Please discuss the aesthetics of “Kokobop” MV:

The time has finally come! 🌴🍔 Here’s a big old gif post on the aesthetics of EXO’s Kokobop - as requested by Lay Anon! I warn you - it’s LONG. Thats what she said. 

Hopefully it’s been long enough that you can all stand reading about everyones favourite longest running cb omg I thought it would never end and I was only there for the last few months Kokobop!

ALIENS FALLEN TO EARTH

I wanted to first mention that I won’t talk too much about the whole EXOplanet narrative as contained within Kokobop. Mainly because its pretty simple and there’s not...er, a lot to it? please dont @ me

As with other EXO MVs the members assigned powers are demonstrated in Kokobop, and as far as we can all tell this MV talks about them ‘falling to earth’ and discovering/re-discovering their powers. 

I think in Kokobop this is mainly used to make the MV a little more dynamic and colourful, as well as to continue the larger EXO narrative. We see it expressed in each of the members solo scenes, and while it makes the MV quite cute I don’t think it adds a lot aesthetically aside from marking the MV as thoroughly contemporary - hooking into meme culture and adding to the general high colour/summer aspect of the MV. 

FILM INFLUENCES:

I’d argue that there are two films that were highly influential (either directly or through cultural osmosis) on Kokobop’s look/aesthetic. The first is the 1975 Australian cult classic, Picnic at Hanging Rock. 

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK

Picnic at Hanging Rock is a film by Peter Weir (based on a supposedly true story) about a group of Australian school girls who go on a field trip to a local mountain (Hanging Rock) to have a picnic - the main focus being on the fact that several of the girls went missing (and were never found) after separating from the larger group. 

Picnic is highly influential in films that discuss female relationships, as well as being influential for its look and feel. Its set in the high Australian summer, so the majority of the film takes place in nature. Despite this bright, sunny aesthetic, the film is actually incredibly haunting and even scary. Its a mystery, and the use of bright nature is a clever foil for the dark occurrences happening within the narrative. 

Kokobop is a highly natural MV of course, being set in a field amongst trees, as well as large portions being shot in a forest. It is not just this natural setting that gives off Picnic vibes however, rather its the mysterious, supernatural aspects of Kokobop: who are these men with these insane powers? What is in that blue drink? Why are they all passed out (fallen to earth) in the grass?

As well as this the focus on EXO as a happy, playful group in nature also links it to Picnic. The shots of the boys in their sub units (Kyungsoo & Chen/Xiumin & Sehun) are also incredibly suggestive of the close same-sex relationships present in Picnic, as well as in the other filmic reference...

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES

The Virgin Suicides (1999), directed by Sofia Coppola is a film (based on the book of the same name by Jeffery Eugenides) about a group of boys who idolise (and fantasise about) a family of sisters (’the Lisbon sisters’) who live in their neighbourhood.

Whilst the film follows the girls’ lives it is actually narrated by one of the boys who is recalling his obsession years later - as an adult. It’s no spoiler (its in the title) that all of the girls end up committing suicide, leaving the boys distraught and eternally traumatised by their love and fixation on them. The girls are trapped forever in the boys’ memories of them, forever young, forever beautiful, forever haunting.

Whilst Virgin Suicides has a very iconic aesthetic it’s important to note that Sofia Coppola took a great amount of references from Picnic at Hanging Rock to make the film (see above and below for just one of many), as well as the two films sharing a narrative about peoples obsession with the beauty and mysterious nature of girls - especially girls who have been lost. Both films are beautiful films to watch yet both are also quite sad. 

I think Virgin Suicides was one of the key references (again either deliberately or through osmosis) that the directors used for Kokobop. Why? Well Virgin Suicides was critically acclaimed when it was released for its look. It became a phenomenon when it was released and teenage girls were legitimately obsessed with its aesthetic (some of us who have grown up still are!). It was influential on cinema, music videos and design for several years afterwards and there are many films, ad campaigns and the like which blatantly mimic it. Here’s a Dazed article about it and another from ID magazine about Sofia Coppola’s aesthetics.  

Set mostly in summer it features continual scenes of the girls in nature, laying in grass, wandering around fields, having sex on football fields... (It also uses a lot of direct shots where the girls look at the viewer - allowing you to look at the girls as the boys did.) In Virgin Suicides the sun is constantly seen filtering through the leaves of trees and yet the whole film feels mildly haunting... sound familiar??

Virgin Suicides is about the end of summer and how hot temperatures can cause people to do crazy things... its about love and obsession and beauty... Kokobop meanwhile features endless shots of sunlight, trees and nature, and then places EXO in the middle of these shots - shots which are deliberately designed to look aesthetically beautiful whilst also being slightly mysterious... You’re meant to idolise and obsess about the members.

Director Sofia Coppola is known for her ability to make things look aesthetically beautiful and has also been discussed as a director who makes films ‘specifically for the female gaze’ - she makes films made to look ‘pretty’ for women and girls, and I believe Kokobop is doing exactly the same thing....   

“BOYFRIEND AESTHETICS”

The key way in which the female gaze is targeted in Kokobop is through a series of shots which I’m going to put under the banner of ‘boyfriend aesthetics’. Most of us in the fandom community will know about how we as a community label some images of idols/actors/models as being ‘boyfriend material’ or how we use tags like ‘Boyfriend Chanyeol’ etc.

Its pretty common for Kpop Mvs to only feature the idols of the band, as opposed to many US/UK/Western music videos which will happily hire models to portray girlfriends in videos. Whilst there are exceptions to this rule (BTS, many solo MVs etc), the majority of big come back MVs are more about the viewer (you) being looked at, included and in a way, targeted. 

This is done throughout Kokobop but is incredibly prominent in teaser trailers and solo teasers. 

These shots are not just designed to show how pretty EXO are - (but boy they are in Kokobop) - if that was the case they wouldn’t always be looking directly at the camera. 

Instead this is about YOU looking AT them and THEM looking BACK. 

Each of these shots is inviting you - and including you within the narrative. Instead of you being someone watching EXO have fun with girls and imagining you could be one of those girls, these ‘boyfriend’ shots instead allow you to enter into a private space with each of the members and to feel what it would be like to be looked at by them. 

‘Boyfriend aesthetics’ - or designing shots of idols to make them look like they could be your boyfriend - is a hallmark of contemporary kpop MVs (and Kpop in general!), and whilst Kokobop goes hard for it I think the best example you’re ever going to get of this in action is seen in CBX’s Blooming Day MV (2018). If somehow you haven’t seen it yet, watch it now cause oh man, its boyfriend aesthetic GOLD. 

FLOWER BOYS & BOTANICAL TRENDSETTERS

One thing I’ll mention briefly is that Kokobop also taps into the concept of  Khonminam - more colloquially known as ‘flower boys’. This term (adapted from the history of the Korean Flower Knights and combined with the Japanese Manga style of drawing effeminate men) discusses the soft male persona present in contemporary pan-Asian communities and is the combination of ‘soft’ or ‘feminine’ aesthetics (beauty, cuteness etc but also just things like the colour pink, flowers etc) and desirable masculinity.

You can read a BBC article here about flower boys & soft masculinity, however I would recommend if you’re really interested you read Korean Masculinities by Sun Yung. 

In many Kpop MVs you will see beautiful men set amongst flowers, wearing pastels... acting cute. To many this seems incredibly effeminate but it is not always designed with that intention - rather it is an overload of feminine aesthetics meant to appeal directly to the feminine gaze. 

In connection to the flower boy aesthetic, Kokobop should be noted for being one of the first MVs to embrace a heavily botanical theme in 2017, something we would later see develop as a trend used in multiple kpop MVs that followed it in both 2017 and 2018 (the best examples being Blooming Day but also Good Evening by SHINee).

BONUS: HOMOEROTICISM

Finally...One of the side effects of not having women in your MVs is that interaction between characters is limited to idol x idol interaction.

 In Kokobop we see a lot of shots of the guys hanging out together, walking around together as well as the choreo shots which are ofc group shots.

However, as with most MVs when the members are split into sub-groups for focus moments we see...er...some slightly different shots. 

Minseok & Sehun’s pairing in Kokobop is especially interesting as its charged with blatant homoeroticism. Now homoeroticism is not just the idea of ‘this person is gay’. Instead what I’m talking about the way in which homosexual relationships are suggested via the manipulation of media/framing. 

In Kokobop this is done via both the styling (pairing Minseok’s slightly effeminate look with Sehun’s overtly masculine one) as well as the framing (Minseok touching Sehun’s face slowly, them sharing a drink with their faces coming together as if it was a kiss). This too is designed with the viewer gaze in mind -  Kpop companies are not stupid y’all, they know you ship members together! 

If you’re in doubt - one way to see how blatantly homoerotic the Minseok/Sehun shots are is to compare them to the Kyungsoo/Jongdae shots which, whilst being of a similar nature are not as charged (potentially because they’re back to back rather facing each other!)

And everyone is freaking out (mainly hyunsung lmao) and magician!Jinnie looks annoyed lmao and these tiny hyunjins start stacking on top of eachother and the last tiny!hyunjin climbs on top of the tower of hyunjins and they all stand smack dab in front of idol!hyunjin. Meanwhile no one is believing what is happening and tiny!hyunjin slaps?? idol!hyunjin right across the face to see if he was real lmaoooo. I-

And when he does, he poofs into a normal, lifesized magician!hyunjins and now there are two hyunjins and then everyone starts clapping?? And the two hyunjins hug and meanwhile I'm there, dumbfounded and all lmaoo-
