Who Are You, Really?
Prompt: One day, you wake up as a human lie detector who is able to accurately tell when someone is lying. Your ability tells you that everything your best friend has told you, even their name, is a lie.
Characters: Reader x Kim Jongin
Genre: Angst
Word Count: 1538
________________________________
You fell, landing hard on your back. Up above you, there was some laughter from other children in the schoolyard. Your vision was going in and out, and you laid still to try and relieve the pain. You felt a hand on your shoulder, and your eyes tried to make out the face of your best friend, Kai.
Kai had been with you ever since that moment. You met him in middle school, and you also lived in the same apartment complex. You lived on the 4th floor, while Kai, lived on the 7th floor.
The two of you were inseparable, all the way from 6th grade to graduating high school, and the first two years of college. You went to the same school, the University of Korea. Kai’ s major was dancing and broadcasting, and yours was biology, with a minor in chemistry. Theoretically, your interests couldn’t be more different, but the two of you never considered that to be a problem.
At least, there was no problem until you woke up one day, in the middle of your sophomore year with a strange feeling gnawing at the back of your mind.
You got out of bed, uncertain about every item your eyes seemed to land on in your dorm room. You snuggled the pillow Kai gave you for your 11th birthday, you saw the slippers he gave you for Christmas last year, you put on your matching robe that the two of you have, even your reflection in the bathroom mirror as you brushed your teeth gave you a strange vibe.
For whatever reason, everything that reminded you of Kai, gave you this feeling. You went about your morning getting ready for your 10am class trying to come with an answer to this feeling.
King Kai [9:18AM] What’s up hooonnneeeyyyy?? Are we getting late breakfast before your lab?
Your stomach started to turn. You took a moment to gather yourself before replying.
Y/N [9:20AM] Sure thing, I’ll meet you in the Pit in 5 :)
You couldn’t shake this feeling as you swung your backpack over your shoulder, heading down the stairs and around the corner into the Pit.
Once you reached your destination, your eyes wandered around, taking in the environment. Everything that you could see made your mind at ease, the coffee shop, the vending machines, the countless chairs and desks..
You did a double-take when your eyes swept over Junmyeon trying to talk to a freshman in line at the coffee shop. Junmyeon was a total player, and he introduced himself as Suho to his victims. He had tried getting in your pants, but thank goodness Kai was there to keep him away.
He was the kind of person to say anything to get into a girls pants, and you focused in on him, practically hearing the honey-like words he was saying.
“Yeah, I‘m a sophomore here.” Lie, he was a junior. “I don‘t really have a lot of friends here, so I was hoping you would want to hang out with me.“ Another lie, he was one of the most popular guys at school. “I‘m not a big partier, so I don’t get out a lot.” Yet again, lie.
Your eyebrows furrowed. What was happening to you, you’ve never had anything similar to this happen to you before. Your gaze was attracted to the TV playing the news in the corner. The program also gave you a bad feeling, everything that was going on was lie, after lie, after lie. Unending lies, from Junmyeon, to the TV reporter, and to those things in your room.
You were lost in thought when you felt someone place their arm around your shoulders.
“There you are! What are you- ah, watching the reporter? She’s so ugly, I can‘t believe that the broadcasting station let her be on the air.“ Lie. But this time, you turned your head to meet Kai’s gaze.
His gaze felt wrong to you, but he had been looking at you like that for your entire friendship. Your eyebrows grew even closer and you shrugged his arm off of you.
He looked at you, with what you once would have thought was concern, but now that feels wrong too.
“Y/N, are you feeling okay? You look like you don‘t speak Korean anymore…“
You took a deep breath, “Yeah, I just feel completely wrong this morning.“ You looked into Kai’s eyes, “Actually, everything else seems off, not me.” You trailed off as you took in Kai‘s appearance.
He looked amazing for being up hours before his first class today, which gave you a strange vibe. But he had done this both years of college so far, and all throughout high school.
Your thoughts were starting to drown you, and you had to escape them somehow. You looked back to the TV, “I think I just need coffee or something.“
“Alright then, I know exactly what you need.“ You looked back at Kai’s face, that wasn’t a lie, but nevertheless, it gave you a horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach. An unshakeable feeling.
You allowed Kai to lead you both over to the coffee shop, and ordered for the two of you. You stared at the back of his head, as he talked to his partner for a project in his broadcasting class.
It felt, that even the relationship he had with his classmate wasn’t the complete truth. His classmate felt your eyes on him, and turned back to smile at you before returning to the conversation between him and Kai.
“Y/N, are you just dancing up in the clouds?” You turned to see Kai, and his classmate Chanyeol looking at you. Both gazes felt foreign, and in a way, almost hostile.
Your heart skipped a beat as they waited for your response.
You blinked, stumbling over your words, “I-sorry Chanyeol, I-I don’t think I‘m going to m-my lab.“ You backed away fast, and speed walked over to your residence hall.
Everything that’s given you such a horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach came into your mind all at once, and you broke down in the middle of your residence hall.
“Y/N!! Hey, Y/N, why are you- oh shit, come here.” You felt arms come around you and hold you tightly to the person they belong to. The gesture should have comforted you immensely, especially coming from Kai. But it made you want to vomit.
You pushed yourself out of his arms, stared him in his eyes as tears still continued to stream down your face. You sniffled and attempted to collect yourself enough to voice what was wrong.
“Tell me, right now, why you make me feel so awful all of a sudden.“ His eyes went wide and his mouth opened and closed not being able to answer. “Ever since I woke up this morning, everything that reminds me of you, has given me the most awful feeling I’ve ever had in my life. I could hear Junmyeon preying on  a freshman from across the Pit, and both you and Chanyeol made me want to run away and never look back.” You stabbed your finger into his chest with each sentence. Without authorizing your body, you began to cry again. “I hate this feeling, but I don‘t understand what‘s happening. You‘ve been my best friend for 12 years, and I don‘t understand what‘s happening to me. I just want you to be able to comfort me, but every time you look at me, or talk to me, or touch me, it makes me want to kick you in the face.“ You press against the wall, and slide your back down it, covering your face with your hands as your sobs wrack through your body.
Kai sighs, and your mood stays indifferent. “Let‘s go to your room. I‘ll try to explain.“
You nod slightly, and he allows you to get up on your own, and follows behind you as you lead him to your room.
Your sobs have subsided for the most part, but you still sniffle often. You throw yourself on your couch, as you hear Kai stand near the kitchen, not even 10 feet away from you. His presence still making you uncomfortable.
“To start at the beginning, my name isn‘t Kai.“
Your eyes snap open to look at him, arms folded against your counter.
“We didn‘t meet by accident on the playground in 6th grade. I didn‘t actually live two floors above you in your parent‘s apartment complex. And I don‘t attend this school.”
You continue to stare at him. The uneasy feeling is gone, but you still don’t feel good. He just told you that the most important relationship in your life has been a lie. Your rock, your best friend. Kai. Was all a lie.
“So then, what‘s your real name? And who are you, really?”
He sighs, “My real name is Kim Jongin.“ He pulls something out from behind his back. Once he pulls it in front of him, you recognize it to be a handgun, with a silencer on the end of it.
He points it at you.
“I‘m here to take care of you.”
Then, nothing. Just black.

Heya I was the recent anon thanking you for more Kai stories! ☺️ I mean... i don’t have or use tumblr so if you’d like to read what I have going on I’ll link it at the end of this. Is it garbage? Absolutely! 😂 but i hope to improve narrative-wise! I had ideas about readerxkai growing up together then the next day, I actually stumbled upon ATLUH for the first time. So it was so cool others have similar ideas! Anyway lol I’m FortReveuse20 over on AO3
I did not think it was garbage! I thoroughly enjoyed both stories to be perfectly honest, I like what you’re going for and I actually can’t wait to see what happens next. 😊

Act I: One |
“Tell me you feel nothing then. That me touching you is doing nothing.”
You skipped down the hallway humming to yourself as you made your way over to your tall boyfriend, Jongin. Your heart thumped lightly in your chest as you neared him. He was talking to one of his friends, Sehun who had become one of your friends when you guys were in Science class together during your first year of high school.
Sehun was tall, handsome, and hilarious. He was easily one of your best friends and inevitably through him, you became immersed in his group of friends which contained seven other very rowdy boys. You dragged your best friend Jae along with you and the ten of you became like a family.
It didn’t take long before you started to crush on one of your friends, Jongin who had a habit of making your heart stop in all the best ways. The two of you had started dating over summer break leading into your first semester of your second year of high school. Which now it was just barely September, making your and Jongin’s relationship still fresh but at the same time, you had known him long enough for things to be comfortable. While you had only been dating since mid-June, it still felt like a long time with someone like Jongin.
You stood up on your tippy toes, pressing your palms to Jongin’s eyes from behind as Sehun raised a thick eyebrow at you.
“Guess who?” you sang as your legs started to quiver from holding yourself up.
Jongin let out a laugh, “Could it be… Kyungsoo? Is that you my love?”
You rolled your eyes and smacked his eyes, sinking down to your feet. “You’re truly lucky to be dating me because if not, everyone would swear that you actually had something for Soo.”
Jongin held out his arms to you but you scoffed playfully, pushing yourself towards Sehun and wrapping your arms around his waist. Sehun laughed and ruffled your hair. “Y/N,” Jongin whined.
“No. I like Sehun better. He’s not gay for Soo the way you are and he gives me all his attention,” you pouted.
Sehun laughed, the vibration of his laugh shaking through you as you pressed yourself to him, “That’s right, Y/N. You will always get all my attention especially when Jongin leaves you for his true love.”
Jongin pulled at you scoffing and dragging you into his arms. You smiled at the familiar warmth and scent that belonged to Jongin. “You’re lucky you’re dating me or everyone would think you and Sehun had something going on,” he said looking down at you with narrowed eyebrows and a playful smile.
“Psh. Me and Y/N? Never. I’ve got a thing for Ms. Ahn.”
You cringed, “Are we thinking of the same Ms. Ahn?”
Sehun grinned, “If you’re thinking of the school nurse then yes, we’re thinking of the same person.”
Jongin pointed at Sehun, “Dude, that’s disgusting.”
“Hey now, don’t talk about the future Mrs. Oh like that,” Sehun said, biting back a laugh.
“Ew, Sehun. She’s nearly sixty,” you said, leaning your head against Jongin’s hard chest. You could feel every breath that he took and it comforted you in ways you couldn’t explain. You felt safe in his arms and you never wanted the leave the sanctuary that was Jongin. You wondered if he felt the same way about you. Even if you had only been together for a few months it managed to already feel like lifetimes. You knew each other well and instead of just being a couple, you were best friends too.
You heard a laugh booming down the hallway and you turned in Jongin’s hold, looking down the hallway to your lanky friend Chanyeol who was striding down the hall clumsily with Kyungsoo.
When they approached, you noticed someone trailing behind Chanyeol that you had never seen before. You adjusted yourself in Jongin’s hold more to see the new person.
You could hear Jongin’s heart pick up at the new person and it wasn’t long before he was removing himself from you and greeting the boy.
“Baekhyun! You didn’t tell me you were coming back today!” Jongin beamed as he stared at the boy. You stood awkwardly by yourself while Sehun too greeted the new boy, sharing the same excited look as Jongin, Chanyeol and Kyungsoo.
Who’s Baekhyun?
Sehun noticed you shifting your weight awkwardly and he pulled you to his side, gesturing to Baekhyun as you finally got a close look at the boy. Your breath caught in your throat. “Y/N, this is Baekhyun one of our childhood friends who we had been ripped apart from for a few years when he moved. Baekhyun, this is Y/N, our favorite toy in our group,” Jongin smacked Sehun’s head and Sehun let out a grunt.
“She’s my girlfriend,” Jongin said, putting an arm around you.
“Can you believe he’s finally given up on Kyungsoo?”
You could barely stay coherent in their conversation as your gaze was locked onto Baekhyun. His eyes stared back into yours as your heart beat roughly against your chest. He was handsome, yes, but something about him was making everything inside you come to life it seemed. There was an instant assault on your body when your eyes connected with his, butterflies erupted in your stomach, your pulse was hammering, and you could hardly breathe.
Why was he making you feel like this?
While you couldn’t be sure, it seemed like Baekhyun was feeling the same thing you were. His eyebrows were narrowed and his breath came out in ragged spurts.
It was as if time had stopped and the world and the people around the two of you had blurred.
At least that was until Jongin squeezed your shoulder and kissed your head. Automatically, you looked away from Baekhyun as you felt yourself pushing away from Jongin’s kiss and your heart started to clench in strange ways. Jongin gave you a look and you forced yourself closer to him, kissing his bicep gently before casting your gaze at your feet.
You couldn’t look back at Baekhyun after how intently you had been looking at him as now you felt embarrassed. Why had you looked at him like that? Why had you pulled away from Jongin?
You didn’t have all the answers but something in your mind clicked when you saw Baekhyun. Something felt different and while you didn’t know how, you knew things were going to change.
↠✿✿✿↞
Baekhyun was part of your group in no time and while it felt strange at first, you had to remind yourself that the boys and he had been friends since childhood – the only reason he wasn’t around for the first year and a half of high school was because his family had moved temporarily.
Jae warmed up to him quickly too and she and he were quickly good friends within the first two weeks of his arrival. You, on the other hand, were trying to keep your distance from him. Why? Well, you were unnaturally drawn to Baekhyun. You thought about him all the time, you couldn’t keep your eyes from finding his, and your heart jolted in excitement every time you had seen him.
It wasn’t normal.
You never reacted that way towards any other guy friend – or any guy in general except Jongin. But even with Jongin you didn’t react that way.
So, you were trying to keep your distance by attaching yourself further to Jongin. He didn’t seem to mind your sudden clinginess either and that made you feel that much more horrible. You really liked Jongin and he was your boyfriend, so why wasn’t he the only one on your mind?
Today you knew it was going to be rough because Jae, Jongin and Sehun were all home sick with the flu and they were your three safety nets from Baekhyun. It would be impossible to fully ignore Baekhyun today.
Speak of the devil as you were on your way to your second class of the day, Baekhyun found you with his bright smile and sparkling eyes. You felt immediately nervous.
“Hey, Y/N,” he said in a bright tone.
Your eyes shifted as you tried not to look at him, “Oh hey.”
Out of the corner of your eyes, you could see him trying to catch your gaze. “I haven't seen you around much lately.”
That’s because you’re avoiding him. "Oh, you know. Just been busy." You were chanting in your head for Baekhyun to leave you alone, so much so, that you slipped and said, "Please let Baekhyun leave me alone."
He eyed you carefully, "I'm standing right here," he said with fake offense.
Lifting your hands up you shook them, "I-"
"If you want me to leave you alone, just say so," his voice was gentle and serious. "If I bother you-"
You cut him off, shaking your head with your hands. "It's not that," he gave you a head tilt with his eyes narrowed. "You don't bother me, it's just that-" but before the words could come out you clasped your hand over your mouth. Did you really almost told him that he makes you nervous and that you can't keep your eyes off him?
Baekhyun slid closer to you, "It's just what?" He asked in a low voice. He was close – too close. You swore you could feel his every breath and his cologne was dancing with your senses in a way that was causing your head to feel light.
"Why is your face so flushed, Y/N?" You heard the annoyingly loud voice that belonged to Chanyeol call as he walked towards where you and Baekhyun were. You let out a shaky breath and moved away from Baekhyun and towards Chanyeol trying not to sputter out 'thank god, you saved me' to him.
But even with Chanyeol standing with the two of you, you still felt Baekhyun's eyes boring into the back of your head.
Chanyeol waved a hand in front of your face, "Y/N, why are you blushing?"
Shaking your head a few times you let out a nervous laugh, "Maybe I caught the flu from Jongin," you answered innocently.
Chanyeol dramatically cringed, "I don't even want to know how you caught it," he hollered.
While you and Chanyeol laughed, nothing came from Baekhyun and when you looked over at him he was staring at you and his gaze felt dangerous.
↠✿✿✿↞
October started off normal but there was something different in the air. While you didn't want to acknowledge it, you knew it had something to do with Baekhyun, the boy you wanted so desperately to avoid. After a month of knowing him, your heart still palpitated when he was around and you often forgot to breathe. What was it about him that did this to you?
Baekhyun appealed to you even though you wished he didn’t. You tried to avoid him but often deep in your thoughts you wondered what he was doing, thinking or where he was when he wasn’t around.
Thankfully, Jongin had yet to notice but you knew it was only a matter of time before he saw how you would try to avoid Baekhyun’s following eyes or how you tried to your best not to look at him the same way.
"Baekhyun and Y/N!" The teacher proclaimed and you tried not to pound your head on your desk. This is why things didn't feel right because your body somehow knew that Mr. Ross was going to pair you and Baekhyun for your month long partnered research assignment on classical music and its evolution. Why did it have to be partnered? Couldn't Mr. Ross just stick to traditional teaching? You groaned to yourself. He was one of the teachers who liked to promote work amongst peers and he preached about how important teamwork was – he was also notorious for pairing his classmates up with people they never talked to.
The worst part was that he encouraged outside of class work and it was almost necessary to get a good grade on your partner assignments for a month.
This was going to be the month you died. Yeah. This was it. You smiled bitterly as Baekhyun came to sit down next to you. "You look excited to see me."
You scoffed and turned away from him.
"What?" He whined. "You avoid me so much, am I that bad?"
You flashed your eyes over at him and glared because you knew he understood the meaning behind his words. He was bad. Bad for you because he made you look at him in ways you shouldn't. He made you feel things you shouldn't. You knew Baekhyun knew it all.
Baekhyun's irises shook as he looked at you. "Don't look at me like that," he whispered.
"I'm not looking at you any type of way," you defended and looked away.
He scoffed and grabbed your arm. The skin under his touch burned and you felt your whole body flush as you tried to ignore the way you wanted to lean into it. "You know exactly how you look at me," he said lowly causing your skin to crawl with excitement.
Before it was too late and you fell into the hole that was Baekhyun, you yanked your arm away from him. "This has to stop," you commanded.
"But we haven't even started."
Standing up quickly in your seat and raising your hand you said, "Mr. Ross, can I please go to the bathroom, I feel nauseous?"
↠✿✿✿↞
You were incredibly annoyed that you had been paired with Baekhyun for the project and at lunch that day, you couldn't keep the miserable look off your face. While your heart beat loudly at the thought of alone time with Baekhyun, your head told you to stop. Baekhyun was nothing to you. Baekhyun was nothing to you. Baekhyun was nothing -
"What's the grumpy face about, Y/N?" Sehun teased and pinched your cheeks.
You smacked his hand away and grimaced, "Hands off, boy."
Sehun rolled his eyes, "What is Jongin the only one allowed to touch you?"
"Yes, Sehun," Jongin said pulling you into his arms as Sehun stuck out his tongue from where he was next to you at the lunch table.
"I touched her long before you even knew her," Sehun teased.
"Woah, Sehun and Y/N hooked up?" Baekhyun asked loudly from where he was across from you and Jongin. The whole table froze under his question and Sehun cleared his throat and laughed nervously.
You looked around at your friends and they all looked down at their trays of food. To a point, you understood why everyone reacted the way they did but you wondered why everyone seemed so nervous about Baekhyun's question. It wasn't like you and Sehun had hooked up. You guys were just friends and while you had a crush on him the beginning of freshman year, you got over it when you met the other guys. "No," you answered sharply as a playful smirk played on his lips. "I am Jongin's and even if I wasn't, I wouldn't fuck around with anyone else in this group."
Minseok let out a shaky laugh, "That's harsh, darling."
"What's gotten into you today, Y/N? Normally, we make jokes like that all the time!" Chanyeol whined.
Junmyeon sighed, "Maybe she's just tired of it all."
Even though they were all chattering around you and out of their shocked state, you were focused on glaring at Baekhyun. For once it wasn't out of intrigue but more of a challenge. You wanted Baekhyun to know his words and actions weren't affecting you but by the way he looked at you, you knew that wasn't the case. Baekhyun gave you a smirk as if he didn't believe you.
↠✿✿✿↞
"Do you have something against Baekhyun?" Jongin asked that night when the two of you were cuddling on your bed and watching a movie.
You avoided eye contact and focused on the horror movie in front of you. "No," you scoffed. "Of course not."
"It's okay if you do," Jongin said pattering his fingers on the bare skin of your side where your shirt had ridden up. "He's pretty annoying at times."
Goosebumps crawled over your skin from Jongin's touch and you trembled. You went to respond to what Jongin said, but before you could do so, your phone lights up and when you see the name you groan to yourself and shield the phone from Jongin.
From: Baekhyun
So, partner when do you want to get together and work on our project.
Received 7:29pm
To: Baekhyun
How about never?
Sent 7:31pm
"Babe?" Jongin said lightly as he pressed a soft kiss on your cheek. You looked back at him and gave him a smile.
"Yeah?"
"You can dislike whoever you want, all that matters it that you like me," he said with the corners of his mouth lifted.
It felt as if your heart dropped into your stomach and your throat closed up. You still liked him, right? You shoved your phone off your bed and turned your whole body towards Jongin. He circled his arms around your waist and pulled you into him. Your hands shook as you pressed your palms to his soft cheeks and your lips pressed to his.
You swore you could still feel the faintest of butterflies in your stomach but his kiss wasn't sending the thrill through you that you swore it used to. The sparks you had with Jongin were seeming to fade and no matter how hard you pushed into him and kissed him, they weren't anywhere to be found.
↠✿✿✿↞
There was only so long you could ignore Byun Baekhyun and you found out that the exact time it took before he did something about it. A week. You had ignored him a week, forsake your grade, and spent your free time locking lips with Jongin.
It wasn't easy to stay out of his sight and line of conversation but with the help of Jongin, you managed. Being all over Jongin had major advantages – not only was his embrace warm and comforting but he was also a good kisser despite the lack of sparks and butterflies. Baekhyun's eyes were always on you when you were around but being wrapped up in Jongin stopped any conversation from forming.
Ignoring him in class was easy since you had spent three of the class periods in the nurse's office throughout the week and then the other two catching up on what you missed.
Unfortunately, it came to an end when Jongin was on a science class field trip.
Before school that day, Baekhyun had found you, grabbed your arm, and pulled you off into a no longer used stairwell. You groaned when your friends hadn't even noticed him dragging you off.
"How long do you plan on ignoring me?" He asked sharply as he gripped your arm.
You rolled your eyes as you tried to ignore how good he looked in the sweatpants he wore today. "As long as necessary," you spat out without thinking.
His eyebrows raised, "Necessary?"
"I just don't like you," you lied as you pulled your arm from his grip and crossed your arms over your chest.
Baekhyun gives you a look. "When you said as long as necessary, there are words that follow that, aren’t there?"
You look at the wall and focus your blazing stare at some graffiti on the wall.
"You say you don't like me, but I think you're ignoring me because you like me too much."
Before you can think, you snap your gaze back over to him and push him roughly. Baekhyun stumbled back into the wall and as you try to move your hands off his chest, he grabbed your wrists and held them there. "Let go of me," you growled but your tone isn't as sharp as you wanted it to be. You couldn't deny to yourself that you liked having your hands on Baekhyun but you knew it was wrong. Jongin was the one you should be thinking of and the fact that you had some sort of fucked up feelings towards Baekhyun was making you disgusted with yourself.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
You paused for a moment and a sly smile pulled across his features."Yes, I'm sure!" You yelled a few seconds too late. Baekhyun knew better. You knew better. You wanted Baekhyun more every day and it was becoming dangerous.
But Baekhyun backed off and he let go of your hands. It took you too long to drop your hands and before you could walk off, Baekhyun grabbed one of your wrists once more and looked at you softer than normal. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "it's so hard to keep my cool around you. Especially when you've been extra affectionate with Jongin lately." You gasped at his words. The conversation never went this far before and it made everything inside you feel wrong and right all at the same time.
Was Baekhyun basically confessing to having some type of feelings for you?
"It's so hard to be good," he admitted softly.
You shake your head a few times and pull away from the burn of his touch once again.
As you go to leave, Baekhyun's voice stopped you. "We need to work on our project," his voice was strained but your back was turned to him so you couldn't tell why or what emotions were showing on his face. "I'll be good. I really need a good grade this semester. Can we work on it tonight?"
With a nod, you left Baekhyun in the stairwell as you tried to keep your shaking knees from collapsing.
You don't get a moment to breathe as Sehun wrapped an arm around your shoulders and gave you a funny look, "Where did you run off to, my little sunshine?" Just then, Baekhyun comes from the stairwell and Sehun looks between the two of you. An emotion passed over his expression too fast for you to catch it as he shook his head and pulled you down the hallway.
↠✿✿✿↞
The night started off decent. When Baekhyun came to your house, his expression wasn't playful and mischievous but instead, serious. The two of you worked in the dining room, being sure to keep a two chair distance in between you since your parents weren't home and you didn't trust Baekhyun.
You had told Jongin that you would be working with Baekhyun at your house tonight but he didn't seem fazed, worried, or jealous. Jongin was always so cool about everything even when it came to trusting his guy friend around you – but little did he know that he shouldn't trust Baekhyun because you sure as hell didn't. You weren't sure if you even trusted yourself as sick as that made you feel.
"Beethoven was really boring," Baekhyun said with a groan.
You sent a glare his way, "How could you say that?"
Baekhyun waved his hand in the air, "We don't need to learn about these old dead guys."
"You really are something, Byun Baekhyun," you looked back down at the books in front of you and you tried to get your eyes to take the text in so that way your brain could process the words but it wasn't working. You were thinking about Baekhyun again. Baekhyun's face, his hands, his neck, everything Baekhyun. Why couldn't it have been thoughts of Jongin? Those were normal and acceptable but no, you couldn't be normal. Without thinking you smacked your hands against the textbook and you saw Baekhyun jump in your peripherals.
He placed a hand over his heart, "Damn, are you trying to give me a heart attack?"
His expression was too sweet, too puppy like when you looked over at him and it just made you angrier. God damn Baekhyun and his ability to look so damn cute.
"What did you say?" He asked.
With a raised eyebrow you said, "I didn't say anything. But what I wanted to say is, yes Baekhyun, I want to give you a heart attack. Then I can work on this project about old dead guys alone and probably get a better grade on it than I will with your help."
Baekhyun snickered.
"What? What's so funny?"
It was getting harder for him to suppress his giggles as his eyes scrunched up. “Are you playing dumb?”
You were offended, “Why would I do that?”
“You said, ‘God damn Baekhyun and his ability to look so cute’,” he imitated your voice the best he could.
A lump formed in your throat. You swore you had just thought it but you had done worse. You fucked up big time and Baekhyun would never let you live it down.
Baekhyun was making your sanity waver but you tried the best you could to finish the night out of researching for your project together. Thankfully, Baekhyun did just as he said and he was “good”.
↠✿✿✿↞
A few days into working with Baekhyun at your house things started to go amiss. Being in your room alone with him was a stupid decision and this proved so when he accidentally rested his hand on your thigh.
Coherent thoughts couldn’t even form in your mind with his hand on the bare skin of your thigh and it made you regret the shorts you wore. You shook under his touch and you swore Baekhyun’s hand trembled. The worst part? You didn’t even tell him to move his hand until your eyes landed on a picture of you and Jongin on your nightstand.
You all but flew away from Baekhyun and you decided to sit on the floor by your bedroom door as Baekhyun sat on your bed. You felt like you had just cheated on Jongin but you tried to calm yourself by remembering that the other guys in the group touched you platonically often. This was platonic and nothing more, you tried to tell yourself but by the way the two of you stared each other down from across the room, you weren't fooling anyone.
Jongin didn’t deserve this.
Even with the lack of butterflies and sparks from Jongin, you told yourself they'd come back. You cared so much about Jongin and you so badly wanted to be with him – didn’t you?
Baekhyun needed to leave. He needed to go straight back to wherever the hell he came from because he was complicating the things that were once so clear. Before he showed up, you thought you were falling in love with Jongin but now, you didn’t know what to think.
From where you were, you whispered to Baekhyun “You ruined everything,” and even though you could barely hear the words yourself, you knew Baekhyun could hear them from the conflicted expression that spread out over his features.
You blamed Baekhyun – but was it really his fault? Baekhyun's feelings wouldn't have mattered if you had been loving and caring about Jongin the way you should have been.
↠✿✿✿↞
"I can't wait to get my girlfriend back at the end of this month," Jongin joked the second week of October while your group of friends were having lunch together. Today your best friend Jae was next to you and you were leaning on her shoulder as Jongin held your hand and ran his fingers over your knuckles.
Baekhyun's gaze shot to you but you kept your eyes on the hole in Jae's jeans that showed her knee.
"You won't get her back even then, Jongin. I haven't had her attention in so long," Jae whined.
Sehun snorted, "You're telling me. She was my friend first," he pointed at everyone around the table and you watched the way his raised hand lingered on Baekhyun.
Jongdae laughed, "Raise your hand if you get tired of hearing Sehun talk and whine about everything."
A laugh escaped your lips and you raised your hand, watching as the whole table does so and Sehun stared at you in shock. "How dare you betray me like this?" Sehun said to you with a look of disbelief on his face. "I don't deserve this disrespect."
You were smiling until your eyes met Baekhyun's intense gaze and your face dropped. Jae ran her fingers through your hair and leaned down to you, "What's wrong?"
Through the whole duration of Baekhyun's six weeks here, you had yet to tell your only girl best friend everything that you had been dealing with Baekhyun. It wasn't that you didn't trust her but you had a fear of saying the words out loud because once you did so, it confirmed that whatever was happening between the two of you, was really happening. Although you were afraid that if you didn't tell someone soon, that something could slip up and you could make a mistake you would never forgive yourself for. The most important thing to you was making sure you didn't hurt Jongin. Besides being your boyfriend, he was one of your best friends.
"Something's up, Y/N. Talk to me," she whispered.
You shook your head, "I can't tell you here. Come over after school?"
She gave your hair a ruffle, "Of course."
Somehow you managed to get through the day even though Baekhyun's stares were getting more fierce as time passed. Once you got home, you breathed a sigh of relief and Jae yanked you upstairs to your bedroom.
"Speak," She instructed.
Letting out a breath, you looked at your best friend, "You can't tell any of the guys. Especially Jongin."
"Okay, I'm offended. Why would I tell any of those assholes? Y/N, it's been me and you against the world since we were in elementary school. I'm not even nearly as close to them as you are," she pointed at you.
Jae was right. You were more close to the group of rowdy boys than she would ever be. She had other friends outside the group and she stuck around other girls but the boys were like your family and you felt more comfortable with them. She was your best friend but that didn't mean you both had to be close to the same people. Sometimes she didn't understand how you managed to be around the boys so often because at some point she would get irritated and have to take a break.
You never needed a break until Baekhyun had started to come around.
"It's Baekhyun," you slowly started.
She spun her hand a few times, cueing for you to go on.
"I-I... I think... I'm developing feelings for him."
Jae's mouth was agape as she stared at you. "I knew it," she said to herself.
You furrowed your brows, "Jae," you whined.
Shaking her head she said, "I'm sorry, go on."
"I don’t know what it is but since the moment I first met him, I can't keep my eyes off him and I know it's the same for him. I get chills and my heart feels like it's going to break through my chest. It feels so wrong and so right..." You continued talking, telling Jae all the instances you and Baekhyun shared. They way he would touch you, the things he said to you, and the way he looked at you. You tried not to leave any of the moments out because you realized you had kept it all so pent up for so long.
While telling Jae about the incidents with Baekhyun, they sounded so trivial out loud but inside your head, the incidents seemed more impactful.
Jae listened to everything carefully and you couldn't help but notice the way her face contorted and it made your heart press roughly against your rib cage. When you finished talking, she let out a breath. "What are you going to do?"
You looked down at your hands that were shaking in your lap, "I don't know. I care about Jongin so much but I feel like I’m cheating by not telling him."
"You have to tell him, Y/N. If you loved Jongin, you wouldn't be getting feelings for someone else." Jae's words were harsh but they were true. If you cared about Jongin whole-heartidly the way you thought you did, you wouldn't have been doubting your relationship and you sure as hell wouldn't be looking at Baekhyun the way you did.
Tears dripped down your cheeks as Jae wrapped her arms around you, "It's Jongin though. He's so kind hearted and good to me."
"He is a great guy, but just because he's great does that make him right for you? Staying with Jongin when your feelings are wavering is only going to hurt the both of you in the long run. It's not healthy."
Looking at the picture on your nightstand, your heart felt heavy and your throat was constricted. It was a happier time when you and Jongin had just started dating. Things were fluffy, happy, and you swore you had a skip in your step. Jongin had made you the happiest girl in the world at the time but now it seemed it wasn't enough and the guilt that had began to hang over you was getting too heavy to bare. "I don't want to hurt him," you choked out. "Over some stupid boy." Hurting Jongin would surely kill you and whatever this thing with Baekhyun was, didn't seem worth it – but you knew that how Baekhyun made you feel wasn't innocent and Jongin deserved to know.
Jae rocked you in her arms as you sobbed, "You never know, Baekhyun could be the love of your life. The way he makes you feel is how Jongin should make you feel and you can't help it if Jongin doesn't make you feel that way anymore – and neither can he. Sometimes these things are bigger than us and we have to accept it. We can't control our fate and we surely can't control who we like or even love. It just happens and when it does, there is no fault, right or wrong, black and white. Love and fate make everything blurred at the edges."
↠✿✿✿↞
It was Friday night and your group was out bowling together. Normally, you looked forward to these nights but now that Baekhyun was around, you didn't want to be involved in any group outings. The bit of you that did want to be involved you were certain was ill. Being excited to see Baekhyun was a disease and you wanted so badly to be rid of it.
With Jongin's arms wrapped around your waist, it was easy to pretend that everything was okay – even when it wasn't. Three sets of eyes were on you as Jongin held you. Jae, Baekhyun and Sehun. Sehun knew you too well for his own good and while he hadn't said anything, you knew that he suspected that something was going on. Sooner or later the truth would have to come out.
But what if you left the group in pieces? What if Jongin got upset at Baekhyun? Was Baekhyun worth possibly ruining your friendship amongst the group?
It was then you decided that you would lie. Or not so much lie as it was avoid the full truth. Telling Jongin that you had started to lose feelings for him instead of telling him you started to get feelings for Baekhyun seemed easier – less painful but as you thought about it, you hated yourself. You hated yourself for your feelings and for your lack of faithfulness for Jongin. People break up all the time for various reasons – but you and Jongin didn't have any problems in the relationship other than your feelings for Baekhyun. And typically when people break up, it's not because they're interested in a friend.
"You're so cute when you're deep in thought," Jongin whispered into your ear sending chills down your spine. You leaned back into him more as you tried to press your ear to his chest. Faintly, you could hear his heart pounded against his chest and it made your blood run cold. It sounded just the way yours felt when Baekhyun was around. "What's wrong? What's the frown about?"
You shook your head, "It's nothing-" but before you could say anymore it was Jongin's turn to bowl and he pressed a sweet kiss to your temple. You watched him walk towards the lane and he picked up a bright purple ball. No matter what Jongin did, he always managed to look elegant and you couldn't help but smile. Regardless of what your feelings for him were, he was one of your best friends at the end of the day.
Caught up in staring at Jongin, you didn't realize Sehun's presence next to you until he smacked a large hand down on your shoulder. "You're going to have to tell me eventually."
You sent him a glare.
"Uh-uh. Being cute doesn't give you a free pass. I know you better than any of these sluts in this group – that's including Jae."
It was amazing how he did know you so well considering how long you had known Jae but in your heart you knew there was something special about your and Sehun's relationship. You often regarded Sehun as your best friend soul mate. "Sehun..."
He rubbed his hand on your shoulder, "Come on butter cup, let it out."
"Not here," you insisted.
He shrugged, "Hey Jongin, I'm stealing your girlfriend for like five minutes. Think you can survive?" He yelled to Jongin.
Jongin flashed you both a smile, "Go, go on. Who am I to stop girl time?"
Sehun snorted and sent Jongin his middle finger as he grabbed you by the hand and pulled you out of the bowling alley. It was dark outside and the air was humid as you and Sehun leaned up against the side of the building. "Alright spill. You've been acting wacko for too long. What's going on with you and Baek?"
"W-what?" You stuttered out.
He raised a thick brow, "I asked you what is going on with you and Baek."
"Nothing," you defended.
"Nothing as in nothing or nothing as in currently nothing is going on and you wish it was."
When you said nothing Sehun scoffed.
"Listen, I see the way you guys look at each other. It's so fucking obvious that you want to jump each other's bones so either break up with Jongin and fuck Baekhyun or get over it."
You stared at him in shock as he just shrugged. Sehun wasn't one to sugar coat things, even to you his best friend. "But-"
"The sexual tension is disgusting," he said crossing his arms over his chest and looking down at you.
"Is everything that simplistic in Sehun world?" You sneered.
He rolled his eyes, "Everything is simple, Y/N. Don't make it hard. I got your back – hell, we all do. If shit isn't working for you and Jongin why prolong it?"
You pointed at him, "You and Jae are a lot alike in the weirdest ways."
With a gasp, he pressed his hand against his chest, "You told her about Baekhyun before you told me?"
"You clearly already know."
Sehun moved his hand and grabbed yours again, "Seriously. Do you have feelings for Baekhyun?"
You sighed. "I think so but I hate him so much at the same time."
"Why?"
"Because he makes me feel this way. He makes me feel like forsaking everything with Jongin and I've barely talked to the guy."
Sehun squeezed your hand. "We're only in high school, in fact, we’ve barely turned sixteen... nobody expects you to stay in the first serious relationship you have. You guys aren't married, Y/N. Although you need to be honest with him, you don't need to force yourself to stay in a relationship you aren't happy with. Even if Baekhyun is just a passing cloud in your life that still doesn't mean you and Jongin are meant to be."
You smiled up at your best friend even though you weren't happy at all. You wanted to cry, scream, and break everything in sight but in that moment with Sehun, you realized what a good friend he was. "That was poetic, Hun."
"Seriously, you need to do what makes you happy."
Looking up at Sehun, you saw his handsome features shining in the early moonlight. "It's not that easy. I have to think of the group. This could tear us apart."
Sehun pulled you into his arms and wrapped his arms around your waist gently. He pressed his chin to the top of your head. "That won't happen, Y/N. We all love you so much and just want the best for you."
If only the two of you knew what fate had in store for you.
↠✿✿✿↞
The third week passed by without much incident. Baekhyun and you played nice together while trying to finish up the final parts of your assignment while you tried your best to tell Jongin about your feelings. Every time you were up to the task though, Jongin would be sweet and everything would come crashing down around you. How could you manage to break up with Jongin when he was the way he was?
The day was going well and Baekhyun and you had managed to work together in complete silence. While it was awkward, you found it was good to think even though when Baekhyun was around, all your mind would do is overflow with thoughts of him. The time to break up with Jongin was coming and it couldn't be any more heart wrenching to think about. So instead, Baekhyun's face painted your thoughts.
"Are we done yet?" Baekhyun groaned after an hour of silence between the two of you writing out an elaborate timeline.
You glanced over at him and his piercing gaze was heavy on you, his eyes following you at what seemed like their own accord."Hell, I hope so. I can't wait until I don't have to see your face and have you in my house several times a week."
Baekhyun laughed loudly and threw down his marker, "That's the biggest lie you've told yet."
You pulled your head back, "Excuse me?"
"You love being around me," he said with a confident smirk.
"Oh ho ho ho," you laughed out with sarcasm, "you don't know how much I loathe you at this point? I haven't made it clear," but even you could hear the tremble of uncertainty in your voice.
He leaned in close, "Actually, you've made it clear that you have something going on inside here that involves me." He pressed a finger to your forehead and pursed his lips. "I know you like me," he whispered and you felt like ice had just been dropped down your shirt.
It took a moment but you were able to scoot away from him even though Baekhyun's proximity was intoxicating. "That's c-crap."
But Baekhyun moved closer again, sliding himself across the wooden floor in your room to be almost pressed against your side. "But I like you too."
You tried your best to shrug off the chills. "You don't even know me," while you were attempting to sound confident, you knew it wasn't very convincing.
"I know enough."
"I have a boyfriend," you countered. Yes, a boyfriend you weren't even taking into consideration when you stared at Baekhyun.
Baekhyun's eyes dropped. "You remind me of that often enough I think."
"Then why haven't you taken a hint?"
He laughed bitterly, "I would have if you weren't interested in me. But you are."
As you tried to move away again, Baekhyun pressed a hand to your shoulder, "I'm not. You're a complete asshole."
For once he didn't have a witty comeback and he just sighed, "I know. I'm sorry. I'm not usually like this... you just bring out the bad guy in me. I want nothing more than to take you from Jongin and you have no idea how hard it is to fight," his eyes flashed over to yours and he pointed a shaking hand at you, "especially when you look at me like that."
"Baekhyun," you warned.
"Am I not allowed to speak my feelings? I've been shutting them up for so long."
You looked away, "I don't know, Baekhyun. I've know Jongin for much longer than I've known you and he's one of my best friends. What do you and I have in common? We really don't know enough about each other." The words you said out loud chilled you to your bones. You really didn't know Baekhyun so it didn't make sense that you were willing to leave Jongin for him. So why were you? Baekhyun and you barely said any sentences of meaning to each other even while working on a project with each other for three weeks.
"You don't give me enough credit," Baekhyun whined and you couldn't help but think it was cute. He grabbed your chin between his thumb and forefinger and pulled your gaze back to his. "I know so much more than you think. Like the way you shift your weight when your nervous," he said pointing his chin down at your feet to the way you were doing it now. "You like writing but you're afriad to tell anyone because you think they'll think it's a waste of time," his free hand pointed to the stack of notebooks by your bed, "You're happier when it rains because it calms you down when you’re stressed about all the college level classes you take." You can't take your eyes off Baekhyun as he continued to speak, "You're always tired because you have insomnia and even though you're prescribed medication, you don't take it – no matter how much your mom nags you to. And you also don't take your medication for the anxiety that is constantly gnawing at you and causing you to over think – because your grandmother was addicted to her anxiety medication."
Baekhyun continued, "I see what the others don't because I am always paying attention to you. I know what makes you tick and I see what you try to hide from Jongin and the others... but you can't hide it from me. I also see the side that you show to the guys and Jae, even if you don't show me often. Your warmth, never-ending affection, and how you put all of them before yourself. The way you look at Sehun like he is one of the most important people in your life, the way Chanyeol annoys you but he still brings a smile to your face, and the way you protect Junmyeon even though he tries to protect you. I haven't been around much longer than about two months but I feel like I know all about you and even then so, I want more."
Words couldn't form on your lips as you stared at Baekhyun. You were shocked. How did he find all of that out about you? Had you really been that much of an open book when he was around? Baekhyun had seen things that even Sehun your best friend who knew it all and saw it all, didn't see or know. He knew the things you hid from Jongin and things you even tried to hide from yourself.
You were in shock and all you wanted to do was press your lips to Baekhyun's. But you couldn't because you had to be loyal to Jongin. Maybe you hadn't been very loyal lately, but the least you could do is respect the relationship you had enough not to put hands – or lips, on someone else while still technically with him.
Baekhyun biting his lip and his shaking irises were making it hard on you but eventually, you pushed his hand off you. "Baekhyun," you said gently. "I never realized you had picked up on so much. It makes me feel bad about not noticing much about you."
He smiled, "You have noticed things about me, go ahead. Think."
For a moment you paused but then words came tumbling out your lips, "Sometimes when you're excited or maybe nervous, your irises shake back and forth when you look at me. You’re touchy-feely and like to be embraced by others." Baekhyun's smile grew. "While you joke and act disinterested in academics, you're actually really interested and smart when you apply yourself. You've come off as an asshole to me but I can see in your eyes how sweet you really can be... and you love Chanyeol a lot." Your face dropped. "You're loyal to your friends and you feel really bad about having feelings for me since Jongin is one of your best friends. I don't know as much about you as you know about me," you finished with a sigh.
"That's just because you haven't accepted your feelings for me completely. Once you do, your little world to Baekhyun will open up wide."
"But Jongin..."
"Do you love him?" Baekhyun asked.
You shook your head. "I love him as a best friend but we've only been together a short time.”
Baekhyun shrugged, "The world would be a fucked up place if we had to stay with the person we were with just because we liked them as friends. What does your heart tell you?"
"That I don't want to hurt Jongin," you easily said.
He let out a slow breath, "But who do you want?"
"Baek-"
"Who do you want?"
"I can add stubborn to my list of things I know about you."
He ignored you. "I'll make this easy. I want you, do you want me?"
You involuntarily nodded and you felt your heart crush in your chest. There was no going back now.
"I never thought I'd say these words in my entire life," Baekhyun said slowly, each word coming out fully enunciated, "but break up with Jongin."

a/n: hey guys! I’m so happy to finally get this out here. It took a lot of work and trial and error for me to figure out how to go about this but I finally did it! As you can see, the setup is different than the sequel and some of the details may not completely line up but I’m working to make sure it all flows well together! I hope you like how it’s done this time around! Also if the grammar is a bit off, you must know that as I was editing I seemed to be forgetting English - despite it being my first language. Wtf?
Of course, be sure to read the sequel first if you would like and there is the link at the top of this post. Thank you to @baektobyun and @mirkwoodroyalty and all of my followers for the support and love of this prequel! I hope it was worth the wait and that you enjoy it.
Since I have a lot on my plate currently this series will be posted once every two weeks on Thursdays (central time)!

Engraved, in mind and skin (exo mafia!au) (on Wattpad)
EXO is a club downtown, popular under the teens with a little bit of money to throw out. Stories about the underground club run like fire. Not everybody is just allowed to come and go there. But you are, you're a regular. For only one simple reason. You're their tattoo artist.
All nine of them are regular customers of yours alike. You know the ink on their skin like the back of your hands, because it was your hands that put it there. Etching fine lines onto miles of scarred skin as they trusted you with the little things that bothered them. Xiumin, their boss had trusted you with an unlimited access pass in return of you're work. Not all of them knew however, that you were aware of the things that go on in their building during the day. During the nights when the warehouse is empty of sweaty bodies and the pounding bass of the music. That they're one of the most feared mafia groups out there today. You're completely aware of the things they do when you pierce their skin with a pin, to insert a new piercing. Aware of the danger you've brought into your home. They're all special in their own way, a delight to work with. But one of them is special, there's something different about the way his skin feels beneath your fingers as it vibrates with the drill of the needle. Or the way his muscles tense when you pierce him. The soft grunts leaving his lips. Yeah, D.O. was definitely your favourite to work with.
Masterpost AU: Mafia Tag: Action, Angst, Smut, Reader Insert
Pairing: ReaderXKyungsoo/Do (main) , ReaderXChen , ReaderXKai
 Characters: Reader, OT9, Minor OC's.
Warnings: Blood, Death, Violence, Drug use, (Smut tags in smut part cuz surprise ;) ), Needles (oh god), abuse, torture ,
Exo members might come of as cruel towards outsiders in this, but that's part of the AU. I do not think EXO would ever be like this in any way.

Act I: One | Two
He let out a slow breath, "But who do you want?"
It was Tuesday and hell was going to have to freeze over for you to go to school. Actually, you were trying to find a place to hide that wasn't your house or school because this wasn't going to cut it. Baekhyun had told you yesterday to break up with Jongin and you were stuck in shock from the moment the words fell from his mouth. You didn't even move when Baekhyun brushed his hand across your cheek and nearly kissed you – but even Baekhyun had boundaries and instead he had left before his lips could touch yours. He left you with confusion and frustration.
You wanted him to kiss you in that moment. You wanted him to kiss you so bad that it hurt and by the look on his face when he left, he knew you wanted it too.
So yeah, there was no way you could face Baekhyun now nor could you face your oblivious and sweet boyfriend.
Baekhyun would undoubtedly show up at your house after school if you didn't go to school and you didn't want to risk it. Initially, you were going to go to Jae's house but her parents were strict and wouldn't let her skip school, let alone you. Besides, you knew Jae was going to be firm with you about facing Baekhyun and Jongin and that was the last thing you wanted to do.
That left you with Sehun. Okay, so he would nag you the same way Jae would but at least his parents were never home and Sehun wouldn't pass an opportunity to skip class.
He was going to give you major shit for avoiding Baekhyun and Jongin but he was your best friend.
"Sehun," you whined into your phone.
"Mm," he hummed groggily, undoubtedly he just woke up because Sehun knew nothing about going to school on time.
"Want to skip school with me today?"
That must have perked him up because you heard sheets ruffling, "Why didn't you start with that?" His deep voice was laced with sleep still. "Are you sick? Do you want me to come to you?"
You shook your head even though he couldn't see it, "No," you said too quickly.
"Why are you avoiding school?" He asked skeptically. "You barely skip school."
You scrunched your face up at being caught. "No reason."
He sighed, "Get your ass over here and whenever you get here, you're going to explain why you're skipping school."
↠✿✿✿↞
"You're a real good host," you said pointing at Sehun's sprawled out for on his bed. "You didn't even answer the door for me."
Sehun scoffed, "Why would I? You know how to turn a doorknob."
Shutting his bedroom door, you crossed your arms over your chest and stared at your barely awake best friend. He opened his arms and waved them at you a few times.
"Come cuddle with me," he whined.
You rolled your eyes, "Why do you deserve cuddles when you couldn't even open the door?"
He jutted out his bottom lip, "You're a terrible best friend."
"Touche," you said as you walked over to his bed and crawled into his arms. Sehun smiled and hugged you against his chest.
"So what's going on?"
"I don't want to face it," you mumbled into him. "I don't want to deal with Baekhyun or Jongin. That's why I needed a safe house. I would have gone to Jae... but her parents are strict and well, nobody is like my Sehun."
He let out a slow breath and rubbed his hands on your back, "I’ll ask this again: do you love Jongin?"
You hesitated.
"If you can't say you love him instantly, then you don't. When you love someone, you won't have to think about it."
"I love him as a friend though," you added.
Sehun shrugged, "You don't need to love Jongin, Y/N. You know that. People break up all of the time, just be honest with him. You owe it to him and all of us to be honest."
"Can't you do it for me?" You muttered.
Sehun laughed lightly, "You know I'd do anything for you, but this is one thing I can't. I wish I could. All I have to say is that when you break up with Jongin, don't jump right into Baekhyun. Give yourself some time to figure things out. Baekhyun can be... overwhelming."
"When I break up with Jongin?" you asked wondering why he hadn’t said ‘if’. Part of you wasn’t entirely sure you still wanted to.
"Let's just face it as it is. You are breaking up with Jongin. Own up to it, get comfortable with it. Honestly? I didn't see you and Jongin in it for the long run."
You gasped, "But you encouraged it!"
He snuggled his chin on top of your head, "That's because I could see that you liked him and I just wanted your happiness."
"Sehunnie," you cooed as you reached your hands up to his head and you patted his head. "You're a good friend."
Sehun let out a snort and pushed your hands off his head, "As a good friend I will tell you, go break up with your boyfriend today."
↠✿✿✿↞
You couldn't imagine that there was a better way to spend skipping school than with your best friend.
Most of the day, you and Sehun had spent cuddled up in his bed watching movies on silent and making up your own lines for them – which was one of your and Sehun's favorite things to do together. Sehun couldn't help but throw in a few situation fitting lines about how it's okay to have a breakup and that you should never stay with someone that you weren't all in for – much to your annoyance.
"Did you let Jongin know you were skipping out on school?" Sehun said as the two of you made lunch.
You nodded slowly. "Yeah, I told him I didn't feel well. He insisted on staying home with me but I told him that you were sick too and I was going to your house. He was really sweet and worried about me," your voice wavered, giving away your distaste for the idea of breaking up with him.
Sehun let out an exaggerated groan, "I love the guy but you two haven't been together long. Seriously. A relationship between us would be more meaningful than the one you have with Jongin."
Immediately, you froze and you looked away from Sehun. Something inside you fluttered and you tried to push it away.
He cleared his throat awkwardly, "I didn't mean anything by it."
And while you wanted to trust his words, it felt like he had meant something by it and you really didn't want to take it the way you were. "I'm just going to have a hard time breaking up with him since he's so good to me," you said trying to change the subject.
Sehun grabbed your shoulder, "I'm good to you too, aren't I?"
His gaze was heavy and it made you nervous. "Yes, you're the best."
"But just because I'm good to you, doesn't mean we have to date or try to be together."
The sentence made you think about everything from the beginning and the crush that you once had on Sehun. If you hadn't gone out with Jongin would you have still liked Sehun? Would you have tried dating each other? Would you be leaving him the way you were leaving Jongin?
None of those questions did you have the answer to but you did know you loved Sehun as your best friend and regardless of what happened, he would have a special place in your heart. He was different than Jae and even though you had been friends with her longer, Sehun was the one you knew you were meant to be best friends with.
He knew so much about you in such a short time and he always amazed you with his loyalty to you over his childhood friends. It made you wonder if this friendship went deeper than that for him the way it once had for you.
You couldn’t help but think that if he had, maybe it was too late.
But then again, Sehun was always special to you and sometimes in ways you couldn’t even put words to.
↠✿✿✿↞
Tuesday passed without a hitch and you easily deflected both Baekhyun and Jongin but when you woke up Wednesday morning in your bed and your parents weren't home, you decided to stay home from school again.
There was no way Sehun would let you miss another day of school, so this time you did it without telling anyone but Jongin.
It had gone well until Sehun showed up at your house when school ended. He had caught you lounging in your living room watching reality TV as you tried to play sick.
"You look healthy to me," he spat with his arms crossed over his chest.
You forced a fake cough and tried to make your voice raspy, "I'm not, can't you see?"
With a snort, Sehun snatched the remote from your hand and pointed it at you, "Why do you always underestimate my best friend skills? I can sense when you're bullshitting me a mile away."
Desperately, you grabbed at his hands, "I can’t do it, hunnie. I really can't. How about you run away with me? I'm thinking of changing my name to something cool like Luna and moving to a different country. My problem would be solved then."
Sehun rolled his eyes and slapped your hands away, "You're breaking up with Jongin."
You stared at him.
"Say it with me, you're breaking up with Jongin," he repeated.
Sehun pulled you off the couch and you glared at him, "You're breaking up with Jongin," you said smartly.
"Alright smartass. Listen. I know you're stressed and worried, but I promise nothing bad is going to happen. Everything will be okay. The sun will come up in the morning and we'll all see another day. But what is it worth it if you're not taking advantage of every single day you get? Don't waste your time with Jongin because you think it's not fair to break up with him. I've said this before and I'm sure Jae has,” he gave you a look, “and you know I hate agreeing with her. You're being unfair by staying with him. You're taking away time he could be with someone that truly wants to be with him and that loves him. Don't you want that for him?"
The sarcastic mood you had fell and you felt your heart slam into your chest. He was right. You wanted Jongin's happiness so if that meant temporarily having to break his heart, it was worth it. You loved Jongin as a best friend and hoped to be able to keep him as a friend once it was all said in done.
The two of you just weren't meant to be.
You didn't know if you and Baekhyun were either but you knew the first step was to break up with Jongin and just like Sehun said, get some time to yourself.
But you would have to make it through the Halloween party tomorrow first.
↠✿✿✿↞
"Only monsters are upset on Halloween," Jae said to you as she helped you into your costume.
"That's really ironic, Jae," you said.
She laughed, "Did anyone tell you to dress up as an actual scary vampire? No. Most people dress like me nowadays," she shrugged while gesturing to her skin tight dress, cat ears, and painted face.
You rolled your eyes, "What fun is that? I can dress as a sexy cat any day I want without question. But a badass vampire?" You scoffed, "I never get that chance." This time you were going all out and were wearing sleek black pants, a black turtleneck, and a leather jacket. You looked like a badass assassin vampire you thought as Jae helped you get your makeup as vampy and intimidating as possible.
She quirked an eyebrow, "Any day, huh? For who exactly? Jongin or Baekhyun?"
Closing your eyes as she applied eyeshadow you tried to ignore her until you heard your phone vibrate and Jae reached for it. She nearly choked.
"Or Sehun?" She asked with a smirk showing you her phone.
Okay so maybe you and Sehun were both going as badass vampires and even though you had planned it, Jae didn't have to know. A lot of people were vampires on Halloween. "Shut up, it's just a coincidence."
She pulled your phone away and scrolled through your messages, "You should be dressing up with Jongin, you know. He is still your boyfriend."
You were just about to speak before Jae gasped.
"You lying bitch. You guys totally planned it,” her eyes were narrowed and trained on your phone.
"It was an afterthought," you lied.
"I read your messages, you idiot. You've been planning it for weeks. I asked you to be a cat with me a month ago!" She whined.
You patted her head, "I told you I don't like dressing like that on Halloween."
She gave you a look and practically growled at you, "Some of us don't get attention so easily, Ms. I-have-a-boyfriend-and-two-on-the-backburner."
Dipping your finger into some of the fake blood, you smeared it on her cheek, "I hate you so much sometimes," you grumbled as she tried to wipe the fake blood away.
"Just have a foursome already and release some of the tension for the rest of us in the group."
"That's rude," you said while touching up her painted cat nose with pink paint.
She hummed. "Minseok and Junmyeon were talking about it the other day. The guys can sense the tension."
Using your free hand you pinched her arm, "Minseok, huh?"
When she saw your raised eyebrows she grabbed your wrist, "Don't start with me."
You snatched your hand away from her and pressed it to your mouth trying to suppress a giggle, "You are dressed up as a cat for Minseok."
"Shut up! No, I'm not!"
"You've had a crush on him for so long. Just fuck and get it over with," you said the last part sarcastically.
She pointed at you, "You need to stop hanging out with Sehun." Sehun and Jae always had a strange relationship and somehow with their too similar but strong personalities, they never quite got along.
"Excuse me but then so do you! You just suggested I have a foursome!"
The two of you broke out in laughter. "Maybe it's time we both lose our virginity."
You gave her a pointed look, "Have fun with that."
There was no way you were giving it up to Jongin now that you were going to break up with him. Sure it had been on your mind in the past, but now you knew for certain that he wasn't the one. But even if you got with Baekhyun, you still had plans of keeping your innocence as long as you could. Everyone let go of their virginity so easily in high school and you didn't want to be another case of that.
You had to think smart although thinking smart wasn't something you were good at now that Baekhyun had entered your life.
The moment you walked in Yixing's house you could feel Baekhyun's eyes on you like the magnets they seemed to be. Yixing gave you a once over and poked his thumb up. "You look super vampy. It's a good look on you," he said with a wink. As he looked at Jae he tried to suppress a laugh, "A cat. How original Jae."
She flipped him off, "Says the zombie," she said to Yixing who was adorned in old and decaying makeup and holey clothing.
"My mom said I looked great," he said pressing his arms against his chest.
"You look awesome, Yixing. Don't mind Jae, she dressed up for Minseok."
Jae elbowed you roughly but you just smiled. "I should have known," Yixing said with a smirk.
"They see it all, Jae," you said drawing her name out in a mocking tone.
"What about me?" Minseok asked coming up to the three of you.
"Nothing," Jae said quickly and rushed off to the kitchen.
The three of you looked at each other, "You know, she's really bold until Minseok comes around," Yixing acknowledged.
You nodded, "Yeah, I know."
"Doesn't she know that I like her too?" Minseok asked standing next to Yixing also sporting a cat ear headband and a cat tail. "Do you know how much balls it takes to dress up as a cat being the man I am?"
"Go talk to her," you suggested while pointing in the direction Jae went. "She likes men that chase after her."
Yixing laughed, "How fitting for a girl dressed as a cat."
You laughed with him as Minseok followed behind her, his tail whipping behind him as he walked making the pair of you laugh anymore. "Where is your mom at?" You asked as once you stopped laughing and Yixing led you into the living room.
"She and my dad are out in the backyard grilling up some weird ass food. I mean we did all dress up as zombies so it has to fit the theme I guess," he joked.
While Yixing was keeping you entertained, your smile faded the moment your eyes met Baekhyun's. Yixing noticed Baekhyun staring at you from across the room and he cleared his throat awkwardly and excused himself.
You groaned wondering just how many people in the group had noticed the tension between you and Baekhyun.
Much to your dislike, Baekhyun approached you but he kept his distance and stood a couple feet from you. That didn't stop the overwhelming smell of his cologne from hitting you though. "You make the most gorgeous vampire," Baekhyun whispered, sending chills down your spine.
"You're an assassin?" You asked as you looked him up and down.
He nodded, "If you're not careful, I may have to go after your vampire mate," he said tilting his head towards Sehun who had entered Yixing's house and was staring at you and Baekhyun.
"We're just friends," you defended.
Baekhyun shrugged, "It doesn't matter because regardless I know you have feelings for me, and that's all that matters." He winked and left you standing alone and dumbfounded.
"Hey, beautiful," Jongin said coming up behind you and snaking his arm around your waist. He was dressed as a grim reaper and you couldn't help but notice how attractive he looked dressed that way. Even though you were still sure that you needed to break up with him, you couldn't deny the attraction you had to him. It wouldn't be hard for him to get any girls but you knew Jongin didn't use his looks to get dates. Jongin preferred to know who he dated and wanted them to see him for his personality and not his good looks.
He pressed a kiss to your lips and your heart clenched. Sehun and Baekhyun were both staring at you all the while and you did not feel good about it.
You would let your relationship have this one last happy night and you would break up with him tomorrow after school.
While you hoped that Jongin would give you more reasons to want to end your relationship that night, he didn't. Jongin just reminded you off all the reasons you had dated him in the first place. He was kind, gentle, and affectionate and even though you would regret it, you indulged in it all for one more night.
You held him and kissed him as if it was your last time because, in reality, it was.  Even if you decided you ever wanted to be back with Jongin, you doubted the two of you could come back together. You weren't sure breaking up with him was exactly what you wanted but that was the problem. If you weren't sure of Jongin then you knew you had to end it because the moment you found the one, you would be sure.

School on Friday was miserable.
It was almost like your entire group of friends could feel something was different in the air and everyone seemed to be on edge, especially you.
You hadn't noticed how much on edge you were until Junmyeon had tried to get your attention during your passing period to fifth hour.
Apparently, he had said your name several times and when you didn't hear him the last time, he placed his hands gently on your shoulders and you ended up hitting him in the groin by accident.
"It's fine," he squeaked, "I'm fine." He stood up and tried to clear his throat a few times, pain still evident on your face.
"I'm so sorry, Jun," you said as you picked up your books that you had dropped when he came up.
He waved you off, "It's okay, really," he said gently as he helped you retrieve all of your books. "What's gotten into you lately?"
You sighed and leaned against your locker, "I have no idea," you admitted.
"You can talk to me you know," he said looking at you with a handsome smile. Junmyeon was too pretty for his own good, you thought.
Your eyes darted around the hall nervously and while you didn't intend on telling anyone else, it was killing you to keep to yourself and you could use the insight that Junmyeon had. He was by far one of the more reasonable boys in the group and he was much more mature. "Junie," you whined.
He moved closer to you, leaning on the lockers with you. "What is it? You can tell me anything. I'm no Chanyeol."
That caused you to laugh. It was true, Chanyeol had a huge mouth. "I think there's going to be a change in our group dynamic soon," you admitted.
"Don't speak in riddles."
"I'm going to break up with Jongin," you whispered.
A shaky breath passes his lips, "I think we're all figuring that out."
"W-what?" You stuttered.
"Baekhyun and you have this thing and we all kind of see it – apart from Jongin. We've been trying to ignore it and let the three of you figure it out but it's hard not to notice the attraction you to have together."
You wiped a hand down your face, "I feel like the worst person ever."
Junmyeon pursed his lips, "You're doing the right thing."
"Really?" If there was anyone's blessing you wanted, it had to be Junmyeon's.
"Really. The sooner the better. You and Baekhyun seem to have something going on and it would be a shame to pass that up just because you feel bad. Jongin will be fine. No offense to you, but there are other fish in the sea."
Junmyeon's comforting words and assurance gave you the strength you needed to get through the rest of the school day without shaking or worrying too much.
The moment you saw Jongin waiting for you outside of school though, it all broke down and you started crying as you flung yourself into his arms.
"What's wrong?" Jongin asked tenderly.
"Can we just go home?" You asked as you sniffled.
Jongin nodded and he held you in his arms as the two of you walked to the parking lot to your car. "Can you drive or do you want me to?"
"Will you?"
He nodded and you handed him your car keys, "Anything for you."
Before you got to your car, you saw Baekhyun and Chanyeol laughing as they walked towards Chanyeol's car that was parked next to yours. You tried your best to suck the tears back so they wouldn't see as they approached.
"What are your guys' plans for the night?" Chanyeol asked as he twirled his keys around his finger.
Jongin looked at you, making sure you were okay. "We're just going to spend some alone time together," he said softly while his eyes searched your face.
Chanyeol choked, "I don't need to hear about your sex life."
Jongin glared at him but your eyes were locked on Baekhyun whose face was contorted at the two of you. He looked jealous and you wanted to tell him not to be. You wanted to scream at him that you were breaking up with Jongin just like he said, but instead, you just stood there trying not to let the floodgates open.
"Shut up, Chanyeol. Y/N is clearly having a bad day," you heard him grit out as you got inside the car.
Jongin cared about you so much... and here you were breaking up with him.
This is for the best.
This is for the best.
This is for the best.
You chanted the words in your head repeatedly. Jongin cared about you and you cared about him which is why you had to let him go. Sometimes loving someone really was letting them free.
↠✿✿✿↞
The two of you sat on your bed as you sobbed into Jongin's shirt.
Jongin grasped at your wrists and pulled your face away so he could look at you. You knew your face must have been red and puffy. "Babe, you have to talk to me so that I can help you."
"You're going to h-h-hate me," you hiccuped.
He gave you a loving kiss on your forehead, "I will never hate you. You can tell me anything."
You shook your head, "N-not this."
"I give you my word. I promise nothing you can say will make me hate you. Please just talk to me."
Pressing your hands to his cheek, you lean in to kiss Jongin for the last time. He is gentle as he kisses you back and you can taste the salty tears on your lips but while it feels comforting and warm, you don't feel the spark and you keep picturing Baekhyun. You gave it a shot, one last kiss to see if you were making a mistake but as you pulled away, it was even more clear. You had to break up with him. "I think... I think we should... b-b-break up," you mumbled while looking at Jongin through cloudy eyes.
"What?" He looked shocked and heartbroken.
"I think we should break up," you said more clearly.
Jongin sighed, "Why? What happened?"
You wanted so badly to wipe the sad look off his face by kissing and holding him but the words were already out. You didn't get to comfort him in that way anymore. "I just think we're better as friends."
His face dropped. "Yeah, I get it. I think that too," but his words were hasty and they didn't seem so sure.
"Really? You're not mad at me?"
He nodded. "I couldn't be mad at you. You mean too much to me... as a friend. It wasn't going well for us anyways."
Jongin put a hand on your shoulder and gave you a half-hearted smile. "I'm going to call one of the guys to pick me up, okay? I need a little space. We just broke up and I don't think I should stick around, you know?"
You reached out to him, "We're still friends right?"
Giving you a brief hug, he nodded. "Always," but you found yourself not believing him as you swore you saw a tear drop down his cheek as he turned away and walked out of your room.
↠✿✿✿↞
"I did it," you cried into the phone.
You heard a deep sigh and an "I'll be right over," before the phone hung up and you curled your arms around your shaking frame.
Jongin had left you alone and you knew he had to be upset. You had hurt him just the way you hadn't wanted to and while he said he agreed, you weren't too sure. It hurt that he was gone and that you were a single and confused woman.
It didn't take long for your bedroom door to be swung open to reveal a sad-eyed Sehun. Wrapped around his arms were several plastic bags and Sehun was dressed in sweat pants and a t-shirt.
"What's all t-that?" You managed to get out.
Sehun walked over to you and sat the bags down on the bed. "Strawberry ice cream, dark chocolate candy, those sour gummies you love, and enough chips and popcorn to take a bath in."
You furrowed your brows at Sehun, "How did you get all this quickly?" You asked in awe as you wiped the wet tears from your cheeks.
With a mischievous smile, Sehun pressed a warm hand to your cheek, "I bought everything last night." Reaching into one of the bags, he pulled out a pink fluffy stuffed dog and handed it to you. This made more tears come from your eyes. You were allergic to dogs so you were never able to have one and you had a love for stuffed animals. There was no amount of objects that could make you feel better than what Sehun had brought to you.
He really was your best friend after all.
"Don’t look so miserable," he said as he joined you on your bed. "We're going to eat until we puke and spend the weekend holed up in your room until you have gotten all your emotions out."
"You're staying all weekend?"
Sehun faked offense. "What kind of friend would I be if I let you go through the first weekend as a single woman alone?"
"I could call Jae if you don't want to stay, Sehunnie," you muttered.
He pulled you into an embrace, "No. I want to be here with you. Besides, we both know I'm the one you need to pull you through this."
Reaching into one of the bags, he pulled out a dark chocolate candy bar and waved it in front of your face.
"You know I'm right," he grinned.
Snatching the bar away from him, you leaned into Sehun. "Nobody will ever be like you, Sehun."
He scoffed, "Once you jump Baekhyun's bones, I'll be a peasant to you."
You smacked him a few times on the head, "You're always going to be my number one man, you know that!"
His eyes grew wide and he gave you a playful smile, "So you will be jumping Baekhyun's bones – or well, bone?"
"Sehun!"
↠✿✿✿↞
Sehun really had spent the weekend with you and he was there to witness the brunt of your emotions. You cried countless times over Jongin and the mistake you thought you made and Sehun let you. He would hold you until the tears stopped and then he would get you something to eat to wash away your pain.
He even told the guys to fuck off when they had heard the news from Chanyeol who Jongin made the mistake of slipping up to. They all texted you concerned for your well being and whining about how perfect you and Jongin were but Sehun fought them off.
"It's none of your business," he hissed into the phone when Jongdae had called to check on you.
"Sehun, it's fine," you sighed. After all, it was Jongdae and he was one of the other guys you were close to.
He rolled his eyes, "No, it's not. This doesn't concern them," he said to you with his hand clapped over the mouthpiece of his phone.
"It kind of does," you whispered.
And then started another jolt of waterworks that Sehun blamed on Jongdae. No matter how much you cried and wiped tears on his shirt, Sehun didn't care. He just wanted you to be okay again.
Eventually, by Sunday night, you weren't so bad. Clutching the stuffed dog that Sehun had got you, you urged him to go home despite your thoughts wanting otherwise. "I'll be fine," you lied watching as he picked up your now messy room.
He gave you a look, "Are you sure?"
You weren't sure especially since your constantly busy parents were still on a business trip and you would be home alone but you weren't going to tell Sehun that. He needed to take time for himself instead of being worried about you. His life was more than just being your shoulder to cry on and that was for sure. You gave him your best reassuring nod and walked him to the door.
Sehun pointed a finger at you. "If anything goes amiss and you need a cuddle buddy-"
"I know, called Jongdae."
With that, he huffed out a breath.
Wrapping your arms around him, you smiled. "I know. I'll call you, okay?"
He hugged you back, pushing you into his chest, "Even if you think you want to cuddle with Baekhyun, you don't. Cuddling with him would only lead to something else."
"Sehun," you warned.
"Seriously! Baekhyun can be a pig."
You scoffed, "And you're not?"
Pulling away, he patted your head. "Sure, I can be but not with you – never with you. You're precious and Baekhyun needs to know that."
"I'm sure you'll let him know."
"You bet your ass I will."
"I love you, Sehun," you said as stared into his eyes.
He gave you the warmest smile and ruffled your hair, "I know, Y/N. I love you too. Okay?"
He turned to leave but he stopped and spun on his heels, pointing at you once again.
"If Baekhyun tries anything with you, just imagine I'm in the room. There's no way you'll sleep with him if you imagine me sitting in the corner with arms crossed over my chest!" The imagine of Sehun watching you and Baekhyun trying to get intimate was embarrassing. "See! It works," he said with triumph at your flushed face.
You pushed him out the door, "What kind of girl do you think I am?"
"A good one," he said looking over his shoulders, "And I know you are still my pure little Y/N. I want you to stay that way until the right guy comes around because you can't trust these snake bastards. And that includes Baek. He always looks like he wants to eat you alive and while that idea might thrill you," he shivered, "It makes me want to punch him in the head."
You couldn't help but smile even through your flushed state. Sehun was a caring friend and it made everything inside you warm. You weren't sure if you would ever come across someone as great as him, but it didn't matter because he was enough. There was a way he looked at you that made you feel like nothing else mattered. As if you were good enough for everything you had ever hoped for. You didn't want to imagine where you would be without Sehun.
"You better be listening," he grunted out.
"I am," you said trying to shut the door behind him. "I won't sleep with Baekhyun – in fact, I won't even invite him over, okay? I love you, Sehunnie. Drive careful."
He pinched your cheek before giving you a toothy grin. "I love you. I would say fuck carefully, but we both know you won't be sleeping with anyone because your Sehunnie told you not to," he said with a wink.
You nodded, "That's right."
↠✿✿✿↞
So you didn't keep your word. Not about the not sleeping with Baekhyun, but that you said you wouldn't invite him over. Okay, well you didn't do that either but when Baekhyun texted you asking if your parents were home, you texted back saying no – even though you knew it was wrong.
You weren't going to sleep with him or anything like Sehun worried about but in your vulnerable state, you didn't think it would be good to see the one person who had flipped your life upside down and caused you to break up with Jongin in the first place.
But what could you say? The thrill of seeing Baekhyun was too great and since Sehun had left that afternoon, you felt lonely. While you should have called Sehun, Baekhyun made you weak.
The moment you opened the door and saw him standing there in skinny jeans and a black button up, you wanted to lose yourself in his arms but you tried to contain yourself. Crossing your arms over your chest tightly, you gestured for him to come in.
"Y/N," he said with a tender voice. The moment the front door shut behind him, he pressed a palm to your cheek and your senses were overwhelmed with the smell of Baekhyun's cologne. "Chanyeol wasn't spewing bullshit for once," he mumbled to himself.
You choked out a laugh, "Chanyeol hardly is, it's just that nobody wants to believe him."
He brushed his fingers over your eyes and cheeks. "You look like you've been crying a lot," he noticed.
Trying to move your gaze away from his, you looked down at the stuffed dog that was sitting on the couch. "It's nothing. Just allergies."
"Allergies?" He said in a tone that let you know he wasn't impressed with your lie. "It's okay to be upset. I'm sorry if I forced you to break up with Jongin."
You pulled the pink dog into your clutches and held it against your side. "You didn't force me to break up with him," you began walking towards your room, knowing Baekhyun would follow. "I'm just hoping I made the right decision," you admitted.
Baekhyun grabbed your hand as he followed you up the stairs and warmth flowed through your senses. "You did."
"How do you know?" You asked with uncertainty as you thought about the tear you had seen fall from Jongin's eye.
When you reached your room, Baekhyun still grasped your hand but wrapped his other one around your waist. The butterflies everyone said you got in your stomach when you were nervous around someone you liked, erupted inside your own. You felt your body tingling and his touch was already beginning to make your head spin. "I know because of how you react to me. I can see it in your eyes and the way that your body trembles. You don't act like this with Jongin."
He was right. Jongin didn't make you feel the way Baekhyun did but it wasn't like Jongin didn't make you feel anything because Jongin did. He made you feel happy, safe, and content but Baekhyun made you feel alive and excited. The two were hard to compare because from what you knew of Baekhyun, he seemed to be different from the gentle and sweet nature that was Jongin.
"The way you're flushed now and deep in thought also gives it away," Baekhyun noted with a smirk as he pressed his hand more roughly into your waist. "Why are you so upset about the breakup?" He wondered.
You melted into his hold on you. "I just worry if I made the decision stupidly or selfishly. I love Jongin as a friend and maybe this," you gestured between the two of you, "is just a temporary attraction and that I should have stuck it out with Jongin. Things were safe with Jongin and I like safe. I know I hurt him and that hurts me because he's important to me."
Baekhyun shrugged, "Jongin is a tough guy. He's attractive and he'll bounce back. Besides, safe isn't always fun."
"Why did you even have to come along? Everything was so simple before you. If you would have never stared at me or talked to me the way you did, everything would have been okay."
"Should we deny our attraction to each other just for the sake of others?"
You shrugged this time.
"I'm going to shut your worries and thoughts up," Baekhyun said.
You stared at him as he pulled you closer to him, "I don't think that's a good idea. I'm vulnerable right now and Sehun said-"
Baekhyun raised an eyebrow at you and pursed his lips, "Are you his puppy or something?"
"Excuse me?"
He tilted his head, "You heard me. Why do you have to listen to him? Or are you using me as breaking up with Jongin when in reality you want Sehun?"
Shaking your head, you let out a breath in annoyance. Baekhyun knew how to get under your skin and it was irritating. How could someone so attractive be so annoying? "Sehun and I are just friends, besides, if we wanted each other what would stop us? He was here all weekend with me," you said giving Baekhyun a glare.
"I know, I can smell his fucking cologne," Baekhyun sneered.
"So?" But the look on his face held it all. "Are you jealous?"
He let go of your hand and waist in a swift movement, pressing his palms to your face. "Mm. Maybe. I can't lie that the thought of him touching you makes me a little angry. Just like every time I watched Jongin touch you," he groaned. "It was torture because, from the moment I saw you, I thought you were mine."
You shivered underneath Baekhyun's touch.
"Something about you just makes me feel like I never have."
"Sehun warned me that you would corrupt me," you admitted quietly while your eyes moved to Baekhyun's lips. You couldn't lie that you got excited at the idea of being corrupted by Baekhyun.
Baekhyun rubbed his thumb in circles on your cheek, "Corrupt you? Sehun says that as if you’re innocent."
That takes you by surprise. "I am," you defend.
Tightening his hold on your cheeks, Baekhyun runs his tongue across his bottom lip. "You may be on the surface, but I can see you're not deep down. I can't corrupt something that isn't innocent, to begin with. Don't worry, I don't mind if you aren't the innocent girl you pretended to be for Jongin. I'm okay if you're rough around the edges and I want to activate the wild side in you."
"I broke up with Jongin for a crazy person," you whispered.
His head nodded at that, "I'm crazy about you. Now," Baekhyun moved his eyes down to your lips, "will you let me kiss you? I think I've waited long enough and if I wait any longer I might explode."
"But... Jongin."
"Do you want me to kiss you or not?"
Before you could stop yourself, you nodded meekly and Baekhyun's lips were almost instantly on yours. You felt electrified and warmth was spreading throughout your limbs as you sunk into Baekhyun's hold on you.
He wasn't rough with his kiss like you expected him to be. Instead, he was gentle. His kiss made you feel special and while Jongin made you feel special, he never made you feel just as Baekhyun was.
It wasn't long before Baekhyun pulled away and rested his forehead on yours. "You're going to ruin me," he whispered as his hands dropped from your face and he pressed one more quick kiss to your lips before taking you in his arms.

Unexpected Father - Kai
Tumblr media
The Unexpected Father Series
One - Jongdae | Two - Kai |
Pairing: ReaderxKai
Word count: 2.4k
Summary: You and Kai had been dating for a couple years and everything was going well until you get back a positive pregnancy test. While you are scared, you can’t help but be in love with the forming child. Kai doesn’t take it so well - and then things take an unexpected turn.
The pregnancy test in front of you had you staring in shock. You wanted to scream, you wanted to cry - and well frankly, you wanted to jump off a fucking building. You couldn't believe that this had happened to you of all people. You always thought you would never be that girl.
But here you were... as that girl. Sobbing and afraid to tell your boyfriend.
Maybe it would have been okay if you were any other girl. But the problem didn't lay within you at all, it was merely who the baby's dad was.
You were trembling with fear as you clutched the bathroom sink. How could this happen? You were on birth control and you took it regularly every day; how could it fail?
You were praying that it was one of the rare false positives.
Fear heavy in your heart, you called your doctor so you could go get a blood test. You didn't want to go alone, but your situation deemed otherwise. You didn't have a choice. Your friends and family all knew who your boyfriend was so they wouldn't hesitate to worry you more about the unplanned pregnancy. He couldn't come with you because well until you had the appointment, you couldn't be sure you really were pregnant.
You took birth control regularly. You never missed a day. There's no way it failed. No way.
You went to your appointment a week after your positive pregnancy test and sat against the harsh paper-covered bed. Your hands shook from where they were placed over your lap as you waited for the doctor.
When he came back, he was smiling. "Well, it's positive! Looks like you do have a little one on the way!"
You shook your head as tears threatened to fall. "How? I took my birth control perfectly."
He clutched the clipboard and looked at you. "Well, it seems you were on antibiotics a bit over a month ago? You had an infection of some sort."
Your face dropped.
"Antibiotics make birth control ineffective, you see." He said with a gentle voice when he saw your tears. "I'm very sorry."
And then the waterworks started. Tears coating your cheeks.
Your head told you that everything would be okay, and you had already began to love the baby, but your heart feared for how Kai would take it.
---
A couple weeks went by and the time for Kai to come home was rolling near. Every day you struggled not to cry as the little bud developed inside you, as you worried about Kai not knowing.
Your stomach was starting to poke out as you neared your ten-week mark. You were afraid everyone would notice, so instead, you started to wear big clothing when you went out. You were in this alone and couldn't tell a soul until you told Kai. But you were afraid.
That didn't stop you from talking to the baby inside you. You were scared and the situation wasn't right, but you couldn't help but love the little child that was half you, and half the man you loved.
It didn't stop you from blasting Exo music and singing and dancing with your baby. You had a few good moments among your constant crying. You weren't worried for what the baby meant for you, you were more worried about what it meant for Kai.
You knew that the baby could be the savior you needed. You weren’t a saint and you made a lot of mistakes. Maybe this baby could help you get your life on track, after all, you loved it so much already.
And then, after dealing with four weeks of your pregnancy alone, Kai came home. You were wearing tight clothes while you cleaned the apartment when Kai let himself in. His large eyes and bright smile made your heart ache.
"Kai." You said as he opened his arms to you. He enveloped you in a hug so sweet that you melted into his arms.
"Hey, my love." He kissed you fiercely before pulling away and looking at you.
His eyes furrowed when he looked you up and down. You knew why. You definitely were showing. "Kai." You said gently.
The look he gave you was fierce.
"I need to talk to you." Your voice trembled.
"Baby?" His voice was on edge.
You sighed. "Let's go get something to eat and talk about this."
"No. Tell me. Now."
"Kai."
"Now!" His voice was louder than he had intended it to be so he took a step back from you, fearful of himself almost.
Your hands shook as you reached out for his. His hands were warm on yours, making you feel slightly calmer than you should have, "I'm pregnant."
If you could see someone's thoughts, you were sure you could see Kai's now - and they weren’t good. He looked crushed as he gripped your hands harder and tried not to fall to the floor. "No." He said quietly.
You nodded. "Yes. I am ten weeks and four days today."
"Ten weeks!" His eyes were blazing. "And you only told me now?!"
"You were on tour, I didn't want to ruin it for you." You were scared by the look in his eyes. He wasn't smiling and if looks could kill, you would be dead.
"I'm not ready to be a father. I can't. I don't have time. My career would be crushed."
All that was obvious. You knew that. But what could you do? Give the baby up for adoption? You already loved the baby so much and you couldn't bare knowing someone else was raising your and Kai's child. Abortion? It wasn't right for you. You didn't disagree with it, but it just wasn't right for you. "I'm sorry, Kai. What do you want me to do?" You asked with your head dropped towards your feet.
"Well, I don't want to have a fucking kid! What do you want me to do?"
"I don't know. Did you want me to not tell you?"
"I don't fucking know. I don't fucking know." He wouldn't look at me in the eyes as he paced around the living room. "How did this even happen?"
Biting your lip you and using the wall to keep yourself from falling over, you said, "Remember how I was sick a couple months ago?" When he nodded his head, you continued, "Well, antibiotics makes birth control ineffective."
"So you did this?" He questioned with anger.
What? How could he think it was your fault? If he didn't know antibiotics made birth control ineffective, how could you? "No. I didn't."
"I can't fucking believe this. I really can't. How could you do this to me?" His voice boomed across the living room and the look of hatred in his eyes made tears prickle against your eyelids.
"I didn't do it!" You screamed loudly as tears fell.
"I have everything to lose!"
"I know! You know all that matters to me, Kai! But what can I do? What can I do?" Tears streamed down your cheeks.
He gritted his teeth so hard you swear you could hear it. "It shouldn't have happened." He grabbed the bag he had brought with him and slung it over his shoulder as he sent you one last look before pulling open your front door and storming out.
Before he could leave, you yelled out. "Kai! Where are you going?" The tears kept their course, rolling from your eyes and down your cheeks.
"Anywhere but here."
The words stung you as you clutched your stomach and fell to the ground. It had gone worse than you had expected.
Kai disappeared from your radar for three days. He didn't text or call so you gave him the space he needed. You weren't sure what else could be done in the situation, so you let it be. What would happen from that day on, would happen. You couldn't force Kai to be happy with the situation.
While you had three days of sadness without Kai, you were comforted by your growing child. You couldn't wait for the moments you could feel the baby kick and you thought maybe that experience would warm Kai up to the situation more.
What if he wouldn't accept you and the baby? Well, that was something you may have to deal with. You spent the three days also mentally preparing yourself for the possibility of you being a single mother. You and the baby would become a secret, but to you, it was worth it.
At the time, nobody but Kai and the little baby mattered to you and you would do anything to protect them and keep them happy. While making Kai happy would be harder, you would do whatever you could as long as it didn't involve getting rid of your child. You wouldn't compromise on that. Sure, it was half his and he had rights in your mind – but if he decided he didn't want the baby, he wouldn't have to be around it. He could go on and forget that the baby exists. No matter how bad it would hurt.
Something felt off today, though. Your stomach felt exceptionally tight and you kept getting cramps. You tried to ignore it, and pass it off as something normal in pregnancy. So you still went to work in your too big shirt, and the only jeans you had left that still fit.
At some point in the day, the cramping got so bad that you started to sweat and you couldn't focus on your work. It was almost as if you could feel yourself going in and out of consciousness.
"Y/N." Your coworker said frantically, touching your shoulder.
You looked up at her as you trembled. "Y-yeah?" But your voice felt disconnected from your body.
"Are you alright?"
You tried to smile and nodded, "I'm just going to go to the bathroom." But as you stood up, you wobbled forward and your coworker steadied you by wrapping her arm around your back. She looked down to your office chair in horror. You looked down to see what the fuss was about when you realized it was coated in blood.
The last thing you heard before passing out was your coworker screaming for your boss and to call an ambulance.
When you opened your eyes, a doctor stood in front of you. "You're awake." He smiled and you stretched your neck out before trying to pull yourself to a sitting position. He gently pressed his hand on your shoulder. "Just relax okay?" He sat down on a chair near your bed. "Y/N? Did you know you were pregnant?"
You nodded slowly. What happened? You wondered. You remember blood and then passing out. Blood and 'you were pregnant' echoed in your head. You started to panic but tried to keep calm. Your baby had to be fine. It had to be. "Is the baby okay?"
"I'm very sorry, but no. You had a miscarriage."
"What?" You cried out, cupping your hand to your mouth and looking down at your stomach. It still looked the same, there was no way. "No-"
He touched your arm. "I'm sorry."
"How?"
He shook his head. "We don't know at the moment, dear. It could have been anything. The important thing is you're okay. You were bleeding too much and we were afraid you would need a transfusion."
It didn't matter that you were okay in your head, all you wanted was your baby. "My baby." You cried harder not knowing how to feel besides empty. Empty and broken hearted.
"Do you have any family you can call to be with you? We will get you on some anxiety medication if necessary and we will discharge you in a few hours if all goes well."
If all goes well? What does that mean? Your baby is already gone – things couldn't get any worse.
"Do you want us to call a family member?"
You shook your head. Only one person knew. Although you weren't sure you wanted him there, you picked up your phone and called him once the doctor left. Even though your hand trembled, you tried to calm down. Your free hand clutched your stomach and after two rings the Kai picked up.
Before you could speak, he was already doing so. "Baby, I'm so sorry. Where are you? I'm at the apartment and I want to talk." He sighed as you cried silently. "I talked to the guys and they made me realize how stupid I am. I'm ready." There were some of the other boys' voices in the background.
"What?" You asked, trying to keep your voice steady.
"I'm ready to be a dad."
You couldn't hold back your sobbing now. "Kai."
"Baby? Baby, what's wrong?" Panic laced his voice.
"I'm at the hospital."
The voices from the background quieted. "W-what? Why?"
"I lost the baby."
The silence was eerie and all you could hear was the beeping of the machines in your room. "Where are you?"
You told him which hospital and he immediately hung up. You continued crying, thinking about what it meant to lose your baby. Kai would no longer have his future implicated. You wouldn't have to worry about the future of your relationship - but none of that mattered to you anymore. What mattered is that a life you created was just destroyed by your own body. The guilt would consume you. You smashed your free hand into the bed.
Your head was consumed with thoughts of what you could have done differently. You wanted to go back just a few days, to protect your baby or to at least give you more time with it. You thought you given the baby enough love and attention in the time you were pregnant. Every day you listened to Exo, danced and talked to the baby. Was that not enough to make it feel loved?
Time seemed to slip by you and you didn't know how long it had been, but Kai came rushing into the hospital room, tears on his cheeks and bloodshot eyes. He hurried over to you and gripped your hands while kissing every inch of your face and trying to brush your tears away.
"Baby, I'm so sorry."
He placed a hand on your stomach and a sob escaped his lips. You tried to comfort him by rubbing your hand on his cheek, but you were so broken that you didn't know how well it worked.
"I love you." He said as he closed his eyes. "Everything's going to be okay, I promise. We'll make everything better, okay? We'll get through this."
But you didn't know if it would be okay and you didn't know if you could get through this. How could you live when you felt all of this heartbreak?
If only you had loved the baby a little more, you thought. If only you had been a little happier...
If only you had gotten more time.
