THE Smallest Bird! Absolutely Tiny! Ruby-crowned Kinglets are the smallest birds I have ever banded in my life (as I've not banded a hummingbird... yet)! The majority of songbirds moving through the station weigh in between 10-15g. Kinglets, on average, weigh 6g. That's the same as a US quarter. Can you believe that??

Even more wild is that kinglet don't seem to mind the winter weather the same as other songbirds, and will overwinter further north than you would expect such a little guy to do! They stay as active as possible to keep warm, picking what tiny bugs they can find.

The "ruby-crown" in question is absent from this bird, as she was a young female, but even if she had a full crest it wouldn't be evident in a picture like this. The male's crown is able to be hidden beneath their head feathers, only to be flaired during mating displays or territory disputes.

All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share images was granted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (BCR).

I think photos 1, 2, and 4 show an Orange-crowned Warbler. Photos 3 and 5 look like a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Unidentified bird, Assiniboine Park, early October 2021.  

Small (sparrow-sized).  Yellow-olive all over, brighter yellow belly.  White and black wing bars.  White eye ring.  

Possibly a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, but I don’t think this bird was small enough.  

Possibly a Blue-headed Vireo, but the belly wasn’t yellow enough.  

Possibly a Cassin’s Vireo–but they don’t come nearly far east enough. ��

     this is it, sehyun muses to himself, checking once more to make sure he has the correct place as per the address in his calendar. even with his pit stops along the way, sehyun ran a little early for their meeting but he figured better early than late. ( it gave him time to orientate himself and do some last minute reading for the meetings too; catch up on what he needs to so whoever he’s meeting wouldn’t have to deal with him too much. right, right. ) but this is roki, he reminds himself, pacing in front of the entrance to the club. but people change, he thinks and stops right there because standing here and worrying about it isn’t going to help. might as well just do it. so sehyun pushes through the door, spies nobody in sight but hears voices, sounds. “ hey there, excuse me, i’m here for roki? ” he can’t help the briefest of waver to his voice, gripping the plastic bags tighter, a soft crinkling sound in the empty club.

The ultimate sound of fangirls is what reached her ears first and as she looked up, her breath hitched in her throat as she saw him walk through the door--there was nobody else it really could be with hair like that. It was no secret that Hana was a fan of this band, Kim Roki the drummer to be even more specific. What made it even worse was the fact that her fans had tweeted him and brought it to his attention that she admired him and here he was just waltzing into the same café she was. A groan escaped her as she tried to bury her nose further into her Nintendo Switch, effectively turning the sound down so it wouldn’t attract too much attention.

She doubted he even knew who she was anyway. He was a high class drummer, a very known band--while she was some stupid gamer girl who got angry at Starcraft on stream. Please don’t see her, please don’t see her. She cringed as girls pretty much flung themselves at him--she knew how that felt when she had people do it to her, it wasn’t pleasant in the slightest and she felt angry at them for invading his personal space. Just let the poor boy get his goddamn coffee or whatever. Keeping her eyes on the game in front of her, she tried to focus on that and not her beating fangirl heart. Get it together, Song. Stop being pathetic.

                     ´ ･ .  ✶ he can’t help but giggle, watching roki getting ready for the show, before getting up from the couch and walking towards the door. his words make chase to stop, before he turns around and closes the distance between them, arms wrapping around the taller male’s neck, lips pressing against his cheek. ‘ that’s one kiss. make me swoon and maybe you’ll get more later, ’ he whispers at his ear and then he’s out of the door, a wide ass grin on his lips.

I don't think you get how small this bird is. Its mouse sized- its probably smaller than mouse sized! The RCKIs (rickys, as we affectionately call them) I have banded typically weigh 6g. A medium-sized hummingbird is like 3.5g. They're almost hummingbird sized, and they overwinter in parts of Canada and North America that still regularly receive heavy snowfall! What the heck??

Their songs are too big for their body, too. When you hear their song you'd expect to see a sparrow sized bird, perhaps, or at least a warbler up there in the treetops, but no, its a Ricky, hanging out in the shrubs beside you while he picks off tiny bugs and then turns around and belts another beautiful tune.
