i'm sure yous can tell from my blog theme, but i am very much into rdr2. i'm only about 25% through a current playthrough (despite having 60 odd hours) because i get so sidetracked with exploring the map and interacting with npc quests LMFAO. these are for my fellow cowboy lovers and arthur morgan enthusiasts hehe !!!
[usage info] — please like, reblog, and credit @deltamel on your blog (pinned post or each post — text or tags) if you use any of my resources. personal use only. do not repost, edit, or steal my designs. reblogs are enormously appreciated <3

Blog post 7 - Is realism worth the effort?
There are two factors to consider when discussing realism within videogames, the graphics, and the gameplay. Both of these have a significant impact on the overall quality and reception of the game which I am going to break down.
Different art styles
There are different kinds of graphics you see in games. There is the stylised kind which can be broken down into a few different types such as Cel- shading which can be seen in games like Borderlands (2009) and its sequels, giving a unique look to the characters and environment, or the exaggerated kind which you can find in games like Sea of Thieves (2018) where lots of aspects of the game look exaggerated. Then there is realism, which is what lots of AAA game studios strive for. An example of this would be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) and the previous instalments of the franchise, which aim to have realistic graphics with each new instalment.
Is realism worth it?
There are generally two opinions when it comes to graphics, the first is that graphics should be as realistic as possible, and the other thinks that graphics are overrated. I’m of the latter opinion.
Good graphics are much easier to achieve nowadays, so having a good-looking game isn’t as much of an achievement as it used to be. So, there’s no need to waste time and effort on creating amazing graphics and instead the resources should be spent on crafting good gameplay, narratives, characters, etc.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting as technology evolves all the effort put into creating these incredible graphics could be obsolete by next year, as the constant hunger for detail will inevitably lead to better ways of making said graphics.
More to games than realism
It’s also important to consider the level of realism in the gameplay and how much it actually contributes to the overall experience. For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) was criticised for being too realistic, which I can attest to. There were many mundane tasks to complete such as cleaning guns to maintain them or feeding your horse to keep it in good health, as well as quality of life issues such as having to go to your horse to change weapons. This is essentially having realistic gameplay for the sake of it, instead of it contributing to the overall experience. It takes away from the fun of the gameplay by having to do these monotonous tasks, especially when we usually play games to relax, but instead get agitated by the very thing we are trying to relax by doing.
However, when we compare this to rockstars other game Grand Theft Auto V (2013), realism is out the window. While there is some sense of being grounded in reality, there are some ridiculous stories, weapons and vehicles all for players to enjoy, hence why the game is still played over 10 years later.
My practice
To re iterate, I think that the movie like quality of realism is an unnecessary thing to strive for. It does not need to be prioritized in game development, which allows efforts to be directed at other aspects of game development like the story or gameplay which would take the game further. Simply put good graphics don’t make a good game.

okay so i am a whiz at naming things. i love names, always have. when i was a kid i used to borrow baby name books from the library, pore over them picking favorites and making up stories.
so number one piece of advice: make a list of names you like. this blog is one of my absolute faves to pick through. this fantasy one isn’t too bad and this one cracked me up. (I did a test roll and got the absolutely brilliant Gonzanimated as a name for a zombie and i hurt myself laughing) and there’s always https://www.behindthename.com/ and its sister sites for surnames and places.
Place names are usually [adjective] + [geographical term.] Not always but like... a lot of the time. Black Lake, Green River, Elephant Rock. Even modern day names for things are usually just the name of the thing modernised from ye olde english, or translated from other languages. (Ashley means ash tree+woodland. Algiers means the islands. and there’s that heritage tumblr post talking about how Avon River just means river river, or Sahara Desert means desert desert. People have been pointing at a thing and going THAT SURE IS A THING for literally the entire time we’ve been people, lbr.)
And when it comes to towns, a lot of the time they sprang up where one person or group had settled because of water, or gold, or other resources. So you can have a town called Winchester, after the last name of the family that founded it. (The city where I was born is called Shreveport. It’s a river port that was founded by a Captain Shreve. On the Red River. Which is red bc of the deep red coloring of the mud in the Louisiana soil. This is not a bug, its a feature.)
Or it’s called something geographic, again. Tumbleweed comes to mind. Or something metaphoric, like Tombstone or Haven.
And the cool thing is you can use this method both ways around: either you know the geography and name it accordingly (a river lined with birch trees being called Birch River) or you don't know it but you like a name, and the story comes out of it. (My favorite from my RDR2 prequel: Sadler’s Vigil, which is a ranch where a man named Sadler held his land under siege from bandits alone for three days before finally fending them off.)
Either way, the names inform the story informs the names. All this stuff is a big moebius strip.
That’s the easy way, btw.
The other one, the undying spiral of conlanging, is the work of Holly Lisle (her writing courses are for sale here and the one i’m talking about is like $4) I first bought them almost a whole adult ago (17 years) and I still use the method to this day. I cannot recommend them enough, she goes IN-DEPTH in how language creates thought, and culture, and informs the history and characters of your world, and can be the basis of your worldbuilding. She's also an engaging, interesting writer. What I'm about to explain is like... the absolute dustiest bare bones of her conlanging method.
I don’t want to infringe copyright so the tl;dr is: you give yourself a toybox of sounds you want to use, then you scribble out gibberish using only those sounds until you have a workable vocabulary. Then you start assigning them to concepts like geographical terms, and names, and concepts for your story. There’s a stopping point there, if you just want the basics of place names and character names to give the book/campaign a flavor, but she does explain how to create grammar and syntax until you have an entire working language. And how it can inform your character’s culture and indeed your characters themselves.
It’s all a lot of trial and error. I have a character I named perfectly the very first time. I have another that I renamed six times.
You just gotta have patience and keep going. C:
the one thing nobody tells you about writing your own dnd campaign is that you now have to name people, places, and things

I realized I never made an official post for this, but I made a reference blog for rdr2 as a resource to help people with fanworks. (Writers, artists, RPers, cosplayers, etc.)
@reddeadreference
It is a huge work in progress (I only started like... a month or two ago I think but I have 300+ posts so it's a long way from done but there's stuff there)
It's got photo posts, camps by chapter, detail posts, outfit posts, newspapers, letters, POI, cutscene transcripts, shopping catalogue(s), audio, Strangers stuff, building details, Saint Denis' complete layout (one of the first things I did), Journal pages, etc. (The pinned post has a progress map)
