Hello would you like a lot of Katie McGrath for the price of less Katie McGrath? Of course. But let me sell it to you anyway:

I've been having a miserable year and I'm about to have to refinance my credit card bill, which goes at about a 300% yearly interest rate.

Last year, right after one of my cats had passed from FeLV-related complications, another one of my cats was diagnosed with cancer and after a lengthy battle had to be euthanised in January. A couple months later my grandmother, who raised me for half my life, caught dengue fever during one of the worst epidemics in recent history in Brazil, and passed away after a coma. I caught it myself a week after her funeral, a particularly nasty hemorrhagic strain that minced my immune system. I caught covid, for the first time ever, right after. I had barely began to recover physically a couple months ago and my check-up returned 2nd degree AV blocks in my ECG, which I need to follow up with a specialist, and I've got RSI in my dominant wrist and a significant loss of cervical lordosis, which has been causing me migraines, pain and numbness and I need physiotherapy for. And then, last month, my 14 year old dog was also diagnosed with terminal cancer and is in palliative care.

Physical and psychological exhaustion snowballed, it's been really hard to work, then it got harder with generative AI, and I've been drowning in vet bills, doctors, labs, meds bills.

Fortunately (¿) my currency is devalued 5:1 to the dollar, 7:1 to the pound, and 6:1 to the euro, so if just 15 people up there buy this bundle it will be enough to save me from financial ruin this year.

Highlights from Rohan Stevenson's Interview with The Ladies of Lake (podcast)

Note: I've included some rough timestamps if you want to listen to a specific bit of the podcast. They're not accurate to the second, but they will get you to the relevant bit.

"Temp Love"

[6:30] Rohan says he and Rob Lane (the other composer) sometimes had a lot of trouble shifting the directors away from the temp music (the placeholder music used to establish the mood/tempo of a scene in the early editing stages). The directors often got attached to the temp music and found it difficult to go for something too different (a phenomenon known in the industry as “temp love”). Temp music used for Merlin included scores from Lord of the Rings, Batman, and other music with an epic feel — but, as the series went on, the temp music used was often Rob and Rohan’s own music from previous episodes. That is why a lot of music ended up being re-used, which Rob and Rohan found frustrating (it was also one of the reasons why they were not involved in season 4 and 5).

Crazy Schedule

[9:50] Merlin was a surprise success and the schedule got “pretty crazy”. The composers ended up working with some incredibly tight deadlines (Rohan mentions sending stuff off "on 5 o'clock on a Friday for a dub due to be screened the following day"), which was very stressful. [12:50] Since the editors used temp music for the cuts, the composers would need to match the tempo of the temp music when writing their cues(*) in order to make the edits work (“temp chasing”). Given the tight schedule, this wasn’t always a negative thing, as it could save a lot of time during the ideation/writing process.

Finding Inspiration 

[14:30] Rohan describes Merlin as “operatic” — which is why they drew inspiration from anything with a kind of operatic vibe, such as John Williams's music and his Star Wars score ("space opera"), and The Lord of the Rings — even Donnie Darko was used as temp music, and Rohan used it as a starting point to write his own version of an ominous beat. The producer of episode 3x06 (The Changeling) told Rohan that the vibe to go for in that episode was “Princess Bride”, which helped him immensely.

Going on Set

[18:00] Rohan and Rob didn't actually get to go to the set much. Occasionally, they did some recording in Prague, which was an opportunity for them to get together. When they were still working on S1, Rohan very nearly missed a recording session in Prague after missing his flight due to a fire at Heathrow. Apart from these occasions, the co-working process between him and Rob consisted mostly in “a lot of shouting down the telephone” (“There were some shouting matches” he recalls, laughing). Rohan was however invited to the set by Anthony Head, whom he describes as “a lovely man”.

[20:00] Generally, composers don’t need to be present on set, unless it’s for something like music supervision, when there is music being played live. He talks about working on a documentary on prehistoric sounds and having to go to Stonehenge to supervise some drummers during a midnight shoot, which was great (it was "all set with mysterious lightning and smoke going through Stonehenge", something you probably wouldn't be able to do now).

Meeting the Cast

[21:15] When asked about his favourite memory of working on Merlin, Rohan recalls being invited to the BFI (British Film Institute) for a Merlin presentation, where he played "the wrong kind of music" on the piano to accompany Arthur and Gwen’s scene in 2x02 (“I played it a bit like a tango, for a laugh”). On that occasion he met the Merlin cast, including Katie McGrath, whom he describes as “mad as a bat — but gorgeous”.

Favourite Composers

[27:00] Rohan and Rob grew up idolising the great “operatic” film composers, such as John Williams, Bernand Hermann, Miklós Rózsa, Gerry Goldsmith. In fact, it was Star Wars that got Rohan into composing. Rohan gave Rob a handwritten score of Return of the Jedi for his 40th birthday – and a little bit of Parade of the Ewoks, a piece from this film, “found its way into the score… just a little bit, about four bars.”(**)

[30:00] Rohan says his all time favourite film score is How To Train Your Dragon (“It’s unbelievable. It’s genius from bar one to the end”). Other all time favourite scores are Signs and, of course, Star Wars.

[31:50] Rohan says he was always into music, but when people ask him what inspired him to become a composer he loves to tell the story of how he became obsessed with the high-hat part in Dancing Queen (the bit “just between the chorus and the verse”) when he was 3-4 years old, and how he begged his mom to get him some cymbals because he wanted to reproduce that sound (“They won’t produce that sound – you need a high-hat, not cymbals. But she didn’t know that”). When asked if he found inspiration in classical music, he says he was “very taken with the whole story of Beethoven, to the point that I used to take myself off for walks in the countryside because that’s what he did”.

The Original Theme

[31:50] The opening theme we all know and love wasn’t the one originally written for the show – there was an alternative one. The opening theme Rob originally wrote sounded very close to Buckbeak’s Flight from the Prisoner of Azkaban – so much so that Rohan told Rob: “You’re not going to get away with that!” So Rob wrote a theme similar to the one we know, but in a major key. Eventually they settled on that theme in a minor key (“it was more dramatic”).

MIDI vs Live Instruments

[42:00] Bit of a technical question from a fan about using MIDI for the soundtrack instead of recording players and singers. This was partly due to the budget but also to the huge amount of music that needed to be produced – it’s a huge undertaking to prepare all parts, get them to the performers, record them, etc. They tried to use live instruments as much as possible, mostly to play the lead line or to play over the MIDI (a practice known as sweetening). Sometimes they also did it in reverse, by sweetening an orchestral performance with MIDI. But it was easier and quicker to tweak the music as needed to suit a scene when using samples. “A lot of the score is actually sampled – probably more than you think.”

Arthur and Gwen’s "Love Theme" and the Producers’ Influence

[50:00] Arthur and Gwen’s “love theme” was originally written by Rohan for Lancelot in episode 1x05 (note: it can be heard towards the end of the episode, when Lancelot leaves Camelot). Rob and Rohan would often expand on each other’s themes while working on an episode, and this is what happened here, since it was Rob who worked on episode 2x02. Rob’s “little touch” to Rohan’s original cue was to put the violin “over the top”, to give it more of a romantic flavour for Arthur and Gwen’s kiss scene(***).

Originally, Rob had written something different for this scene – a piece with a choir. The producers decided they wanted to use the theme Rohan had previously written for Lancelot instead. “They got a lot of confidence out of making that call, because it was the right call – it worked really well.” Unfortunately, from that moment on the producers started to make more calls about changing some of Rohan and Rob’s music “a little too often”.

[55:00] To cite the most egregious example of this, Rohan says that at the end of S3, when Arthur retakes Camelot, the producers used as temp music a cue Rob had previously written, played on a loop. Later, they decided to keep this looped cue as the final music rather than the “beautiful” replacement music Rob had written for this scene, which – in Rob and Rohan’s opinion – would've worked much better. Rohan described the music for this scene as “one of the nicest things [Rob] had written in the series”.

[58:00] Rob wrote a few cues for S5 but, apart from those, the producers mostly re-used music from previous seasons.

Rohan’s Opinion of the Music in 2x02

[1:00:00] Despite "a couple of really great moments" and an iconic romantic theme, he doesn’t think 2x02 is his and Rob's best episode. He would give it a 2.5 out of 5.

Current Projects

[1:00:02] Rohan is now working on developing his own style of music, which he calls “epic steampunk” — “Steampunk is a genre with a very distinct visual style, but no one has really defined a musical style for it”. (He says the score for Loki leans towards it, a little bit.) You can look for Dr Ignatius Cole and the Brassknuckle Steampunk Sinfonia if you're interested – there are 3 albums out already, available on Spotify and Youtube.

(*) A cue is the basic building block of a film score. Essentially, it is one complete piece of music from start to end, meant to play against a scene or sequence. (Source: x)

(**) It’s not in Fighting in the Market, although that’s the scene Rohan mentions right before saying this, but in the Meeting Arthur cue. Compare 0:44-0-54 to 0:48-1:00 in The Parade of the Ewoks. I suppose this was already obvious to someone familiar with the Star Wars soundtrack – in fact, someone already wrote a piece of meta about this and other similarities between Merlin’s OST and John Williams’s score. (I won’t link to it, but if you Google “Merlin soundtrack Star Wars tumblr” you should find it easily enough).

(***) The cues in ep 1x05 and 2x02 sound pretty much identical to me, to be honest, except the sound of the violin is a bit “louder” in 2x02? I suppose that’s what Rohan meant.

That has crossed my mind as well. Like, before I started on the first chapter I was contemplating having MC not be human because I was like "What makes her special? Why would the Denalis fall head over heels for her? How does one manage to charm an entire family of vampires?"

It was certainly tempting because I´m absolutely digging that concept of the Denalis being all smug and cocky, believing MC to be yet another mouse they can play with before going in for the final blow. Only for MC to...play along. Play the part of the innocent, because her appearance wouldn´t lead anyone to believe otherwise. To the public eye, she´s just an ordinary woman. A mortal.

The Denalis entertain her, so she´s willing to see where this goes.

...For now.

On the inside, however?

ANYWAY-

I ultimately decided against it because it just didn´t fit with what I had in mind. I´m a sucker for Beauty & The Beast type of stuff. Yknow, being held somewhere against your will by something that could snuff out your existence in the blink of an eye, but it decides not to because, for some strange reason, it seems to have a soft spot for you. Everyone else can f off though, no mercy.

It also helps that the place is actually quite nice to look at. Despite its rather...peculiar inhabitants.

Sooo yeah, I needed MC to be your ordinary human girl, facing off against forces that could wipe out entire armies in a matter of seconds. Because, in my books, there´s nothing sexier than having those forces at your beck and call, absolutely smitten with you, willing to kill for you, while you´re just there like-

(The last one is so MC & Kate yall. Kitty Kat, you hopeless case. 😭)

ANYWAY-

I gotta admit, the money thing has me a bit confused. Is that a thing? Like, making a sacrifice and getting a shit ton of money in return? Does that happen in any tv show or movie? Honestly curious cause I very rarely watch anything anymore. I´ve become more of a gamer and writer over the past couple of years. 😅

I do know Morgana Pendragon, but I haven´t actually seen her in anything cause *points to the aforementioned*. But I know a lot of ppl got the hots for her. I don´t blame them, lmao.

Imagine MC (a witch) living in Salem Village, the place where the accusations of witchcraft began. Those accusations were false, obviously, but it made blending in much more difficult for her kind. People have become wary, paranoid, forcing MC to a life in the shadows. She watched from afar as men and women alike - some of them close friends - were brought to trial. Some of them never returned home.

To this day, MC is plagued by feelings of guilt for merely watching as good men and women were executed in the name of "justice". She should have done something, could have done something. She has that power. But her heart had been gripped by a power mightier than her own: fear.

She can´t change the past, but she can ensure a future.

Multiple.

She now works from the shadows to preserve the light. A light that draws in creatures far more dangerous than herself. How she despises them.

Vampires.

Witch!MC claps eyes on the sisters, dragging some poor fella away. Fella´s already dead, so there isn´t much she can do. However, that doesn´t mean others can´t be saved. So she follows them, cloaking spell firmly in place, in the hopes they´re gonna lead her to their hideout. Because she couldn´t live with herself if she didn´t at least check, yknow?

Well, nobody´s there. Nobody with a heartbeat, that is.

Good.

She turns around, about to leave (because she might despise them but she doesn´t start fights without good reason), when-

"...Who´s there?"

...

Impossible.

Cue MC revealing herself. Cue MC acting all naive and innocent. Cue MC pretending to be human so she can infiltrate The Lair and find out what´s so special about that weird ass family that causes her powers to malfunction.

I just know it´s gonna be a mess à la The Sisters from there on out. The Denalis obsessed with the fake!human, while said fake!human is just there like-

Not even realizing she´s bewitching (hehe) an entire family of vampires - her sworn enemies - because she´s rather busy being a confused gremlin.

Harris campaign “Breaks Zoom”:

From the HollywoodReporter - Hundreds of thousands of Kamala Harris supporters have rallied behind the presumptive Democratic nominee this week, with Zoom calls breaking records with six-digit attendance numbers.

The events started Sunday following President Joe Biden’s announcement he would not seek re-election. More than 44,000 Black women joined a call to galvanize supporters for the vice president’s historic run for president, drawing celebrity names — including Yvette Nicole Brown and Jenifer Lewis — and raising an estimated $1.5 million.

The trend continued with thousands of Black men on a call earlier this week (they raised $1.3 million), followed by Zooms for white women, LGBTQ supporters, South Asian supporters and more.

At the white women call Thursday night, there were more than 100,000 participants (officially now 150,000), a number so staggering it caused significant technical glitches that sent many to watch the livestream on YouTube, where more than 25,000 also joined the call. ($10 million was raised)

Hollywood was represented across the interest groups. Mindy Kaling joined the South Asian call, with George Takei, Zachary Quinto, Raven Simone, Sophia Bush, Ashlyn Harris, Brian Michael Smith and Justin Tranter attending the LGBTQ call. (Tranter, the co-writer of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck Babe,” announced he would donate $20,000 to the cause.)

Katie McGrath, Connie Britton, Pink and more signed on to the white women’s call, with Pink reportedly joining right after leaving the stage of a performance in Sweden.

Another Zoom call, women for Harris, is scheduled for this weekend.

We knew Trump was rattled by Kamala’s arrival in the campaign, but we didn’t think he would actually wimp out of the debate. But that’s exactly what the orange chickenshit did yesterday. Making up some silly bullcrap about “Barack Hussein Obama” and flailing like the hopeless loser that he is, Trump has officially backed out of the scheduled debate in September. Vice President Harris is already calling him out and making sure the media knows she is ready to go.

All seven battleground states - AZ, GA, MI, NC, NV, PA, WI - are clearly competitive now and in play. New battleground state polls this week also showed Harris gaining and in a competitive position in all seven states. Polls of Maine and New Hampshire found Harris at Biden 2020 numbers, an election Biden won by 4.5 pts. Simon Rosenberg: “To be honest the movement we are seeing towards Harris this week has been a bit surprising to me. It usually takes a while for big events to work their way through the electorate. So that we are seeing meaningful movement this early is a good sign.”

Humility teaches us that those challenges are overcome through compassion, kindness, and love for others rather than seeking power over others.

I also am acutely aware of how many opinions I had in my youth and even later that embarrass me today. supergirl is the most true and beautiful tv show ever because they did winn being in love with kara and kara liking james in season one and it was cool and all but then they said hey. what if. we split those men off to do vaguely gay shit with each other while kara flirts with katie mcgrath and experiences the triumphs and pitfalls of heteronormativity with mon-el while also experiencing coming out of the closet via her sister thus rendering any possible similar awakening in kara impossible because she has issues and also she can’t tell if katie mcgrath is a supervillain in training or a rouge antihero and she also can’t tell if mon-el is a supervillain in training or a rouge antihero. which could mean nothing of course i’m sure it could have been completely coincidental to give kara two separate new people this season she had a preconceived bad notion of re: fate, that she needs to overcome. i’m sure kara’s struggle with accepting that mon-el represents everything about the planet she was raised to look down on could very well pose no meaningful parallel to her relationship to the sister of her cousin’s nemesis… anyway. winn and james are like having marital problems rn. and kara’s trapped with mon-el on an unknown planet with a red sun and has no powers

Re: Twisters

As an Okie myself I'm torn. Because on the one hand, just the THOUGHT of Katie Mcgrath attempting a Southern Drawl brings tears to my eyes. (So many times it's wayyy too exaggerated. But we do say y'all consistently. And I will have no peace if I keep imagining Katie Mcgawwww herself calling "y'all come back now, ya hear!") But on the other, Kate in the movie is known for being able to mask her roots well, so maybe I shouldn't get so hung up on it. I will say, Kara being the one canonically enamored with the Wizard of Oz could still be the inspiration for her wrangling career. And the idea of Lena returning to her mother's humble ranch and showing Kara all of her old science projects in the barn while a good old fashioned Oklahoma rainstorm gently patters on the tin roof is kinda sweet to imagine.

*fun fact! The scene in Twisters where Kate and Tyler first meet, in between those grain silos, was filmed just outside my home town!

Hello would you like a whole lot of Katie McGrath for the price of less Katie McGrath? Of course. But let me sell it to you anyway:

I've been having a miserable year and I'm about to have to refinance my credit card bill, which goes at about a 300% yearly interest rate.

Last year, right after one of my cats had passed from FeLV-related complications, another one of my cats was diagnosed with cancer and after a lengthy battle had to be euthanised in January. A couple months later my grandmother, who raised me for half my life, caught dengue fever during one of the worst epidemics in recent history in Brazil, and passed away after a coma. I caught it myself a week after her funeral, a particularly nasty hemorrhagic strain that minced my immune system. I caught covid, for the first time ever, right after. I had barely began to recover physically a couple months ago and my check-up returned 2nd degree AV blocks in my ECG, which I need to follow up with a specialist, and I've got RSI in my dominant wrist and a significant loss of cervical lordosis, which has been causing me migraines, pain and numbness and I need physiotherapy for. And then, last month, my 14 year old dog was also diagnosed with terminal cancer and is in palliative care.

Physical and psychological exhaustion snowballed, it's been really hard to work, then it got harder with generative AI, and I've been drowning in vet bills, doctors, labs, meds bills.

Fortunately (¿?) my currency is devalued 5:1 to the dollar, 7:1 to the pound, and 6:1 to the euro, so if just 15 people up there buy this bundle it will be enough to save me from financial ruin this year.

She believes her dad feels very guilty about what happened to her mom and tries to shower her with love and affection because of this. LEA has a lot of complicated feels re: her dad and honestly her entire family. Doesn't especially want to be queen, but feels she would make a better one than her brothers but despises the stupid games her step-mothers are playing to try to win their sons the crown. Super smart!!!!!! Can be sarcastic af; lots of men have offered her her hand, but her dad doesn't think any of them are good enough.

EVA GREEN - JUDE LAW's second wife. some say she is an enchantress to have drawn JUDE LAW into her bed when he was so in love with his first wife, but at the time, his wife had given him no children and he decided to bring back the laws of old, which would allow him to marry as many women as he liked. EVA promised him a son -- which she did eventually give him -- but not before he grew impatient and married again. EVA's son is not his oldest son, but he is the eldest son of his second wife (as his first one gave him none) and she believes that this is enough for him to have a claim as his father's heir. hates REBECCA FERGUSON with a fiery burning passion!!! Not a fan of his other kids either and it is said that she once tried to have BRADLEY JAMES and JULIAN MORRIS killed. did she or didn't she? that's one secret she will never tell xoxo
