Anne Baxter was part of my Bisexual Awakening. My family has a tradition that every Palm Sunday we watch The ten commandments on TV together... And starting from a very young age, I essentially developed a crushes on Anne Baxter's Nefertiri & Yul Brynner's Ramses. Dude, the woman was HOT! They both were! My crush definitely wasn't helped by the fact that Anne Baxter's costumes were a bit on the sheer side. She had a way of capturing you with her eyes, and I never understood why Charlton heston's Moses didn't just have a threesome with Nefertiri and Ramses. LOL

Her Nefertiri in The Ten Commandments was FORMATIVE TO ME. If not the hottest old movie lady, then she definitely played the hottest old movie character. if that makes sense.

Look. Listen. I only *just* discovered her on a post from the Have You Seen This Romcom poll blog. Saw she had the same last name as me and went OOH hi hello. Went to her IMdB and saw she was born in Indiana like moi. I am now even more intrigued. Been eagerly telling my partner this, and he was like "maybe you guys are distantly related?" And after 2 hrs of going down the tumblr tag + her imdb photos, I'm In Deep(tm) and I can't stop looking at her like 😍 When I go to my grandma's house, bet your ass I'm gonna check my grandpa's genealogy and see if we're somehow related. Sorry that's not really propaganda I just got real excited, esp when I saw that the submission deadline was extended (bless your soul). Narrowing down the movies where she's hottest in was Hell tyvm. I've only just discovered her, she looks gorgeous to me in every movie still I see of her gdi lol.

Viva “Violensia”! New Jesse Daniel Edwards Album Out Now

(personal narrative starts here… skip if you only want to hear about the album)

Everyone should have a facilitator – someone in your corner to tell you the things you dream about – the crazy to the mundane- are not that far out of reach.

I’ve had many facilitators. I’ve tried, in turn, to fill that need for my friends.

This time it was my husband.

I wasn’t even trying. We JUST went on the mini tour with Salim. My needs should have been sated for awhile yet.

Doug, I sigh. Doug, Jesse’s album dropped the same day as Salim’s – June 23rd. His album release show is 06/30/23. It’s a Friday… 800+ miles away. We were JUST in Nashville for The Church and it was… expensive (we flew.)

Doug doesn’t even blink. Ask for it, tell your boss you’ll get your Friday work done early. We’ll drive it.

This feeling. Right here. If I could bottle… I love being surprised and this was joyful. I had *no* idea I could even hope for this and POOF there it is. A reasonable plan to accomplish this most primal of needs: to be front and center for music I love.

I get all my work done. I don’t hear from my boss about my leave. I pack anyway. I rage (quietly as is my way). I am a GOOD EMPLOYEE. I’ve only called in sick twice in the last three years and that was for COVID. Righteous indignation flows from every fiber of my being. I am about to get real ‘sick’. Uh huh. Don’t mess with me.

The long and short is they missed my request. It’s fine. I got Friday’s work done on Thursday. And just like that, Cinderella is allowed to go to the ball.

I log off my computer, car already packed, Doug awaits to whisk me off on the first leg of our journey. 6+ hrs gets us to Arkadelphia (“… freedom! Shine the light…”) The rest of the journey puts us in Nashville at 2ish. We sleep. Like the dead.

Awake.

Clean up. Get presentable. The venue website says, “Dress to impress” (it also likens itself to the Viper Room, but I would say only a 21st century Viper Room with Yelp reviews to contend with. A Viper Room genuinely concerned with both the use of coasters and Your Good Time.) It’s hard to “bring it” any harder than we do normally on a show night, but we try. I wear make up (never a guarantee) and Doug picks the spiffiest paisley shirt he brought.

The venue – The Eighth Room – has PARKING… A limited amount, but… (angelic singing) PARKINNNNNGGGG… regardless.

The side of the building sports artful “grafitti” – Rockstars live here. Good. We’re home then, I joke.

The Kraken tentacle door pull… is locked. I look up. There’s a camera. Please, Mr Eye in The Sky… please let us in…it’s hot. There’s a click. We walk in… and are immediately told things aren’t ready yet. Ok, I’m going to stand right here and not be in anyone’s way while being 2 degrees cooler than I was out there. Ok?

Not ok.

We are shuffled back outside.

Uh, why did you unlock the door then? They remedy this by locking it behind us.

We steam gently on the pavement for an interminable length of time. I start to wilt… sadness… I wore makeup on purpose for this.

*CLICK*

We are allowed back in!!! All is forgiven. The inside is dark and cold and… oh sweet Saint of Achy Joints and Bad Backs… there is a COUCH. I sink deliciously in to it and experience something rarely afforded me at shows: comfort.

I order a Diet Coke (psttt… use of coasters… that was foreshadowing) that I sip while goggling at my surroundings. There are statues with painted sayings emblazoned on them (“No more fake friends.”) Mirrors. Every surface is a different pattern, but it all works together. There is a stage directly in front of us hung with crushed velvet curtains.

There’s a fleeting pang in my chest. Had our business situation not prematurely folded last Summer, this is the type of space I would have wanted our venue to be.

I set the Diet Coke on the glass top table behind me and reach for what I thought might be a menu — later, a ghost appears unnoticed and places a folded napkin under my drink to catch the condensation. I am completely oblivious. Instead of a list of cocktails and nibbles, I’m looking at a program! Like this is a graduation or a kid’s school play.

I love it.

Under a tentative set list, I see this. No attribution (but he told me just now as I write this that yes, he and the others in the band wrote it). But this is why I am here… I’m tearing up again just reading it.

How many of these programs just got wadded up and thrown away that night? That is easily one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen … did anyone else even read it?

Showtime:

There’s Landon [Pigg]. If you’ve seen Jesse at all recently, you’ve seen Landon. I tried to research when the relationship began and the answer seems to be the end of last year (2022). For lack of more information, I’m going to create a scenario from the one bit I did manage to find about the relationship being borne of an appreciation of “red wine and music”… or something like that. Something half childhood playground interaction where it really was as easy as just asking, “Wanna be friends?” and the scene in Stepbrothers, “Did we just become… BEST. FRIENDS?”

Landon is all button-down shirt earnest. I love the quote in the program, “Landon is a young man on a soul quest. In a word, he is ‘nimble.’ His upper range engages birds and the more tuneful of dogs. Down, Scruffy, down girl!” A playful jab at the attractive nature of the earnest boy charming the birds down from the trees. His voice is beautiful. His songs are sweet and wistful. Though he seems to spend his time with Jesse on the percussive side (shaker, maracas, tambourine, bongos), he seems an adept multi-instrumentalist in his own right, moving comfortably between keys and guitar.

At some point, it starts to rain. It doesn’t even sound real at first. It sounds like rain sticks I used to see (don’t touch!) at the mall when I was a kid.

Beautiful.

I return to a lyric for what I’m sure won’t be the last time. From Occasionally Joy, “My wardrobe can’t make up its mind…” I’ve already amended my list of Jesse’s outfit personas once. I’m thrown a new one tonight. Jeans, white tank, and… Castiel help us… a trench coat. Tonight he looks like The Highlander (“there can be ONLY ONE!”) and I am living for it.

Just like my time spent Salim last weekend, Jesse with a band is a completely new experience from his quiet, unassuming performances spied thus far. I had a basic idea from videos watched online. It was completely different seeing it live.

Jesse is a man possessed. The demon-spirit is music. The Rock. I verify in my photos later – he’s not even aware at times. He is transported. Slave and master. Dominance and submission. Complete thrall to the sounds he wrestles from his guitar. He throws himself to the ground. “Haven’t the monkeys…” Writhes. “Done such…” Submits to the music while his guitar submits to him. “Lovely job…”

What we got:

MDA was a delightful finale as everyone got up – lead by Landon who boasts some wicked rug cutting capability – and started dancing. It was fun to watch. Happiness like that is catching. A high note to end on for sure.

Back to my POV:

The show was amazing. We ended up rocking out next to a kind, older gentleman who was later revealed to be the Pigg Patriarch (or Father Pigg as he is now in my phone). He was delighted to meet us and hear of our long trek to see Jesse and his sons (Gabe, the drummer, belongs to Clan Pigg too). He even asked me what the draw was. It’s taken me time to realize why some of his music is so comfortable, so familiar to me.

Jesse said of the Violensia songs, “They are just so weird and dramatic and operatic…”

I showed Papa Pigg the tattoo that takes up a good portion of my right shin. Another young man with sculpted cheekbones and a flare for the “weird and dramatic and operatic.” Dad gets it. He says he already thought that with Jesse’s choice of white tank top tonight.

There can be only one…

Landon talks to us for a bit. He talks again about the stickers I gifted him with when I saw them in May. They were AI generated and then manipulated in Procreate. One is a guinea pig in front of a foamy cappuccino and the other is an anthropomorphized guinea pig playing a guitar. I was mildly terrified giving them to him. Afraid perhaps, like me, his name got him bullied in school, but no, he seemed delighted. Neither he nor Jesse seem to have much merch (I do stickers for Salim as a freebie at his merch table “Do you have room in your life for stickers?” He will ask people while they browse his offerings). Landon agrees they don’t have much merch usually, but he then tells me that his Mom has framed the stickers (I don’t know if I got this right, but I immediately see them placed over a mantle piece, something Mother Pigg has given pride of place to, she gazes fondly at them when she thinks of her boy, the singer… And oh YES in this imagining they are a family of Pixar animated guinea pigs ready to star in “Sing 3.” Please don’t begrudge me my happy mind movies.)

I pause… I think for a minute… trying to write this.

I don’t know what I am trying to express to you, the collective you.

I know there are people out there who feel like I do. People who don’t have a drug yet to keep them going. I’m just trying to show you mine. There’s a scene in the 1990 “It” where the little kid with asthma has it revealed to him that his medicine is just water. “If you need it, ” his friends tell him, “It’s good medicine.”

I’ll never write something that will single handedly drive up anyone’s album sales (but per the above Manifesto, it’s not even about that… this makes me feel better.) I’m just trying to show you out there in the darkness with me that there are lights, there are drugs – whatever they mean to you – there are things to keep going for.

There is beauty.

My favorite song from Violensia is “Dream Where You Can’t Wake up” (complete aside: I’m either psychic or the Gods of People Afraid to Fly unlocked Violensia for me months ago so I could listen to it on a flight recently while trying not think about crashing .. when I could finally listen to it officially, I knew EXACTLY how this entire song went):

“Tomorrow’s gonna come, the sun is gonna shine, shine on everyone…tomorrow’s gonna come blue skies are gonna hang far above everyone…”

And now I’m really dating myself. Just like Curly said in “City Slickers,” the answer is one thing.. ONE… but you have to figure out what that one thing is.

For me, it’s the hope I hear in these songs, Salim, Jesse, YOU out there making music because it’s what your soul needs to survive.

I’m not alone. There is something beautiful to look for. And when the darkness starts to creep back in, I will search for my next “hit” and the artists in the above manifesto will be out there ready to provide.

“To every broken heart that came before… I’m gonna be just fine…”

Combatants Will Be Dispatched!, Vol. 5

For some time now, the “evil” in this series’ evil organization has been somewhat questionable. At first it looked like it was just Six, who clearly was content with being a creepy asshole but drew the like at, know, actual evil things like rape and murder. As we’ve gone on, and found that the evil organization is in fact trying to save the planet Earth, more motives have been questioned. And now we find that the organization actually has a real HR policy – we’re told that the Combat agents can sexually harass to their heart’s content (it gets them evil points, after all) but that actual sexual assault is a punishable offense. You get the sense the author realized that they were going a bit too far. KonoSuba, by the same author, will also try to walk this very thin line. In the meantime, the organization is going to have to deal with the biggest threat it’s ever seen to date. The demon lord is dead and his daughter has taken over… and she’s a total sweetie pie.

Rose gets the cover, and is the “heroine of this volume”, but actually gets very little to do besides eat. The Demon Lord’s Domain wants to negotiate, so the group heads over there, and as noted above, finds they accidentally killed the demon lord in their last attack, leaving his daughter Viper in charge. The demon lord was a stubborn middle aged cuss. Viper is kind, gentle, and very apologetic. As such, the demons are actually surrendering – and asking for Six and company to find them a new place to live, as their territory is basically uninhabitable. There’s just one problem with this – the Kingdom of Grace is not content to let the demons simply go “our bad, sorry” and then move in next door. They want reparations. Can Alice negotiate their way to a settlement? Can Heine come to terms with her new job as a magical boiler room? And can six and Viper team up to take out those pesky Puzzle x Dragon games once and for all?

So yes, Viper’s presence in the cast really shakes things up, mostly as, unlike Princess Tillis, Grimm, Snow, or the other characters whose suffering is hilarious (and in Grimm and Snow’s case, brought upon themselves), being mean to Viper is like kicking a puppy. Indeed, the main worry is that she’s too naive and willing to do whatever anyone else wants – hence the mention of the HR guidelines. Honestly, she’s probably the first major character in this that I can’t think of an equivalent to in KonoSuba, the way that you can see Snow as Aqua + Darkness or Grimm as Wiz + Yunyun. Her friendship with Six is actually, dare I say it, rather sweet. Of course, this does not mean the author has suddenly forgotten that this is the Japanese equivalent of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. There is lots of terrible stuff here. But when said stuff hits too close to Viper, it just sort of drifts to a halt.

We’ve almost caught up with Japan, and the anime based on the series is out next month. So it’s a good time to read a new volume of the worst evil organization, and see how they deal with good.

Day 275 / Oct 1

Matt. 1-4

Chapter 1 opens by giving a lengthy list of geneology all the way from Abraham through David through Joseph to Jesus Christ. If you want the full list, all the way from Adam, see this website. After the listing, Matthew (the anon who was definitely not Matthew but the name has stuck) gives us the birth story of Jesus. Basically, after Mary and Joseph got together, Joseph got cucked by God as Jesus was conceived. Joseph being a prudent man, didn't want to publicly shame his wife, but while he was contemplating it, an angel told him that all of this is God's plan and to call the baby, 'Jesus.' Through this nativity story, Matthew essentially states his themes outright: that Jesus is the fulfillment of all the prophecies in the Tanakh. He even quotes from Isaiah, I think from the section about the Suffering Servant. Because of the angel, Joseph didn't have sex with 14 year old Mary until after Jesus was born. After this comes the real meat of the Nativity story: the Wise Men[1]. In those days, Herod was ruler of Judea and to him came Wise Men out of the East asking of the King of the Jews. They said that they saw a star and they've come to worship him. Herod, maniacal as ever, asked them to tell him where the baby because he too wants to worship him :). Then Matthew quotes from Micah. The Magi make their way to Bethlehem where they find Mary and Jesus in a house where they fall down and worship him. However, because of their Magi sense, they completely avoid Herod on their way back. The angel comes back to tell Joseph to flee into Egypt because Herod is planning on killing all the babies in that region (similar to the story of Krishna, no?) [Insert Jeremiah quote]. So the family go to Egypt, and years later when Herod's dead, they come back. But they're still afraid of Bethlehem, so they go way north into Galilee, into Nazareth.

Cut to nearly 30 years in the future where a guy named John the Baptist is preaching about the Kingdom of God near the banks of the Jordan, quoting Isaiah. John, despite being a wild man, was wildly popular and many people came to get baptized by him, and John welcomed all. All except the "vipers" that were the Pharisees and Sadducees. They are the worst of the worst, the only one fit to repent them is God himself. Then out of nowhere, Jesus comes to get baptized by John, but John is awed by Jesus' holiness and insist that Jesus baptize him. Eventually John gives in, and when Jesus goes into the Jordan, the sky splits open and the voice of God calls out and declares that Jesus is God's son and he loves him. After his baptism, Jesus fasts for 40 days and nights (there's that number again, also a Moses parallel) where he gets tempted by the Devil. The devil makes him turns stone into bread, and then to throw himself off a tall building, and finally to worship Satan in exchange for great wealth. Each time, Jesus tells Satan to fuck off and quotes from Deuteronomy. After his time in the desert is up, he goes to live in Capernaum, [insert Isaiah quote]. Here, he goes about preaching the gospel of the Kingdom and eventually, gets some desciples. First up, Simon (Peter) and Andrew the fishermen. Up next, James and John of Zebedee. The gang goes about preaching, teaching, healing, and so on throughout Galilee. Everyone within a 100 mile radius comes to see Jesus.

He asks the woman if he can buy her a drink and right after he orders, two other people walk up behind them. The male intrudes the female to the group as “daisy” and we learn that the first two were role playing and actually together. The second male & the first two people are actually all roommates.

The scene changes and you see the first two people being intimate, and then they’re sleeping. The guy wakes up for food and then he hears the tv turn on and he walks out to see his friend playing video games and joins him for a few rounds. A few years go by and it’s the first guys birthday - he has a kid at this point and he and Theo are married. Karl shows up to his birthday party and gives him a video game they used to play together but in a new upgraded virtual world! When the day is over Karl and the first guy get on the virtual game together and start playing. The game allows them to feel totally emerged in this video game and world. Both men play the characters they used to play, Karl picking his female character and the first guy picking lance his male character.

When they finish playing the female character (Karl) has won and ends up ontop of the male character. They end up kissing and the first guy freaks out. (At this point you have to remember that the game allows you to feel any and all sensations) he logs out of the game gets into bed and his wife notices he has a hard on. They get intimate and the next night she goes out for a girls night.

After Danny puts his kid to bed and they both log back on the game - they lean back and they agree they were drunk and now they are going to play a serious game. Still choosing the same characters they go in to begin their fight & instead start getting....intimate (I’m not sure if any of this shows on the tv screen or if it’s just virtual but, he might wanna chill) after they finish they try to talk about it, awkwardly, but Danny’s son kicks him and he exits the game. His wife comes home from girls night out and he pretends to be asleep.

The next morning his wife is telling him about how she drank a lot while she was out because she ended up getting her period (their actively trying to get pregnant). The scene changes to the video game and they end up doing the same thing as before.

Karl and Danny end up using this game as a way to be intimate with one another and in turn start neglecting their real lives. They get so involved with doing it in the game that they no longer do it in their real lives. Danny’s wife is starting to question everything about herself. But, at the same time all of this begs the question, are these men gay? They start to talk about what it means and Karl explains that he always chooses the woman because of how much better it feels and of course, they get intimate again. His wife is starting to notice a change in him. Karl comes to expect playing this game with Danny, they have text messages where they plan what scene they’ll...play & Karl gets upset one night when Danny has to cancel for a date with his wife. While one the date his wife calls him out for his weird behavior and starts talking to him about how their not getting pregnant - she is upset that they aren’t having any sex & he says it’s just because he’s tired. She knows that more is happening (people always know), she calls him out for cheating because she notices that he doesn’t want her anymore. He doesn’t try to get intimate with her anymore & he assures her nothing is happening. The scene changes & Karl is in bed with the young girl he’s in a relationship with - he says he’s not feeling the mood & they stop. Karl logs on, Danny is logged on & then they both log off. Danny hides the VR game, deciding he’s not going to use it anymore. Karl wants to know where he’s at & Danny tells him he can’t play anymore, he says it’s not fair to Theo & Karl begs him to change his mind. Danny hangs up.

Seven months go by and Theo is pregnant - Karl’s life on the other hand...not looking to bright. He’s angry and depressed & he’s just waiting around for Danny to message him. It’s Danny’s birthday and Theo emails Karl and invites him over to their house for dinner (Theo still doesn’t know about what happened between Karl and Danny) - dinner is awkward, to say the least. Danny is upset with Karl for coming over for dinner, and they get into an argument about it. Danny tells him everything is just to weird & Karl tells him the only weird thing is that no other experience in the real world matches what they had in that game.

Karl tells him that he goes into the game all the time looking for a fix to their affair - even having his character be intimate with a polar bear character. He claims nothing can match what Danny / Lance & him / Roxette have in the game. Thing get heated and Karl leaves after cake. He lets Danny know that Roxette will be waiting in the game at midnight & Danny logs on & they do their thing. Karl tells Danny (in the game as their characters) that he loves what their doing & he loves him. Danny feels weird about it (obviously because he feels the same way but he has family obligations) - Danny is having internal conflict and he tells Karl to log out of the game and meet him in real life at a car park.

Danny says they have to kiss because they need to know if they really feel that way in real life because he’s tired of not knowing. Karl is trying to make it light but it’s clearly hard for them & after they kiss for real they both say they don’t feel anything. Agreeing they can just be friends. Karl says it’s different in the game and him and Danny start fighting - they get arrested and Theo has to pick him up. Theo wants to know why they were fighting and as soon as Danny starts talking it cuts to a scene of his birthday. They make a deal with one another that one night a month (the 14) Danny and Karl get to have their thing together and Theo gets to experience other men in real life.

8/10: Recommend - it is a weird watch though, as most Black mirror episodes are, but, this is really a weird one.

The problem is I didn’t really remember that this car even had a blacked-out roof until I checked the window sticker. Because unlike regular cars, you don’t think about things like that when you’re living with a Hellcat.

I did appreciate the $995 Brass Monkey wheels, but mostly because Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys was the third album I ever bought—the first two being In 3-D by Weird Al Yankovic and Raising Hell by Run DMC. I’m Gen X, yo. Even still, I’m not so sure I’d opt for the $1,995 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Oh, who am I kidding—of course I would! Of note is the fact that although I might have chewed through five sets of tires (one short of my initial goal of six sets in a year), nothing on the car broke. No matter how viciously we treated the Hellcat with Motor Trend’s version of accelerated wear and tear, only routine maintenance—like changing out 8 quarts of synthetic oil every 6,000 miles—was all the big red gal required.

One takeaway from living with a Charger Hellcat is if you’re able to control your right foot, the thing drives like a normal car. You might be thinking, “Hey man, anything’s a normal car if you don’t drive it like you stole it.” That’s not true of many performance machines. Take the Alfa Romeo 4C. It’s never a normal car, ever! The same is true for a Viper, a Nissan GT-R, or a Lamborghini Aventador. But the Hellcat version of the Charger can do a close approximation of a $29,090 SE model. It’s roomy, it’s surprisingly comfortable, the Uconnect infotainment system works pretty much OK, and the back seats are good for three adults, fantastic for two. But if any of the above figures into your decision to go out and purchase a Charger Hellcat—a $73,725 purchase that I highly recommend—you’re doing it wrong.

You buy the four-door Hellcat with the shrieking supercharger so you can see the look on the guy’s face at the tire shop as he once again chisels molten rubber off your exhaust pipes. You get yourself a 707-hp Charger so that when you’re virtually parked in traffic you can relieve tension by spinning the back wheels a bit. Not a big smoky burnout, but just enough to make everyone around you nervous. It helps both relieve the tension and break up the monotony. You buy yourself a Charger Hellcat because it’s as close to a concealed carry permit as there is in the automotive world. Just like a .357 Magnum under your coat, you always know the immense power is there, mere inches away.

There’s a tension to living with this car. Perhaps that’s what 12 months of Hellcat stewardship most taught me. It’s a constant tussle between you behaving like a upright citizen and four-wheeled, tail-out, tire-shredding anarchy. Do I have the strength to not pointlessly burn up a tank of gas today? It’s a moral struggle, a constant one.

There’s going to be a time—and it’s coming sooner than many of you think—that you won’t be able to waltz down to your local neighborhood Dodge dealer and drive away in a snarling, antisocial beast with a Satanized kitty cat head on the fender. Not only will cars be electric, but you’ll also be too busy InstaSnapTweeting to even want to drive them, assuming they’ll still let us. No one will speed, and cars most certainly will not burn out. I’m not saying the impending future is better or worse. I’m just saying it’s racing toward us. Quickly. The Hellcat, this Hellcat, any Hellcat, is a finger in the eye of that particular inevitability. Take a guess as to which finger.

Royal Navy aircraft carriers – vulnerable or fit for the fight?

There have been frequent suggestions that aircraft carriers are inherently vulnerable and have been rendered obsolete by a new generation of weaponry. Here we look the range of conventional threats the carriers might face in a high-end conflict and how the RN and the Queen Elizabeth Class are configured to deal with them.

The Russians have called the QEC “large and convenient targets”. A cute sound bite that is frequently rehearsed in various forms across the media and helps create the illusion that they are just passive floating airfields, lacking their own offensive power or the ability to defend themselves. Some forget that a prime purpose of the carrier battle group is to go on the offensive and strike in a proactive way, and if necessary to eliminate what may threaten them before it may mount an attack. That said, it would be complacent to think that any aircraft carrier is invulnerable. Recent developments in stealth aircraft, hypersonic and ballistic anti-ship missiles and ultra-quiet submarines are a threat to all surface combatants. Even the mighty US Navy is stretched to cope in this environment, so how much more is the threadbare RN at risk?

On the day HMS Queen Elizabeth arrived in Portsmouth for the first time we met Commodore Andrew Betton, commander of the UK Carrier Strike Group and asked him if he considers the RN can offer the ship adequate protection, particularly if faced with high-level threats. He replied “The maritime task group operates with layers of force protection, some of which is delivered by ships & aircraft. We also have satellite surveillance to support our understanding of what’s around us. We can bring in extra layers of protection when needed. Every deployment of the carrier & structure of task group around will be based on an intelligence assessment of the threat likely to be faced and the operational tasking.” These layers of protection and defensive measures the UK is able to provide the QEC are worth closer examination.

Seven layers of protection

1. Situational awareness

The outer defence of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) are aircraft such as the P-8A Poseidon’s, satellite imagery, undersea acoustic sensors, and even basic human intelligence could all contribute to this awareness. Depending on the circumstances and the ability to collect this data, this kind of information may be plentiful at times or almost nonexistent on other occasions. History has proven for example, that land-based aircraft, even if dedicated to the task is almost incapable of sustaining round the clock protection or intelligence to naval vessels. It is always extremely challenging to secure and maintain real-time data on distant threats. This works both ways, to attack the CSG from distance, the enemy also needs accurate location data on ships that may cover over 400 nautical miles in 24 hours.

The QEC and some of the RN’s escort ships now benefit from some exceptionally capable new radars. The high-resolution Artisan 3D (Type 997) radar has a range of over 100nm. The carrier’s (Type 1046) S1850M long range air search radar has a range out to 200nm. The large size of the QEC allows the aerials to be mounted high above the waterline, extending the range at which sea-skimmers can be detected.

2. Carrier aircraft

The first active line of defence are the F-35B Lightnings flown from the carrier itself. Able to strike land targets, and intercept aircraft and attack ships that threaten the CSG. A major strength is that the F-35 has exceptional sensors and can be networked with other aircraft to monitor a large area, feed data back to the carrier and respond quickly. A potential weakness here is the un-refuelled combat radius of the F-35B (without drop tanks that compromise stealth and handling) at approximately 500nm.

The Searchwater radar of Crowsnest helicopter has an approximate maximum range of 150nm and operate up to 450nm away from the carrier with sorties lasting up to 4.5 hrs. As the range of anti-ship missiles increases, the combat radius and limited number of aircraft (12-24?) that can be deployed against potential launch platforms become critical.

3a. Area defence (air)

The Principal Anti Air Missile System (PAAMS) carried by the T45 is possibly the best and naval air defence system afloat anywhere in the world and is theoretically capable of detecting and simultaneously engaging multiple aircraft and missiles travelling up to Mach 4. The Sea Viper missiles provide an air defence umbrella that extends out to about 65 nautical miles over the CBG.

Once the propulsion problems have been fully cured by the mid-2020s, with just 6 Type 45s, the RN is likely to be able to assign a maximum of two these destroyers for escorting the CBG. Even if the MoD actually holds sufficient missile stocks for all the T45s to embark a full outfit, they can carry a maximum of 48 and cannot be replenished at sea. One can have great confidence an initial saturation attack would be successfully repelled, but repeated attacks could exhaust limited ammunition quickly. The comparable AEGIS-equipped Arleigh Burke destroyers of the USN can embark up to 96 missiles and the Ticonderoga cruisers up to 122 missiles of various kinds. The US Carrier battle group would typically be escorted by 4-6 of these AEGIS ships. At present, the RN has no ability to destroy ballistic missiles (anti-ship or otherwise) but there is the potential for the RN to buy the Aster Block 1NT for the Type 45 in future.

3b. Area defence (underwater)

Of all the threats to the CBG, the submarine presents the most danger as they become increasingly quiet and hard to detect. Submarines are usually the best means of finding and sinking other submarines. Of the 7 SSNs possessed by the RN, it would be expected that one will be assigned to protect the CBG (The USN typically assigns 2 SSNs to a carrier group). Usually, the SSN will work as a ‘freelancer’, not especially close to the CGB but in the best tactical position to intecerpt and track hostile ships or submarines. The Merlin Mk2 helicopters operating from the deck of the QEC and the escorts are the only other means of prosecuting submarines (unless ASROC missiles are purchased for the Type 26 Frigates). Finding submarines will be the primary job of the Type 23/26 frigates. Their Type 20xx towed array sonar is the usually the best tool for detection at a safe distance away from the CBG. They will then direct the Merlin to the target which can be localised using its FLASH dipping sonar. The escorts all have bow-mounted sonars but detection ranges in both passive and active modes are usually considerably less than that of the towed array, but which time a submarine could be close enough to have achieved a firing position. Unfortunately, despite the quiet electric motors that propel the Type 45, the QEC and the supporting Tide-class RFAs, they all have noisy diesel engines and auxiliary machinery bolted directly to their hulls. Without dampening measures, this radiates noise and vibration into the water which interferes with sonars and may aid enemy submarines in locating the CSG.

The P-8A Poseidons may also be able to contribute to the ASW effort surrounding the carrier, but this would very much depend on the area of operations.

In broad terms area, defence against submarine and air threats is much easier to conduct in the open ocean. It the littorals close to land and in congested and noisy shallower seas, defence of the carrier becomes significantly harder.

3c. Area defence (surface)

A rather obvious gap in the CSG defences is the lack of medium or long range anti-ship missile carried by the RN’s escorts (from 2018 to around 2030 when the FCGWS project may bear fruit). When the Sea Venom missile comes into service the RN will have an excellent weapon for use against fast attack craft or corvettes, but attacking major warships must be delegated to the F-35s or a supporting submarine.

4. Point defence

Missiles or aircraft that evade the area defences should then encounter the point defence Surface to Air Missile (SAM) systems that protect individual ships or a few ships in close company A point defence SAM would typically have a maximum range of 10-12 nautical miles. The QEC has no point defence system of its own and will entrust this task to its escorting ships. Other navies think differently. The French carrier, Charles de Gaulle is fitted with 16 x Aster 15 SAMs and 2 Sadral SAM launchers. US carriers have both RIM-7 Sea Sparrow SAM and RIM-116 Rolling Airframe SAMs. The new Sea Ceptor SAM fitted to the Type 23/26 frigates looks to be very effective in this role and has significantly greater range than the Sea Wolf system it replaces. The point defence ‘goalkeeping’ mission requires the escort to stay in close touch with the carrier and its arcs of fire may be restricted by the carrier or other ships. At times the frigates may need to operate at some distance away from the carrier in order to deploy towed array sonar and listen for submarines, undisturbed by the self-generated noise of the CSG.

The Type 45 can also provide point defence using its shorter range Aster 15 missiles but the number of ships and available missiles is again the problem. Fitting at least a few Sea Ceptor cells to the QEC would not be especially difficult and this omission has everything to do with saving money and nothing to do with tactical wisdom.

5. Close in weapons systems

The QEC will has a very standard CIWS fit of 3 x 20 mm Block 1B Phallax guns and 4 x 30mm Automated Small Caliber Guns (ASCG). The ubiquitous Phalanx system is used by many navies across the world, is simple and reliable but how it would perform in saturation missile attack is unknown. The ASCGs are cued by electro-optical mounts high on the ship and can be controlled from the ops room. They would probably be very effective against small boat swarm attacks. It is assumed the QEC will also be fitted with a variety of decoy launchers and the Surface Ship Torpedo Defence (SSTD) decoy system. The USN fitting an active variant of SSTD on its carriers that launch mini torpedos to destroy inbound torpedos, rather than just attempt to confuse them.

6. Light weapons and force protection measures

The inner layer of protection consists of a selection of removable M2HB machine guns and Mk44 mini guns on pintle mounts around the ship. On all RN vessels, these weapons are manned on entering or leaving port as protection against attack from small craft or drones. In battle conditions, they may also serve as useful last-ditch defence particularly against aircraft or small boat swarms. Being manually aimed, they are of minimal use against missiles.

7. Damage control and survivability

If the worst happens, the QEC have been carefully designed to withstand significant battle damage. The designers wisely avoided the pressure to reduce costs by cutting corners on construction standards. This kind of protection would be very difficult and expensive to retrofit at a later date and resistance to blast and splinter and flooding provides reassurance that the ship can survive some hits or near misses without catastrophic structural damage and is able to float, move and fight in difficult conditions. The RN is also recognised as a world leader in training its sailors in effective damage control.

Conclusions

This is a whistlestop tour of a very complex subject but this basic assessment shows there are weaknesses that restrict where the QEC could be safely operated without assistance from the US Navy and other NATO nations. By withdrawing from standing commitments, at a stretch, the RN will probably be able to muster 2 destroyers and 3 or 4 frigates to provide sustained escort to the carrier. The QEC and its bare minimum supporting assets do offer the option of mounting an independent British operation but only against a lesser adversary (ie not Russia and certainly not China). Even a ‘Falklands conflict’ style operation would still entail considerable risk, given the slim escort and lack of strength in depth.

No one seriously expects the UK to take on a peer-level opponent alone but beyond the apocalyptic scenario of major state-on-state conflict, the carriers still have huge utility. Even if the RN cannot act independently, the QEC significantly adds to NATO and western naval capability and deterrence which is presently inadequate in the European theatre. The QEC also come with all the other attendant soft-power capabilities such as diplomatic and trade missions, humanitarian and relief operations and the ability to help enforce foreign policy without firing a shot or putting troops on the ground. They are also highly valued by the US who see them as able to plug gaps to relieve pressure on their fleet.

Asked if he expects to operate mostly with coalition warships Cdre Betton said; “Coalition operations are attractive as they spread the burden, and give us a shared authority. But the new carriers are a capability that is sovereign at core and allow us to act unilaterally if we wish”.

HTML, sigla en inglés de HyperText Markup Language (lenguaje de marcas de hipertexto), hace referencia al lenguaje de marcado para la elaboración de páginas web. Es un estándar que sirve de referencia del software que conecta con la elaboración de páginas web en sus diferentes versiones, define una estructura básica y un código (denominado código HTML) para la definición de contenido de una página web, como texto, imágenes, videos, juegos, entre otros. Es un estándar a cargo del World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) o Consorcio WWW, organización dedicada a la estandarización de casi todas las tecnologías ligadas a la web, sobre todo en lo referente a su escritura e interpretación. Se considera el lenguaje web más importante siendo su invención crucial en la aparición, desarrollo y expansión de la World Wide Web (WWW). Es el estándar que se ha impuesto en la visualización de páginas web y es el que todos los navegadores actuales han adoptado

El lenguaje HTML basa su filosofía de desarrollo en la diferenciación. Para añadir un elemento externo a la página (imagen, vídeo, script, entre otros.), este no se incrusta directamente en el código de la página, sino que se hace una referencia a la ubicación de dicho elemento mediante texto. De este modo, la página web contiene solamente texto mientras que recae en el navegador web (interpretador del código) la tarea de unir todos los elementos y visualizar la página final. Al ser un estándar, HTML busca ser un lenguaje que permita que cualquier página web escrita en una determinada versión, pueda ser interpretada de la misma forma (estándar) por cualquier navegador web actualizado.

Sin embargo, a lo largo de sus diferentes versiones, se han incorporado y suprimido diversas características, con el fin de hacerlo más eficiente y facilitar el desarrollo de páginas web compatibles con distintos navegadores y plataformas (PC de escritorio, portátiles, teléfonos inteligentes, tabletas, vipers etc.) No obstante, para interpretar correctamente una nueva versión de HTML, los desarrolladores de navegadores web deben incorporar estos cambios y el usuario debe ser capaz de usar la nueva versión del navegador con los cambios incorporados. Normalmente los cambios son aplicados mediante parches de actualización automática (Firefox, Chrome) u ofreciendo una nueva versión del navegador con todos los cambios incorporados, en un sitio web de descarga oficial (Internet Explorer). Por lo que un navegador desactualizado no será capaz de interpretar correctamente una página web escrita en una versión de HTML superior a la que pueda interpretar, lo que obliga muchas veces a los desarrolladores a aplicar técnicas y cambios que permitan corregir problemas de visualización e incluso de interpretación de código HTML. Así mismo, las páginas escritas en una versión anterior de HTML deberían ser actualizadas o reescritas, lo que no siempre se cumple. <html>: define el inicio del documento HTML, le indica al navegador que lo que viene a continuación debe ser interpretado como código HTML. Esto es así de facto, ya que en teoría lo que define el tipo de documento es el DOCTYPE, que significa la palabra justo tras DOCTYPE el tag de raíz.

<head>: define la cabecera del documento HTML; esta cabecera suele contener información sobre el documento que no se muestra directamente al usuario como, por ejemplo, el título de la ventana del navegador. Dentro de la cabecera <head> es posible encontrar:

<body>: define el contenido principal o cuerpo del documento. Esta es la parte del documento html que se muestra en el navegador; dentro de esta etiqueta pueden definirse propiedades comunes a toda la página, como color de fondo y márgenes. Dentro del cuerpo <body> es posible encontrar numerosas etiquetas. A continuación se indican algunas a modo de ejemplo:

<title>: define el título de la página. Por lo general, el título aparece en la barra de título encima de la ventana.

<article>: Representa una composición auto-contenida en un documento, página, una aplicación o en el sitio, que se destina a distribuir de forma independiente o re-utilizable.

Colores para HTML[editar]

Hay muchas formas de ponerle color a una página web con el lenguaje HTML, una de ellas es poner el siguiente atributo a un elemento: style="background-color: green" y el fondo se hará de color verde, aunque no se recomienda. La mejor solución es usar hojas de estilo . Otro caso sería añadir estilos a la letra, veamos un ejemplo: Texto de prueba y así la letra se pondrá de color verde.

El lenguaje HTML puede ser creado y editado con cualquier editor de textos básico, como puede ser Gedit en GNU/Linux, el Bloc de notas de Windows, o cualquier otro editor que admita texto sin formato como GNU Emacs, Microsoft Wordpad, TextPad, Vim, Notepad++, entre otros.

Existen, además, otros editores para la realización de sitios web con características WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get, o en español: «lo que ves es lo que obtienes»). Estos editores permiten ver el resultado de lo que se está editando en tiempo real, a medida que se va desarrollando el documento. Ahora bien, esto no significa una manera distinta de realizar sitios web, sino que una forma un tanto más simple, ya que estos programas, además de tener la opción de trabajar con la vista preliminar, tiene su propia sección HTML, la cual va generando todo el código a medida que se va trabajando. Algunos ejemplos de editores WYSIWYG son KompoZer, Microsoft FrontP

HTML utiliza etiquetas o marcas, que consisten en breves instrucciones de comienzo y final, mediante las cuales se determina la forma en la que debe aparecer en su navegador el texto, así como también las imágenes y los demás elementos, en la pantalla del ordenador.

Toda etiqueta se identifica porque está encerrada entre los signos menor que y mayor que (<>), y algunas tienen atributos que pueden tomar algún valor. En general las etiquetas se aplicarán de dos formas especiales:

Se abren y se cierran, como por ejemplo: <b>negrita</b>, que se vería en su navegador web como negrita.

No pueden abrirse y cerrarse, como <hr />, que se vería en su navegador web como una línea horizontal.

Otras que pueden abrirse y cerrarse, como por ejemplo <p>.

Las etiquetas básicas o mínimas son:

<!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <title>Ejemplo1</title> </head> <body> <p>Párrafo de ejemplo</p> </body> </html>

Aprender HTML analizando páginas reales[editar]

Seleccionando la opción «ver código fuente» en el navegador, se puede ver realmente la información que está recibiendo el navegador web y cómo la está interpretando.

Por ejemplo: en Internet Explorer o en Firefox, simplemente hay que desplegar el menú «ver» y luego elegir «código fuente», mientras que en Chrome presionar Ctrl+U. De esta forma, se abrirá el editor de texto configurado como predeterminado en el sistema con el código fuente de la página que se esté viendo en ese momento en el explorador. Otra forma más rápida consiste en hacer clic con el botón derecho del ratón en cualquier punto del área donde el navegador muestra la página web y elegir «ver código fuente».

Aparte de poder ver el código fuente HTML de una página web con las opciones antes descritas, Internet Explorer, Firefox y Google Chrome incorporan también unas herramientas conocidas como inspectores de página que se puede activar con F12.

Con estas herramientas es posible visualizar una página web y seleccionar dentro de ella un elemento concreto del cuál queremos conocer cuál es el código HTML con el que está hecho señalando el elemento en cuestión simplemente con el ratón. Al hacer esto, el código se mostrará en un área especial dentro del navegador en el que el usuario podrá ver el código HTML en cuestión (ver imagen), además, de las reglas CSS que aplican a ese código HTML en concreto. Este tipo de análisis resulta sumamente instructivo para aprender a desarrollar en HTML.

Para el navegador Firefox, además, existe como alternativa a la herramienta nativa el plugin Firebug, muy similar a la herramienta que Firefox incorpora por defecto.

In 2009, I was involved in a near fatal car crash when an oncoming car made an unsafe left turn in front of my vehicle, nearly killing me. This life changing incident was a blessing. It forced me to slow down and really assess how I was living and experiencing my life. This near-death experience revealed to me the need to be creative on a much higher level and really contribute to this planet.

At the time of my car crash, I was working as a C-Level executive in the creative ad agency world and working with some of the most successful brands in the world. I enjoyed the work and it was a creative avenue. However, the car crash left me asking questions about how I was living, how I was spending my time and what I wanted to experience out of this life.

It took every ounce of determination and perseverance along with physical and mental therapy over 5 years to restore my body and mind enough to enjoy any physical activities again. Also during this time is when I truly fell in love with photography.

I had always enjoyed taking pictures but this was different. It was like a burning desire to explore. I had always loved travel and adventures along with various forms of visual storytelling. I wanted to find a way to combine the two passions of mine. I bought my first real camera (a Canon 5D Mark III) and began to experiment. I stayed up many, many nights until the early hours of the morning watching tutorials and basically learning anything I could off the Internet about how my camera actually worked and what it was capable of.

I started toying around with long exposure, understanding light and compositional elements. I kept working with the technical elements and experimenting with different techniques. Finally, I was getting somewhere, this is when I realized how much of an impact shooting nature and landscapes had on me.

My journey began. I started an Instagram account, then started traveling more and testing more and more camera gear. I snapped hundreds of photographs, each time adjusting and applying what I had learned. Bringing new techniques to my photo composition. I began to make connections online with some talented photographers and also began partaking in photographer groups and photo meet ups. It felt like it was all coming together. Even if this was just to inspire a few of my friends and family to get out and enjoy nature, it seemed worth it.

I really didn’t have a particular goal in mind. I just recall that I wanted to explore some less charted territory and grab some cool photos. I began to research places to explore. I had heard of this cave in Vietnam called Hang Son Doong. It had been explored but only by a few people. I started to do some research and look into this adventure in more detail.

I learned that the Vietnam government only allows a certain number of permits annually to explore inside and strict rules of what you can and can’t do while in the cave. They even send 2 government representatives with anybody going inside the cave to ensure you comply keeping the ecosystem untouched and environment protected.

There is only one group authorized to take people through this cave. I reached out to them and managed to secure a spot with a team. They recommended, due to the extreme nature of this expedition, that I train 6 months prior and meticulously prepare for the jungle terrain of mountain trekking, 47 river crossings, bouldering, tunnels, rock climbing, deadly green viper snakes and leeches.

Hang Son Doong Cave which means “Mountain River Cave” located in Vietnam. What makes this cave so unique is more people have been on the summit of Mount Everest than inside this massive cave. Less than 800 explorers have been inside this cave making it a rare photography opportunity.

The cave is the largest known cave in the world. According to the British Cave Experts that accompanied us on the expedition with their combined experience of 60 years explained “there is no cave in the world this beautiful with lush green do-line openings”. The cave experts accompany us for safety and ensure environmental and ecosystem compliance.

The cave and its massive structure is 200 meters (656ft) wide and 150 meters (492ft) high and up to 10km (~6mi) deep (what’s known, that is). What makes this cave so unique also is its hard to get to location. We had to be dropped off in the middle of the Vietnam Jungle where we trek 10 to 12km per day through 47 river crossings, up and down mountain ranges, through heavy jungle brush, avoiding green cobra snakes, avoiding leeches and repelling/descending 90 meters (~295ft) inside the pitch black opening to the cave.

I trained as much as I could. Rock climbing and many hikes. I spent months preparing with essentials I would need incase something went wrong. With this expedition, I knew we would be wet for 3 days and semi dry for 2 days. I also knew the only light we would have is our headlamps which wouldn’t give much time to adjust things incase the need arose.

One of the trickiest things about this type of expedition is the climate:

Lenses fog

Constantly covered in grit

Lenses get gritty

Cameras get gritty

Cameras can fail

Lenses fog more

Batteries drain

No light

Hard to light scenes with limited light

Cameras get banged around

Trying to stay stable and not fall off a cliff while snapping some photos

Carrying all your gear (9-11 kg) for 60 KM and 5 days through some of the hardest wet terrain

And most of all, getting your settings correct so the photos can look half decent for any sponsors or clients.

Realizing we are at least 4-5 days from any civilization, safety must be our number one concern before embarking upon a 5 day physically and mentally demanding journey through the Vietnam jungle.

Day 1

After being dropped off in the middle of the jungle, we will reach the trailhead, where we’ll start trekking for approximately 1-2 hours downhill through the forest, which is quite steep at times. We walk for half an hour along a small stream to the minority village of Ban Doong, which is a real highlight on this expedition. We will eat and learn more about this unique ethnic group of people while enjoying lunch beside a small river. These local villagers lives many miles from any civilization and live completely off the land. They are extremely strong survivors. One time during a massive flood they were forced to live in a tree with their entire families for 10 days due to flooding. All they lived off was leaves.

After this point, we will be in the sun all afternoon with about 4 hours along a river, with very little shade. We’ll cross the river many times and have wet feet for the whole day.

Well then reach the entrance to Hang En Cave, home to thousands of swifts. We will use a headlight and you will trek/boulder approximately 20-30 mins to set up a campsite inside the cave and take some shots. After dinner a steep climb up boulders for some night shots.

Day 2

Up at 5:45 AM Passing through Hang En Cave to reach the magnificent exit, we then scramble down to the river valley and then it’s an hour walk through the river, so our boots are going to be wet for most of the day; it is unavoidable, yet part of the fun.

We’ll then start climbing a steep mountain for about 2 hours with some rocky sections to start. At the top of the mountain we will enjoy lunch and fit our safety harness and prepare to go underground. A steep descent with a couple of short rope climbs brings us at last to Son Doong entrance.

We then start the 90 M descent into the cave by making a number of short climbs, using ropes and safety lines. We then enjoy a few more climbs and bouldering to reach the first and second river crossings inside the cave, which are knee-to-thigh deep depending on the water levels.

On our way to the first campsite location in the first large passage of the cave, we need to be extra careful as there are a number of big drops and scrambling over boulders along a rocky path before reaching one of the most spectacular views: Hand of Dog and daylight streaming through the cave. We will then scramble down to the first campsite of Son Doong around 3 – 4 pm and have the afternoon to soak up the views, snap some pics and rest our bodies.

Day 3

Up at 5:45 AM after breakfast we start with some rocky climbs, which are dangerously steep in some places, as we reach the first jungle within the cave at Watch Out for Dinosaurs. It will take about 1.5 hrs to travel within the cave from Camp 1 to Watch Out for Dinosaurs. After a short break we will be trotting down the rocky path to reach the enormous Green Do-Lines, one of the most magnificent spots. Hoping to catch sunbeams there.

It is then a trek through the cave past gigantic formations and plenty of cave pearls towards the light of the second doline and main jungle within the cave. Follow the path past the beautiful foliage reaching towards the light, to reach the underground jungle, unlike anything we could experience on the planet! We cross the jungle for around 1 hour to reach the steep and sometimes slippery path down to our second campsite location within Son Doong Cave.

After a short rest at the campsite, we are back on our feet and trekking deeper within the cave towards the Great Wall of Vietnam. We then pass through a very large dry passage with huge stalagmites and unbelievable views back toward the second doline. Many new creepy crawlies have been discovered within this passage including white spiders, fish, woodlouse and shrimp species so we might make a few friends.

We then reach at this point either a very large beautiful underground lake (where we then paddle to reach the Great Wall of Vietnam) or we will find a fantastically adventurous muddy pit (at which you will need to trudge your way through for a few hundred meters to reach the wall).

Day 4

Up at 5:45 AM. We pack up camp and start heading back to the first doline, with a slightly different route through a small oxbow passage above the underground river in which there is a very steep drop into darkness that we can’t even see the bottom. We use our harnesses, rope and safety line.

Once we have reached the first campsite around 11 am, we will have time for a short break before climbing down to the ancient fossil passage, where we will witness 350 million year old coral fossils. Finally, we enjoy a small wash in the pools and a big lunch before descending back to the main passage, crossing the river twice and proceeding to rock climb up the 90 meter (~295ft) wet slippery rocks to the entrance of Hans Son Doong.

Day 5

Wake up at 5:45 AM, pack up camp and start our 10 km trek back to Road 20 after breakfast. We will follow the river along the valley and back through Ban Doong Village. We will be fueling up before starting on what is quite a difficult steep climb back up the mountain for the last 2 hours of this expedition. Once back at the Ho Chi Minh highway highway we have a ride arranged to pick us up and take us back to civilization where we can eat and take a long hot shower.

After this I took a shower went to meet my team to eat an amazingly tasty authentic Vietnamese feast while we all sat quietly reflecting. It was hard to put into words what we all felt being engulfed inside a massive mountain and seeing earth’s amazing wonders first hand. Many of us were emotional leaving this glorious cave.

If anything, what I want to convey with this article is that no matter what you do in life always follow your heart to lead toward your passions. Live every day as though it was your last and make it count. It will be the most rewarding thing your soul will ever experience and will live with you forever.
