So, I made some Jon and Rhaegar designs, for future fanart purposes. As a prerequisite I'm going to need everyone here to agree that these look like 8 year olds. We're making this an AU where this is what 8 year olds look like. An AU where I can draw 8 year olds, even. Look I tried my best, they look youngish. Tweens, teens, close enough yeah? How does one draw a child. help
Give a big props to Costumes/Seven Kingdoms | Wiki of Westeros | Fandom for helping me give them region accurate clothes.
Tumblr media
Some notes:
Neither of them being in their favorite colors because they pretty much just got given hand me downs.
Jon gets more bird motif - wing shaped cloak, bird embroidery - since Rhea saw more of her house in him/he looks more vale like. Rhaegar gets some, with the long flowy cloak, but it's half-assed. There is not a single way to pretend that boy is not a Targaryen.
Jon still dresses like its winter - you will not see him in shorts ever. No human alive has ever seen his legs. Rhaegar on the other hand wears lighter stuff, since he grew up in Kingslanding and that would be what he's used to.
Tumblr media
I was going to do the dragon headed tunics for this, but then I realized that would require drawing tiny little Targaryen emblems and I thought I wouldn't survive that.
Jon looking very knightly + everything but the cloak would be very easy to fight in. Easy to rip that off and get to killin for his brother.
Rhaegar having the open sleeves of the vale still, like how he still feels Raymar in there/is still grieving while Jon has moved entirely on with no more vale fashion.
Long hair!! Whipee!!
Both of them wearing a more modern Targ style - based off of Viserys (Dany's viserys not old man viserys) in s1 to reflect some of their modern sensibilities.
Jon wears a lot, and I mean a lot of leather. The vest? Leather. The undershirt? Leather. Cloak is heavy wool. He wouldn't feel like himself if he wasn't lugging around a mountain of heavy, winter worthy fabrics. Rhaegar on the other hand has much lighter clothes, more flowy. Some jewelry too. So pretty much Jon is roasting in Kingslanding heat and Rhaegar is living his very best ventilated silk life.
(Rhaegar's outfit is probably gonna get tweaked as it feels too simple. Not nearly enough pizzaz thrusted upon him by Daemon trying to make up for the years spent in the 'simple' clothing of the vale.)
I'll probably make some more outfits for them eventually - definitely if they go other places! I really enjoyed analyzing different regional styles and incorporating that. Someday I might even make those dreaded dragon headed tunics.

The rumors surrounding the twins at Winterfell are going to be INSANE. Because they were clearly raised as nobles, which means that 1) since such good treatment of bastards is more common in Dorne, their likely mother is the secretly living Ashara Dayne, who faked her death to avoid disgrace (I doubt a dornish woman would do that, but people tend to judge by themselves 2) Ned cheated not just with some poor peasant girl, he dishonored a lady 3) Ned after the Greyjoy rebellion found time to sail to Dorne, made children there and return home.
The situation with Jon can still be somehow justified: Ned had just lost his father and brother, he didn't know Catelyn well enough to know each other - he didn't hold back, but then he was ashamed and took responsibility as much as he could. But the twins? No excuse.
I feel really bad for Jon, Robb, and especially Catelyn right now.
The only thing that throws off the Ashara theory would be Raymar's silver-blond hair, since she was dark-haired and purple-eyed. HOWEVER, we do have Edric Dayne with his light hair and purplish eyes, so it's possible that light hair runs in the family? It's unclear in canon whether his hair comes from his father or his mother.
The weirder thing would be Ashara faking her death (quite funny that both this and the Rhaella explanation that Ned believes involve a woman faking her death so that she's alive to have the twins). Hopefully Ned and the twins discuss who their mother is under the "Ned's bastards" cover story.
Other possible mothers would be a commoner of Lys/Tyrosh/Pentos/etc origin who has the correct coloring but wouldn't explain their highborn manners, or a highborn woman from Dragonstone from one of the noble families there that still have Valyrian coloring.
But Dorne does make for a reasonable explanation for sure.
For the twins, it could be that their mother chose not to tell Ned as the reason he didn't claim them, but I don't think people will be giving him the benefit of the doubt at this moment in time...

Rei and Mao as Abang None ambassador. If you lost, you can read more about Abang None and learn about its history and their outfit role. (Don't forget to use page translate since they are not in English.). Betawi ethnic got its influence from Chinese culture too, that's why i choose them for this fan art. I keep smiling when i draw this. They look super cute.

Wills do in fact exist in the world of Westeros. And more specifically they’ve been plot points in regards to chosen heirs. Robb Stark has an entire debate with Catelyn about choosing his heir. Sansa is ostensibly his heir with Bran and Rickon considered deceased. And yet Robb and Catelyn believe they can skip over Sansa by naming another heir. Why would they believe this possible if there isn’t precedent for a King choosing his heirs ?
“Young, and a king,” he said. “A king must have an heir. If I should die in my next battle, the kingdom must not die with me. By law Sansa is next in line of succession, so Winterfell and the north would pass to her.” His mouth tightened. “To her, and her lord husband. Tyrion Lannister. I cannot allow that. I will not allow that. That dwarf must never have the north.”
“No,” Catelyn agreed. “You must name another heir, until such time as Jeyne gives you a son.” She considered a moment. “Your father’s father had no siblings, but his father had a sister who married a younger son of Lord Raymar Royce, of the junior branch. They had three daughters, all of whom wed Vale lordlings. A Waynwood and a Corbray, for certain. The youngest... it might have been a Templeton, but...”
“Arya’s gone, the same as Bran and Rickon, and they’ll kill Sansa too once the dwarf gets a child from her. Jon is the only brother that remains to me. Should I die without issue, I want him to succeed me as King in the North. I had hoped you would support my choice.”
We also know that even lords can also seemingly choose their heirs and even have stipulations for those heirs. Why ? Because it’s actually a plot point in The Sworn Sword. Rohanne Webber (Tywin Lannister’s paternal grandmother) is her father’s named heir but there’s a stipulation, she has to be married or she will lose her rights to inheritance and it will instead go to her cousin Wendell Webber:
“Her lord father’s will demands it. Lord Wyman wanted grandsons to carry on his line. When he sickened he tried to wed her to the Longinch, so he might die knowing that she had a strong man to protect her, but Rohanne refused to have him. His lordship took his vengeance in his will. If she remains unwed on the second anniversary of her father’s passing, Coldmoat and its lands pass to his cousin Wendell.”
How is that a possible stipulation that Rohanne takes extremely seriously if not for the fact that inheritance is not clear cut and can be overridden by a will ? And this evidences further that a Lord or King can choose their own heirs.
Maegor disinherited Jaehaerys and made Rhaena’s daughter, Aerea, his heir.
Jaehaerys went against Andal inheritance tradition to pick Baelon over Rhaenys.
The lords at the Great Council doubled down on that decision by picking Viserys over Laenor which Jaehaerys upheld.
Aegon III’s regents pick Rhaena as his heir over Baela, despite the fact that Baela is the elder twin, because she’s too willful and wild and won’t accept a marriage pact they made for her.
Jeyne Arryn picks a distant cousin to be her heir instead of a closer relative with more traditional claim, the King’s regents back her decision.
Aerys II picked Viserys to be his heir when Rhaegar’s son Aegon was the traditional choice.
Doran Martell planned to make his son Quentyn his heir because he wanted his daughter Arianna to be queen conosrt of the Seven Kingdoms, she doesn’t know this and just assumes he’s pick Quentyn over her.
Walder Frey talks about picking his unborn son as his heir over his dozen or so adult sons.
Rodrick Harlaw offers to make Asha his heir to stop her from participating in the Kingsmoot.
Stannis offered to make Renly his heir instead of Shireen.
You will love this video by the former ozymalek, anon (now they are Youtube and Tiktok's "PhoenixAshes"). It basically speaks of exactly what you emphasize for Westeros--how heir voluntary designation was a real thing in real medieval Europe.
