A lesson on vocabulary for kids

I started doing this because i was sick of seeing people accusing others (including me) of committing heinous crimes for enjoying fictional stuff, but i actually think it is important to take all this into account, because not knowing what a word actually means can lead to dangerous misleading. If you don't know what grooming is, for example, you can think you're safe when you're, in fact, being groomed.

Some of these terms are fandom ones, and others are used in fandom but not exclusively.

This is a long list and i'm sure there's a lot i forgot, so anyone can feel free to add more.

-Fetish: a sexual interest on something that isn't sexual in itself or a body part that is not a sexual organ.

-Fetishizing: stripping something or someone of every dimension except the sexual one. Turning it/them into a sexual object.

-What is not fetishizing: acknowledging or enjoying the (possible) sexual aspect of a fictional relationship.

-Pedophilia: sexual attraction towards prepubescent children. Said children need to be real (not drawings) and actually prepubescent (ie a teen actor portraying a prepubescent character is still a teen, not prepubescent). The person feeling said attraction needs to be at least 5 years older than the object of said attraction.

-What is not pedophilia: enjoying a fictional ship, whatever the ages and/or age gap between the characters themselves or between the characters and the shipper.

-What is also not pedophilia: acknowledging teens can have a sexual drive, feel sexual attraction and/or have sex. Regardless of your age. Also liking that said teen sex drive/attraction/action is depicted in a story with fictional characters or depicting it yourself.

-What is also not pedophilia: CSA and CSEM. Pedophilia in itself is not abuse because it is not action. Of course it's still dangerous because it can drive to harmful action.

-CSA: child sexual abuse. Again, for something to be CSA, both the child and the abuser need to be real. Portraying it in fiction is not actual abuse. It can, however, trigger people and it should always be properly tagged. Somebody choosing to depict it in fiction isn't bad, but it's a really hard topic to read or see, and it's important that people can choose if they want to read or see it.

-CSEM: child sexual exploitation material. A better name for what is usually called child porn, because it takes the attention from the sexual enjoyment porn usually implies and puts it on the children exploitation and abuse.

-What is not CSEM: drawings or fiction writings of fictional children or teens in sexual situations. In order to consider something CSEM there have to be real children being actually abused, which means no drawing or fiction writing ever can be considered CSEM. Then again, they can also trigger people and should also be properly tagged.

-Grooming: setting the stage for abusing someone. The predator builds trust by giving gifts and/or favours, and then alienates the victim from their social circle and especially their caretakers, if they have them, to then build a relationship based on dependency. While it's use is mostly referring to sexual abuse of children, there are a lot of other situations of grooming.

-What is not grooming: an adult befriending a child.

-What is also not grooming: an adult acknowledging that teens can have sexual drive.

-Incest: romantic and/or sexual relationships between relatives. Like most topics mentioned here, it can trigger people and it should be properly tagged.

-What is not incest: romantic and/or sexual relationships between people who are not relatives. Yes, this includes the Asian concept of "sworn brothers", which doesn't mean the people or characters see each other as actual brothers, and any kind of friends, even if they themselves say they're like family.

-Anti/Anti-shipper: a person who thinks if you like dark topics in fiction, that makes you a bad person in real life (especially related to pairings and very especially when said dark topics are sexual) and will do anything in their power to make you "pay for it", including harassment, death threats, doxxing and petitions to kill yourself among other things. They also usually organize themselves and their friend groups are dangerously similar to cults.

-What is not an anti: somebody who doesn't like dark topics in fiction. Or somebody who thinks some things like incest or big age gaps pairings shouldn't be shipped. That is just having opinions.

-Pro-shipper: a person who thinks what you like in fiction doesn't effect your ethics as a person. This doesn't mean all pro-shippers are good people. There are infinite ways of being an asshole.

-What is not a pro-shipper: somebody who ships "problematic" pairings. That can be a pro-shipper, but not necessarily.

-Good-looking, pretty, handsome, beautiful: adjectives used to describe somebody who is pleasant to look at.

-What is not good-looking, pretty, handsome, beautiful: adjectives used to say you're sexually attracted to somebody.

-Minor: a real person who is not legally an adult. This means they aren't legally responsible of themselves and their actions and decisions. The usual age of majority is 18, but it's not the same in all countries or regions (for example, 16 in Scotland or 19 in South Korea).

-What is not a minor: a fictional character under 18. This is because "minor" is a legal term and that means it applies to actual people. A character can be a minor in their own universe, of course, but no real world law applies to fictional characters.

-What is also not a minor: a person under the age of sexual consent. In this case, it's in the "this is not what the word means" sense, because in most places the age of consent is a minor age (between 13 and 16 in most of the world).

Other interesting data for you kids

-Telling people to "get help" because they ship the "wrong ships" is stupid. A lot of the time these people already have help. In fact, psychologists agree that writing, reading, drawing etc, dark fiction is an excellent and healthy coping method.

-The proshipper idea isn't that fiction doesn't effect reality. Fiction does effect reality. That's why women, poc, queer people etc, insist in the importance of representation in fiction. What we say is that that effect isn't 1:1. What we say is that reading a work of fiction depicting some kind of abuse won't turn anybody into an abuser. It's exactly the same as saying that videogames don't make people violent. It's the same principle and it's been proved beyond any doubt.

-"Problematic" fiction is only dangerous if you can't separate fiction from reality. And if you can't separate fiction from reality, you are not fit to read fiction unsupervised. There can be different reasons for you to not be able to separate fiction from reality, it's not something to be ashamed of. But it means you need help in that regard, if you want to engage with fiction.

-If anti groups had actually good intentions about fiction, they would make campaigns against a lot of books and famous authors that do depict the stuff they say is so harmful and makes you so dangerous. They mostly don't. They only make hate campaigns against fanartists and authors with a small audience, whose works will reach thousands of times less people than, say, Nabokov's Lolita, and who don't have an army of attorneys to sue anybody who slanders them. They always target weaker people. And that's because what they actually want is not to help or protect anybody. What they actually want is just a power trip.

-Yes, accusing anybody of pedophilia, grooming or any other kind of abuse over the fiction they consume or create is slander. And yes, it's a crime.

-On the same note, sending death threats, doxxing, asking people to kill themselves, and other stuff antis usually do, are crimes too. And this doesn't depend on the victim's moral compass. Laws never say "this is illegal unless you think your victim deserves it".

-Not everybody has exactly the same morals. Some people think it's okay to have sex with multiple people at the same time, some people don't. Some people think it's okay to write a rape fantasy between fictional characters, some people don't. As long as you don't hurt real people, you're entitled to your opinions.

-If you open a fic that's properly tagged with warnings, read it and get upset, you brought it upon yourself. It's not the author of the fic who hurt you. It was you who stepped over your own boundaries. You have no right to attack the author when you disrespected yourself.

-Wanting fiction that doesn't cater to your exact needs and wants to disappear is ridiculous. And a waste of time and energy, because it's just not gonna happen.

-If you're unable to curate your own internet experience, that doesn't mean the rest of internet users need to adjust to you. It means you shouldn't be using internet unsupervised.

-Social networks are not safe spaces for kids. Internet itself is not a safe space for kids. There is a reason why most social networks have a minimum age to be allowed to have an account, and it's because they are not safe for kids. They might look like they are because most of them ban sexual content, but they're still dangerous because sexual content itself was not the danger to begin with. Really, if you don't know how to keep yourself safe in internet, either get somebody to do it for you, or don't use internet. For your own safety.

Pursuit Post Mortem

If there was further development on Pursuit, I would definitely introduce more elements of danger such as obstacles that come from different directions as right now there is no point in moving up and down which is a real missed opportunity as it makes the player think in a whole other dimension in addition to the slow mechanic.

I would also slow down the game more, right now it goes from too slow to way too fast really quickly and kind of misses that sweet spot necessary for fiero. If I could tweak the values more I would give the player more time for time slow (as it allows for creative ways to evade obstacles) and I would figure out where players are most focused and engaged.

Additionally, the free flow movement felt either sluggish or too fast and I could never find a perfect middle ground that would allow the player to feel like they have complete control. Something better I believe (and many of my friends that playtested suggested this) would be movement that snaps between columns as it allows for instant gratification and the player cannot overshoot where they want to go as it simplifies it down to pressing the key once in order to evade something (this was done in the Muffet boss fight in undertale and worked quite well). This made for a more enjoyable experience when I implemented it. Also, I made it so the laser would only kill the player if they were in the column when it struck instead of the entire time (even if it was tweening away). As this caused confusion in players seeing as most other games with laser mechanics have them be single bursts of damage and not linger. Another feature to add to the laser would be to have set patterns for when there are two of them. this will result in them being not as random and allows the player to recognise the patterns and be able to act accordingly, this was mentioned in Week 2's lecture as it is good to have randomness but not too much as it creates a chaotic environment that the player cannot anticipate.

A highscore page was also added in after the player dies, this shows what score they got on that run and the highest score they've achieved since running the game.

Patricia Highsmith: The problem of good art made by bad people

No writer would ever betray his secret life. It would be like standing naked in public.

- Patricia Highsmith, the novelist writing to a friend in 1940

Patricia Highsmith, who died in 1995 having written a series of psychological thrillers, including The Talented Mr Ripley and Strangers on a Train and the romance The Price of Salt, left two sets of diaries hidden in a linen closet in her home in Ticino, Switzerland.

In one she recorded details about her professional life: plot ideas, philosophical musings and thoughts on writing. In the other she documented her private reflections and memories, including a single sexual encounter with the writer Arthur Koestler (a “miserable, joyless episode”) and her efforts, through psychotherapy, to “get myself into a condition to be married”.

She had no more compassion for men than she did for women. In one entry Highsmith writes that “the American male does not know what to do with a girl once he has her. He is not really depressed or inhibited by his inherited or environmentally conceived Puritan restraints: he simply has no goal within the sexual situation”.

Highsmith’s diaries, which run to more than 8,000 pages, have been pored over by biographers, but have never before been made public, or in this case interwoven into a single narrative of the life of a complex woman who thought deeply about themes of good and evil, loneliness and intimacy.

It was in her diary that she described becoming sexually obsessed with a customer at Bloomingdale’s in New York, whom she later followed to her home, provoking observations about murder and love.

She had an obsession about detailing absolutely everything in her life, very much like Sylvia Plath. And she drew on the diaries for her novels, which explore the notion of obsession, guilt and murder, and reject rationality and logic for the darker elements of human personality.” Dubbed “the poet of apprehension“ by the novelist Graham Greene, who said she “created a world without moral endings … Nothing is certain when we have crossed this frontier”, the Texas-born Highsmith was deeply influenced by European existentialists such as Albert Camus and Søren Kierkegaard, and those influences are deeply felt in her diaries.

She was a lesbian who hated women, totally politically incorrect in lots of ways, and certainly not a poster girl for the feminist movement. She hated blacks, Jews, men, and women. A sort of equal opportunities hater then. In mitigation Highsmith was self aware of her own beliefs and it mortified her and was a source of constant anxiety. She herself was fighting many demons including her mother’s rejection, an attempted seduction by her father as a child, and being sexually abused by two travelling salesmen. She had a tough life.

But there is a question over how far Highsmith can now be assimilated into contemporary culture of ‘wokeness’ and ‘MeToo’.

There is no question in person she could be a monstrous, violent and quite unpleasant woman. Knowing about her life and views could for some make it difficult to read her works. But for all that I think the diaries’ publication could help to again reveal that, contrary to popular imagination, creativity is not necessarily rooted in our best instincts.

These same highly culturally charged debates raged around the controversial French writer Celine in France. In Germany Wagner continues to be a touchy issue. Or back again in France, the recent controversy at the Césars where many people walked out as child minor rapist Roman Polanski was honoured for his latest film.

Going further back Gaugin was a pedophile. Degas was an anti-Semite. Caravaggio killed a man. Where do you draw the line? When do you draw the line?

Some argue art cannot be good or evil. Only the artist can. What he/she presents as art is a different dimension of thinking and somehow not really representative of the artist. I’m not entirely convinced by that argument. If only because great art is never transmitted through an empty vessel but is actively germinated through the life experiences of the artist. But also more importantly most artists don’t separate themselves from their art as they are convinced their art comes from the deepest depths of their being.

We don’t have to be puritans to acknowledge that some henious actions deserve more consideration than historically allotted to a consideration of the artist and his/her works.

But those who are ‘woke’ liberal left activists arguably seem to be advocating a one size that fits all approach. There is no wriggle room for discourse correction or allowing nuance to inform the conversation. And I use the word ‘conversation’ deliberately because such things are nearly always being worked out in real time and also each one of us ascribe different values to different things e.g. Picasso cheats on his lovers and so I don’t like his art, whilst others would say, so what? Grow up. There is a serious slippery slope that if you eliminate the bad artist and writer from the canon and you might as well eliminate art and literature itself. And that’s where we might well end up.

I believe that adjusting personal behaviour seems much easier than enforcing an interpretative cultural lens on a shifting audience and telling them this is how you should enjoy art.

I personally believe it’s a matter of personal conscience and conviction. If you’ve really searched your heart, and found that a piece of art is just that important to you, as many people do without admitting it out loud, then it should be fine to engage with it. But the imperative now is to privately think about why it matters to you. If I can justify that to myself then yes, I will go ahead and ‘enjoy’ that piece of art regardless of how much of a shit the artist was or is.

To me it’s not a question of compartmentalising, of ignoring or suspending my disgust with an artist's personal behaviour so as to concentrate on the art. I'm watching and reading because I expect art to be about moral dangers in a way that is less didactic than essays are. I expect art to be troubling because I expect people to be troubling. I am prepared to like and dislike something in every work. I can also appreciate the aesthetic genius of a moral monster without feeling that I am becoming inured to monstrosity.

For this reason when I for example look at  Benvenuto Cellini, creator of Perseus With the Head of Medusa, was a murderer and a rapist. He killed at least two men and was accused by a model of sexually assaulting her. This does not stop me from looking with great amazement and curiosity at the naked and sexual Perseus With the Head of the Medusa. The knowledge of the immorality of the creator does not distract from my enjoyment of his creation; indeed I am made even more curious to know how beauty is perceived by a violently troubled man.

In the end for me, and I can only speak for myself, contrary to popular imagination, creativity is not necessarily rooted in our best instincts. Nietzsche said, “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” I like that.

A human creature born abnormally, inhumanly sensitive. To the artist, to paraphrase Pearl S. Buck, a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death. Add to this a cruel overpowering necessity to create - so that without the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings or something of meaning, his very breath is cut off from him. He must create, must pour out creation. By some strange, unknown, inward urgency he is not really alive unless he is creating. 

In Patricia Highsmith’s case it’s revealing she said once in a sly backhanded way, “My New Year’s Eve Toast: to all the devils, lusts, passions, greeds, envies, loves, hates, strange desires, enemies ghostly and real, the army of memories, with which I do battle — may they never give me peace.” A true great artist never know really knows peace or contentment for this is the price of creation. The intensity of personal turmoil is the fuel of their creativity.

The Greeks may have believed that they had “muses” whispering ideas in their ears. Or that the Romans believed they wrote with their “genius”. But I suspect the best artists are those that are in touch with and confront their humanity, at their best and at their worst.

yay! okay this is literally just copy/pasted from my doc for this fic (about 2k), so the plot probably won’t be obvious but hopefully it’s still enjoyable to read! i just don’t think i’m ever gonna finish it because i never finished good omens

without further ado...

take it up with the badlands

summary: If he wants her to stay, he’ll have to fight those who shaped the universe. And they could, he knows. He is an immortal demon, no longer bent to the will of heaven or hell. She is the Bad Wolf, Goddess of Time and Space, capable of feats even he can barely imagine. That’s not even in question. The question is: would she ever actually want to stay with him?

Deep down, Crowley knows the answer. And it’s not a happy one. 

The white haired man looks her up and down, a mask of evaluation on his face, before grimacing in distaste. “Oh, I suppose I know why you’re here,” he announces when he has finished deducing. “Wish you people would leave him alone,” he adds under his breath.

Rose just smiles, playing along. Maybe the man this man speaks of is someone who can help her - the reason Bad Wolf sent her here. “Sorry, can I just wait for him here, then?” She twists one of the hoops in her ears, giving the bookseller a bright grin.

Instead of looking reassured, the gentleman looks even more unsettled.

“I've been working on this top secret project for years now,” she tells them. “The Dimension Cannon - supposed to get me back to my proper universe. Only, someone noticed I wasn’t aging that quick, so they somehow got my blood from my files and ran some tests. Still don’t know what they found, but a couple days later my stepdad was deposed. He only had the resources to get my mum and my little brother to a safe house before they killed him.” She swallows hard. “I was tortured for about four months.”

Aziraphale murmurs a sympathetic “oh dear!” but makes no move to comfort her. Crowley tries to refrain from rolling his eyes: angels have a great sense of empathy, but really know shit about showing it.

“Anyway, I escaped. Been on the run for a month or so - saw something in your window that made me think this was a safe place.” Something in her eyes tells Crowley that she won’t tell them what it was, not yet. “I figure something about this universe makes me age slower, but they thought I was alien. After all the crazy shit that’s happened in the last decade, they felt betrayed, I guess.”

Crowley shrugs. “You are, though.”

Rose starts. “What?”

“You’re an alien,” Crowley clarifies unhelpfully.

Aziraphale takes over. “What Crowley is trying to say, my dear, is that you are neither angel nor demon, but you are an immortal. Quite a powerful one, I sense.”

Rose’s jaw nearly hits the floor. 

-

“Well, love,” Crowley drawls, “seeing as you’re probably going to be here awhile, you might as well come for drinks.” He drapes a loose arm over her shoulder, leading her out the door as Aziraphale closes up shop behind them.

“Are you tempting right now?” Rose teases, but he can see the shock and pain that still hide behind those golden eyes. Crowley’s never had mortal attachments, and he’s not the type to be empathetic, but he still acknowledges that it must be difficult. He’s only known this newly immortal human for an hour, but he can already see how strong she is. “‘Cause I’d rather have a friend,” she admits.

Crowley, thankfully, is saved from responding by Aziraphale’s gentle hand on Rose’s shoulder. “Ah, my dear, I’m quite sure we’ll get along splendidly! My demon friend here is slower to trust, but he’ll come around.”

“Oi, right here,” Crowley grumbles, but he manages a soft smirk at Rose as they stride off to their favorite bar. He’ll get to the bottom of this anomaly if it kills him.

To Crowley, Rose is a walking contradiction.

She has a dark sense of humor and a penchant for danger and trouble, with a generally mischievous air that Crowley has always associated with demons. Yet, her staunch sense of right and wrong and blinding optimism could only belong to an angel. Well, Aziraphale, at least. The rest of the lot are right bastards. 

And she’s so far out of the rest of the humans’ league that she might as well be in another universe.

From one, Crowley mentally corrects. Then he wonders when this little goddess-human prototype began to take up so much space in his conscious thought. The space usually reserved for good tea and terrorizing plants and tight jeans - now filled up with thoughts about Rose Tyler’s bright laugh and bad jokes and uncertain fate. 

-

“There’s something you’re not telling us, love,” Crowley observes.

“Yeah,” she admits, a soft blush blooming on her cheeks. “Well, I guess it doesn’t matter, does it? I trust you.” Crowley makes an impatient shooing motion with his hands. “Yeah, okay, so in my universe, I sort of absorbed the time vortex? Long story short, I controlled all of Time for a few minutes - the Doctor said I would’ve burned, but he took it out of me.” Rose shrugs. “Anyway, the torture I went through.. that’s how I discovered I can kinda… control it, I guess.”

“Control it?” Crowley leans forward into her space, taking his hands out of his pockets.

Rose gestures around. “It’d be easier if I showed you - Aziraphale, do you have anything in the shop you’re not attached to?”

Crowley nearly loses it at his friend’s offended and very concerned expression. Oh, this girl is only proving herself to be more and more precious. 

-

“You’re God, huh?” Rose knows, gazing intently at the shadowy figure in the corner of her dream.

The figure straightens, but Rose still can’t make out any singular feature. It’s a woman, surely, but nothing else. “Bad Wolf, you do not belong in this universe,” God says, and Rose rolls her eyes.

“Took ya kind of long to figure that out, yeah?” 

God shrugs. “We couldn’t decide where you fit in with the Plan. And now We’ve decided you don’t fit, so We are sending you back.”

Rose's heart jumps at these words. “Back?” she stutters, “to the Doctor?”

“That’s what you want, isn’t it?”

Rose squints at Her. “You’re not doing it out of the kindness of your heart though, are ya?” God is silent, and then Rose knows. “You’re afraid,” she realizes. “You’re afraid of the Big Bad Wolf.”

“We have no fear,” God says, but it is like She is shouting in Rose’s head.

Rose’s eyes flash gold. “I take your atoms…”

“ENOUGH.” 

Rose wakes sweaty and exhilarated to the sweetest sound she has ever heard. To the sound of the TARDIS. 

-

Crowley takes one look at the Doctor and the way he holds Rose’s hand, keeping her slightly behind him in a completely unnecessary protective stance that fires up Crowley’s indignation - he left her, he left her, he has no right to protect her - before shoving him up against the wall in a chokehold. If Rose hadn’t been panicking about the possibility of them killing each other, she would probably be a little turned on. The man she’s loved for years and the demon that made her smile again, both with the body and face of her dreams? It’s probably a good thing she’d only ever think about that possibility in hindsight. 

“I fell,” Crowley growls, “through ash and fire. All for pride. Rose Tyler, all annoyingly empathetic and stupidly optimistic and fucking brilliant that she is - she helped me find peace. And that makes things very simple. If you hurt her, if she feels one ounce of pain that you had it in your power to prevent, I will fall to God’s feet and beg forgiveness for my sins just to travel between universes and rain hellfire down upon you.” His words have the same, ancient feel to them as the Doctor’s, the same cadence as holy scripture, as absolute truth, and Rose shivers. His voice is so low and heated that when she steps close between them and lays a hand on his chest to push him off the Doctor, even she can barely hear it. “And I’m quite good at that,” he adds, smirking down at Rose, who shakes her head at him with a soft smile on her face. 

“It’s been a ride, gentlemen,” Rose says, sparing Aziraphale a friendly nod before gazing up at Crowley. “Thank you.” She rubs the fabric of the henley over Crowley’s heart, and he groans in frustration.

“C’mon, love,” he tries, “look at him! I’m sure I can give you at least twice as many orgasms.” Rose giggles, used to Crowley’s brand of humor, but doesn’t miss the sharp noise that the Doctor makes behind her. “I’ll make you see heaven,” he promises, but she can tell by his eyes that he already knows her answer.

The Doctor moves up behind her, twining an arm around her and pressing his palm to her stomach. “And with me, she’ll see stars,” his voice is low and dark, and Rose knows that they need to get onto the TARDIS before a full out brawl occurs in front of her. 

So she takes the Doctor’s hand from her stomach, pressing a kiss to the back of it before shooing him back to the TARDIS. He goes, but he watches Crowley with sharp eyes.

“You’re better than you believe, yeah?” she whispers to the demon in front of her, cupping his cheek gently. “If I was meant to be here, in this universe, I’d be the one to show it to you. So you just gotta get back out there and find this universe’s match for you. I know they’re out there.” Her eyes dart to Aziraphale for a moment, wondering if something might eventually come from that. There’s history there, and they have the rest of eternity to figure it out. “Rely on your best friend, yeah?” She adds, wondering if a hint could turn into a catalyst.

“Rose-” Crowley begins hoarsely, before Rose dives her fingers into his ginger hair and pulls his lips down to meet hers. 

It’s a soft, chaste peck, nothing like that drunken night, but the possibilities hit them both like a freight train. It���s not hard to imagine their endless days: going for drinks with Aziraphale, lounging at his bookshop, Rose following his angry rants at his plants with a soft touch to their leaves, Crowley tempting ordinary humans into sin and Rose tempting Crowley into bed. In fact, it’s easy, and when Rose feels the hint of tears at the corners of her eyes, she pulls away. “Bye, love,” she murmurs, borrowing his nickname before giving him a quick squeeze. His arms don’t have time to come around her before she is walking back to the Doctor, who brushes his lips against her forehead before she walks past him and into the TARDIS. 

Crowley ignores the lump in his throat, but before he can walk away, a low tenor stops him. 

“I’m the last of my kind,” the Doctor is saying, eyes dark and intent. “I’m the killer of my kind. I’ve spent my life trying to do the best thing for the universe, but rest assured, I’ll now be doing the best thing for Rose. Forever.”

Me Going Through Star Vs Tv Tropes

So while Tv tropes is a fan thing similar to the Star vs Wiki and is imperfect in many ways. i was curious to check it out and see what had been put there for some aspects i was interested in in terms of the show.

And boy, is it interesting.

I checked out cleaved first because i heard so much about how this page was outright going on about how much the finale messed up, and they weren’t wrong, it actually feels like whoever wrote this was pretty mad themselves.

There’s discussion about the implied genocide, the implied dangers of merging worlds, heck, this entire page went over obvious plot holes.

It is the most salty thing i have seen in awhile, and it’s kinda funny in a way, this one got to me man:

it hits on mos of the critisim towards the episode and some more that some people may of missed upon first glance, so for all it’s faults i give it credit for finding new ways of disscussing everything wrong with the finale in ways that make it easier to understand where things went wrong for others.

I will admit though, the page does try to jusitify star’s actions despite also pointing out how bad they are with the “Saving of the monsters”, and it feels like someone should add the fact that there were other solutions available as pointed out by previous episodes and star’s actions aren’t easily forgivable considering the damage her actions caused outweigh the good intentions.

I think people are happy she wanted to save the monsters and wouldn’t let them die but the magic destroying thing would have massive consequences and the ideas behind it are not fleshed out enough to justify this was the best course of action for mewni and it’s future.

The monsters are saved, but will the destruction of a vital source for the universe mean better for everyone across all dimensions, including the monsters?.

After i wanted to check out tom’s family junk, see what they had, and at least someone added the fact eclipsa’s family and tom’s family almost seem to be parallels because even though people picked up on it, and me myself wanted more done with that....clearly nothing came of it, so i’m glad they have a section on that.

 though someone did forget to add wrathmelior having wings to her section.

Honestly this little tidbit stings considering the ending: 

Honestly what they have for dave is the weirder section cause since his character got shoved to the wayside and little was done with him, most of his section is a lot more guesswork about his relation with tom then anything

Like some of the tropes with him and wrath are funny because well, they fall into some fun couple troupes, all his stuff with tom are more...like putting his original abusive persona mixed with what he’s like now: 

Honestly in show where tom got his anger from relationship wise is not made clear since his parents were in 2 episodes.

like THIS was a detail that was a thing when tom’s dad was still an abusive demon, but i really don’t know how much this applies now. Dave seems to maybe have anger issues (I mean the dude threw a chair out of a window), but how tom feels about it or how big they are is put into question now.

Not to mention the “Big Guy” thing also seems like an abandoned part of OG dad and it feels like the show was going to make him a major character but abandoned it.

Like again, i wonder if these details should even be there because their canoncity is put into question since this stuff is coming from the original design of tom’s dad and not this current iteration. And i’m not sure if we have enough to even imply that dave is oblivious or has a serious temper since his anger has been shown once in the series.

i mean this is interesting cause i get to see what they put as far as minor characters and yeah it makes me wish the characters were used more because then the show could’ve done something with dave to actually give him a more clear character then having people base his personality and relationships off probably outdated info?

or at least, daron should’ve actively disbanded that info herself at one point or another if it’s untrue. It just feels like dave is supposed to be a wildly different character now but his og character is leaking in cause the show refused to give him anything to make people think of him differently.

tv tropes even mentions this was the original pitch, the abusive demon thing, so it’s weird they kept these elements while knowing they were adabonded

most of the rest of his page is pretty fine i was mostly curious about his page because i wanted to see how this thing would handle a minor character who was changed so drastically

Moved on to tom’s section, it’s decent at showing his flaws but reminding the people reading of his arc and improvement.

I love at least it addresses a lot of stuff i’ve been saying for years though

as someone who is used to people downplaying tom as a character, it’s neat here they do indeed consider tom is basically be almost the 3rd most important character in later seasons.

though concept alone did not gather him such a prominent fanbase, tom was just a good and interesting character in general and even the crew knew it, which is why even after the show ended how it did so many fans still consider tom a bright spot in it.

Tom still has a bunch of haters who refuse to like him no matter what and will probably never like him no matter what.

But most can agree he had a proper arc and his character remained likable and enjoyable at a time where a lot of characters were becoming increasingly hard to watch.

Tom didn’t just have a cool design, he was just a good character, and he and eclipsa have similar reasons for still being beloved even despite everything, the show never really ruined them for anyone, if anything, people cared about them WAY more then most of the other characters because they never got butchered like moon, star, or marco felt like they did.

Then i moved on to stuff about after the finale, and yes, the page remains salty.

I mean, i knew the show was being screwed bit by bit because as a fan i was keeping a close eye on this stuff, commercials, time, dates, ect. It hurts to see it though cause at the time people thought moving to Disney channel was gonna mean GOOD things for the series.

which sucks because THIS was also very true:

they did so much on their twitter to boost star, heck, it was designed to look like star, they showed star fanart, had star livestreams. Like Disney used to push this show hard till it slowly seemed to stop caring.

The Ama is also addressed briefly, especially Daron’s reaction, and yeah....

Still makes me pretty mad tbh.

1.)  The Digific Rec List

I’ve been trying to be more open and involved recently, so...  I’m really pleased to have made this resource for everyone to find fics written by members of the community with everyone’s help.  

Oh!  I also have a Discord Channel!  I’m not always that great at being on it, especially since returning physically to work on a weird schedule, but if you leave a message, I will respond when I see it!  I am hoping to hold “watch Hidden edit” sessions, or maybe...  Play a video game with anyone who wants to hang out?  

2.)  Tri: Integrity Lens

Sequel to Growing Up with You.  It simultaneously continues OC Eimi Anami’s story and spins Tri in a new way.  My goal is to take the great stuff that Tri has to offer and alter the storytelling in a way that I find enjoyable, which mostly means adding more investigating/making the Chosen more proactive/adding consequences, especially on the “dangers of being Chosen now that humans know about- and mostly fear- digimon” side of things.

The theme of my retelling is agency and responsibility.

I tend to be all over the place with how I feel about TIL.  It’s more plot and movement oriented than most of my work, so sometimes I feel like I’m... not writing the same way I usually do?  And maybe that’s bad?  But there are parts I love, especially coming soon in Ketsui.  And the art and screenshots and photo manips I do for it are!  So fun!  It’s cool that I’m trying something new by adding media to stories.

3.)  Seeking Resonance

A story I started in 2014 and completed in 2020.  Like most of my fics, I started it with no real plan, other than to explore my thoughts on longterm compatibility.  I ended up with this... meandering, heartfelt, intimate, powerful journey about a bunch of adults struggling to figure out how to build their happiness.  Showing you where everyone ended up this year was a true pleasure.

4.)  So You Were Alive

So the Kizuna novelization and the 2020 Digimon Adventure reboot hit at roughly the same time, ish?  I think?  And when Reboot Agumon seemed to know Taichi, I had this thought that- what if that’s OUR Agumon, from the original Digimon Adventure, come to help a new Taichi, now that his adult Taichi can no longer support him as a partner?

It’s a sweet oneshot about the bond between Agumon and Taichi, a bond strong enough to cross worlds and dimensions.

Totes agree, it would also be a plot twist, I have many thoughts but i fear since he is so loved he will change ‘sigh’

I really doubt Matt will compromise his long-game plans to make the fandom happy (they shit on him for every decision he makes, regardless, so he might as well stick to his guns about this). If his friends and players really put in the work to reform Essek, and if they love him to the point where him being evil would impact their enjoyment of the game, THEN Matt might change his plans. Obviously, things have changed already with Essek and Matt’s original plans, but he’s not caving on essek’s values/beliefs, even with the Nein offering him a second chance. I keep seeing people say “oh, Matt lost a Big Bad with Essek!” No he didn’t? Essek is still acting selfishly. He’s still willingly putting others in danger to save himself. He’s still evil, guys, and he’s not showing any signs of changing. He still has Big Bad potential. This intervention of the m9 just adds a dimension of emotional complexity to it, both for him and the nein. I trust Matt and the story he’s telling, but I also know that no matter what Essek does, the fandom will see it how they want to see it—and they really, really want to see him turn good, be saved by the power of love, and join the nein. I don’t.

Sweet Heart #2

Sweet Heart #2 Action Lab Danger Zone 2020 Written by Dillon Gilbertson Illustrated by Francesco Iaquinta Coloured by Marco Pagnotta Lettered by Saida Temofonte    8 years after the events of Issue 1, Maddie just wants to live a normal life. Unfortunately, she has to deal with public ridicule for the monster that follows her and struggles with contempt for her parents’ decision to conceive her into a “feeder family”.    Last issues rush to tell the story Maddie’s father has brought us to this point.  This issue is so much stronger than the first one which in all honesty is a good thing and it’s why when a premise is intriguing you give it more than the initial look see.  The second issue is going to make it or break it for me and this has made it!  This issue felt just about perfect to me in how it moves the story forward, how Maddie asks the right questions and just how frustrated she is at everyone for various reasons.  Sure the sins of the father might have been passed down to her and it’s entirely unwanted, then again who would want it, and she has to reconcile that within herself and really deal with the situation at hand.  There are so many moments within this book I want to scream at characters, much like we do at the cinema or at the telly, and this kind of behaviour is what sets this apart as something where the connection between the reader and the character has become an unshakable bond.      The way that this is being told is sensational!  The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information keep the story moving forward beautifully.  I am also a huge fan of the way that as the story moves forward the reader is able to possibly pick up cues about possible reasons why things happen.  It is the little things that happen which kind of speak volumes and it makes this that much more enjoyable, at least for me.  The character development that we see here is marvellous.  How the circumstances and situations that arise are dealt with as well as how the characters interact with their dialogue shows us there is depth to the characters we haven’t seen yet.  The pacing is great and as it moves us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.    With a story such as this you need a very good and stylised form of art for the interiors.  Francesco and Marco make quite the team here and they do some pretty astounding work together.  I like how we see the linework here and how it is utilised to bring out the attention to detail.  This is what makes the faces and facial expressions able to express such verve.  The way we see backgrounds being utilised and how they give the book it’s depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size of the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong, talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work we see here is great!  How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is done extremely well.  I love the techniques that we see utilised to lay the colours down as well as that tends to add more dimension to the people and places. ​    This is different from anything else you’ll see on stands.  The writing is wonderful and how we see the layers within the story and knowing that the heat is burning just under the caldera is thrilling.  I mean who doesn’t like it when it all explodes in violent outburst?  I cannot wait to see what these folks have in store for us next it’s sure to add even further layers of intensity!

The anime improved her character

Now I want to clarify something before I start. 

I know the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom is heavy on the shipping, so I want to ask that most of you readers who are shippers to please put to that to the side for a moment. I’m not attacking any of your ships. I’m not saying they are inherently bad. Nor am I trying to put any shade on them. I’m solely focusing on the character as a whole.

I also understand that Anzu/Tea’s character is also a touchy subject considering the fandom’s mixed feelings about her. So I also want to ask to read this with an open mind. I’m not trying to change anyone’s perspective of her. I’m not trying to make you like her if you don’t. Or hate her if you do like her. I’m talking about my own opinion about her and what I felt about her. And you’re more than free to disagree with me, just like I have a right to talk about what I feel about her as well.

With that said here are my thoughts...

There’s one more thing I want to clarify before we start. 

I will be addressing Anzu’s character in three perspectives.

You have her manga counterpart.

Her Japanese anime counterpart

And her 4kids version. 

I will not be including her game counterparts by Konami. Nor will I talk about her movies versions either. Because Pyramid of Light isn’t essentially part of the main story as a whole.  And Dark side of Dimensions takes place after all the main Yu-Gi-Oh! events. And while yes the movie does take place in the manga universe. It’s still many years after the release of the books.  

Now… with that said let’s officially start.

As someone whose been both watching the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and reading the manga there’s a number of things I’ve seen be changed in both versions. Besides the larger obvious changes, (such as duels, plot points, etc.) there were some smaller ones that I noticed when I reread the manga.

And thus we get to Anzu’s character as a whole.

And as the picture says.

Anzu’s manga incarnation is my least favorite of the three versions.

Now, I really do like Anzu as a character. I don’t hate her. But I’m not going to lie that I used to be one of those people who would bash on her simply because she existed. But looking back on that I found just how unfair and bias that was.  Then I got to take a closer look at her character and I found, that her manga incarnation (to me) has to be her worst version mostly because of how she behaves in it.

Now no hate to Kazuki Takahashi, but Ima be frank, the only female character that I thought was well-written was Mai, and Ishizu to an extent. The rest… well could use some work. More particularly Anzu, now I do understand considering the manga was first published in 1996. In a time where women’s roles were a bit different then how it is today.

I’m no expert on Japanese customs, and how women are and were treated. But I do know there is a difference in Japanese culture and Western culture. Especially with woman empowerment in the recent years.

Now beyond that small detail, I already came clean that manga!Anzu wasn’t exactly a favorite. I’m not saying she was all that bad, as she clearly has her good points but I think what made her bland and off-setting is how she reacts to certain situations.

Warning: I’m heading into romantic territory.

I think more of less her crush on Yami Yugi/Atem. More specifically during the time they went to the water park. What seriously made me ticked off about Anzu was that she intentionally put herself in danger in order to see “cool other Yugi” in action.

And that’s one thing that bothered me a lot. Because the reason she even got a crush on Atem is mostly because he saved her from being shot. Which isn’t inherently bad. But you think she could be more concerned about the fact that the guy died. By being lit. On. Fire.

Who had been sitting right next to her I might add.

Granted she was blind folded, but you think that a person who bets her life wouldn’t be playing games by using fingers. (Granted Atem’s intelligence is off the charts when it comes to playing games). She should be scared shitless of the “mysterious” person and for her life. But still she falls in love with a stranger who DIRECTLY caused a criminal to be lit the guy on fire. I can understand that she falls in love with him because he saved her life. But if setting up a trap so a person can be lit on fire willingly doesn’t scream a manipulative psychopath, then I don’t know what to call them then.

Now going away from that fact, I think another thing that really bothered me is just how distinctly she cares little for everything else when dealing with Atem and her not so secret crush on him. And that would always involve little-miss-friendship one way or another to cast Yugi aside, just so she can spend some time with Atem. And to me that was just irksome. (So much for being childhood friends)

Something else that tends to grind my gears has to be the fact that she always, somehow is the victim of being captured and being used as a ransom or cause troubles for the whole gang. (Not to say that the anime hasn’t done this, it’s just not as much as it was in the manga).

Though, I won’t deny it must suck being the only girl. Especially during that “don’t make a sound” trial in the Death-T arc.

Now the reason why I prefer her anime counterparts compared to her manga version, is mostly because they were able to add more to her character beyond the basics. As well as tone down some of her negatives to something that sounds realistic and what a normal teenage girl could have.  

Now I’m not saying that her anime version hasn’t done wrongs. As at times she would get frustrated over nothing. And her jealousy rivalry with Rebecca can get out of hand and just straight out made for the basis of comedy. But to me that’s still miles better than her manga counterpart (especially in the earlier works).  

But if I had to be honest, I think her Season 0 counterpart, as well as her 4kids version were my favorite incarnations of her.

Yes, even her 4kids version. Friendship jokes aside they able to give her a less annoying personality. (And the fact that they got a voice actor that didn’t try to sound like a stereotype cute anime school girl) And whether you like Tea/Anzu or not, she does have a spunky personality, which is a lot more evident in both Season 0 and her 4kids counterpart. This gal is the embodiment of friendship goals!

She’s a friend who will always have your back and is willing to go through thick and thin. Not to mention if you’re feeling down she will try to find a way to lift your spirits. If not listen to your problems and comfort you.

Say what you want, but if she were real. I would like to have her as a best friend. And just in general, going back to her Season 0 counterpart, (as many consider to be her best version) and quite frankly I agree, and I think what made her such a good character in it, is that some of Anzu’s lesser great moments were given to Miho. Who has a cute and scatterbrain personality, not only did it give Miho personality, she was usually enjoyable to see on screen. Sometimes she was annoying, but not to the point were it was overbearing. And it meshed pretty well with those faults and still make her joy to watch on screen. Because of this we got to focus on more of Anzu’s stronger traits, and be a supporting independent character. For instance, the chono-sensei episode, where Anzu stood up for a class mate because her love letter was going to be revealed to the whole class as punishment.

Or starting a petitions to give students a chance to get a job while they’re in school. Or the fortune teller scene, where she reveals that she doesn’t believe in fortune telling and that she can shape her own future because she makes it happen by her choices and will.

I think more or less I think some of my more favorite changes has to be these two scenes.

These two are from the Season 0 and first manga volumes. The differences being instead of Anzu being the turned into a toy first, it’s Miho and later on Anzu joins, but out of her free will to fight along side her friends.

The second comparison is from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist vol. Where she’s being controlled by Marik and would be forced to swallow a poisoned capsule if Yugi doesn’t duel a controlled Jounouchi/Joey

And the second one being that she’s strapped down to a chair and instead of being poisoned she will instead be crushed under a large metal crate. This allows Marik to release his control on her, since she’s locked. Which then allows her to watch the duel.

Being free of Marik’s control she’s able to tell Kaiba and Mokuba this:

And to me that makes a huge difference because it shows how much of strong and caring character she is. She’s willing to die for her friends so that they don’t have to.

(Though to be fair in the original manga she probably would do the same if she was in control). But I think that small change grow and expands her character even more.

And to me, I simply just prefer her anime counterpart in comparison to her manga version. I sincerely believe that both animes fixed what made her a bit intolerable in the manga. At least to me that’s what I feel
