So I have been massively burnt out this year, partly due to illness and separation stress, but I have been trying to do all the self-care things that I encourage people to do when you’re trying to make a brain be well, and one of those is writing fiction.

Just short fiction, because my brain balks at the idea of picking up the really big, long neglected projects. But short fiction is still fiction and if I write enough of it, then maybe I’ll build up enough momentum to pick up the bigger projects again.

So I thought that maybe if I can write enough fiction, because there’s a bit of horror flavour running though these pieces, I could narrate them for YouTube and work on the momentum for yet another project that fell by the wayside between the MS, relationship breakdown and single parenting.

Which is why I searched for ‘how to run a scary stories YouTube channel’.

And boy oh boy did that induce some rage.

I genuinely hold the art of writing in high regard, and I recognise that it’s a learned skill and difficult to do. All creative pastimes are. But there are a bunch of ‘entrepreneurs’, and I use the term with a great deal of sarcasm, that have decided to use A-Bloody-I for every single part of telling a story, except one. And for that single piece that they do not outsource to a computer program, they simply copy what has worked for other people.

There are videos providing instructions for people about how to use A-Bloody-I to:

Generate a YouTube channel name, banner and profile picture

Generate a story of the desired word length

Generate a fake voice to narrate that story

Generate a background image and thumbnail

At which point why did they even bother? They don’t even listen to the story that they generate before uploading. I know it’s all about the dream of money, they think 5 minutes of work every day will earn them an income, but what they have generated is soulless garbage.

The results have all the dressings of a horror story, but they don’t have the body of one.

It is like fae realm food- looks a little too good and all the reflections are wrong if you look too close, but it won’t satisfy the way the real thing does. You can’t really live off it.

But the more I know to look for it, the more of it I find. Particularly with fake voices, that seem to have trouble with words like vague or Dalek for some reason.

My main solace here is that these ‘entrepreneurs’ seem to be employing the same strategy in their own niche, flooding themselves with endless AI generated content coming from the same one idea, so at least they get to create their own hell I suppose.

My Itch.io and Ko-fi - both sell digital versions of my books, including some creepypasta collections and my first novel, "Return of the Living," about a world of entirely ghosts suddenly dealing with the appearance of ghost-hunting monsters.

Best of YouTube 2023

Yes, I did spend the first week and change of January on this. I wish I could have had it done for New Years, but too many people came out with incredible work in December, so waiting turned out for the best.

What these creators do are a huge influence on my life, I would honestly have difficulty doing what I do without them. That isn't to say that my favorites of the year are *only* on this image--It was almost impossible to narrow down my favorites. Many creators I wanted to include couldn't fit on a single page, and too many of them made more than one video I wished I could draw too!

But, to all of you, thank you for what you do. You're an inspiration.

For those who don't know, further is an explanation.

At the bottom center is an artistic masterpiece by Defunctland: "Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History." Over the last several years, Defunctland has risen from delightfully-entertaining commentary on decommissioned theme park attractions to occasionally dropping profound statements on the creation of art itself. "Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History" is worth treating like the cinematic experience it is: No second screen, you sit your ass down in front of a TV, set down the phone, and then you *watch it.* Any Disney, theme park, or independent film fan needs to pay attention to this one.

Bottom left is Caelan Conrad with their piece "Drop the T - The Deadly Consequences of Gay Respectability Politics." While I do think they've done more visually or artistically-daring pieces before, "Drop the T" is one of the most important videos released on YouTube in today's current climate of hate. We as queer folk (and our allies) need to understand how integral every identity of the queer experience has been since the start of the Civil Rights movement (and before!). While we are not identical, we *are* inseparable, and we deserve having our real history easily accessible.

TERFs and other conservative mouthpieces need not reply. Your opinions are trash. 😘

I cannot stop watching and rewatching this video by @patricia-taxxon, "On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People." It's not just a defense of furry fandom and its eccentricities, it's a thoughtful and passionate analysis of what the artform achieves that purely human representation can't. Patricia goes outside of her usual essay format to directly speak to the viewer about the elements that define furry media (the most succinct definition I've ever heard) and just how *human* an act loving animal cartoons really is.

As an artist who can draw furry characters, but never really got into erotic furry art, this video is a treasure. Why did I choose to have her drawn as a Ghibli character, hanging out with one of the tanukis from "Pom Poko?" Guess you'll have to watch, bruh.

Philosophy Tube continuously puts out videos that I would put on this list--I'm not even sure that "A Man Plagiarised my Work: Women, Money, and the Nation" is the best work she released in 2023. However, this video got many conversations going between myself and my partner, and the twist on the tail end of the video shocked us both to such a degree that I had no choice.

At the very tail end of the year, Big Joel released "Fear of Death." On his Little Joel channel, he described it as the singularly best video he's ever done, and I'm inclined to agree. However, for this illustration, I ended up repeatedly going back to a mini-series he did earlier in the year: "Three Stories at the End of the World." All three videos are deeply moving and haunting, and I was brought to tears by "We Must Destroy What the Bomb Cannot." While it may be relatively-common knowledge that the original Gojira (Godzilla) film is horror grappling with the devastation America's rush to atomic dominance inflicted on Japan, Big Joel still manages to bring new words to the discussion. Please watch all three of the videos, but if, for some reason, you must have only one, let it be "We Must Destroy What the Bomb Cannot."

Y'all. Let me confess something. I hate football. I hate watching it, I associate seeing it from the stadiums with some of my worst childhood experiences, I despise collegiate and professional football (as institutions that destroy bodies and offer up children at the feet of its alter as a pillar of American culture)--

I. L o a t h e. Football.

But.

F.D. Signifier could get me to watch an entire hour-plus essay on why I should at least give a passing care. AND HE DID IT. I might think "F*ck the Police," the two-parter on Black conservatism, or his essay on Black men's connection to anime might be "better" videos, but this writer did the impossible and held my limited attention span towards football long enough to make a sincere case for NFL players--and reminds us that millionaires can *in fact* be workers. That alone is testament to his skill.

Sit down and watch "The REAL Reason NFL Running Backs Aren't Getting Paid." Any good anti-capitalist owes it to themselves.

CJ the X continuously puts out stunning, emotional videos, and can do it with the most seemingly-inconsequential starting points. A 30 second song? An incestuous commercial? Five minutes of Tangled? Sure, why not. Go destroy yourself emotionally by watching them. I'm serious. Do it.

Their video Stranger Things and the Meaning of Life manages to to remind us all why the way we react to media does, in fact, matter. Yes, even nostalgia-driven, mass-media schlock. Yes, how we interact with media matters, what it says about us matters, and we all deserve to seek out the whys.

Folding Ideas has spent the last few years articulating exactly why so much of our modern world feels broken, and because of that his voice continuously lives rent-free in my brain. While the tricks that scam artists and grifters use to try to swindle us are never new, the advancement of technology changes the aesthetics of their performances. Portions of Folding Ideas' explanations might seem dry when going into detail of how stocks work in This is Financial Advice, but every bit of it is necessary to peel back the layers of techno-babble and jargon and make sense of the results of "Meme Stocks."

Jessie Gender puts out nothing but bangers, her absolute unit of a video about Star Wars might be my new favorite thing ever, but none of her work hit so profoundly in 2023 than the two-parter "The Myth of 'Male Socialization'" and "The Trauma of Masculinity." There's so much about modern life that isolates and traumatizes us, and so much of it is just shrugged off as "normal." We owe it to ourselves to see the world in more vivid a color palette than we're initially given.

"This is Not a Video Essay" is one of the most intense and beautiful pieces of art I've ever put into my eyeballs. Why do we create? What drives us to connect?

I don't even know what else to say about the Leftist Cooks' work, it repeatedly transcends the medium and platform. Watch every single one of their videos, but especially this one.

The likelihood you are terminally online and yet haven't heard of Hbomberguy's yearly forrays into destroying the careers of awful people is pretty slim. Just because it has millions of views doesn't mean that Hbomberguy's "Plagiarism and You(Tube)" isn't worth the hype. Too long? Shut up, it has chapters and YouTube holds your place, anyway. You think a deep dive into a handful of creators is only meaningless drama? Well, you're wrong, you wrong-opinion-haver. Plagiarism is an *everyone* problem because of the actual harm it creates--the history it erases, the labor it devalues, the art it marginalizes--which you would know if you watched "Plagiarism and You(Tube)".

It was chaos, but it worked.

“Why the fuck is your camera quality so good?” Ronin drawled, tilting his head. His devilish grin stretched wide, all sharp teeth and chaotic energy barely contained behind lazy amusement.

“You like it?” You batted your lashes. “It’s a 4K Ultra HD ‘You Suck at Stealth’ Experience.”

Ronin chuckled, low and rich. “Yeah? That why I hear you screaming in surround sound?”

Your face burned. “Shut up.”

“No, no, I’m serious,” he continued, eyes glinting with sadistic amusement. “I got into the server earlier, and guess what I find? Some random clip of you absolutely losing your shit in a horror game. I mean—flailing, screeching, actual banshee-level wailing.”

You deadpanned. “Oh, cool. You found the documentary of my suffering.”

He sighed dramatically. “And here I thought you were fearless.”

“Oh, no, babe.” You grinned. “I’m a coward with a loud mouth. There’s a difference.”

Ronin barked out a laugh. “Yeah? And what’s stopping me from tracking you down and seeing this horror for myself?”

You clicked your tongue. “Please. If you find out where I live, the scariest thing you’ll see is my sleep schedule.”

“Oooh, threats.” He leaned in, eyes narrowing. “You sure you should be teasing the Devil, sweetheart?”

“Ronin, babe.” You mimicked his tone. “I literally watched you stab a man on a livestream last week. What’s a little teasing gonna do?”

His grin widened.

Oh, he liked that.

“God, you really are a little menace,” he mused, tilting his head. “I should punish you for keeping secrets, y’know. What kind of lover doesn’t tell their beloved their little YouTube identity?”

You huffed. “One that enjoys making you suffer.”

He laughed again, full-bodied, delighted. “You’re lucky I like suffering.”

“I’m not telling you my YouTube name,” you said, grinning as you leaned back in your chair. “Figure it out yourself, Detective.”

Ronin hummed, amused. “Oh? Now that sounds like a challenge.”

“Oh, I got a real challenge for you.” You wagged a finger at the screen. “How about you put your money where your blood-stained mouth is and play a horror game with me?”

His eyes sparked with interest. “You wanna play with the Devil, sweetheart?”

“Only if you can handle it.” You smirked. “We’re playing Death by Daylight.”

Ronin’s smile stretched slow and sharp, his voice a velvet purr. “Oh, you are a little menace.”

You grabbed your headset and console, cackling as you loaded up the game. The moment the match started, you were fine—laughing, cracking jokes, and doing your best to not be absolute garbage at surviving.

Until.

Until Ronin was the Hunter.

And you? You were one of the unlucky little Survivors.

It started off fun. You ran around, trying to fix generators, dodging traps, bullying NPCs with flashlight spam. But then? Oh, then. He started chasing you.

You turned a corner and—BOOM!

“OH MY FUCKING GOD—” You shrieked, throwing your controller. “WHAT THE FUCK?! NO—NOPE—”

Ronin’s deep, sadistic laughter filled your headset.

“Oh, sweetheart,” he crooned, voice dripping with mock sympathy. “Where ya runnin’?”

You SPRINTED. FULL SPEED.

“WHY ARE YOU SO FAST?! WHAT THE FUCK—”

“You’re screaming a lot,” Ronin said, chasing you effortlessly. “Scared?”

“NO, I’M JUST PRACTICING FOR WHEN I EVENTUALLY DIE!”

He cackled. “Oh, baby, you’re making this too fun.”

You threw a pallet down. He smashed through it like a goddamn movie villain.

“WHAT THE FUCK?!”

“Oh, sweetheart,” Ronin sang, voice pure menace. “You think you can hide from the Devil?”

You DOVE into a locker. Immediate regret.

Silence.

You held your breath.

The locker door creaked open.

“Peek-a-boo.”

“FUCKING—”

You flailed so hard your headset almost flew off. “STOP! STOP! I HAVE A FAMILY—”

“No, you don’t,” Ronin deadpanned. “I checked.”

“WHAT THE FUCK?!”

“Mm. Shouldn’t have let me in the server, sweetheart.” He grabbed you—instant down.

Your soul left your body.

Ronin chuckled, dark and low, dragging your poor, helpless character to the hook.

“Well, well,” he purred. “Looks like the Devil wins.”

You groaned, dramatically slumping in your chair. “Bro, you are the worst.”

“I know,” he said smoothly. “And you love it.”

…Fucking hell, you did.

“Ohhh, you’re fucked now.” You grinned, cracking your knuckles as the second match loaded up.

Ronin chuckled, the sound low and amused. “Oh? That so, sweetheart?”

“Damn right. I’m the hunter now.” You leaned forward, eyes gleaming. “Time to see how fast you can run, Devil.”

The match started. You spawned in, weapon in hand, heart pounding with the thrill of the hunt. The tables had turned.

Ronin was a Survivor.

And you? You were about to make him scream.

You stalked the map, watching for movement, bloodlust thrumming in your veins. Then, you saw him.

Ronin, crouched near a generator, totally unaware.

You licked your lips.

“Ohhh, what do we have here?”

His head snapped up. You charged.

“OH—FUCK ME—”

Ronin bolted.

“COME HERE, YOU LITTLE BITCH!”

He cackled, dodging around a tree. “Damn, sweetheart, I didn’t know you were this bloodthirsty.”

You launched after him, voice pitching into insanity. “OH, I’M COMING FOR THAT ASS.”

He barely dodged your swing. “You say that like I’m supposed to be scared.”

“You should be, because I’m about to shove this weapon so far up your—”

“WHOA, WHOA—” Ronin wheezed with laughter, vaulting over a window.

You sprinted after him. “YOU CAN’T OUTRUN ME, DEVIL—I’VE BEEN TRAINING FOR THIS SINCE I LEARNED TO CRAWL.”

Ronin howled with laughter. “You’re outta your goddamn mind—”

“Oh, YOU THINK?!” You lunged, barely missing him. “I AM UNHINGED! I AM THE NIGHT!”

Ronin snorted. “You’re a fucking gremlin.”

“I’M YOUR GREMLIN, NOW HOLD STILL AND LET ME KILL YOU.”

He darted through a cabin, knocking over obstacles. “Gotta catch me first, sweetheart.”

“OH, I WILL. AND WHEN I DO, I’M GONNA—”

CRASH.

You slammed into a door.

Silence.

Ronin lost it.

“NO FUCKING WAY—DID YOU JUST—”

You groaned, voice muffled. “I AM SO TIRED OF THIS BULLSHIT.”

His laughter echoed through your headset, genuine, unrestrained. “Sweetheart, I think you just killed yourself harder than I ever could.”

“I swear to GOD, RONIN—”

“Oh, you sound mad,” he teased. “You okay? Need me to call the cops?”

“BITCH, YOU’RE A SERIAL KILLER—”

He chuckled darkly. “Exactly. So, why didn’t you call them?”

You froze.

“…What.”

“You had so many opportunities.”

The game continued around you, but you didn’t move. The hairs on your arms stood up.

Ronin’s voice was low, dangerous, smug. “What’s the matter, sweetheart?”

Your heart skipped. He was playing. He had to be. Right?

Your mouth opened. Closed. Then—

“…Man, shut your ass up and get back here so I can murder you.”

This was bullshit.

Ronin was built different. He was fucking carrying this match like he was speedrunning it for world records, and you were seething. Every time you got close—**every damn time—**he’d pull some stupid anime protagonist bullshit dodge and sprint off like the wind was whispering cheats into his ear.

And the worst part? He was laughing.

Laughing his whole ass off while you fumbled around like a drunk toddler with a knife.

“Nah, nah—ain’t no way, sweetheart!” Ronin wheezed, dodging another swing with the smoothness of someone who was quite literally used to running for his life.

Your controller creaked in your grip. “I HOPE YOUR PILLOW IS ALWAYS WARM AS FUCK.”

“WHAT?!” He cackled.

“YEAH, YOU HEARD ME, YOU SLIPPERY LITTLE BITCH.” You lunged again—missed. “I HOPE EVERY TIME YOU PUT YOUR SOCKS ON, THEY’RE JUST A LITTLE BIT DAMP.”

Ronin stumbled from laughing too hard. “SWEETHEART—”

“NAH, SHUT YOUR MURDEROUS ASS UP. I HOPE EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU TAKE A SHOWER, YOU FORGET TO BRING A TOWEL.”

He vaulted over another fucking window.

You saw red.

“I HOPE YOUR FAVORITE SHOW GETS CANCELLED ON A CLIFFHANGER, YOU PIECE OF SHIT—”

Ronin was gasping, struggling to run through his unhinged laughter. “WHY ARE YOU—WHEEZING—LIKE THIS?”

“I HOPE EVERY TIME YOU GET COMFORTABLE, SOMEONE CALLS YOUR NAME FROM THE OTHER ROOM.”

“OH MY GOD—”

You sprinted after him, rage fueling your every move. “I HOPE EVERY TIME YOU HEAR MUSIC, IT’S A LOOP OF A SONG THAT NEVER HITS THE CHORUS.”

“YOU ARE EVIL.”

You SWUNG. Missed. Again.

Ronin yelped, still running. “YOU CAN’T TOUCH ME—I AM SPEED.”

The VC erupted in chaos.

Ronin snickered, shaking his head. "You know, if they just let the demon have its way, we’d probably be done with the game by now."

But you weren’t backing down. No way.

You turned toward the door, and the puzzle had finally clicked. You solved the issue.

"Alright, fuck this shit. I’m out. I beat it, I solved the goddamn mystery, and I’m gonna go cry in a corner like the rest of us would."

The video ended abruptly with you standing in front of the door. Then came the outro, as usual.

Without another word, Ronin opened up another game.

This time, it was "The Haunting of Abaddon Manor."

The title screen was eerie—dark, sepia tones, a decrepit mansion surrounded by fog, the kind of game that oozed dread from the get-go.

Ronin clicked to begin the game, his fingers dancing across the keys as he casually glanced back at the chat, anticipating the reactions.

"Alright, alright, ladies and gents, we're about to enter Abaddon Manor. It's got everything: creepy ghosts, insane-asylum vibes, and the worst part? There's a demonic doll lurking somewhere. I don’t trust dolls, y’all. They definitely have something to hide."

Misaki: "I don't even trust dolls in real life, bro. Like, how does something so small, with no moving parts, look so evil?"

Luca: "I’m not even playing and I'm already scared."

Ronin chuckled darkly, adjusting his headset. "Well, buckle up. We’re about to do the demon doll dance, whether we like it or not."

He dove in, leading the way through the haunted manor. The atmosphere was thick, every creak and moan of the old house seeming to whisper threats into the air.

The first jumpscare hit.

Ronin screamed, his voice cracking slightly. But as soon as the horrifying shadow darted across the screen, he laughed. A long, maniacal laugh. "Goddamn, that one was actually pretty good."

You could feel your skin burn, a wave of absolute embarrassment hitting you like a freight train. "Ronin, what the FUCK, no!"

"Oh, it’s too late for that. You’re already famous now, darling. You’re mine. Ours."

You could hear the smirk in his voice as it oozed into every word.

The others?

They were laughing, but their laughter was mixed with a touch of shock.

Misaki was the first to shout. "NO WAY. BRO."

Luca’s voice was tinged with disbelief. "Y/N’S CHANNEL IS THE ONE WITH OVER TWO MILLION SUBSCRIBERS? THE FUCK—"

Angel snorted. "Holy shit, and I thought I had a good sense of humor."

Felicite raised an eyebrow. "No wonder you're so... unpredictable."

V, in his usual deadpan tone, simply said, "This was a mistake."

But Ronin was having the time of his life. His eyes sparkled with malicious glee as he leaned forward, eager to reveal every unhinged thing you'd ever said on your channel.

"Don’t worry, baby. This is just the beginning. You’re gonna love it."

You groaned, the shame creeping up your spine like an ice-cold knife. "Fuck you, Ronin!"

His only response was a laugh, deep and menacing. "Hell, sweetheart. You’re mine. We’re all gonna watch."

You sat there, staring at your screen in absolute betrayal, feeling your soul physically leave your body as Ronin continued grinning like the bastard he was.

You tried everything—leaving the voice chat, shutting off your mic, even throwing your headset across the room like a dramatic anime protagonist—but nothing could erase the unholy shame burning inside you.

Your channel. Your secret, your baby, the thing you had kept hidden from Ronin this entire time.

And he found it.

And worse, he was showing everyone.

"You—fucking—I— WHY."

Ronin chuckled, his voice oozing smugness. "What’s wrong, sweetheart? Cat got your tongue?"

"Cat got my—!? YOU—!" You let out the most pitiful wail, genuine tears of mortification well up in your eyes. "You—YOU BULLIED ME. I’M BEING CYBERBULLIED IN REAL TIME."

Angel, being the only one with a heart in this godforsaken hellhole, immediately jumped in. "Aww, Y/N, honey, nooo, don’t cry," she cooed, mothering you instantly.

"HE EXPOSED ME, ANGEL!" you sniffled dramatically, clinging onto your last shred of dignity. "MY SECRET, MY FAME, MY HORROR GAMER LEGACY—RUINED."

Angel patted your metaphorical head. "I know, sweetie, I know. He’s an asshole. A MENACE."

Ronin gasped, placing a hand over his chest in fake offense. "Angel, babe, I’m standing right here."

"GOOD," you sobbed, "Fucking cry about it."

Misaki, of course, was no help. "Pffft—oh my god. I can’t tell if Y/N is actually crying or if this is the funniest breakdown I’ve ever witnessed."

Luca was also losing his mind, barely breathing between wheezes. "Bro, this is actual harassment. Call the cops. Oh wait, you can’t. We're all criminals."

Even Felicite, who was normally the reasonable one, was giggling into her mic. "Y/N, come on, you have to admit—this is hilarious."

"NO, IT’S NOT." you hiccupped, burying your face in your hands. "MY LIFE IS OVER. I CAN’T GO ON."

Angel continued rubbing your back (spiritually, since this was a voice chat). "There, there, sweetheart. Let it all out."

Ronin, meanwhile, was still laughing his ass off, but there was something else in his voice—something genuinely amused.

"Aw, come on, darlin’," he drawled, voice drenched in teasing affection. "You’re acting like I just leaked your government files or some shit."

"YOU MIGHT AS WELL HAVE!"

Another round of laughter erupted in the VC.

"Come on, look at the bright side," Ronin continued, his tone dripping with amusement. "Now I get to witness the absolute insanity you put your poor subscribers through."

Misaki gasped dramatically. "Wait, wait, hold up. You mean to tell me Y/N has been saying this level of bullshit on a public platform for literal years, and we’re just now finding out!?"

Luca snorted. "The fact that people are willingly subscribed to this brand of insanity is crazy to me."

"EXCUSE ME," you snapped, sniffling, gaining the tiniest bit of your spine back. "I have millions of subscribers who adore me, thank you very much. Unlike your asses, they support me."

Ronin grinned. "Oh, I support you, darling. I just like watching you suffer while I do it."

"FUCK YOU, RONIN."

"I mean, yeah, but I feel like this ain’t the time for that convo, sweetheart," he purred.

"I HATE YOU SO MUCH."

Ronin just laughed, the kind of laugh that made your stomach flip because it was so genuinely delighted. Like he was actually having the time of his life messing with you.

"You love me," he said, grinning.

Angel clicked her tongue. "No, Ronin. I love you. Y/N is currently plotting your murder."

You sniffed, still pouting like a kicked puppy. "I hope you fucking stub your toe on every corner you walk past."

Misaki burst out laughing. "OH MY GOD. THEY’RE STILL CURSING HIM OUT."

Ronin, completely unfazed, chuckled. "Mmm. Say that again, sweetheart. But slower."

"I HOPE YOUR KNEE SLAMS INTO EVERY TABLE EDGE IN EXISTENCE, YOU ASS."

Felicite wheezed. "Holy shit."

Luca choked. "Bro—they’re actually unhinged."

V, who had been silent the entire time, finally sighed.

"Are we done?" he asked, in the flattest tone possible.

Brattyxbre - zine making. She teaches how to make zines as well as shows off her own zines. Literally so nice and soothing, I love a lot of her works.

RetroGeek Crafts - toy restoration and customisation. Usually it is MLP toys but sometimes she does different toys like Polly Pocket but it is still amazing.

LeanBeefPatty - workout, she's really funny. My favourite work out of hers so far is probably the 10 min abs one.

Vewn - beautiful and unique animations. You cannot imagine how much I love Vewn. Her animation transports me into another dimension and despite them having dark themes, I find them comforting.

Okana Nanako - life blogger on Japanese. Usually she cooks and does small short sketches. She is obviously on Japanese but has english cc

Morenikejis vlog - Nigerian girl vlogging her life. She describes herself as an introvert and has videos of her going on about her daily life. They are extremely comforting and nice. She puts a lot of love in them.

Real horror - talking about horror and true crime. I have not watched much of her, but I really do recommend her stuff for true crime and mystery lovers ❌️

Rightchoiceshearing - two wives who have a shear company and take videos of their work. Mostly shorts, but they're still enjoyable. I love the stories they share about animals they shear, from llamas to sheep.

Cleancasual - video game icebergs, extremely detailed. I usually dislike icebergs because how some do not provide necessary information regarding information, but she has everything perfectly researched. My favourite so far are her Pokémon icebergs (obviously).

ElectraSoul - law of assumption and manifestation content. Ok this one is not for everyone but I really love her energy <3

Hyler - loa and manifestation again. and again not for everyone, but she has shorter vids compared to electra and I really like her content.

Undefined - tech related content. I think she has revived Frutiger aero from its deep sleep and introduced it to everyone including me. Her videos are also somewhat concentrated on design aspect of technology.

Namiのくらし - Japanese office lady living all alone and vlogging her life. She has a bit of asmr feel to her videos.

Caitlin Koi - Splatoon content, not for everyone but I love Splatoon so I am recommending her for all the ink blob fans here. Or squid I guess. She usually "translates" (interprets inkling gibberish) in official songs and makes music videos. She also streams. I have been watching her since 2019 cause I am a Splatoon freak...

Momo in Amsterdam - Japanese student in Amsterdam vlogging her life. She is very nice and even has videos on english. Usually they are about living in Netherlands and student life, as well as hanging out with friends.

Reignbot - horror and true crime, sometimes internet mysteries. Ok, I actually used to watch her a lot back when she had a regular posting schedule and it was amazing. She refrains from overly edgy stuff and presents topics in an interesting manner.

ASMR PPOMO - asmr channel. Ok not everyone's cup of tea, but she is amazing I think. I used to watch her and sort of dropped after a while, but she did help me deal with some stuff I had going on lol

Hwaufranc - asmr mostly related to journaling. I personally love journaling and her channel was a goldmine for such stuff tbh. I LOVED it.

Atrocity Guide - mysteries, horror, cults, crime you name it, she has it all. She makes extremely detailed videos about the situations and has nice narration style.

MOONLIT † Страшные истории † - this is for all of you who know Russian. Scary story channel where a woman narrates stories. Sometimes she does feature her husband (another horror narrator) during stories as a character, but it is not that often. Stories are usually Russian creepypastas or VK stories or those from Mrakopedia.

hopeful asmr - only recently found her, but she has asmr videos where she either does your makeup or has random language word triggers.

valoulette - another asmr channel (sorry), makes a lot of weird/creepy girl RP videos.

Gamer Grandma - self-explanatory, a Japanese 93-year-old grandma playing video games. She recently played Resident Evil Village! Recommended by a friend.

tibees - math youtuber, also discovered very recently. So far she has an entertaining content related to mathematics, recommend if you are a math freak (in a good way lol no offence)

Asinastra - Ukrainian woman who makes art videos. Usually they are on Russian/Ukrainian. I really loved her content when I was younger and found her art cute and endearing<3 her videos are always cozy and nice. Discovered in 2018 while trying to learn how to make stickers. She does have english cc tho!

maleeka, is my guardian angel - another manifestation related YouTuber, has soothing videos with good narration and visuals. Really nice to those who want to start manifesting. I even have posted her here multiple times!

hobbikats - a woman and her oriental short hair cats having fun! I really LOVE this breed and I love her kittens as well<3

Manifest It, Finesse It - another manifestattion channel, who explains things really well, helped me get through some bullshit I had irl, recommend her 100%

Amy Hewett - she is an animator at CalArts, her famous and my fave animation so far (Jan 2024) is Apocalypse YASSS, which I found out several months ago when she just uploaded it. Her style is reminiscent of Vewn but is still CLEARLY distinct

kylie boggly - so far one of my fave lost media and internet mystery YouTuber. While her schedule is not really consistent, it's usually quality over quantity.

lostpalette - another journaling YouTuber. She has a bunch of cute journaling videos, they are extremely aesthetically pleasing and her videos have asmr quality to them.

iCharly - self-improvement (hypocritical cause I complained about them... but she's different), fashion and vlogging. Has funny skits in her videos, recently discovered and recommended by a friend

Kitten Lady - Recently discovered, she posts videos about taking care of kittens and rescuing them, she has her own foster home for cats and helps them find their forever home. Sometimes she features different animals.

Tamara Michael - art youtuber, who mainly does doodles and watercolour. Some of her videos teach doodling and painting techniques for dealing with anxiety and stress, really lovely and cozy. Recommended by @emofthewired

wAmy - want some good advice on studying? She got you. Bunch of amazing productivity hacks on how to study effectively. Despite this she is honest about the studying methods and other related things. Recommended by @emofthewired

Leslie Stroz - watercolour youtuber, who specifically does small canvas paintings. She actually has been uploading for a rather long time (14 years as of time of writing!) and has even videos of her singing, travelling and tips of painting.

fayefilms - another productivity youtuber concentrated on helping students. It goes from getting better grades, effective note making and avoiding burnout. Recommended by @emofthewired

Tiff In Tech - recently discovered tech youtuber, makes videos about learning skills in tech, AI, jobs in tech and more. I haven't seen much of her. Recommended by a friend.

Estefannie - she makes things and machines! She also has some old videos on math, not that active, but it is pretty entertaining to watch her. Recently discovered.

Strawberry Nightmare - horror stories animated. I have been watching her for a long time and LOVED a lot of them. Some used to scare the shit out of them but hey, just says how good her narration and animation is!

Sapphire Sandalo - She used to be a narrator on SNARLED and now has her own animated horror story channel. She tells both the Filipino myths and myths/horror stories from all over the world.

Useless Farm - she is ANYTHING but useless. She has a farm where she has ostriches. "basically a woman making silly videos of her rescue farm animals who all have human names and an ostrich that tries to kill her anytime shes near her lmaoo" as said and recommended by @jaehyurb

小芊枫 XiaoQianFeng - channel dedicated to making beautiful things. From cyberpunk katana and traditional chinese bow down to the entire house. For those of us who love seeing women build and create stuff.

little tiny egg - art and sketchbook tours, as well as art studio vlogs. She is an illustrator who is inspired by naturalist guides so her artwork features a lot of the similar elements. Usually uses gouache and other traditional painting toold. She also had a website under the same name.

Kanae Nozawa - extremely talented erhu player. Covers music from video games and anime as well as makes her own original compositions! She also has concert and gig videos on her channel. My favourite cover of hers is Zelda TotK cover and her original melody Little Happiness!

Simone Giertz - a mechanical engineer who builds random stuff. She even spent 3 years designing a compact coat hanger for her house and before she used to make extremely short videos showcasing her machines! Recommended by @acidbathcat

Dr. Becky - An astrophysicist with tons of videos about space. As a sort of space nerd myself, I really appreciated this recommendation by @acidbathcat

Up and Atom - coincidentally once @acidbathcat recommended her to me, I get her in my YouTube feed! So basically she makes videos explaining things regarding physics, mathematics, astronomy and paradoxes. This one is for all the other science nerds.

Angela Collier - woman explaining physics and sometimes talking about her experience in the field. So far, my fav video has to be her talking about Pokémon and physics of their evolution. Again, recommended by @acidbathcat

tarantula kat - her channel is about tarantulas and taking care of them. If there are any tarantula enthusiasts or owners here, thank @acidbathcat as it was recommended by her.

SoupySoup - want some horror in your life? Well, Soupy does exactly this by making videos about random internet horror, as well as real one. She even has tumblr @/soupysoupx, so check it out if you want.

D i n L i f e - I don't even know how I forgot her! She makes adorable crafts from cotton dolls down to notebooks. Her channel is sort of about zero waste and making things out of what you have to prevent any waste. She has nice atmosphere and sometimes does vlogs.

Bear Soongnyoong - ASMRtist from Korea who features her cats in the videos. Uploads are not as frequent as before due to her having to undergo a surgery. Still, extremely adorable and nice atmosphere especially in that video where she treats her cat actress for a spa lol

HannahTheHorrible - horror Youtuber talking about unsolved mysteries, internet criminals and horror as well as makes icebergs relating to the subject. Sometimes she explores scary side of tiktok.

It's Time to Travel/ 旅する時間 - woman travelling around Japan, she has no narration in most videos but has English subtitles! She even made videos inside Japan's women only hotels!

EATRIP* Pyon Chan - another Japanese woman travelling, but this time she does so around the world too! She has narration but also subtitles on her videos and a wonderful atmosphere. Recently (Apr. 2024) she even visited Iceland and England!

5minBS -五分钟嗑研馆 - Chinese woman making short videos of moments from lesbian, femslash and GL movies from all over the world and different time periods (1950s to now!). Usually has subtitles on both Chinese and English.

Rumbo Mercy - South African artist talking all about being an artist, giving out tips to other artists, vlogging and maybe some reviews of different media.

Movie Monarch - she does short movie reviews. Sadly, she hasn't been posting in a while. Found her through Song of the Sea review she did.

Tokyo Simple Eco Life - Japanese woman talking about minimalism, decluttering and sustainable life. If you are interested in such, her channel is perfect for this. Her videos have subtitles on English and Japanese. Recommended by a friend. ❌️

The Internet Investigator - horror, mystery, internet mysteries and disturbing stories. All on her channel. I usually watch her videos on internet weirdness and tragedies.

Sinister - She has horror stories on her channel. Fully on Russian and I do not think she has any subtitles. I used to watch her before.

Tamakid - Her name is Evelyn and she has a bunch of cute videos relating to fashion, hauls and other random things. I really love the retro aesthetic she goes for!

Lydia Loves Timelines - videos about Family Guy, South Park, American Dad and other animated shows.

Gutsick Gibbon - specialises in human evolution and debunking creationism.

GEO GIRL - geoscience, extinct animals and history of the earth. She makes videos about tons of other subjects too like geobiology and even touches upon environmental themes.

Indie Animations I Recommend

Haven’t posted in a while since, as I have said, my Apple Pencil broke and I haven’t been able to work on commissions or that one hazbin hotel animation… which I was actually getting through for once. Also I have fallen into a Varian And The Seven Kingdoms obsession.

Anyhow I shall now take the chance to share a couple indie animations I’ve watched/been watching recently possibly with a brief note about what kind of audience would enjoy it (might not be accurate I dunno)

First and foremost The Epilogue Of Endings which released approximately 12 hours ago as of when I’m writing this. And just before I summarise anything I just want to praise this pilot for HOW AMAZING IT IS DESPITE ITS SMALL BUDGET! The animation is fantastic and I swear something about it makes me so happy. The art style is also amazing (in my opinion) and suits the character designs perfectly. I love the character designs, just saying, and the voice acting is superb. I think my favourite designs from it are Blu (because I mean the mask and metal arms are pretty damn cool) and the ————. I won’t say who they are because the reveal is too good to miss, but you might be able to guess who I’m talking about if you’ve watched it.

Now to say what happens. This takes place after the sun ya know, goes. I think I’m probably the most interested by what exactly is going on with Mole but I think my favourite character thus far is Blu. I suggest you go watch it, it’s very cool. I think if you like Indie animation in general then this is a good pic due to its indie feel (positive). Also would suggest to people who enjoy slightly creepy media (it’s not that creepy in my opinion but it does feature the downfall of humanity and what happens after the sun dies so it’s slightly unsettling, it masters that feeling).

We also have Dreamworld which also has a season 2, I’m just linking the first one though so just so you know you can find the second season on the channel. As said by the creator, it borrows certain tropes/aspects from analogue horror and has animatronics. As it says up there it is a sci-fi horror series that is intended to be accessible to younger fans of the genre. Again, I love the story and the character designs. So far, my favourite character and character design belongs to THE Star Light. I’m starting to see a theme with me liking sun/moon/star themed animatronics. I mean this guy has a BOW TIE and a charming smile. If I wasn’t already dressing up as Varian for Halloween then I think I would’ve looked into trying to dress as Star Light.

The pilot hasn’t released but the animation from this teaser is SO GOOD! I’m excited to see the pilot. There’s also been music/songs released by them, I can’t remember if I’ve gotten around to listening to any but I fully intend on doing so.

I’m sorry but how is the animation this good with only one person animating it (I might��ve gotten that wrong). I find the character designs really cool and the art style is fun. They’re in space. The voice acting is good. Also just gonna say, they have merch.

This is Dungeon Flippers, a fantasy real-estate cartoon following Maulie, a manticore. (I copied and shortened down the description of the YouTube channel)

The animation is great and the voice acting is really good. The story is interesting and The Ace Of Wands Theme is a joy to listen to every time.

I don’t know how to describe the plot but lemme just… the animation deserves praise, it suits the vibe of the pilot and the character designs are amazing. Voice acting is also fun and I’d recommend this even if it’s just sea side/coast vibes you’re looking for.

This one is a YouTube channel that posts OC animatics and has posted Sundrop and Moondrop animations, just saying I think they drew the Sun and Moon Q&A comics soooo that was my introduction to their work.

Just watch this and you will see some PEAK animation.

I myself am looking forward to making my own indie animated stuff or comics (I haven’t really decided, I’m just working on different characters whilst also writing fanfics and drawing fan comics and other art stuff on top of art homework. YAY

It’s for an OC, but with their old design. The new design has a satchel, otherwise nothing changed to be honest. I also have done another animation which was far more rough but it was me animating whilst seeing who would win the election so it’s political and not about any of my ocs or any actual characters. As I said, I already have another animation in the works for Alastor so I have to wait till my Apple Pencil gets fixed or replaced to continue working on it.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Honestly, 3 are neck & necking for top position! They are all so good in different ways. But The Sign had me hooting with laughter this week, so it scooped #1.

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 4 of 10 - This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, paranormal, fated mates, mystery, suspense, slasher, and horror. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. I have no idea what I’m watching but I’m ON this ride. Is it a roller coaster? Is it a haunted house? Is it a twirl & hurl? Is there candy floss? Am I even tall enough? Who tf cares. All through the second scene, I was laughing. It was legit funny. Billy has great comedic timing. Guess he’s not just a pretty face.

Everyone should be watching this. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 6 of 12 -  Yech. August may be one of GMMTV’s least likable characters ever (and that is saying something). Meanwhile, MOAR language play! They spoiling me!

Ep 6 so that kiss was right on schedule. I’m looking forward to the boyfriend eps before doom & pain in the new year. Carry on GMMTV. 

Speaking of...

Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube) ep 2 of 12 - Oh they’re great. It’s great. It’s paced oddly, moving quickly through most of the key scenes of the original JBL in these first 2 eps. I think it’s intending to encompass more of the manga series than that one did. Which is good, cause that will get us all the way to The Library Kiss (TM). It's the best kiss in the manga. I also like the sides in this show (better than the JBL version). 

My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8fin - What a lovely slightly unhinged little show. Tew, can we talk? Un-ironic suspenders, that takes courage. Also, the revolver was a crazy gun choice. 

Final thoughts:

This show is just as ridiculous as its title. About a gaymer who falls in love with one of his in-game teammates, who just happens to be a IRL gangster. A real gangster, the kind that actually kills people regularly. The lead pair is doing their best with a ridiculous story and shoddy script, but I enjoyed it. Although I was grateful it wasn’t very long, what we got was oddly satisfying if, frankly, a little bit silly. Recommended. 8/10 

That said, what's important about this BL is not the show, but the production and style. Let me explain... no, too much, let me sum up.

This is a chimera BL. Regarding characters: it has Japan's style otaku + Korea's style gangster + Thailand's style friendship group. It used Thai talent + Korean money (Kakao) & IP (adapted from a manwha) but aired on a Chinese channel globally (iQIYI). I'm delighted by the eclectic insanity of this production and truly doubt that any other genre but BL could ever produce like this. It's like diplomat's BL and it's the great wonder of our age that it happened at all. This BL deserves its place in the history books on production alone, even if that place is only in the footnotes. A remarkable little monster.

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - The sides are… messy. Using the same actor for the old bf is… odd. But in the end, this show leaves me smiling. Which means, I like it despite myself. 

Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - It's decent. It’s basically what I wanted Antique Bakery to be when I first watched that way back when (not to mention Bite Me). But there’s been so much BL since then that, for some reason, this is falling flat. I think it’s moving too fast for a Thai series. Although, say what you like, Ohm has to be one of the best soft kissers in the industry. He's just good at mouth tenderness.

Ugh, that doesn't sound right. But you know what I mean.

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 7 of 10 - I love how First is so upset when Sprite starts chatting and being nice to Koh. Sprite is just a sweet easy-going likable boy. I enjoy Sprite as a main character, he’s a bubbly little communicator. And they had a cute kiss.  

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 5 of 14 - Because there was more Alan and Jeff and they were more key to the plot I was more into this ep. I do compare it to green smoothie down the pants in the Trash Watch.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 3 of 12 - Look OffGun are truly great. But I’m just not sure we need them in BL anymore. That said, it’s nice to see Off as "the one with the crush" for a change. Also, this show is only good when OffGun are on screen together, otherwise it kinda, well, sucks.

Night Dream (Sat YT) ep 1 of 6 - Cafe setting featuring a cook and a writer. *Seems awfully familiar.* Except these two are exes and this is a reunion romance. It’s stiff and very pulp but not bad (no crap sound effects) and I am a sucker for a reunion romance. That said, Rookie Thailand is not to be trusted, proceed with caution.

Absolute Zero (Weds iQIYI) ep 12fin - I'm grateful this is over. It was tense but for the wrong reasons - sadness and confusion. This final episode was fine, but that’s because it was mostly them being together + flashbacks. Plus all the familiar actor faces of the grown-up friends (hi, Karn my lovely, still stunning I see). But 2 of 12 episodes is not enough for the 10 of suffering and confusion that came before.

In conclusion:

A man is killed on his 10th anniversary resulting in a time paradox, for which the only solution is him never meeting his childhood sweetheart until later in life. Both lovers cycle back to the past at different ages, so that they each become their own 1st & 2nd great loves, but every time it ends in pain, until each also endures 10 years of separation. Finally it gets fixed, but leaves them with multiple memories of time's failures like temporal PTSD, and everyone around them has chronic deja vu. Me? I got both. This is one of those BLs that is high-quality with great acting but poor story. If you like your BL dwelling, maudlin, and tense due to angst and suffering, then you might enjoy this. But I just regret it, 6/10. Recommended only if you like confusing time travel emo pain.

In which case, just watch Tokyo in April is... instead. Give over Thailand, Japan does it better.

Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 6 of 8 - While our main couple isn’t working for me... the side couple isn’t working for me either. I really wanted to give LeoTai a chance, this is the 3rd show I’ve seen them in, and still nope. I like Jade a lot more when he’s sad. He’s a much more pleasant screen experience depressed. I would like him to stay hurt for a couple of eps, just so I can enjoy this show a tiny bit more. But then he just goes unhinged again. Argh. I just don’t like it. 

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Pisces of Me ep 17 of 24 - Codependent boyfriends in middle school planning for high school dealing with stuff. Including other boys being into them. 

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 5 of 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. DNF

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 3 of 8 - This is one of those JBLs that I should like on paper but is failing me. The drag bit was ridiculous but handled gently. The kiss was… well… something wasn’t it? It’s all very odd. I like the photographer cutie character.

I know I'm SO late to the party, but In light of the hbomberguy video, I wanted to drop a list of some of my favorite video essayists on here who are all great. Some are well known, some of them not, but all deserve a lot of love thrown their way!

Any creators I know are Queer will have a * next to their names if that's what you're looking for! (Note some of them might not have a star that should, that's not me trying to invalidate anybody I just didn't know, please feel free to correct me!)

Dominic Noble- book content! Has a series called Lost in Adaptation that judges how faithful movie adaptations of books were to their original source material, but also does some reviews/summaries as well. Very publicly denounced JKR after she was revealed to be a TERF and stated he will no longer review anything by her on his channel. Also deleted ALL of his HP videos after finding out she was a TERF (which were his most popular videos), so I have a really deep respect for him tbh. Former Channel Awesome member who publicly denounced them on several occasions, and an all around swell guy.

*Overly Sarcastic Productions- channel run by 2 people who go by Red and Blue. History and Mythology/Literature content, as well as analysis of tropes and media! I've been told their History content can be a bit... Iffy, but I'm not a Historian so I don't know, however if they get something wrong they're good about correcting it for what that counts for. Very interesting to listen to, I've watched Red's Videos roughly 100 times each. Also has a podcast.

*Strange Aeons- fandom/Tumblr history mostly, as well as some history, and weird businesses too. Reads a LOT of cursed content for her channel.

*Lindsay Ellis- Media/film analysis. obviously not as unknown as some of the others on here, but I absolutely adore her content and will forever be sad that she isn't on YouTube anymore.

Cruel World Happy Mind- MLM/explanation of controversial figures. I'm not sure how best to explain her content, but she seems genuinely lovely and is interesting to listen to. Also a victim of Illuminaughtii's ire and deserves some love. The video she made on Blair is a bit outdated since she made it at the start of when this all came to light, but imo it's definitely worth a watch. Her talking about her interaction with Blair genuinely broke my heart.

*Night Mind- Analog horror/Unfiction/ARG content! Analyzes and explains various internet horror pieces, and also has a very nice voice to listen to.

*Lola Sebastian- Film/Media Analysis!

Li Speaks- Deep dives into various nostalgia, mainly flash games!

Disney Dan- Disney content! Covers the history of different mascot costumes at Disney and Disney-like parks! Has collaborated with Definctland in the past too!

Yesterworld- theme park content! Discusses history behind rides and parks, as well as some Disney movies. I think has also collaborated with Defunctland and Disney Dan?

Legal Eagle- legal content! Breaks down news about ongoing legal cases in a way that feels approachable. I like him because both my parents are paralegals and his videos have helped me understand what they mean when they're talking about work a little bit

Super Eye patch Wolf- media video essays! Mostly about anime/manga and video games, but also covers things like influencer scams and pro wrestling. His "what the internet did to Garfield" video is SO GOOD

*Jessie Gender- Media Analysis, loves Star Trek

*Laura Crone- Media Analysis video essays, her videos on the Swan Princess are fucking great I highly recommend!

*Lady Emily- Media Analysis, did a whole video on Spuder-Man turn off the dark that is SO good. Co writer for Sarah Z

Tale Foundry- covers different forms of fiction, their xenofiction video is great, as is their Angelarium one!

Defunctland- Theme Park ride and Children's TV History channel!

Jenny Nicholson- one of the sort of "big three" commentary channels with Lindsay Ellis and Sarah Z imo, covers all sorts of stuff but her most recent one is a 3 hour video on the theme park Evermore Park!

*Sarah Z- Fandom history and Media analysis! I really enjoy their content, the Johnlock Conspiracy and DashCon videos are my favorites!

Li Speaks- Flash games/virtual world analysis mostly! She has a very soothing voice to listen to, if you played like. Any MMOs or virtual worlds growing up I Highly recommend. I've watched her video on Horseland SO many times.

*Codex Entry- Video game coverage! Her videos on Pathologic are great if you're like me and wanted more after the Hbomberguy video!

Wendigoon- ARG/Spooky content! One of the early proponents of the Mandela Catalog and best known for his conspiracy theory iceberg, but has also covered things like various weird/unsolved crimes, Assassination conspiracies, and other things. His videos on Faith, Blood Meridian, The Mandela Catalog, and his Religion/Cult iceberg are some of my favorites

Dino Diego- Dinosaur fiction, like movies, video games, books, short stories, etc. his 2 videos on West of Eden and Winter in Eden are two of my favorites!

Haley Whipjack- I don't know how to describe her content really? She does a lot of deep dives (her Shrek one is my favorite), currently doing a recap of Once Upon a Time by season that is very fun. She's an elementary school teacher by day (that's not me dozing her she talks about it on her channel), and so she has fun unhinged teacher energy!

Alternatives to Dungeons & Dragons (2024) now that they are going all-in on gacha:

Dungeons & Dragons 5e (previous) + any number of compatible indie produced modules (Obvious Mimic Press is the one I've played)

Pathfinder 2e (basically the same game, tons of adventure available)

DC20 (if you like rules improvements; not a lot of modules available yet)

Shadowdark (if you want to party like it's 1979)

Obviously Daggerheart if you're a Critical Role fan; the setting is familiar and rules easy and you can play a mushroom (or their version of tiefling, dragonborn, etc)

Literally any older version of Dungeons & Dragons that still has playable adventures out there.

Have you REALLY played all the existing DnD campaigns and modules yet? Until you have, you don't need to buy new ones.

Roll20.net has automatic DnD character sheets so you can cancel that DnDBeyond subscription if you use it just for that. It has also recently bought up Demiplane, another similar platform, which is prettier and has many of the games mentioned here.

If you want to get more adventurous with rules and setting but still like fantasy combat and skill lists, there's Runequest (bronze age fantasy for you ancient Mesopotamia nerds), which I have been reading recently.

Other genres:

Pathfinder is working on an update on Starfinder, so you can play DnD-like rules for a space adventure.

Teatime Adventures is aD20 rules game for a cozy rural furry stories about pies and being kind to each other.

Call of Cthulhu for horror (check out Chaosium Inc's Youtube channel for actual plays, love those guys) and Pulp Cthulhu for extra cheese on top; there's even Regency Cthulhu if you want to try balancing a monster hunt with a husband hunt.

This is a deep cut but A Ghastly Affair is a game set in the long 1700s and the character classes are stereotypes of gothic romance fiction, and I know I have followers who are into that shit, available on DriveThruRPG (I can't find their original website anymore so get it while you can).

I have to mention Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades, a wuxia roleplaying game from Osprey Publishing, considering @minutia-r and I have written 480K of adventuring for it.

Also I must mention Vampire: The Masquerade, which is the game that got me to take on gamemastering for the first time. The Storyteller System they use is still my favourite TTRPG system. Very gritty modern supernatural setting, and the Core Rulebook even has a caveat saying "yeah there's problematic stuff, because problematic stuff is part of the real world, fuck the Nazis though" (paraphrased). Caveat, the Core Rulebook is kind of unintuitive.

All of the above are games that have rules with skill lists and kind of the same logical approach to playing as DnD (broadly speaking).

I would not go directly from DnD to Powered by the Apocalypse games like Candela Obscura, Girl by Moonlight, or Blades in the Dark, because their logic is very different and they are less about rules and more about genre; or rather, the rules define things that the above games leave to role-playing, and very little for anything else.

For example, in Candela Obscura you would do the same roll for punching a person and breaking through a door, and in Girl by Moonlight you have to roll to confess your true feelings. Girl by Moonlight is absolutely perfect for playing a magical girl TV show though. That's what it's for.

Rvb bbc ghosts x buzzfeed unsolved au Leonard “Alpha” Church III and his older sister Carolina Church inherit a creepy manor in the middle of nowhere halfway across the country after their great grandfather Leonard “Epsilon” Church dies of old age (yes Epsilon being their great grandfather is odd, it's for lore reasons).

Church’s college roommate Tucker has a ghost hunting youtube channel (Church edits his videos for him) and decides the manor seems spooky so he tags along to check it out with his co host (Kai) and camera/audio guy (Caboose) as well as Junior. Tex (Churches on again off again gf) comes along to bully them for getting scared, whenever she ends up on the show their views go up so they don’t complain. Carolina doesn’t wanna be stuck alone with Church’s friends so she invites her workout buddy Wash.

Unbeknownst to them, Tuckers “rival” youtube channel (the reds, Simmons is video and editing, Grif is audio, Lopez is in charge of their other equipment) catch wind of their plan to investigate the manor (Kai told Grif who accidentally let slip to Sarge) and they (literally just Sarge) take it as a challenge and they decide (are forced by Sarge) to follow the others to the manor to do their own investigation (Donut flirts with Locus the gas station attendant. This is important to me for some reason). Doc is unofficially part of the red team crew as first aid aka he follows them around bc he's worried about them going to all these abandoned buildings with no medical knowledge

Cw: talk of deaths in some detail, especially fires.

The Manor is actually haunted, by fifteen different ghosts:

Wyoming: 1840’s, fell out a window onto a weathervane

Florida: 1960’s, aspirin overdose 

York: 1980’s, car crash, has poltergeist abilities

North: 1850s, arsenic poisoning

South: 1850s, arsenic poisoning

Maine: 1910s, hunting accident, can sometimes be seen as a looming shadow in the dark

Ct: 1940s, military spy, shot

479er: 1960s, pilot, small aircraft crash

AI: 1920s, Children of a rich man who burned his house down while his wife was away with their youngest son, Leonard “Epsilon” Church (age 2 at the time). Delta (17), Theta (7), Eta (11), and Iota(11) died from smoke inhalation,  Gamma (15) and Omega (14) were burned,  Sigma (18) escaped the fire but succumbed to infection while still on the manor grounds. All of the ai ghosts carry a smell of smoke wherever they go (I have a drawing of them somewhere)

The only ones who can see the ghosts without outside influence (cameras, sensors, that stuff) are Church, Carolina, Wash, Donut, and Caboose, due to all five of them having near death experiences in their pasts, and later Doc after he’s possessed by Omega. Junior is also able to see ghosts though no one is sure why. 

Most of the au’s “story” is just silly interactions with the ghosts pranking the youtubers and various shenanigans. Wash deadpan pretends there are no ghosts to annoy both York and Tucker. Junior befriends Theta, Eta, and Iota, which concerns Tucker to no end especially since he tends to act like a horror movie child, all “Daddy, the lady with the hole in her head is in the corner again, daddy my friends with no faces wanna go play outside”. Sarge has a holy water super soaker that he carries everywhere incase of “ghouls”. South takes great joy in tormenting Simmons specifically. York follows the youtubers around and throws things at them, he only uses his poltergeist abilities for mischief. Ct finds a secret joy in sneaking up on Church to make him jump. Donut keeps telling his friends that the ghosts are there and real but none of them really believe him despite York pelting them with random objects. Wash finds a stray kitten and the ghosts are all immediately infatuated and begin following it around. Florida and Donut gossip together. Doc has to figure out how to deal with a rage fueled fourteen year old taking over his body. Tex punches Tucker on camera and it becomes their most popular video to date. Their second most popular video includes Tucker being attacked by Sarge with his holy water super soaker.

some of my favorite YouTubers! Some of these are coquette but some of them are not, so I’m still going to tag the coquette tag but it won’t apply for all of these

CZsworld, a horror themed channel that focuses on the intricate histories, theories, characters and stories of many horror movies, books, and sometimes tv shows. He also talks about people/figures from real life in more parody-esque horror history videos. He’s extremely cool and an amazing channel to watch to get into the Halloween mood during October, but watching him at any other time is enjoyable as well

glamourdaze, a collection of different videos from the 20th century, such as beauty and healthcare videos, or just videos of people from different decades in this century living out their lives. What makes this channel one of my favs is that they revive the clips of people from decades such as the 1920s to color them and slow them down (to make it look less choppy and more realistic in how the people move) and it really gives a whole new different perspective on these eras and makes us realize that this wasn’t too long ago.

Erin Parsons Makeup, a very talented makeup artist and vintage collector who’s really cool and someone I love seeing talking about makeup and fashion from history. She’s very similar to glamourdaze except she mainly focuses on vintage/antique fashion and recreates retro looking styles in her looks and it’s just really neat :>

Schafrillas Productions… yeah he’s just very neat and I like watching his movie/tv show reviews. Though his content where he’s passionate and excited about a piece of media is enjoyable, watching him rip apart something he genuinely despises with an infinite amount of rage is funny as all hell

Micarah Tewers, a very talented, artistic, and funny seamstress who makes different types of dresses and outfits in her videos. I love how much dedication and detail she puts into her work to make it stand out and look amazing whenever she wears it, and I also really enjoyed her prom dress videos. She’s also really funny and I love all the extra hijinks she shows herself getting into in between making her project and the video itself lol

Colin LooksBack, a Disney based channel that focuses on the characters and movies/other media from Disney, as well as the behind the scenes details of how classic Disney films were made, especially the animated movies made during Walt Disney’s life/career

Karolina Żebrowska, a history fashion themed channel that you probably have heard of. She makes a lot of historical videos as fashion videos and she’s just very talented and intelligent and you should check her out.

Finally, Lavendertowne, the channel I have the fondest YouTube memories of as she was the one who inspired me to start art. I used to love her creepydrawstas and her videos where she drew different stuff as people, as well as her art tutorials. I wouldn’t have gotten to my point in my art journey if it weren’t for her, and overall she’s very cool and sweet.

It was the first day of your offline collab with Nijisanji EN's Psychic from Noctyx, Uki Violeta and Sorcerer from Luxiem, Shu Yamino. The three of you decided to take a trip to London to see the sights and make a collab out of it, previously before the trip, You had been talking to Vox about a good place to go on a trip and maybe an offcollab. He said giving London a shot would be fun and named off a bunch of fun activites to do while there.

After taking some time to plan out a trip, you reached out to Uki and Shu, two people you had wanted to do an offcollab with since joining the company. Asking them to join you on your trip was fairly easy, both agreed very quickly. You had just joined Nijisanji weeks before Mysta Rias, a member of Luxiem graduated. In the short time you have been apart of the company, you had become fairly close with Mysta, Shu and Uki. It saddened you deeply seeing Mysta leave seeing as how close you had gotten with him in such a short period of time.

~ 2 days before the offline collab W/Uki and Shu ~

You sat at your desk, staring at the discord waiting to see if anyone would come online, it was fairly late for you but you couldn't sleep. You decided to check YouTube and see if anyone was streaming, hoping there would be a chance to join them for company. Checking Uki's channel, seeing he was livestreaming a horror game, you hummed and jumped into his chat;

Chat; Y/VTuberName (NIJISANJI EN): Hey Uki, do you mind if I jump in VC with you? I can't sleep and the silence is driving me insane- ASwiftyFan23: Omg, HI Y/VTubername! A_Local_UkiFan: UKI MAMA, Y/VTubername's here! They can't sleep! A.Y/VTubername.fan: Awh poor thing, Uki let them join and keep each other company!

Uki hummed and he looked over at his chat seeing people saying hello to you,

" Oh! Y/VTubername's here? What did they say? " He spoke in his usually gentle voice, scrolling up to check what you said, seeing the message, he paused the game he had been playing and quickly went into the discord DMs he had with you,

" Yeah, you can join me. Let me just call you real quick. " he said before the sound of a call ringing could be heard followed by your small voice greeting Uki and the Stargazers while Uki unpaused his game and continued on with stream while occasionally chatting with you.

" So you can't sleep huh? Something bothering you? " Uki asked softly while playing through the game.

" Oh.. well I don't really think I'm allowed to talk about it on stream actually. " You said with a sigh while resting your chin on your hand, eyes glued to your computer monitor watching the game he had streamed to you so you could watch.

Hearing Uki hum before he paused and took a second to type something to someone in discord. You waited a moment before speaking again, saying you got the okay to speak freely, you knew that he knew it was about Mysta.

" It's about Mysta... "

" I figured it was, so now you have the okay to speak freely from Staff san. Because we both can see something is bothering you quite a bit. " Uki said once again unpausing his game and continuing on, even still, his attention mostly on what you were going to say,

" It's just... I had wanted to collab and spend so much more time with Mysta and I even asked Staff San to help me plan an offcollab with him. But then... " your voice trailed off and you fought back the tears you felt forming in your eyes.

Even before joining Nijisanji yourself, you had spent a lot of time watching the livers, Mysta specifically along with Uki and Shu hence why it didn't take much time for you to click with the three of them when you did join.

" I know girl, I honestly wish that you had joined a little sooner so you could have been apart of the collabs with Mysta and I'm sure he would have loved to do an offline collab with you, it's just the timing of everything was off ya know? " Uki saids, empathy lacing his tone, he could hear the sadness so clearly in your voice as you spoke.

" I know... it just sucks.. But I am happy I get to do this offcollab with you and Shu. I guess I have something to look forward to that will take my mind off things.. " You said quietly.

You suddenly heard Uki chuckle before speaking again,

" My chat just flooded in with people saying, ' Noooo ', ' Don't cry babyyyyy ', ' Poor thing just wanted to spend time with Mysta. ' and ' Such a sweetheart! Y/VTubername is such a wholesome baby! '. Even the Stargazers can hear how sad you are. " he said gently, you could hear the smile on his face as he read the chats out to you.

Hearing the chats coming in on Uki's stream, it made you crack a tiny smile. Despite the tears now rolling down your cheeks, you sniffled and wiped them away and kept conversing with Uki. The stream went on, you both laughed, joked and screamed at jumpscares together and had fun, you could never put your finger on it but something about Uki always seemed to comfort you. He was like the big brother you never had.

~ The day of the offline collab W/Uki and Shu ~

You had met Nijipurple members at the airport, you had made sure all your seats were together, Shu had the isle seat, Uki in the middle and you next to the window. You were super excited to go on this trip and spend time with your Oshi's. The plane ride went smoothly, you and the duo spent most the time quietly chatting about what to do the second day of the trip and spend the final few hours of the flight taking well deserved naps.

Upon arrival, you had made sure the vehicle you rented for the trip was there and ready to go. Hopping into the driver's seat, Uki in the passenger and Shu in the back, you punched the address to the AirBNB in the GPS and made your way there. Getting to the AirBNB proved easy. Once getting there, everyone got out and piled into the lovely home and got situated in their respective rooms.

You met the two in the living area and sat down on the couch,

" It's a little late for a stream so why don't we put on a movie and enjoy some drinks before we go to bed? " Uki suggested while going to a shelf of movies the trio was permitted to use while they stayed. Shu nodded in agreement as did you. All three of you were fairly jet lagged but not tired enough to go to bed right away.

Uki picked out a movie while Shu had gone to grab some drinks and popcorn. You sat on the couch with the remote ready to turn on the movie when everyone was ready. Once you were all settled in, Shu on your left and Uki on the right, you started the movie.

~ The Next Day ~

The following day rolled around, you were the first one up, in the kitchen preparing some breakfast and coffee for the two boys for whenever they had gotten up.

After Uki and Shu had gone to bed, you had been woken up by a discord message, checking it, you see it was from Mysta.

Discord messages; MyStAbEaSt; Hey Y/N, how have you been? Y/VTubername; Could be better.. but surviving. what's up? MyStAbEaSt; I had something I wanted to tell you before I left Niji but never got the chance to, I was hoping I could get the chance to tell you now? Y/VTubername; I guess so.. What is it MyStAbEaSt; Listen Y/N, I just wanted you to know what I am really happy I got to meet you before I left NijiEN. And I wanted to tell you that, in the short time we've known each other, I've developed some strong feelings for you... I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, I didn't know how. Y/VTubername; I... it's late Mysta, I should be getting to bed. I'll talk to you another time yeah? Y/VTubername has gone offline -

You turned off your phone and rolled over turning away from it, hugging the pillow next to you tight while squeezing your eyes shut, tears slipping through and wetting the pillow under you. You too had developed feelings for the detective but for him to only tell you weeks after he left Nijisanji, did something you didn't like to your heart. You hadn't even seen him in person yet, you didn't know how to respond to this..

You stood at the stove making eggs, bacon and toast for Uki and some vanilla flavored coffee along with eggs, bacon and regular coffee for Shu. You had been trying to get the conversation from that night out of your mind so you could relax and have fun with the two men while on your trip. It wasn't long before two drowsy voices spoke out behind you,

" Mmmm.. complimentary breakfast huh... It smells good. "

" I didn't take your for the early bird type.. "

You turned around with the two plates of food in your hands while the two sat down at the table, Uki yawning and rubbing his eyes like a tired child and Shu stretching and yawning like cat would after a good nap. Smiling, you chuckled and explained you weren't normally a morning person, you were just excited to spend time with them and get the day started. Uki looked at you, he could tell something else was up but decided against saying anything. You gave them their coffees and sat down with your own food and a cup of tea (or whatever beverage you enjoy in the mornings).

Once you were all awake enough and dressed, you all went out and decided to look at a few shops first. You walked in between Uki and Shu, eyes shining at how beautiful the shops were. Uki and Shu had stopped to look at some nails that caught Uki's eye as you continued looking around the small shop you had gone into. Not paying attention, you collided with someone, sending you to the floor, a voice above you quickly apologizing.. You froze, you knew that voice. You would recognize that voice anywhere...

" Oh shit! I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there. " the voice spoke, you slowly looked up seeing a gloved hand being held out to you. Your eyes trailing above the hand, meeting the blue eyes you knew so well.

Both parties were frozen in place when your eyes met.. His eyes were wide with surprise as were yours but more with shock. Your hand slowly met his and he gently pulled you to your feet not breaking the eye contact you held with him.

" Mysta... " you spoke quietly, not knowing what to do, you didn't notice that you hadn't let go of his hand and he didn't seem to notice either.

" Y/N... " he whispered back, shocked that he had ended up bumping into you by chance, sub consciously, he gave your hand a tight squeeze.

The squeeze sent a comforting and warm feeling up your arm and into your chest. Before either of you could speak or process what was happening, your body moved on it's own accord, arms shooting up tightly wrapping around the detective's neck holding him close to you like a lifeline.

Something in your mind was telling you that if you let go, even for a moment, he'll disappear forever.. You held tight then feeling arms snake tight around your waist with the same strength that you held. Feeling the tears well up into your eyes, you let the hot tears freely fall. Neither party speaking, the silence said a thousand words, by this time, Uki and Shu noticed you had wandered off, they had come looking for you only to find you embracing a familiar figure. Uki couldn't help but smile and tear up seeing how tight you and the former detective were holding each other, Shu simply smiled and he placed a hand on Uki's shoulder to comfort him.

Not letting go, you pulled back to look up at the greyish blond haired male, the gentle smile on his face made your heart speed up. He opened his mouth to speak but you stopped him, crashing your lips against his, giving him a response to his message the previous night.

After that, Mysta spent the day with you, Uki and Shu, even coming back to the AirBNB. You then could say that you had met the man that brought you to Nijisanji, you met the man that captured your heart and you weren't gonna let him go anytime soon, regardless of if he was in Nijisanji or not, it was that voice that finally grounded you.
