Valentine
description: AoT men and women asking you to on a valentine's date <3
pairing: Levi; Armin; Jean; Erwin; Eren & Mikasa; Historia; Zeke; Reiner x reader
Levi
Levi stood at your apartment door with flowers and concert tickets to your favorite band. He shifted his weight between his heels and toes as he nervously wondered if he should turn back before you realized he had arrived.
Two solid knocks and a light pause later, you opened the door to his stoic demeanor, his lips relaxing into a smile at the sight of you in comfy clothes. He briefly glanced down to his ratty jeans and aged leather jacket. “Hey,” he greeted after clearing his throat, regretting his appearance. He felt he should've dressed up for you.
“Levi, hey!” you returned excitedly, about to pull him in for a hug when you noticed the flowers in his hand. You didn’t comment on them. “What are you doing here? Oh! Come on in!”
You dragged him by his forearm inside, closing the door behind you. “Oh, I was just,” he said quietly, shrugging, “around. And,” Levi lifted the flowers, shifted the weight between his feet. “I saw these and thought of you.”
“Awh, Levi, they’re beautiful!” You eagerly took the flowers from him, brought them to your nose for a long sniff. “Thank you.” You hugged him with one arm before pulling away and rushing to your kitchenette. “Let me just get a vase. Make yourself comfortable as always.”
He followed you to the kitchen, stood awkwardly in the doorway and tried to not blatantly gawk at your figure as you bent over to search the cabinets for the vase.
“I, uh, also saw that Linked Horizon are coming on the fourteenth. Did you s—?”
“Oh my god, yeah!” you exclaimed, hopping up from your position in the cabinet, the ornate glass in your palms. “I saw that!” You filled the glass with water and a spoon of sugar. “But I never bought tickets and now it’s sold out.”
Levi rubbed the papery tickets against each other in his pocket. He watched as you used shears to cut the bottoms off the stems. He pulled his hand out of his jacket pocket.
“Well, if you’re not busy that day…” You carefully dropped each stem in the water, rearranging the flowers and tossing the fallen leaves and petals. He stepped into the room, drawing your attention, and held the two tickets openly. “I’d like to go with you.”
Armin
Working at the library was honestly one of your favorite parts of the day. It was slow, mindless, relaxing, and quiet. The ambiance was kind, and any sour moods evaporated instantly once you entered those archaic arched doors.
Since it was a library, you didn’t really speak with your coworkers beyond necessity, but the blond boy who spent his time at the admin desk always caught your attention—and he was always already looking to you.
The two of you spoke in an unintelligible morse code, an unspoken language of wordless greetings and longing thoughts and lingering stares.
When you both started speaking, it was by bonding over a love of puzzles and logic traps. Armin and you shared stories of writing and interpreting ciphers and tricks, discussed possibilities of work-related games for entertainment.
On the twelfth, you started your shift with the return cart, and a large note in black ink stopped you from starting the task. For Y/N, please review the following, it read, proceeded by four rows each with four columns containing a decimal value and three numbers.
You recognized the decimal shorthand and spotted the books already on the return cart. You picked up the first one and reviewed the set of numbers, eventually determining it as indicators for the desired page number, line, and word.
Once you deciphered the message, you smiled and felt the warm flutter in your belly. You dragged the cart upstairs to the main entrance, stopped outside the administration room to see the familiar fluffy blond hair poking over the computer screen.
Wordlessly you entered and sauntered over to his desk, dropped the sheet of paper with the decoded message and your answer on his desk and left with a wink, leaving him with amazed wide eyes and an open jaw as you left the room.
Will you be my valentine?
—Yes x
Jean
Connie told him the traditional approach was stupid and uninteresting. “It’s y/n! They’re cool and fun and hilarious and awesome! You can’t do something unbelievably lame like you always do,” Connie had rambled in an eccentric voice that now haunted Jean’s thoughts.
“Fucking Connie,” Jean cursed to himself as he fixed his hair in the reflection of the window, trying to maintain his balance as the train rushed over unsteady tracks. He nervously glanced down at his watch, frantically grabbed the handlebar when the tram lurched to a stop.
Jean hopped off and rushed to the bar at which the two of you had decided to meet. He spotted you instantly, in the tight red fuzzy sweater vest and still perfectly fitting baggy jeans. He regretted his overly dressed up appearance with his matching suit and pink tie for somehow still lacking.
“Y/n,” Jean leisurely greeted with an eager grin and sparkling eyes, feeling his body warm up at the quick embrace you gave, “thank you for meeting me here.”
You gestured to the free seat next to you; he sat down. “Oh, Jean, it’s my pleasure,” you said with a smile, “thank you for asking me here.”
The conversation flowed naturally, and Jean felt himself warming up from your attention, the drink, or the room. He slid his jacket off and tugged on his necktie in a failed attempt to cool off.
You noticed the pink tint on his skin and the faint hitch in his breath. You noticed the awkward tugging on his necktie, that he was wearing a necktie at all. You noticed the smile he hid when you touched his arm with your long fingernails, when your thigh brushed against his.
As the night neared its end and he still hadn’t asked, the adrenaline rushed through his veins and he heard Connie’s cynical voice echo in his brain. He felt his stomach drop with each glance towards you, because he was convincing himself he couldn’t ask, couldn’t be worth more than nothing to you.
“I’d really like to see you again,” you hinted while you both stood on the pavement, “soon.” You felt the heat burning into your skull. The shocked expression on his face was tortuous. Maybe it was all in your head. Maybe that was too far.
Maybe it was far enough. “Y/n… would you maybe like to spend Valentine’s day with me?”
Erwin
You had visited the older instructor’s office to ask some questions on the class content, to seek some extra support on upcoming assignments.
Connie had told you Smith was the most helpful of the instructors, but you neglected to factor in the biceps the size of your head, the voice that was smooth like margarine, the eyes that stranded you alone at sea. His help was marginalized by his distracting features, by the concerned expression when he asks if you understand contrasting his brilliant smile and demeanor when you say yes.
And did it really matter if you only understood when it came from him?
His elbow bumped into yours as he leaned to the side, closer to you, to view your page. "Y/n," he started, his leg brushing against yours as he uncrossed his thighs and leaned back in the chair, the skin tingling in his touch's memory, "would it help to meet regularly?"
The question alone caught you by surprise, but paired with his heavy tone, thick with uninterpretable layers, and a curious expression with a piercing blue, watchful gaze. You barely heard him tap his foot over the blood roaring in your ears.
"We can start with an additional meeting on the..." Erwin trailed off, clicking through his online tabs to find the calendar. "The fourteenth." He punctuated his sentence with a click on the date, your eye catching the empty schedule as it appeared on the screen. He turned to you. "We can start then and take it from there."
"O-Okay," you agreed, nodding in sync with the faint throb in your pelvis as your brain reeled with the improbable. "Thank you." Your voice was quiet, and you barely heard yourself speak.
"Absolutely," he breathed out, "more than happy to help." He glanced you up and down, rested his chin between his thumb and fingers to hide his lips, his light blue eyes darkening. "I'll order us something to eat too."
Eren & Mikasa
Mikasa was scribbling your and her names in the corner of her notebook page, actively drawing the small heart around it, when Eren suddenly and loudly slid into the seat next to her, causing her to jump and draw a line through the doodle. She hid it with her palm.
Eren looked at her with a bold desperation in his eyes. “Mikasa, I’ve been thinking about asking y/n out for Valentine’s…” He rubbed the back of his neck and looked to the side sheepishly. “Do you have any ideas?”
Mikasa’s eyes widened. “O-oh,” she stuttered out, taking a half-breath to quell the unsettling feeling in her gut, “I, um.” She glanced to the palm covering the doodle. “I’ve been wondering the exact same thing actually…” She swallowed dryly. “With y/n, too…”
It’s not that she expected him to be upset, but she was surprised when his eyes lit up in a mix of excitement and relief. He perked up, straightened his spine and leaned towards Mikasa. “Let’s ask together! We can do, like, a three-person date.” He shrugged, tried to contain his eagerness. “I’m not against it. But I still have no fucking clue how to ask.”
You entered the room mid-sentence, both of their eyes focusing to you as you crossed the room to a desk. You glanced up from your phone to see both of them already looking at you, both smiling and waving immediately.
“Hey, babes,” you greeted the two of them, affectionately fixing the out-of-place strand of hair near Mikasa’s forehead. You turned to Eren and smiled wider at his eager anticipation. “I was addressing you too,” you clarified, rubbing his shoulder.
Eren leaned into your touch. “Do you have any Valentine’s plans?” Mikasa asked, playing with her pen. You spotted the heart near her hand.
You started to feel warm, flattened your lips to try to suppress the growing grin but eventually bit your bottom lip. “Not currently. Sounds like I might in a minute, though,” you responded with a wink, smiled wider at the light pink stretching across her nose.
Eren’s voice caught your attention, and you suddenly became aware of the arm he snaked around your waist under your backpack, noticed that your arm had slid along his shoulders, “Would you... want to spend it with us?” he asked nervously, before rushing out, “It doesn’t have to be a date, but, well—”
The heat settled in your stomach, and you felt your pulse in each body part. Your smile twitched at the question—at the implication.
“Yes,” you interrupted Eren’s rambling with a confident answer to a question you’ve never considered before, but now will never forget, “I’d love to spend it with you two. As a date.”
Historia
Ymir had the largest scowl on her face when Historia shyly walked over to you, a pink blush on her cheeks and a sweaty hairline. You shifted uncomfortably under Ymir’s gaze when your eyes flicked to the blonde girl standing in front of you, looking at the floor.
“Hey, y/n,” she started quietly, her cute, high-pitched voice singing in your ear, “how’s your day going?” She had a sickeningly sweet smile, one that made your stomach flip and turn with nerves. You felt your inhale cut short as she stared at you with big, rounded blue eyes.
"Good, thanks," you answered with a smile, “how’s yours?” You continued to pack your bag with your notebooks, ignoring the uncomfortable heat of Ymir’s bold glare.
“Better now,” she answered, a light rouge appearing on her cheekbones. The giddy feeling erupted in your gut and bubbled into a doey smile. “Do you have Valentine’s plans yet?”
You shook your head, tugging on the last zipper. “Nope,” you answered casually, unbothered by the notion of being single on the love holiday, “i’ll probably watch a movie at home.”
“Oh, good idea! I love movies!” Historia added, the grin taking up her face. “I..." The tips of her ears tinted pink. "I don’t have plans either." She rocked back and forth on her heels, clutched her notebook a little closer to her chest. "Would you want to watch a movie together?”
You corrected your posture and returned her soft gaze. "Yeah," you answered with an exhale, started to put your backpack on. "I'd really like that."
Zeke
Zeke haphazardly handed you the blunt, the leaflet threatening to slip from your fingertips and fall from the third story window. “Ze, careful,” you told the older man, rolling your eyes despite the smile lingering on your pursed lips, “you’re gonna’ make me drop it.”
He snorted, settling with an open mouthed smile. You watched the faint red appear around his cerulean eyes. “I can’t make you do anything.” He stretched his hand out, silently requesting the roll back.
You crossed your legs, took a long huff, then passed it over. Your fingers brushed against his, the light sensation tickling the skin for moments after. “If you hand it off wrong and I drop it, that’s your fault,” you explained simplistically, shrugging to emphasize the easiness of it all.
The smoke curled around his beard, followed the lines of the glasses resting on top of his head. He flicked the wrap, spent ash falling to the windowsill. “But I didn’t make you drop it,” Zeke retorted, blowing some residual smoke into your face. He chuckled as you closed your eyes and swatted the contaminant away.
“But you played a direct role!” You reached over and stole the blunt from him before he brought it between his lips; the blond man laughed as he let you take it, watched intently as you brought it to your own. “Wouldn’t have happened without you,” you mumbled with a long exhale, the picturesque smoke rolling off your tongue.
Zeke leaned against the wall, let his wrist rest against his knee, and tilted his head. His smile softened the longer he stared at you directing smoke and ash out the window. “I also play a direct role in asking if you want to have dinner with me on the fourteenth, but I can’t make you say yes.”
You looked out the window, suppressing the blushing grin by biting your lip. You affectionately rolled your eyes at his redirection. Not the same thing—like at all. “It’s different when you know I will,” you retorted, taking a hit and holding it until it burned, still avoiding eye contact.
“So… you will?” He eyed you carefully, handed the rest of the blunt to you and dropped his glasses onto his nose. “Say yes, I mean?” Zeke nudged your foot with his.
The roll slipped from your fingers as you focused on hiding your red cheeks and toothy grin behind your palm. “Well, obviously, yeah,” you answered sheepishly. You spotted the wrap on the wooden floor. “And see! You made me drop it!”
Reiner
You patted into the kitchen to find Reiner in front of the stove, steam rising from the pans as he shifted between items. You admired his bare back, the smooth, silky-looking skin intimately caressing tight, bulky muscles interrupted only by the thin linen apron straps.
The sudden noise of the espresso machine caused you to jump and squeal, which brought Reiner's attention to you. He hurried over, gave you a quick kiss to the cheek. "You weren't supposed to wake up yet," he murmured between more kisses, eventually pressing his lips to yours for a lingering lock.
"I can smell everything from the next room," you responded, lightly tapping his firm chest and kissing his lips again. He pulled away to attend to the aromatic contents on the stove. You sat on a bar stool. “Smells delicious, by the way.”
You saw the way his thin lips morphed into a pleased smile. “Should taste so, too,” he hummed his agreement, turned his back towards you for five more minutes. You indulged in the sight, feeling your own pupils dilate to take in more of his broad shoulders and tailored back.
Then he was making a lot of ruckus, rapidly opening drawers to find utensils and rushing to and from the fridge for toppings and ingredients. He was tossing food onto one plate and carefully aligning it on another.
You slipped off the stool to peak over, smiled at his concentrated brows and peaking tongue as he drizzled chocolate onto the dish.
You were right behind him when he turned around with the dish ostentatiously in his hands, his kind blue eyes sparkling with pride and excitement and anticipation.
You audibly gasped and brought your hands to your open smile. “Reiner! Wow!” you said astonished, hearing and feeling your stomach rumble with hunger at the sight of the heart-shaped pancakes with a chocolate lace drizzle, at the bacon and eggs and toast arranged on the side.
He waited for you to read the hidden message, the note written in jam on the toast. You giggled, took the plate from him to put on the counter, and embraced him. “I’d love to be your valentine,” you said with a long kiss.

“I ju-just sent my loc-location, Eren.”
“I got it, Y/N. I just need you to hold on for ten more minutes, okay? Can you do that for me?”
“Y-yes.”
Seattle is famous for rain. You understand that all too well now. After what you’ve counted as twenty-seven minutes - from when you went to take the trash out to the mailpost you’re hiding behind now - you’re all but soaked. Drenched.
Your phone is blowing up with texts, the rain is only getting harder, and the mini black dress and ribbon in your hair do no favors to keep you warm. You slide out of your call with Eren and quickly scan through the messages, buzzing so loud they’re blocking Eren’s voice.
reiner: so, so proud of you always!!! stop being a big famous pop star and go back to being the little twerp who needs my help killing spiders on set :/
levi: I love you too, kid. And on a real listen, we really do love the album.
armin: ann and i are smelling a triple threat on the horizon. love you to the moon and saturn <3
connie: i was accidentally pooping while i listened to dorothea for the first time and i think the combination of those two things at once gave me like a really visceral reaction. im not ok. u are amazing.
mikasa: u are givg me aneurysm. pls don’t forgor to call me the scnd ur okay.
erwin: Call me ASAP.
erwin: Not urgent. Just feeling emotional about my little Canadian reaching hearts all over the world.
king of bitches (maybe: ryomen sukuna): Fluff shit indeed. Blow me a kiss when you beat James for Album of the Year.
danny: where is the album release post? it’s almost been half an hour.
You have bigger problems at the moment. Like the frozen piece of fabric you’re wearing. You should have named the album sweaters or scarves or something. Then at least you’d be warm. And blend in with the paparazzi.
Fuck.
“W-wait, Eren. Y-you ca-n’t b-be the one to get me.” you murmur, shivering through your teeth.
“Do you want to stay with someone else? I know nice people here. My neighbor is in her late forties and has like two middle school aged girls that are really nice. They’d take care of you, I promise you can trust them and-” he rambles.
“N-no. I want to st-stay with you. But pa-papara-zzi. S-send ss-omeone e-else.”
“Paparazzi? Why are-?”
“Er-eren.”
“Would it be that bad if it was me? Like it has to be someone else, Y/N?”
“Y-yes.”
“I have someone in mind. She’s leaving right now, okay?”
Eren’s sound is muffled over the line now, which has you digging your phone into your ear to catch the ends of what he’s saying.
Blast the heater….butt warmer on before she’s in the car….bring it up and I will kick your freeloading….
“Y/N?”
“H-here.”
“Good. I’m sending her. Don't get upset, this is the best I could do, okay? I-I promise she’s actually nice. You can trust her and-and I’d never send someone who would do something bad.”
“O-okay. I t-trust you. J-just get me ou-out of th-this, please.” you whimper, praying to god the rustling behind you is a rabbit and not the group of them finding you.
“I’m trying sweetheart, okay? She’s speeding. She’s on Main and Third, three lights and she’s there.”
That’s when you see it. The flash of the camera. And hear five consecutive clicks right after. You look around the periphery, before you see two of them, two tall guys speed walking closer to where you’re hiding.
So you do the only thing you can. Stand up and run instead.
You scramble up off the pavement, hiking your dress down, and keep running down the block. Climb up the gates, knock over trash cans to block the way, anything to stop them. And when you look back, after who knows how long, you realize they’re gone.
And sit flat on the messy pavement, finally lifting the phone back up. Only to realize Eren’s no longer on the line because your phone is dead. You drop it straight into your lap and dig your hands into your head, covering your ears to stop the pounding sound of the rain from getting any louder.
God. Just breathe. Whoever is coming to get you is on the way. They’ll come get you and then you’ll be out of this mess.
You hear three resounding clicks and a flash of a light to look up at two different paps, two girls this time, getting a straight on picture of you. And all you can do is put your head down in your lap and cry.
They already got the picture. There’s no point in trying to run out of it anymore.
“Y/N.”
“Pl-please. I’m b-begging you. You already got your picture and can ss-spin it into whatever you want. I-I’m still a person, please. Just let me go.” you respond, the tears blinding your sight of vision.
You feel a towel being wrapped around your shoulders and soft hands lifting you up by your arms. And then all of a sudden you’re in a warm car, being sped out of the neighborhood past the groups of paparazzi in between the houses, and not directly across from them having your picture taken.
You’re in a car. You’re okay. You’re leaving. You’re okay.
You lean back and breathe hard, phantom sobs still racking out of your chest, trying to register that you’re almost there. Safe behind closed, triple locked doors.
“D-did you tell Eren?”
“Yes. He’s not far, we’ll be there soon, okay?”
“Okay. T-thank you. I’m Y/N.”
“Lana.”
You turn your head to actually take in the driver this time, to be met with the Lana you feared. Ricky’s ex-girlfriend, Lana. She has short brown hair - entirely different from her long, beachy waves from the Girlfriend incident - a pointed nose and a very clenched jaw.
“Th-there are more blankets on the floor. I pumped the heater pretty hard, but I’ll turn all the fans your way. And anything you could possibly need is being rushed to the house for you, so just don’t worry, okay?”
“I appreciate it. Thank you for coming to get me. I-I”
“Please don’t thank me. I just-”
She takes a harsh intake of breath and turns to give you a look, her mouth upturned.
“He locked you out, didn’t he?” she whispers.
“Yeah.” you respond.
“What did you do?”
“I told him I didn’t like him back.”
She turns her head towards you, a look of confusion on her face.
“It was a PR thing.”
She snorts.
“Your managers must hate you.”
“I’m starting to think they just might.”
“Well. Don’t feel bad. Not for a fucking second. Just because he likes you, doesn’t mean he’s entitled to you reciprocating back. You like who you like. And if I were you, I wouldn’t stop liking a guy like Eren for a skeeze like Ricky either.”
You lean against the glass, hot air blowing in your face, as you take in her expression - so enraged, so exasperated, so furious that it gives you a chill. But when she looks over and gives you a halfhearted smile, you see the pained expression there too.
That’s when you pinpoint it. Lana reminds you of Historia.
“I’m sorry.” you respond.
“For?”
“You knew he locked me out. He must have done it to you too, no?” you whisper, the tension in the air delicate.
She swallows hard and clenches her knuckles on the steering wheel, eyes laser focused on the red light shining on her face. And beyond the original striking features - her sharp jaw and nose - you see the softness too. The dimples, the wrinkles near her eyes, the light brown freckles.
“I wanted to take time off from acting. It-I did a role that was really traumatic and I just needed a break. And he was just about to go on tour and he wanted me to come to support. Like a little cheerleader.”
“So he locked you out?”
“For two days. He-he’s just. A lot of the fame stuff got to him when he was really little. And now he’s got this convoluted sense of self-image and it just- I don’t know. He’s got problems.” she responds.
“I’m sorry. Really, that’s-”
You stop talking, words failing you. And maybe it’s the way your head was frozen ten minutes ago and it’s being melted now, or that the picture they took is going to leak soon, or that there is no good thing to say to something shitty like this. It only took him three months to turn on you, which you’re guessing is generous now. She must have infinite patience for putting up with it for an entire year.
“In a weird way, I’m glad it’s me and not Eren. You- this does something for me. Making sure you’re not out there for two days, it-it helps me.” she whispers, looking over to give you a smile.
“I really appreciate you, Lana. Thank you. And I-I’m not mad at you for the Girlfriend thing. You had every right to do that.”
“Y/N. I have every right to drag Ricky James’ name through the mud. But not yours. And I- shit. Please don’t tell Eren we talked about this. He’s going to kill me.”
“Why?”
“He told me that if I brought it up, he’d kick me out of his house. I kind of stay there because I-I hate living in our townhouse on set because of how toxic it is and he was nice enough to offer. And he made it very clear that I have to pick you and make sure you’re okay, not make you uncomfortable or anything. We’re here to take care of you and-”
“I brought it up. I’ll deal with him if he gives you a hard time. I used to be really good at that type of thing.”
“I know for a fact that you could tell him to twirl in the air like a show pony and he’d do it.”
“I’ll test the theory and let you know.”
She laughs, giving you a smile which you warmly return. Your phone buzzes in your lap, finally revived, and you send a quick message to Mikasa and Jean before shutting it off.
“I-I didn’t know that it was going to go that far. I knew the song and that we were just going to sing it. Let people speculate it was about you. I-I didn’t know they’d have a girl who looked like you OR bring Eren up on stage. And Eren didn’t know anything about the song or the performance at all - they, they set him up.”
“Why would they do that? I mean, they got horrible backlash in the entire thing.”
“They thought people would like it. And they severely underestimated how much people love you. And they did it because, Eren- he. He doesn’t follow rules and-”
“Follow rules?”
“I’m saying too much. He-he’s going to get mad. Ju-just rest, okay? You’re okay now, we’re two minutes from the neighborhood..”
You give her a questioning look, which she returns with a dismissive shake. Stubborn - she’s Historia alright. You lean back in the chair and reach for the music nob, twisting it on. Only to be met with the Teletubbies Theme blasting through the car and a very flustered Lana turning the knob off.
“Fuck.”
“Teletubbies?”
“I-I can explain.”
“Please. I’d love to hear it.”
She drums her fingers on the steering wheel as the silence hangs in the air.
“Okay. Maybe I can’t explain.”
“No need. I appreciate versatile music taste in prospective friends. Especially classics like this.” you respond, cranking the music back on.
“Friends?”
“Don’t be silly. Not exaggerating, but I think you quite literally saved my life a few minutes ago. You’re like the La-La to my Dipsy.”
“Lame. You’re more of a Tinky-Winky. And anytime. We girls stick together, right?” she responds, reaching for your hand and giving it a squeeze. Like Eren.
Did she learn the hand squeezes from Eren? Is he squeezing her hands? They live together so …are they dating?
“We’re here.”
You nod, appreciative of Lana more than maybe any person on god's green Earth, as she pulls into the driveway and helps you out of the car. It’s only after sitting that you’re realizing your legs are so bone dead tired that you’re barely moving on your own.
You move past the hood of the car as Eren walks into the garage, immediately beelining towards you. His hair is long again - it’s always changing every time you see him - and he’s all wound up with tensions sitting in his shoulders. His hands are warm and cupping your face, yanking the cold towel off and replacing it with a warm one.
“Hey. You-you nicked your face, Y/N. And you’re freezing, you-” he whispers, brushing his fingers across the skin near your eye that stings on touch.
Lana holds the door open as he leads you in, arms aggressively moving up and down your shoulders and his face all pinched up in concern.
“You’re good to go? I put your stuff out by the door.” Eren says, gesturing to Lana.
“Is she leaving?” you ask, looking up at Eren.
“Yeah. Don’t worry, it’ll be just us. And I’m sure Mika and Jean will drop everything to fly out for you tomorrow, I can tell them if you need me to and-”
“Well, don’t make her leave. She shouldn’t stay on that stupid set just because of me.” you respond.
Eren looks over and glares at Lana, who is now wide eyed and giving Eren a sheepish smile. Fuck. He asked her not to talk about that.
“Lana.” he says, in a warning tone.
“Eren. Chill out. I didn’t even-”
“You’re so full of yourself, you know that? You- she got drenched and the rain and you were talking about set?”
“It’s not like that! It just came up and-”
“Oh, for sure. You just happened upon it like you were a villager walking in a town square. Ooh Y/N. You just got drenched in the rain and chased by paparazzi, but more importantly, the girls I work with are super bitchy.” he responds, mimicking her voice.
“You-it wasn’t like that! You’re so aggravat-”
“Eren. Leave her alone.” you ask, looking up at him. And you’re sure you must look horrible because he immediately stops when he looks at your face again and signals for her to leave, which she’s receptive to.
“Okay. Lana, text me when you’re there. And check if you were followed on your way out.” Eren says.
Lana stops and holds both of your arms at your biceps, hands soft on your skin.
“Do call me if you need anything, okay? Especially Ricky related. Whatever you do, I’ll back you up, Tinky-Winky. ”
“Thank you, La-La. I’ll take you up on that.” you respond, giving her a warm smile.
“Oh god. No. No, you don’t get to be friends now. Fuck no, Lana. Please stick to the geriatric grandmas you play Scrabble with.”
“You’re just mad they beat you at mahjong last week. Because you’re a prissy loser.”
“And you’re-”
You jab Eren in the side, signaling him to stop, as they both nod and she slides her way out. From the way he’s arguing, the look on his face is so similar to the one he gives Connie when they argue, you know they could go on for years if they got the chance.
“Fuck you, Eren.”
“Eat shit, Lana.”
She flips him off as the door clicks shut behind her, the lack of her presence making you suddenly aware of your breaths. And of Eren, warm Eren rubbing into your shoulders and concerned green eyes staring into yours.
“I like her.” you whisper.
“Me too. Don’t tell her that though, she’s got an ego problem.” he responds.
You laugh, which has him smiling at you, and suddenly you’re sobbing. And on cue, Eren has his arms around you, his touch warm and his voice oh so soft that it kills you. That you haven’t seen him in two months. And haven’t talked to him for longer.
“Eren.”
“Hey, hey. Don’t cry, it-it’ll be okay. I- we’ll fix this, okay? I’ll call Levi and Hange, whoever you want, they’ll all come and-”
You reach up, tangling your arms around his neck as he keeps nervously talking, trying to hold you closer even though it’s not physically possible. And he’s just so-
So familiar that he feels like home.
“You’re breaking my heart here, Y/N. Please stop crying, I-I’ve got you, okay?” he murmurs, straight into your skin as you nod, trying your best to even out the sobs still leaving you. And slowly but surely, the stream slows and your breath evens out enough to get at least a few words out.
“Okay. Okay, okay. I’m okay.”
“Y/N?”
“Hm?”
“As much as I like holding you, you’re freezing. Take a shower first and we can do this all you want, okay?”
You pull back, wiping the tears off your cheeks and giving him a nod. He gives you a small smile, before placing his hands on your shoulders and leading you down towards the bathroom. And you don’t miss all the posters and pictures he has on his walls - one from each season of Attack of Titan, a few of him and Armin, and even one of him and Lana flipping off the camera together.
He pushes you into the bathroom and immediately turns on the shower all the way to the hottest setting, before turning around and putting his hands on his hips.
“Towels, clothes, shampoo. There’s soap in there already and take as long as you want. Sit in here for three days if you have to just- do-do whatever you have to do and-”
You pick up the bottle of shampoo, the lavender scented Pantene, the one that you’ve been using since you were fifteen. And you know, you know that Eren’s atrocious ass uses a three in one hair and conditioner so it’s not his.
“Eren.”
“Hm?”
“Did you just happen to have the brand of shampoo that I use?”
“N-no. Those are Lana’s.”
“Then why are they unopened?” you ask, giving him a smirk.
He glares at you, before rolling his eyes and holding your face. And now he’s leaning so close, so close that your lips are only a few feet away from yours, when he talks.
“You know why you can’t make fun of me for keeping a spare of your shampoos in my house?” he whispers, green eyes burning in yours.
“Why?” you whisper back, stomach lurching.
“Because you’re actually here. I knew you’d come back to me.” he responds, giving your cheek a pinch before walking out.
And when you watch him walk out, giving you one last smile before he shuts the door, you can’t help but roll your eyes. Typical Eren. Funny, irritating, and soft all in one.
He’s the same as you left him.
--
You pad out of the shower, Eren’s hoodie and sweatpants ridiculously huge on you, as you follow the sweet smell into the kitchen. Eren is leaned over the counter, sliding vegetables into two bowls of ramen as you walk in.
“Hey.”
“Hi. Took a while. Thought you died in there.” Eren responds, pressing his hands to your skin to test how warm they were.
“I almost wish I did.” you respond, laughing.
Except Eren doesn’t find it funny and instead he’s dropping the utensils and standing at your side.
“Y/N.”
“I was joking!”
“Nothing about that was funny. Don’t ever joke about that.” he responds, rummaging through the drawers at your side before pulling out a little tube of gel.
Eren taps the top of the counter, which you jump onto, before he takes his place in between your legs. His hands are focused on reading the instructions, forehead all scrunched up in concentration.
“What’s that?”
“It’s like this…scar ointment or whatever. Helps things heal better, I want to use it on that cut on your pretty face.” he responds, twisting it open and squirting some on his finger.
He brings his hands to your face, eyes intently focused on your cheek. You hiss the second his finger makes contact with your skin, the tingling sensation catching you off guard.
“I’m sorry sweetheart, I know it hurts.” he whispers, smothering the cold gel down the side of your eye.
“I-I fell on the pavement. My knees are pretty bad too, Eren.” you whisper, which he nods at.
After he finishes, he’s carefully sliding the ends of your pants off and carefully placing the ointment on each of the jagged marks on your legs. And you eye the bowls of ramen at your side - knowing instantly that the one without mushrooms is yours - and reach for the food. The broth is so warm it soothes the aching feeling in your throat, still seasoned to perfection the way Eren always makes it.
“Eren.”
“Hm?”
“Can I ask you a weird question?”
“Sure.”
“Are you and Lana dating?”
He looks up from your leg and gives you a devilish smirk. And then starts laughing. Like full on, crouched over, tears from his eyes laughing.
“Okay. It wasn’t that funny.” you murmur, rubbing your hands against the warm bowl and frowning.
“Oh god, Y/N. Jesus-”
“It’s a normal question! She lives with you, you trusted her to come get me, and you guys have a picture together in the hallway.”
“Are you jealous?” he asks, standing up and leaning straight into your space.
“Absolutely not.”
“Are too.”
“Am not.”
“You don’t need to get all embarrassed. Watching you kiss Ricky James made me want to break something, preferably his neck.”
You swallow hard at the mention of Ricky again, the thought of him and what happened was so far away because you were with Eren. In his space, in your shared bubble, after so long. And he catches on too fast because he’s already profusely apologizing.
“Hey. I didn’t mean to bring him up, I-I’m not trying to push you into telling me what happened it’s just-”
“No. No, Eren. It’s okay. I know. I-”
You breathe in hard and put the bowl of ramen down and reach for his hands instead. You keep your eyes focused on them - on the little mole on his left hand, the feeling of his knuckles underneath your fingers, and on him squeezing your hands three times before you start talking.
“Ricky and I were faking the relationship for PR. Since London Boy and all that, it was Danny and Sareen’s idea. That-that’s why I stopped talking to you, I-I felt bad. And I was ashamed that I was even doing it, I-I don’t know. The Little Women press and all that, it would just get people to stream and talk. Make me a triple threat. And then today, I- He told me he liked me. And I said I couldn’t do that right now. That I don’t like him back. I went to take out the trash because it was so awkward and then I was going to go home but he- he locked me out. And when I asked to come back in, he repeated the same words to me. That he couldn’t do that right now.”
Eren lifts your hands, still locked with his, and presses a kiss to the top of your knuckles, as you continue. His lips burn your skin, still.
“I was out there and it-it was cold. And then I heard the cars and I saw seven paparazzi trucks, right on the porch. Ricky, his address isn’t leaked. No-no one knew I was there or that he was but they all showed up, right when I was out there and-”
“He called them, didn’t he?” Eren asks, his tone so harsh, so unyielding that it almost doesn’t sound like him.
“Yeah. And I ran, for so long. I- they got a picture. A few, I know they did and I was just so, so scared that I was going to be out there forever, that I was all alone and they were just going to-”
Eren reaches forward, wrapping you in his arms for what feels like the fiftieth time tonight, but you welcome it. Focus on his heart beating under your ear, running your fingers over his fish tattoo on his bicep, and on his soft, steady breaths.
“Eren.”
“Hm.”
“You didn’t say anything. What are you thinking about?”
“What I’m thinking isn’t productive for you to know right now.”
You look up at him, giving him a questioning look.
“Drop it, Y/N.”
“No. Tell me. I’m sure you’re mad and all but-”
“Mad? I’m fucking furious, I’m livid. That he fucking locked you out and left you in the cold. You-you could have been seriously hurt. You are hurt. And not only that, the fucking paparazzi. You-you ran in the cold, you fell, you can’t stop crying and-and- I’m going to kill this asshole when I see him next because it’s his fault you’re feeling like this.”
“Eren.”
“No. Shut up, Y/N. I’m being serious. I-I don’t like seeing you like this and don’t tell me not to. He hurt you. It’s that simple.”
You deflate, knowing Eren too well to know that he won’t drop this. Especially when he’s overly passionate, deep in the feeling right now.
“Okay. But can you just be here for me right now? I need you here and not all….tense and mad. B-Be soft. And warm.”
He stops, the frustration in his forehead dissolving as he takes a breath and smiles at you. Not fully, but it does the job.
“Okay. I can do that. Let’s watch Fruits Basket. And then go to bed.”
“You hate Fruits Basket.”
“But I love you. Enough to watch your weird bestiality adjacent show and pretend to like it.”
You smile and he reaches forward to pinch your cheeks.
“Look at that smile. There she is. There’s my sweet girl.” he whispers, voice all tangled in his throat.
--
You wake up to an empty bed, Eren’s side cold. And you pull his hoodie on before padding downstairs to find Eren’s phone pressed to his ear. He gives you a wave and points to the plate - a mix of eggs, french toast, and fruits - perfectly placed to perfection.
You give him a smile and he walks off, taking the phone with him. You frown as you watch him disappear, jabbing your fork through the cantaloupe.
What is he talking about that’s so important he doesn’t want you to hear?
You jump off of the stool and quietly pad towards the direction he walked, hiding in the hallway. He’s leaning against the wall, staring at the picture right across - one of Levi and Hange kissing your cheeks at the vow renewal - and angle yourself to hear his words.
“Is he okay?”
“I’m glad. You tell me if you need anything else, okay?”
“Okay, Coco. I missed you too, yeah?”
Who the fuck is Coco?
He hangs up and you immediately scramble back to the kitchen, trying your best to stay inconspicuous as he comes back and gives you a smile. It doesn’t reach his eyes, the expression on his face almost tired.
“Hey sleepyhead. You okay?”
“Mhm. Food is really good, Eren.”
He gives you a smile as he sits at your side, eyes focused on you as you eat your food. He places both of your phones in front of you, and you spot yours with nearly a hundred notifications. But when you reach for it, Eren grabs your hand in the air and locks it on his own instead.
“Just-wait. Eat first.” he says, his tone hollow.
You turn your head to the side and take in Eren’s expression, downtrodden and uncharacteristically unexpressive. The complete opposite of Eren yesterday - moony eyes and soft smiles.
“Eren.”
“Y/N. If I ask you to do this for me, can you trust me and listen?”
“No. You-what’s wrong? You’re being weird.” you ask, reaching for his hand.
He looks over, the look indiscernible, as he leans forward and presses a kiss to your cheek.
“You-I took care of most of it, okay? Levi and Hange are coming. Just, don’t panic. You-it’s okay.”
“Eren. You’re scaring me. Just tell me.”
He takes a deep breath, cracking the knuckles in your hand as he nervously talks.
“You-your pictures leaked. The ones of you running last night. And-and people started speculating really fast - wondering why you were running and crying on the night your album released instead of celebrating it. And-and then Ricky, he tweeted a bunch of things.”
You pale. And reach for your phone, which Eren stops again.
“They’re lies. Obviously. You don’t need to read them, not yet. And Lana told me she’s ready to back you up, whatever you want, when you need it. But, that’s not-”
“What, Eren? Just spit it out.” you respond, frantically.
“They- Ricky’s fans are mad at you. They’re sending you death threats.”
“Oh.”
You deflate, staring at the cold mess of breakfast on your plate. Death threats. Hate, you’re no stranger too. Of people commenting on your looks, how bad your singing is, how lame you are. But wishing you were dead? Full on, unbothered and cursing your existence?
“And not just you, but your family too.” he whispers, watching your face fall.
Your family. Your parents, Colt, Falco-
“Excuse me. What did you just say?
Eren doesn’t respond and the tears fall immediately from your eyes, hot and angry as he reaches forward, immediately swiping them away. His expression's pained, he knows this all too well.
“I sent your family a security detail. Don’t worry. Colt was only minorly injured and-”
You stand up and grab Eren’s shirt, bundling the fabric into a fist in your hands, as you glare at him.
“Injured? What the fuck do you mean injured, Eren?”
He sighs, lifting his hands to move yours, and hold them. You’re still clenching hard, so hard you’re sure you’re drawing blood, but he’s doing his best to uncurl your hands as he talks.
“They threw a brick through the window. And the glass, Colt was sitting right there. I was just on the phone with Falco, he said he’s doing better. The security detailing has medical so you don’t have to worry about that again and they’re both okay and-”
“No part of this is okay, Eren! Quit saying it’s okay when it’s not! They almost killed my brothers.”
“Y/N.”
“No. No, this is horrible, Eren. They-they don’t do any of this stuff. Falco’s barely thirteen. And Colt - he’s going to college. He’s not a celebrity, he’s not a singer, he’s just a student. How is he supposed to go out after this? Why- how is it supposed to be normal? And now, they’re going to be like us. They’re going to feel like they’re trapped in this fucking suffocating ass fish bowl and everyone’s watching and laughing at them and they just-”
“Y/N. Stop. It’s not going to-”
“Falco’s too soft for this. He’s just a kid, Eren. I can’t- no. This isn’t fair. Eren, they didn’t even do anything. They’re literally just related to me, they just love me and they’re getting hurt because of it. You- you’re probably getting dragged in the mud too. Everyone who helps me gets subjected to this, loving me comes with this big thing behind me and I can’t even keep people who get it with me. I let you go when you were the only person who understood and I messed it all up and got myself involved with Ricky James of all people and-”
“Y/N. Stop. Please."
You sit flat on Eren’s floor, head in your hands, and cry, teardrops falling straight onto the floor. And Eren’s sitting there with you, with your big mess of jumbled feelings and mistakes, and trying his best to help you with it.
That’s how Levi and Hange find you two, after pocketing the spare key Eren told them about. After he insistently called them and payed for a private jet, going on and on about how Y/N needed them. And here you two are, despite their original conceived notions that you two were fighting, on the floor, in each other’s arms.
“Some things never change, huh?” Hange whispers.
“Yeah. They keep fucking crying every time we see them.” he whispers back.
--
Between Levi and Hange - Jean, Mikasa, and Connie who make it out that night - and Eren and Lana, they fix things. Most things.
Ricky’s narrative about you is clear cut - half-true and half-fake. Your team forced him to date you and defend you for PR purposes, after the Girlfriend incident. There was an agreement that you two would write certain songs, make certain appearances, and support each other.
But then Ricky turns the gate. Says that you’ve deeply, severely hurt him. That you led him on, that you used him to boost your own ego, and that you were dangerously obsessed with fame and not him. That you were all things - heartless, fake, that he doubted if you were even a real person. A glorious pop-star, empty and hollow on the inside.
And people jump on it fast. Citing the fact that you would throw away your friendship with Historia to be famous, that you stopped dating Eren when he stopped being successful, that you can go to tours but not to Mikasa or Jean’s birthday parties.
The worst part? Ricky lied, but the things they pointed out were true. Every mistake you make is on display and that people make it a point to draw attention o it. That you really were in too deep, too deep into pleasing Sareen and Danny, and being a triple threat that you forgot that they were all there too.
Eren, especially. Sweet, sweet Eren who saved you, who held you when you needed him.
You look over at him and Lana, the two of them very aggressively debating how to use their last turn of their daily Wordle, and feel your heart deflate.
You dropped the ball. You’ll never make it up to him.
Lana, in her infinite kindness, has chosen to share her own story, as a corroboration for yours. That Ricky taunted, mocked, and harassed her the entire time they were dating. That you're anything but the things he says. Because she’s had enough and she’ll do it to help out her Tinky-Winky. (Much to Eren’s dismay, he hates that you’re both becoming closer as time goes on.)
And to complement the announcement, Lana asked for one thing. To go out in style. You wrote a song with her and promised her that she was going to be the lead actress in the music video. A girl rage moment, like The Man. Danny and Sareen approve the move, making no comments or concerns about anything else that happened, and ask to be involved when the time comes.
You sit on it for a few days. Till you’re ready. But where you are now - with these people - needs to stay for a little longer. Before you brace everything again.
“Yo.”
You smile, opening up space for Connie on the couch for you.
“Hi Con.”
“Deep in your thoughts there, princess. Thinking about how your album is about to go Multi-Platinum?”
“No. Just the entire thing.” you respond, frowning.
Connie rolls his eyes, reaching forward to squish your cheeks way too hard.
“Ricky, when I catch you, Ricky-” Connie says under his breath,
You snort, reaching forward to push Connie off. You focus back on Eren and Lana, who are now pulling each other's hair and a nice string of insults, as Mikasa and Levi brew their tea, entirely unbothered in the back.
And when the screen in front of you flashes, when your third album goes Multi-Platinum after a week of being released, they’re all climbing on you. Jean and Mikasa are hollering in the back, Connie and Lana are jostling you in the air and pressing kisses to your cheek, and Eren, Levi, and Hange smile at you, the three of them enveloped in their own hug, across the way.
You split your separate ways at the end of the week, when you’re ready. Connie, Jean, and Mikasa return to set, Lana and Eren are gone with the wind, and Levi and Hange disappear again.
When you sit on your plane back home, it sits in. How lonely this entire thing is. How a week full of your friends who love you only happened because of this sickening thing. That it's not a given, that they're presence is only in the bad times and almost never the good.
Your phone buzzes in your lap and you pick up your phone to read the notification.
eren: don’t be a stranger. fish like to swim in schools, not alone.
It’s something that rings in your mind, time and time again. When everyone else wins the war, when you keep performing and letting them take and take, for the sake of the work. For the art, for your dream.
And when you give up acting, singing, and dancing at the end of it all and make zero intentions to ever do any of this again, the question still bothers you.
If fish like to swim in schools, why did Eren push you so far away? Why was he so intent on swimming alone? Where you couldn't follow?
eren: I'm not saying that for you. and I know that this is selfish but...
eren: I need you just as much as you need me.
.
.
.
Fucking liar.

oh my god 7Up/seven m&ms/seven circles of hell or whoever the fuck is a ratty ass rodent who shouldve been exterminated from the tumblr ecosystem the moment they got here. but they probably got 7 horcruxes too that’s why their ass keeps coming back in different forms. their dumbass is a literal NPC character saying the same shit over and over again and you’ll notice everything they say is pure projection. It’s always the same talking point they’re exhausting. ONG, if you say eruri eruri eruri with the lights closed they’ll appear in your bathroom mirror and fucking stab you.
I already got this rodent fucking blocked ages ago and I STILL have to see and hear about the nonsense they get up to everywhere I go HAVE MERCY. they’re up on everybody’s ass I wish they’d scurry back to their sewer grate on twitter where they fucking belong. I kneeewww they would (and I’m sorry to say I was just *waiting* for them to) be masked off on you one day even as they continued to pretend to play “oh noes 🥺” over the deranged anons they sent themselves because this is LITERALLY their pattern of behavior, they just can’t fucking help it. when I was jump scared by that username plastered on those screenshots on my for you page, I wasn’t shocked at all, I was just amused.
Yeah, I was warned about this clown before, when I made another post calling out some eruri fans who'd been harassing me. I mean, those people I called out WERE responsible for harassing me, tagging me in certain posts that they knew I wouldn't agree with just to antagonize me. But I definitely know now that a lot of the anon hate that were seemingly being sent by eruri shippers had to be this asshole in reality. It really is pathetic and disgusting behavior. I thought if I just ignored them before, they would eventually go away and stop interacting with my posts. I didn't want to block them without knowing for sure that the things I was hearing about them were true, but when they finally just lost their shit on me for nothing, and started accusing me of woobifying and degrading Levi, just for talking about how his stoicism isn't indicative of his true depth of feeling, I knew those allegations were true, and that's why I just immediately confronted them with it. Their attempts to deny it were fucking pathetic, too. They're completely obsessed with hating on Erwin and eruri's, to the point it seems their entire identity revolves around that. I wished I'd blocked them months ago. I should have. Oh well, you live and learn.
I'm sure they'll be back with some new account, now that they've been exposed, at least to my small audience. I'm just waiting for them to start sending me hate anons, lol. I know they will, since they clearly have some pathological compulsion that they can't control. I'm sure they'll probably start leaving hate comments and death threats on my stories now, too, lol.
Anyway, I'm glad at least that my experience might help others avoid this douche bag and recognize their pattern of behavior. They made a mistake fucking with me, because I really don't care about calling people out if I have to and exposing their asses.

A snk 1920′s AU:
Sina is wild, crowded, bursting with industry. Home to jazz, fashion - and corruption. Crooked politicians, dirty police, and powerful gangs have turned the city into a cesspit of violence where the powerful rule. At the center of the chaos are the Ackermans - one of the most powerful gangs in the city, Mayor Fritz - who is as corrupt as he is wealthy, Erwin - a police commander determined to weed out the corruption in his own department, and Hanji - a journalist willing to risk everything to expose their city’s darkest secrets.
• A Simple Choice by just_quintessentially_me
[Multi-chapt || completed]
Summary:
The rain had started up again. Fat droplets drummed over her hood, drenching the fabric. Her horse’s reins were wet and cold; though her fingers, numbed from continued exposure to the elements, could hardly feel them.
Following the sound of the explosion, they’d arrived at a clearing. It was a mess of blackened, shattered wood, and the wagon, a skeleton, was little more than a smoking husk. Beyond the wreckage, a titan lay prostrate. Felled, its limp, hulking form was barely visible through the rain.
As soldiers shouted, pointing at the creature, one of the horses still tethered to the ruined wagon, writhed. When the beast screamed a broken, panicked wail, her own horse shifted, flanks twitching with unease.
Hanji barely noticed.
The soldiers' voices, the poor beast’s screams, even the heavy, even thrum of rain - had silenced as she looked to the river.
A body lay at the edge of the dark, white-capped water.

“Are you worried about your wife?”
The question shocked him out of his musings.
Levi looked up, “My what?”
But the pastor was already speaking, “You’re obviously beside yourself with stress – and it’s understandable. Not knowing if your wife has survived-”
Levi cut him off, “My what?”
The pastor hesitated, apparently realizing he’d made some mistake, but misunderstanding precisely what it was. “Your…wife? The woman we traveled with before? She’s ah – forceful. You two uh – have the same, er – strident personality. When we first met, she dangled me off the wall.”

[One-shot]
Summary:
The first time he tells her she’s pretty, Hange is all kinds of filthy - sweaty, dirty, twigs in her hair and mud on her shoes and a great big disgusting ball of everything Levi hates.
She is also crying.
It isn’t like he’s never seen her cry before - they’re nine and crying is just what kids do, especially kids like Hange who like to play with things they probably shouldn’t play with and like to climb trees even though they’re kind of clumsy and so the crying, in it’s self, isn’t all that weird.
What’s weird is that Hange - Hange, with her print-smudged glasses and ratty ponytail and clothes two sizes too big for her - is crying because a boy called her ugly.

Oh, lord, was her only thought as she quickly scrambled for an excuse. “I - Uh - well, sometimes people stare at other people because -” before she could even begin to form a proper sentence, Eren interjected. She wasn’t sure whether to be grateful or dismayed by his actions.
“Is it because you think he’s cute? My friend Ymir stares at my friend Krista that way all the time, she says it’s because she’s so pretty!” Eren babbled happily, oblivious to the way Hange’s grip around the handle of the cart tightened. Only Time Makes It Human
Hi, hello I was so excited to write this story you don't understand! I hope you all like it, I'm open to suggestions for part two or even part three hehe, I just like this concept a lot, lol i even made a Spotify playlist to listen to while writing. And I dont do that very often.
Pairing: Levi/ Reader
Summary: he shouldn't have let Hange drag him to that frat party with Petra as his date, not when she knew you'd be there with someone else.
Tags: college au!, Angst, eventual fluff, slightly nsfw
Warnings: mentions of smoking, cheating, drinking and of you squint hard enough there's some nsfw, literally it's a frat party, you know how college students are
Disclaimer: drink responsibility if you are of drinking age, don't smoke, absolutely don't drive while being drunk, also I don't own the characters, but you already know that.
Tumblr media
The deafening sound of pop music abused Levi's ears to the point his head was pulsing. His drink, a ratty cheep lager that was disturbingly common in such parties, stood in a red plastic cup in his hand, not even halfway drank. It was the watery taste he despised; when he wasn't much of an alcohol drinker, he was adamant about bitter tastes in beverages, a preference he hadn't managed to fight in his whole life time.
He shot an ominous glance at Hange and Petra. Stood right in front him, swaying their hips and smiling at each other as they shipped from their makeshift cocktails, they were more than surprised whatever they had dumped on their cups was consumable.
Petra in particular, beamed everytime she looked his way, auburn locks of her grazing the sides of her kind face as she swayed closer to him. The way his eyes never landed on her until it was necessary guilted him more than he wanted to admit. Mainly because Hange had set them up, and also because he shouldn't have been frying his brain with thoughts of someone else when he was with her.
But sometimes he couldn't help himself.
In an attempt to shut his brain down from making generously misery thoughts, he locked his hand around Petra's waist, sipping ever so slightly off his beer in the meantime. He didn't miss the way she lowered her head to smile, the sheer maroon tint on her cheeks. She fidgeted her fingers around her drink, shooting happy stares to Hange, Erwin and Mike as she went to rest get head on Levis shoulder.
Hange softly smiled back, curling her lips on an upward curve then brushing of three long to stare at the couple with ogling eyes. She focused on the conversation Mike and Erwin were having, as if it was something important enough to get lost into.
"I'm just wondering where Nanaba is, she said I'd find her here." Mike spoke with a puzzled voice, bobbing his head around to scout for the familiar blotch of short blonde hair that acostumed the face of his long term lover.
"Ah, she's with (y/n), silly. They're probably somewhere around if you want to say hi." Hange beamed.
Levi's eyes went wide and his hands numb at the sound of your name; he couldn't believe the plastic cup hadn't slipped off his palm. It had been so long since Hange had mentioned you so casually in a shared conversation, at least before him that is. It was more than natural to assume his friends hadn't cut ties with you, in contrast to his previous belief.
It was unlikely they were working against him on this situation, but his mind couldn't stop from running in possible imageries between them and you. Were they going to that cafe near campus with you when he denied their invitation? Did they spent some nights at your new place, drinking and driving you on watching horror parodies, when you despised it?
He shook his head trying to brush bubbling thoughts of you away from his mind. With a quick look at Petra, he decided to gulp down the warmed up lager, in hopes of finding relief in a stronger refill.
He despised the way beer didn't spritz on his tongue in it's warm state, but he refused to cringe at the aftertaste. Meanwhile, on his left, Petra enthusiastically bobbed her weight between her legs at the sound of another well known song. He didn't bother to comply to her moves, his eyes averted bitterly to the emptiness of his cup, yet he couldn't eagerly decide to step out of the comfort of his position.
Strolling around meant that he could come across you and he wasn't sure whether he wanted that or not.
Yet, Hange was adamant about dragging him, through the crowd to the kitchen counter, seeing his need for a refill as an excuse to get a new drink to mix to her cocktail.
Familiar faces fleet the kitchen, strolling around with numerous cups in their hands, heading to all directions. Levi pinched his nose in annoyance; the stench of sweat and smoke numbed his nostrils making him snicker, disgust masking the look on his face.
Setting his goal as to find a closed bottle of whiskey, his hands managed to work fast to their task. Upon discovering a single bottle that was still intact he twist the cap open, skillfully bringing the rim of his cap underneath the bottle's opening. Copper liquid poured in gushes in the red plastic, filling it to its maximum capacity.
The bigger the drink, the more chances he had to get a little drunk, maybe forget about you in the process.
"Are you thinking about her, shorty?"
Hange's voice rang in his blank head for several seconds fighting to elicit an answer out of him. He fought back, merely for a moment. If he knew Hange she would have kept pressuring him to answer her question on front of every one else for the rest of the night. He was trying to fix his mood with at least some alcohol, so he wouldn't let Hange ruin it.
He hesitated to speak loud enough for his voice to reach her eardrums. Admitting to his pain made it real, and he hated still being sentimental when it came to you. At least Hange would keep her mouth shut if she got her rightful answer.
"Well I do, I suppose." He muttered below his breath, gray eyes never averting to her direction.
Hange curious expression immediately transformed into one of pure mischievous excitement that, he had to admit, was pretty unsettling. He knew that look on his friend's face, he couldn't fight it even if he wanted to so naturally he wished he had bit back on his answer. Nevertheless, what was done was done.
"It sucks doesn't it?" Hange spoke, pointer finger stretching to fox her glasses.
"It makes me feel lonely."
"Well don't make your self suffer, shorty." Hange's eyes softened as she threw a playful punch on his bicept, her drink long forgotten on the counter. "You could try to be friends with her."
"It's not that I want to suffer, it keeps me going sometimes. And no, I don't want to."
With squinted eyes and a disappointed gaze Hange shook her head at him and grabbed her drink from the wooden counter. Her mouth formed in a disapproving smirk causing her cheeks to squint and scrunch in an almost too comical manner. Levi knew he should have paid, absolutely, no mind on stressing over it; whether she was right or wrong she wasn't in a place to judge him for any of his choices, especially on the ones on his romantic life. And even more executionally, on ones she had helped him make by setting him up with Petra.
Not that he had anything against Petra.
He actually enjoyed her company. The cute little remarks she'd make for him, the way she cared for anything he did or the way her eyes would ogle at him as if he was a god. She could keep her space clean and she was kind to everyone in the sweetest manner. On top of that she had a girl next door type of beauty, auburn hair parted messily according to any occasion and round hazel eyes. All in all Hange had been right to point out she looked good on him.
Tonight, Petra was shining in her favorite pastel layers. A soft strawberry lilac turtleneck with flared sleeves as a base, topped with a powder blue strappy dress and finally completed with velvet baby pink Vans. Cute sparkly pins were accessorising her hair and numerous necklaces with moon and star charms shone on her neck. The effort she had put to perfect her aesthetic had indeed paid off; she looked like a fairy under the erratic lights of the party. She had achieved her initial goal to stand out from the occasional soft girls around the crowd, signifying she was Levi's girl.
With Levi's popularity amongst ladies, she had to be effortlessly perfect.
And she was, for as long as she was concerned.
Levi shot his eyes to his friends' direction, catching quickly glimpses of the way Petra danced with Hange. Erwin and Mike were nowhere to be found for now, as he assumed they would be searching for Nanaba.
He cringed at the chaotic arrangement of things; Nanaba had distanced her self from the group because she was your childhood friend so her relationship with Mike naturally came second to not forcing you into the same group as Levi. As if Levi wanted to be forced to be in the same group as you.
Fortunately, you had plenty of friends as to not to stick onto his group.
He was gulping a mouthful of his drink, copper whiskey watering down his dry throat as if he hasn't drunk anything in hours, when his eyes met yours in the crowd. His heart immediately skipped a long beat, chest heavying at the sight of your flushed face.
Maybe, on second thought, you hadn't actually noticed him.
You stood outside of the massive glass window proudly downing the shot in your hand after cheering on it with Eren. There was joy written on your makeup accessoried face; with your eyes squinted and your smile spread to your face asour hips moved according to the music engulfed in Eren's palms. Your hair swayed with each one of your movements, (h/c) locks landed messily on your face and shoulders mirroring Eren's to perfection. Levi couldn't help but notice how Eren's man bun was coming undone on the erratic movements his made.
As you slightly squated, attempting to perk your buttocks in the air for your partner to grab, your baggy jeans tightened their hug on your body in perfection. Levi remembered having seeing you in those baggy cargo jeans from afar on a few occasions, always thinking how good they looked on you, always admiring how you could always lull off your desired aesthetic effortlessly.
It was true that had he not seen you flawnting your effortless dark urban style, he would have thought that Petra had been the only girl who could show anyone how dressing aesthetically could be achieved. But you were something different. They way your breasts sat firmly at the bustier bits of your spaghetti strapped top, adorned by the corset like nature of the torso tube looked magnificent paired to your jeans. Your jet black Dr Marten's boots peaked from the flared finish of your jeans, giving the look a 90s grungy edge along with your all natural -be it for your dark maroon lip color.
Looking around, amongst numerous art majors like you he couldn't find someone who could mimick the way you pulled it off.
There fore, on a way he didn't blame Eren's hands as they traveled down your curves and touched tenderly at your torso. Even if the motion pulled any string in his heart that wasn't numbed by his alcoholic beverage.
He loathed you looked so good, and he loathed the way you danced to the loud tune as if no one was around.
With another big gulp on his whiskey, he felt the world slowing down around him.
As your eyes finally met -this time it wasn't just him imagining things- the tune changed, mocking him for gawking at you while taking your side against him. He noticed you mouth the lyrics to him, your head turned to his direction as his eyes struggled to rip away from your form.
Your moves on Eren became more intimate, more suggestive as you scratched the nape of his neck, bringing your mouth close to his ear to whisper words Levi couldn't have known of. Quickly, Eren pulled away with a pouty smile, displeased that he had to pull away from you. It was in that second that Levi's chest tightened dangerously, as Eren's lips brushed chastely on yours, noses bumping on eachother.
In an attempt to shook the image out of his head he turned on his heels, cup squeezed in hand and stomach growling in anxiety as he marched to his group of friends. Smiling faces welcomed him but he paid no mind in reciprocating the slightest glance. Levi wasn't exactly the type to bounce back immediately after having experienced his heart sinking in such horrid way.
Unsurprisingly for him -seeing that he was used to things only going downhill after a shitty event- Mike appeared out of the blue with Nanaba linked on him through their elbows. It wasn't in fact Nanaba that shattered any remain of his, already ruined, mood, but the person that clung into her palm.
More specifically, you.
"Heyy!!" Hange screamed, hands stretching towards your direction, already pulling you in her embrace once you reached her velocity. "I have missed you so much, where have you been these days!"
"Hange we went out for launch yesterday." You giggled through your squished cheek.
"Noo, that was ages ago I miss you everyday."
You shot a judgemental look at Erwin from Hange's back as she began to pull back from your embrace. The lisps and slips of her tongue were starting to become prominent as she poured words before you in an excessively fast paced manner, leaving you unable to come up with a way to respond to her, let alone understand what she had been saying.
Erwin scratched the back of his head an but his lip in response, shoulders rising up in an unbeknownst manner.
"You shouldn't let her drink that much. You know how she gets." You scolded, looking around the faces of your friends, trying your best not to let your faint voice get overlapped by the loud reggaeton beat.
Once again as Levi's eyes locked gazes with yours your breath hitched inside your chest.
His hand strode out to Petra's waist, pulling her closer almost too automatically for anyone not to notice. The commotion caught your eye, but you never flinched, much to your demise. Petra's hair swayed to the right as her smile widened from the sudden affectionate gesture, making you sick to the stomach from how soft and fragile and enchanting she had managed to look.
"Anyways I just came to say hi, I'll go find Eren now-"
Your words were cut short as your aforementioned significant other showed up bouncing in excitement beside you. Mirroring Levi's actions he pulled you close in a swift movement before ensuring he gave soft smiles to everyone. Hange excitedly greeted him back as Nanaba and Mike caught him up in casual conversation.
Levi watched as the brunette whipped his head whenever he flawnted on his achievements, causing Nanaba to shoot him awkward smiles and Mike to shrug him off in the process. You could see the despair in their faces as Eren egoistically carried on the conversation, but you tried to shrug it off for the moment as you conversed with Erwin.
Your mind wouldn't stop ordering your eyes to attach themselves into the picture perfect couple ahead of you, who paid no mind to your mere existence. In a way you blamed yourself for having caused this. Had you uttered a single hello to them you wouldn't have received such treatment. It served you right for knowingly intruding their space with the intention to make your presence known to Levi.
If you knew if the way Levi's eyes fell onto you everytime you looked away, you wouldn't have had yanked Eren's hand in an attempt to gain his attention.
"Ah sweetheart, I'm sorry, Yeagerbombs with your Yeager boy?" Eren blinked his emerald eyes into yours, pride splattered in his smile for his -cringeworthy to anyone else but himself- pun. You couldn't help but let out a nervous snicker of a laugh as he yanked you close to him again, pleading eyes landing into Levi's stormy gaze.
For you, the world seemed to stop in the moment as you took in his dimly lit face and delicate features. The music fell deaf to your ears as you gawked at him, hands trembling and tongue tied in words that you failed to recognize.
That mellow melancholy in his eyes, the adorning eyebags, the way some short coarse hairs on his face tried to mimick his neatly kept undercut, it all seemed unreal to you.
How long had it been since you had been so close to him? Nowadays it seemed the two of you had moved on to whatever. You had tried so much to avoid eachother that your timing never allowed the two of you to meet, not even for a the slightest, in hopes of forgetting about each others existence.
What downed you, though, from your precious pink cherry blossom rainfall bubble was that Petra was wrapped lovingly around him, her aesthetically pleasing image fitting conveniently with your little fairytale background, throwing you out of it.
By faintly excusing yourself from the group you let yourself lose on Eren's grip as he slipped you away from the crowd and towards the kitchen.
__
Levi didn't want to have to take a trip to the bathroom of a sorority house. In thought it seemed disgusting and unsanitary, but he had so much to drink that his body had been begging and screaming to him for some sort of relief.
He assumed the upstairs bathroom would be clean, supposing there weren't any horny young adults crushing their reproductive organs against eachother as there would normally be at any party of this nature.
With a steady knock that elicited no answer or even a simple grunt from the other side of the door he knew he was good to go. With a movement of his wrist the handle twisted and he slowly let himself in, eager to get through the process as fast as possible.
A few moments later and the fly of his distressed jeans was being zipped up again, tucked neatly under his black crewneck's bottom. He scrunched his sleeves up above his elbows and run his hand under the sink, waiting for the water to warm up.
His face looked tainted in the mirror; puffy eyebags and a deadpan expression while his lips stayed chapped. In an attempt to look presentable he run his now excessively washed hands through his front bangs tagging slightly to form a little volume at the roots.
He hadn't expected to swoon so easily at the sight of you being playfully entangled with Eren. He hadn't expected his heart to sink at the sight of you being explicitly affectionate with anyone before him and he wondered if it was simply due to the fact that he hadn't been accostumed to it. He certainly hadn't expected of Eren to step in and swoop you away before his very eyes; the pain of seeing you next to a friend of his seemed even more devastating for a few seconds.
Nevertheless, the little shit had always had an eye on you, even if he liked to consider himself as a protegee if his.
Levi wondered if you had felt that loathing feeling as well. Petra hadn't been that private about their relationship, with her constant posts on Instagram, her continuous snaps of him on a daily basis. Whereas he hadn't seen you post many things in the course of eight months.
He had brushed off the idea of scrolling through your socials a numerous times before finally agreeing on linking with Petra. Secretly he'd search for your shared photos, hoping they'd appear out of nowhere on your profile. Secretly he'd stare at his archived posts, contemplating on whether he should keep photos of a better time protected or whether he should delete them.
Now with his back against the sink to prevent himself from catching his reflection judging him, he unlocked his phone and tapped the familiar fuchsia icon. As expected, Eren's profile icon flashed in a pink and orange ombre circle before all others, signaling he had posted a story. Not supressing his pulled heartstrings who were set to call the shots tonight, Levi tapped on the icon with such force that a loud tapping sound filled his ears.
The video loaded painfully slow, his data connection giving in to the thick bathroom walls. Eren's face flashed on his screen, sheepish smile adorning his features."There's no hope for us!" He spoked in blurred pronounciation. "Even the anti smoker is smoking!" In a quick sequence the camera angle shifted on you, apathetically taking a drag out of a freshly rolled cigarette while cussing him out in a stern tone.
Silently he scrunched his nose and clicked his tongue in annoyance. Surely you still hadn't learnt from past mistakes. In seldom occasions you'd smoke while mixing your drinks, nothing unusual for people at your age; although Levi knew better than to do it consciously, you sometimes did. He had been strick and unforgiving on you, snapping out on you the following day for not taking good care of yourself. Clearly his short temper had only pushed you to riot now that you were away from him.
When the door shot open, causing him to jump and nearly let his phone slip away from his grip, he couldn't bring himself to realise for how long he'd been sitting in the bathroom, replaying Eren's story.
His eyes quickly recognised you as you shot your arms to pull your hair away from your face. He had seen you from every possible angle, a feeling that once upon a time had made him feel sick and trapped, pushing him to make stressed decisions. Every little detail of yours was curved in the back of his brain, awaiting for moments like this to unleash. It was easy like that to recognize you for miles ago.
As much as he'd like to, he didn't make a move towards you, afraid that maybe if you saw him out of all people in this state you'd jump in fear.
Nonetheless he couldn't help the silent inquiry concerning your condition not slip off his mouth. "You alright there?"
"I'm fine." You gulped, supressing the urge to spill your stomach's insides before the person behind you. "It's just- my ex is here and I- I guess I got stressed and I smoked and I drunk too much and ugh-" you cringed at the way you overshared your personal matters with a stranger, although you momentarily found comfort in the action. No one could judge you if they didn't know you, right?
"You don't say!"
Of course luck wouldn't be on your side. Ever since you laid your eyes on him a few hours ago you knew it in your heart this night would fall in crumbles, but did it really have to be this way?
You jumped, startled at the sight of Levi's familiar face, ignoring the way your heart fell as hard as a rock in your stomach, ignoring the vertigo like feeling to numb the poor organ. Puke hitched in your throat and you ripped your eyes away from his form in a panicked state. Your stomach emptied in the porcelain toilet, leaving atrocious sounds as it burned and scratched on your throat. You feel your whole body go weak with every shot of your stomach. Your hands couldn't keep their grasp on your hair; they quickly fell near your legs.
Levi crouched to your side in a heartbeat, his quick instincts getting the best of him as he grabbed your hair tenderly in order to keep it away from your face.
"Fuck, just how much did you even drink?" He whispered, hand reluctantly reaching to soothe down your back.
"You should know." You barked. "You were staring. How dare you?"
He had grown accustomised to quite make out your mutters by assuming what you were feeling in the moment. Athough, as your excessive vomiting came to an alt, you yanked your hair angrily out of his hands, refusing to associate yourself with him anymore.
As you meticulously washed your hands and mouth you noticed his stretched hand shielded the way to the door, blocking you from exiting. Your dizzy state didn't allow you to be feisty as you fixated your interest in swooning over the way his arms looked with his sleeves rolled up. You took a mental note to scold yourself for that very fact once you were sober enough.
"I have to go to my friends, thanks for helping me."
"You're not going anywhere." You noticed his breath hitched as he spoke. Was he equally as drunk? Wasn't he supposed to handle his alcohol like he had always said? Just how much had he had to drink? "You're not going anywhere until you tell me why you drunk so much."
Your silent thoughts geared up inside your brain, ready to skyrocket out of your mouth the moment you opened it to speak. "It's because you're here and you're with her and seeing the two of you in action is only making it real!"
Levi erratically blinked at your word vomiting. He hadn't expected you to just spill out those words without a notice it a warning, hell, even a little warm up would be nice to help him form a preserved reaction without becoming a drunk stuttering mess.
Without warning your hands wrapped around him, chests pressed against each other in the firmest way possible, sending shivers down his newly sweating spine. Normally, he'd say he hated the way you nuzzled against the crook of his neck, wiggling your nose through his crewneck sweater to coo into his warmth. Normally, he'd pinch himself and wake up and you would disappear, never to been seen laying beside him in such manner again.
Normally his blood wouldn't pump profoundly in his veins in excitement and lust as your touch and your smell.
As the sweet aroma of vanilla and pergamont englulfed his nostrils his arms loosened around him before jumping to the sides of your face, yanking it away from his neck. His next move was crucial; thumbs tenderly stroked on your cheeks as his stormy eyes looked silently into yours. He could only listen to his heartbeat as he crushed his mouth against yours in a feverous manner.
His body pushed against yours in need to pull you into the kiss as you responded with equal effort to your passion. Fortunately for him you had spent minutes trying meticulous wash out any smell or taste away from your mouth with some oral hygiene products you had happened to come across in the cupboards. The fact that he was drunk didn't mean he was inconsiderate of his need for everything to be clean.
__
All in all, be wasn't sure how the two of you ended up in the backseat of his car, topless with your tongues genuinely battling for dominance.
He must have been in a haze as he pushed past and out of the crowd, erratically trying to remember the general direction in which his car was parked.
As his hands gripped everywhere he could find his eyes didn't dare to shoot open. Existing in this moment, dry humping to your hips from underneath you. Tiny bumps adorned your skin every time he touched you. The freezing air of December had finally brushed its effect on both of you, soft shivers shook your whole form and he couldn't help but notice.
He couldn't think straight, despite wanting to though.
Your lips launched in the soft spot on his neck in an effortless manner. To him it was obvious you hadn't forgotten his own anatomy; all the places that you touched teased him perfectly to submission making him sink into the black industrial seat.
Your hands passionately grabbed the back of his hair, elbows colliding with the skin just under his collarbone.
"I've missed this, I've longed for this."
Your words, whether they were intentional or not, slit through his chest and set fire to the wound, causing another wave of stressful passion to spread from his stomach to his whole body. Chaste kisses were places all over his face, underneath his bangs, on his eyes, even the tenders corners of his jaw.
Your noses crashed, your breaths mingling in the air as your lips found his again.
You moved your lips in perfect synch, as if they were two pieces of a puzzle that were fabricated to fit perfectly on eachother. It hurt you that your bodies were working against your sober wills. You made another note to punish yourself for that as well once you were in your right mind.
His hands wrapped tighter around your back, crashing you impossibly closer next to him. Your chest fought to rise and fall as squirms escaped you, engulfed into his mouth.
"We shouldn't do this here, I'm not up to voyeuring anyone." He remarked, but fell silent as you placed another brushing kiss on his lips before pulling back to slightly nod in agreement.
Before you knew it you were wrapped in his jacket, your top long forgotten in an unseen corner of his car. His own charcoal black crewneck shielded his body from your sight as he hit the pedals of his car almost too closely to the allowed speed limit.
Long forgotten were his friends and date to the first party, long forgotten were any attempts to find excuses for whatever had ignited what was happening.
The trip to his apartment was quicker than what you had expected; maybe it was for the alcohol in your system that left you in a constant vertigo, but your head wasn't getting any better. The warm golden Christmas city lights adorned every single aspect of the streets and captivated your eyes spreading their heat into your whole form. With Christmas around the corner the current situation felt even more alluring to indulge into.
Christmas always meant Levi, in a way.
You swore you only blinked for a second once you entered the apartment building front door but when you opened your eyes you were before his door.
As always, it read 25B.
In a flash you were underneath him in his bed, hair sprawled everywhere around you as his lips angrily assaulted your collarbones. You didn't trust your drunk antics to tell you if the night was still young, but you assumed it could still labor a few more hours of the greediness between two long lost lovers.
"I" he started acting kissed on your lips as his hands came to mingle with the button of your jeans. "Want you to know." Another kiss was placed on your lips. "That" another "I-"
This time you cut him off with your swollen lips on his, sucking all air out of his lungs. "Just kiss me and we'll talk about this afterwards."
__
Your eyes throbbed as light entered their cavities, reflecting on your irises despite your best wishes. You had only just shot out a hand to shield them from the warm rays of sun when panic stabbed through your chest like a murderous intruder.
They blueyish grey tink to the walls and the futuristic design of the drawers and nightstands were all too familiar to you. They stood there, mocking you on all their dark chocolaty color for being unable to come up with an immediate answer to your whereabouts.
Your head was being occasionally jolted in throbbing hot pain as you decided to look around you in the matress, in hopes of recognising the person to whom the newly sounding grunts belonged to.
To your utter shock and disbelief, Levi shot up from his position on the bed. You watched as his eyes widened at the sight of you, grey orbs slightly shrinking in shock and realisation.
"What did you-" he began but soon his hand shot up to his own throbbing head. "Shit just how much did we have to drink?"
"Okay I have a better question," you added to your shared misery "are you as naked as I am?"
It was on rare occasions that you had seen such irrational panic mask Levi's face, yet this time must have been the most striking one amongst the ones you could recall. His skin had lost at least two shades of color, his lips parted slightly. His forehead was cringled as his eyebrows were skyrocketing away from his eyes.
Although when he opened his mouth in an attempt to confirm the obvious, he was quickly cut off by the sound of his doorbell being rung, along with three stern knocks on his door. Even his phone started ringing from beside him, adding pressure to his momentarily frozen state. He picked the divice in his hands, fingers shakingly making their way to the acceptance button.
"Hey Petra!"
"Hey love!" You heard the cheerful voice fill the air through his speaker. Petra had a really loud voice, you noticed, it was either that or that your head was about to explode from the hangover. "I'm outside, please open up, you left without even saying goodbye and wouldn't pick up your phone. I'm so worried."
"Tch, give me a second I'll get changes and we can have breakfast at that cafe you like." Levi grunted, his thumb reaching to rub soothing circles on the prominent vein in his forehead.
"Can I come inside?"
Shit.
"Yeah yeah." He spoke as he hit the closing button, his phone being slammed against the bed. His head turned to you, only to reveal a section of his throat that was bruised in lovemarks you had left on him. "Hide, stay silent, I don't know which one, just do it."
After his harsh order, his eyes never had a chance to reach yours as he got up from the bed to sprint to his dresser, hurriedly searching for the only washed black turtleneck he owned. He hadn't even had a chance to look himself in the mirror, but knowing you, you couldn't have held back from munching on the skin in his throat.
Upon his quick discovery, he threw on a pair of gray of sweats that he recover from the hanger behind his door.
You didn't dare speak, hell you didn't even dare move, the fear of being discovered in such pretentious position -as the third person- in a house you once had lived in overtook your natural senses and your irrational thinking. Your heart didn't cease to sink as moments later you heard the door click open, then immediately close.
The familiar buzzing sound of silence filled your ears a few moments later. This time realisation kicked in immediately in hopes of drowning your mind in excessive amounts of overthinking. That's how it was then?
Your head plopped down the pillows, sinking deeper and deeper with each passing second. Your heart skipped essential beats and your breathing hitched in your throat. Only one question stood on top of others.
What had you done?

Dearest Erwin,
I don't know what the weather is like where you're staying at the moment, but here it's cold. I don't know if it's just because you're gone, or because it is actually cold. Either way I'm only able to get sleep in front of the fire to try and make up for the lack of your warmth.
Even then, my sleep is still restless. It makes me fear what would become of me if you never came back.
I'm not going to lie and say to you I want this to be over quickly, because I'd rather you not go away at all. The fact I can't be there to say goodbye in person just makes it harder. I want you to come home, and I want you to stay. Selfishly I want to keep you here with me, away from the titans and everything that being a commander involves.
You're not getting younger, Hange is getting more capable, and there's promising recruits in the 104th, from what you've told me. Levi won't be the only one willing to break your legs if you want to go away again. But please just come back.
I know your dreams and goals. I know what you're working towards, I know all that and I know that there isn't much I can say to stop you from leaving. So I won't try. And I know that as much as I want you to, you can't promise me you'll come back either. So I wont ask.
But before you make any rash decisions, if you think you have nothing left to lose, remember me. You might be willing to bet everything every time you face titans but I am not. You are my everything. Shiganshina doesn't need you as much as I do.
So try and come back. Please. I love you, very much, but at the end of the day I know that you'll do what you have to, no matter what I feel.
One way or another, I'll see you when you come home.
Yours, Mnemosyne
My dearest Mnemosyne,
How I wish I were there with you. To hold you close, to keep you warm, and to brush those tears from your eyes. Do not try to deny it my love. Were those not tear stains on the corners of your letter? Very clever writing over them, but you forget how well I know you, dearest.
My sleep has been less than restful as well. The cold, and the ratty tents notwithstanding, without your warmth pressed to my side, I am not sure if I will sleep well ever again if I am without you.
You know how much work it took to get to where I am. The things I had to do, the things I continue to have to do to ensure my command is not threatened. But you, my dearest love, you have made me dare think, on more than one occasion, of the life we could lead, just me and you, in a cabin on the outskirts of the walls. By the lake perhaps, surrounded by those flowers you like so much. But I dare not dwell on it for too long.
As you so affectionately remind me, I am not getting any younger. Perhaps it is the age, but my desire to settle down, to solve the mysteries that were placed in front of us, and retire happily to you - it pulls me towards my mission. The quicker we answer these questions, the earlier I am relieved of duty, and can enjoy the calm time in front of the fire you so covet.
I too, cannot promise you a future with me, indeed, I am unsure of what my own future holds on a given day, but I can promise you, that every time my eyes close, I see you. I see you from the moment I reluctantly fall asleep to the moment Levi barges into my tent to wake me. I am yours as long as you will have me, and each moment is one I cherish. If anything were to happen to me, know that you will be my last thought, today, tomorrow, forevermore. Your love means everything to me as well my dear. But it is because of your love that I must fight on. To protect us. To protect you.
I will come back. I will spend my last strengths reaching out towards your warm embrace, and destroy everything that lies in the way. Sleep well my love, the nights may be long and cold, but each one brings me closer to you.
Warmly yours,
Erwin

Some (established relationship) Rivetra birthday crack/fluff, ft. awkward!Levi, because I can.
Levi sucks at giving gifts.
Maybe it's just the fact that he's awkward as fuck, but the notion of having to find something nice for another person fills him with equal parts dread and exhaustion. Honestly, how would he know what they'd want, anyway? He'd much rather just shove a couple of coins in their direction and call it a day.
The whole concept of gifts had been a culture shock to him, after leaving the Underground—not that he didn't understand what it meant to get someone something, but just the whole song and dance about it, of how every even remotely special occasion called for a gift of some sort. The first time he'd heard of it, a squadmate was asking him to contribute something to Erwin's promotion hamper, and he'd almost snorted, assuming it was a joke; the fucker had just been promoted to Commander of the Survey Corps, honestly, wasn't that gift enough?
Fortunately, his squad knows better than to ask him to contribute things; they just ask for money whenever they're doing a group gift, which he's happy enough to part with. And with matters outside the squad, well...he still doesn't really get why people thing he's so fucking terrifying, but in this, at least, he's happy to be excluded.
Well, until now. Unlike him, Petra actually does enjoy gifts; she's one of those crazy people who likes giving them, who handwrites cards and wraps presents in nice paper and glittery ribbons (another thing he doesn't get. He's supposed to spend time and money on wrapping paper that's just going to get torn into shreds?) and somehow, considering how they're dating and all, he doubts she'd be content with his usual fare of a few coins and a curt happy birthday over breakfast.
He briefly considers staging a training accident; surely, she wouldn't expect a gift from him if he were in the med bay recovering from a debilitating but non-life-threatening injury?
"Aha," Hanji says, briefly pausing in her monologue about Titan reproduction (he hadn't been listening in the slightest, but that's never been a deterrent) to point her spoon dangerously close to his face. "I recognise that look. You're thinking again, aren't you."
"None of your business." He pokes morosely at his dinner, and misses. The tines of his fork strike the porcelain with a rather unpleasant metallic screech that makes them both wince.
"It's not a good look on you, you know," she comments, shovelling a fragment of potato into her mouth as Levi watches with barely veiled disgust. "Thinking. You're much better off playing the role of the macho action hero, all brawn and no brain—"
"I will stab you with this butter knife," he threatens, with a kind of despondent savagery. The woman just leans on her elbow and waits, perfectly unruffled.
He chews, swallows, and after a long pause, finally admits, "Petra's birthday is coming up."
"And you're thinking about what to get her?" Hanji smirks. "Sweet."
"I'm thinking about why surface-dwellers have so much time and energy to bother with stupid things like gifts," he grumbles, spearing a chunk of broccoli with more aggression than strictly necessary.
"Well, they're a welcome distraction from the terrors of daily life, don't you think?" She pushes her goggles up her nose with a kind of practiced impatience, and continues, "I think...Petra probably would want something heartfelt. You know, something you wouldn't give to anyone else."
"I wouldn't give anyone anything, from the start."
"You know what I mean." Hanji rolls her eyes. "The gift's gotta make her feel special. Maybe something with a sort of significance, or meaning, or...oh! Something handmade? How good are you with handicrafts?" She eyes him, looking rather less hopeful than he'd like. It rankles him.
"I'm pretty good at carving," he snaps. Hanji brightens.
"Ooh. Wood?"
"Flesh." He shovels the rest of the stew into his mouth, ignoring her snort of indignation, and stands up. "Don't choke on your food, Four-Eyes."
==
In his time in the Underground, he'd learnt precisely two things about food: one, to defend it with your life, and two, if you chuck a bunch of ingredients into a pot and apply heat, you can call it a casserole, which is a fancy-sounding name for something that barely counts as a dish at all.
Furlan, being unable to cook for his life, had been put on permanent ingredient-gathering duty (read: theft) instead. Isabel, on the other hand, had an irritating tendency to get distracted, disappear off to fuck-knows-where with the food still on the stove, and promptly forget all about it. By the process of elimination, Levi had took over most of the cooking.
Being easy, flexible, and requiring very little attention, casserole had quickly become his signature dish. And yeah, he wouldn't call himself good by any means, but as far as he's concerned, no-one'd ever gotten food poisoning from a dish he'd made, which he counts a win.
Still, he figures that not poisoning anyone is a pretty low bar to set for a birthday dinner for his girlfriend.
For the eleventh time since entering the store, Levi wonders if he should just forget it. Get her some bauble or trinket, that glittery shit that girls always like. But against his will, Hanji's irritating voice drones in his head: something heartfelt. Something you wouldn't give to anyone else.
Levi scowls darkly at a shelf of cheese. "What the fuck's the difference between cheddar and mozzarella, anyway?" he mutters to himself, before giving up and shoving both into his basket.
He continues wandering through the store, grabbing whatever he thinks will go well together. He barely glances at the price tags as he goes, too distracted by his thoughts—does she like chickpeas? Or was it lentils? Are those different?
(Of course, he pays for his inattention dearly, when the cashier coolly informs him of his total and he almost chokes. Well, he really should've known; the storekeeper in the Underground always did seem to loathe them with an aggressive vengeance.)
==
Carrots—potatoes—beef. Levi measures out the ingredients carefully and scoops them into the pot, eyeing the stew bubbling cheerfully over on the stove, and allows himself a brief moment of smugness.
He's outdone himself, even if he says so himself. Everything's been planned, down to the last detail. In the morning, he'd presented Petra with a new fountain pen, a perfect decoy gift, especially since she'd mentioned earlier how she'd been needing one. He hadn't missed the flash of disappointment in her eyes—shitty Four-Eyes had been right for once, he supposes—but she'd schooled her expression into one of appropriate delight quickly enough, and exclaimed over it as necessary, and he'd known she'd fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.
He's even timed this whole dinner thing perfectly, getting the guys to keep her back for a bit after training (which they'd agreed to, albeit with some snickering) so he could prep for the meal. She'd be in the showers now, he guesses; and now, with the brick oven all heated up and the dish nicely in place, he probably has about twenty, thirty minutes before the next step of the plan, when he'll go to retrieve her from her room under some pretense or another, lead her to the dining hall, and—
"Levi? What's going on?" Petra rubs her eyes, strolling into the room and and sniffing the air curiously. "Are you—are you cooking?"
What the fuck.
"Petra." He tries his best to block the stove, desperately searching for a way out. "You're back early. This is, uh...an experiment. For Hanji. It could blow up any second, so off you go now."
Petra does not oblige. Her eyes narrow, and she tries to peek around him. "Your experiment is stew?"
"It's not stew, it's...Titan bait," he improvises wildly, making her brows lift in disbelief. "Seriously, Petra. Go away." His eyes dart to the wall clock; he needs about fifteen more minutes, at least. "Didn't Eld...didn't the guys ask you to stay for a bit?"
She shrugs, still craning her neck to try to see the contents of the kitchen counter. There's a hint of a grin on her face now. "Auruo was bragging again about something-or-the-other, and bit his tongue, and I slipped away in the commotion. Levi, is that cake?"
"I told you, it's Titan bait. Now get out, that's an order." He tries to keep his tone cold and steely, a feat which is proving much more challenging than usual with his very pretty, very annoying girlfriend standing on tiptoe, trying her best to peek over his shoulder.
Judging by her expression of keen amusement, he fails quite spectacularly.
"Levi," his irrepressible subordinate goes, her eyes gleaming, "your cake—sorry, Titan bait—says 'Happy Birthday, Petra'."
With a frustrated exhale, he gives up trying to block her, and slumps back to the kitchen counter. Petra waits, tapping her foot, still looking thoroughly amused. Her hair is still damp from the showers, he notices. But despite the fact that she has a towel around her neck and is dressed in a ratty old t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants—her standard evening attire—his breath catches in his throat. She's beautiful.
"Okay, fine," he grumbles, tearing his gaze away. "I'm cooking. It's for you. Happy birthday. You're still a brat."
She laughs, and the sound makes his lips pull into a reluctant smile, too. "I never took you for the domestic type, captain," she teases, leaning into him and winding her arms around his back. "Stew? But didn't you already give me a gift, though?"
"Casserole," he corrects. "It sounds fancier. And that was a decoy—this was supposed to be a surprise. I mean, I thought...since it's the first time you're having a birthday, well. With us, like. Together." He clears his throat, and silently wills himself not to do anything stupid and embarrassing, like—Walls forbid—blush. "Remind me to have a talk with Auruo, will you."
"Well, count me surprised," she says, leaning in and grinning up at him.
He rolls his eyes.
"Anyway. Since you're here so early," he goes, gazing at her with a look of utmost seriousness, "here. You can help to chop the onions."
Petra blinks, indignant. "Seriously?"
"Nah, I'm kidding. That's for ruining my surprise, you brat."

"...Levi?"
"Yeah?"
"Thanks."
"Happy birthday, Petra."

oh oh! i was wondering where Levi would be so good at braiding Hange's so normally they ask the same question and Levi goes silent because he remembers the times he used to style Isabel's hair and Hange realises and omg im sad af now :((((
Oh god this made me sad... Here you go lovely:
three strands for good luck
Since the first time Hanji had introduced themselves, they make it a habit to talk his ear off whenever they see him, much to Levi's dismay. Sometimes it's about something menial like the weather, sometimes it's about their observations on the Abnormal Titans. Sometimes it's little anecdotes about the others- about Erwin and his habit of talking in his sleep, about Mike retching the first time he had met them and him apologising profusely after. And Levi wonders why, because he has never given them any indication that he’s a willing participant in any of this? He gives them nothing beyond non-committal grunts and occasional nods. And yet, Hanji is unbothered when he sighs, or clicks his tongue, or asks them if they ever shut up. They respond, in kind, with more ridiculous laughter.
But they’re quiet the day Isabel and Farlan die. Levi barely makes it back to his room. He's still clutching their bloodied patches. His hands are shaking, and he can't remember the last time he's felt this much pain. Or this much guilt. They had been his responsibility. They would have followed him to the ends of the earth. And they did. He doesn't even hear the knock on his door. It creaks open and he's looking up now. Hanji is toeing into his room, only really setting their feet on the ground when they realise that Levi's boots had already left stains on the wood.
"Hey..." they say, so soft it barely travels. "I'm sorry for what happened to Isabel and Farlan..." Hanji is kneeling now. Levi's eyes scan theirs and something in him shifts. Whatever that had been coursing in his veins on overdrive during the fight, during the moments when he had found Isabel's mangled body, recedes. He sees how tired Hanji is, spent from battle, their legs barely holding them upright. He sees the bandage on Hanji’s arm that’s seeping blood, and he sees the goggles that are perched on their head, with the lenses smashed through. They look so, so tired.
“If you want to talk to someone... You know... About them... I'm on the second floor... The room right at the end... I knew them too... Not as well as you did of course... But-"
"Thank you," Levi replies. And he had meant it. Hanji nods and turns to look at him one last time before m closing the door.
Hanji doesn't say anything to him for the next few days. But they check on him to make sure his head is above water. Because Hanji knows their occupation is unforgiving. There's little to no time to grieve before there's someone else to mourn, someone else to bury, someone else to miss. Someone else to talk about in a way that falls somewhere between purpose and martyrdom.
But no one really speaks of Isabel and Farlan. Hanji notices. And already, so much is expected of Levi. He comes to them a week later, during a lull. Time for broken bones to heal and scars to form. He comes to them at night and they hear the short rasps on their door.
"Hey!” Hanji says, eyes widening in surprise, they can’t contain the smile that spreads across their face, "come in!" They clear the pile of unfolded laundry off their chair, tossing them into the cupboard, frantically making space for their guest. Hanji gestures for him to sit, and they take a seat on the edge of their bed.
“How’s your arm?” He asks, and Hanji rolls up their sleeve to show him the scab, raw at the sides from picking. “Healing well!” Hanji runs a finger over it to prove a point. Levi pulls a face, “would’ve healed better if you didn’t pick at it...” Hanji chuckles. It can’t be helped.
Levi gives them a once over. Granted it’s late, and it’s almost time for bed, but Hanji is disheveled as always. Their hair tie clinging onto their head for dear life, ratty shirt slipping off their shoulder. Levi thinks about what his mother had said. Even though they had nothing, she had always stressed the importance of looking presentable. And now looking at Hanji, on the verge of a promotion to squad leader, Levi wonders how they have come this far with a pair of boots (worn and unpolished), and gear caked in mud and grime.
Levi sighs, “come here...” he says, and he guides Hanji to sit in front of him, cross-legged. They feel like a child again, when they’re forced by their mother to sit in front of the mirror while she brushes the knots out of their hair. “You’re a mess Hanji,” their mother had said. She says the same thing again when Hanji goes back to visit, shirt unironed and tucked carelessly into their trousers. Hanji stills when they feel Levi part their hair into three strands, starting from the top of their head.
“You’re braiding my hair?” Hanji asks, smile spreading across their face, amused.
“Just stay still.” Came the answer, and Levi works with deft fingers, tugging firmly to keep the braid in place.
“Where did you learn?”
“My mother... Used to watch her do it.”
“She must have been really beautiful...” Hanji muses, pulling their knees to their chest.
It’s quiet, but it’s the most comfortable silence Hanji has had with Levi. So they close their eyes to the feeling of his fingers threading through their hair.
• • •
Hanji does nothing to their braid the next morning, or the morning after, and the ones after that.
And predictably, there are strands of hair sticking out where they shouldn't. Levi pulls them aside when they are sneaking sugar cubes to their horse, or when they are securing the harness flush against their frame, or in the corridor on the way to the mess. He fixes their hair wordlessly.
• • •
The cadets notice that there's duality in the way squad leader Hanji appears. There's Hanji, completely on-brand, characteristic mess of brown hair held together with a hair tie, slipping down to frame their face, shirt wrinkled, gear battle-worn, and boots unpolished. And there's the other Hanji- shirt crisp and starched, gear well-maintained, boots polished to mirror-shine-
Hair held up in a braid.
"It's not possible that squad leader Hanji did that by themselves..." Jean had mused.
But beyond pure observation, the cadets fail to establish a pattern. They try to predict the weather or the intensity of their training on any particular day by the way Hanji looks. But the other veterans know there's an easier answer than one linked to an oracle.
• • •
Hanji hums a tune when Levi works on their hair, bits and pieces of old melodies they remember from their childhood, or tunes they hear Mike whistling. They had knocked on Levi's door that night, thinking maybe there's a pattern to be found, a routine to be established after the first time.
And sure as the seasons and the ones that come after, Levi pulls Hanji to sit. He parts Hanji’s hair into three strands. Three strands for good luck, he hears it in his mother's voice, gentle like the wind.
“I did this for Isabel too...” He says, matter-of-fact, but Hanji recognises the hurt in his voice. The guilt has faded to a dull throb- a testimony to time passed, to wounds healed and scars formed.
“So that’s why she always looked so adorable...” Hanji replies, gentle like the wind, and Levi smiles, patting the top of Hanji’s head, “done.”
Hanji takes a look in the mirror at their choppy hair held neatly in a French braid. Hanji beams, grin spreading across their face.
“Tell you what... Let’s go for a walk, Levi, I’ve got something to show you.” They walk a disused path that leads from the bunks to nowhere. Hanji explains that the toilets used to be out here, long before their time as a cadet.
They stop along the path when Hanji points up at a tree. “It’s Spring now so they’re in bloom...” Levi looks at the flowers on the trees, pink folds opening up to the sky. It’s dark and it’s difficult to see, but Hanji places a flower in his hand.
“They’re Magnolias...” Hanji smiles, “like Isabel...”
Levi traces a finger along the petals. Time stills in this moment.
“It’s strange though, this tree has always had white blooms, and now they’re pink!”
“It’s Isabel’s favourite colour.”
“Ah... That’s why...”
They sit under the magnolia tree, where the grass is gathering dew, but it doesn’t really matter. The air is crisp and it smells like life itself. Levi places the flower on Hanji’s lap. Hanji picks it up and tucks it behind Levi’s ear. He glowers at them but it didn’t have the intended effect, because Hanji is laughing.
Well. Maybe it did.
They watch as a Magnolia drifts from the trees, a blush of pink against the night. It lands on Hanji’s lap. “Oh! Aren’t you beautiful...” Hanji says.
Levi reaches over and tucks the flower in their braid.

better with time. Ch 7
one step forward.
While you recover from your illness, you and Levi grow closer, learning more about one another. (AO3)
Words: 1,749
“Y/N” you whispered, misty eyes staring at the page before you. There was a stunned audience before you. Erwin’s thick eyebrows rose in alarm, his lips parted in a silent gasp, Hange squealed, and although Levi looked to be unfazed as always, his cool grey eyes widened just a fraction before reverting back to his usual bored expression.
Then finally it hit you like a ton of bricks just as Hange squeezed the air out of your still aching lungs, lifting you off the ground and giving you a celebratory spin. You spoke. For this first time in over a hundred years, for the first time in the weeks that you’ve been human again, you finally spoke. You gave a small gasp before placing a hand over your throat. You cleared it before trying to speak again.
“Hello!” You said, although this time your voice sounded more like a toad’s croak and the strain was painful. Embarrassed at the sound you slapped you hand over your mouth to hush yourself, face reddening in humiliation. Levi clicked his tongue before crossing his muscular arms over his chest.
“Just a fluke...” He stated, unamused and slightly disappointed. You heaved a dejected sigh before plopping down onto the infirmary bed, a slight pout plastered onto your face. Erwin shook his head disapprovingly at Levi before placing his heavy hand atop your head.
“Progress is progress.” Was all he said, showing you a reassuring smile before making his way to exit the room to handle his business at the base. Levi gave you a curt nod, possibly his way or telling you to keep up the good work, before he followed Erwin’s lead. Hange kneeled down in front of you, a wide grin growing across their tan face.
“He’s right! The more we work at it the sooner you’ll be back in tip top shape, now say ah!” Hange comforted you, and they were right. This is progress, you can finally start communicating with these people and tell them everything you remember. Further gaining their trust and learning more about where you are and what the world is like now.
“Ahhh...” Hange swiftly pressed a flat wooden stick onto your tongue to have a proper look at your mouth and throat, it’s a little red and swollen back there but that’s mostly due to the pneumonia you’re still battling. You were given new medicine, a book to try reading aloud, and ordered back under the covers.
You had a few hours of alone time before Captain Levi came back in, you had been practicing your reading aloud but being timid you silenced yourself when the door knob started to turn.
“Don’t stop on my account.” He mumbled between sips of his warm tea. You frowned a bit, really not feeling comfortable with the way you sound right now. Your voice was dry and cracking after every syllable. It fried your nerves for even Hange, your favorite person to hear. As the awkward silence drew on Levi released an exasperated sigh and pinched the bridge of his slender nose.
He sat at his make shift desk before beginning to sign off on reports before he spoke again.
“How are you feeling?” He said, sounding a bit impatient and irritated. You simply shrugged your shoulders nervously, however Levi made a point to not look up from his work to see your silent answer .
“I can’t hear you...” He chided, he was going to make you speak one way or another. You huffed before clearing your throat softly, praying to whoever was listening to not embarrass you in this moment.
“Fine.” Was all you mustered, your voice sounding strained and scratchy. Levi fought the urge to cringe at the noise, instead choosing to ask a new question.
“Tea?” He offered, flipping and shuffling the pages on his desk to work on the next stack of reports.
“Yes, please.” Levi quirked his brow at your politeness, usually you'd offer him a fake smile before trundling off to the desk you had in the cellar to read. Maybe being sick calmed the attitude you seemed to have with him. He huffed internally; he couldn’t lie he felt inadequate wondering how he hadn’t noticed you were getting sick until mere moments before it was too late.
You coughed, you started sleeping in, you were sluggish for a time. He just figured you were the lazy type, or maybe he was neglecting your health because you were a titan. It pissed him off like no other thinking maybe he ignored the signs and allowed you to get sick. However, having noticed your questioning expression he shoved the intrusive thoughts to the back of his mind to worry about later in his free time. For now, he needed to worry about your tea.
<3
Another coughing fit had you doubled over in pain, Levi frowned and sucked his teeth listening to your groans and whimpers of discomfort. Of course, pneumonia won't heal in just one day, but was it normal to be in so much pain. Couldn’t you just be doped up on drugs and put to sleep for a week? Levi sighed before swiftly heading out the door, minutes later he returned with Hange holding them by the back of their collar. Seems he dragged them here to make you feel better, you gave him a thankful smile before another wave of wet coughs tore out of your burdened lungs.
The taste of iron ever-present on your tongue; you were thankful to wash the medicine down with the minty tea Levi brewed. The warmth of the tea tied together with the drowsy side effect of the medicine quickly lulled you to sleep. Levi’s eyes raked over your resting form before he shuffled in his chair to finish his reports.
Hange placed a warm wet cloth over your forehead before humming in satisfaction at your snoozing face. They hummed dreamily before turning to strike up conversation with Levi.
“How’s her voice, then?” They whispered cheerily , clasping their calloused hands together.
“Shitty as expected...” He said noncommittedly, refraining from tearing his concentrated eyes away from the papers before him. Hange chuckled quietly as not to wake you.
“Surprised you came to get me, I got lost in my work and missed the hour I was meant to come give a second dose of medicine.” Hange admitted sheepishly, while Levi checked his pocket watch for the time. Scowling at the hands pointing toward five o’clock in the evening, noticing Hange decided to be generous with their tardiness they were actually two hours late.
Levi narrowed his steely eyes at Hange threateningly before getting back to his report signing.
“Get back here in three hours. If you’re even a second late I won’t let you leave this room again!” He ordered watching Hange step away a safe distance before responding.
“You’re rather protective of her now, you get soft over the sick eh Levi?” They joked, not thinking the man would bother with a reply.
“No use letting her die now, whether I like it or not she’s essential presently. Now get out.” He answered nonchalantly. However, deep down it wasn’t just that you had knowledge locked deep inside your mind, he was feeling just a tad sorry for your condition. It’s not something he can change now however so it’s no use dwelling on the what-ifs, he thought.
<3
Three weeks passed of the same old routine. You wake up, cough a bit, read, and have small talk with Captain Levi over tea. The conversation was dry but from time to time you found yourself laughing at something he said rather funny. He’d tell you how the morning training went with the scouts, and how his favorite, Eren Yeager, was always so troublesome. Other scouts would ask how you were feeling, if you were alive still, and if they learned anything about who you were. He always ignored their pestering questions but he didn’t let you know that.
Insults seemed to be Levi’s only form of humor but you didn’t mind so much now that you’ve learned more about him as the weeks drew on. You were happy to talk with him, it eased the tension you once felt when you were around the man. He was still intimidating but you learned that his ever-present scowl was just his resting face.
Levi was an intelligent man, a clean freak, outspoken, and reliable apparently since you learned he’s humanity’s strongest soldier. You felt a little lack luster in comparison given you don’t remember much about yourself but he seemed to be picking up on the ghosts of your personality over the weeks.
You’re shy but no push-over, mild mannered, kind, and to Levi, a little irritating. You weren’t afraid to show your distaste in something he said, that signature pout you would wear when he insulted you a little too harshly. The scoffing you’d do when he complained about your shitty handwriting, how he wouldn’t let you out of his sight for more than an hour. He kept you on a tight leash, but now that your health was finally starting to improve it seemed he’d get only stricter from here.
“Unbelievable.” You grumbled. Scrunching up your nose at the fact that you’d finally be able to leave the infirmary behind and move into a bedroom of your own, however, Levi was in charge of the key for your door.
“Good night.” He replied, shutting the door in your face and locking it shut from the outside. In the hallway Levi and Hange heard your fist rap against the sturdy wood of the door a few times before you gave up and fell onto your stiff bed.
Levi smirked as he heard you coughing most likely from the dust you displaced by sitting on the bed. Hange noticed the minute smile and gave a hearty laugh before patting their friend on the shoulder.
“You two seem to be on good enough terms.” They commented with a cheeky grin. Levi rolled his eyes dramatically and scoffed, waving off the comment.
“Absolutely not.” He said before stalking off towards his office in the room across the hall, Hange barked with laughter once more before heading down the hallway towards their own office.
After dusting yourself off and changing your old ratty sheets to fresh ones from the infirmary you got back into your bed staring up hopefully at the ceiling.
“Maybe things can be okay here.”

Path Walker (Levi x OC)
Tumblr media
Summary: Emory and Erwin butt heads
AN: In future chapters there WILL be mentions of sexual assault I will put a warning on that specific chapter and other future chapters that mention mature content.
Word Count: 2.4K
A grunt escaped my lips as I fell to the ground, Annie loomed over me her icy blue eyes burning into my own. I risked a glance at Shadis who lurked on the edge of the clearing with that brooding expression, those hazel eyes locked on Annie and I. Annie followed my gaze and smirked,
"Nervous Black?" Annie purred, leaning forward to hoist me up.
"Never." I snarled, swinging my fist in a wide arc, effectively clipping her chin. She stumbled backwards, surprised by my dirty attack. Shadis raised an eyebrow at this move, not necessarily an impressive technique but definitely unexpected. I gave chase, closing the space between us, forcing Annie to take a defensive stance. When I first started sparring with Annie she almost appeared bored, now she was wide eyed and very alert. I kept my elbows close to my chest as I scanned her small frame for an opening. Annie was about the same size as me, making us a relatively equal match. She danced back a few more steps, seemingly desperate to get away from my lightning quick punches. This time I allowed her to retreat, my cobalt eyes taking in the way her chest heaved and her hair was displaced and slipping from her low bun. The usually composed Annie Leonhardt was only slightly undone but all of your comrades took note. I allowed my eyes to scan the crowd that had gathered. Shadis had also snuck up on Annie and I, his features hard and unforgiving.
"Draw?" I asked, my voice coming out airy as I spoke. Annie nodded, her chest still heaving as she recovered from our tussle. The crowd let out some 'aws' and 'boos' due to our little show ending so abruptly. I dusted off my pants as the rest of the cadets dispersed as Annie and I recovered. Annie held her hand out and I took it, shaking it wordlessly before departing to find a new opponent. I halted abruptly when Shadis called out to me in that hoarse voice of his.
"Black! Your presence is requested in my office." he stood a distance behind me as I raised an inquisitive brow. Odd, sparring practice still had at least another hour. Surely he wouldn't leave the cadets unattended to hold a private audience with me? The thought made my stomach clench with dread, I learned early not to trust men. I paused before saluting him and giving a curt nod. I walked briskly over the training grounds, kicking up dust as I crossed the vast clearing. Finally I found myself in front of the small building that the superiors used to hold formal meetings and also were the few offices on the property were located. I paused, a carriage catching my eyes, a solider stood by the horses, holding the reins. I squinted trying to see the symbol on his military jacket. But he was too far away, and I wasn't very keen on getting caught staring at a stranger. So I walked into the building, heading straight for Shadis' office. I knocked on the door, not expecting a response since Shadis was supervising the sparring practice.
"Come in." I jumped at the sound of the deep masculine voice on the other side. My hand hovered over the knob, had Shadis set me up? Was I about to get thrown in jail? No I hadn't done anything illegal, at least not recently. Was Shadis conspiring with those notorious human traffickers? Was I being sold? No I need to chill the fuck out. I gripped the door knob and pushed the door open. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of Erwin Smith seated comfortably in Shadis' chair, although he rose as soon as I entered. I saluted him quickly, leaving my hand over my heart even though he had dismissed me.
"You gave me a heart attack, thought I was going to be sold into slavery." I sighed as I crossed the room and sank into the uncomfortable wooden chair across the desk. Erwin furrowed his eyebrows and fought a smile off of his lips at my words.
"Why on earth would you think that? Have you been so terrible that Shadis has resolved to slavery as a threat to make you behave?" Erwin asked raising a bushy brow. I scoffed and leaned forward in my seat.
"No, I've been quite good actually." I said proudly, a smile curving on my lips. Erwin smiled fully before turning his attention to a folder that sat on the desktop.
"I've come here today to remind you of the deal that you agreed to three years ago." straight to business, gotta love the guy.
"Yes I recall." I said leaning back in my seat. God has it really been three years?
"Your graduation is in exactly two weeks, and I am very pleased with your rankings." Erwin said as he flipped through the file, his blue eyes suddenly flickered to my face.
"Oh, well I wish I could've made top ten but..." I trailed off, a blush dusting my cheeks.
"Ranked 11th in your class, still an impressive feat, this is a very competitive group of cadets." Erwin said giving me a pointed look. I could only nod at his words, still confused as to why he had come all this way to visit me.
"Anyway, I just wanted to ensure that you would be joining the Survey Corps as arranged, I'm sure as you know our numbers have decreased significantly." he said, slowly standing up, his tall build did make him a bit intimidating. I lifted my head a bit higher in an attempt to meet the mountain of a man without standing. He placed a large hand on the back of my chair, I allowed my eyes to flit over his calloused hand for a moment before turning to meet his cerulean gaze.
"I am aware." I spoke curtly, growing tired of his condescending tone.
"We are in need of promising recruits like yourself and to see you slip into another regimen would truly be devastating. Besides..." his hand slid off the back of my chair and onto my shoulder. My blood ran cold as he leaned down to my level and tightened his grip on my shoulder.
"There's a certain someone who is expecting you." his words sent goosebumps up my spine. It had been three whole years since I had seen Levi. Now of course Erwin was using him as an incentive to stay true to my word. I tensed under his grip, but still managed to nod.
"Does he ask about me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"No... But I know he thinks about you." Erwin said, I nodded grimly, not really knowing what else I expected, he was kind to even add the last part. I laughed bitterly, "Why do I even bother." I cupped my face in my hands and slowly drug them down my cheeks. Erwin still held my shoulder firmly.
"Just uphold your end of the deal." he whispered, with a final squeeze he released my shoulder and returned to Shadis' seat, sinking into the back rest.
"Don't worry I will." I said, my own sapphire eyes narrowing as I spoke lowly. He waved his hand, dismissing me. I turned and quickly left without saluting him, a small act of rebellion. Gods, fuck that, did he really doubt my integrity so much to make a journey out here to ensure that I remembered the deal? Outrageous, I didn't even want this I never wanted to be a solider. I was only a child when this deal was made. By none other than Isabel, which is the only reason why I have decided to uphold my end.
When Levi, Farlan, and Isabel had been arrested Isabel begged Erwin to go back to the flat and bring me with them, at first he refused. But then when he learned that I was twelve years old he changed his mind. Why you might ask? Simply because he realized that he could make me a solider, a pawn in the fight for freedom. So exactly one year after my family's arrest he returned and gave me false documents, freeing me from the underground city. I stumbled, leaning against the railing of the dining hall, so engrossed in my memories that I failed to see a large rock in my path.
I blinked, the images of the dank city still dancing across my mind. I looked up at the sky to see the sun sinking lower, dinner would begin soon. But my stomach was churning with nerves as I thought about the place I had grown up and the people who had ensured my survival. Isabel, Farlan, Levi, they had saved me gotten me out of that hellhole. Now only two of us remained and he couldn't even fucking write me. I straightened up, pushing off the railing I stormed back towards the barracks, a new found rage instilled in my chest. Or maybe it wasn't new at all, maybe it had always been there, a nagging in the back of my head. Levi was never keen with me, but surely he cared enough to at least ensure that Erwin fulfilled Isabel's wish. But then again maybe he only enforced the deal to honor Isabel?
I frowned, Isabel was one of the few people who showed me kindness during my short life, she was like a big sister to me. I finally found myself struggling to open the door to the barracks, my hands shaking with emotion. With a final shove I pushed into the room, the bunk beds all made with care. I flopped onto my bunk and buried my face in the stiff pillow. I allowed a few small tears fall into the fabric before I finally pulled away from the pillow and breathed a heavy sigh. I looked down where my pillow once rested to see the carefully folded paper that I kept stored underneath the pillow. I gingerly unfolded the worn parchment with shaky hands. My shoulders sagged when I finished, the image that stared back at me made my heart ache. A drawing that Farlan had done only a few weeks before everything changed, a family portrait of sorts, you and Isabel between Levi and Farlan, Levi was drawn with a slight curl of his lip, his own way of smiling.
Isabel looked vibrant and full of life, Farlan looked cool as a cat, and I looked like a snotty brat with missing teeth and ratty hair. At the sight of my messy hair I recalled I memory of Isabel attempting to comb it to no avail, Farlan tried and also ultimately failed. But Levi pinned me to the ground and viciously raked the brush through my hair, and succeeded in detangling the mess. You didn't talk to him for a week after that. A shaky breath left my lungs as I focused on Isabel's wide eyes and the way Farlan's had an arm carelessly thrown over my shoulders. What I wouldn't do to feel his warmth by me again, admittedly I'd had an innocent crush on Farlan. It was only natural seeing as he was the one to take me in so graciously. I yelped when the door banged open, quickly stuffing my precious keepsake back under the pillow. Ymir padded in first, her arms folded behind her head, Krista followed closely after her. Mikasa wandered in after the odd pair along with Sasha and Annie brought up the rear. The lot of us occupied this small section of the barracks, Annie was the only one to spare me a second glance before tossing her jacket onto the bed above mine.
"What did Shadis do with you?" she asked indifferently, such an odd tone that made me think she didn't really care, but still bothered to ask the question.
"He did nothing, it was an old acquaintance of mine that requested my presence." I said throwing my legs over the edge of the bed. Annie raised a brow but didn't question any further, she set to work on unbuckling her harness, and shortly after, stripping her white jeans off. When she tossed the clothing onto the ground a strange scent washed over me. It smelled simply raw a foreign scent that I had never caught a whiff of before. Just as quickly as it had drifted under my nose it was gone, leaving an odd feeling in my stomach. Hm how odd, I thought as I watched Annie pull on a pair of loose pants. Just as I opened my mouth to ask her if she had found a new perfume or something Sasha plopped down on my bed.
"Sorry you couldn't come to dinner, I saved you a little something though!" she beamed as she pulled a half eaten loaf of bread out of her jacket pocket. I couldn't help but smile, in an odd distant way, she reminded me of my dear Isabel, kind and hard headed.
"Thanks Sasha, I appreciate that." I gingerly accepted the gift, and took a bite out of the loaf. Sasha looked pleased with herself, she got up and left me alone on my bunk, Annie crawled up onto the top as I dusted crumbs off my bed. Come to think of it, that scent from earlier was familiar, maybe she used the same soap as someone? No it wasn't a manmade scent, it was strange but somehow I knew that it was uniquely her. Like pheromones or some shit, my nose wrinkled and suddenly I felt over powered by the scent. I looked up to see Ymir passing, her shoulders pulled back proudly. What the fuck, man they reeked how had I never smelled it before? They smelled like sweat mixed with an earthy musk, my eyes watered as the smell continued to overpower my senses. I fell into a sneezing fit shortly after Ymir had walked back to her bunk, drawing some curious glances my way as I continued to sneeze my brains out.
"You alright down there?" Annie asked, her head dangling upside down to look at me underneath her.
"Fine, just.... Allergies." I sniffled, rubbing my arm discreetly over my nose partially to wipe snot away and also to protect it from her scent. Annie brushed her bangs off her face to get a better look at me, her brows pinched together and her mouth opened slightly as if she was about to say something.
"Lights out cadets!" Shadis banged on the barracks door loudly, shutting up every girl in the room. Mikasa got up and extinguished the torch, plunging the room into darkness. I heard Annie settle back into her bed, and I followed suit, my nose still burning from the stench.

Exposing myself more! I was tagged by @lonelypalmtree , thank you friend! This is going to be fun! 💜
slow burn or love at first sight // fake dating or secret dating // enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers // oh no there’s only one bed or long-distance correspondence // hurt-comfort or amnesia // fantasy au or modern au // mutual pining or domestic bliss // smut or fluff // canon-compliant or fix-it // reincarnation or character death // one-shot or multi-chapter // kid fic or road trip fic // arranged marriage or accidental marriage // high school romance or middle aged romance // time travel or isolated together // neighbors or roommates // sci-fi au or magic au // body swap or gender bend // angst or crack // apocalyptic or mundane
Angst is my crack. I love it. Give me it all. Same with dystopian anything. Making characters suffer is so fun.
But I also like some good fluff, especially if it’s canon-compliant fluff. Fix-it fics hold a special place in my heart, but there’s nothing like caring for your fav traumatized babies with some good old fashioned cuddling.
Another thing I think gets glossed over is Kid! fics. Seriously, there is so much you can do with it. Want an adorable mom and child scene? Say no more, I’m already on it. Want a ratty violent brat making friends with a genius brat? I’m there, 100%. (I’ve been writing kid fics for Levi, Hange, and Erwin and I may post them at some point)
(I also have awful baby fever atm, so we may get some Parent! Veterans soon. I don’t make the rules.)
Okay, I feel like my guts have been thoroughly spilled, so I’m going to tag @jour-de-printemps , @casualgnome , and @leviackermanyo !!!

Tall Blonde with One Sugar
It was absolutely pouring down the rain as Erwin left the library. Nile, his friend and roommate offered to give him a ride back to their apartment if Erwin didn’t mind waiting for Nile to get out of class. Erwin, of course didn’t mind waiting. He was able to work on his paper after his shift at the library, and he didn’t relish the idea of making the 30 minute walk in the rain. So, he waited.
And waited…
And waited…
Finally, an hour past their scheduled meeting time, Erwin decided to walk out to the parking lot to see if Nile was still there, but his spot was disappointingly vacant. It would be hours before the bus ran again, so Erwin just took a deep breath and sucked it up before jogging home. He would make sure to yell at Nile when he got there.
Not surprisingly, he was completely soaked by the time he made back to the apartment complex. He was cold, uncomfortable, and hungry. He wanted a hot shower, dry clothes and some generic ramen before he finished his paper. However, what he got instead was a sock hanging from the knob of his apartment door.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Erwin muttered to himself. He knocked on the door, in the name of self-preservation, and called out, “Nile, please tell me this is a joke. It’s bad enough you ditched me on campus.”
All he received in response was: “Marie, fuck baby, you’re such a bad girl.”
“Not happening.” Erwin pulled out his phone to call his friend Hange, but the ancient flip phone was dead. He checked his watch. Yup, still two more hours for the bus to arrive to go back toward campus. He didn’t want to have to sit in the library soaking wet, so walking back was out of the question as the rain continued. He pulled out his laptop and checked the wi-fi signal. If he stayed against the wall, he would be able to work on his paper until the bus came back around. He would consider that a win. He dropped his ratty, old backpack to the floor and plopped down beside it. He only hoped he had enough battery on his laptop to either wait out the bus or his roommate.
——
Levi held back a string of curses and he fought with the apartment complex’s front door and his umbrella. It was a miserable day, to say the least, and he looked forward to seeing his bed.
“Oi, heads up,” Levi heard a voice call as he raced up the stairs, reaching his floor’s landing. He almost tripped over the young man in the hallway floor. The tall blond was pressed up against the wall beside his apartment door, wearing a rain-drenched Trost University hoodie, a pair of ragged jeans, and ratty sneakers (the left one was untied). There was a tired-looking, beat-up laptop resting on his thigh.
“Why are you in the hallway?” Levi asked him as he stepped around, afraid of dislodging the ancient laptop, and sending it crashing to certain death.
“I’ve been sexiled,” the blond answered, pointing to the sock on the door handle. Levi sighed.
That was the bad part of living this particular apartment complex. It was walking distance to Trost University’s campus, and, therefore, filled with college kids. However, he also needed to live close to campus because he was the top trauma surgeon at the University hospital, and had to be able to get to work quickly in case of an emergency. So, here he was, tripping over a student after a grueling 18 hour shift.
“That would make sense if you lived in a dorm, not a two bedroom apartment.” Levi rubbed his temples, exhaustion making his head hurt.
“I think they might be in the living room?” By the sounds of it, the blond was right.
“So, why the hallway?”
“I am working on a paper, so I need wi-fi for research. I would just go back to campus, but it’s pouring rain. I don’t have a car, and the bus doesn’t run for another two hours. Hopefully my laptop battery holds out that long, or they finish…”
“I’m so going to regret this,” Levi sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Come on. You can work on your paper at my place.”
“Thank you, Mr. Ackerman!” The blond hurried and gathered his things and stood, rising up to tower almost a foot above Levi.
“Just don’t make a mess and don’t rob me or some shit.” Levi unlocked his door and entered. “And take off your shoes, Edward.”
“Erwin, my name is Erwin. Where can I set up?” The blond toed off his shoes and Levi noted that his right sock had a hole in it.
“The bar in the kitchen has better light than the dining room. I’m afraid my office is full of patient files right now or I would let use it.”
“No, no, the kitchen is great! Better than the hallway and it definitely beats going back to campus in the rain. Thank you very much, Mr. Ackerman.”
“Yeah. Just stop calling me Mr. Ackerman. Levi is fine. I’ll write down the wi-fi password for you, and then, I’m going to bed. Lock the door on your way out, and tell Nigel that he has a bedroom with a door for a reason.”
“Nile.”
“What?”
“My roommate. His name is Nile.”
“I really don’t care. Goodnight, Edward.” With that, Levi scrawled down just wi-fi password and went to bed. The clacking of a keyboard lulled him to sleep.
When he woke a few hours later, all traces of his young neighbor were gone except for a lone sheet of notebook paper with ‘Thank You, Levi’ scrawled messily across the front. Levi just yawned and tossed the note in the trash.
——
“Did you get your paper done last night? I tried texting you but you never responded.” Erwin looked over at his best friend, Hange as they sat down beside him.
“Yeah, no thanks to Nile. First, he ditched me on campus after offering me a ride. I had to jog home in the pouring rain. If that wasn’t bad enough, I came home to a sock on the door. He and Marie were going at it in the living room for the better part of the evening. I may never sit on my couch again.”
“Nile is such a bastard. I don’t know why you’re still friends with him. I mean he is dating your ex...the ex that was cheating on you...with him. I just don’t know about you.” Hange leaned against him.
“It’s really okay. I mean, Marie and I really didn’t have that much chemistry anyway. Nile has been a friend since kindergarten. I can’t throw that away over some girl that I only felt luke-warm about.” Erwin shrugged.
“You kill me,” Hange groaned into his shoulder. “So, did you come back to campus, or what? If you would have answered your texts, you could have come over to my place.”
“Sorry about that, but my phone died, and I didn’t have my charger in my bag. My neighbor actually felt enough pity for me that he let me come over and bum off his wi-fi.”
“Wait, what? Your neighbor? The doctor?” Hange perked up, mischievous grin on their face.
“Yeah, but I still think he hates me. He calls me Edward all the time.”
“I doubt he hates you. He did let you come over to finish your paper after all.”
“I guess there is a bright side.”
——
“Were we obnoxious, inconsiderate assholes in college?” Levi asked as he paid for his lackluster cafeteria lunch.
“Levi, you have been an obnoxious, inconsiderate asshole as long as I’ve known you. That didn’t change after Med School,” his best friend, Mike, answered.
“Zacharias, the only obnoxious, inconsiderate asshole I see here is you.”
“Seriously though, why do you ask?”
“My neighbors. I came home yesterday to find one of them kicked out by his roommate and the roommate’s girlfriend. The sorry bastard was camped out in the hallway floor trying to write a paper. Even at the height of your lust-filled rutting with Nanaba, I don’t remember you kicking me out of the apartment.”
“Why would I? I had a separate bedroom.”
“They were apparently in the living room.”
“Poor guy. You didn’t yell at him for being in the hallway, did you?” Mike took a bite of his salad.
“I had no idea you thought so little of me,” Levi sniffed. “Actually, I hate to disappoint you, but I let him come over to my place to finish his paper, thank you very much.”
“He must be hot. Shame on you, Levi. Praying on a younger man like that.”
“You’re an idiot.”
Mike noticed that Levi never did deny that he thought his neighbor was hot, but wisely kept his mouth shut.
——
“Nile, you bastard, come on! I can’t believe you right now!” Erwin pounded on the bathroom door.
“Go away, Erwin. Nile is busy,” answered a soft, feminine voice.
“I need the shower. I have to get ready for work. Can’t you guys do this after I leave?”
“Sorry buddy, but you should have showered at the gym,” answered before moaning lewdly.
“Really? I’m pretty sure you know my schedule by now, and I shouldn’t reasonably expect to not have access to a shower in an apartment that I pay rent for. Rent I can’t pay if I don’t go to work. Dawk open the fucking door!”
“Go away, Erwin.”
“You are an asshole!” Erwin banged on the door one last time. He grabbed his phone and dialed Hange. “Come on, pick up.”
“This is Hange leave a message...”
“I hate my life,” Erwin muttered to himself. He gathered his clothes and toiletries, swallowed his pride, and left the apartment.
——
Levi was listening to the television drone in the background while he cleaned his kitchen. He was in such a state of mind numbing scrubbing that the knock on his front door startled him. He looked at it for a moment as if it were something foreign. He hardly ever received visitors, and never unexpectedly. Another knock had him walking to the door. He flung it open to see a sweaty, desperate-looking Erwin.
“You’re home,” Erwin sputtered as if he expected otherwise.
“You’re observant,” Levi grumbled.
“I really hate to bother you, but can I bum a shower? Nile and Marie are, well, I’m sure you can figure it out. But I have to be at work soon, and I would go back to campus and shower at the gym, but I would miss my bus. I really can’t afford to miss work.”
“I’m really starting to hate your roommate,” Levi sighed. Erwin’s face crumbled.
“Yeah, he’s an ass, and so am I. I’m sorry, Levi, I shouldn’t bother you with my problems. I’ll just try Hange again. Thanks for the other day, though.” Erwin turned to leave.
“I never said you couldn’t use my shower. Get your ass in here. I’ll go get you a towel.” Levi opened the door to allow Erwin to enter.
“Thank you, Levi. I’ll just start showering on campus...daily.” Erwin followed Levi to the bathroom.
“I’ll be right back with a towel. I’m sure you know how to work it.”
“Yep, same as mine,” Erwin said, pulling his shirt over his head. Levi was treated to the sight of a half naked Erwin. And Levi just knew that the guys he went to college with were never looked like this, with smooth skin and hard muscles. (It was damn good thing, too, or he would have flunked out miserably and never made into med school.) He clenched his jaw, and reminded himself that Erwin was probably at least ten years younger than him. It was probably illegal just to look.
He turned away with a blush and a scowl in order to retrieve the towel. When he returned, Erwin was down to his faded boxer briefs, and obviously lacked any sort of body consciousness. And really, with a body like that, who could blame him? Levi mentally shook his head and grunted when Erwin let out a soft, sheepish ‘thank you.’
Erwin emerged twenty minutes later, hair neatly parted, shrugging on a navy blue suit jacket that was well worn, but obviously well taken care of. His red tie was just draped around his neck and Levi noted that his white dress shirt, while neatly pressed and cleaned, was missing the top button as it was safety pinned together. His belt was cheap and starting to fray and crack around the buckle. The slacks were slightly too tight around the thighs and the hem was a little threadbare in the back. Even in light of all this, Erwin wore a suit well...very well.
“Thank you again, Levi. I’m so sorry I had to bother you.” Erwin’s voice broke Levi from his daze, and he blinked a few times before meeting Erwin’s gaze. The boy had the bluest eyes…
“It’s fine,” Levi dismissed. “Just where do you work if you have to dress like that?”
“I’m working for Shadis’ senate campaign. I get civics credits toward my Master’s as well as a paycheck. It pays better than a TA position and the hours are more flexible.” Erwin’s long fingers tied with silk of the tie with relative ease.
“I see. His headquarters is downtown, right?”
“Yeah, that’s why I have to take the bus. It’s too far to walk.”
“Come on, I’ll give you a ride.” Levi stood and grabbed his keys.
“Levi, really, it’s too much. I wouldn’t want to bother you anymore than I already have,” Erwin protested with sincerity.
“It’s fine. I don’t mind and you didn’t expect or ask me to give you a ride. Come on. I have some errands to run anyway.” Levi opened the door and held it for Erwin, posture not allowing for any argument.
“Okay, thank you, Levi.”
If asked, Levi wouldn’t be able to answer as to why he wanted to help this kid so badly. But something told Levi that he maybe all that Erwin had, and it was just sad that the most dependable person in Erwin’s life was practically a complete stranger.
——
It had been almost two weeks before Levi noticed that Erwin’s presence was missing. He hadn’t realized that the younger man was such a part of his daily routine. They greeted each other in the mornings as they started their day, they brushed past each other on the stairwell on Saturday afternoons, and they nodded in acknowledgment when collecting their mail. But Erwin has been strangely absent lately. Levi frowned.
Maybe the roommate broke up with his girlfriend?
No, the thump a giggle out in the hallway that morning before Levi left for work let him know that the flame was still burning fiercely. Erwin was around before the girlfriend situation, even if Levi only subconsciously acknowledged that the blond was part of his routine. Levi hated to deviate from his routine. He sighed as he put his work shoes in his locker and slammed it shut. It really shouldn’t bother him.
And if he drove by campus on his way home from work, it was because he wanted a change of scenery. And definitely not because it was raining again and Erwin might need a ride.
At least that’s what he kept telling himself as he pulled up beside a sodden, tired-looking Erwin, walking down the sidewalk, clutching his backpack to his chest. He pulled up to the curve and rolled down his window.
“Get in, you idiot.” Levi watched as Erwin’s head perked up and looked around for a moment.
“Levi? You scared me.”
“Get in the car, Erwin,” he growled again.
“I couldn’t. I’m soaked,” Erwin protested as he looked at the sleek black Mercedes, no doubt taking in consideration the soft leather of the interior. Levi pulled a towel from his work bag and spread it over the passenger seat.
“Get your ass in the car.”
“Yes, sir.” Erwin hurried and got in at, trying not to drip everywhere.
“Roommate ditch you again?” Levi asked as Erwin settled in.
“No. I was going to take the bus, but my pass has expired. I won’t have enough money to get another one until I get paid next week. Hange doesn’t have class today, so I didn’t want to inconvenience them. So, I walked.” Levi noticed him absently playing with the strap of his backpack. It was completely torn from its moorings and there was a large hole where the stitching came loose and the bag ripped from the weight.
“Did you drop it?” Erwin looked at Levi for a moment, confused.
“Oh, my bag? Uh, yeah, yeah I did.” Erwin shrugged it off. “I’m hoping Hange or Nile may have something I can borrow until I can find something. It will probably be a couple of paychecks before I can save up enough to buy something decent.”
“Did your laptop survive?”
“I’m...I’m not sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t. Luckily I have backups for everything because I’ve been anticipating it to die any day now. I’ll just have to spend more time at the library.” Erwin’s smile was as bright as the sun, but his blue eyes held a little bit of tension.
“Is that why you’ve been scarce lately? You’re preparing for the eminent death of your laptop?”
“That’s part of it. I’ve been working more hours at the library when I can to try to get some extra money, just in case. Plus, it’s midterms. It’s easier to study, and shower, on campus, since I never know when Nile is going to have Marie over.”
“It’s your apartment, too. You should remind him of that,” Levi scolded as he parked.
“Yeah, it doesn’t do much good. I think it’s more Marie than Nile. She’s just trying to make me jealous.”
“Why? What would it matter to her?”
“Oh, Marie used to be my girlfriend. We broke up because she said I didn’t pay enough attention to her. That, and she was sleeping with my roommate.”
“Excuse me. Did you just say she was sleeping with Nile while you were dating her? And you are okay with this?” Levi pauses for a second. “I mean, unless that’s something you’re into…”
“Oh, no, it wasn’t like that.” Erwin blushed. “It really didn’t bother me because I think she was a lot more into the relationship than I was. I’m okay with them being together, but I think she wants to show me what I’m missing.”
“is it working? ,” Levi asked, curious.
“Not even a little bit,” Erwin laughed. “Quite the opposite, really.”
“Joke’s on her, then.” Silence descended between them as Levi cut the engine.
“Well, thanks for the ride, Levi.” Erwin awkwardly gathered the torn, sodden excuse for a back pack and reached for the door.
“I don’t understand. Why don’t you set your foot down when it comes to your roommate?” Levi’s words made him pause.
“Well, Nile has always been my friend-“
“Bullshit. That doesn’t matter. Do you think I don’t call out my friends on their shit?”
“Truth is: I can’t afford to be the nagging roommate. Because I’m in the Master’s program, I can’t stay in campus housing. I can’t afford rent on my own for a place this close to campus. I don't have a car and bus schedules don’t give me the flexibility to move further away from campus. I can barely make ends meet now. If I was to nag Nile too much, he would just move out, or expect me to. I can’t afford the penalty for breaking the lease, but he can. Either way, I’m stuck just sucking it up. The inconvenience is worth not being homeless.”
“Your family won’t help?”
“Well, um, well, my mom, I haven’t heard from her since she married husband number three when I was 12. My dad…” Erwin’s eyes took on a glassy sheen. “I haven’t...we don’t...it’s been about a year since we spoke.”
“Why’s That?” Levi flinched. “Sorry, it’s none of my business-“

Lostcauses Fic: Building on the Past chapter 2
Second chapter of the dumb Construction AU fic, based on the Sukiya Collaboration character bios.
Saturday evening found Levi standing in front of his open closet, scowling at the neat rows of white dress shirts and black office slacks with a growing sense of panic and frustration.  What the hell was he supposed to wear?  Levi never went out, unless it was for the occasional after work drink with Hanji, so he had nothing but his work clothes, a couple of pairs of ratty old black jeans and a pile of faded t-shirts. If he turned up at Erwin’s in his work clothes he’d look like a dick, but if he just wore jeans and t-shirt he’d look like he hadn’t bothered to make an effort. In desperation, he pulled the least tatty pair of jeans from the wardrobe and with a blessed stroke of inspiration remembered the sweater Hanji had bought him for his birthday the previous year.  He found it languishing beneath the pile of t-shirts and pulled it on.  It was soft lambswool in dark bottle green and though it was a little long in the sleeves and a little tight across the chest, Levi had to admit that it was at least passable and the colour didn’t look too bad on him.
Finding a jacket was more of a problem.  His winter overcoat was far too heavy for the mild weather, and other than that he only had the suit jackets he wore to work and a hoodie that was hardly fit for decent company.  Unless…pushing aside his work clothes and reaching into the very back of his closet, Levi pulled out the old black leather jacket he’d worn all through college. He pulled it on in front of the mirror, surprised to discover it still fitted, and even more surprised to see his younger self gazing back at him. Suddenly Levi was painfully aware of the passage of time.  Where had the last ten years gone?  How the hell had he ended up here?  A salary man with an ordinary job and a dull routine, with nothing to look forward to at the end of day but his own morose company.
Frustrated and unaccountably angry with himself, Levi pulled off the leather jacket and stuffed it back into the furthest recess of his wardrobe, where his hand brushed against something soft, something familiar.  A jacket made of fine black wool, beautifully tailored in a style that had fallen out of fashion years before.  A jacket much too big for a man of Levi’s size. Carefully, he slid the jacket off the hanger, where it had hung undisturbed for years, and lifted it to his face.  It smelled faintly musty, but the fabric was soft against his cheek.  Levi closed his eyes.
