you no matter how unresponsive you might be. It wouldnât be much different from you being asleep anyway. When itâs Betaâs turn to fetch you, he does so with a waltz. He walks purposefully toward your desk. Loud and firm, his hands fisted at his sides with unrestrained glee, swinging in time with each step. Even with a mask that obscures most of his face, itâs clear to see the overexcited grin stretching across his lips. Itâs almost like thereâs static buzzing in time with his artificial heart, fuzzy yet electrically sharp. Thereâs no fanfare, as soon as heâs within armâs reach, he grabs the nearest piece of skin and hauls you out of the chair. By some miracle, youâre always still asleep from the rough handling, which is more than enough for Beta to wrap his other arm around your waist. Your chests press together, and he swings your body to and fro in his mad dance. The sight of a limp body dragged into a dancing plague thatâs surely pulling your stiff joints out of place is the best way to know if itâs Beta or not. Beta has been recently banned from coming within a six-foot radius around you.Â
The original Dottore, Zandik, is a unique case. All of the segments originated from him but at different points in time. However, they are still parts of his thoughts and mannerisms. There really is no order in which the segments are ranked, as they canât compete with each other. Whatâs more pointless than trying to beat yourself? Youâll still lose in the end. Zandik is a strange mix of every segment yet none at all. When he wants to see you, he does so slowly, with all the time in the world. His methodical steps echo lightly on the concrete floors of the lab, his arms still at his sides yet loose enough that the slightest wind could blow them away. Itâs as eerie as it is tranquil. Everything about the original whispers of restrained patienceâthat when he arrives at the front of your desk, he simply waits. Usually, it takes you hours or even days to wake up on your own, but when itâs Zandik standing at the edge of your daydream, your eyes slide open. Small ripples in the pond. Youâre still lethargic, blindly feeling your way back into your body as your eyes ricochet off the walls until they land on blue. A weighted hand reaches out to grab that ashy blue, and another hand meets your fingertips.
It would be cute if it were anyone else. The sight of a man with curly light blue hair, carrying a bundled-up figure dressed in a white coat with a fluffy black collar, legs dangling from either side of his waist while his hands rest on the lumpâs presumed back and thighs. It would be so cute indeed, if it were anyone else but Zandik. But for him, it only looks lonely, despite the two of you pressed together.
The moments when you're awake only happen on two occasions: either you just happened to wake up at that time, or itâs check-up day. What kind of doctor would Dottore be if he didnât conduct physicals for his only patient who manages to live long enough each year? The check-ups happen twice a week, always two days apart. Never past two days of separation. Ever. Your exact relationship dynamic with Dottore remains as obscure as ever as to why he cares so much. Whether youâre old friends who knew each other before Dottore set foot in Snezhnaya or even when Dottore was called a different name. Or maybe a dead lover resurrected as a zombie in the pursuit of selfish greed and glorious progress; both are possible options. The zombie theory at least explains why youâre constantly drowsy. The staff have never seen you eat anything before, and with the abundance of... zombie food, it's not outlandish as much as it is disgusting. The old friend theory would explain why you can stomach being around someone who can fly off the handle at any moment. The most willing yet unwilling patient. No matter how often Dottore has to wrestle you upright, only for you to slump back asleep the next second, he never loses his temper. If he has to strap you into a straitjacket and hang you from the goddamn ceiling to keep you sitting with a straight back, he will. But by no means will he get anything more than slightly miffed. If he has to force-feed you your medicine because youâre too loopy to remember how to swallow, heâll shove his fingers into the back of your throat with nothing but a blank smile. The only good thing about your sleep-deprived state is that youâre probably so out of it that you canât feel discomfort. It saves on using the limited supply of anesthesia the lab carries.
Dottore, for lack of a better word, is displeased with your constant need for sleep. He is deeply frustrated with each check-in and the stagnation of your results. For him, bad results are no different from good onesâtheyâre still a means of moving forward. Something that will tell him which direction to take rather than wandering around aimlessly in the dark. But in your case, there are no significant changes, as if everything heâs done has been for nothing. He could have closed his eyes and spun a wheel for the same results. The day before your check-in is always the calm before the storm because the staff knows that when the next day comes, theyâd better keep their heads down or risk losing them. No one is quite sure if your sleepiness stems from mutated genetics or if itâs a side effect of being around Dottore for too long. Stir-craziness and breakdowns are common in the lab, whether among "patients" or "employees." Everyone eventually goes mad, cooped up within the same cell-shaded walls and working under possibly the worst boss imaginable. Add to that the fact that the Fatui donât believe in âmental healthâ days, and with no coping mechanisms in sight, itâs unfair to expect anyone to function effectively. Most people eventually devolve into screaming or manic episodes. Perhaps your escape is more literal. A peaceful retreat from reality through sleep. Youâre not even sure why youâre constantly sleep-deprived, especially when you spend more time slumbering than awake. At first, you thought you might be narcoleptic or taking the wrong pills; a diagnosis from scratch must take a long time, right? That was until Dottore bluntly called you an idiot. He told you itâs a bad habit to self-diagnose every minor inconvenience. You should let him do all the thinking and simply listen to him. And truthfully, with the haze clouding your mind, itâs too difficult to think clearly anyway. So, you nod and do as youâre told. Itâs easier that way.
It doesnât happen often, but it occurs more than it should, considering who Dottore is and the reputation he holds. If you wish to cross him, youâd better make it countâbecause itâll be your last. Heâs in the middle of a meeting with Pantalone, arguing over the labâs finances when a frantic knock interrupts. Apparently, thereâs been a scuffle at the entrance of the lab. To Pantalone's knowledge, there aren't any guards or any agents stationed at the doors except for that sleepy receptionist. Perhaps the doctor's staff finally had enough and decided to take their anger on someone who couldn't fight back? Pantalone's not a good enough person to not find amusement in the situation, infinitely curious as to what Dottore's reaction will be to all of this. Whatever the banker decided to gamble on, his expression doesn't twitch as he follows behind his fellow Harbinger as they walk leisurely through the halls, as if the world has come to a standstill. Itâs almost amusing that when your life is potentially on the line, he suddenly decides to take a midday stroll. The only indication of his amusement is the slight shake in his shoulders, hinting at a silent laugh. Dottore punches in the lock code and throws open the steel doors before the automatic switch can activate, slipping through as soon as the gap is wide enough. He stops at the shabby wooden desk thatâs now gained a few new dents.
This time, youâre curled up on top of the table, your office chair thrown across the room. Broken. Itâs no matter, heâs been meaning to replace it anyway. The chair is just another expense to add to his name. He collects you into his arms effortlessly, and you instinctively sink into the familiar hold. A quick scan from head to toe confirms that youâre unharmed, save for a few strands of hair out of place. Behind him, Pantalone lets out a noise of approval as he surveys the scene. In the center of the room stands a robot with a striking design. A star-shaped frame with six triangular segments forms a perfect symmetry. Glowing cyan cores illuminate the metallic structure, positioned at its center and edges. The intricate details combine sharp, crystalline elements with mechanical precision, radiating an aura of both elegance and menace. As expected of the Doctor. Pantalone canât help but wonder where this machine was hiding when Signora ventured to Inazuma. Perhaps if it had been deployed then, she might have returned in one piece.
Although Dottore no longer needs to sleep to survive, there are times when, as he passes by your sleeping form, heâll pause. He stands still, staring for what feels like an absurd amount of time, meticulously detailing and recording every breath you take within a single minute. Itâs always 17. Sleep occupies about one-third of a personâs life, a significant portion of time that, in Dottore's mind, could be devoted to something useful. Something productive, instead of wasting it frolicking in dreams that neither matter nor will change anything. Yet, even he canât deny that, occasionally, a break from reality can serve as a fragile bandage over a wound that refuses to heal. A fleeting comfort in an otherwise relentless existence. Â
Itâs as awkward as it is unnatural. Despite his title as "The Doctor", his hands werenât designed for gentle touches of flesh and bone. Yet he tries. His fingers twitch involuntarily as he tilts your body to the side, just enough for him to slide in beside you. Carefully, he rests your body against his shoulder. He expects you to jolt awake, his shoulder is bony and hardly a suitable place to rest your head, even when compared to the flaky cushion of the office chair youâve somehow grown fond of. But you donât. Of course, you donât. You simply lay there, your head nestled against his shoulder as if it were the most natural thing in the world. No protests, no shifting away, just stillness. The transfer of heat begins, as described by the laws of thermodynamics. Hotter, faster-moving molecules collide with cooler, slower ones, transferring energy in a quiet exchange. No fireworks, no blaring alarms, just the science of touch, as mundane and profound as ever. Zandik dares to lower his chin, letting it rest lightly against your head. His mask doesnât obscure the quiet moment, though he can feel the unnatural curve of his lips twitching upward ever so slightly. Down here, in the deepest layers of the lab, not even the howling winds of Tsaritsaâs snowstorm can reach. Itâs eerily quiet, save for the rhythmic sound of your breathing. For a moment, he wonders what it would be like if you woke up now. If your half-lidded eyes would squint at him in confusion, or if youâd simply close them again, surrendering to the haze of sleep. But you donât stir. Instead, he lets himself linger, suspended between an unusual warmth and the cold detachment of his own thoughts
"Breaks" are not something you can indulge in down in the labs. The closest the staff ever got was when one of the Harbingers passed away, and even then, it lasted only half a day before they were right back to work. Still, if you ask nicely, Dottore will nod toward an empty seat, silently giving you permission to make yourself comfortable. You take the opportunity to describe the dreams youâve had while Dottore tinkers away in the background. You talk about a train whose tracks stretch far into the stars, far beyond the snow-obscured sky you glimpse through the scarce, frosted windows scattered about the lab. Sometimes, you dream of a whimsical city filled with cute shops and tiny bunny-like robots waddling through fissures in space. Youâre certain he isnât really paying attention, his hands busy with instruments, and his focus locked on his latest project. Sometimes, you suspect he forgets youâre even in the room despite your rambling. A small part of you wants to stamp your feet and pout like a child. After all, youâre only awake for a few fleeting hours each week, and even then, all he can think about is his experiments. His endless, obsessive tinkering. The manâs only "hobby" is experimentation, and you wonder if heâs even capable of entertaining anything else. At least Omega and Beta would give you some attention. Omega might tell you to be quiet with that dismissive tone of his, while Beta would enthusiastically scribble down every word you say, his excitement unnerving yet oddly gratifying. Still⌠your gaze drifts toward Zandikâs back as he works, the muscles beneath his coat shifting subtly with each precise movement. You pull your knees up against your chest, wrapping your arms around them as you rest your cheek against your folded arms. For a moment, you simply watch him in silence, the quiet hum of the lab filling the space between you. Eventually, your eyes grow heavy, and you let them slip shut. A faint smile tugs at your lips as you wonder where your dreams will take you this time. You wonder if Zandik would come with you.
On the rare occasion that Dottore chooses to sleep of his own will, most likely due to substances that induce drowsiness and force his body into a state of rest, itâs always a remarkably uneventful night. He doesnât dream anymore, nor does he wish to. Dreams, like the past, serve no purpose to him now. On certain days, if he concentrates hard enough, he can faintly discern whispers from the other segments he's created. However, they are nothing more than distractions, a cacophony that only aggravates his already meticulous mind. When he wakes, itâs as though he hasnât truly slept at all. His eyelids parted smoothly, his pupils sharp and alert as if no time had passed. Yet there is an unusual sensation, warmth. Dottore does not run warm, and the lab, built for functionality rather than comfort, certainly doesnât harbor it either. He turns his head, curiosity fleeting, and finds you huddled against his side. Your arms are wrapped around his waist in a loose embrace, and your face is pressed against his chest, seeking solace in his stillness. The white coat with its black feathered collar, the one you wear more often than he does, is draped across your body, serving as a makeshift blanket. His hands remain clasped on his stomach, and he realizes with mild irritation that he canât move without risking the possibility of waking you. For a moment, he lingers. The seconds on, and his mind races ahead to the tasks awaiting him. The pursuit of progress waits for no one, not even himself. Every moment spent lying in this bed feels like a yearâs worth of lost discovery.Â
With calculated precision, he shifts. His movements are methodical, almost robotic, as he carefully bundles you in the coat, ensuring the hood doesnât cover your face and obstruct your breathing. In a single fluid motion, he lifts you into his arms as he rises from the bed. He spares a brief glance at your sleeping form, red eyes devoid of emotion. Your breathing is steady at 17 breaths per minuteâa rhythm he has memorized and measured countless times before. Still as serene as ever. But then, for just the faintest of moments, his gaze softens, almost imperceptibly, before he turns his attention back to the work that never ceases to call for him. What a peaceful way to escape the world, the thought as cold and clinical as his expression.

Hi, thank you for reading! I'll reblog this with further writer notes but I wanted to include the research bits in order of appearance. I can't guarantee the full accuracy but I hope I didn't get anything wrong.
Chrysanthemum & Lily
In many Asian cultures, especially in China and Japan, chrysanthemums are symbolic of death and mourning. In China, the flower is closely linked to the Day of the Dead, and in Japan, it is used in funeral rites. While in some contexts chrysanthemums can symbolize longevity or fidelity, their association with death makes them unlucky in certain circumstances, especially when given as gifts or during celebrations.
Lilies, especially white lilies, are often associated with death and mourning, particularly in Christian symbolism, where they are linked to funerals and burials. While lilies also symbolize purity and rebirth in other contexts, their frequent appearance in funeral arrangements.
Head-Down Position
The sleep position reader takes is a parody of the Head-Down position of babies in their third trimester. The head-down position (cephalic presentation) is the most common and ideal position for birth, where the babyâs head is facing downward, towards the birth canal. This allows the baby to navigate the birth process more easily.
Dancing Plague
Also called the Dancing Mania, this refers to a series of events in the 16th century where groups of people, primarily in Europe, suddenly and uncontrollably began dancing for extended periods, sometimes for days or weeks, often to the point of exhaustion, injury, or even death. The most infamous and well-documented outbreak of the Dancing Plague occurred in 1518 in Strasbourg, then part of the Holy Roman Empire (modern-day France).
Algorithm of Semi-Intransient Matrix of Overseer Network
The robot Pantalone sees is the early concept art for ^ but also known as the "Tomb Guard of the Desert King.".
17
The number 17 is considered unlucky in Italy because of its association with the Latin word for 17, which is "XVII". Rearranging these Roman numerals gives the word "VIXI", which means "I have lived" or "I am dead" in Latin. This gives the number an ominous connotation, as it can be seen as a symbol of death or misfortune.
Honkai Star Rail & Zenless Zone Zero
Yes, reader was describing these two games as their dreams lol.

How do you make your colors look so lively?
Do you use layer effects?
Pls tell us how you color and your process and if you use layer effects to do so
for colouring i usually fuck it and ball it really. eye colour pick the shit out of my works. too lazy to download an actual ref just to pick the colours because my pc is Dying. but when it comes to making the colours fit the ambiance i have two (three..?) ways on how i do it personally
if it's a piece with a clear picture of the background â like this one for example â i would try to match the base colours with the background so the colours will look more natural and give the feeling that the characters *are* there in the art
some people would usually start out with using the "multiply" effect and that's okay! but i'm a sai 2.0 user so i kicked it up a bit by using "Shade" it gives off a more depth effect with the colours you're working with rather than "multiply". for the colours itself i match it based on the ambiance that the background is giving. it doesn't necessarily have to be the exact colour from the background where you eye drop the colours â making slight adjustments to it to make it fit your preferences more is ok too!
now it looks more like toya and kohane are in an afternoon set (: i added some shadows and depth to this piece soon, which i choose the opposing colour for to make them look more natural
they're really just shading so i won't explain it too much, and that's really it honestly! i don't use a lot because sometimes too much can ruin pieces ^^"
however there's a second scenario where my art just .. doesn't have any backgrounds. this trick is the trick i use the most because my post contains 90% doodles đ there's two ways on how i do it
the first one
and the second one
that's really it! but again just have fun with colours that suits you, it doesn't always have to be text book learning. fuck around and find out dude

The Use of the Heart
Good evening, followers! I've got a new story for y'all. ~9.8k words. Yeah, this one's long. If you'd like to toss me a tip for it, you can drop one on my ko-fi page here. It...did take me three weeks to write this one.
Avery hadnât gotten more than a foot out of the carriage after his sister before she was whisked away to meet her new husband. He stumbled the rest of the way out onto the stone courtyard and nearly fell on his face. âWaiââ
He bit his tongue before he could finish the protest. They were here so Lisette could meet her new husband. If the crown prince wanted to meet her fresh off the ship that had brought them here, smelling like dead fish and stale sweat from not being able to properly bathe for two weeks, thenâŚ
Then, well, at least all the treaties were already signed in case he changed his mind.
Avery righted himself. The handful of attendants Lisette had brought with her were already busy unloading her trunks and consulting with people he didnât recognizeâprobably their counterparts in Alham. They would know where he was meant to go.
He made a beeline for Robin, the woman in charge of his sisterâs affairs, who was blushing and smiling at a man with dark hair and neat, plain clothes in the dark blue that was Alhamâs royal colors. Someone who worked for Lisetteâs new husband, maybe. He pointed Robin off, and Avery immediately took her place. âHello. I was hoping you could help me.â
The man gave him a once over that no one had ever given Avery before, then said, âWith what exactly?â
âIâve just arrived with the rest of the contingent from Ensheren. I was hoping you knew where to steer me.â
âYou donât already know what you should be doing?â
Averyâs face turned an unflattering shade of pink at the incredulity in his voice. âIâm only here to keep my sister company and help her settle into her new home. Unfortunately, as sheâs already been escorted off without me to see her new husband, Iâm at loose ends in the meantime. You could tell me where her rooms are and I can start there.â
The manâs eyes widened. âSisteâEnsheren sent one of its princes? Your Highness, Iâm so sorry. I wasnât told you were coming.â
Averyâs heel dug into the stone under the sole of his boot, twisting anxiously. He was too tired to deal with this. âNot one of the important ones, Iâm afraid. After youâve had your heir, your spare, your backup spare, one to handle the people, and one to handle the military, you run out of things to do with princes.â
One dark eyebrow went up. âYour parents had quite a few children.â
âThey were hoping for Lisette after the second set of twins,â Avery said. âMy name is Avery. And I really am here to help my sister adjust. If you could tell me where her rooms are, that would be a good start. I can help set it up for her before she returns.â
The man stared at him quietly for another long moment before saying, âYour HighnessâŚI apologize for the bluntness, but you look like youâre about to keel over. I donât think youâll be much help with anything your sister needs. Give me a moment to settle things here.â He reached out and steadied Averyâs arm, and Avery was startled to find heâd been listing to one side. âYouâll be okay to wait?â
Avery nodded, and shook himself to wake up a bit more. It had taken him the entire two weeks to stop vomiting over the edge of the ship, just in time to land and find his legs wobbly again.
The man frowned at him, but let go and turned away to speak to some of the others bustling back and forth over the courtyard while Avery tried to gain his footing. He hadnât felt so bad sitting in the carriage, but now that he was standing in full sun without Lisette, his vision was starting to blur with exhaustion.
Fortunately, his guide was back before Avery could do something stupid, like pass out on the stone in front of everyone. And he frowned the second he saw Avery. âWould you like an arm?â
Avery paused for a second. Then he said, âYes. Please. Thank you. Whatever accepts the offer fastest.â
The man laughed, warm and full and genuine, then took Averyâs bag from him and wrapped an arm around Averyâs ribs. Avery tilted his head against the manâs shoulder and let him lead him into theâcastle? Palace? Avery wasnât sure. But it was less of a fortress than Ensherenâs royal residences. A good place for his sister to call home.
Inside was cooler, and Avery felt better immediately. His guide shifted his arm so at least a quarter of Averyâs weight was resting on his shoulder, and Avery let his settle against it, too. It was the first time since heâd gotten on that damn boat that he felt stable and his stomach stopped churning. But maybe that was because his guide smelled soothing and warm, like ginger cookies, orâŚor cinnamon. Whatever it was, Averyâs stomach stopped rolling over.
He managed to lift his head enough to look around as his guide practically dragged him through the polished hallways. He didnât absorb most of itâjust the impression of dark wood panels, wide windows letting in bright sunlight, and sculptures and paintings at every intersection. They passed through a set of heavy double doors in carved wood, and then into a smaller door down the hallway from that, and his guide let him go to stand on his own again.
They were in private chambers. Empty ones. Two doors were set against the far wall, and another one to Averyâs left. Between them were three couches and two armchairs, and one large table.
âThese are my rooms,â his guide said. âYou can bathe here and then take a nap while we wait for your sister and Kavi to come up for air and remember anyone else exists.â
âKavi?â Avery asked.
âMy brother,â his guide said. âYour sisterâs new husband.â
âYourâyour brother?â
His guide smiled at him. âMy brother.â
The floor felt closer than it should have. âKing Solon,â Avery said. âIâIâm sorry, Your Majesty. No one ever told me what you looked like.â
âIâd gathered,â the king said. âAnd no one told me you were coming. Weâll just have to both forgive each other. The bath is over here. Iâll find something for you to wear and Iâll put it in the dressing room.â
He left Avery alone in an alcove off of a bathing room with a bench. Avery sat down abruptly and pressed his face into his hands. Heâd spent at least fifteen minutes using the king of a foreign countryâthe one Lisetteâs fate was in the hands ofâas a crutch.
While smelling like a cheap fishmonger who didnât know what hygiene was.
What a wonderful first impression Ensheren was making on their new allies.
~~~~~~~~
The bath was large enough for Avery to stretch out in and had taps that ran fresh hot water. He slid in with a sigh and opened the jars next to him, looking for shampoo and soap. The first one had the same strong ginger scent the king had whenâ
When Avery had practically shoved his nose into his neck.
His face went red, and it wasnât from the steam of the bath water.
The bottle was thin oil, though, not proper soap or shampoo. Avery left it open to scent the air while he cleaned up, and it was thick and heady in the bathroom by the time he felt properly clean and presentable The kingâor someone who worked for himâhad left clean clothes in the sitting room on the bench. They werenât from his luggage, but if he didnât have a room, no one would have unpacked his things, either. He ran his fingers over the soft fabric, then pulled them on.
Soft pants, longer socks than Avery was used to, a shirt in a pale goldenrod color, and a dark blue tunic to go over it. He fiddled with the laces, unsure how tight Alham expected people to wear their clothing. Ensheren usually wore things closely fitted.
He tightened the waist in and tucked the extra lacing inside to hide it. Might as well remind the king he was from a foreign country. Maybe it would give him some grace for treating him like a walking stick.
His face flushed again at the memory, and he fiddled with his boots, waiting for the blush to fade before he stepped back into the sitting room.
The king was curled at a desk near one of the wide windows, feet tucked next to his legs. He glanced up from whatever he was writing when Avery joined him. âFeeling any better, Your Highness?â
Avery nodded. âThank you, Your Majesty.â
âSolon. My name is Solon.â
Avery almost laughed in surprise. His breath came out in a sudden huff anyway. âYou just called me Your Highness!â
Solon grinned. âYou didnât give me permission not to. I did.â
âIâll call you by your name if you call me Avery,â he said.
âI think thatâs a fair deal, Avery.â Solon made a soft humming sound. âYou should get some sleep. Iâm afraid theyâre still cleaning up your rooms and hauling your things in there. Itâll be a few hours, I think.â
âIââ
âAre you not tired yet? If you want to stay up for a bit, I could use your help.â
The bath had woken Avery up, although he knew heâd fall asleep in minutes if he lay down. But he didnât have a room yet, so did Solon want him to take his bed?
Avery tore his thoughts away from that. âWhat did you need?â
Solon waved to the chairs nearby. âPull one of those up.â
Avery grabbed the nearest chair and slid it to where Solon pointed, then tucked himself into it while Solon rummaged for a clean sheet of paper. He handed Avery the pen. âYour family. Iâm realizing I know very little about what my brother married into.â
Avery fiddled with the pen. âThen why did you agree to it?â
âHonestly, once I saw how Kavi reacted to your sisterâs letters, I was sold on the arrangement. HeâŚwell. He liked what he learned of her immediately. And the details of treaties like this arenât my job.â
Avery frowned. âYouâre the king.â
Solon tilted his head. âI am. But Iâwell. Alhamâs parliament decides what powers the monarch has. They vote on it every five years. And while the current officials are happy enough to have me help lead and oversee laws and even introduce some of my own, details of things like this are not my forte. Far more talented people than I do that.â
âTheyâvote? On what youâre allowed to do?â
Solon nodded. âThe laws here donât allow them to get rid of a monarch, exactly. But they can refuse to give an unpopular monarch or one no one trusts power until they abdicate. My grandfather was blocked from doing anything for three decades until he let my father take over. And my father only won their trust back by working his way up through the legislature and learning how it worked before they let him do anything.â
Avery cleared his throat. âIâm sorry. I only had the time on the ship to read up on your country, and nothing like that was mentioned. I didnât realize.â
Solon nudged the paper closer to Avery. âA family tree, please. And what each of you does. Iâd ask your sister, but Iâm not willing to interrupt newlyweds on their first day and night together.â
Aver turned pink at the implication. âI can do that.â
He drew marks for both his parents first, then took up the entire width of the paper to list out his brothers. âMy father is the reigning king. He spends his days meeting with his advisors and the elected governors from each of the counties at home to make decisions and decide how theyâre going to go be done.â
Avery drew two branches off the same root from his parents. âThese are the oldest twins. Jamie is the heir. He spends his days shadowing our father and trying to learn everything and how to run things. He has two kids with his wife, but theyâre both too young to take on any responsibilities yet. Zeke is second in line. He handles all the petitioners from around the country who arrive and need to speak to someone, and figures out how to resolve things. And if he canât, he goes to Jamie and Dad.â
Avery drew another line. âAnd then the next twins, Jack and Max. Jack filters things for the older ones and makes sure that theyâre not overwhelmed with too many things. He decides whatâs most important to get their attention first, and redirects everyone else to other ways of handling issues.â
Solon hummed. âI think Jack was the one who first sent the letters of interest to me proposing I marry your sister.â
âYou?â
Solon waved his hand. âKavi was always more interested in marriage and children than I ever was. I suggested him to your brother instead, and he accepted. Your sister will still be the mother to any heirs. Alham doesnât need a queen or a prince consort.â
âTheâŚthe prince consort?â
âThe husband to the monarch. If I had one.â
Averyâs mouth fell open. The king could have a husband, if he wanted? Something burned in his stomach. His family had never said anything about his interest in other men, but Avery wasâhe was useless. And Ensheren didnât need yet another heir. It was for the best he wouldnât have any other children.
âTheâŚthe way your country works is very different than Iâd imagined,â Avery said, choking back something clogging his throat to stare at the paper.
âIâm realizing that. Is marriage between two people of the same sex not allowed in Ensheren?â
Avery lifted one hand and found it shaking, and he waggled it back and forth. âNo, weâŚ.we can, mostly. But the kingâŚmy father, or my brother, could neverâtheyâthey need to have children. Have direct heirs. Itâs allowed for most people, but there are people with power who just. Canât.â
Solon stared at his shaking hand for a long moment, then said, âTell me about Max.â
Avery forced himself to look back at the paper. âMax does whatever he wants. Heâs the most charming of us. He likes to mingle with the people in town and the rest of the country without going through proper channels. Itâs hard to figure out when heâs in the castle and when heâs out. And he never tells anyone what heâs up to before goes and does it. Honestly, we usually hear of his escapades from the papers first. But it means he has more information on how things are going in the country than any of the rest of us. Itâs why everyone likes him so much.â
âYou like him,â Solon said.
âHeâs everyoneâs favorite brother,â Avery said. âEven Lisetteâs.â
âAnd yet youâre here with her and not Max.â
âI donât think Max has ever left the country. I donât think he wants to. Besides, heâs busy. Formally, heâs in charge of most of the internal affairs of the country before anything has to be escalated.â Avery drew the next line before Solon could ask any more questions. âThis is Lennox. He grew up watching after the knights training grounds and begging him to teach them, and joined up as soon as our father finally gave him permission. Heâs worked his way up the ranks to be the Ensherenâs top general now.â
Avery drew two more lines. âThis one is me. And then Lisette is the youngest. She was raised expecting to be married as part of a treaty, although we didnât know it would be with Alham until the last couple of years. Sheâs ready to play her ambassador role. Donât worry. Sheâll be good at it.â
Solon pushed Averyâs hand back to the line for himself. âAnd what do you do? You didnât say.â
ââŚNotâŚnot much of anything,â Avery said. âBy the time I was old enough to realize I needed to find something, my brothers already had things handled.â He shrugged. âRight now, Iâm here to help Lisette get her bearings. Thatâs all.â
Solon watched him silently for a moment. Averyâs face went pink again, and he set the pen down. âEnsheren doesnât need more royalty getting involved in things, and being given a job Iâm not qualified to do would only cause more problems.â
Solon frowned, and Avery hated it. He knew he was useless. He knew he wasnât contributing anything to his country the way royalty was supposed to. He wasnât stupid. He knew that six princes was at least two too many, and while everyone had forgiven him for not having anything to prepare for in the future as a child, and heâd managed to put it off a few more years at university, every day since heâd turned twenty-five, more and more whispers had churned, wondering what his purpose was.
âI see,â Solon said finally. âThank you. This will be helpful. Now, you should get some sleep. Iâll wake you up when our siblings come up for air, or when your rooms are ready. Whichever comes first.â
Avery took a slow breath to calm the frustration that had been building in his chest. Sleep. In Solonâs bed. But at least it would be in another room. âThank you.â
Solon tilted his head. âThereâre pillows on the couch over there. Do you want a blanket?â
Avery jolted in place. âNo! No, thatâs fine. Thank you.â
He turned away before Solon could read anything on his face and realize Avery had been thinking about Solonâs bed. Avery crossed the room to the couch and lay down, facing resolutely away from Solon.
He closed his eyes, took several slow breaths, and tried not wonder what Solonâs bed looked like.
~~~~~~~~
Solon woke Avery after true dark had fallen with a hand to his shoulder. Avery usually started awake when someone shook him, but this felt more like shifting awake on the boat, gentle and dizzying.
He blinked up at Solon in the dim lamplight, shaking himself to remind himself where he was. âWhaâ izzit?â he asked, and immediately clamped his mouth shut. If he couldnât speak properly, he shouldnât be talking at all.
Solon laughed. âYour room is ready for you, and your sister and my brother will be joining me for dinner soon. I thought you might want to change before they get here. Youâre coming?â
Right. Avery was in borrowed clothing. âI shouldâŚdefinitely wear somethingâŚmore presentable.â Even if Solon had seen him smelling and looking like a beached fish, the crown prince didnât have to. And he was the one Avery should be focusing on, not Solon.
And what would Lisette have to say if Avery showed up to dinner looking rumpled and dressed in clothes that werenât his?
âŚHe definitely needed to change.
âIâd like to get ready,â he managed.
âOf course.â Solon helped him to his feet with a warm hand, soft except for the small finger callouses Avery was used to on artists. âIâll show you your rooms. You can make it back here on your own, do you think, or would you like me to wait for you?â
Avery shrugged, and trailed quietly after Solon through the halls. Solon hummed something quietly to himself, but didnât interrupt Averyâs contemplation of the palace walls now that he was awake enough to take it in properly.
The windows were wide and bright, the courtyards huge and full of gardens and not soldiers, and the walls hung with sculptures and paintings.
It felt safe. It would be a good place for Lisette to live. An unworried home without any need to be on guard constantly. Ensheren hadnât seen a war in the last four decades, but the castle theyâd been born into and all the ones theyâd traveled between were still built with the lingering need to barricade in mind.
Solonâs home seemed more like a public showcase. Like it was designed to welcome people, like it belonged to the people, the way Solonâs job did.
Solon waved Avery into a series of small roomsâa bedroom, a small sitting room with a desk as if Avery had any guests to greet in Alham, and an attached washroom. Not lavish, butâit would do.
âItâs only two hallways,â Avery said. âI think I can make it back.â
Solon smiled. âThen Iâll see you shortly.â
Solon left him alone with a wave, and Avery dug through his wardrobe, pleased to find everything already unpacked and hung up for him. Avery didnât normally fuss about his clothes, but normally he wasnât meeting his sisterâs husband.
Or trying to change someoneâs horrible first impression of him. Avery was the useless prince of Ensheren, but he was still a prince. He could impress if he tried.
Hopefully.
He threw the borrowedâgiftedâclothes onto his bed and swapped it out for his best pants, woven in a tight herringbone than shifted between gray and crimson, buttoned a gold shirt over it with dark brown buttons that matched his eyes, and wrapped it in place with a burgundy vest. Not the royal colors of Ensheren anymore than they were Alhamâsâbut they were Averyâs best colors, and he wanted to look nice. He rummaged through the wardrobe until he found his dark red coat and slid it on before brushing his hair out of the sleep mussed disaster and washed his face.
And then it was time to face Solon again.
Avery knocked at Solonâs door before opening it, and all three people in the room turned to him with a bright, âAvery!â
Avery froze at the sound of his name in unison from so many voices, then held up his hand to wave slightly, and drop it.
âUm. Hello.â
Solon smiled warmly, and Avery tore his eyes away from studying his face, hoping for surprise or at least approval, to meet his sisterâs gaze. Sheâd gotten a bath and her hair curled down her back in loose waves over her nicest, newest dress.
She wanted to look nice for her husband. Good. That meant she liked him.
âLisette,â he said. âYouâreââ He stopped himself, then restarted, âYou look nice.â
âSo do you,â she said, eying him skeptically. âYou put in effort.â
She still had one arm looped through her husbandâs. It was easy to see that Solon was his brother, now that Avery had seen them both. They had the same dark hair fighting a wave, the same bright blue eyes, the same tall, slender build. Neither Solon nor Kavi was built to be a fighter like Lennox was, but neither was Avery. âShould I not want to make a good impression on your husband? I thought it would be good to at least try.â
The crown prince laughed and reached a hand out to shake Averyâs. âIâve heard a lot about you.â
Avery ducked his head into a bow before shaking his hand. âYour Highness.â
âKavi. My name is Kavi. And yours is Avery.â
âKavi,â Avery agreed. âIâm glad to see my sister seems so eager to impress you.â
âAvery!â Lisette said, turning pink the same way he did.
âWhat? It means that you still like him as much as you did from the letters.â
Kavi laughed, a deep, warm sound that dragged another smile out of Avery. He was kind. He was friendly. And he kept turning toward Lisette like a magnet.
All good signs.
âLetâs eat,â Solon said, pulling the warming covers off the serving trays.
Kavi pulled a chair out for Lisette, then took the seat next to her. Avery took the seat next to Solon more gingerly than necessary and folded his hands in his lap, uncertain what pre-dinner rituals Alham observed.
Apparently, none, because Kavi started scooping noodles onto his plate as soon as Avery slid his chair closer to the table, and Solon stirred a pot of potatoes in some red-yellow glaze that was tangy enough to make Averyâs mouth water from across the table.
He took several thick pieces of bread, still warm, and buttered them, and slowly filled the rest of the plate with food. But he waited for Solon to take his first bite before he started eating.
Solon nudged Averyâs arm before he could get more than two bites into the lovely, warm duck and offered him a ladle filled with the sauced potatoes. âYou should try these. Theyâre my favorite.â
âIf you donât like them, tell me and Iâll smack Solon for you,â Kavi said. âI asked for our chef to come up with something close to Ensherenâs food for you. I thought it would be good to acclimate you slowly. She even got a recipe book. But Solon cannot go a day without those damn potatoes.â Solon jerked under the table like heâd been kicked, and Kavi grinned at his brother.
âThey taste good,â Solon said, sounding petulant and everything he hadnât been the entire day while Avery collapsed on him. Lisette giggled into her bread and Avery couldnât help a grin crawling onto his face.
âThat does explain why you have peppered duck,â Lisette told her husband. âYou remembered?â
Kavi turned to her with a smile that softened like butter over the bread Avery was busy shoveling into his mouth. âI would have double checked before asking our chef if I hadnât.â
Averyâs chest warmed. Kavi and Lisette had been exchanging letters constantly for nearly two years already. They knew each other, even if theyâd only met in person for the first time that day. He didnât need to worry. Lisette knew what she was getting into far better than Avery did. She would be fine.
âYouâre getting along well.â
Lisette pinked. âWeâve had a good day.â
âAnd I look forward to the next ones,â Kavi said, reaching over a tray of dumplings to touch her hand.
She smiled at him. âSo do I.â
Avery fell quiet as he finished eating, eyes on his plate instead of his sister. She would be fine. Alham would be a good home. Kavi would be a good husband. Every single one of their brothers had insisted he accompany her, and even their mother had pulled Avery aside to give him her best guilt trip over his hesitance.
Maybe that would be for the best for Lisette. She didnât need anyone to intervene.
He let Lisette and Kaviâs gentle flirting and Kavi teasing his brother wash over him without feeling the need to add anything. They were all content with each other, and he was content to know that.
Except that Kavi and Lisette and Solon all kept glancing at him, waiting for him to say something, and continuing with awkward pauses when he didnât add anything. And by the time Avery had cleared his plate, Lisette had, clearly, gotten fed up with it. âAvery,â she said, âKavi wants to know who my family is, too. And youâre the only one heâs getting the chance to before the wedding, and that isnât for months. Will you please act like yourself?â
Avery startled in his chair. âWhat?â
âI miss the brother who used to sneak out of the castle with me and help me climb apple trees and bought me all the books our parents thought I shouldnât be reading and taught me how to waltz after curfew.â
Avery blinked. âBut Max did all of that.â
âMax did all of that with you. Youâre the one that did all of that with me.â
Avery laughed. He couldnât help it. âMax did not teach me how to waltz, Lisette.â
âHe didnât teach me either! Avery, I spent so much time telling Kavi about you. I want him to actually meet you. Stop being so quiet.â
âI was quiet at home, too,â Avery said, trying to bite back another laugh. âIâm tired. Give me a day or two.â
She leaned across the table to stare him down. âIf youâre not acting like yourself in the week, Iâm going to chase you around the courtyard with a stick.â
Averyâs helpless laughter was drowned out that time by Kaviâs, and Averyâs eyes darted to him again. He grinned at Averyânot worried about what Lisette had said, thenâand stood up. âI think thatâs a good reminder to all of us to get some sleep. Perhaps when youâve gotten a chance to settle in here, Lisette wonât have to threaten you anymore.â He turned to his wife. âLet me escort you back to your rooms. Theyâre attached to mine if you need anything.â He winked. âAlthough with any luck, Iâll have wooed you into sharing my bed by our wedding.â
Solon made a disgusted sound from the back of his throat. âKavi! Donât be so crass. Her brother doesnât want to hear that.â
Kavi stuck his tongue out at his brother. âThat wasnât crass, Solon. I was expressing interest. I kow explaining that to you is like trying to tell a fish about the desert, but itâs not inappropriate.â
Solon flushed red. âIâm not that bad.â
âAnd neither am I. Now Iâm going to take my wife and settle in for the night. Good night, Solon.â He inclined his head to Avery. âIt was good to meet you, Avery. I hope weâll get some more time together once youâve settled in here better.â
He escorted Lisette out the door, and Avery turned to Solon. âThank you for your hospitality today. ItâŚitâs been more than I could have expected.â
Solon raised an eyebrow as Avery straightened. âAnd whyâs that?â
âWell IâIâm an uninvited guest. And yetââ
Solon gave him a smile, warm and bright, and it made Averyâs stomach flip over itself in a dangerous way. âIâve been happy to help, donât worry.â
âRight,â Avery said, which he was distantly aware wasnât the right thing to say. He backed up towards the open door. âIâll let you attend to your bed, then.â
He darted out the door before his face could turn red again and before he had to think about Solon and beds again.
~~~~~~~~
âAvery! I was wondering where youâd gone. You didnât answer when I tried your door earlier.â
Avery straightened from where he was bent inspecting the palace gardenâs flowers. âSolon! Iâm sorry. I didnât realize youâd be looking for me.â
Solon grinned. âIf nothing else, I am expected to play host to royal visitors. And youâre the only one here that isnât married to my brother.â He waved an arm back the way he came. âSo let me do my job and show you around Alhamâs capital.â
It wasnât as if Avery had any reason to say no. And with the way Solon was smiling, he didnât want to, either. So he smiled back, nodded, and let Solon lead him out of the palace and into the streets.
With no guards, at least none visible. Solon was dressed in the same unassuming clothing that had Avery mistake him for an attendant instead of a king, and no crown was in sight, but Avery still felt strange as they left the palace grounds, like someone had forgotten to give him a jacket in the winter. Like a weight was missing.
âToday we can go on foot,â Solon said. âWe canât reach everywhere in the city that way, but thereâs plenty to see in walking distance.â
Avery nodded and stepped closer to him when a carriage passed by on the street, driving straight past the palace gates. Solon took the opportunity to lean in and whisper conspiratorially, âTo be honest, most of my favorite places arenât close, but maybe Kavi had a point in acclimating you slowly.â
Avery laughed and Solon grinned back like he was surprised to hear it.
âWell, what fun are you taking us to today?â
âI was going to start with the high street shops. Not that Iâm trying to drum up the local economy, although parliament would probably like me to. But itâs also where the mostâŚpoliteâŚstreet performers gather and itâs a good place to see everyone from all parts of the city head to shop. Unless youâd rather do something else? I could do my best to keep you off kilter so your sister chases you around with a stick.â
Avery shoved at Solonâs shoulder without thinking about it, the same way he would have any of his brothers. Solon didnât budge, and Avery drew his hand back like heâd burned it. âIâIâm sorry.â
Solon caught his wrist before Avery could withdraw completely. âAvery, the treaties between our countries are already signed and Iâm not going to take Kaviâs wife away from him.â Heâd pitched his voice low and soft like he was talking to a skittish cat, and Avery felt tension melt from his face and shoulders embarrassingly quickly. âYou donât have to worry about offending me. It wonât cause any harm if you do, and I wonât hold it against you, either. Weâre both getting to know each other. Are you going to do anything against Alham because I didnât know who you were when we met?â
Avery blinked. âBut you didnât do anything.â
âI thought you were one of Lisetteâs attendants trying to get out of work.â
âSo? I thought you were your brotherâs.â
Solon laughed. âSee? Weâre even. Weâve both done things that could have offended each other, and neither of us are mad. Right?â
Avery glanced sideways at him for a moment. âAll right. You have a point.â
âSo youâll stop trying to be so careful?â
Avery lifted one shoulder. âI think youâll be disappointed in how I act when Iâm relaxed. Lisette made me sound much more adventurous than I am.â
âThatâs okay. Weâre starting small today. We can work our way out into the city as far as youâre willing to push yourself. Or until you start kicking me.â
Avery ducked his head and then smiled. âIs that always how Kavi gets you to leave him alone?â
 Solon pressed a finger to Averyâs mouth. âDonât go telling everyone his secrets.â
Averyâs breath caught until Solon dropped his hand away from Averyâs mouth again, and he pressed his lips together to imprint the feeling on them.
And so he didnât say anything stupid.
~~~~~~~~
It was apparent by the time the week was outâand Lisetteâs deadline had comeâthat Solon had every intention of taking Avery somewhere in the capital city every single day. At least until Lisetteâs wedding, which was only five weeks away.
It was more attention than Avery was used to. More attention than he knew what to do with. But two weeks into his stay, he managed to hide away with Lisette for one of her dress fittings.
âWell, youâre having fun with Solon, arenât you?â Lisette asked. âRight?â
Avery narrowed his eyes at her, trying to figure out if she was trying to imply anything. He and Solon had done nothing remotely scandalous. The fact that Solonâs smile and presence was enough to flip Averyâs heart over in his chest wasnât the point. But his sister could tell. She always knew when he she saw him with someone heâd gotten a crush on.
âIâm enjoying myself here,â Avery agreed before immediately changing the subject away from Solon. âMore importantly, are you? Because one of us is staying here after the wedding, and one of us is going home with our parents and brothers. Has Kavi been showing you around?â
Lisette huffed. âWeâve been busy.â
âBusy with each other, or busy with the wedding? Becauseââ
âOh, just because Iâm not in charge of all of the details doesnât mean Iâm not involved in my own wedding, Avery! Itâs in a month and I only just got here and I donât know anyone yet andââ
Avery clamped his mouth shut as his sister ran out of steam. She was stressedâof course she was; she was trying to build an entirely new life somewhere sheâd never been, and Avery had decided she was fine and spent his days entirely occupied with Solon and his ginger cologne thatâno, Avery did not need to find someone to bring back to Ensheren. âWhat can I do to help?â
âAveryââ
âThatâs what Iâm here for, isnât it? Our brothers were pretty clear about that. I want to help you if I can, Lisette. Please.â
She rolled her eyes at him, but she smiled while she did it. âSo youâre only helping me because they asked you to? Not because you think I need help?â
âYour Highness,â the dressmaker said, kneeling at her waist, âI appreciate your spirit, but if you could have this conversation more sedately at least while Iâm trying to pin things in place.â
Lisette went red up to her hairline. âIâm sorry. I havenât had this done in a while.â
âYou had this done two months ago to get that dress you wanted when you saw Kavi for the first time,â Avery said.
His sister scowled at him. âWill you hush?â
âYou wanted me to be like this. Threatened me with a stick,â Avery said. âNow tell me what I can do to help you adjust here.â
Lisetteâs shoulders slumped, but she caught herself before she did anything more to disturb the dressmakerâs work. âI donât know, Avery. I just want some time alone with my husband again to get to know him and this country better.
A clap came from the door. âDone.â
Both Lisette and Avery jumped and turned to look at Solon leaning against the door frame. The dressmaker sighed and stood up to take a break and fetch something from his work kit.
âSolon!â Lisette said. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI was looking for your brother. But if what you need is a day alone with my brother and this city, I can make that happen easily. The wedding details can manage a day without you. In fact, maybe even getting out of the city would be good. Our mother lives out of the city on a large estate near the woods. Would you like to visit her? Itâs quiet and private there, but maybe meeting your husbandâs mother wouldnât help.â
Lisette blinked. âYour mother is still alive?â
Solon frowned. âIâm only thirty-one. My fatherâs death five years ago was very shocking, but it didnât put my mother in any poorer health. Sheâs still quite young. She just wasnât chosen as the next monarch.â
Thirty-one. When Solon had been Averyâs age, heâd taken up a crown. And Avery wasnât even able to help his sister relax.
Lisetteâs mouth opened into a soft circle. âKavi gave me a brief explanation of how the lineage works here, but I didnât realize your mother was still alive. Will she be coming to the wedding?â
âOf course. In the meantime, however, what would you like to do to squirrel away some alone time with my brother? Iâm happy to do whatever I need to make it happen.â
Lisette hesitated, and the dressmaker attacked her waist with pins while she stood thoughtful and still.
âI think,â she said, âI would like to meet your mother before the wedding. Would sheâŚwhatâs sheâs like?â
âCheerful, no nonsense, and very pleased Kavi found someone he likes so much,â Solon said. âI canât promise she wonât have any questions for you, but I think sheâll be quite welcomingâand even if she gives you a proper interrogation, itâll certainly be a distraction. I can pack you and Kavi off before nightfall and youâll be there before morning.â
Avery nodded enthusiastically. âJust give me a list of things to handle while youâre gone, Lisette. I can at least do that much for you.â
âIâŚare you sure?â Lisette asked, pausing with a frown.
âDo you think I wonât do it properly?â Avery asked. âItâs for you, Lisette. Iâll do my best.â
Lisette laughed. âIt has nothing to do with that at all, Avery. It just seems strange to let you handle things here while I go somewhere without you.â
Avery stood up, and sidestepped the dressmaker to take his sisterâs hands. âThatâs what this entire trip is meant to be. Go spend time with your husband. Iâve got this.â
~~~~~~~~
Avery did not have things. His sister left for a week see Kavi and Solonâs mother, leaving Avery with a list as long as his forearm to see to. And he only knew how to do one of themâchecking the translation of the wedding program for the foreign guests. But heâd asked after that first. It wasnât ready to be looked at yet.
And so he gave up his borrowed desk in his borrowed rooms and took the list to Solonâs room, hoping to plead help from him yet again.
Solon answered the door with a surprised smile and welcomed him inside immediately.
âDo you need something?â
âIâm sorry. I know we agreed that you wouldnât need to host me this week while I took care of Lisetteâs things, but I was hoping you could at least direct me to who I need to talk to. Lisette has been handling all of this alone.â
While Solon took him sight-seeing and showed off his favorite statues and museums and strange buildings, and they laughed at things for hours. But Solon knew that.
Solon waved that off. âIt was starting to get boring without you around anyway.â He gestured to his desk. âIâve actually had to get work done.â
Avery couldnât help a smile at that. âAs far as I can tell, Lisette is working on blending marriage traditions, but I donât know if you have anyone besides the two of us whoâs familiar with the traditions in Ensheren, or who I should speak to about implementing them.â
Solon snagged the list Lisette made out of Averyâs hands and spent a few quiet moments reading it. Avery let him and glanced around the room. It looked about the same as every other time heâd been in Solonâs rooms, except that his desk looked like it was being rapidly devoured by papers. And Solon looked the same, except that his hair had definitely had hands running through it, because the waves had gotten untamed and curled up at every angle.
Avery did his best not to stare as Solon read and then handed the list back to him. âNone of this should be complicated. Either your sister was making things easy for you, or she managed to tie herself up in knots about it from stress. I know the wedding is only in three weeks, but,â Solon stretched his arms wide, âweâre royalty. This wedding is a national holiday, and a sign of goodwill when your family arrives. Everyone is going to do everything possible to make it happen properly on short notice. Honestly, I could give that list to my secretary and it would be done before your sister comes back tomorrow.â
âLisette asked me to do it,â Avery said. âIâd like to see to it myself. I donât doubt your secretary, butâŚâ
Solon nodded once. âOf course. Jan is probably extremely busy as is. Heâs had enough to take care of with both of you here. So.â He reached back to the list and tapped the first item. âWe can take care of several of these things by talking to the priest. I havenât had a chance to show you the temple yet, but we have a nondenominational one in the palace. The priest who will be officiating the service works there, and she can refer us to someone who can help with how you do your vows to ensure we do both.â
âWe?â Avery asked.
âAvery, Iâm very tired of paperwork today. Let me with you, please. Anything to get moving.â
Avery laughed. âWell, I canât say no to the king.â
âYouâve said no to me three times in the last week,â Solon said, slinging an arm around Averyâs shoulders to steer him back out the door.
~~~~~~~~
Working out wedding details with Solon was much more nerve wracking that it had any right to be. It wasnât his wedding. But seeing Solon smile at him in the largest chapel Avery had ever seen near the altar while Avery repeated the same steps his sister would make to arrive before the priest and demonstrate taking Solonâs hands as she would Kaviâs, and then teaching the priest how to tie their hands together with his sisterâs sash wasâ
Well. Averyâs heart certainly got more of a workout than he would have if heâd gone sprinting for the same amount of time.
Fortunately, he didnât have to dance with Solon to set up room for the family dances Ensheren enjoyed to celebrate the unions. He didnât have to touch Solon while going over the most important menu items with their cook. And he didnât even have to make eye contact while sorting out who would be kneeling, who would be standing, and when.
They broke from the palace again to hurry over to see the priest from Ensheren. Alhamâs capital had a small immigrant population and traveling communityâit would get larger now that Lisette was married to Kaviâenough, at least to have a small district devoted to them and their own cultural buildings.
âI canât believe this place existed in your city and didnât take me here first,â Avery said as they settled into a carriage to head across the city. âWhat was that about trying to give me time to adjust slowly?â
âItâs not adjusting if you just insulate yourselves with your people, is it?â Solon asked. âBesides, it takes forever to get there. Do you think theyâll recognize you?â
âMaybe. If theyâve been home recently.â
âMmm. So youâve been at more of your official events than you like to pretend.â
âWell, I attend them,â Avery said. âI donât do much more than that.â
âMhm. Iâm sure.â
Avery kicked at Solonâs shin lightly and then turned red at the familiarity. Kavi did that. But Kavi was Solonâs brother. Avery just wanted the excuse to touch him.
âHey!â Solon said, breaking into laughter. âWhat was that for?â
âDonât sound so skeptical. Youâll see when my family gets here. Theyâll take over all the final details without me having to do anything.â
âAnd yet Lisette wants you next to her at the altar, not any of them.â
âWell, she only gets one,â Avery said, avoiding Solonâs eyes. âAnd I donât have another role to perform.â
âI donât think Max is her favorite brother,â Solon said. âThatâs all.â
âSheâs not even the one who asked me to come. The rest of our family sent me with her. They were very pushy about it.â
Solon sat up straighter in his seat. âOh. I didnât realize that.â
Avery shrugged. He didnât like thinking about it. Lisette hadnât picked him, and the rest of his family wanted him out of their way for weeks. It made sense, but it still stung. Avery had always done his best, if not to help, at least not cause problems for anyone.
He thought he was still succeeding. Solon liked him, at least. If he and Kavi hadnât both made it so clear that Solon never thought about romance, he would have even called it flirting. But a friendship with a king was no small thing.
Except when his sister was married to the crown prince of the same country. Then, a friendship didnât matter. And neither did Averyâs crush on him.
~~~~~~~~
The night before Avery and Lisetteâs parents and brothers arrived for the wedding, Alham held a celebration. It would last into the next days, to greet their new allies. It would last at least a week, even with the wedding festivities shortly after.
But the night before they arrived, they heralded the start of the holidays with fireworks.
Solon took Avery out of the palace to watch. He settled them on a patch of grass in a park heâd taken Avery to the first week heâd been there, high on the far edge of the city, with a view of the entire sprawl of buildings beneath them. Plenty of people had joined them to watch the show in the sky over the harbor, setting out blankets and picnic baskets.
âWhat about Kavi and Lisette?â Avery asked as he settled into one of the same blankets heâd borrowed his first day in Alham to sleep on Solonâs couch. He was wearing the same gold shirt he been given then under his favorite red coat, too.
âKavi is almost certainly going to take Lisette to the top towers in the palace to watch,â Solon said, unpacking the bag of snacks heâd brought with them. âItâs more private and closer to the fireworks. He likes it better. I think itâs more comfortable to watch fireworks up here.â
Avery hummed. He had to agree. Watching in the palace seemed fancy. Exclusive. But he was with everyone else in Alham who wanted to be there, with Solon at his side, and he could imagine Max wandering around making friends with everyone. Avery couldnât manage that sociableness, but he liked the idea of it.
It felt like where Avery belonged.
Lisette would like the privacy, though. Sheâd never gotten much, as the only princess of Ensheren. Avery could blend in better among their brothers.
âIs Kavi nervous?â he asked. âLisette is torn between nervous and excited. But like you said, everythingâs already official. This is just the party to celebrate it.â
âYou know, I actually donât think he is,â Solon said, settling onto the blanket next to Avery and folding his legs so he could rest his arms on his knees. âBut heâs never been the type for nerves.â
âLucky him.â
Solon laughed much louder than Averyâs muttered aside deserved. âI know. Iâve always been jealous. He would have been better at being king than I was, but that wasnât how the votes went.â
âThey get to design your job to your strengths, donât they?â Avery said. âYours were what they wanted, not Kaviâs.â
Solon raised an eyebrow and gave Avery the same once over he had when they first met. Avery felt his cheeks go as pink as they did the first day, too, but the sky was almost dark enough that he could believe Solon didnât see it this time. âAnd what are my strengths, Avery? Why would they pick me over Kavi?â
Avery went redder, and this time he knew Solon saw it because his grin widened. âYouâŚyouâre thoughtful. You know everything about this city, at least, and you can tell me anything about your country any time I have a question about anything. You know how to solve problems, more neatly than I ever would. You know exactly who to ask for help and how. Who wouldnât want you to be in charge?â
Solonâs mouth fell open and for a brief moment, he was visibly speechless. Then he looked away, swallowed, and recovered enough to say, âThank you. Thatâs quite the compliment.â
Before Avery had to think of something else to say to that, the first explosion overhead broke. He turned in unison with Solon and every other person in the park with them toward the sparks of light breaking up the dark sky over the harbor.
Avery had always liked fireworks. Heâd though of them as pretty things as a kid, like the paintings on his wall, but when heâd asked how to make them, the chemistry of it had overwhelmed him until heâd given up understanding.
They were magic. Made by talented, clever people with a purpose. And the purpose was to make people happy.
Solon edged closer as the show went on and the air cooled. Avery tightened his jacket around him and leaned closer to Solonâs warm skin.
And he stayed there after the last firework went off and those around them started to pack up and leave, his eyes on the sky. Until Solon shifted close enough to jostle Averyâs shoulder and Avery turned with an apology in his throat for waiting too long after the fireworks were done to help pack things up and leave.
But Solon wasnât trying to pack up their blankets. He was staring at Avery, his eyes unreadable in the dark, his mouth soft and open.
Averyâs eyes drifted to the shadows playing on Solonâs face from the few lamps in their park that had slowly started being relit now that the fireworks were over. Drifted down to his mouth and stared at it, listing forward the way he had the first day they met and he was unstable and ill and Solon was the only thing keeping him upright.
âAvery,â Solon said, his voice soft, and Avery jolted upright, shaking himself. Heâd been about to kiss Solon. Solon, who wasnât interested in any of that. Solon, who was absolutely not an option for any of a hundred other reasonsâstarting with the fact that their siblings were married and there was no point. If Solon was going to get married, it would have to be to someone useful.
Solon startled himself as Avery set into action and stood, and he slowly started packing their things up as if heâd just woken from a dream.
Or a nightmare.
Avery avoided Solon the next morning. And the next afternoon. And it was easy to do it at first, with the chaos of preparing for far more royal guests than Lisette or Avery themselves represented. Avery managed to keep well out of his way all the way up until it was time to have dinner with his parents and brothers, and Lisette, Kavi, and Solon, and Solonâs mother.
Solon caught him on the way to the proper dining hallâSolonâs room wouldnât fit so many people for dinnerâand stopped him with a hand to his arm. âAvery! I expected to see you around today. Where have you been?â
âIâve been around,â Avery said, looking away immediately. âItâs easy not to notice when thereâs so many of us.â
âExcept that I was looking for you, specifically, not a prince from Ensheren,â Solon said. âAnd youâve not been around at all. Are you avoiding your family?â
âWhat? No, nothing like that.â
âThen what happened?â
âI just think too much has been happening,â Avery said. âThereâve been so many people to help adjust.â
There was a pained sound to their side, and Avery and Solon both turned to see Kavi with Lisette on his arm further down the hallway. Kavi dropped Lisetteâs arm and stepped forward, grabbing Averyâs hand with his arm.
âAvery,â he said, âmy brother is bad at this. He has no practice, because heâs never wanted to do this before. But he is trying to find out if you want to stay here in Alham. Heâs spent the last six weeks trying to convince you to stay, hoping youâd fall in love with the country, so he could keep you around.â
Solonâs face turned redder with every word from his brother. But he didnât argue or protest any of it.
âWill youâplease, Avery, just put my brother out of his misery and tell him if youâre going to stay or not. Before dinner, please. I canât imagine having to sit through an entire meal with the two of you so awkward around each other.â
Lisette tugged on her husbandâs arm. âWe should leave them be,â she said. âAvery, donât come to dinner until youâre done talking to Solon about this. Please.â
âLiseââ
But she didnât stop, and she and Kavi had turned the corner before Avery could even finish her name, leaving him alone again with Solon.
Avery turned back to Solon, unsure what to say after that. âUm.â
âIâuh.â
They stared at each other in awkward silence for a long moment before Solon finally broke it again. âSo? Are you willing to stay? Here? Even after your parents leave?â
âYouâŚyou really want me to?â
Solon grabbed for Averyâs hands and took them in both of his. âAvery. Iâve liked you from the moment I met you. I didnât even know I could like someone the way I like you. But youâre not useless, and youâre not unwanted. You care. You want to know everything about everyone, and you want to do your best to help. Maybeâmaybe starting over somewhere without the expectations and your siblings taking care of so much will make it easier for you to find something to do here. Youâve always wanted to date men, havenât you? Spend your life with one? And your parents and siblings all pushed you to come here, where thatâsâŚ.where you can do that. They like you, Averyâyouâve never once said you donât get along with them. And they wanted you to come here, where they wouldnât be hanging over your head andâand maybe you could marry someone if you wanted.â
Avery blinked, then looked down at their hands. âYou really think thatâs what they were trying to do?â
âSo much so that I asked Lisette about it, and she turned pink the same way you do when you get caught. She asked if I was trying to keep you.â
Avery ducked his head against a growing smile. He could see Lisette asking that. Could see her hoping for that. âIf youâve wanted me to fall in love with Alham, youâve succeeded. And ifâŚ.if you wanted me to fall in love with you, thenâŚwellâŚitâs still early. But I think youâre succeeding there, too.â
Solonâs face brightened like the sun and his smile could have cracked his face in half. âSo youâll stay?â
âIâll have to talk to my parents about it,â Avery said, worming his hands out of Solonâs to rest them on his shoulders. âBut if youâre right, I think theyâll be happy for me to stay here. Especially if we have a treaty and theyâll have someone to take care of Lisette.â
âAnd Lisette can take care of you,â Solon said, tucking his hands around Averyâs waist.
âMmm,â Avery agreed, a grin growing across his face. âNow if you want me to stay, Your Majesty, perhaps you should start proving it with a kiss?â
Solonâs hands tightened as he jolted in surprise, and he met Avery halfway.
Been getting into Neopets again, so may I request your thoughts on the ghost color please?
Itâs so simple, but I love the absolute HAUNTED expression that a good amount of the pets get when painted :D
Ghost is one of those very old colours that kind of suffers for its age, because it's... kind of boring? The concept is great, and I do like the way all ghost pets turn the same shade of teal with red eyesâit's very consistent both in terms of the colour itself and in terms of things like NPC characters and whatnot. I also like how the pets' expressions become more sad and spooky.
However, the execution beyond that tends to be lacking, as that's literally all there is to the colour beyond just a faint glow. You'd think that they'd make the pets semi-transparent, give them tails or wispy elements, stuff like that, but instead every pet is just "teal base with red eyes, glow, spooky expression". It's not terrible or anything, and once again it has a lot to do with how old the colour is, but it does feel pretty underwhelming.
You might think some of the blandness was caused by customization, but even pre-customization all the ghost pets were just drawn in their default poses. Sometimes the old art would give them a more exaggerated expression, but beyond that, they were still pretty boring.
However, just this year TNT released a bunch of "eerie" styles for this color with actual unique poses, and I have to say, these are a lot better. The dynamic Halloween styles they did were pretty good as a whole, but they also didn't feel all that necessary. These ones definitely were, as they don't just give the pets unique poses, but also take advantage of the new art to give them wispier, more ethereal appearances. Sure, most of them were sampled from art already on the site (the Flotsam above is based off a user shopkeeper), but if it works, it works. This does mean the styles are pretty inconsistent with the original art and expressions and aren't always on-point in terms of linework and whatnot, but there was so little there to begin with I can't imagine anyone complaining.
Favorite Species:
Techo: The Techo is a really good example of a pet design getting better over time. The pre-conversion art was literally just the default Techoâit didn't even have a different expression. Come customization, and they at least tweaked it to have smaller pupils and eye bags, which combined with the new art looking less overjoyed by default at least gave it a fun personality. Finally, with the eerie style, they redrew it to have what can only be described as a completely zoinked-out expression with irises around the pupils. It also now sports a floating pose with great shapes and flow, and some creative choices like more wispy elements and a complete lack of legs. It's really good.
Usul: The ghost Usul was always a bit unusual in that even pre-customization it always had flowing, raggedy ears and a slightly ruffled tail to matchâa unique attribute that I really wish they had applied to more ghost pets with manes and long fur. With customization, the design actually got a bit worseâthe eye bags were lost, it kept the same generic expression, and the tail didn't match the ears as much. However, with the new style, they fixed that completely; ears and tail now match perfectly and even the mane has been given the same ethereal look, with the pose and expression really standing out.
Hissi: This one's kind of cheating as I usually try to aim for pets that have both a good default base and a good style. The post-customization ghost Hissi, however, is as bland as can beâeven the pre-customization ghost Hissi was absolutely nothing. However, the style is really good. I love the pose and the grabby hands, and the way big chunks are taken out of the body in an almost Wraith-like way.
Least Favorite Species:
Grundo: There are, strictly speaking, uglier species to pick from (pets with a lot of yellow, like the Tonu or Kiko, really don't work), but the Grundo gets this spot for being the blandest of the bland. Not only is there nothing interesting or unique about the design post- or pre-customization, but it doesn't even have a fun expression. In fact, it doesn't even have different eyes from a regular Grundo, because Grundo eyes are solid red by default, thus making it just look completely normal. Hopefully we'll get a style for this one one day that gives it something unique to work with.
To preface, I'm not trying to change your opinion or anything, but really this seems like an interesting potential for discussion on my take of how TLQ is represented:
I don't like the idea of TLQ realizing anything about gender norms, really. they are an existential god being, and I'm pretty sure that puts them above gender and physical sex in nature, placing them at a nonbinary standpoint. the choice to depict them as male is merely because TLQ sees it's other half as a princess, I believe, and for the sake of the story, that's what they become.
when they deny their godhood, they give up that rejection of the material to choose a path that neither thought possible. leaving together, as them. not as the gods they were, but the people they became.
arbitrarily saying "TLQ realising they are female" while an interesting story, undermines the premise that you, as TLQ, are not a self perceptive person. TLQ cannot see himself, in the game. ever. always shrouded in darkness, and the mirror of that self reflection illudes them.
it also undermines the point of the Narrator. in that they tell you what is and what isn't. whether you choose to listen or not is out of the question; you can only respond to what the narrator says. the point Is that they set the scene.
it also misses the parallel where the lines between hero and monster are blurred, in that TLQ is something similar to a Kenku of some kind, and clearly not human. you can be considered a monster. but you're told you're the hero. that you'll save the world. but the act you must commit is the common act of a monster in fiction. murder. of a helpless princess, no less. you are put into a literal grey area, and you define that grey area by shaping the shades with your choices. or to paint it over with the only color you'll see in game... blood. (monochromes can be argued as colors, but for the sake of impact...)
TLQ as a god: a they, because they go beyond such concepts. (this even may be stretching it, but TLQ originated as a concept, not a being, so I can say for certain that concepts are not bound by sex or gender.)
The Shifting Mound: a they, because they are many. (despite being clearly feminine, a group of people is referred to by They/Them to address.)
TLQ as a person: a Man, to fulfill their self perception of the story, one that the narrator states he has no control over, and is in fact, just reading out what happens so that TLQ can see and interact. the Narrator merely acts as eyes to the internal window of TLQ. TLQ sees himself as a hero, which is why that particular voice is ALWAYS present from the beginning. because the voices come about based on how TLQ perceives himself, actively or passively. this is why you get voice of the cold when you hesitate but still go through with slaying the princess. the cold would not hesitate, but in self reflection your actions as TLQ are percieve as cold.
to summarize as best as I can:
TLQ has no reason to question who they are. they were once a sexless genderless (maidenless) concept. when given form, the world they chose to make put them in the shoes of the hero. the Narrator puts you in the shoes of a monster framed as a hero. your beloved is a princess to you, signifying her importance in your existence, and also her helplessness by having her be chained in a basement.
to say they perceive themselves as male is perhaps something derived exclusively from the fact that their lover is a princess, and in the stereotypical "hero saves princess" stories, as TLQ perceives their world, obviously, have male knights saving princesses, plus the male voices.
I would like to think, just by the Voice of the Hero being a default, you are cleared as Male.
and as a god, you are nothing but a genderless concept.
but overall, it's a creative idea, especially if you think about it from the lens of having Multi-sex voices in their head, both male and female, due to their previous status as a concept.
I do not want to piss in your cheerios, as I find the concept you presented amusing. but I felt the absolutely nerdly-geeky desire to start a philosophical debate on sex and gods.
not just does the game not have to be about romantic love in particular, TLQ also doesn't have to be a man. Let me explain.
When you first start the game, you are greeted first with the voice of the Narrator, who is a man. Then afterwards we meet the hero, who is voiced by the same VA / has the same voice /gender presentation as the Narrator. Then you meet the princess, who is your only other external being in the story until the end.
Given that this is TLQ waking up, they probably conceptualise "voices" as men and "external beings" as women, simply due to the fact that the Narrator presents masculine and he sets that standard just by being the first character TLQ meets.
I wish there was a story about TLQ realising she and the voices have a different genders. Maybe TLQ thinking of herself as fem only to realise her body is male later down the line. Or maybe a funny bit about the voices all having their own masculine bodies they are comfortable in and TLQ, who is obviously a woman, being all like "Why are you acting like this I'm totally the same as you guys" with the others just slowly shaking their heads going "Idk pal..."
Non binary interpretations are also really cool! I love them, though I do have to say transfem headcanons (or just fem protags in general) are my favourites.
I wanna elaborate on some of these really quick so let me ramble đđť
1) loves oatmeal specifically WITH cinnamon and raisins in it. And it can't be too runny or too thick and it can't be cold and she has to use her favorite spoon when she makes it because it's her favorite food and so they go together right?
2) only likes a very specific shade of yellow. She likes the super pastel yellow that's the same color of the hairclips Pandora puts in her hair. It's the best yellow to her because it's not too bright and it doesn't pop out/scream at her but it still gives off that happy warmth vibe that she literally embodies and I love her so much oh my god
3) she only likes potions when it's taught by Slughorn. After Hogwarts, she considers going into something with potion-making involved, so she goes to classes for super complex shit that she didn't learn in school. But she can't stand it. For a while she can't figure out why, because she's always had an affinity for this sort of thing, always loved it, etc, etc. But then she realizes that it's the professor. He's short-tempered. Stern. He doesn't negotiate. And Lily, having grown up with Petunia andâthough she never really wanted to admit itâhaving needed "accommodations" her whole life, especially in school, loathes this. She misses Sluggy, who was more of the clumsy, warm, grandfather figure who passed out lemon drops and was never on time.
4) her literal obsession with ABBA has gotten out of hand. She has all the album records in her little display case in her room and she puts them on her record player while she gets ready. She has posters. She sketches little drawings. She's gone to some concerts. She LOVESSS them. She's like a Swiftie but with ABBA.
And now I'd like to add a few more things.
1) loves Eskimo kisses. They're her favorite thing. She does them with Pandora all the timeâsometimes even Reggie, because God can strike me down if they're not close like that. And sometimes Pandora will kiss all over her face, her lips touching every little freckle. And she loves when she kisses her temple. (AHHHH THEY'RE SO CUTE I LOVE THEM) and whenever Lily is feeling insecure, Pandora will lay down in bed with her and ask "what do you not like about your body, baby?" and then Lily will give her answer and Pandora will literally just worship that part of her with kisses, massages, affirmations, anything really, to make her feel better. And then she'll make her her favorite tea.
2) looks good in anything. I feel like Lily wouldn't really have a specific style. Her closet is a mess of goth and hippie and clean girl and softie and kawaii and flannel obsessed lesbian and emo and scene and she looks amazing in ALL OF IT. Lily Evans changes her aesthetic day to day and does it like a fucking queen boss bitch. The only thing about clothes is that they always have to be the right material and her favorite fabric and she always has to be wearing either compression socks or those fuzzy socks you get at Christmas. If the heels on the socks are colored differently than the rest of the sock then the heel has to perfectly line up with her own heel but also still be tight enough so that she doesn't feel the need to pull them up all the time.
3) LOVES bugs. Anything bug related and she's on it. It's one of her special interests. She has posters of all the different beetle species and she has an ant farm/terrarium thing on her shelf and half of her clothes are covered in butterflies and she's named all of the dragonflies that land in her garden. She's besties with the cicadas. (She used magic on them to make them talk because she's one of the brightest witches of her age and she's just like that)
5) her middle name is Jane. That's all I have to say.
Thank you for listening to my ramblings đ
My Lily Evans hcs!
