An Experience at BangOn NYC's Inaugural Elements Festival
Last Saturday afternoon the Razberry Team had the pleasure of attending the inaugural first year of BangOn NYC's ELEMENTS festival. With incredible production at both the massive BangOn 3D and the more recent and intimate FREQUENCY parties we had high expectations of what was to come that we can safely say were well exceeded. The festival was held in the “Grain Elevator”, a sprawling, abandoned facility nestled on the water in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The venue was industrial, unique, and magnificent - drawing comparisons to everything from a foreign country's marketplace to a Call of Duty multiplayer map, it was certainly a sight yet unseen by the vast majority of well-experienced revelers.
Early Revelers
The day got off to snappy start with few hitches - while it was difficult finding the entrance (literally off the beaten path) presence of a full professional security team and staff at the gates made it very clear that Bang On had stepped up their legitimacy in working on a multi-stage festival. Interestingly enough, the heaviest early-day crowds weren't at any of the four advertised stages, instead opting to join the fun of the TRIBES NY Art Car takeover, happening on Burning Man's famous Thunder Gumbo Art Car. Curated by STRONGBROS, the art car featured a headlining set by Tony Quattro that perfectly balanced some huge tracks with a fun summery, sunny atmosphere. Other notable early day acts included Mess Kid, a well-known local stalwart with the reputation and title of 'Alexander Wang's favorite DJ', Lenvi and Don Clark, residents of Nightvision's PRISM, as well as Webster Hall's Alex English.
Before the mayhem!
Roaming between stages on the sprawling grounds it was easy to see the intention of the layout, utilizing the industrial setting to provide a wealth of relaxation options that still gave immediate access to music. VIP areas were designated rooms inside the central buildings between stages - as many were elevated and open air due to the lack of windows it was easy for us to take a few shots of the stages while taking a break in the lounges.
The Festival had a decent number of other activities besides it's few stages - Festivalgoers could choose from a photobooth, a giant bouncy slide, and a silent disco. Live installations were expansive, with a full projection on the side of an container ship, (which also hung a huge disco ball from its crain), to a fearless performance by an aerial dancer swinging from the top of the largest abandoned building, drawing the entire festival’s attention before the final slew of headliners.
Huge projections and disco ball.
As the night proceeded the atmosphere took on the surrealism that we've always experienced at such full scale music festivals. The Earth Mainstage buzzed with excitement as Harvard Bass took the stage, then Azari & III and finally Mr. Oizo. As the famed headliner took the stage, a light rain started coming down, ramping up the magic of the experience. Fire and mermaid dancers lit up the stage, encouraging an energetic and crazy crowd. As thunder began to clap, halfway through his set Mr. Oizo took it even further with his selections, playing a set of trademark French bangers both unknown and immediately received by the crowd. The organization by the entirety of the BangOn crew and their many partners helped make the first year of ELEMENTS a very successful day. It was a unique experience and the Razberry Team can't wait to be back!
