Torna finalmente The Witcher, una tra le serie più viste e apprezzate di Netflix, tratta dai romanzi di Andrzej Sapkowski, con Henry Cavill giunge a un punto focale della narrazione.

The Witcher 3, che ricordiamo è anche l'ultima stagione con Cavill nel ruolo di Geralt di Rivia, personaggio che sarà poi interpretato da Liam Hemsworth a partire dalla quarta stagione, proseguendo poi almeno fino alla già annunciata quinta. Un ritorno che ha comunque confermato la bontà di svariati elementi produttivi così come l'inadeguatezza di alcune soluzione narrative o visive dello show, che si presenta in buona forma ma senza particolari sorprese.

Politica e inganni nel Continente

Ciri (Freya Allan) è il cuore pulsante delle azioni politiche che muovono le fila del Continente da Nilfgaard alla Redania, coinvolgendo anche in modo significativo Aretuza e il concilio degli stregoni. È nel finale della scorsa stagione che scoprivamo la discendenza ancestrale della ragazza, ora braccata a Nord da Re Vizimir e dalla sua intelligence redaniana guidata da Dijkstra (Graham McTavish) e dalla maga Philippa (Cassie Clare) e a sud dall'Imperatore Emhyr var Emreis (Bart Edwards) e dalle truppe elfiche degli Scoia'tel di Francesca (Mecia Simson). Si muove invece nell'ombra una terza forza oscura che tenta di rovesciare l'ordine del Continente partendo dal sangue di Ciri e a capo del Mago del Fuoco sfigurato Rience (Chris Fulton).Nel mezzo il tentativo di Geralt e Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) di riappacificarsi e proteggere Ciri, insegnandole contemporaneamente la via degli Witcher e quella della magia per rendere ancora più forte e caparbia.

Se da una parte risulta importante l'aspetto relazionale e familiare relativo ai tre protagonisti, è però vero che il cosiddetto engagement narrativo è quasi interamente rintracciabile nella caccia al padrone di Rience, che allacciandosi alla storia di Ciri crea il miglior intrigo spy-thriller di stampo fantasy visto finora nella trasposizione di The Witcher. Il problema in questo senso è di ritmo, non riuscendo la terza stagione a bilanciare adeguatamente le macchinazioni politiche fatte di confronti, inganni e rivelazioni (le migliori) con quelle più intime che vivono di romanticismo o discussioni.

In merito è funzionale il rapporto padre-madre-figlia tra Geralt, Yennefer e Ciri, quasi fosse strutturato come un altro piccolo tassello di un più lungo e articolato coming of age, ma delude ad esempio l'arco di Ranuncolo (Joey Batey), la cui presenza - comunque godibile - risulta spesso forzata e fuori contesto, così come determinate scelte drammaturgiche a lui correlate. Resta il sollievo comico della produzione e punta a diventare anche elemento essenziale d'inclusività. Si nota però la maturità concettuale della serie e un tracciato che sembra volersi dedicare di più agli intrighi di corte e meno al fantastico a tutto tondo, riducendo per forza di cose (forse anche per questioni di budget) l'elemento più action, mainstream e di genere di The Witcher, vero tasto dolente della stagione e probabile pomo della discordia alla base dell'addio di Cavill.

Il paradosso principale di The Witcher 3 risiede in un recupero più fedele del materiale originale di Sapkowski che non incontra però l'anima più combattiva, energica e spietata dello stesso, tradendolo comunque. Arrivati alla terza stagione, la serie sembra infatti essere diventata un fantasy in costume che rinuncia spesso e volentieri a momenti gore e più divertenti per nutrirsi di altro, cercando addirittura una via d'elevazione verso una qualità superiore che non potrà mai raggiungere senza bilanciare le parti in campo. Sono appena quattro i combattimenti realmente degni di nota che vedono in azione Geralt, Yennefer o Ciri, e appena due quelli più lunghi e ben coreografati, entrambi nel primo episodio, motivo che abbassa gradualmente vigore e impatto dello show.

La caccia e i mostri che nelle precedenti stagioni avevano un loro spazio anche in appassionanti plot verticali sono adesso fagocitati per intero della trama orizzontale, integrati a volte maldestramente e brevemente in alcuni passaggi narrativi senza troppo entusiasmo, pur essendo le creazioni in CGI migliori e più credibili dell'intera produzione, che a volte mostra il fianco a immagini posticce - a causa del fin troppo visibile green screen - o a sequenze editate con superficialità (c'è una corsa a cavallo di Ciri davvero improponibile). In tutto ciò, la fisicità di Cavill e gli scontri all'arma bianca sono quanto di meglio la serie abbia da offrire in tema d'azione, rendendo quindi incisivo quest'ultimo ritorno dell'attore nei panni di Geralt, ancora una volta convincente, atletico e preparato.

La recitazione gioca un ruolo più importante nelle dinamiche della stagione rispetto al passato, motivo per cui tendono a distinguersi anche gli interpreti migliori come Graham McTavish e la bravissima Anya Chalotra, che restituisce ogni briciolo d'emozione e carisma al personaggio di Yennefer.

Conclusioni

In conclusione, The Witcher 3 trova la sua maturità concettuale in uno sviluppo da fantasy in costume ricco di relazioni e intrighi politici o di corte, scoprendo però il fianco a una più marcata mancanza d'azione e divertimento di genere, tra tinte horror e gore. Henry Cavill si dimostra ancora una volta un perfetto Geralt di Rivia, motivo che contribuirà a farlo rimpiangere ancora più del dovuto in futuro nonostante la fiducia riposta in Liam Hemsworth. Una stagione che non può dirsi in definitiva deludente ma con molti più problemi di ritmo ed equilibrio formale o narrativo rispetto al passato.

She willingly left the foster care system at 16, jumped couches for a while, and ended up meeting her best friend. Their best friend let Sabine live with them for years, helping them get a job, and overall sort out her life. At 19, Sabine met her ex-girlfriend Priscilla who manipulated Sabine into completely cutting off her old friend and putting her down a dark path. I imagined that her friend tried to reach out to her a lot, but it turned out completely useless, maybe having some dramatic last encounter, or a low collapse into hopelessness. Anyway, the friend eventually moved to Cardinal Hill, leaving Sabine one last note that she found years later. After Priscilla left Sabine, she found the note and moved to Cardinal Hill to reconnect with her friend. I don’t imagine their relationship to be perfectly fixed again, but they would definitely be glad that Sabine reached out when she arrived in Cardinal Hill. The friend dosen’t know exactly what happened to Sabine, but they can tell it was very bad and definitely drug related.

i've been meaning to write about these two for ages and i'm glad someone actually started the conversation.

as much as Rosamund Pike's and Anya Chalotra's performances are both incredible (look: they pushed me to actually read the original materials and now i've finished the witcher's books and have already made re-read and i am already book 4 of wot in just a year) I resent both plot change. I'm certainly not against diving into the struggle and trauma of losing one's power. i found it interesting and might bring new themes into the series (if it stays true to the lore!)

But what i actually find so sad about these two cases is that Moiraine and Yennefer are rare character types (and by that i mean women character types). Both very good in their craft, stubborn in their values, they are written so as you might find them arrogant and will probably not relate to them. They act coldly most of the time. They seem to be selfish, care very little to how they might hurt people's feeling but at their core they want to protect someone/something so badly they will do anything and will potentially view themselves as less important/ not care if they get hurt. And even though I just stated i resent the change, I also see the struggle of adapting this kind of character (women! again i think that's important) to the screen without making them sociopath or straight evil characters (and falling into white and black / good and bad narrative)

If I had a nickel for every time there was a fantasy show that took away the main female magic user's powers in the 2nd season in a plot point that wasn't in the book and explored their trauma in what losing it meant to them and had mixed to negative reactions by fans, but personally made me like them better than their book counterparts because of how relatable it made them and how amazing the actresses performances are I would have two nickles, which isn't a lot, but I sure am glad that it happened

Yennefer's arc this season left me yelling screaming shouting emotionally bereft and incredibly distraught! I've barely slept last night and I still feel everything so this will be incoherent *at best*

What are you when you lose the one thing that distinguished and defined you? The one thing that gave you purpose and is both crutch and cudgel and instrument to the way you navigate the world? I can't tell you how many times I flat out had tears in my eyes because HER LOSS is so palpable and it made my heart ACHE

To answer the question: A RESOURCEFUL MOTHERFUCKER

gradient text tutorial

This tutorial is for @ladynephthyss​​ but y’all can have it too xD

We’ll be adding text so the final gif looks like this:

This tutorial assumes basic knowledge of gif-making, Photoshop, and coloring. I’ve only described the text tutorial in this.

Couple things to note beforehand:

There is a lot of trial and error involved when doing any sort of text, and this is no exception! You might have to play around with the colors and the settings before you find something that looks good and readable!

This tutorial is inspired by the difference text effect in these tutorials: one and two by @anya-chalotra​ (highly recommend checking those out!), just done a different way.

This text effect works better on big gifs (540px width) that have quite a bit of movement below the text so you get that effect.

Find fonts that have bold shapes or some width to them, so you can see the movement.

This is my starting gif, after sharpening and coloring.

First, I position my text where I want it. (this can be moved around later, I just like to get an idea). Remember what I said about fonts? Try to use ones that are thick for this effect so you can see the gradient/movement underneath the letters. I’m using Intro. 

It doesn’t matter what color the text is at this stage, I just do white text so I can see it:

Then, add a gradient map in the color you want your text to be. For this one, I chose black and purple. The more contrast there is in your colors, the better it looks. You’ll be able to change this later though, if you don’t like the way it looks. 

This is how it looks with the gradient map:

Now, we’re going to go over into our layers panel, and where we have the white box (the layer box), we’re going to select and delete that...

...so it looks like this:

Then, while pressing Ctrl, we’re going to hover our mouse over the T in our text layer. Your cursor should show a white box with a dotted border. Press the T in the text with the specialized cursor, and you should get a dotted line all around the letters, like so: 

(I’m not able to get a screenshot of the cursor for some reason but I hope the instruction made it clear!)

Then, make sure you have your gradient map layer selected, and press the layer mask button (shown by a white arrow in the below image - it looks like a white rectangle with a black circle in the middle.)

This is what it should look like:

Right now, it’ll look like some solid color (which depends on your gradient). This is because we still have the text layer visible. Once we press the eye icon next to the actual text layer to hide it, you can see that this is what it looks like:

(You can also delete the text layer, but I don’t, just because if I decide to put these two words on two lines, or change their spacing or whatever, I don’t want to have to make a new layer. I can just edit that one before re-masking.)

As you play your gif, you’ll see that this is what the whole movement looks like:

You can see that the movement of him lifting the glass to drink his tea shows through the text, too. Almost like a weird color X-ray type thing, where the lighter color shows on darker shades of the gif, and the darker color shows on the lighter part of the gif.

Note: sometimes, depending on the way your gradient is made, you might get text that looks like the picture below. Just hit the reverse button (shown with a white arrow), and you should get the text looking like it does above.

This is the basic way to do it. Now, we can easily edit this, if we feel like there’s too much purple and not enough black. To do that, we go into the gradient, and change the slider positions of the colors. This is purely an aesthetic preference, but I’ll show you how to do it below:

For example, I moved those sliders so there’s more black and less purple, and the gradient feels more like two colors only, instead of all the various hues of dark purple/gray-purple. 

This is what the gif looks like:

In the gif before this one, the black was more of a muted gray. In the one directly above, you can see that it looks much more striking. So play around with that until you find something you like. 

It still doesn’t look very visible to me, so I’m going to add a drop shadow underneath (again, this is a preference thing). You’d do it just like you would with a regular text layer. Right click the Gradient Map layer and select Blending Options. Add a drop shadow.

This is what mine looks like:

And that’s it! You can keep playing around with the whole thing until you’re happy with it. You can even keep changing the color, and the great thing about that is you’ll be able to preview it as you change it to see what works with your scene. For example, I tried white and black text here:

✨ IVASHKOVADRIAN’s BYE TO 2020 FOLLOW FOREVER ✨

2020 of the Gregorian calendar is coming to an end and uhm... what a year, to say in the least. Although it’s proven to shower us, including me, with challenges, if there is one thing I am most grateful in this (cursed) year for is tumblr! Hence this follow forever, only my second one after my first in...2014. Not only did tumblr show to be an escape full of laughs, but it has been such a safe and supportive space for me throughout this year, either during the highs or the lows of life. I have gotten to really engage and create for this platform while being absolutely amazed at the talent! And I am so lucky to have talked to and meet absolutely lovely and amazing people! I have gotten to become mutuals with people who have blown me away on numerous occasions. Really, tumblr helped me to push through in general and to try new techniques for edits! 2020 was tough but not all of it was bad: I finished the first draft of my novel! I (re)discovered hobbies! I strengthened bonds with my closest friends despite international distance! And I got my (current) Adrian Ivashkov canon url :’) Those are all bonuses to getting through 2020. To mutuals and followers alike, I wish you all the best for the next year, joy, love, success and health! As the gif portrays, let it be a new pretty sunrise for new beginnings! this was fun!! i never thought i’d re-download an episode of grey’s anatomy to gif it but here we are. the first two gifs are from my previous blog (leo-suter) which i left like two/three years ago i think?? using some from july 2020 didn’t make much sense lol anyways look at that shit 🤮 the coloring 🤮 the speed 🤮 the size 🤮 ugh thank god i learned how to properly gif
