gradient text tutorial
This tutorial is for @ladynephthyss but y’all can have it too xD
We’ll be adding text so the final gif looks like this:
This tutorial assumes basic knowledge of gif-making, Photoshop, and coloring. I’ve only described the text tutorial in this.
Tutorial under the cut:
Couple things to note beforehand:
There is a lot of trial and error involved when doing any sort of text, and this is no exception! You might have to play around with the colors and the settings before you find something that looks good and readable!
This tutorial is inspired by the difference text effect in these tutorials: one and two by @anya-chalotra (highly recommend checking those out!), just done a different way.
This text effect works better on big gifs (540px width) that have quite a bit of movement below the text so you get that effect.
Find fonts that have bold shapes or some width to them, so you can see the movement.
This is my starting gif, after sharpening and coloring.
First, I position my text where I want it. (this can be moved around later, I just like to get an idea). Remember what I said about fonts? Try to use ones that are thick for this effect so you can see the gradient/movement underneath the letters. I’m using Intro.
It doesn’t matter what color the text is at this stage, I just do white text so I can see it:
Then, add a gradient map in the color you want your text to be. For this one, I chose black and purple. The more contrast there is in your colors, the better it looks. You’ll be able to change this later though, if you don’t like the way it looks.
This is how it looks with the gradient map:
Now, we’re going to go over into our layers panel, and where we have the white box (the layer box), we’re going to select and delete that...
...so it looks like this:
Then, while pressing Ctrl, we’re going to hover our mouse over the T in our text layer. Your cursor should show a white box with a dotted border. Press the T in the text with the specialized cursor, and you should get a dotted line all around the letters, like so:
(I’m not able to get a screenshot of the cursor for some reason but I hope the instruction made it clear!)
Then, make sure you have your gradient map layer selected, and press the layer mask button (shown by a white arrow in the below image - it looks like a white rectangle with a black circle in the middle.)
This is what it should look like:
Right now, it’ll look like some solid color (which depends on your gradient). This is because we still have the text layer visible. Once we press the eye icon next to the actual text layer to hide it, you can see that this is what it looks like:
(You can also delete the text layer, but I don’t, just because if I decide to put these two words on two lines, or change their spacing or whatever, I don’t want to have to make a new layer. I can just edit that one before re-masking.)
As you play your gif, you’ll see that this is what the whole movement looks like:
You can see that the movement of him lifting the glass to drink his tea shows through the text, too. Almost like a weird color X-ray type thing, where the lighter color shows on darker shades of the gif, and the darker color shows on the lighter part of the gif.
Note: sometimes, depending on the way your gradient is made, you might get text that looks like the picture below. Just hit the reverse button (shown with a white arrow), and you should get the text looking like it does above.
This is the basic way to do it. Now, we can easily edit this, if we feel like there’s too much purple and not enough black. To do that, we go into the gradient, and change the slider positions of the colors. This is purely an aesthetic preference, but I’ll show you how to do it below:
For example, I moved those sliders so there’s more black and less purple, and the gradient feels more like two colors only, instead of all the various hues of dark purple/gray-purple.
This is what the gif looks like:
In the gif before this one, the black was more of a muted gray. In the one directly above, you can see that it looks much more striking. So play around with that until you find something you like.
It still doesn’t look very visible to me, so I’m going to add a drop shadow underneath (again, this is a preference thing). You’d do it just like you would with a regular text layer. Right click the Gradient Map layer and select Blending Options. Add a drop shadow.
This is what mine looks like:
And that’s it! You can keep playing around with the whole thing until you’re happy with it. You can even keep changing the color, and the great thing about that is you’ll be able to preview it as you change it to see what works with your scene. For example, I tried white and black text here:
And that’s it! Feel free to drop me an ask if anything’s confusing! Happy giffing!

This all goes under the cut because I need to yell into the void about things in the Witcher s2
FIRST OF ALL YENNEFER
Yennefer's arc this season left me yelling screaming shouting emotionally bereft and incredibly distraught! I've barely slept last night and I still feel everything so this will be incoherent *at best*
What are you when you lose the one thing that distinguished and defined you? The one thing that gave you purpose and is both crutch and cudgel and instrument to the way you navigate the world? I can't tell you how many times I flat out had tears in my eyes because HER LOSS is so palpable and it made my heart ACHE
To answer the question: A RESOURCEFUL MOTHERFUCKER
SHE
SHE DID ALL THOSE THINGS
WITHOUT MAGIC
it's this one little parallel between her and Geralt, who also always tries to find the middle way, and in his case it mostly ends up in tragedy because of his moral shtick (Evil is evil, greater, lesser, middling), BUT OH NO SIR, NOT FOR YEN
YENNEFER SAYS FUCK, MAKES THE BEST OF IT, AND CARVES A THIRD CHOICE FOR HERSELF, SNARLING, SPITTING AND CURSING ALL THE WHILE
her whole journey made me very emotional and it was a WHOLE RIDE
BABE WENT ROGUE and found friends EVERYWHERE in THE UNLIKELIEST OF places
AND IT ENDED IN HER SACRIFICING EVERYTHING FOR CIRI BECAUSE SHE SEES C I R I, WHO IS UNLIKE ANYONE SHE'S EVER MET. CIRI WHO HAS POWER AND FEELS CURSED BECAUSE NOBODY KNOWS WHAT TO DO WITH HER
YENNEFER HOLDS HER FACE AND TELLS HER SHE HAS NOTHING TO APOLOGISE FOR.
Anyway, Yennefer was done dirty and I am very excited for s3 to give her her due and have Geralt groveling for her forgiveness because she deserved better than whatever the fuck Geralt did in the finale.
#twn#the witcher netflix#yennefer of vengerberg#my stuff#the witcher netflix spoilers#tw#anyway i adore yennefer#and between anya chalotra and the writing for most of her arc this has been a Delight and a Joy and I CRIED#but for the life of me i dont understand the writing decisions re: her and geralt in the finale#and i am upset

Hello ! So i know you've talked about racism in the witcher fandom before and i have a question. When reading fics i am struck by the fact that very little fics portray Triss as a woman of color, as she appears in the show and an overwhelming amount portray her as a red head. So my question is this: is it racism or just a general dislike of the show and another sign that fans seem to think that the witcher 3 is the best ?
It’s racism. I am not going to sugarcoat it or say it’s because fans just “prefer” game Triss. They prefer her because of their implicit bias. There is a post about choosing to right in the Netflix Verse but keep Game Triss Here. If there is a fic that is set in the Netflix Verse and uses Jaskier instead of Dandelion, describes Geralt with no beard and as, well, Henry Cavill, and even sometimes, if you are lucky, uses Anya Chalotra as Yennefer but then uses Game Triss? That is making the specific choice to exclude a black character which if most of the fic is set in the Netflix verse, that is a very specific choice rooted in racism, whether on accident or on purpose.
While the game was popular, the fandom didn’t rise-up or become mainstream on Tumblr until the tv show came out. If you want evidence of that, just go look at Tumblr’s 2020 review. They had an entire section for The Witcher, it was #13 on the top 20 things tagged on Tumblr in 2020, Geraskier was the 4th most popular ship out of 100 (Yenralt didn’t even make the list), Jaskier was the 3rd most popular character, Geralt was the 5th, Yennefer was the 24th (yeah there’s a problem here too).
And if you want even MORE evidence of this, here’s tumblr’s year in review for 2019 JUST for video games, not even overall things or fandom. The Witcher isn’t even in the top 50. It also wasn’t on Tumblr year in review in 2018, 2017, or 2016. Before 2020, The Witcher never made it into these lists, the tv show made the fandom we see now.
As well let’s look at some of the fanfiction stats from AO3. 11,805 out of 21,208, aka 56% of Witcher fanfiction is explicitly tagged as the Netflix series. However, I know that many fans like to just use The Witcher - All Media Types tag and not the show one (I know I use that) so let’s look at timeline as well. 18,900 out of 21,208, aka 89% of ALL Witcher fanfiction was written after the show was released. Even if you have tried your gosh-darn best to avoid it, the trope and fandom from the Netflix series have seeped into most people’s perception of The Witcher. So again, re-stating my point, using all the Netflix characters in fanfiction BUT Triss, is anti-blackness, plain and simple.
And a lot of fans online have used the excuse, they aren’t racist, they just don’t think she looks like the character. They say things like “it’s the same thing people said when Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond”...but it’s not. When you say a Black woman doesn’t “look right” for a role you are saying black people have no place in your story. Re-evaluate yourself when you makes those comments and think about the company you are keeping. Because you are keeping company with literal racists who use the same phrases and have the same opinions as you.
A post about some of the backlash actor’s faced here:
Here’s an article about the harassment
Now a Reddit thread about Triss would look better with straight hair
More Reddit
But “Oh” you say, that’s just specific to Reddit, Tumblr would NEVER be racist.
Well here’s a fun collection of posts!
An Artist who draws Racist Caricatures of Triss
A post about how people refuse to talk about fandom racism
How fandom racism isn’t just fiction vs reality
A post about shipping trends being racist (and people harassing OP in the chat)
blank-slate characters and the racial bias they deal with
Specifically a post about Yenralt and Racism (think about those Tumblr ranking while reading this...)
Another post about people refusing to talk about fandom racism
I just gave a few examples but look through the blogs of anyone whose been talking about fandom racism and you will see so many posts and examples.
The Witcher fandom has a racism problem. It’s not just Yennefer or shipping Yenralt. It extends to how the fandom treats Netflix Triss as I have talked about here, it extends to how there’s practically no content or more specifically, engagement for characters of color. It’s about how the fandom keeps pushing POC out to the point where people I love are leaving the fandom because they aren’t welcome here.
If you aren’t willing to listen to POC when they tell you something is racist, when they tell you something is wrong. Fuck off.
I encourage everyone if they haven’t to read the article Who Actually Gets to “Escape” Into Fandom?
#watch me lose followers again over this#since I started posting about fandom racism I have lost over 200 followers#happy to see the racists taking out their own trash by unfollowing#keep up the good work on that#this post is long but it has to be said#so many people fixate on yennefer as the source of ALL fandom racism when they question people's posts#and while yen is the main character and will be talked about the most#racism extends to every part of the fandom#and this post was a lot less nice than others I have made#but I'm feeling a lot less nice#I'm feeling tired#very tired#of all of this and watching people I know leave the fandom and I hate it so much#and no one listens#the witcher#fandom racism#triss#triss merigold#myposts#yennefer

the amazing and inimitable @ladytharen tagged me FOREVER ago, so thank you love for doing so and I’m so sorry it took me so long to do this!
Favorite color: I am SO bad at picking favorites, especially when it’s color and when it depends on my mood, but I probably would say purple overall. A deep reddish purple, specifically.
Currently reading: re-reading “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg. Great book if you’re looking to make some changes in your life.
Last song: Одинокая птица (Lonely Bird) by Nautilus Pompilius. An amazing song by an amazing Russian band. (PS it’s such a good Geraskier song and I’m dying because I want to make stuff with it)
Last series: I’m rewatching Happy Endings, which is SO good and I’m so sad there isn’t really a fandom in it because it’s so funny and I love it so much.
Sweet, spicy, or savory: Either savory or sweet, depending on my cravings. I love spicy food, but my stomach doesn’t recently.
Craving: some hot apple cider with an apple cider donut sprinkled with some sugar. also mango.
Currently working on: my Geraskier Secret Santa gift, a story with @matthewsmurdck & my very first screenplay! :) and all like, my actual work + grading papers which is much less fun
Tagging: anyone who wants to do it (seriously do it, I’m tagging you!) + no pressure to @matthewsmurdck @samwiseyoufool @jemmablossom @lamberts @anya-chalotra @yenvengerberg @antoine-triplett @katara-aang @geraskier-thots @rapidashmascot

✨ IVASHKOVADRIAN’s BYE TO 2020 FOLLOW FOREVER ✨
2020 of the Gregorian calendar is coming to an end and uhm... what a year, to say in the least. Although it’s proven to shower us, including me, with challenges, if there is one thing I am most grateful in this (cursed) year for is tumblr! Hence this follow forever, only my second one after my first in...2014. Not only did tumblr show to be an escape full of laughs, but it has been such a safe and supportive space for me throughout this year, either during the highs or the lows of life. I have gotten to really engage and create for this platform while being absolutely amazed at the talent! And I am so lucky to have talked to and meet absolutely lovely and amazing people! I have gotten to become mutuals with people who have blown me away on numerous occasions. Really, tumblr helped me to push through in general and to try new techniques for edits! 2020 was tough but not all of it was bad: I finished the first draft of my novel! I (re)discovered hobbies! I strengthened bonds with my closest friends despite international distance! And I got my (current) Adrian Ivashkov canon url :’) Those are all bonuses to getting through 2020. To mutuals and followers alike, I wish you all the best for the next year, joy, love, success and health! As the gif portrays, let it be a new pretty sunrise for new beginnings! I couldn’t continue on here without all of you, so thank you for everything and for always being so kind, all of you take extra care 💖 Before I list all the gorgeous people I love on here, there are a few I particularly want to thank (all are incredibly talented!):
@daenrystargaryen : Ana, i love you so much! You have revolutionized tumblr for me. You appeared into my life at a time I was thinking of leaving this site and boy, am I glad I stuck around, all thanks to you <3 we have so many common interests and can be so similar, how is it that we weren’t friends before! you are always so sweet and supportive, and you being my Witcher Secret Santa was THE CHERRY ON TOP OF THE CAKE. I teared up, I was so happy. YOU’RE DOING AMAZING, SWEETIE, ROCK ON AND KEEP ON GOING LIKE THE QUEEN YOU ARE
@keirahknightley : you know when you instantly click with someone? this is exactly what happened with Akrivi. You are a pearl. Look, I want to go to Greece just to meet up with you, and I’ve already been to the country a few times. I love you, and I can’t wait to fangirl with you over our next fixation (how is it that we share so much???)
@korra-of-the-watertribe : my diversity queen Shay. I always love discussing with you! Our opinions? One and the same. Seeing you on my dash is always a delight and you’re never afraid to show you’re “out there”. There are few people I trust with the Martells. You? No hesitation whatsoever. “I like his idea of saying ‘You go, girl’ ironically.” You go, girl. (Abed Nadir, 1X13)
@theclashofqueens : although we’ve literally just started to talk, I already consider you a close friend. You being my giftee for the WSS was such a pleasure, I was so happy you had no idea! You are absolutely LOVELY and I always look forward to our exchanges! Your first message after the reveal had me in tears and wondering if this was real life. “She’s amazing, we share so many interests, I just hope I can make Julia happy with this gifset” and then you did. I ascended to some heaven, I think.
In no particular order, all these amazing people that have accompanied me on this tumblr journey, some for so long and others just for a few days, but I love you all and admire you all for the royalty you are <3:
@anya-chalotra @poirot @fairestcharming @leaveatrail @leroichevalier @maesterleia @daenerys-targaryen @lareinedefer @allisonaergents @yenvengerberg @fairytalespond @thetormentita @martellen @marystewart @timothyolyphant @rubyredwisp @visenyatargaryen @princesselaena @princessofpoldark @qveenofwinter @scinnlaece @viisenya @daynes @hharry @madaboutasoiaf @tragicdeadgirl @rhaella @thelegendofclarke @nightllock @iwillneverletgoipromise @sebastianstaan @achilleius @obatlle @facinaoris @yennefervengerbergs @cassatrix @bluetiefling
And last, people I admire from afar:
@lady-arryn @haticesultanas @henricavyll @ladyeowyn @seance @joannalannister @fitswilliamdarcy @lunaathorne @nobodys @zoewashburne
#follow forever#long post#long text post#THANK YOU ALL I LOVE YOU ALL#i hope i didn't forget anyone but knowing me i probably did#2021 is mere hours away for me so i really am doing this at the last minute#but honestly i am so grateful for tumblr in 2020#take care y'all

Ten Characters from Ten Fandoms
Rules: list your favorite character from 10 different fandoms, then tag 10 people. I was tagged by @airbendertylee (thanks!!!), and it took me that long to choose ten characters...
1) Buffy the Vampire Slayer
She is the one. Buffy Summers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom changed me and my life, to the better. She is my flawed hero.
2) Abbie Mills from Sleepy Hollow
I’ll never stop being angry at what happened to Sleepy Hollow, Abbie Mills, and Nicole Beharie. But still, Abbie Mills is one of the best heroines we got on TV in 21 century. Smart, sarcastic, full of heart and with a drive for justice… We needed her.
3) Andy, also known as Andromache of Scythia, from the Old Guard
The newest – and the oldest of my favorites. In this weird summer of 2020 Andromache of Scythia as played by Charlize Theron become a lesson and a hope that all the fighting for people that seems useless and small brings its fruit for all of us.
4) Dana Scully from X-files
First fandom. No nonsense. Bright mind.
5) Mai from Avatar the Last Airbender
The more I think about her, the more I love her. She is a person of hidden depths. She has learned not to show how deeply she cares, because she knows the price. And sometimes she is willing to pay it. It is easier to show care with actions, not words, but her words sometimes cut deeper than her knives. She likes to eat and makes tea.
6) Lin Beifong from The Legend of Korra .
After Korra, she is my favorite character in the Legend of Korra. And her character arc about re-connecting to the world and her family and making new friends after spending years cutting off all ties is wonderful. And she is a badass fifty year old woman of color.
7) Sister Michael from Derry Girls
Derry Girls is hilarious and kind and full of idiots. There is just one sane character in the whole world, and it’s Sister Michael, and she knows it’s her burden to carry.
8) Edwin Jarvis from Agent Carter
He is a delightful man to watch. A great friend to Peggy Carter, a good husband to Ana, brave, loyal, kind, ready to help with anything, and also to cook.
9) Yennefer from the Witcher books and TV series
I loved her since I read the books back in 90s. And I loved her adaptation in the Netflix series as played by Anya Chalotra. Yennefer is powerful, ambitious, caring, sarcastic, complicated.
10) Melinda May from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
she is awesome.
Tagging: @attackfish, @ajoblotofjunk @mai-fruit-tarts, @dragonlordette, @virologistandpotato, @idkmybffgill, @maiisbuns, @postmortemballet, @knight-of-flannels and anyone else who wants to do it.

Name: Felicity “Lis” Artyomov Species: Human Occupation: Psychiatry Resident Age: 28 Years Old Played By: Misha Face Claim: Anya Chalotra
“It’s funny; No one wanted to talk to me before this residency, now people pay for an hour of my time. I feel like, without this job, I wouldn’t have any human contact at all.”
Felicity was born blue, backwards, and completely silent. A hush had fallen over the hospital room when she’d first arrived, mimicking the quiet place from which she’d come. This was the beginning of her uneasy earthside; her umbilical cord had been wrapped around her neck, and her transition into life paralleled that of death. She was the second twin, and it was not the reunion her little soul had anticipated.
As the twins got older, Felicity quickly developed into a tiny nihilist. Reality was taken at face value, and the pessimist gave Nietzsche a run for his money. Maybe it was her parent’s messy divorce, or the long custody battle. The girl didn’t have a positive bone in her entire body. Her brother Alix was the absolute opposite; he was warm, optimistic, and incredibly trusting. It was easy for him to make friends. In highschool, as Alix became popular, Felicity fell down the social totem pole. The loneliness hurt, but she told herself she was fine. She knew she was a little “too direct” for most people, and it took them a while to understand her. Instead she kept to herself and buried her head in her school work and the books that she loved to re-read. Madame Bovary, Wuthering Heights, and Anna Karenina had made the list and she absolutely loved to hate them. From those novels, and from the example of her mother’s very messy love life, she decided that love was created for selfish people, and everyone who partook would pay their terrible dues in the end. Though incredibly dramatic, she decided that those books were the most literal depiction of what love was. Everyone ends up miserable and dead.
It was her youth that created her interest in psychiatry. From years of seeing a child psychologist, paired with her social limitations, Felicity wanted to understand her fellow man. She was adamant that she knew herself and what sort of person she was, sure from a very young age, and she wanted to work in a field that would allow her to inquire beyond that. Desperate to connect with others, she’d created a bit of a reputation in her last town for overstepping boundaries. It was a massive flaw of hers- She was always too involved. It almost cost her her job.
Now, beginning her residency in White Crest, she’s found the opportunity to do what she loves. Her patients in town are strange, to say the least. To say they were complicated would be a total understatement, but Felicity can’t quite put her finger on what it is that makes everyone in White Crest so bizarre. Her years in University haven’t prepared her for the types of people she’s encountered in her new town. She finds the challenge fascinating, but she doesn’t realize that she’s in way over her head. Her interest in the townsfolk of White Crest might yet again cost her her job, or worse, her life.
Character Facts:
Personality: Stubborn, loyal, nihilistic, pretentious, inquisitive, introverted
Felicity is a great listener- she’s also great at prying. She’ll be very invasive with patients, mostly due to her massive lack of social skills. She isn’t good with boundaries, which has potential for getting her in trouble.
She sees the world in black and white. She’s a realist. She doesn’t believe in anything supernatural.
She hasn’t talked to her mother since she was 16, and her relationship with her twin brother has been strained since they went separate ways for college. Her father died when she was 19.
She desperately wants to be normal. She’s always felt like she was put together wrong. She tries very hard to blend in, despite her social inadequacies.

The Witcher
So I’ve watched the first season of the Witcher on Netflix and all I can say is holy motherfucking shit. That was a good season.
I wanted to jot down a few things that I liked about the season, bearing in mind that I haven’t yet read the books and have only played the Witcher 2 and 3. I will be using spoilers so consider this a spoiler warning.
(Also this will be a long post)
OK? OK
Henry Cavill
When Henry was announced I gotta admit I had some doubts over the casting. Not because I don’t rate him as an actor but I just couldn't picture him as Geralt. My personal pick was Zach McGowan, known for playing Charles Vane in Black Sails. He had the gruff voice, he looked like the game version of Geralt, and he even had similar hair. Just dye it white and he was good.
But having seen the show... I recant every syllable of my foolishness.
Henry Cavill is perfect as Geralt. He perfectly embodies the White Wolf. From his sarcastic sense of humour, to the subtle emotion on his face to the conflict he has while making the decisions he does. Absolutely perfect casting.
Anya Chalotra
Speaking of perfect casting, Anya is an incredible Yennefer of Vengerberg. Like Henry she perfectly embodies Yennefer. Anya plays the evolution of Yen superbly, from her beaten down and almost broken early days to the immensely powerful and confident sorceress she becomes later, she performs both absolutely perfectly.
And to all those who say that Anya is wrong to play Yennefer because she doesn’t “look like her”.... I cannot say shut the hell up loud enough. She was incredible and deserves all the accolades that should be sent her way.
Freya Allan
And rounding out the three main characters, the show is three for three in terms of perfect casting. I loved her independent and driven nature, continuing to keep going on despite all the trouble going her way despite only been about 11 or 12 (i think, not 100%). Her strong bond with both Queen Calanthe and Mousesack is evident, despite the relative lack of screentime devoted to it. I can’t wait to see how both the character and actress evolves over the (hopefully) seasons to come.
Geralt and Ciri
I loved the “the girl in the woods will be with you always” transition in the first episode, that eventually came full circle in the finale with the two finally meeting (with the run and hug scene!). Having seen their bond fully established in the games (I know they aren’t canon) I cant wait to see it develop on screen
Queen Calanthe
Is a badass. End of story. Ruling a kingdom, fighting at the front of every battle, effectively flipping off destiny and law of Surprise and being an incredible role model for Ciri. Absolute awesome character and Jodhi May did such an incredible job playing her.
Yennefer’s backstory
As a game only fan in terms of knowing much about the characters when I went into this season, my knowledge of Yen’s backstory was pretty much nonexistent, as I can’t remember it even being mentioned in the two games I played (of which Yen was only physically present for one). However, the show delved deep into it, and I’m glad they did. It simultaneously made us empathise fully with Yennefer but also established the basis for her desire to grow stronger and be in control of her own destiny and future, and why she was then so frustrated being in the mire of courtly intrigue, not able to grow higher.
The Yennefer and Tissaia dynamic
One of the most unexpected but welcome events of the show was the dynamic that they two shared. It was not the typical mentor and apprentice relationship and I appreciated the change from the norm. From Tissaia’s initial attempts to bring Yennefer to heel before eventually being the one to tell Yennefer to unleash her chaos during the battle at Sodden was great.
The striga episode
I mean..... just wow. As soon as they mentioned Temeria I had a feeling that it would be the striga, as it was one of the few things that I knew about from the books. And holy shit they did not disappoint. From the investigation aspect, to the fight scene, to the music. It was incredible episode and one that I cannot wait to get back to when I re-watch the series
Battle of Sodden
The main focus of the incredible finale. I had heard of the Battle of Sodden during the games but to see it was something else. A great battle scene combined great fights, solid battle plans and incredibly cool magical skills. And also, during the night scenes, you could actually see what the fuck was happening. See GoT! It isn't hard!!
Vilgevortz
As soon as his name was revealed in the episode, I’m not gonna lie but i may have gone full fanboy. I know a little from what was mentioned in the books and have read a little from other sources about his story in the books and was immensely excited when he showed up. And I cannot wait to see his story unfold on the show and see him interact more with Yennefer and meet Geralt and Ciri.
Jaskier
From what I know, calling him Jaskier (his original name in the Polish stories) instead of the English name of Dandelion was one of the problems people had with the show. And I have to ask... does it really matter? He still acts like him, talks like him, annoys Geralt like him. He is the same character, the showrunners are just honouring his roots.
And he brought some comic relief to the series in just the right ways, especially in the djinn and dragon hunt episodes. Joey Batey was great.
Music and Cinematography
Both of them were absolutely fantastic. Every episode looked and sounded phenomenal. I’ve been listening to a few tracks from the soundtrack that have made it onto YouTube on repeat for a while, most notably “Toss a Coin to your Witcher”. However, one track that I really liked but haven't been able to find is the battle theme from the striga fight. If anyone could send me a link to it, I would be incredibly grateful
Fight choreography
All of the fights this season were absolutely fantastic. Both the human fights and the monster battles. Geralt and Duny vs the Cintrian soldiers, Vilgevortz vs Cahir and (my personal favourites) Geralt vs Renfri and her gang from episode 1. All of them superb and I couldn't have asked for more from the fight scenes.
Magic
I really like the magic system they set up in this series. Not only is it incredibly diverse (with the finale alone showing us Vilgevortz constantly creating swords, Triss making poison mushrooms grow beneath the feet of the army and Coral wiping out a whole section of the Nilgaardian army) but I really like the idea that it isn't just them tapping into a great power, that there can be a great cost to performing these spells. Not something that a lot of fantasy series do.
Cahir
He was a great antagonist throughout the season and again I know little in specifics about him but I know that he is important to Ciri’s story, so I am looking forward to seeing that develop further.
Geralt and Visenna
I loved the scene of the two of them in the finale, even if it proved to only be a dream/hallucination. The “How do you like my eyes?” line legit gave me chills. Incredible acting by Henry there
Geralt and Yennefer (Yenneralt?, I think certain parts of the fandom have settled upon)
Now, as a game only fan prior to this, my exposure to the relationship between the two of them was limited, as the games only touched upon it in the Witcher 3. Before then it was told that Geralt and Yennefer had an epic love but it was very much tell and don’t show, as Yennefer didn't appear in person until the Witcher 3 and by then CDPR had developed the Geralt and Triss romance story in the Witcher 2. And I’m not gonna lie, I was fully into their romance during my playthroughs. Not that I didn't like Yennefer but I just didn't have the same basis into their bond that the book fans did.
After Season 1, however, I am fully onto the Geralt and Yennefer ship, having seen it develop as it did.
Methinks it may be time for another playthrough, as well as buying the books.
Things I’m looking forward to seeing on the show in the future
1. Yennefer and Ciri meeting
2. Seeing Geralt and Ciri bonding more, with some time together at Kaer Morhen
3. Thanedd Island (eventually)
4. Zoltan!
5. Regis!
6. Vesemir!

You mentioned the witcher, so now I'm curious what do you think of the book Vs the TV series (Netflix or the original polish)?
It got a little longer than I intended so I’m putting it behind the “read more”.
I watched the Netflix series a couple of years after I read the books so I didn’t remember a lot of things. And I usually try to watch TV series/movies based on books as a separate thing anyway so I won’t get disappointed with all the things from the book they changed or didn’t include.
I know the Polish series the least since I was too young to watch it when it came out so I’ve only seen re-runs and a few episodes online. Some things aged like milk in my opinion but I think it gets more hate than it deserves.
The books are obviously more detailed and have this, I don’t know, vibe to them that I love. It’s hard to put them down. Maybe it’s just nostalgia but they’re still really fun to read. 😅 And I’m excited to see how some of the stuff from later parts are approached in future seasons of the series.
Because the Netflix series was cool! It sure had a way bigger budget than the original one so it was more, you know, wow! It was also one of the very few series I watched with Polish dubbing because I really liked the fact that Geralt’s voice was Michał Żebrowski who played Geralt in the original series. So soon I’ll probably watch the original voices and try to spot the differences in some scenes I’ve heard about. But I’m weirdly happy that Jaskier is called Jaskier in both versions. 😅
I know some fans were angry at the things they changed or the casting but looking at it as a separate thing based on the same story really made it more fun to watch. Would I like some stuff to be more like the original? Maybe, but I never suspected them to transfer the whole book onto the screen and I think what they did with it was still very entertaining. And I’m so happy it allows that story to reach an even bigger audience.
Also, I finally understood why so many people had a crush on Yennefer because of Anya Chalotra.
#how did it get so long?#thank you for the ask!#sorry for rambling#i don't know if it makes sense i just sort of wrote without thinking slskdlsjo#ask#storyscaped

I should have written this earlier when Witcher Netflix was more fresh in my mind (I haven't done a proper rewatch yet) but I still wanted to write a post about some thoughts I had (that I actually remember lol) and stuff I want in the next season. It's like 99% about Geralt/Yen/Ciri bc I have three brain cells and they're dedicated to them.
The spoiler-free stuff: I definitely loved it! There's some scenes in the book that I would have loved to have seen on screen that I'll mention later, but I really liked it for the most part. My main issue is the pacing, but I understand them trying to fit so much into only 8 episodes -- I hope next season will have at least 10 or even 12 eps to fully flesh out the storylines. There were times where I wondered how easy it was to follow if you didn't know the books, and it seems that it's kinda been mixed? But all-in-all people are loving it, there's lots of memes and new content, and I'm happy about that.
Yennefer's backstory and Anya Chalotra were the highlights for me, and I loved Tissaia as well. By "I haven't done a proper rewatch" I mean that I've only rewatched the first ep (Renfri ❤️) and the parts with Geralt/Yennefer lmao. I'll prob watch it all again later on. Now to the spoilery stuff (includes some refs to the books):
Some specific stuff I liked:
Geralt finally being able to sleep in the Last Wish episode and then him saying in the next ep that before he met Yen, "nights were restless" so she/the thought of her helps him sleep now? lol
Yen touching Geralt's face after he tells her she's important to him as if she can't believe she's important to someone right then and needs to make sure he's real or that she's not dreaming 😭
Téa and Véa and how they actually talked instead of not really communicating well themselves in the books
Yen's elven blood being emphasized and it being a thing that allows her to be naturally inclined towards magic…idek I'm just into that lmao
Geralt "hm"-ing all the time was excellent and is, unfortunately, v relatable
I wasn't gonna say this but since I posted about his casting on my blog previously…I'm still not a fan of Henry but I cannot deny his knowledge and dedication to Geralt and the Witcher lore, and I think he portrayed Geralt very well to the point where I don’t think I imagine anyone else playing the role now? I really mean this bc before I refused to reblog/tweet anything with him in it bc I’m petty LMAO
This is obvious but Toss a Coin to Your Witcher is the song of the year and Her Sweet Kiss is also good. @ netflix soundtrack WHEN
Some stuff I have issues with:
Istredd getting an expanded storyline is fine with me (and will probably set up better angst) but I wish he didn't do the thing Geralt does in Thanedd where he thinks about things Yen likes…I guess that's minor by itself, but Geralt thinking about the house in Thanedd is so important and I hope at least they keep that for the future. Also making the imaginary sorcerers Yennefer conjured up clap like in Thanedd is like…ok I'll allow it but Thanedd better be Extra Good bc I remember reading the part where they're in bed again when I wanted to make myself upset lmao
I wish we got the line when Geralt first called Yennefer "Yen" because "nobody's ever called me that. Say it again" is SO POWERFUL and I think that would have helped set up Geralt/Yen better in the series. Anya did describe the relationship as "animalistic and full of lust" and honestly that's fair but I also want people to understand why tf I'm smiling when we watch them fuck after the last wish instead of being like "ok but where did this come from" lmao. Yeah they’re horny af but pls!!!
Tbh I just want more Angst...like in the Bounds of Reason ep, the "you left" thing and Geralt asking for forgiveness was so short and would have been better if they just…expanded on it a little more…idek this is where I really wished they had an extra episode or two just to elaborate :/
The lack of baby dragon is so sad tbh. I liked that they did without Yen getting her titties exposed and threatened with rape obviously but the baby dragon running over to Yen tho!!
Ciri is my sweet child whom I love dearly and I understand her storyline but I wasn't super into her parts in a way? It makes sense since she's running and hiding and I felt her panic and loneliness and all that, but I think this could have only been fixed if they did Brokilon like in the books. I guess they'd have to cut down on Calanthe maybe?
As for the "Who is Yennefer?" ending:
I know many book readers weren't super satisfied with this, since ofc this is the famous "you're something more" scene, but I think it's fine within the context of the show because of the way Brokilon was handled (obviously I would have liked to see Geralt + Ciri interactions so we could have gotten “something more” though). It also sets up a connection between Yen + Ciri early on -- not really a strong one, but a connection nonetheless. And ofc it makes sense to people who don't know the books, and this is an adaptation after all.
I wish it wasn't as abrupt though? The fact that Ciri's first words to Geralt were about Yennefer is kind of a weird, but I guess that Ciri's vision was so vivid she couldn't help it maybe? And her mentioning Yennefer after Geralt talked about being linked by destiny enforces that it's all three of them linked.
I think this ending line allows for flashbacks via communication? Like if Geralt were to tell Ciri about Yen (and Yen telling Ciri about Geralt), they could elaborate on the relationship between Geralt/Yennefer that way and maybe have a flashback episode or at least a few scenes. I don’t really imagine Geralt saying too much about Yen but still?
So that takes us to things I want in the next season (not exhaustive; I need to do a BoE re-read):
The Dear Friend letter!!
And obviously before that, Triss staying at Kaer Morhen for a while…I wouldn't mind if they completely wrote out any attraction she had to Geralt ofc, but Ciri being sure that Triss is "not Geralt's woman" is also good
Imagine Ciri reading Yennefer's mind and accidentally seeing her thoughts about Geralt…not that she'd even need to though, as long as Yen tells Ciri that Geralt's hands are very gentle is enough lmao. But I'd love the "what is there between you and Geralt" line! In general, I really want Yen/Geralt to be like, the most obvious thing to the audience lol.
Yen telling Ciri that she's lucky bc Ciri knows that Geralt will come back for her and Yen isn't sure that Geralt would do the same for her 😭
Since they're doing the story with Nivellen, I'm hoping for other short stories to be adapted too. My favourite is A Shard of Ice, and I read that it's Henry's favourite too so I'm optimistic about it being included somehow. And since Istredd has a bigger role, it could work? ALSO WE NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT THE UNICORN. PLEASE
Flashbacks to Belleteyn (is having another orgy scene ok. pls say yes) and the Geralt seeing that the 14th name on the hill wasn't Yennefer. He wanted to die again ahhhhhhh
Yarpen asking Geralt "is [Ciri] yours?"
More Jaskier songs about Geralt/Yen…even just one pls
And more angst bc like. There's so much come on lmao hurt the audience
A lot of Yennefer + Ciri. Just a Lot of it.
#untaintedtext#sorry this is long bc i can't keep things short lmao#the witcher#the witcher spoilers#tagging bc i'm lonely bc i creep instead of interacting LMAO#it's long tho i don't expect ppl to read it haha#but it's still time for Sam's Opinion#anyway @ all my friends and followers hi have you see the witcher yet

@jilyandbambi
reblogged your
post
:
lol I had to go back and copy the rest of my tags...
Oh for sure, re: Geralt. Putting other people, regardless of whether they are also abusive, through this pedestal/broken pedestal cycle is par for the course. She has no other frame of reference for relating to people. She has to be constantly vigilant and questioning whether people’s professed affections for her are real, so she can anticipate the rejection or abuse she believes is always coming to her. She even feels somewhat triumphant, despite the pain, when people “prove her right” by abandoning, abusing, or rejecting her (even if it’s just her perception), because it confirms all the terrible stuff about herself that she’s internalized all these years. Anya Chalotra is an amazing actress, because in that scene with her and Geralt on the mountain, you actually see that expression on her face, hear it in her voice. She’s in pain, but a part of her also seems to be like “Ha! I was right! I knew nobody could really love me!”.
