Breaking my hiatus to put together a goth inspired lookbook because the official Sims kit - WOOF. The goth culture has so many varied and cool sub-cultures, so I chose some of my favourites to showcase today.

Cybergoth is the probably the most unique aesthetic when it comes to goth sub-cultures; marrying goth, raver and cyberpunk fashion into a wholly unique style. It's typified by the pairing of stark black with highly contrasting neons and brights. Both hairstyles and make up are highly intricate.

Nu Goth is one of the most accessible forms of goth fashion. It is a lot more sleek and modern, with less decorative elements and more understated details. It incorporates everyday clothing pieces, albeit in a darker colour palette than "normal" fashion.

Default & Custom AF Bon Voyage Retro Sunglasses

Personally, I've never used these sunglasses before. They look more like goggles than sunglasses to me, and if I wanted a sim to wear goggles I'd just use the raver ones from NL or the pilot ones from OFB.

To give myself a reason to put these to use, I came up with some recolors that I like a bit better.

You can choose between using the default version or custom version, or you can use both at the same time if you want. There's also 2 additional recolors that only come as custom versions.

NOTE: For some reason, the Retro sunglasses (these) and the Designer sunglasses share a TXTR for the lens.

I don't mean they share an identical texture, I mean EAxis put the texture for the Retro lens and the texture for the Designer lens next to each other in the same image and used a single TXTR file for both sunglasses. So I'm technically defaulting the Designer lenses by defaulting the Retro lenses, but I didn't change anything about them.

Also, even though there are 4 options for the Retro sunglasses, there are only 3 TXTRs for the lenses. 2 of them share the same lens, with the only difference being the color of the frame (one is black and one is green).

I didn't want to use any other frame colors besides black, so unfortunately that means 2 of the Retro sunglasses will look identical with my default.

There is only 1 actual TXTR file for the frames in my default though, which is the "Cream" version, and the rest of the sunglasses are repositoried to that one.

Any tips for a newbie raver? (been to festivals and clubs but new to actual rave parties) maybe an essentials list?

Hiii omg im so glad you asked!! I appreciate the support <3

1. When I go to a rave I always bring 1 friend or more because the more you know the better !

Even though raving is all about PLUR (peace, love, unity, respect) in such environments creeps tend to take advantage of others. However don’t get discouraged you can still meet great people at raves that really make good friends.

2. This is an optional tip if you consume other substances than alcohol. Be careful if you are going to buy from a dealer you don’t know at the rave, that’s why I always have what I want with me before the rave so I avoid getting scammed.

OBS: If you already have the drug of choice stash it on your body and not in your bag before going out, assuming that the substance is not allowed where you live.

3. Come prepared. Bring a small bag where you can keep a charger/power-bank, headphones. Because if you are leaving the rave alone it can get quite sad or lonely so music can help. But that is just personal preference. Also have water with you always, in case the rave doesn’t provide that for free !!!! Having chapstick and tissue is always a good thing. Some people bring sunglasses to raves, personally I never do because they always get fogged up and so I get very minimal vision. Always good to bring gum with you.

4. I know that when you think rave, you see a bunch of people dressed very cool. I’m not saying you can’t be stylish however, think about comfort as well when you dress. Because Im assuming it’s a rave that starts at around 23:00 and ends at around maybe 7 am.

However dress how you want !!! If you dress for style rather than comfort go for it!!! I tend to dress for comfort because I love to danceee <3

Raves is a judgement free zone so go in with a happy and nice attitude!

Raver Levi headcanons while I walk to the shuttle:

Keeps an extra pair of high quality earplugs because he knows someone in the group is bound to forget theirs.

Carries a small fanny pack but manages to fit a shocking amount of things in it: chapstick, earplugs, eye drops, some form of painkillers, icy hot, sunscreen, wipes

Wears basic but very functional clothing. Built the be comfortable in the heat or any cold weather.

Wears sunglasses and tends to chew gum a lot too. His go to gum flavor is spearmint

Darren, Quinni, and Amerie are making their plans for Mardi Gras, which seems to be a pretty different thing in Australia because they basically just go to a drag ball at a nightclub. Amerie is happy to get MDMA but baffled that Darren has invited the dealer along. Quinni immediately gets it and exclaims: “You like Cash!” Darren: “Ew no I don’t!”

They relent: “I don’t know what’s going on, so I invited him to find out.” Amerie starts cheerfully making fun of Darren for liking Cash.

Later we see Darren and Cash walking around the library and giggling. The two of them decide to skip class.

My favorite brick joke, part one: Cash checks on the bag and it’s gone. He’s clearly stressed out. Darren asks if the eshays are going to... and mimes shooting someone in the mouth. Cash teases them: “what, fingerbang my face? I hope not. Yeah, it’ll be all right.”

At Harry’s that night, Darren runs out to give Cash a bag of food with cash hidden in the bag to pay for their MDMA, which Cash will bring the next night. Cash is using a lot of slang that Darren doesn’t understand, not really looking at them.

The little eshay comes out into the lot and summons Cash to talk to Chook, who’s hanging out behind the restaurant. Darren mocks the kid, who’s tiny but deadly serious and hypermasculine. Cash doesn’t respond. The kid looks Darren over and says to Cash, “what a fucking flamer,” and walks away.

Darren turns to Cash with a disbelieving smile but Cash still has a totally blank/frozen look on his face and doesn’t say anything. Darren’s smile fades away. They fake-smile in acknowledgment and leave.

Cash goes behind the restaurant where Chook is telling off the kid for not bringing him his kombucha. Cash and Chook lean against the car and Chook asks about the bag. Cash starts giving vague/nothing responses and…

WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT THIS LINE…

…Chook mocks him by pretending to stutter and says “I can’t understand you, you sound like a methhead.”!!!

Cash nervously admits that the bag was stolen, and promises to get the money back for Chook. He gives Chook the money he got from Darren.

The kid brings back Chook’s drink and Chook throws it at him because he wanted a different flavor. The kid complains about the drink getting on his TNs. Chook advances on the kid but Cash gets in between them and tries to defend the kid.

This is too much for Chook and he punches Cash in the face. He grabs Cash by the head/neck and threatens to curb stomp him for insubordination, all while Cash keeps the same blank expression. Chook finally releases him and throws the bag of food at him as he walks away. He yells at the other eshays to get in the car, multiple times, as they’re all hesitant to get in the car with him.

Later Cash is getting out of the shower and checking out his black eye in the mirror and crying. He puts sunglasses on to cover it.

Darren, Amerie, and Quinni are pregaming. Darren and Amerie complain about straight men. Darren complains about not understanding Cash’s slang.

Favorite brick joke, part two: Darren asks about the black eye:

Cash: It’s just Chook.

Darren: I thought you were friends.

Cash: We are.

Darren: Well your friends are…

Cash: Gronks. But I grew up with them.

Darren pauses, accepts this, and says, “well at least you didn’t get finger-fucked in the face.” Cash: “No…I got fisted.” Little rueful smile. RIP Darren and me.

There’s a cute montage of the kids pregaming and Darren trying to dress up Malakai and Cash for the event. Cash’s outfit is a wifebeater and a pink g-string over his head to cover his black eye. We see Malakai and Darren dancing and Cash is just happily watching Darren. The kids all take a picture together and Cash doesn’t pose but just watches Darren posing.

When they're outside the club, Cash is trying to stand behind Darren in line to hide from the cops. Inside, Darren is bemused by Cash’s raver dancing which consists of…punching the air?

Darren competes in the ball and Cash is thrilled and supportive! (I also love how Quinni gets so hyped that she tries to climb up on the stage.) But just when he’s about to talk to them, Jacob appears and hugs Darren. Darren’s surprised and doesn’t really hug back, but the two of them make small talk.

Cash is…jealous? He walks away from the whole group, only to walk right into Jayden (one of the eshays) dealing at the club. Cash is scared and takes the underwear off his head. Jayden sees him, but expresses sympathy about Chook punching Cash, and Cash is relieved by Jayden’s apparent acceptance of Cash being at the event.

Then Darren comes and finds him, annoyed that he wasn’t there when they finished dancing. Cash says, “You were talking to that other lad. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

Darren needs a minute to even understand what Cash is talking about, and reassures him that they're not into Jacob.

Cash apologizes and says “Let me make it up to you,” which he does by stealing a giant glowing paper mache penis from a drag queen. The two of them run away from her, laughing and holding hands. When they stop, Cash is staring dopily at Darren and asks to kiss them.

The shot of their first kiss is great: we see their faces in silhouette, against the lights of the club, and then when they kiss their faces block the light. It gets across the idea that this connection feels life-altering, like it blocks everything else out. After making out for a while they pull back and hug each other and we see a shot of each of them smiling privately to themself.

We see them dancing and grinning at each other later. They don’t seem to be with the group when Malakai is attacked.

In the montage at the end we see them sitting, talking and kissing by the water.

Thoughts:

Good first kiss and everything, but the biggest thing is the reveal of how bad Cash’s predicament is.

Again, not sure how it reads to an Australian audience, but for me there’s a slow build of Chook and the gang being scary instead of comedic. The third episode is the first time we spend a lot of time with Cash, and the eshays aren’t likable, but they seem to be having fun together. We even see them all shit-talking each other during the robbery as if they’re on equal footing.

In this episode it turns very quickly, from Chook whining about his kombucha (which seems funny at first), to being ready to hurt the kid over it and punching/threatening Cash.

We see Cash, clearly scared of Chook, calling him “brother” and it just…does not feel good. It casts all the moments we’ve already seen of Cash smiling and joking with Chook in a different light. Like how much is that just survival?

And the little kid! At first it seems funny that this little kid is in a gang and takes it so seriously. No, this kid is being abused. (Plus the implication that Cash started at the same age.)

Cash’s blank expressions in the scene are interesting. Later he says that he “froze” when the eshays put Harper in the car. It's like he just freezes as a trauma/survival response for getting through scary situations with the eshays.

Also, Darren never calls Cash out on not defending them from the little eshay! They have weird standards, as we’ll see.

It’s kinda interesting that Cash (justifiably) panics about losing the bag, but then makes fun of Darren for their concern and reassures them nothing will happen, brushing over the fact that he was visibly upset about it. He's a pretty convincing liar, which makes sense—he’s had to play up to Chook for years.

I thought it was cool of Darren to just accept and move on from the black eye conversation. It’s obviously fucked up but they accept that that’s how Cash sees things.

Of course I stan the boat scene, but even if we had never gotten any more background than we got in s1, the show did a great job very quickly sketching in Cash’s dynamic with the eshays. He knows they suck but he grew up with them. He was a kid. He has an attachment to them, but he’s also scared to leave.

On a much more trivial note, what exactly did Cash think was going on with Darren and Jacob? They clearly hadn’t seen each other in a while. I always disliked that Cash got so sulky about another guy just talking to Darren but I’m convincable.

Also it’s a shame that we don’t see the giant penis again. The two of them should have it in their room at their new apartment.

personality description :: to anyone else, nate seems like a normal teenager: a troublemaking little shit who causes mischief and chaos wherever he goes regardless who it’ll end up affecting. in truth, his actions come from a sore lack of attention, prompting him to act out as a way of gaining people’s attention. this has morphed into a practical joker attitude; max plays pranks on people he likes to show that he cares, and pulls mean-spirited ones on those he doesn’t like. while he can be impulsive and selfish at times, bart does give a shit about his family. he tries to help them and offer his support in the only way he knows: pranks and checking up on them, making sure they’re okay and that his wisecracks didn’t leave them worse for wear.

personality description :: generally quite kind and sweet to people, esther almost never swears, though she has come very, very close. she is fiercely protective of her family and can be a bit of a mama bear when provoked. occasionally has fits of explosive anger when being pushed too far — but this always falls apart and prompts plenty of apologies to the people involved. anything that is out of her definition of a normal life is revered as something special, and she takes joy in the moments where she can indulge in new things and experiences. marge often seems to be quite tired and overworked - and she is, what with having to take care of her hapless husband, mischievous son, and intellectual daughter all at the same time.

“You’re so unfair grounding me two days before Christmas.”

“You’re lucky to be allowed to hang with the adults, you also can’t nap because Auntie Em is probably not gonna be able to help.”

“You’re so lucky you can drink.” Kat muttered.

Emma joked plainly to Kat, “Be careful what you wish for, kid.”

“So Kat you will be a good host and help your mom.”

“Yes m’am.” She rolled her eyes. “Can I get a few bucks sugamomma for lunch?”

Manny pulled out a five and a ten, “You can get yourself something from The Dot. As far as moms go, you can do worse.” Manny was in a good mood or she was trying to be and masking by immating the wives she sees on the shows she watches, very June Cleaver as she fried the bacon on the griddle for everyone. “ Also you’re very lucky Santa is coming after the stuff you pulled at school the parties, the sneaking out, you can forget about Disney World Senior Trip you keep it up, or university?”

“Ugh! Mom please, you can be so ugh!”  She took off her sunglasses to show she ‘means’ business or wants to be tough. Kat is far from a morning person and Manny experiences this on a daily basis the back and forth. If mom says no ask dad, they both say no ask Joey, if all three are united on no she calls her rich auntie Em and of course it’s always a yes. Emma sees it from Manny’s perspective and her own and suddenly it seems kind of fucked.  “I don’t care, what’s the point? Go to college be trillions in debt, whoo hoo. It’s all a joke. Neither of your guys went to university.”

“Honey, we did, maybe not your aunt no offense.”

“None taken.”

“We saved up, your father and I, we didn’t go right away but you have an amazing opportunity. Your dad and I, Aunt Em, we didn’t go to a four year university, and your lovely aunt Emma didn’t put your college fund together and gift you money for you to throw away your potential and your future.”

She drank some coffee picking at her poptart unphased and sounding like a spoiled brat with little to no opinions or cares. She proceeded to get super cultural maybe she was trying to paint a picture for Emma and be generally rude, “Paul said that college is a trap and a money grab for the rich elite.”

“Who is to say Paul’s sticking around?" Manny questioned shaking her head and adding, "you’re going to college end of story."

“Why are you so unfair mom? Why must you have to rain on my parade all the time?” 

“Guys, I have a headache. Keep it down to a dull roar.” Emma groaned and moaned as she got up and rummaged through the fridge and got a bottle of water out and something to snack on as Manny was prepping things in the kitchen. “Oh and Kat?”

“What, Auntie Em?”

“Did you tell your mom how disrespectful you were to me yesterday when all I asked was where you were planning on going dressed like your mom at that rave circa 2003?”

Manny was shocked and a little bit humiliated, “Emma!”

“Mom! Why am I just finding that out, you held out on me? You were a raver mom? I can get used to Auntie Em, who I suddenly forgive now.” She clinked Emma’s coffee mug with her own. 

“Emma! Why?” Manny widened her eyes and was still recovering from that humbling moment, still humiliated by that revelation and her daughters reaction. “Not another word about my life before you were around. A very long eighteen years ago. You weren’t even a glimmer in my eye. Your father was not even supposed to be there.”

“You peeled off early with Kat’s father, and I walked in on you two making kissyfaces in my twin bed because you left me there if I remember that night correctly.”

“Em, must you? Now go sleep it off. I'm having a very serious conversation with my very impressionable teenaged daughter. I don’t want to remember that. We almost stopped being friends over that. Ugh, no.” And turned to Kat, “Please don’t make the same mistakes I made in fashion.”

Emma was about to retire herself from the conversation at Manny’s request and left them with, “Manny for the record I hope you’ll always remember thongs go inside the jeans.” In a sing-song voice, she bid them goodbye for now, “I’ll be outside.” With her, she took her hot coffee that finally finished percolating in the Keurig.

Re thinking prizes

As my feedback highlighted the “free drinks” element of my idea to be weak, I wanted to rethink what prizes could be given out. I wanted to make something that was more relevant to skin safety, self expression and festivals- which lead me to think about wearables.

These articles helped me see that hats and sunglasses are necessities at festivals, both as a style choice and for their sun protection. They act as both a protector, whilst being a fun way for people to spread awareness of the brand, of their skin confidence, and have fun.

I researched into trending styles and aesthetics for Gen Z, which lead me to find Y2K raver styles. This included razor sunglasses and bucket hats, which are both staples for any gender.

I wanted to take the cheeky humour from these “I <3 hot moms” top into “hotstuff” as it is already a playful brand. This brand is well loved by Gen Z audiences, and is an inside joke between them. By changing the wording to “I <3 my hot stuff”, this again, carries the message of self celebration, and self confidence. It alludes to “hot stuff” skin, which pulls everything back to the main message of this brand.

This is when I decided to start exploring ways of creating my own hats and sunglasses, looking at what was trending, what is relevant and what is fitting.

After reflecting on these hats, I decided to go for the bucket hat as opposed to the cowboy hat. This is more universal of a design and more gender neutral, whilst still being fun and protective. I did, however, also want to create another gift as a prize- looking at creating sunglasses.

I took inspiration from the 'raver glasses' and 'Y2K' aesthetic that is still trending with Gen Z, thinking about making my own. I wanted them to be on brand, but also to be polarised- so they could wear them in and outside of the festival- still being trendy.

I think these two outcomes make the project a lot more considered, and support the protection of skin + celebration. By having these wearables, this creates a real incentive for people to take care of their skin, and is a really fun way for them to express themselves.
