Ranji trophy | Saurashtra’s win a culmination of its rich cricketing history
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/ranji-trophy-saurashtras-win-a-culmination-of-its-rich-cricketing-history/
Ranji trophy | Saurashtra’s win a culmination of its rich cricketing history
Carrying on a long legacy from the time of the British rule, the friendly and hospitable Saurashtrians finally experienced a dream come true when Jaydev Unadkat lifted the Ranji Trophy for the first time by beating Bengal at home here on March 13.
After the erstwhile Nawanagar (the previous version of Saurashtra) won the Ranji Trophy — which was named after the legendary Ranjitsinhji of Jamnagar — way back in 1936-37, incidentally beating Bengal, its cricket administration went through a lot of changes before the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) came into being in the 1950s.
Renowned cricketers
Over the years, the region has produced several renowned cricketers — including Duleepsinhji, L. Amarsinh, L. Ramji, Vinoo Mankad, Salim Durrani, Dhiraj Parsana, Karsan Ghavri, Ravindra Jadeja, Unadkat and Cheteshwar Pujara — and takes pride in its rich cricketing history.
Pujara, who was part of the winning squad, said,
“This victory means a lot to me. For the entire team and the region, this is special. It means a lot to my father, who has played the Ranji Trophy. For generations to follow, it will give them belief,” said Pujara.
For former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Niranjan Shah and his son Jaydev, the Ranji Trophy triumph was a lifetime achievement.
“Earlier, our players used to migrate to other States. During Jaydev’s captaincy (for 12 years), he held back the players to build a team.
“Our effort to groom talented under-19 players for Ranji Trophy also helped,” said Niranjan.
Evolution
Jaydev, the current SCA president, elaborated how he built a solid unit. “Once, we were No. 28 among 30 teams. Then we became the Plate division champion, came to Elite, qualified for knockouts and ultimately became a Ranji champion.
“I ensured that players were picked purely on the basis of performance without any discrimination and showed faith in them. That’s how we got an experienced side. You need experience to win Ranji Trophy.
“I kept some senior players in the leadership group before deciding to hand over captaincy to Unadkat. The transition was smooth.
“Every small thing was taken care of. Getting such top class infrastructure (at the SCA) also helped,” said Jaydev.
Former captain and coach Sitanshu Kotaka, who spent 27 years with the side, said, “A good unit, which was developed over the years, has made this possible. It’s a proud moment for all of us,” said Kotak.
Coach Karsan Ghavri said, “Except Unadkat and Pujara, it is a team of normal Ranji Trophy players. For five-six of them it was like religion.”
Sujitkumar Bose, a Rajkot-based former journalist and a keen follower of Saurashtra cricket, said the achievement was a matter of pride. “The SCA started from almost nothing. Saurashtra becoming the Ranji champion is an emotional moment for the region,” said Bose.

Boult from the blue: Can New Zealand swinger Trent upset odds and outshine India’s Jasprit Bumrah?
When India meets New Zealand
But with Old Trafford expected that he would spend the whole day under the cloud can prove another fight just as relevant: the diabolical yorkers of Jasprit Bumrah against the cunning left-handed swing of Trent Boult. If one of the players hits early and often, his team can go to Heer on July 14.
According to the manual, this first semifinal should not even be around. India, which was at the top of the group list, only lost to England, while New Zealand lost the last three. It would have been the Carlos Brathwaite of four West Indians, who had not been denied here by Boult here in Manchester.

And while India, before eleven, was not dependent on the runs of Kohli, five of which have been weakened by Rohit Sharma & # 39; s World Cup record five hundred, the New Zealanders have been extremely grateful to the stylish Williamson, who has scored 30 percent of his runs and averages 96.
Yet Boult, along with the fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, back after missing England's defeat to Chester-le-Street on Wednesday due to injury
The group game between these parties Nottingham was raining, but when they met in The Oval for a warm-up match at the end of May, Boult won four for 33 –
Boult also had a hat trick during the defeat of his side by Australia at Lord & # 39; s, and among sailors who have sent at least 50 victories in this World Cup, his economy rate of 4.68 has been improved by just one man.
The problem is that this man is Bumrah, who is only 4.48 an over-amazing figure for a player who operates primarily in the powerplay and in the event of death, and who summons up his yorker as he pleases. on a lot of hard work, but others have also subsided, without being able to replicate his threat.

Maybe he can thank his upbringing. When his mother wanted an afternoon nap, young Bumrah – who liked to practice in the front room – discovered that I made the least noise when the ball hit the plinth.
His skills are the main reason that Kohli felt that & # 39; our bowling attack was there with the best, if not the best, bowling attack in the competition & # 39 ;. With left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja likely to keep his place after a tight performance against Sri Lanka on Saturday, he has a point.
New Zealand will then have its game as they have to improve their record of a win in seven previous World Cup semi-final. Their last two games yielded a total of 157 against Australia and 186 against England, and they have passed 250 only once throughout the tournament.
India, on the other hand, has reached the top of victory four times, declaring Sharma & # 39; s purple spot that convinces Kohli – the greatest white batsman in the game's history -: & # 39; currently the ODI player in the world. & # 39;
Things can become interesting if both Sharma – who has
Debate has focused mainly on the waning forces of MS Dhoni, who has been dropped five times by butter-fingered field players – and Kohli fails, causing a middle order is put under pressure that does not meet the usual standards of India. turned 38 on Sunday and came under fire because he hung up too early during the chase against England in Edgbaston.
For Williamson, there is also the small issue of clearing a score.
India won, with Kohli 43 made the 37 for Williamson. To make matters worse for the last time he and Kohli were opposition captains in the semi-final of the World Cup in 2008, the Under-19 tournament in Malaysia was. Asia Cup Final: India Defeats Bangladesh In A Last-Ball Thriller
New Delhi: A severely hamstrung Kedar Jadhav ran the most defining single of his short international career as India beat Bangladesh by three wickets to win their seventh Asia Cup title in a pulsating last-ball finish.
Chasing a modest target of 222, India made a rough weather of the chase at 160 for five with Jadhav (23 no) initially retiring after pulling his right hamstring only to comeback when it mattered the most.
He came in the 48th over with India still needing 11 runs. With six runs needed off the last over, Jadhav and Kuldeep Yadav kept their cool against Mahmudullah Riyadh taking three singles and double off the first five balls.
The part-time off-spinner drifted the final delivery onto Jadhav's legs as it brushed his pads for a leg bye to ensure India maintained its supremacy among continental neighbours.
The win also establishes Rohit Sharma's leadership skills having won the Nidahas T20 tri-nation earlier and now the Asia Cup while providing a healing touch after the Test series drubbing in England.
Buvneshwar Kumar (21) and Ravindra Jadeja (23) also played their part after middle-order led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni once again failed to perform.
It was Bhuvneshwar's six off Rubel Hossain in the 46th over followed by a bounday off Mustafizur Rahman in the 47th that eased the pressure put due to the balls consumed by the former India skipper.
India started the chase with Shikhar Dhawan (15) and Rohit Sharma (48, 55 balls) helping themselves to a boundary each off Mehidy Hasan Miraz's off-break. However tournament's top scorer Dhawan couldn't clear the mid-off fielder trying to hoist left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam.
Ambati Rayudu, who ha not performed against the top teams failed again making it 46 for 2.
In-form skipper Rohit continued from where he had left against Pakistan as he lofted Nazmul for a six over long-on. A short-arm pull off Mustafizur Rahman and a hook off Rubel Hossain also got him two more sixes a India were cruising along at 83 for two.
It was another short ball from Rubel that Rohit tried to pull but found the fielder at the square leg boundary.
Dinesh Karthik (37) hit a six but looked edgy during his 61 ball stay before being yorked when Mahmudullah Riyadh rifled one in after 54-run stand with Dhoni (36, 67 balls).
Dhoni is a shadow of his old self and consumed a lot of balls, hitting three boundaries in between. However Kedar Jadhav (19, 20 balls) hit a straight six off Mahmudullah but then pulled his right hamstring going for a quick single.
He was in considerable pain after that and Dhoni who was just getting into the groove lost his rhythm and edged one off Mustafizur Rahman to Mushfiqur Rahim behind the stumps.
Once Dhoni was gone, things became troublesome for India at 160 for five as Kedar continued to hobble.
He was finally instructed to get off the field as his presence was hampering the other batsmen from taking quick singles or twos.
Earlier, India's unorthodox spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Kedar Jadhav wreaked havoc after opener Liton Das's fine hundred as Bangladesh were bowled out for a modest 222 after being put in to bat.
An injury-ravaged Bangladesh made a flying start, courtesy Liton's maiden ODI hundred (121 off 117 balls), as he added 120 runs with fellow opener Mehidy Hasan Miraz (32).
Just when it looked like Bangladesh would make a match of it, things went downhill as India's tiny neighbours suffered an all-too-familiar batting collapse, losing 10 wickets for 102 runs. The innings lasted 48.3 overs.
Chinaman Kuldeep's 3 for 45 was well complemented by Kedar's 2/41 in nine overs of unconventional off-breaks, as Bangladesh frittered away the initiative with poor shot selection.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's smart work behind the stumps also played its part as much as Ravindra Jadeja's electric fielding inside the 30-yard circle.
Promoting lower-order batsman Miraz as opener was a masterstroke by skipper Mashrafe Mortaza, who wanted to preserve his regular opener Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar.
Miraz did his job perfectly by dropping anchor as Liton hit a flurry of boundaries off Jasprit Bumrah (1/39) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Anything on his legs was dispatched to the boundary.
When Yuzvendra Chahal (1/31 in 8 overs) was introduced, he was hit over deep mid-wicket for a six, as India found it difficult to get a breakthrough.
However, things changed once Miraz was caught by Ambati Rayudu in the cover region off Kedar's bowling.
The moment Kedar started bowling his side-arm off-breaks, Bangladesh couldn't force the pace as he mixed his deliveries well. He bowled an impressive 28 dot balls.
Imrul Kayes (2) was adjudged leg-before off Chahal and the in-form Mushfiqur Rahim (2) pulled a rank half-tracker from Kedar straight into the deep mid-wicket's hands.
From 120 for no loss, Bangladesh slumped to 137 for three and things went from bad to worse from thereon.

Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings: Sanju Samson leads Royals to 16-run win | Cricket News

Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings: Sanju Samson leads Royals to 16-run win | Cricket News
An evening like the one in Sharjah on Tuesday makes you wonder why Sanju Samson hasn’t played more than four T20 internationals for India. Against a strong Chennai Super Kings (CSK) unit, Samson enthralled with an innings of 74 from just 32 balls to help Rajasthan Royals (RR) reach a commanding 216 for 7 from 20 overs. The total was more than enough as Royals opened their account with a 16-run victory. The more watchful Steve Smith contributed 69 (47b) while Jofra Archer (27 not out off 8 balls) rubbed salt into CSK wounds by hitting Lungi Ngidi for four sixes in the final over. Scorecard In response, Faf du Plessis tried his best for CSK with 72 from 37 balls. MS Dhoni, meanwhile, didn’t help himself by coming in at No. 7. He finished with an unbeaten 29 from 17 balls and hit three sixes, but it was too little, too late. Samson’s innings, though, was perfectly timed. During his whirlwind effort, the 25-year-old sent the ball soaring into the night sky on nine occasions. Samson, of course, has made big scores for Royals in the past but hasn’t yet had the kind of prolific season needed to make himself a permanent fixture of India’s starting XI. He will be hoping that this is his season.
Sanju Samson is our Man of the Match for his stupendous knock of 74 off 32 deliveries.#Dream11IPL #RRvCSK https://t.co/spO1yTZRx2

The Royals were actually circumspect to begin with, moving along to 26/1 in 4 overs. In the fifth over, though, Samson decided to tee off against Sam Curran and punished the Englishman’s short deliveries for a four and six. With the pace of the pitch to his liking and smaller boundary dimensions on offer, Samson’s stunning onslaught began even as Smith was happy to play second fiddle. Even the easing of the field restrictions did not bring any respite for CSK. Despite Dhoni introducing his experienced spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla into the attack, there was no stopping the Kerala batsman. Samson greeted Chawla with three cleanly-struck sixes as the leggie’s first over went for 28 runs. Samson also brought up his half-century from just 19 balls – his fastest in the IPL – in the process.
CSK pulled things back a bit after Samson’s dismissal. Archer, however, smashed Lungi Ngidi for four sixes in the final over, which yielded 30 runs, to ensure RR finished strongly. While Watson (33, 21 balls) began CSK’s run chase promisingly with four sixes in the first six overs, his downfall was brought about in the seventh over while trying to hit another maximum. M Vijay (21, 21b), Sam Curran (17, 6b) and debutant Ruturaj Gaikwad (0, 1b) – replacing Ambati Rayudu who was not fully fit – perished in quick succession thereafter. Gaikwad didn’t do himself any favour with the manner of his dismissal, as he stepped out to leggie Rahul Tewatia off his very first delivery and was duly stumped. Curran’s promotion to counter Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal in the RR set-up was understandable, but Dhoni should have ideally walked in ahead of Ruturaj and Kedar Jadhav. Especially given that he hasn’t had time in the middle since the World Cup last year, it would have been prudent for him to get his eye in before going for his shots.

Asia Cup 2018: Rohit And Jadeja Shine, As India Defeats Bangladesh By 8 Wickets
New Delhi: India dished out another comprehensive performance to thrash Bangladesh by seven wickets in a Super Four stage match of the Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium here on Friday.
Skipper Rohit Sharma led India from the front with a fluent unbeaten half-century to overhaul the paltry target of 174 with more than 13 overs to spare, after the men-in-blue rode on left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja's magical spell of 4/29 on winning the toss and opting to chase. The defending champions were off to a brilliant start once again with Rohit (83 not out off 104 balls; 5X4, 6X3) and Shikhar Dhawan (40 off 47; 4X4, 6X1) putting on 61 runs before the southpaw was trapped leg-before by left-armer Shakib Al Hasan in the 15th over.
Thereafter, Rohit and new man Ambati Rayudu (13) added 45 runs for the second wicket before the No.3 batsman was caught behind off pacer Rubel Hossain.
With India cruising to an easy victory, former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33 off 37; 4X3) was promoted up the order and the talismanic wicketkeeper-batsman played the perfect second fiddle to the skipper, who clobbered Shakib for three sixes, one among those to get to his 36th ODI fifty.
Dhoni soon joined the party, belting two consecutive boundaries off skipper Mashrafe Mortaza to raise India's 150 and also the 50-run stand for the third wicket.
Mortaza, however, avenged the thrashing with the wicket of the stumper, who in an attempt to finish off the innings with a six, gifted his wicket away with India just four runs shy of victory.
Dinesh Karthik (1 not out) then joined his skipper to complete the formalities in style.
Earlier, Jadeja, playing his first ODI since July 2017, wreaked havoc among the Bangladeshi middle-order that comprised the key wickets of Shakib Al Hasan (17), Mushfiqur Rahim (21), Mohammad Mithun (9) and Mosaddek Hossain (12), to help India restrict the opposition for a paltry 173, centred mainly around a 66-run eighth wicket stand between lower-order batsmen Mehidy Hasan (42) and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza (26).
Jadeja was complimented well by the pace duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/32) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/37).
Put in to bat, Bangladesh immediately found themselves on the backfoot after Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah removed the openers Liton Das (7) and Nazmul Hossain Shanto (7), respectively, with just 16 runs on the board.
Thereafter, Jadeja spun his magic around the Bangladesh batsmen which reduced them to 65/5 by the 18th over, before Mahmudullah (25) and Mosaddek steered the total past the 100-run mark with a brief 36-run sixth wicket stand.
Towards the end, Mehidy and Mashrafe batted sensibly to take the side past the 150-run mark even as the Indian bowlers came back well to restrict them to a below-par score.
Brief Scores
Bangladesh: 173 (Mehidy Hasan 42, Mashrafe Mortaza 26; Ravindra Jadeja 4/29, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/32, Jasprit Bumrah 3/37) lose to India: 174/3 (Rohit Sharma 83 not out, Shikhar Dhawan 40, M.S Dhoni 33) by 7 wickets.

India VS England: England Defeats India By 118 Runs, Win Five-Match Test Series 4-1
New Delhi: Opener Lokesh Rahul and Rishabh Pant's heroics went in vain as England defeated India by 118 runs in the fifth and final Test to clinch the series 4-1 at the Oval here on Tuesday.
With India chasing a massive 463-run target, the last day of the series saw a bit of drama as centuries by Lokesh Rahul and Rishabh Pant gave India a slim hope of clinching, or at least saving, the Test.
Rahul played a fighting knock of 149 runs before a spectacular delivery by England spinner Moeen Ali ended his resistance.
Pant, who scored 114, gave him excellent support from the other end as the duo built up a partnership of 204 runs to frustrate the England bowlers for a long time.
However, their fall bought the hosts back in contest and the English bowlers then made no mistake as they performed the last rites with ease, scalping the remaining three Indian wickets of Ravindra Jadeja (13), Ishant Sharma (5) and Mohammed Shami (0) in quick succession.
For England, James Anderson picked up three wickets for 45 runs while Sam Curran and Adil Rashid bagged two wickets each.
It was a memorable day for Anderson as the England pacer's second innings figures of 4/63 saw him go past Australian legend Glenn McGrath to take the fourth spot on the list of all-time highest Test wicket takers.
Anderson, who now has 564 Test wickets to his name, is leading McGrath by one wicket. He is preceded on the list by Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble.
After losing the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord's, the visitors managed to win the third Test in Tentbridge. However, they went down in the remaining two contests to complete a miserable series which was totally dominated by the hosts.
India had last won a series on English soil way back in 2007 when the Rahul Dravid-led side had managed a 1-0 win over the hosts in a three-Test affair.
India had started the fifth Test on a promising note as they had reduced England to 181/7 in their first innings on the opening day before the hosts recovered to post a healthy 332.
India had managed to post 292 runs in their first innings before England piled up a mammoth 423/8 to hand India a challenging target.
On Tuesday, the final day of the fifth Test, India started the proceedings at 58/3.
Overnight batsmen Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 106 balls) and Rahul showed tremendous resistance against the English bowlers by taking India past the 100-run mark.
However, just when everything was going India's way, Moeen Ali struck to send back Rahane as an across the line sweep by the batsman fell into the hands of Keaton Jennings in front of square, which left the visitors at 120/4.
Debutant Hanuma Vihari, who had notched up his maiden half-century in the first innings, fell cheaply after contributing just one run.
A short-pitch delivery by Ben Stokes kissed Vihari's outside edge before landing in the gloves of Jonny Bairstow, putting India in deep trouble.
Later, incoming batsman Pant along with Rahul prevented the English bowlers from making any further inroads into the Indian camp, after the hosts had jolted them with two quick wickets in the morning session.
It was the duo's fearless batting which helped India go close to the 300-run mark without losing any further wicket.
A brilliant fightback by Rahul and Pant kept England at bay as India reached 298/5 at tea.
At the break, Rahul was batting on 142, while Pant, who was on 101, gave him excellent support from the other end.
The duo's sixth wicket partnership of 177 runs not only kept the English bowlers struggling, but also gave India a slim hope of clinching the Test as the visitors now needed 166 runs in the final session, which made the contest interesting.
This was the fifth century of Rahul's Test career. The opener, who hit 19 boundaries and a six off the 216 balls he has faced so far, was the epitome of patience and grit during India's second innings.
Pant, meanwhile, slammed his first Test ton after facing 117 balls and slamming 14 fours and three sixes over the course of his knock. In the 74th over, the Delhi batsman slog-swept a Moeen Ali delivery over deep mid-on to become the first-ever Indian wicket-keeper to score a Test century in England.
The scenario, however, changed in the final session when Rashid's magical delivery came from the leg-stump to dislodge Rahul's off-stump, breaking the 204-run partnership and leaving India at 325/6.
With the addition of just three runs in the visitor's scorecard, Rashid struck again, this time to send back the other settled batsman -- Pant. The Indian stumper while looking for a quick run handed an easy catch to Ali at the long-off.
Curran then gave two back-to-back blows to India, dismissing Ishant and Jadeja, while Anderson packed Shami back to finally crush the visitors' 11 long years' dream of winning a Test series in England.
Brief scores:England: 332 & 423/8 declared vs India: 292 & 345 (Lokesh Rahul 149, Rishabh Pant 114; James Anderson 3/45).
