What Did the Biden Family’s Foreign Clients Get for their Money?
Hunter Biden pleads guilty to federal tax charges.
Wall Street Journal
By James Freeman
Hunter Biden has been convicted of federal crimes for not paying all the taxes he owed on his foreign income. But the most important question for Americans remains unanswered: What exactly did his overseas clients get in return for their money? His Thursday guilty plea on tax charges prevented testimony that may have gone some way toward providing an answer. This potential testimony may also explain why Hunter Biden waited until now to acknowledge his guilt.
The Journal’s Sara Randazzo, Ryan Barber and Annie Linskey report from Los Angeles:
Federal prosecutors signaled an aggressive strategy as the trial drew near, previewing an approach that would show how foreign interests paid the younger Biden to influence the U.S. government while his father was vice president during the Obama administration. Prosecutors said they planned to cast a light on a lucrative arrangement with a Romanian real-estate magnate who was facing a corruption investigation in his home country, along with his ties to the oil company CEFC China Energy and his tenure on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company.
In court Thursday, [prosecutor Leo Wise] insisted on reading the entirety of the 56-page indictment into the record—over the objection of Biden’s lawyer—to establish the facts underlying the guilty plea.
Alanna Durkin Richer reported last month for the Associated Press:
Hunter Biden’s lawyers say prosecutors are inappropriately trying to insert “politically-charged” allegations about his foreign business dealings into the upcoming federal tax trial against the president’s son.
Special counsel David Weiss’ team told the judge last week that they plan to call to the witness stand a business associate of Hunter Biden’s to testify about an arrangement with a Romanian businessman who was trying to “influence U.S. government policy” during Joe Biden’s term as vice president…
The Romanian businessman, Gabriel Popoviciu, wanted U.S. government agencies to probe a bribery investigation he was facing in his home country in the hopes that would end his legal trouble, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors say Hunter Biden agreed with his business associate to help Popoviciu fight the criminal charges against him. But prosecutors say they were concerned that “lobbying work might cause political ramifications” for Joe Biden, so the arrangement was structured in a way that “concealed the true nature of the work” for Popoviciu, prosecutors alleged…
In fact, Popoviciu and Hunter’s business associate agreed that they would be paid for their work to “attempt to influence U.S. government agencies to investigate the Romanian investigation,” prosecutors said. Hunter Biden’s business associate was paid more than $3 million, which was split with Hunter and another business partner, prosecutors say.
Ms. Richer also noted that Hunter Biden’s defense lawyers “slammed prosecutors for showcasing ‘these matters on the eve of Mr. Biden’s trial—when there is no mention of political influence in the 56-page Indictment.’ ” The A.P. story continued:
“The Special Counsel’s unnecessary change of tactic merely echoes the baseless and false allegations of foreign wrongdoing which have been touted by House Republicans to use Mr. Biden’s proper business activities in Romania and elsewhere to attack him and his father,” the defense wrote.
But the defense has now opted not to defend.
Of course Romania is not the only foreign jurisdiction that proved fruitful for the Biden family business. The majority staff of several House committees recently reported:
From 2014 to the present… Biden family members and their associates received over $27 million from foreign individuals or entities…
Witnesses acknowledged that Hunter Biden involved Vice President Biden in many of his business dealings with Russian, Romanian, Chinese, Kazakhstani, and Ukrainian individuals and companies.Then-Vice President Biden met or spoke with nearly every one of the Biden family’s foreign business associates, including those from Ukraine, China, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
And of course let’s not forget Hunter Biden’s own deposition on Capitol Hill. This column noted in March that mere minutes after making yet another broad claim of not involving his father in the business, Hunter Biden confirmed the story of travelling with then-Vice President Joe Biden on Air Force Two to China and introducing his father to Jonathan Li in the lobby of the Bidens’ hotel. The following excerpt from the deposition suggests that the timing could not have been better:
[Committee member or staff]: At the time that you did introduce your father to Jonathan Li, did you or any of your business associates have any potential business with Jonathan Li?
[Hunter Biden]: I was working with Jonathan on a potential that he had an idea for creating a private equity fund based in China to do cross-border investments.
Nice. But good luck explaining what value Hunter Biden might be able to add to such an enterprise. Years later, his Chinese associates still hadn’t come up with a story. In 2019 Cissy Zhou and Jun Mai reported in the South China Morning Post:
BHR (Shanghai) Equity Investment Fund Management Company has grabbed global media attention for its links with Hunter Biden, the son of former United States vice-president Joe Biden, after US President Donald Trump fired a barrage of corruption allegations at him and requested China investigate the Bidens’ financial activities in the country.
The company has repeatedly declined to elaborate on the younger Biden’s role at the firm when contacted by the South China Morning Post via phone, mail and visits to the office. But Jonathan Li Xiangsheng, the firm’s chief executive and Hunter Biden’s partner, has said the company was working on an explanation about the American’s role.
Li refused to comment on the younger Biden when reached by the Post on Monday.
A recent visit to the firm’s registered address in Beijing found a small, plainly decorated office, where a receptionist said she had never seen Hunter Biden.
Is there anything Joe Biden said about the family business in 2020 that has turned out to be true?
Meanwhile as Vice President Kamala Harris seeks a promotion, perhaps she ought to disclose if she ever questioned anyone or learned anything about the Biden family business and its implications for American foreign policy. One would guess she was at least curious. Did she ever talk to anyone about the ethical standards for Hunter Biden’s art sales, which turned out to be a sham while she was serving alongside Joe Biden?
Vice President Harris is not just a lawyer but a former prosecutor and a former state attorney general, for goodness sake. Wasn’t she the least bit concerned?
***
Spokespeople for both the president and the vice president say that they won’t be pardoning Hunter Biden. But then why is Hunter Biden’s lawyer still making what seems like a political argument rather than a legal one?
Jack Morphet and Priscilla DeGregory report for the New York Post on comments from defense lawyer Abbe Lowell:
“Hunter decided to enter his plea to protect those he loves from unnecessary hurt and cruel humiliation,” Lowell said.
“This plea prevents that kind of show trial that would not have provided all the facts or served any real point in justice. He will now move on to the sentencing phase, while keeping open the options to raise the many clear issues with this case on appeal.”
He’s going to appeal a case in which he just pleaded guilty to all the charges? Sounds like an argument built for the White House briefing room, not a courtroom.

About Mortgage lenders near me
If you are planning to buy a house or a new car, a mortgage loan is absolutely necessary. However, you will have a bit of trouble and confusion in finding a reliable mortgage lender. Understanding that problem, Mortgagelendersnearme.Net wants to guide you on how to search for mortgage lenders near me along with some suggestions.
1. Mortgage lenders near me
You need to shop around to find the best mortgage lender. Consider different options like your bank, local credit union, online lenders, and more. Ask each of them for rates, loan terms, prepayment requirements, property insurance, closing costs and fees, and compare these details on each offer.
There are a few types of mortgage lenders that you need to pay attention to as follows:
Direct lenders (including banks, credit unions, or online organizations).
Mortgage brokers (including correspondent, wholesale, portfolio, and hard-money lenders).
Tumblr media
Direct lenders near me
We have some examples of direct lenders like credit unions, banks, online organizations, as well as other organizations which provide direct-to-consumer mortgages. This will help you won’t have to pay a realtor around the world. You may easily do it free yourself with a direct lender.
Direct lender benefits
You can ask your lenders freely questions about terms, fees or interest rates. This can be done since a direct lender offers its loans and keeps most of the contract prepare from application to processing in-house. When you shop around, talk to the lender about their information and other requirements, such as upfront payments.
Direct lender risks
It is easy to make a mistake if you are not paying attention while reading the contract, as there will be times when the interest rate and terms differ. If you apply for multiple mortgages and qualify for all of them, you need to pay close attention, or you’ll end up with a more complicated and expensive loan. There are a few people who are willing to pay for a contract comparison service for that.
Mortgage brokers near me
Mortgage brokers act like matchmakers between borrowers and lenders, which are independent and licensed professionals. The brokers are paid by the lender or borrower.  The charge will be a little rate of the advance sum for their services. Don’t worry since the fee is just a little percent (1-2 percent) of the loan amount. They do not finance loans. As well as the loan origination fees or interest rates. And you will make the decisions on your own.
Correspondent lenders
Correspondent lenders are people who specialize in selling their loans to other lenders for the difference in the second mortgage markets. Usually they will when you finish the loan.
Wholesale lenders
In the case of wholesale lenders, they will never interact with borrowers unlike direct lenders.
Often there are mortgage brokers who act as third-party intermediaries to connect you with wholesale lenders. These brokers will assist borrowers in every process as well as help them with paperwork if needed.
Portfolio lenders
These lenders derive and finance loans from customers’ bank deposits so that they can keep loans as well as not resell after closing. Portfolio lenders usually incorporate credit unions, community banks, and savings and loan organizations.
Hard money lender
In case you want to find short-term loans by real estate, you should find private individuals or groups of investors called hard money lenders. When conventional banks check your monetary capacity to pay off a contract, difficult cash banks secure their venture by concerning property esteem.
You will need to repay hard money lenders over a short period of time. This is usually around one to five years. They also typically charge higher loan initiation fees, interest rates and closing costs. It can be up to 10 percent higher in many cases.
2. Find mortgage lenders near me
Sometimes, we will find it difficult to find a mortgage lender that suits our needs. As you have seen above, there are many types of mortgage lenders and each agency or individual has different requirements. Local decisions
A local lender very well versed in the local market. They allow them to approve their own loans, who often have their own underwriters. Other resources like appraisers and holding companies oftens have good connections with local lenders.
Personal service
With a local mortgage lender, you can get personalized services. Because you will get to meet and work with them as directly as possible. They will have time to learn about you and your current financial situation. This will greatly assist your mortgage loan.

We Could Happen
Summary:
AU. The last thing Santana Lopez expects when her best friend asks her to cat-sit is to find something with the blonde in apartment 1812.
Title after the AJ Rafael song.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13667414/1/We-Could-Happen https://archiveofourown.org/works/25812445
.
.
.
Santana Lopez is not what you would call a "pet person".
Her experience with pets involved a goldfish when she was five, who didn't last till the end of the month, a pregnant hamster that gave birth, ate it's young and promptly died a few days later when she was eight and the neighbour's pitbull, who had a habit of standing with it's head over the fence and barking loudly as it jumped up and down, terrifying her every time she walked home from the bus stop.
There was also her cousin's cat, who managed to scratch up her furniture the weekend she agreed to cat-sit and the parrot her ex-girlfriend had that flew out of its cage and pooped on her favorite leather jacket, so yeah.
Santana didn't hate animals, but she did prefer that she not be in close proximity with them for extended periods of time. She much preferred the pictures of puppies and kittens that circulated on Instagram than actually having to be near one. It was perfect, all cute and no responsibility.
Which is why she almost strangled Quinn when her best friend informed her she was going to be leaving her cat in Santana's care for the foreseeable future.
"What do you mean your cat is going to be staying with me?"
"I'm being seconded to our London office," Quinn informs her. "They said six months, but it could be up to a year. I can't take Charlie with me."
"Why can't you leave him with someone else?"
"Sam and Kurt's buildings don't allow pets."
"What about Mercedes?"
"Mercedes is going on tour in a few weeks, she can't bring him."
"Yes, she can. It'll be like part of her act."
"Santana…"
"Leave him with your mom, then!"
"Santana, I'm not flying to Lima to drop him off at my mom's, when you're perfectly capable of taking care of Charlie."
"Look Q," Santana retorted. "If I wanted to take care of a cat, I would buy a cat. But I don't want one, so Charlie will just have to find somewhere else to stay."
"Come on."
"What happens if I bring a girl over? I can't just have this cat getting all up in my business while I'm trying to get my mack on!"
"He's a cat, not a child!"
"I don't have the space."
"You live in a two bedroom apartment! You have a room for your shoes!"
"Okay, first of all, it's one and a half bedrooms!" That was true, the real-estate agent had advertised it that way, which was perfect for Santana since a "half bedroom" provided a perfect excuse to never have houseguests. "And second, it's full, so there's nowhere for him to stay."
"He doesn't need his own room," Quinn rolled her eyes. "Your place is more than big enough."
"What about someone from your office? How about Ken doll? Or what's-her-face with the ugly shoes? It won't matter if he pees in them," Santana rattles off names.
"Santana, please don't make this difficult," Quinn sighed as Santana crossed her arms over her chest, indignantly. "Don't make me call it in," she says, almost warningly.
Santana narrows her eyes. "You wouldn't."
What Quinn was referring to was the favor that Santana agreed to let her call in, one time only, no questions asked.
Over the years, Santana had gotten pretty good at letting one-night-stands know that that was exactly what it was , a one night stand. It saved a lot of confusion and hurt and awkward conversations in the morning, but once in a while, even the best could slip up.
It was a few months ago when the morning after, it became obvious that Santana's latest one-night-stand intended for their relationship to become...well, a relationship, and Santana informing her that it wasn't going to become one didn't work either.
It became painfully clear to Santana that she'd taken home a crazy person and she called Quinn, who was on her way to a big meeting. Santana had pleaded with her that it would only take five minutes and that she'd owe her huge so her friend complied.
Fifteen minutes later, Quinn showed up at Santana's apartment to play the scorned girlfriend. She went on, screaming and crying about how Santana could do this to her after they were together for five years, how awful she was for cheating (on their anniversary no less) and even threw in an "I should have listened to my mother about you!" for good measure.
She really sold it. Santana was convinced Quinn was going to slap her across the face, when she heard the front door click shut behind her and Quinn turn off the waterworks.
"There, she's gone. Now move, I need to touch up my makeup before I go to my meeting," Quinn replied nonchalantly, strolling past Santana and into the bathroom.
Quinn was only five minutes late to her meeting, but Santana had to keep her promise and officially owed Quinn one favour that she was allowed to call in at any time.
Apparently, this was it.
"You're calling in the favour over your cat?"
"Apparently, I have to," Quinn rolled her eyes and let out a sigh, before the corners of her mouth turned up in a smirk. "Which means that you really can't say no."
Santana really wanted to slap that stupid smirk off her best friend's face. But alas, a deal was a deal and she'd sealed her fate on that morning many months ago when she took home that crazy (though admittedly hot) girl who really took that U-haul stereotype to heart.
Live and learn, she figured.
And that was how Santana Lopez ended up as guardian to the calico, Charlie.
"I expect him to be in the same condition when I come back," Quinn warned her, on the day he was dropped off before his human departed for London.
"No promises, Q," Santana rolled her eyes.
"I'll call to check in."
"I'm an adult, I'll be fine without you."
"I meant on him."
"When did you turn into a crazy cat lady?" Santana cracked.
Quinn's little goodbye with her cat stretched out to twenty minutes, not including the two- hour-long orientation she gave Santana about vet appointments, shots, food, litter boxes, his pet carrier and everything in between.
When the front food shut, signalling Quinn's exit, Santana looked down at Charlie, who in turn just stared up at her and meowed.
"Ok listen, we need to get one thing clear, now that your crazy mom isn't here to save you," Santana dropped down so she was closer to eye-level with the cat. "I'll do all the vet appointments and the cat food and even emptying out your nasty-ass litter-box, but if you ever pee in one of my shoes, you are done here," she said in a low growl.
Charlie meowed again and licked his paw. Santana decided to take that as an understanding.
----------
Charlie is actually not bad. Santana won't go as far as to say she enjoys having him around, but she doesn't hate it.
He walked around the apartment like he owned the place and climbed up on the furniture, but all things considered he was pretty good. He went in his litter box and knew his feeding routine.
During the first week, Santana came home from work to find the legs of her coffee table totally scratched up. She brought out the eyesore that was his bright blue scratching post on full display in her living room so that he could use it instead, but Quinn informed her that Charlie was probably just getting antsy from being alone in the apartment all week.
Santana installed a kitty door so that he'd be free to roam about the apartment complex during the day and come home when he needed and leave her damn stuff alone. Since then, he seemed calmer when he was indoors and would take to lying on the couch next to her when she was watching TV.
So yeah. Santana figured having Charlie around wasn't the worst thing in the world.
She could, however, do without Quinn's constant need for updates on her cat. Based on her social media posts, Quinn was having the time of her life in London, meeting new people and going to new places.
However, based on her messages to Santana - it seemed less like she was a socially active woman in her twenties living it up, and more like she was a fifty year old cat-mom missing her cat-child, with nothing else to do.
[Quinn]: Did you feed him today?
[Quinn]: He likes the chicken flavour.
[Quinn]: Is he getting enough exercise?
[Quinn]: Can you send me pics of him?
[Quinn]: You're giving him baths regularly, right Satan?
[Quinn]: If anything seems wrong TAKE HIM TO THE VET
[Quinn]: How is he today?
Santana got so tired of the messages that eventually she started trolling Quinn so that the blonde would leave her alone.
[Santana]: Congrats, grandma! Charlie knocked up the neighbour's cat. You have nine of them to come home to!
[Santana]: Cats can drink scotch right? Cause I accidentally poured the wrong thing into his bowl.
[Santana]: Charlie's a persian right? Cause that's who's sitting on my couch rn.
-----------
Santana had settled into routine with her new roommate. It wasn't like she had to walk the cat or anything, so she made sure that there was food in his bowl before she left for work and he was usually home by the time she got back anyway.
In between she guessed that he was wandering the neighbourhood looking for mice or whatever it is that cats do. Whatever, he didn't touch her shoes and her furniture and frankly that was the best she could hope for.
Work on the other hand, left much to be desired.
Santana was the youngest person in management at one of the most promising new marketing and PR agencies in Los Angeles. She'd been there since interning in her senior year of college and knew the ins and outs of the business better than almost anyone. She was sharp, effective and knew how to get things done. It also meant that she spent too much time at the office.
You know what they say, if you need something done, give it to the busiest person at the office.
"Miss Lopez," her assistant, Marley, stepped into the door of her office. "The Mucusin people are here."
Mucusin was a new over-the-counter cold medicine soon to be released in stores. Santana had advised them to change the name, but they were pretty adamant about keeping it so it seemed like she was going to have her work cut out for her.
"Send them in."
-----------
So it turned out the Mucusin people were not only married to the name, but to the idea of keeping the packaging green.
Santana had to fight an eyeroll when she gave that directive to the design team to come up with a few samples incorporating that particular shade of green.
When she finally got home, she spotted Charlie, sitting on the arm of the couch, waiting for her and meowing expectantly.
"Yeah, yeah, you'll get your food," she grumbled, putting her things down, opening a can of Cat Chow and emptying it into his bowl.
Once she'd fulfilled her obligation, she ordered some food for herself on her phone and headed into the shower, wishing to wash all the stress of the day off before her dinner arrived.
She eats in front of the TV, when she notices that Charlie barely touches his food. Santana squints at him. He looked... different, something was off.
She gets distracted when Real Housewives comes on.
It's probably nothing.
-----------
Santana makes a hundred cat-lady jokes at Quinn's expense before complying when Quinn asks Santana to help her face-time Charlie.
"Oh my God, Santana!"
"What?"
"Why's he so fat? What have you been feeding him?"
"I just feed him the stuff you told me to buy, it's not cheap by the way, Q," she flips the camera back around so that Quinn's facing her and not the cat. "I don't even know what the big deal is, he looks-"
Santana's about to say fine when she gets a good look at the cat for the first time in weeks. That stupid Mucusin campaign's been taking up all her attention, that she didn't even notice. Charlie's gotten fat.
"I told you, you better return him in the same condition you got him!" Quinn chastises.
"Well, I'm not returning him yet," Santana huffs. "And I didn't take you for a fat-shamer, Lucy Caboosey."
Quinn scowls at that remark. "Seriously, calicos are supposed to weigh like 7 or 8 pounds. How much does he weigh?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know? He was supposed to have a vet appointment last week!"
"Yeah but I didn't finish that Mucusin campaign until yesterday. I thought it would be fine to delay it by a week."
"Satan, I swear to God-"
"I'll take him!" Santana sighs exaggeratedly. "God, the way you fuss over your cat, wouldn't it be easier to just have a child?"
"Santana-"
"It'll be fine," she eyes the cat from his place by the coffee table. "He hasn't gotten that fat has he?"
"Yes!"
-----------
Santana takes Charlie to the vet and in six weeks in her care he's managed to put on five pounds. It's not a good look.
The vet recommends some diet cat food and that Charlie get some exercise. Since he's already out the whole day, Santana buys the way too expensive diet cat food and hopes that it will fix the situation.
She's not thrilled with the idea of having to spend her weekends taking the cat for a walk.
After another week, she manages to wrestle him onto the bathroom scale for long enough to see that he's not losing weight.
The mystery of the cat's weight gain finally gains traction while she's at work and her boss, Shelby pulls her into her office.
"Cheating scandal broke today," she places a file down in front of Santana.
"What are we dealing with?"
"Throat Explosion's lead singer came down with a case of mono, gave it to his girlfriend."
"So?"
"So, the day after, the bassist comes down with a case of mono too. The girlfriend's an actress, she's getting a pretty big following and the singer's taking a lot of heat. She kicked him out."
"He slept with the bassist?"
Shelby nods. "There were rumors before, but no one ever bothered to address it, they thought it would go away."
"Well it's not going to now. What do they want us to do?"
"What do you think?" Shelby raised a brow. "PR. They need damage control."
-----------
#Monogate gave Santana the breakthrough she needed. There was a third party involved. If she wasn't making changes to his diet and he was roaming about all day, there must be an external reason as to why he was gaining weight.
It's a Saturday when Santana finally decides that today will be the day she figures out who's been fattening up the cat.
She's bought him a tracking collar which synced with her phone. She checked the record previously to see that Charlie was only really exploring the apartment complex, never straying too far away from it. So she deduces it's someone else who lives in one of the apartments.
Santana knows that she has to move fast. Despite his weight gain, Charlie could still climb high and squeeze into spaces she couldn't.
When the sneaky little bastard slipped out from his kitty door, Santana quickly followed him out, tracking his steps on the app on her phone. It led her past the courtyard and into the garden patch of the complex, just by the fountain.
She waded through various potted plants, through the small pavement path in a mostly-grass covered area. A few of the plants had grown a little too tall and wound up smacking her in the face with their leaves. Santana kept glancing at her phone to make sure she was on the right track and was validated when she heard the sound of something being set down on the concrete and a pleased meow.
She scrambled through the rest of the plants and through the clearing, finding a woman, sitting on the bench and Charlie eating from a little orange cat bowl.
"Aha!" Santana exclaimed, leaping out from the garden and accusingly pointing at the cat, who didn't seem the least bit perturbed. She did however, come face to face with an amused looking woman.
Santana had expected some sad old guy who didn't have any friends and had taken to stealing the attention of the neighbour's cat but this woman was...well, gorgeous.
"Hi," the woman greeted her, seemingly unshaken by Santana's abrupt entrance.
"Hi," Santana managed to get out. "You're...you're the one who's been feeding my cat?"
"Oh is he yours?" she asks, reaching down to pet Charlie. "He likes to stop by here."
"Yeah, I mean...sort of," Santana frowns trying to explain the situation. "He's not mine, but he's in my care."
"Are you sure? Are you sure you're not a catnapper?"
Santana is partially amused but also a little offended. "Of course not! How can you accuse me of being a catnapper when you're the one feeding other people's pets?"
The woman frowns. "Feeding isn't the same as catnapping."
"So it's you? You're the one who's been fattening him up?"
"That's mean," the woman creases her forehead and pouts a little, rubbing Charlie's furry head. "I think he looks fine just as he is."
"What's he eating anyway?"
"Tuna casserole."
Santana's feelings of offense evaporate at this point and she's just confused.
"What?"
"My roommate is trying to learn to cook for her boyfriend," the woman explains. "I don't think it's very good but Cheeto seems to like it."
"Cheeto?"
She looks a little embarrassed. Santana thinks it's kind of cute. "That's not his name?"
"No, uh, his name is Charlie."
"Oh, I've been calling him Cheeto. The orange spots on his fur are kinda cheeto shaped. He doesn't seem to mind," she adds.
"No, I'm sure he doesn't."
Now sensing that Santana was out of accusation mode, the woman extended her hand.
"I'm Brittany, by the way. 1812," she gestures to the apartment behind her.
Santana shook it. "Santana. 1820"
"I like your name."
"Thanks. My mom picked it out."
Santana was horrified at the words that just left her mouth. What the hell was that? She knows how to talk to beautiful women, ok? She's just having an off day. Apparently her game had just decided to up and leave and go on vacation without telling her first.
Brittany giggles at that and scoots over a little on the bench, inviting Santana, mouth still slightly agape from her words, to take a seat next to her. She obliges and just stares down at Charlie tucking into his tuna casserole. She mostly stares down at the cat because Brittany's eyes are so very blue.
"So how long has this been going on exactly?"
"Maybe a month," Brittany shrugs. "He just kind of started coming around and one time he looked kinda hungry so I fed him the leftover's my roommate cooked. After that he kinda started coming around a lot."
"Leftovers huh? I guess the Cat Chow I've been feeding him doesn't really compare."
"Depends on the brand you buy, but usually cats prefer people-food even if it's not always the best for them. I try to only feed him stuff that cats would normally eat, like chicken and fish. Only stuff that they'd be able to catch in the wild."
"Huh. I had no idea about any of that."
"Ok, one time I fed him steak," Brittany says, looking a little guilty.
"Wow."
"My roommate bought this 14-pack of steak from Costco and I messed up with the freezing and the defrosting and we ended up just having to cook all of them. I thought maybe he should eat some before it went bad…" she trails off. "He seemed to really like it."
Santana chuckles a little. "Lucky Charlie, I bet he's the most well-fed cat in LA."
"Even more than all those pets to the stars?"
"Oh, totally, especially since he's apparently been getting double meals."
Brittany laughs and for reasons she doesn't quite understand, Santana can hear her heart beating louder in her chest.
"Sorry, if I've been stealing him away from you," she apologizes. "I just miss having a cat around."
"You had a cat before?"
"He lives back home with my parents. My roommate's allergic so I couldn't get another one even if I wanted to. I miss him sometimes. Even if he was leaking pages of my diary on the internet."
"Oh," Santana says, obviously confused. "Sounds like kind of a jerk."
"Yeah, but he has a good heart under all his addictions and gang affiliations."
"Right."
"So is Charlie your first?" Brittany asks.
"Is it that obvious I don't know what I'm doing?" Santana laughs. "I guess so. I mean, technically he's my friend's cat but she got sent to London for a couple months for work so she asked me to take care of him."
"I think you're actually doing pretty well considering he's your first cat. They're not as easy to take care of as everyone thinks," she comments as Charlie finishes his tuna casserole and jumps up onto the bench, where Brittany can pet him.
"Thanks."
"I also think you're a good friend."
Santana feels herself starting to blush and looks down at the ground to avoid eye contact. "You just met me. There's no way you could know that."
"Yeah but you're looking after your friend's cat while she's away, even though you don't really have any experience in it and you even tracked down to see where he was going when you thought something was up. Sounds like a pretty good friend to me."
"Yeah, well…" she mumbles, not sure of how to respond. "Listen, I think um, I think I'd be cool if you wanted to still hang out with Charlie and stuff. He seems to like you and I doubt I could stop him even if I wanted to."
Brittany's eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Yeah. Maybe just go easy on the steak, though. My friend is a total helicopter cat-mom and she's not super happy with all the weight gain."
"I know an Atkins diet that might help."
"I mean, yeah, if you think-"
"Oh, thank you Santana!" with a big grin on her face, Brittany leaned forward and wrapped her arms around Santana in a big hug. The brunette was taken aback by it, clearly not expecting it, but was pleasantly surprised.
"Sorry," Brittany pulled away, looking a little embarrassed.
"No, don't be," she managed to get out. "Listen, Brittany, would it be cool if I got your number?" Santana realizes instantly what it sounds like and quickly tries to explain herself. "Since I obviously have no idea what I'm doing with this cat thing. Just, so I could like, text you if I have questions about cat food brands or going to the vet or something. You know, for Charlie's sake and everything," she added quickly.
"Totally," Brittany grinned. "I'll be like your cat whisperer."

Authors Notes:
If anyone here ever watched the show Chuck, the apartment complex in that show is kind of what I imagine the apartment complex here looks like.
I actually came up with this idea many years ago, but I didn't put pen to paper till recently. It was inspired by the fact that at a certain point my friend (and her parents) ended up feeding their neighbours cat on a regular basis and it started to get fat. This is also the first multi-chap I've written in years and the first Brittana multi-chap I've written at all.

Moving Your Goods Versus Selling and Buying
Moving your personal goods, much less your family, can be a daunting thought, but after a careful review of all your options, you will see that it needs not be a difficult ordeal, just one that requires thought and organization. Hopefully, this post will help you arrive at the thought process.
I have done a big move of personal goods only three times, and I was boxed in (no pun intended) by the same thought process each time. I have come to discover that there are many ways to consider the move to Costa Rica, and some may be much cheaper or at the very least less stressful and requiring less coordination.
The first thing I learned about moving goods to Costa Rica is to find your mover in Costa Rica and coordinate the move through him, as you want to be able to deal with someone local from this end, just in case there should be any questions or problems. How logically simple is that? But had I not been advised, I would have called a mover from Dallas, and I think it would have caused more logistical problems in the long run.
Here are some of the mistakes I made. We brought everything, and I do mean everything. We should have had multiple garage sales prior to the move because we downsized from a 3,000 sq. ft. house to a 2,300 sq. ft house, and we had acquired junk from the previous 20+ years. We knew we wanted to build and no longer wanted a dining room, as we discovered it was wasted space in our last home just to store a dining room set. But we certainly brought everything else. George Carlin has a gig on "stuff", and everyone should listen to that before coming to Costa Rica. It took a little over a year for us to actually move into our house, which meant that we paid, by the square meter, to store our goods, which is an expense we had not considered. Had I had the opportunity to do it again, I would have brought our bedroom set, living room furniture, dishes/silverware, and that's it! Yes, special art pieces and personal belongings, but about half what we brought. That would have cut our moving and storage tab in half.
You can buy American appliances here, and yes, at a higher expense, but still less than moving and storing yours from home. Personal goods are not taxed, but goods that are new are subject to taxation. Many times they are not taxed if you have one of each, but if you bring 10 new flat screen TVs, chances are you will be taxed a very large amount. If you want to have no questions about taxation, Barry will develop a flat-rate move that includes your taxation. You needn't worry about this, as his company will handle all the details and dealings with Customs and deliver your goods to his storage facility or your new house.
I would suggest you get a 3-ring binder and keep all the papers related to moving in this notebook. If you pack goods yourself, label the box with the contents of each box and keep a copy of that in your notebook. If you have professional packers, make sure you get a listing of each box's contents, and that the box is labeled with the contents that you have a copy of in your 3-ring binder. All the paperwork related to Customs should be kept here also.
The following are some tips on what you should do before and after you move to Costa Rica:
Two Months before Moving:
1. Gather your moving supplies (boxes, tape, rope, etc.). Begin packing.2. Make any necessary travel arrangements (airline, hotel, and rental car reservations).3. Call a moving company or make truck rental reservations to move your goods.4. Cover your real estate temporary & permanent needs.5. Keep your legal, medical, and insurance records in a safe and accessible place.6. Give your new address to all your mailers (family members, friends, banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions, charge card and credit card companies, doctors, dentists, and other service providers, state and federal tax authorities, and other government agencies).7. Keep your moving receipts (many moving expenses are tax deductible).
Two Weeks before Moving:
1. Notify gas, electric, water, cable, local telephone, and trash removal services of your move, and sign up for their services at your new address.2. Notify long distance Phone Company of your move.3. Arrange help for your moving-day.4. Confirm your travel reservation.5. If needed, make arrangements to close or transfer your bank account.
Packing Tips:
1. Make sure you have the following supplies and accessories: boxes (all sizes), bubble wrap or other cushioning material, marking pens, tape measure, furniture pads or old blankets, packing tape and scissors, and money and credit cards.2. Label each box with the room in the new home to which it should be moved.3. Make an itemized list of what you're packing with a yard-sale price on each item, so you don't have to pay too many taxes when your household arrives at the Costa Rican customs. Personal household goods are exempt.4. Number the boxes, and keep a list of what is in each box.5. Mark any fragile item.6. Pack your personal items (clothes, toiletries, medicine, maps, food, and drinks) into a bag, and keep it in an easy-to-find place.7. Keep a medical kit accessible.
After Your Move:
1. Locate police, fire, and gas stations as well as hospitals near your home.2. Locate shopping areas in your new neighborhood.3. Find out which day the trash is collected and whether your new community has recycling programs.4. Seek out new service providers (banks, cleaners, doctors, dentists, and veterinarians).5. Provide your new doctor and dentist with your medical history. You may need to request your file from your previous doctor and/or dentist.6. Find out more information about schools, cable service, cultural events, community activities, and the availability of emergency calling services (such as 911) in your new neighborhood.7. Transfer your insurance policies to an agent in your new community. If necessary, make a detailed list of all your belongings, their value, and your coverage.

The listing was jointly held by Jade Mills at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and Craig Knizek at The Agency and the as-yet unidentified buyer was repped by Jonathan Nash and Stephen Resnick, both from Hilton & Hyland.
Stefani has long owned two other, far more modest homes in Los Angeles, one in West Hollywood and another in a sought after Hancock Park adjacent neighborhood, while her longtime boyfriend, Platinum selling country music singer Blake Shelton, also a coach on “The Voice,” owns “Ten Point Ranch,” a vast and fairly remote ranch about half way between Dallas and Oklahoma City as well as a Hawaiian-themed getaway near Kingston, Okla., on the shore of Lake Texoma. Since late last year the celebrity real estate rumor mill has been abuzz the “Hollaback Girl” singer and the “Some Beach” singer have been house hunting in some of the San Fernando Valley’s more expensive neighborhoods and last month there were unconfirmed reports the unmarried pair bought a house “in the Los Angeles area.”

Tumblr media
On Saturday morning of August 15th, 2009 the police of Buena Park, California were called to a grim crime scene. A beaten and mutilated body of a woman had been found crammed into a suitcase. The suitcase had been partially zipped shut, and then thrown into a dumpster. The woman’s teeth had been individually pulled from her mouth. Her fingers had been removed as well. The cause of death was determined to be from strangulation, and the murder had occurred only a few hours before the body was found. The mutilation was post mortem, done in an attempt to conceal the victim’s identity.
Three days later on August 18th investigators were able to give a name to the woman in the suitcase. They found the identification by tracking down the serial number on the victim’s breast implants. Her name was Jasmine Fiore.
Jasmine Fiore was radiant, fun loving, and always full of smiles. In her youth, Fiore was considered to be a tom-boy, and could often be found playing football with the boys. Those who knew Jasmine said she was a hard worker. She would wake up each morning with an agenda. She had built a career as a bikini model, and frequently worked as entertainment for parties and casinos in Vegas. Fiore had also acted in a few commercials for swim suits and adult phone lines. After turning twenty-eight, she was preparing to leave her modeling days behind, and settle down with a more suburban lifestyle. The distrubing news of Jasmine's murder shocked her family and friends. She was so happy; how could her life be over?
"Every picture that you see with her, with the big smile, that was her, " Ken Henderson, chief executive of the talent agency Fiore used, said. "And you could just feel it, it was real, it wasn't a phony smile, it wasn't the picture-taking smile, it was who she was."
Fiore’s white Mercedes was discovered in a parking lot in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, just a mile away from the penthouse she shared with her husband, Ryan Jenkins. Inside the couple’s home, investigators found a large amount of blood, some of Fiore’s hair that they believed had been pulled out during the struggle.
Ryan Jenkins was a real estate investor. Like Fiore, he also had stars in his eyes. He managed to land a role on a VH1 reality show called “Megan Wants a Millionaire”, where Jenkins competed along side of sixteen other, wealthy men to win the love of former “Rock of Love” contestant, Megan Hauserman. The show completed filming in March, 2009. Two days after wrap up, Jenkins traveled to Las Vegas, where he met Jasmine Fiore. Their love was instant, and on March 18th, only two days after meeting, the couple married in The Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas strip.
The honeymoon period did not last long. Jenkins, who already had a history of domestic violence, began to physically and emotionally abuse his new wife. At first, Fiore tried to keep her personal hell a secret until one incident that pushed her to walk away. During an argument, Jenkins hit Fiore, and then pushed her into a pool, fully clothed. After this event, Fiore filed a domestic violence complaint against him. The couple decided to separate. Jasmine returned to Las Vegas, where she could surround herself with people who loved her, and Jenkins traveled to Mexico. When he returned in July, the couple reconciled and tried to give their relationship another shot. On August 13th the couple went to L'Auberge Del Mar Hotel in San Diego for a poker event. This would be the last time they were seen together.
At 8:55 PM on August 15th, 2009 Richard Jenkins reported Fiore as missing. He told the police he had not seen his wife since the evening August 14th. He claimed that the couple had just returned from the poker event when Jasmine decided to run a quick errand. She never returned.
Despite his apparent concern for his wife, Richard Jenkins was nowhere to be found. Jenkins had fled Los Angeles, and went to Nevada, where he picked up his speed boat. At this time, there were no charges against Jenkins. While in Utah, he contacted the police on August 17th, saying that he was heading back to his home country of Canada to fix some immigration problems. No one would hear from Jenkins for two more days when he called his father, who then informed Jenkins that his wife had been murdered.
On August 20th, 2009 Richard Jenkins was charged with the gruesome murder of Jasmine Fiore. A nationwide man hunt for the one time reality star began, and the U.S. Marshall's Service offered a $25,000 reward for his capture. Once it was publically announced that Jenkins was wanted for murder, VH1 decided to pull “Megan Wants a Millionaire” and remove all information related to the show out of respect for Jasmine and the Fiore family. At 6:00 PM that day Jenkins arrived the Thunderbird Motel in Hope, British Columbia, Canada. He was not alone; he had his half sister with him. The motel manager knew something was off when the guests decided to park near a dumpster rather than the rooms. Jenkins remained in the car while the half sister went inside to register a room. The booked for three nights, paying entirely with cash. The manager said he saw little activity from them during the weekend, and did not recognize Richard Jenkins from the television reports.
At about 11:30 AM on August 23rd the motel manager and his nephew decided to check on room after the couple failed to check out that morning. Inside they found Richard Jenkins, dead. Seven days after Jasmine Fiore's murder, he hung himself on a clothing rack by using his belt. Police were unable to find a suicide note at the scene, however, they did recover a one page note titled “Last Will and Testament” on Jenkins’ computer. It had been written on August 20th, 2009.

What is the requirement of a fingerprint clearance?
Tumblr media
If your Fingerprint clearance is expiring, or you are simply looking to apply for the first time, it can take the Department of Public Safety up to ten weeks for the process. Keep in mind to make sure your card is renewed or first ordered in time for you to report to school. You can’t stay in the classroom without carrying a genuine fingerprint card. As all the professional programs comprise fieldwork, candidates to all College of Education professional preparation programs should give a front and back copy of their identity verified fingerprint (IVP) fingerprint card at the time of professional admission.
Read more : Get Your Fingerprinting Services Near You
All students should also have IVP clearance for the purpose of obtaining certification to teach. Students who remain unable to submit verification of having a valid IVP fingerprint clearance card will not be enrolled for professional classes. If you are in the USA currently, you will be required to complete the Online Application for your card at the Department of Public Safety website. Select Apply for a Card to begin. Subsequently, you will need to take your receipt to an approved vendor and have your fingerprints captured electronically. Both steps need to be completed (online application and in-person fingerprinting) in order to obtain your card.

The agency for fingerprinting have to then mail the completed packet to the Department of Public Safety using the envelope provided.A fingerprint clearance card is a clearance offered by the Department of Public Safety determining the suitability of particular candidates for particular professions and activities that are regulated. There are two different types of fingerprint clearance cards available. Level 1 Clearance Card and Standard Fingerprint Clearance Cards. A Level 1 Clearance Card is more obstructive and more complex to obtain as there are more types of criminal charges that would cause a rejection of the Card.

Number of professions and activities need you to have a fingerprint clearance card. Examples of jobs and activities demanding fingerprint clearance cards involve: professionals regulated by the Board of Dental examiners; Charter School Employment; Child Day Care; Domestic Violence Shelter employment; Home Inspector authentication; Physical Therapists; Real Estate Authorization; School Bus Drivers; Teacher Authentications; nursing schools and adoptions. On the basis of professions, you may be required to apply for a Level 1 Clearance Card whereas others only require the standard fingerprint clearance card. If you are not sure about what clearance card you need, go to the site https://www.anshinotary.com/ .
Why Should You Need Livescan Fingerprint In Los Angeles And Beyond?
On the other hand, if your criminal history shows any misdemeanor whether it be an attempted, solicitation, facilitation, or conspiracy to commit an offense under ARS § 41-1758.03 or ARS § 41-1758.07, you will be rejected a fingerprint clearance card. But, if your criminal history does not demonstrate any one of these charges, you will be given a fingerprint clearance card. If your condemnation lies under Paragraph B of either ARS § 41-1758.03 or ARS § 41-1758.07, you would be prohibited from applying for a good cause exception. If your condemnation falls under Paragraph C of ARS § 41-1758.03 or ARS § 41-1758.07, you may petition the board for a good cause exception. Many healthcare professions are needed to have an active fingerprint clearance card prior to beginning their employment. When you join the Adult care support team, all caregivers are required to provide a copy of this card within the first 30 days of employment.   Contrasting to a background clearance which is a one-time check of criminal history, the fingerprint clearance card is controlled for any new criminal activity that would potentially put a senior care client in danger.
Tumblr media
You would need a fingerprint clearance card as a condition of employment in particular cases. This can be the case for anyone working directly with the most vulnerable populations, containing the elderly, children, and hospital patients. The objective of the card is to perform a thorough criminal background check with the FBI. Upon completion of the background check, candidates will have the chance to challenge the accuracy of the outcomes. To get a card, the Department of Public Safety carries ongoing criminal checks of applicants to determine their suitability to receive and maintain a card. house for sale beverly hills
One of the most coveted neighbourhoods in the country is Beverly Hills. Here, real estate is a very valuable asset and a long-term investment that will only increase in value. The Golden Triangle is a prime real estate market for both individual and corporate investors, whether you're thinking about selling your estate or looking to buy a home in southern California.
Beverly Hills wasn't always one of the nation's most fashionable suburbs. In fact, the area was primarily made up of farming and ranching property in the late 1800s. The Tongva tribe of Native Americans first inhabited the area before this time of cultivation. The Amalgamated Oil Company bought a large portion of the property in the beginning of the 20th century. The area was sold to the Rodeo Land and Water Company for residential development after the company's attempts to drill for oil failed. The famous Beverly Hills Hotel was built in 1912 and became the centre of social activity for the locals. When Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford built their renowned house, known as "Pickfair," on Summit Drive in 1919, they helped the city become more well-known. It then attracted famous residents like Will Rogers, Charlie Chaplin, John Barrymore, and Rudolph Valentino, making it one of the hottest residential areas in the world. The region had a dramatic rise in residential construction from the early 1920s until the 1950s. What was once farmland was transformed into one of the country's most desirable towns after the construction of hip hotels, shops, and restaurants.
Today, Beverly Hills remains a significant component of the Hollywood scene while being an independently incorporated corporation. Because of the region's unrivalled natural beauty, wide range of housing options, and vibrant cultural life, many members of the Hollywood elite choose to make this their home. The region is recognised for its residents' enjoyment of seclusion and luxury. Los Angeles' neighbourhoods and suburbs, as well as natural areas like the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, are all conveniently close by. Less than an hour away, the Pacific Ocean beckons with its clear blue waters and ideal surfing conditions. There are many more reasonable options available in Beverly Hills, despite the fact that many people identify the city with ostentatiously opulent mansions of the affluent and famous. There are also more reasonably priced single family homes and chic condominiums in this attractive town for people who want to live there but aren't so interested in a multi-million dollar price tag.
Make sure to get in touch with a reliable Beverly Hills realtor if you're thinking about selling your home there. It is crucial to choose a real estate agent who is knowledgeable about the ins and outs of this very upscale real estate market. Look for recommendations from other neighbours and acquaintances who own property in the Golden Triangle if you do not already know of such an agency. The right real estate agent will be able to provide you precise pricing recommendations for your house and make suggestions for changes that would increase the home's marketability and worth.
There may not be a better moment to think about buying a home in southern California for those considering the idea of doing so. Property values will undoubtedly rise in the near future if history is any guide. But keep in mind that things move swiftly in the Beverly Hills real estate market. To ensure that you will be able to purchase your dream house as soon as it becomes available, make sure to work with a realtor who is very knowledgeable about this area.
No matter what kind of property you're searching for—an English style Tudor, a modern house, or a Spanish-style hacienda—Beverly Hills is sure to have the ideal option to fit your requirements and preferences. Many homes in Beverly Hills have gorgeous water features, pools, Jacuzzis, gardens, saunas, and other amenities. Beverly Hills mansions are also nicely planted. Beverly Hills is a great spot to invest in the real estate market because it has access to some of the top schools in the world, fantastic shopping, culture, and entertainment, all in the neighbourhood of one of the most vibrant metropolitan areas in the United States.
According to the real estate market, Beverly Hills homes for sale may be at its best right now due to historically low borrowing rates. You can't wait any longer!

Let's not forget that Joe Biden is corrupt to the core! this gets forgotten in the cesspool of mainstream media and the thirst for breaking news! The sooner America rids itself of Biden and the members of the Biden Administration, the better!
______________________________________________________________

Toronto, the Quietly Booming Tech Town (NYT) In late February, Microsoft opened four floors of new office space near the top of a 50-story glass tower in downtown Toronto, a block from Scotiabank Arena, home of the Maple Leafs and the Raptors. Apple and Amazon were already in towers just down the street, and Google was about to open a new building around the corner. Meta, formerly Facebook, did not yet have an office downtown, but many Toronto start-ups complained that the social media company was driving tech salaries to Silicon Valley levels as it recruited top engineers across the city. During the pandemic, it was hiring anyone willing to work from home. A few blocks north, construction workers in yellow vests and hard hats were finishing three floors of new office space for another social media company: Pinterest. Stripe, an American payments company, was opening an office near City Hall, where Klarna, a Scandinavian payments company, had just announced its arrival with a flashy photo op alongside Mayor John Tory. As the tech industry continues to expand and communities all over the world compete for tech jobs outside Silicon Valley, many executives, investors and entrepreneurs are promoting warm climes like Austin and Miami as the next big tech hubs. But they are tiny tech communities compared with the new hub growing in the cool air along the shore of Lake Ontario. Thanks to years of investment from local universities, government agencies and business leaders and Canada’s liberal immigration policies, Toronto is now the third-largest tech hub in North America. It is home to more tech workers than Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Washington, D.C., trailing only New York and Silicon Valley, according to CBRE, a real estate company that tracks tech hiring.
U.S. imports little from Ukraine and Russia, but food and farming costs are expected to rise (Washington Post) Richard Guebert is getting ready to plant corn, wheat and soybeans in southern Illinois, about 50 miles south of St. Louis. But for reasons connected to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, he and his fellow farmers are concerned about how their upcoming growing season will go. Even though only a fraction of the food eaten in the United States is imported, with much of that coming from Mexico and Canada, the ripple effects of the conflict in Ukraine will conspire to further drive up food prices and keep them high into next year, analysts say. And because Russia is a main producer of fertilizer and other agricultural chemicals, the conflict is likely to have an impact what is grown this year on American soil. Guebert has seen the effects firsthand. His fertilizer cost was $510 a ton last year, he said. This year, it’s $1,508. He has no choice but to pay it to meet his target crop yields, he said, and while the price he is paid for his grain will rise, too, “prices will reach a point where no one can afford to purchase them.”
After War, the Journey Home Takes a Lifetime (Epoch Times) Sailor Lawrence Markworth was eager to jump in the whaleboat to help search for a downed American pilot in the ocean near Vietnam in 1964. The war was in full swing. “We spotted a helmet bobbing in the water, and it looked like he was alive. We were all excited: ‘We’re going to rescue a pilot. This is so cool,’” he recalled. “We get up to him … but he was dead. I remember everybody hoisting him aboard, and the ship was just silent. It was … I don’t know, these things are still difficult to talk about.” Now 77, he has spent decades battling addictions and his deeper wounds of moral injury and feeling betrayed by his country. He also battled the Veterans Administration (VA) for years over his exposure to Agent Orange and the illnesses he subsequently developed. “It’s more difficult to return than sometimes it is to go to war,” he said. “The day I got out of the military, I was so happy. And yet, I didn’t realize that it was going to be some of the darkest times of my life.” Psychotherapist Ed Tick, who has worked with veterans for 45 years, said the VA’s treatment of veterans in the United States is “woefully inadequate and mostly dependent on medications—which the veterans don’t want.” “Military service and warfare are such extraordinarily penetrating and transformational experiences that they do live in the veterans’ minds and hearts as about the most important and intense thing they ever experienced. So for the rest of us, well, the war’s over. But for them, no, it’s never over,” Tick said.
Russia Broadens Mariupol Assault as Signs of Stalemate Take Shape (NYT) Firing rockets and bombs from the land, air and—probably for the first time—from warships in the Sea of Azov, Russian forces broadened their bombardment of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol on Sunday and have forcibly deported thousands of residents, according to city officials and witnesses. Among the freshly devastated was an art school, where about 400 residents were hiding, according to city officials who claimed it had been bombed by Russian forces targeting civilians. The number of casualties was not known. Into the fourth week of the Russian assault on the country, the coastal city—a strategic port that would give Russia control over much of Ukraine’s southern coast—has increasingly become a grim symbol of Russian frustration that its superior manpower and weaponry have not forced the quick capitulation of the country. And it has come to symbolize Russia’s brutality, with its forces increasingly targeting civilian sites with long-range missiles to crush the public’s spirit and break the Ukrainian military resistance. The city has been without food, water, electricity or gas since the early days after the Feb. 24 invasion. But its situation deteriorated even more over the weekend, with reports of raging street battles and Russian forces successfully conquering three neighborhoods.
Russia’s bombs and bullets not the only things killing Ukrainians. Stress is, too. (NBC News) Russia’s bombs and bullets did not kill Liubov Hrudiy—the stress of war did. Following a perilous journey from eastern Ukraine with her grandson, Hrudiy, 73, died minutes after arriving in the western city of Lviv last week. Now her grandson, Vladyslav, 17, has to live with the nonphysical scars of that trauma. He’s not alone. The more than 3.1 million Ukrainians who have fled their country since Russia invaded it on Feb. 24 will all carry invisible scars with them long after they reach safety. Zarlasht Halaimzai, CEO and co-founder of the Refugee Trauma Initiative, said that the stress of the experience can manifest itself physically—through body aches and lack of sleep. And it can have profound impacts on children, affecting their ability to learn, form healthy relationships and even walk. To [one doctor], the antidote to the helplessness and hopelessness many refugees experience is a return to normalcy and restoring a sense of community.
Russia Is Losing Tens of Thousands of Outward-Looking Young Professionals (NYT) At the Lumen cafe in the Armenian capital, Russians arrive as soon as the doors open, ordering specialty coffees, opening up their sleek Apple laptops and trying to navigate a dwindling array of options for starting their lives over. This is a different kind of exodus—tens of thousands of young, urban, multilingual professionals who are able to work remotely from almost anywhere, many of them in information technology or freelancers in creative industries. Russia is hemorrhaging outward-looking young professionals who were part of a global economy that has largely cut off their country. Before the war broke out, only about 3,000 to 4,000 Russians were registered as workers in Armenia, according to officials. But in the two weeks following the invasion, at least an equal number arrived almost every day in this small country. While thousands have moved on to other destinations, government officials said late last week that about 20,000 remained. Tens of thousands more are looking to start new lives in other countries. The speed and scale of the exodus are evidence of a seismic shift that the invasion set off inside Russia. Though President Vladimir V. Putin repressed dissent, Russia until last month remained a place where people could travel relatively unfettered overseas, with a mostly uncensored internet that gave a platform to independent media, a thriving tech industry and a world-class arts scene. Life was good, the émigrés said.
Driven to extremes (Guardian) Days before Afghanistan fell to the Taliban last August, President Ashraf Ghani took a helicopter to the United Arab Emirates, allegedly carrying with him $169 million from the country’s treasury. Ghani’s former finance minister, Khalid Payenda, also left Afghanistan, headed to the U.S. Six months later, Payenda is driving an Uber in Washington D.C. and barely making ends meet. “If I complete 50 trips in the next two days I receive a $95 bonus,” he said from behind the wheel of a Honda Accord. The 40-year-old once oversaw a U.S.- supported $6 billion budget. Payenda is grateful for the opportunity to support his family but feels as though he doesn’t have a place he really belongs. He became finance minister in late 2020, after his mother died of Covid-19 in an impoverished Kabul hospital. He now wishes he hadn’t taken the job. “I saw a lot of ugliness, and we failed. I was part of the failure. It’s difficult when you look at the misery of the people and you feel responsible,” he said.
US to declare Rohingya repression in Myanmar a ‘genocide’ (AP) The Biden administration intends to declare that Myanmar’s years-long repression of the Rohingya Muslim population is a “genocide,” U.S. officials said Sunday. The designation does not in and of itself portend drastic new measures against Myanmar’s military-led government, which has already been hit with multiple layers of U.S. sanctions since the campaign against the Rohingya ethnic minority began in the country’s western Rakhine state in 2017. But it could lead to additional international pressure on the government, which is already facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Human rights groups and lawmakers have been pressing both the Trump and Biden administrations to make the designation.
Shanghai Disneyland closes as virus rises, Shenzhen reopens (AP) Shanghai Disneyland closed Monday as China’s most populous city tried to contain its biggest coronavirus flareup in two years, while the southern business center of Shenzhen allowed shops and offices to reopen after a weeklong closure. Meanwhile, the cities of Changchun and Jilin in the northeast began another round of citywide virus testing following a surge in infections. Jilin tightened anti-disease curbs, ordering its 2 million residents to stay home. China’s case numbers in its latest infection wave are low compared with other major countries, but authorities are enforcing a “zero tolerance” strategy that has suspended access to some major cities.
China Eastern Airlines Boeing with 132 on board crashes in China (WSJ) A Boeing 737 operated by China Eastern Airlines carrying 132 people slammed into the mountains of southern China. Flight 5735 crashed in the Guangxi region while flying from the southwestern city of Kunming to the southern metropolis of Guangzhou. The aircraft was a 737-800, according to the Aviation Safety Network database, and not a Boeing 737 MAX, which has been under scrutiny since two separate crashes led to a protracted grounding. If all aboard are confirmed dead, this would be China’s deadliest crash in nearly 30 years.
Reaching out to a stranger (Washington Post) Over the weekend, the Washington Post brought us the delightful, if slightly disturbing, story of Shoji Morimoto, or Rental-san as he is known in his native Japan, the man his clients hire to do nothing. Morimoto has built a business and viral fame on the promise that he will show up when required and simply be: His jobs have included waiting at the end of a marathon so a runner could see a familiar face, to silently accompanying a recently divorced woman to lunch, to sitting nearby to prevent a student from slacking off from their studies. Morimoto feels he fills a niche as a social pressure release valve. “I think when people are feeling vulnerable or are in their intimate moments, they become more sensitive toward people that are close to them, like how they will be perceived, or the kind of actions they will take for them,” he said. “So I think they want to just reach out to a stranger without any strings attached.”
