The Gentleman’s Agreement
Tumblr media
IT’S TIME! Here it is, my fic for the DTQK Big Bang Event! @dtqkbigbang
I got paired with @phthalo-halo as my artist, and holy cow did they blow it out of the water. I’ve never had any fanart or anything for my fics, and here comes Phthalo with a whole damn animatic. It’s also been great getting to know them over the past few months—they’re a great person and artist, so go check them out!
Also a big thanks to my beta for this fic, Grape, who helped me make sure everything looked nice and pretty, as well as gave me some very helpful tips and suggestions. Check their works out on ao3
Edit: it says it’s still hidden, but click proceed and you can see it!

hi! i absolutely love your art and animatics, I was just rewatching the 11 minutes of team canada video — I’ve been wanting to go back and watch some team canada content for the first time but i never know where to start! do you have any suggestions? thanks ! (:
(im trying not to be too excited rn brb-)
oh my gosh!! first of all, thank you :D means a lot to me!! second of all, I'll try my best to be as unbiased as i totally can be (✨fails gloriously✨)
too long; wont read: Mushroom Cloud prank or Simulation Protocol: Animosity
1. I think it depends on if you want to get the most team canada experience from certain series or if you want to watch chronologically as someone whos first series was Uncharted Territory 3 (oooh lord!) i can say that choosing randomly is not the best option xD
Lets start with the chronological order: so the first ever ever video with them three was the Mushroom Cloud prank they did together on the mindcrack server. heres 3 links to their perspectives. If you want to proceed further i recommend this playlist just to browse through and this wikipage with their stuff listed (ther list doesn't include: Diversity 3, R.A.D. and Escape the Nether) and to check out Team Canada Montages on youtubes! That should be a pretty good starting point
And the most biased starting point would be Simulation Protocol: Animosity because i have reasons- its just a very cool map, no serious food problems, not very death loopy, funny stuff happens!, its a part of the golden era of Team Canada CTM maps, cookies and cream ice cream, etho falls down very gracefully sometimes, theyre high on sugar one time, beef explodes, bag of onions, pause falls gracefully too, swearing mosquitoes, ethoñata, bluh bluh, bluh bluh bluh, bluh. ... ,.,..,. .,.. ,.. ...,..,. ,. .
So yeah! its pretty great introductory series i think :'D ahaha-
--------
2. Second most important question is about which pov to watch. I chose to watch CTM maps from Pauses perspective (he doesnt cut much, especially swears! >:] isnt that great?) and modded series from Ethos (he can know stuff!) What about pranks... youre on your own now.... wouldn't hurt to watch every single pov tho!
Hope this helps👍🏼✨ im so sorry if it doesn't (╥﹏╥) I'll try my best next time

Hello there 👋🏻
I left the sanders sides fandom and blocked every tag just short of four years ago, just after the release of DWIT. Now, there is no obligation for you to answer this ask, but if you feel up to it, think you could fill me in on everything that’s gone down? Has there really not been another ‘proper’ episode since then? Like I said, you aren’t obligated to answer. It just, seems like there’s been a lot. Thought it would be easier to ask someone. Thanks for your time.
im putting this under a read more cos. shit gets extensive
ok so here’s the shitty rundown:
if you remember, at the end of dwit virgil confessed to having been a “dark side” in the past, and thomas didn’t seem to take it well
the next episode was a sanders asides, which is basically,, shorter videos that were promised to give us more content (lie)
in this asides, thomas found out his friend was like. an ex homophobe. and somehow that’s a parallel to virgil having been a dark side??? ok
basically thomas realized he needed to accept virgil for everything he was, including his past. but they couldn’t come up with a better allegory. so it’s apparently canon that thomas thinks of dark sides as being the same as. ex bigots. idfk
about a year later, the svs redux came out. oh boy
thomas got back from the wedding, sang a song with patton and roman about how it sucked because lee and mary lee didn’t drop everything to spend time with him instead of. celebrating their fucking wedding. thomas basically said “wahhh why won’t lee and mary lee talk to me instead of focusing on themselves at their own wedding 😡😡😡😡” which like. whatever i guess
they debated on whether it would’ve been better to discuss the wedding vs callback decision with lee and mary lee beforehand and patton was like “but they may have been sad if you picked the wedding, and they would’ve been sad if you picked the callback” blah blah
logan came in as a pixelated pop up (called “logans lowdowns”) and was like “im gonna give helpful information via text box” and no one bothered to read them cos they’re jerks (I DID. MY REACT VIDEO PROVES IT. real logan stans read the text and then had to rewind the video to hear the other dorks jshdjdjfjf)
ultimately patton ended up suggesting that thomas should sacrifice himself for others. and also he should only take care of himself in emergency situations. and he turned into a frog
oh yeah and then deceit popped in and was like “patton you’re being a little extra” and explained that if you only take care of yourself in emergency situations, you won’t be nearly as equipped to handle it as you would be if you. you know. utilized self care a more reasonable amount
then roman was like “shut up deceit” and deceit was like “my name is janus” and roman was like “shut up janus, also that name is stupid” and janus was like “well you’re the evil twin so suck on that”
im doing a bad job of explaining the tension but holy SHIT this video…
anyway, after the redux was flirting with social anxiety, which is another asides. it’s an animatic because covid prevented thomas from actually going to the mall but anyway
thomas went to the mall having one mini moral crisis after another, until he saw a cute guy he wanted to talk to. but virgil was like “hell no” and roman was like “hell yes” and they basically spent the entire video arguing over whether it was a good idea to approach a stranger (regardless of how cute said stranger was)
ultimately, thomas and the stranger, nico flores, managed to get to talking, and they really seemed to hit it off! thus followed a really cute end credit scene back at the apartment, i really recommend watching that part on its own i fucking love it
the next episode was the third and final (so far) asides, in which thomas has sought help from logan in basically getting his life together, starting with cleaning his apartment
throughout the endeavor, thomas tries to follow the plan logan helped him get together in order to get it done, but remus has plans of his own. with every step thomas takes, remus puts a bear trap in his path. you know. metaphorically
oh yeah and the subplot is that thomas texted nico something stupid and he hasn’t responded and thomas is like “pls god why” probably because he’s worried he scared nico off (i can’t remember what the text said but i think it was cringe? idk hsjdhdj)
logan is trying to help thomas work through his intrusive thoughts… hence the title of the video jsjdjfkfk but remus is pretty relentless. finally, logan approaches remus and is like “what the fuck dude” and remus is like. well y’all know what remus is like akdjkdjfkf
remus starts ignoring logan and logans eyes glow orange and he’s like “STOP IGNORING ME” and remus is turned on or something and he’s like “but who do you really wanna scream that at?”
nico calls thomas and is like “wanna look at art?” and thomas is like “hell yeah” and leaves in the middle of cleaning which makes logan sad and ill kill thomas for making logan sad /j (there was also ominous vague foreshadowing from janus eating an apple in a tree or some shit idk)
then there’s the five year anniversary shit. which is like. pointless skhddkjf it’s basically thomas asking the sides shit about the series and it’s mostly fluff until you look into it. pretty much on the surface level kahdjdfjfk
i don’t remember it well i only watched it a couple times so
im not gonna talk about can plushies improve our health it makes me too mad
then the last video in the sanders sides playlist is the over the garden wall cover which i recommend simply because thomas/janus’s voice is so good and the vibes are so soft i cant
and there ya have it. you’re caught up now. now i have a question for you; what the FUCK do you mean, “four years ago, just after the release of dwit”. that was two years ago you are lying to me /j

DSMP Tier List
This tier list was shared in a discord server I’m in, so I thought I’d give it a go. Not entirely satisfied with the section titles, so I used them quite liberally. I will explain why I put people where I did. On the tier itself I didn’t order them by preference but in my explanation I will. Please not that they will be ranked from favorite to least favorite per category (for example: I put Sapnap technically above Niki despite liking her character more) and not by how much they deserve to be in each category (for example: I prefer Technoblade to Phil but I believe people excuse Technoblade’s actions more than Phil’s). I encourage healthy suggestion in the comments since I only joined the fandom around the Green Festival and haven’t seen the history/POV’s of every character, though I try. Enjoy.
Gonna slap on a big ol’ “/rp” here just to be safe.
Tumblr media
You've done nothing wrong come here (holds you gently)
So the thing about this section is that I don't believe any dream smp character is completely innocent, so I used this section more like a top of tier than as it's title implies.
1. TommyInnit
Ngl, Tommy is my favorite character in the Dream SMP. As a fellow Loud Person I relate to him a lot and his feelings that nobody really likes him. His mental health struggles are close to my heart and (SPOILERS) his death just made me so devastated. I really hope they don't end his arc like this. Not when he was just starting to heal, please. Tommy has certainly done a lot of things wrong. I'd highly recommend watching the exile decision from both Tubbo and Tommy's POV's because you can really get a grasp of their mindsets. Despite this, he is my fave.
2. Ranboo
Until recently I preferred Tubbo to Ranboo, but cc!Ranboo just totally outdid himself on lore and acting to the point where I couldn't deny it anymore. Ranboo did do *some* things wrong, but they are less extreme than many on this list (I don't count things he might have done under Dream's control since he wasn't conscious). Ranboo's character makes me go into protecc mode. So yeah, very good enderboi.
3. Tubbo_
Tubbo doesn't have much lore for his character, but like I do with many others on this list, I like to overanalyze and interpret certain characters to be deeper than they are. The Tubbo I have in my head is a lot more complex than what cc!Tubbo probably meant to portray. There is so much angst potential with his character, similar to many others, but what puts him top tier for me is the emotional connection I have to his character and how I relate to getting so much put on my shoulders and having to make tough decisions.
you're an amazing character
Okay so technically Schlatt should be on this list if we are speaking from a narrative standpoint, but seeing as the way OP labelled the other sections on this chart I'm guessing they meant morally as well.
4. Alex Quackity
Quackity is my favorite adult character. I don't even know why, I just love the idea of this comic relief character becoming such a catalyst for plot and more serious as time goes on. I love taking the dream smp characters and making them deeper than they probably are, as I do with Tubbo, but now it seems cc!Quackity is fully taking his character to the height of his potential and I can't wait to see what he does with him next.
5. AweSamDude
(SPOILERS) As such a big Tommy fan I must admit, my first thought when Tommy died was that Sam was partly responsible. If Dream told him what he did to Tommy in exile like he claims then he would have at least put up the obsidian barrier between them or something. After watching Ranboo's most recent stream (right now it's March 3rd) I understand why Sam did what he did more. My initial anger towards him has dissipated a bit. I still love his character so much. He really did care about Tommy and now... dang. I can't wait to see what happens with him next.
6. Captain Puffy
It was very close between ranking her or Sam higher, but given all the in depth character stuff we're getting from Sam right now, I'd have to rank him above. Despite this, Puffy is a character that I started out not knowing anything about and am now feeling her climb the ranks in my books. Sometimes I feel like she's the only adult who actually put Tommy's well-being above other things, despite them not interacting often. I wasn't around for the whole "duckling" thing with Dream and have yet to watch the VODs, but I just want her to visit him now and punish him for the Tommy stuff. (SPOILERS) I can feel Dream's next ploy being trying to convince someone to let him out in exchange for bringing back Tommy and if Sam doesn't cave then Puffy probably will. Also, I really hope that her and Niki's relationship isn't forgotten. There's so much angst potential there. Also, I need sapphics to survive.
7. Eret
So, I wasn't a fan of the SMP during season one. I hadn't even heard of it except for like my friend referencing Technoblade now and then. After watching some VODs of Eret's I am slowly starting to fall in love with her characterization. I am so soft for their redemption arc, for the regret he feels. Now that cc!Eret is back from their mental health break I am so ready for more.
8. Fundy
Fundy's a character that I will forget how much I love until he goes live again, or until I reread his old quotes. He has a lot of lore to him that surprises you every time you remember. Whether its his last speech to Schlatt to COCONUT 2020, Fundy always gives the audience something more to think about.
9. "Ghostbur"
Ghostbur is one of the few characters who genuinely make me want to cry. cc!Wilbur's performance was both hilarious and immaculate. I really want to find out more about his lore, though. Do all dead people with unfinished business get an alternate version of themselves to roam the Earth while you stay in the afterlife unable to make contact unless the veil is thin? Was Ghostbur just Wilbur pretending the whole time? (SPOILERS) Is Tommy going to get one? Is Glatt canon? Much to think about.
10. BadBoyHalo
While I despise egg-possessed BBH, normal BBH has my entire heart. The fact he gave up his mind for Skeppy is *chef's kiss*. I am very impressed with everything cc!BBH is writing right now.
11. Karl Jacobs
My second favorite polyamorous dimension hopper after Star Butterfly (let me have Startomco please)! TFTSMP just gets better and better each week. His time travel shenanigans are so fun and mysterious. Karlnapity is just a big ol' pot of angst just waiting to happen. WEDDING SOON PLEASE!
no intense opinion
While I do have opinions on some of these characters, they aren't intense enough to place them anywhere else.
12. Ponk
I don't watch him all that often since he's live during my school time, but what I've seen I love. Him starting that whole side plot expanding on that one TFTSMP episode intrigues me and I can see it tying into the egg somehow. Him and Sam are really cute together (/rp) and I want him to become more plot relevant again.
13. Antfrost
GAY CAT GAY CAT GAY CAT! In all seriousness, I really want him to do stuff with his character to make him more than just BBH's second-in-command (I have similar feelings with Skeppy, but I know he isn't very big on lore). Side note, but I really love the hc that RedVelvetCake is inside the egg. I want him to join so bad.
14. Purpled
I've only just started watching the actual clips from pre-L'Manberg times and Purpled was once much more plot involved than I thought. Him planning on getting his revenge on Tommy at the same time as the "police" investigating the Camarvan back in early season one was comedy gold. Shout out to BlueberryTV on YouTube for making it so easy to watch. In conclusion, we stan an underage mercenary.
15. GeorgeNotFound
Idk if this is a hot take or not, but I feel a good portion of people who love George's character are just DNF shippers who want to turn his crumbs into an angst factory, but you know what? Valid. While I am not a DNF shipper, I have seen the angst y'all have brought to the table and very much appreciate it.
16. ConnorEatsPants
The most I think I've seen of Connor has been the hostage scene and the non-canon party scene from this season. I don't have much to say except that his small speech to Tommy after he was let go about him not being a bad person despite traumatizing him hit surprisingly hard in the feels.
17. Skeppy
cc!Skeppy is not a big roleplayer, and I get that, it's just sometimes his character feels a little like an accessory to Bad's character. Please link me some good Skeppy moments in the comments if you can, I want to try and learn more about his character. His angst with Bad right now is top tier, though, and I choose to believe that Big Daddy Island is canon and that Bad took him there to keep him free from the egg. I actually wrote a fic about this if you want to check it out! Mind the tags, though, I went a little macabre with it.
18. HBomb
When I first learned about the SMP it was two nights before the green festival and I was up until 3am at my aunt's house reading the plot summary. The first clip of the smp I saw was the election VOD, where HBomb joined for the first time. I don't know much about him other than the fact he was Fundy's maid for a time and it was absolutely hilarious. I saw the recent stuff with him leaving Greater SMP to start over and enjoyed it. Hope we get more stuff like that with him.
19. Callahan
Gets all the ladies. What else can I say?
you're trying your best and I respect that
20. Sapnap
I put Sapnap here because he's on his way to becoming an amazing character. The angst stuff with Dream is the stuff George fans can only dream of (pun unintended). I like how he went from the cop, the pet killer, Dream's right hand man, to mushroom cottegecore gay living his best life and dealing with the pain of losing his best friend. The whole "Dream's bitch" conversation with Tommy that I saw an animatic for some time ago made me hurt so good. Also #KarlnapityWedding2021.
you're redeemable, thin fucking ice though
These are characters who I somewhat dislike to a degree, but still have hope for. In my opinion this section should be switched with the one after it in terms of which is worse, but oh well.
21. Wilbur Soot
I know he's already dead but if he's brought back to life I want a redemption arc from him back. (SPOILERS) If neither him nor Tommy come back to life then dsmp has a horrible track record with killing off their mentally ill and (tw) suicidal characters. Wilbur has done some awful things, but if he's brought back I don't think he'd be beyond saving.
22. Jack Manifold
I need to say something about Jack. He is so very very close to being in the "you're trying your best" section right now after his most recent stream. His redemption arc is so close I can taste it and if he is redeemed right I can see him joining my faves. His most recent stream was just so well acted that my heart just wants to forgive him already... until my brain remembers he tried to nuke a child. Don’t know if this is also a hot take, but I think he had more of a right to be mad at Tommy than Niki did, but I know for Niki it's more complicated than that.
23. Niki Nihachu
There was a time that I adored Niki Nihachu and a part of me still does, but she has gone a little bit off the deep end. I do understand it's a trauma response, though. cc!Niki said that her villain arc is almost over, which disappointed me a bit because we kinda barely got to see it since it was so overshadowed, but I am also relieved. I just want my wlw baker back :(
people excuse your actions more than you deserve
I am just going to pretend that this section doesn't say "love". I still like these characters a lot even though they get away with a lot of shit.
24. Technoblade
I love Technoblade too much for him to be ranked this low, but like I said this ranking is based on fitting the section descriptions, not how much I love them. Technoblade's POV is understandable but also that doesn't excuse the pain he's caused so many people. L'Manberg was more than it's a government as much as Techno is more than a weapon.
25. Philza Minecraft
Philza deserves to be in this section a little less than Technoblade because I actually agree with a lot of what Philza fans say. Tommy is not Philza's kid. Phil has a lot of trauma around killing Wilbur, yes. I just don't see how you could watch Ghostbur's Friend speech during Doomsday and think he was in the right for doing it.
i don't like you
26. JSchlatt
JSchlatt is an amazing character in many ways. The acting? Glorious. The dialogue? Spot on. With that being said, YAYY HE'S DEAD!!! I really like leaning into the abusive relationship hc with him and his cabinet. He was probably the most fun villain we've ever had, though.
I WANT THIS MOTHER FUCKER DEAD
27. DreamWasTaken
Come on, do I even have to explain?

Do you have any tips for making animation-friendly designs? My designs are intentionally accurate to real-life cats, and I love them, but I know they would be super tedious to animate, or even use in a comic! How do you make such simple designs that are still so amazing and beautiful?
Well, it just takes practice and iterations I think! Mostly. But I have a few tips that I fall back on frequently I could share so Here’s my quick hot take on making animation designs:
Simplicity is your friend. I had a professor that used a term “simplexity” to describe the balance needed in order to make a character unique and easily recognizable, but also not hell to render out in a full animation. This is going to mean different things for different productions, for example something on the scale of Disney can have a character like John silver with a multi faceted robot arm whereas if we’re trying to do something low budget (*COUGHforfreeCOUGH*) you’re going to want to minimize the headache people have when drawing your character by leaning into the simple side of this term, so that they don’t want to murder you and will still be your friend after the project is over. (more under the cut!)
So what does this mean exactly? You’ll want to keep the line mileage to a minimum. For cats, this means limit the amount of detail and rendering you give the fur in your linework. I’ve seen Artists who break this rule magnificiently (like Raevi goddaMN GIRL) but for a design it is much easier on artists to streamline down to core body shapes and key character Accents in the fur (like tail shapes, cheek floofs ect). This can be pretty diverse, but I’d minimize it as much as possible (if possible down to three accents, more on this later).
For examples, On lionblazes design (line art only at this point) his Character traits are his tail shape, Mane, and Scribbly eyebrows, all aspects that mean more strokes are being taken and work done, but that are easily recognizable between frames, and artists. I also have brought up Dovewing’s design because it’s more complex in it’s line art, but I could simplify it down even more to just her butt shoulder and ear floofs and still recognize her character silhouette. In fact, paring it down even further would strengthen her recognizability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The amount of strokes you have people draw in cleanup will drastically change the amount of time it takes to render a character. Between Firestar and Bramblepaw in this shot Bramble easily took twice as long to line (or more!) thanks to his beautiful luscious curls.
Tumblr media
Next! Principle I use in simplexity is the rule of three. For whatever reason, the number three is your best friend.  It’s not as weirdly symmetrical as two or four, and maintains a unique organic-ness to it without getting carried away by five or seven. Now what am I even talking about? Pretty much everything. This is the secret of markings. This is the secret of character accents. This is the secret of color picking. The Rule of three is your best friend.
Tumblr media
Take Brambleclaw for example.  I gave him three stripes/markings on his face, and three on his side. It feels nice and natural and organic, without being overwhelming. I also gave him three specific fur accents in his line art, his ear tips/eyebrows, Belly floof, and shoulder puff. I used the rule of three in picking his colors, three main pelt colors, and three accent colors (eyes are always gonna be more complex if desired, people love rendering the shit out of eyes) and even so, three colors for the eyes. I used his lightest pelt color in only three places, and his Pink color in only three places, and his darkest color in only three places (eyebrows, Tail tip, and if I had thought to write it down, his paw pads). Even his forehead marking has three parts to it. You do it enough and it becomes really natural and subconscious. Of course, like all rules, you can still break it if you need to, but It has been one of my best friends.
Alright last thing to think about for now, (see what I did there? There are more things, but it helps people remember better to learn Three at a Time), are Shapes. Specifically using Simple identifiable shapes when constructing the body or face of your character. This is going to sound similar to the line mileage point, because they are related, but they are different. This is focusing on the macro details of a silhouette whereas Accents are about Micro details. This point also has the added benefit of helping characters look and feel related to each other if you use it potently!
Let’s take Hawkfrost and Mothwing for example. Specifically their faces. Hawk I designed first, and I wanted him to feel dangerous, and maybe a little twisted. So I decided to integrate a lot of triangles into his design because, a triangle’s shape language reads as dangerous. They’re pointy, and sharp, like teeth claws, and knives. We can’t in good conscious put an especially triangular object next to a baby because it inherently feels dangerous. They’ll poke their eye out with that tall prism. Other shapes have their meanings as well, Rectangles (cubes) are sturdy, and circular objects are the opposite of triangles, they’re the shape of eggs, fluffy pillowy things, and babies. They’re inherently safe, and soft.
Pull back from digression. Look at hawkfrost and his triangles. They have sharp claw like tips, which are emphasized even with a noticeable downward curving to their points. This motif is repeated multiple times, in his cheeks, his ears, his eyes, his chin, his nose. This becomes unifying, and inherently feels dangerous and curved, or twisted.
Tumblr media
Now look at moth. She has triangles too, but I deliberately went through the effort to make them rounder, softer, inverting the angles of her eyes to feel sad and not cruel. Yet she remains similar in enough ways that she feels related. Her nose curves in a similar downward manner, her ears retain the out down curve without the dangerous point to them. The fur accents of her cheeks add to the roundness, making her feel softer while sharing hawks cheekwings.
Let’s take another example, Bluestar and Snowfur.  They are proof that similarities do not have to be reserved to face shapes alone to give that strong feeling of relatedness. In some ways I think theirs is the strongest sibling bond I’ve read in the books, and that obviously translated to how I designed them haha! The idea behind their design was ‘curvy sturdy’ which is reflected in their circular based hourglass figures emphasizing Bluestar’s ‘broad shoulders’. I tried to make their heads more of a squashed circular shape, to give it more sturdy strength while feeling soft and maternal. Her ears are very rounded at the tips, and the particular downward turn is easy to identify and reflect in both cats. Lastly, their square “pants” because let’s be honest, both these she cats wore the pants in their families. There are also enough differences that in pure silhouette you would still be able to tell Snowfurs bushy tail apart from Bluestar’s thinning fur, and snows’ cheekfluffs from blues wide round jaws.
Tumblr media
Of course I am not perfect at all of these elements, and there are even more things I could say that make designs unique and easily animatable while also identifiable.  If you are looking for more or different suggestions, I liked Tenielle Flowers’ Video she released on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO-kNlyHn8A .
And good luck!

MOTION GRAPHICS - EVALUATION
16th November 2017
This project was an interesting one, as it’s the first collaborative project we’ve properly done!
I did quite a bit of research into the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty itself, including past versions, analysing them to pick out similarities or interesting points and finding the moral of the fairytale; I didn’t do much in terms of visuals or ways of animating: this helped give me a good idea of what to do and what not do do in regards to the story and script, however when it came to the actual graphics I became a little stuck - something I can definitely reflect on for next time!
I did some concept art for how the motion graphic could look, but it ended up being way too complicated, so - under the advise of our tutors - we tried to simplify our graphics as much as we could, to make it both easier for ourselves to animate and so as not to confuse us or the audience, beings as our story was a fairly complicated one and didn’t need anything detracting from it. We had quite a few ideas being suggested that ended up having to be sot down due to not being relevant enough or being too complicated, as we kept having to remind ourselves that we were being graded on continuity, too, and so the motion graphic had to flow and be consistent, in style or movement or colour.  We settled on the style being the primary consistent thing: we all loved Mia’s simple-but-cute character design sketches, and decided to use them as the puppets for our graphic - meaning, even as we animated each beat separately, the characters would remain the same, giving the audience a main focus. We used Illustrator to draw out the assets for the animation - I hadn’t used the program before this project, and was confused with the different shortcuts and tools at first, but as I used it I realised how useful it was: we managed to churn out the assets using it! I’m going to use it more often, so that I can create other aspects of projects more efficiently - not to mention it was a lot easier importing Illustrator files straight into After Effects in order to edit the puppets through them being a separate compositions - it cut out a whole load of faffing about!
From our script, we drew out a series of thumbnails to try and get an idea of what our individual beats could look like - the final clips all ended up being pretty close to the preliminary sketches! Our first animatic was pretty basic, and was made up of the thumbnail sketches - I put the pieces together in After Effects, and did a rough voice recording of my own to put over the top in order to try and get the timing aright - turns out it was pretty bang on! A couple of us made animated tests against the rough recording, and - when we had the actual studio recording - we put it over the tests and it fit almost perfectly - that was a nice surprise! I made the second animatic a fair bit later, near the end of the project, in TV Paint so it was easier to see and was more accurate to the animation: it still wasn’t perfect, and the quality of the drawings within it aren’t brilliant due to the short time I had to do it in, but I think it’s a much more effective animatic than our first one, which only had the barest of detail for each beat. Though, the second animatic isn’t completely accurate either, as we made some last-minute changes regarding transitions and text after seeing how they would be put together and deciding to alter some things so as not to make it too uniform or boring.  Our first script was pretty close to the final one, and the only major edits we made to it was to trim it down and to make sure each beat, for which we all wrote our own passage, was in similar language, ensuring it would flow.  It took a few attempts, but we were eventually able to get the narration to around sixty seconds - fifty without any breaks, so that we had about ten seconds of leeway.
In the beginning, we’d thought about having a female narrator, beings as the story was quite female-centric, before we thought about each person narrating their own beats - we quickly crossed off that idea, however, as we thought it would get far too complicated with having a new voice come in every ten seconds. However, as we went along, Ollie kind of became the one to read through the script after each edit so we could time it, and so eventually was the one to narrate the graphic in the studio. Recording in the studio was really fun; I manned the mixing desk and armed the recording button, and I feel as though my passion for music helped a little in knowing where to edit/listen out for changed in tone or for any small sound that shouldn’t be there. Valentina was also a great help in figuring out where Ollie ought to emphasise, or when and how she should change his tone.   I did some basic editing as we recorded: cutting off any noise, trimming usable tracks, splicing together the sections we wanted into something resembling a voice over - we even had a blooper reel I quickly put together as we went - It was pretty easy, and I really enjoyed it! I took the unedited audio back to the media labs afterwards and finished cutting it so that it fit nicely for the narration: making sure there were no breaths or plosives to distract from the speech or ‘dirty’ the recording.  I’m quite proud with the edit! The timing was really good, flowed form each beat to the next smoothly, with enough of a break between them to insert our transitions, and there were little to no plosives, clicks or breaths to clutter the track. I definitely want to get more experience in the studio - for music as well as the voice acting!
The actual putting together of the animation proved to be a little difficult, as we had to change a few of the beats to be able to have the transitions carry over smoothly, or to have a transition at all. Myself and Eszter struggled to figure out how to do our transition: we knew what we wanted it to look like, however we couldn’t seem to crack how to do it on after Effects. We used quite a few fades in our motion graphic, I think, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though it could easily get quite tiresome or boring to watch - I’m going to try and practice more with After Effects from here on, so that I can experiment with all the different transition effects in order to use them in our next project and avoid overusing the fade/dissolve again.
Overall, the Motion Graphics project was a pretty fair one to introduce us to collaborative work, if stressful nearer the end, and I found it really helpful to work in a group, where we had an array of skill sets - so, where I lacked the ability to use After Effects effectively, they helped me out whilst I instead assisted them with editing sound or by drawing out the animatic.   It was also a pretty short project - only about three weeks - so it made us all very conscious of time, and how we should organise it.  I admit my time management at first wasn't great, what with needing to Finnish my Inanimate Objects project, but towards the end of the project I managed to figure out what could get done faster so as to not clutter up my to-do list, and it all worked out pretty well!
