🎃Happy 7th Day of Halloween! I’ll be sharing one of my favorite spooktacular things to watch each day of October. TODAY’S FRANTASTIC FRIGHT: It's no secret that I have a personal connection to the sitcom Speechless. It was an amazing experience to see a family like mine on TV. Special needs families of all varieties finally had representation--and the show was smart, compassionate and funny without being sappy, exploitive, or mean. The cancellation of Speechless hit me on another level because it was on both a personal and creative level. I wanted to write for this show more than anything and I was so proud of my original specs for it. I'll always be sad that I never got to contribute something to this beautiful little world that Scott Silveri brought to life. The Speechless episode "H-A-L-HALLOWEEN" serves classic sitcom, Halloween fun and it's impressive that a show could pull something like this off in their first season. Many series spend their entire freshman season--and sometimes even part of their sophomore season, too-- trying to understand and establishing the show's identity. Ironically, Speechless never needed time to find its voice because it knew exactly who it was from the beginning. Each episode is thoughtfully and cleverly written, as well as executed. It's selfl-awareness and knack for satire made this show both witty and heartwarming without getting cheesey or sugar-coated. Too many shows today are so preoccupied trying to sell its audience something that they never bring anything original to the table. This series never had that problem. It was never preachy and its personality made it one of a kind. It still has stories to tell but we'll unfortunately never see them.
