[Psychonauts 2 Spoilers! You have been warned!]
Comic and written form below the cut - The Gzesarevich's Son
(I forgot to look at refs of the room... Oops) (Also small tw for drinking and arguing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Written version bc I'm feeling fruity
~~~
The arguing seemed endless. As the baby's wails filled the empty space between his parents' bickering, Gristol could only endure with an exhausted, flustered silence of his own-- tucked into the corner of the couch, glaring at the empty wall as the baby wailed on the table in front of him.
"Well," his father indignantly sniffed from his placement on the bed, "we can't keep it."
"So, what do you propose we do with it?" His mother retorted, tone just as bitter as her husband's as she glared into the glass she'd refilled for the umpteenth time that night.
"Get rid of it." "Get rid of it? It's a baby, not a bug!" "Well what ELSE CAN I SAY!?"
Gristol groaned, as a shouting match erupted between his parents. He had no escape, the TV too quiet to block them out-- not to mention the baby wailing and screaming only two feet in front of him.
In a moment of utter clarity, Gristol shot up to his feet-- simultaneously scooping the infant up into his arms and swiftly approaching the bathroom. He slid open the door, and his parents' voices only muffled once he shut and locked the door.
"Ugh, finally." He groaned, sliding down to the floor with his back against the sink-- the only spot shielded from the open world with the massive window behind them. The baby sniffled and babbled, clinging to Gristol as the young man awkwardly but gently cradled him in his tattered flannel blanket.
"Much better, huh kid?" "Aaababa..." "Same here."
Gristol adjusted himself as he responded to the baby's babbling. He glanced down at the thin, wispy red hair of the tiny boy in his arms. He hummed thoughtfully, taking note of the hospital band still around the infant's wrist.
With a delicate hand, he took hold of the boy's arm-- while the surname was missing, the first name certainly wasn't.
"Razputin?" He read in a hushed tone. The baby, Razputin, only whined in reply. Gristol sighed, tucking the small thing to his chest again and pushing himself up.
"Well, Razputin. Let's clean you up." He said, now holding the baby up in front of him to inspect the dirt and grime all over the poor thing. The boy hadn't opened his eyes, little fists balled up to his face as he kicked and wriggled with complaint.
"At least one of us can smell nice." He mused with a smile. Holding Razputin against his chest again, he turned the sink on to clean the tiny little thing off.
It only took five minutes, Razputin cleaned off. Gristol now sat on the edge of the sink, humming a tune as he carefully dried Razputin off, the baby much calmer and not fussing anymore.
Then Gristol paused. Razputin's eyes were open as he clutched Gristol's wrist with a small smile, tongue poking out as he cooed and babbled. His eyes were so big, a gorgeous green that held so much... Affection.
Gristol stared in silence, tearing up as this tiny helpless little boy gazed up at him with so much love. Gristol inhaled, then hugged Razputin up close to him-- face resting against his damp red hair as he murmured a weak- "Oh my God."
His mind was made up.
The arguing continued on in the suite, Rokel and Theodore still shouting at each other with disdain and indecision. Until--
"Shut UP! He's STAYING!" Gristol yelled, as loudly as his lungs would allow as he waltzed out of the bathroom -- Razputin held to him as the baby babbled and cooed.
"Staying?!" Theodore exclaimed as Rokel reeled from dropping her glass, Gristol passing the two with a content smile. "Have you lost your--"
"Yep!" Gristol interrupted, stopping in his tracks to hold Razputin up in front of him again, the freckle-doused baby so eager to have the attention.
"As far as I care, he's Razputin Malik." Gristol announced to the dismay of his parents.
"My future Gzesarevich!"
A redraw of Waterloo World's end credits pic and some other stuff I either forgot to post or felt I should add from recently! (Like I'm so mad I forgot to post this Boyd one I was so happy with it!!!) I took the liberty of changing the expressions in the first one bc they all looked a little TOO dead for a "Thank you"/"Congratulations" screen so I hope it still does it justice!
There are a couple of lines in Psychonauts 2 that I think about quite a bit. I’m pretty sure these have already been done but if NOT, then. Uh. Spoilers for Psychonauts 2 I guess?
First off- one of Sam’s lines. There’s actually a lot about Sam that I think could have been put to better use—specifically a conversation about how psychic powers aren’t always controllable, giving parallels between Compton, Dogan, and Maligula and MAYBE Raz. But the line I SPECIFICALLY think about is a joke one.
“And if you use enough syrup, you can’t taste the difference between chicken and snake. Eggs is eggs!”
In Psychonauts, eggs are used as a metaphor for brains. Like, this isn’t some vague thing, it’s extremely front and center. Eggs and brains are directly linked. And, it should be noted, that Sam actually puts an entire nest—INCLUDING BIRD EGGS—in the, uh…. ‘Pancake mix’.
So, snakes and chickens and syrup, right? Chickens, generally used to describe someone who is cowardly or otherwise not the type to actually do anything, syrup being sweet enough to distract from other tastes, and snakes being, well, people who are not trustworthy.
And then there’s Nick Johnsmith, aka Gristol Malik, who is a well liked non psychic that Truman calls a lick spittle—someone who fawns over others easily. In other words, a snake (egg, brain) that acts sweet (and syrupy) enough to seem like a chicken (egg, brain).
Do you see. Do you SEE THE VISION HERE.
Anyways onto phrase 2. Said by Gristol Malik.
“He took a poor, sad, country girl and turned her into a mighty warrior. And I’m going to do it again.”
Now, usual context will say he means he’ll bring Maligula out of Lucy/Nona. I don’t think that’s incorrect, per se.
But one of the things that really, REALLY snapped Lucy/Maligula was the death of Marona, her sister.
And who do we have camping nearby? Why, it’s an entire family. In fact, it’s Raz’s entire family. And at LEAST half of them are psychics.
Gristol already views Raz as a puppet. He only kind of likes him because he’s half Grulovian. And, you know, during the Rhombus of Ruin, Loboto was no longer under Oleander’s employee, so… who wanted Raz’s brain removed? Someone who, oh I don’t know, might have heard about Raz being a powerful psychic that MIGHT have noticed Raz’s rather unique name… or, more specifically, the last name of a circus that performed for the Gzar and his family, famous for water acts. One that, by chance, someone could have known that a Galochio, a family of psychics, recently married into?
And you know, Maligula is older, it’s good to have back-ups, right? I mean, this is the same guy that ACTUALLY pulled one over on an entire spy group of mind readers.
But, hey, maybe it wasn’t a plan to turn Raz into Maligula by killing one or some or all of his family! Raz is kind of pissed right now, and might not snap the way Gristol would want him to. I’m pretty sure murdering, say, Mirtala, his baby sister, might not work in Gristol’s favor when Raz is already against him.
That said… he’s not the only psychic in the Aquato family. And in fact some of those family members aren’t the most on board with the whole… Psychics and Psychonauts business.
Specifically, we have a barely used plot thread including Frazie Aquato and her acceptance of her psychic powers!
I’m sure that, oh say, her little brother dying in the middle of him helping the Psychonauts pick up their messes, when he should have been able to be saved by one of his heroes since he was literally at their headquarters and surrounded by psychic adults, will only have good things happen to the Psychonauts. I’m SO sure that Frazie won’t get extremely pissed at these people her brother looked up to so much. She’ll definitely be understanding and absolutely won’t use what seems to be a family trait of extremely powerful psychic power along with the hydrokinesis in her bloodline. Specifically because she, an acrobat since birth and taught to ignore a lot of the usual fears most people have about safety and the instinct to flee, definitely has a great relationship with her fight or flight mode.
:))))
Anyways I have a lot of thoughts about Psychonauts 2 (I’m not saying I’d do a fix it of some things that bother me, but I do tend to do canon rewrites to smooth out wrinkles as a fun writing exercise/my version of hyperfixation on media and with the time gap between the games there is PLENTY of those in the plot, so uhhhhhhhh) but no one to bother them to, so uhhhhh yeah thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
[Psychonauts 2 Spoilers! You have been warned!]
Tumblr media
Razputin Donovan Malik, future Gzesarevich of Grulovia
No one really knows how the lost baby ended up in the Lady Luctopus, much less how he ended up in the North Penthouse. But as Gzar Theodore Malik and Gzarina Rokel Malik argued about what to do with the screaming infant, their twenty-something son-- Gzesarevich Gristol Malik-- Decided to handle things himself.
Gristol cleaned the little boy up, who only had an armband that read "Razputin", and quickly fell in love with the sweet little boy. With some challenges, he began raising Razputin as his own son.
At age 6, Razputin watched his grandfather Theodore die. At age 7, his grandmother Rokel followed.
Suddenly he was uprooted and became part of Gristol's plans to infiltrate the Psychonauts -- now under the alias "Razputin Johnsmith", and the Motherlobe became his primary residence as his dad "Nick" started working there.
Now he's 10, and being sent to summer camp with his friend Lili-- his dad insists it's important.. just won't say why.
HI I AM OBSSED WITH YOUR UNCLE NIKOLI AU HOLY FUCK
aww tysm!!
Tumblr media
was thinking more of this au + this inspired me to draw it. was specifically thinking on the relationship between raz and Uncle "Nikoli" (would raz even call him uncle? or would he choose a slavic or a italian term?)
Raz looks up to and trusts his uncle due to Nikoli's lack of hard opinions on psychics like the other family members and being a fellow black sheep of the family. Nikoli's sudden leave to find himself (stirred up a bad argument between him and Agustus) inspired Razputin to do the same the following year.
While Nikoli does care for and has a soft spot for his nephew, he isn't above using Raz's position as a trusted Psychonaut Intern to gather evidence about what happened in Grulovia.
Trying my best to not make him too OOC but still wanting to show how different his childhood affected his personality
[This is him in his winter coat just after getting back from his travels, i'd imagine in game he'd be sitting at the diner or smn]
Day 7: Flatline / Restrained / CPR Characters: Calilgosto Loboto, Sasha Nein, Razputin Aquato, Lili Zanotto, Morceau Oleander, Milla Vodello Warnings: None Summary: Loboto, who had stowed away on the jet after blowing up Charlie Psycho Delta, inadvertently gives away his position, only to realize he isn’t as far away from his problems as he’d hoped.
His first mistake was taking this blasted job to begin with.
His second mistake was not planning a better escape.
His third mistake was letting himself fall asleep, but who was counting?
The next thing he knew, the compartment door sprang open, and Loboto tumbled out onto the airplane aisle.
There was a very, very long pause, followed by a cacophony of voices.
"Loboto?!"
"Cal?!"
"I'M GONNA KILL HIM!"
"Lili, darling, please—!"
"Everyone, quiet."
That finally shut everyone up. The tall green man was approaching him, and Loboto pushed himself up on his arms, cocking his head. "Ah!" He gave what he hoped was a pacifying grin. "You must be the leader of this operation! I would just like to say that this was all just a big misunder—"
A blue transparent hand was suddenly around his middle.
"—standing," he wheezed.
"That is doubtful," the man said. A chair inched toward Loboto, and in a quick motion, the hand lifted him onto it and readjusted its grip, pinning him to the back of the chair.
Loboto grunted. "How much does it cost for a first class upgrade? Can't even sit in these chairs..." He shifted in his seat as much as he was able, which was very little.
The green man stared down at him. "It is good that you're here, however. Your help will be instrumental in sorting everything out."
"Help?" Loboto echoed. "Well, I can certainly take a look at your teeth, but after that, we'll have to schedule an appointment! Not to mention the paperwork..."
"No, Loboto," the child next to him said gently. "He's talking about what happened with Truman."
"Who?"
Everyone around him turned to look at something off to the side. His loupes twitched over to follow their gaze, and he gave a start.
There was the curly-bearded man whom he'd... operated on. Except it wasn't him.
For a split second, one of the man's eyes opened a slit, and stared at him directly.
Loboto went rigid, straightening his back and facing forward. Visions of watery serpents and rain and oceans and the scariest woman he'd ever seen flooded his mind, and he began to tremble. "Never met him in my life!" he said, his voice taking on a higher octave. His loupes twitched every which way while simultaneously avoiding anyone else's gaze.
"Yeah, we definitely didn't see you holding him captive," the army man—who was in a mermaid tail that he was in the midst of coloring green for some reason—stated, narrowing his eyes.
"Of course you didn't!" Loboto said. "I had nothing to do with this! I was an innocent bystander!"
"Innocent?!" The scary little girl who bore a striking resemblance to the one he'd captured a few days ago suddenly hopped off her chair, storming up to him. Loboto leaned back as much as he was able, and felt himself sweating—not because he was scared of course, but because the temperature around him was oddly rising. "You'd better talk, you big weirdo, or I'm gonna—"
"Lili!" the boy cried, and she stopped, holding herself back, but keeping her fiery gaze on him. Mercifully the temperature dropped down a few degrees, though he was still sweating.
"Well!" Loboto said, jerking against the psychic grip on his middle. "I hate to leave so soon, but, see, Crispin's got an appointment that he's had booked for months in advance, and he hates it when I'm late—"
"You're in an airplane, Cal," the army man grunted.
Loboto stared at him. "So?" When everyone stared blankly at him, he went on, "Get me off of it."
"I... don't think that's a good idea," the little boy said. "Not unless you want to fall into the ocean, anyway."
"The... ocean?" Loboto echoed. He wished that scary girl were trying to set him on fire again, because suddenly he felt very cold as he saw himself plunging into the salty water, and icy fangs sinking into his ankle and dragging him deeper into the depths. The water was cold and numbing and he couldn't breathe, the serpent was wrapped around him, he couldn't—
"Dr. Loboto?"
With a start Loboto realized he was still on the plane, but the psychic hand was still keeping him pinned to the chair, and the person who had the power to make him die the most horrible death with the snap of his fingers was sitting just a few feet away, listening to every word he said. He swallowed, his throat dry. "G... get me out of here."
"We've still some time before we reach our destination," the tall green man said, from what sounded like several yards away. "We'll exit the jet at that point, but until then, I'd like to ask you some questions, Dr. Loboto."
Loboto struggled against the psychic grip around him. "Get me out of here," he repeated, slightly louder. He felt cold, and he could so easily see the blue psychic energy around him as blue serpents coiling around his body. "Get me out, let me go—"
"Caligosto, you're going to be all right," came a woman's voice. "We just want to ask you a few—"
"LET ME GO!" he shrieked, kicking out his feet and throwing himself against his restraints, which refused to budge. "GET ME OUT! I WANT OFF OF THIS PLANE!"
"S-Sasha, what are you...?"
"Just hold on."
Loboto ignored the rest of what they were saying, using all of his energy to fight against his restraints. "LET ME GO!"
His client was listening. If he slipped and told them anything he was going to die. He couldn't get out of here, he couldn't get out of here, he couldn’t—
Something was in front of his face, and he yanked himself backward. "AH!"
"Don't worry," he heard the green man say, as the device began to emit a soft purple light and warbling noises. "You're just going to take a rest."
Before he had time to panic further, Loboto found himself staring into the device, trying to discern its usage. But as he did so, he felt his muscles relaxing, his head drooping. "I can't..." he mumbled, but he was so tired, he couldn't even remember what he was trying to say. "I... have to..."
The world faded, and he dozed off.
Given that Lili was a person of interest to Gristol, I wonder if he originally intended for her to be the one he manipulated into "fixing" Ford. That father-daughter bond would be a pretty easy thread to tug on to get her to do what he wanted. But then this random crazy-powerful kid helps "rescue" him, and Lili's like "yeah that's my bf," and suddenly she's not as isolated as he thought she was. But hmm, this kid seems pretty close to Ford, and eager to please, maybe he's a good plan B.
And then he learns Raz's last name and is like "Oho...ohohohohohoho...😏"
