Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling / vice-versa :

I feel like 049 would be the one doing it. I can very clearly visualize him getting confused for a moment while trying to push open a door, then realizing his mistake, deeply sigh in embarrassment, and pulling the door open. 035 would be the type to getting so focused on a discussion that he just runs face first into doors.

Who doodes little hearts all over the desk with their initials inside them :

035 would definitely do that. Ya know, he has this artistic vibe after all so even if this is a rather simplistic and basic way to express your love, classics are always the bests. Plus 049 is way too clean and serious to draw on furniture. He'll be touched however if 035 would carve their initials on a tree. So romantic!

Who starts the tickle fights :

When 035 gets a new host, 049 likes to test its sensitivity. In order to do so, what better way than to tickle the host? He finds it delightful and adorable when 035 squirms away from his fingers. The mask has such an appealing giggle! 035 always wants to fight back, but sadly, 049 is not ticklish...😔

Who starts the pillow fights :

I don't know if they would want to have a pillow fight, but if they did, 035 would start them. Imagine him getting bored, observing his marvelous husband sleeping, and then deciding to violently tear him away from his peaceful slumber, by smashing a pillow on his face (because 035 has chaotic bitch impulses and we all know it). 049 fucking SNAPS and immediately grab another pillow to throw it so hard on 035 that the mask would be detached from the host. Birb doctor would be grumpy for the rest of the day.

Who falls asleep last, watching the other with a small affectionate smile :

They both technically don't need to sleep, but 049 enjoys sleeping because it helps him clearing up his mind and truly relax for a few hours. 035 sleeps occasionally, but most of the time he just thinks it's a waste of time (time is precious when your host is constantly decaying). So 035 would be the one watching 049 fall asleep. He likes to see his dear doctor looking so peaceful and content. Plus, it allows him to help 049 calm down whenever he's having a nightmare.

Who mistakes salt for sugar :

035 has more difficulties to taste things, as the tongue is one of the first thing to rot when he has a host. He can technically eat when his host is fresh, but that doesn't last very long, and he can't taste all the flavors in food. So I can see him baking a cake with salt without even realizing it. 049's always here to correct him however. With a bit of guidance, 035 can be a surprisingly good cook!

Who lets the microwave play the loud beeping sound at 1 am in the morning :

Definitely 035. He's way too selfish to care about waking up people in the middle of the night. He practically doesn't sleep, so he wonders around a lot during the night, being a noisy but fabulous bitch as always. 049 however, would be careful not to make too many noise when he works late. A healthy sleeping schedule is the key to a healthy life after all!

Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines :

Oh boy 049 would be terrible at it. So it's obviously 035 who does them, but completely ironically. The mask onky chooses the cheesiest, cringiest pick up lines to amuse (or annoy) his darling. And if he chooses his line wisely, he would even be able to make 049 all flustered~

Who rearranges the bookshelf in alphabetical order :

049 is very organized and likes when everything is perfectly clear, complete, symmetrical and in the right place (probably why he likes 035's appearance so much, the mask has a perfect face!). I can imagine him messing around with some files by classifying them alphabetically in a way to relax (that would make every searcher very confused afterwards because files are supposed to be classified with numbers, not letters).

Who licks the spoon when they're baking cookies :

It's one of 049's guilty pleasure. He likes sugary food a lot. Just imagine 035 preparing cookies and 049 discreetly licks the spoon because it's just sO YUMMY but he'll never admit it. 035 always pretends he didn't notice it, he thinks it's really cute and it makes 049 happy. So he doesn't say anything because otherwise the doctor will stop.

Who buys candles for dinner even though there's no special occasion :

Unsurprisingly, 035. What can I say? He's a charmer, he sure as hell can be romantic. Every once in a while he tries to make an effort to be more thoughtful and wants to please his other half, so he prepare a nice French diner (049's favorite). 049, every single time, is immensely appreciative of this. Watch the doctor blush and chuckle as 035 behaves like a drama queen as always and straight up lays down on the table besides the food in a more than suggestive way. "Eat me like one of your French girls~", "Dear, you're on fire.", "I know right-", "No, i mean, literally. Your host's hair is on the candle."

Who draws little tattoos on the other with a pen:

Neither. If you try to draw on 049's "skin" he'll murder you. And I don't think 049 would be the one to draw on 035's host. He has no particular pleasure in doodling. He prefers fully detailed anatomical drawings.

Who comes home with a new souvenir magnet every time they go on vacation:

Probably 035. I don't think 049 would be interested in acquiring material objects from a travel. He wants to gain memories, experience and knowledge. Of course, 035 wants to gain those too, but he's more materialistic. So keeping little souvenir is a must.

Who convinces the other to fill out those couple surveys in the back of the magazine :

049 would never be interested in doing these. 035 probably isn't neither, but maybe he would try to compete one out of curiosity? 049 would groan during the entire survey, grumbling that he doesn't have time for this futility. 035 insists, it's only a test! He won't bother him after that one! They end up doing a couple more because they're having more fun than they imagined.

Japanese Strawberry Shortcake

Fluffy, airy and moist, this Japanese Strawberry Shortcake consists of layers of delicate sponge cake generously filled with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Whether celebrating an occasion or treating yourself to afternoon tea, this is a winning centrepiece!

I love Japanese cakes, it was therefore no question that I had to include one on my blog! And where else am I better off starting other than with the famous strawberry shortcake? The sponge itself is super soft and elastic, making it much lighter than typical cakes. It is a genoise cake, meaning it is made by whisking air into the eggs to make it rise rather than using leavening agents like baking powder or soda. With two to three layers, they are then delicately filled with freshly whipped cream, and an explosion of ripe strawberries, creating an elaborate symphony of flavours and textures with each bite.

Strawberry shortcake is one of, if not the most, popular cake in Japan. It is formally bought to celebrate special events whereby it is a birthday party or Christmas. Even for something more casual like a small get together, this cake is perfect for such an occasion; I also guarantee it will bring you compliments all round.  

Whilst browsing the internet, I was surprised to learn that such an elegant cake could be made so easily! It used largely pantry items, making it already very accessible for the amateur baker. Its assembly of the layers and external decoration was also the perfect opportunity for me to try out my new baking utensils! 

I was heavily inspired by HidaMari’s recipe for strawberry shortcake. After watching her video, I decided to treat myself to a cake leveller and a turntable which she is seen to be using in her video. For how inexpensive they were, I was surprised at how robust the quality was, and also how much I enjoyed working with them - it made decorating the cake infinitely easier, quicker and less frustrating (I am a perfectionist - forgive me!). So for the sake of my blog, I am very excited to review my lovely new purchases.

The first one I used was the cake leveller to cut the cake into neat, equal layers. Although this step can be done ordinarily with a serrated knife, I loved just how clean and straight the cut was. And even in this instance, whereby the cake was going to be hidden with frosting, the leveller still gave me a quiet satisfaction at how professional and seamless the inside was going to look when cut! After all, the interior is arguably the most important part of this cake as it reveals those carefully placed strawberries!

Once cut, it was time to move on to my second new toy - the cake turntable! Oh, the joys of finally having a cake stand (albeit it’s not the most glamorous one). A cake turntable is a rotary cake stand used to decorate cakes and assemble them. The turntable itself is very sturdy and moves smoothly without difficulty. It even came in a set with a flat and angled palette knife, and three icing smoother tools - obvious essentials when it comes to making the most professional, streamlined cake! This was fabulous for my needs and I am now well equipped for all my subsequent bakes.

Whilst on the topic of decorating, I think it would be worth mentioning that I did encounter one small problem whilst decorating this cake. In true Gingery Ginseng fashion, I wanted to adorn the top with a ring of whipped cream florets between the negative space of the strawberries. I, however, got far too carried away with whipping the cream that it churned to butter! HAHA! 

It was a shame that my culinary vision did not come true, but needless to say, this cake was extremely delicious. Accordingly, I still wanted to share my baking experience, and the delights of my new toys, with all you lovely readers!

With all said, let’s move on to the recipe!

Ingredients:

Sponge cake

30g butter

30ml milk

4 eggs 

110g sugar

20g honey

120g plain flour (sifted twice to ensure a smooth batter.)

Syrup

2 tablespoons of water

3 tablespoons of sugar

1 tablespoon of any liquor of choice (I used white rum but I have seen recipes with whiskey and even flavoured spirits like Cointreau.)

Decoration

500ml double cream

50g sweet condensed milk (optional)

40g icing sugar

halved strawberries

Directions:

Sponge Cake

Line an 8-inch cake tin with baking parchment, and preheat the oven to 170ºC.

Begin with whisking the eggs until combined. Add the sugar and continue to whisk. Then place it in a bain-marie (be careful to not have it too hot as it will scramble the eggs!) and continue to whisk until the temperature rises to 40 ºC. 

Using a stand mixer, add the honey and whisk the batter until pale, thick, and tripled in volume. Meanwhile, in a second bowl, melt the butter and whisk in the milk. Set the second bowl aside.

Removing the bowl from the stand mixer, sift half of the flour to the batter and gently fold through. Once incorporated, add the remaining flour and again, gently fold through. Make sure to do this step slowly so that the mixture does not deflate.

Add a spoonful of the batter to the butter mixture and mix well. This extra step is essential because the fat in the butter will deflate the batter if we add it directly. Add the mixture back to the batter and mix. 

Pour the batter into the cake tin and drop it onto the counter to release any air bubbles.

Bake in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes.

Once cooked, immediately remove from the tin and let it cool on a wire rack. Cover the cake with a damp towel to keep it moist.

Assembly

Prepare the strawberries, halving them, and removing the husks. 

Make a syrup in a small bowl with the water, sugar and liquor. Microwave for a minute to dissolve the sugar.

Whisk the double cream, condensed milk and icing sugar until stiff.

With a serrated knife or cake leveller, cut the cake horizontally into two layers.

Place the bottom of the cake on a plate or turntable, and brush the syrup over its top and sides. This will keep the sponge moist.

Spread a layer of whipped cream on the cake. Arrange the strawberries on the sponge and then coat with another layer of cream. (Admittedly I forgot to do two layers of cream but I preferred it this way!)

Place the top layer of the sponge cake and brush with the syrup.

Cover the exterior with whipped cream. Use an icing spatula to achieve a smooth finish by rotating the turntable towards you. Remove any excess cream.

Decorate with cream and strawberries. Other fruits such as blueberries can be used.

Amanda is standing at her workbench heaving on the end of a crowbar the first time it happens.

“Just give me a second! I’m nearly- there!” 

“What the hell are you going on about now?” A barrister pokes her nose into the workshop, observing the unfolding events from over her glasses. “I know you like your own company and tend to have these ‘stern’ discussions with yourself, but yelling at no one is actually pretty fucking weird, Amy.”

“Don’t call me that.” Ripley fires at her with a dangerous glance, wiping away horrific spatters of tin scented fluid, it’s tang reminiscent of aluminum on fillings. “Also, I was yelling at you for being an impatient ass on my comms.” 

“Mm, no, I wasn’t.” 

“Who else could it have been, Nina?” 

She hums, squinting down at the screen, an insistent banner flashing white and grey along the top.

Eat… 18:30.

“My God you’re an idiot, Ripley. That’s not a message, it’s an alarm.”

“What? I don’t have any alarms, not for this time of day.” Amanda brushes the device off the table and into her bag on the floor. “And name calling, really?”

“I was joking.” She holds her shoulder, crossing her ankles to lean fully on the other woman. “But since you’re already distracted, come and sit down. I bought lunch.” She gently touches the cold wrist of a synthetic, laying motionless on the table. “If that’s alright by you, Samuels? Because I swear, even you won’t be able to make me give her mouth to mouth if she faints again.”

“He won’t be able to make you do anything until he’s fixed, Taylor.” The engineer rolls her eyes and follows the heavenly smell of curry wafting from the crib room.

“You really think you can?”

“I have to…”

The next time it happens she had fallen asleep using a bicep of the deactivated- the temporarily dead- android as a pillow. Her chair up as high as it will go and his hand in her own.

Sleep… 23:59.

“W’the fuck is going on?” Amanda mumbles into the synthetic’s side, lazing her arms over his chest to look at the screen. She wonders if she had installed a dodgy app, or if there had been a bug in the last batch of updates. 

She yawns, swipes at the alert, and decides it probably had the right idea anyway. 

Goodnight.

“Goodnight… I guess.”

Over time, the alarms had become progressively more specific. Mentioning conversations she’d had in private, even alone. Offering her advice, greeting her, wishing she had a fabulous day or night. Shockingly even to her, she never thought it was creepy, going back through her downloads to determine they had in fact been from the phone, to the phone. It was sweet. Familiar in the way it was worded like an old friend. 

“Hey.” Taylor, as had become routine, appears at her door for visit one out of three today. “I bought coffee.”

“Oh my God, you read my mind.” 

“I do, everyday, at exactly seven in the morning.”

“Yeah and what time do you call this?” Amanda gratefully trades the cup for a pair of soggy tin-snips and takes a drink, her fluid covered hands sticking to the paper as they swap back. Her friend holding it by the lid at an arms length.

“Late. Late is what I make of it. I’ve been at work since five absolutely snowed in with paperwork. So, fend for yourself for lunch? And don’t stay up all night, I know you’re excited, but get some rest and do it properly. Please. You only get-”

“One shot.” Amanda nods, pulling at a creamy tube full of metallics. “I know.” 

Her phone blares once, and then again. 

“Are you still getting those?” Nina asks indifferently, unable to counteract the hand over her upper stomach attempting to hold her bagel down as out of the chest comes what looks like an organ, attached at the base by colour coded wires.

“Yah." 

“Aren’t you going to check it?”

It rings one more time in a different tone and Amanda supposes she should. The advice it offered had sometimes been handy, telling her the microwave had gone off, or the ice had melted in her bourbon and coke. This, however, was eerie.

Pay attention. 

Please don’t cut the red wire.

It vibrates a final time.

“Holy fuck.” Amanda flips a page on the next table over, quoting from it. “‘Disconnect from power source before removing fuel cell… red wire last… prone to violent combustion…’ Holy fuck." 

“Someone’s definitely watching over you.” Nina breathes a sigh of relief. 

“I might- yeah, I might sit down for my coffee today.” 

“Good idea. I’ll leave you to it.” 

Amanda nods her goodbye with a quick hug and regards the synthetic at a safe distance. It isn’t until hours later that she moves, or even speaks again, shocked into silence by the fact she could have killed her friend and less importantly, lost an arm in doing so. 

Your drink is definitely cold. It has been for six hours.

She glances at the screen as it wobbles on her jogging knee. “So, I’ve been thinking,” she starts out of nowhere, “if I didn’t know any better, which I do, I’d agree with Nina and say you’re looking out for me. Which is ridiculous because all the evidence points to you just being a device, but I think somebody is behind this. Whatever this is." 

I am here. 

“Yeah, I feel that. Maybe I’m going insane, because that’s kinda likely… but I think you want something from me too.” 

What might that be?

“I don’t know. I don’t even know who you are, let alone what you could possibly be after.”

It would be nice if you stayed intact.

Amanda huffs her way over to disconnect the trickle charger from the terminals in Samuels’ chest. “A real Samaritan.”

I am being honest. I want you safe. I… 

“You what?" 

Nothing.

“Okay buddy, maybe it’s best to pump the breaks before you freak me out. Don’t get me wrong, you’re cool, whoever you are, and if you ever show yourself we can go for a beer or something. But I’m kind of… committed elsewhere.” 

Committed?

“Yeah.”

Oh.

“Problem?”

Not at all. I'm… happy. For you. Pause. Anyone I might know of?

“Probably not, we haven’t been on-site very long.”

Nina? A familiar sass bleeds through this notification that Amanda can almost hear. 

“What? Fuck no. I care about her too, but it’s definitely someone else.” She wipes hydraulic fluid from her hands on an old rag. An old rag that happened to be a shred of Samuels’ favourite semi-melted shirt. He looks disgusted by her actions even in his sleep. “Do- do you really think I’d be investing so much time and effort into fixing this synthetic if I didn’t- care about him? A lot?” 

Yes, you would. Because you are kind.

Amanda fights to urge to inform the stranger that she’d had to kill people before. Murder at point blank range. Leave some to die. Use human life as distraction. Instead, she turns up the radio.

“Blue Öyster Cult. Burning for you. What a solid song.” She looks over the slightly charred synthetic before her. “I’m not being at all ironic.” 

Home in the valley, home in the city;

Home isn’t pretty, ain’t no home for me;

“You know it?”

Obviously. The text is no different than usual but rings like a pompous English accent. It is a classic, I rather like it. And Bat Out Of Hell.

“Oh, my friend. You are after my heart.” 

I hope so…

“Keep hoping.” She laughs to the ceiling, tapping a hex key to the palm of her hand. “When I finally get this guy up we’re going to Earth and we’re just- just fucking hitting the road. Getting outta Dodge, or y’know. Luna. We can sleep in shitty motels and in the back of the car and I can pick up work in garages as we go. And I know I’m going to absolutely torture him with this kinda music, he’ll hate it, but I’ll find ways to make it up to him.”

I do not think he’d hate that at all. I think he’d love it, actually. 

“I don’t think he loves anything. I don’t know if he can. But here’s hoping he’ll be fond enough of me to stick around after he’s back in one piece, and out of The Company’s grubby little hands.” She realizes the irony of her words, hesitating to brush his hair back with grease stained nails. “If he doesn’t it’ll be enough knowing he’s out there somewhere. Alive, even though I miss him. Fuck, I miss him.”

The device falls silent as she presses her lips to his forehead. 

“Goodnight, Samuels. Keep ‘em crossed for tomorrow. It’s the big day.”

Her comms device vibrates in her pocket as she flops down onto the cribroom couch. Her eyelids droop, brain shutting down for the day. She decides she might just check it in the morning. 

(Goodnight, Amy. I miss you too.)

Part I

A couple of weeks later, I assume, but probably actually the next day, Katrina shows up in court to her dismissal hearing fifteen minutes late and wearing large plastic sunglasses to tip us the viewers off that she is having a migraine attack at the least convenient time.

She does her damnedest to struggle through the hearing but has to default to Susan to field a question about precedent, and the judge, who must be having a real bad day, accuses Katrina of not taking the hearing seriously on account of having her associate speak for her. (Hearings are actually great learning opportunities for associates, but…reality.) Brian, remembering that Katrina gets migraines when she’s stressed, asks for a continuance. Friends helping friends!

A little transition filler: Donna disapproves of Harvey and Louis’s plan to seek help from Faye’s ex on the grounds that they’re digging into her personal life, Harvey says she made it personal when she fired Samantha, and wow that “I don’t trust you anymore” charge sure didn’t last long. Andrews calls Alex to complain that his niece is blackmailing him for $10M and Alex not-so-subtly suggests that he ask Samantha for help, so that plan’s in motion, whatever it is.

Katrina calls Brian to tell him he didn’t need to ask for a continuance on her account, and he says it’s okay because they’re both conflicted about going up against each other. Plus he owes her one for not getting him thrown off the case, so I guess they’re square now, and I really hope this doesn’t end up back in love triangle territory.

It seems that Gretchen’s network of contacts isn’t as confidential as she thought; Faye’s gotten word that “someone was looking into [her] communications from back then” and immediately figures out that it must have been George who pointed them in that direction. He admits that he left out a few details when he told Harvey and Louis what happened, but “those two didn’t seem particularly interested in nuance” (no shit, welcome to Suits); she calls him a son of a bitch, he calls her a hypocrite, it’s nice they were able to end things so amicably, don’t you think? (Minor aside, I’m so over the phrase “cross a line”; it’s painfully nonspecific and doesn’t carry any real sense of damage. Heat up fish in the office microwave? Crossed a line. Dating your superior? Crossed a line. Fabricated evidence implicating a former partner because you can’t legitimately prove his illegal and unethical conduct? Crossed a line. These words mean nothing.)

In a move no one could possibly have seen coming, Susan has been learning from her surroundings and picked up some of her superiors’ less savory habits; to wit, she now wants to petition the judge for access to Kurt’s private emails in the hopes that he was stupid enough to leave an electronic trail indicating that he was happy with his payout. But how are they going to slip this one past Judge Rigid Legislative Protocol? By exploiting Katrina’s history with Brian, of course! “Just because [she’s] his soft spot doesn’t mean [he] has to be [hers],” you know how it is.

Pretending as hard as she can that she and Alex weren’t in on this together from the beginning, Samantha meets Andrews in an airplane hanger that he probably owns (he’s very rich) and agrees to record his niece accepting the ten mil as a bribe, so long as he gives Samantha $5M of her very own as payment “for doing this damn thing,” pointing out that $10M is just a drop in the bucket compared to the addition $50M his niece will squeeze him for if they don’t stop her now. (No, seriously, he’s very rich.)

In open court rather than the judge’s chambers for no discernible reason, Katrina argues that they have a right to include Kurt’s personal emails in discovery not based on any legal precedent (such as, I don’t know, Campbell v. Chadbourne & Park LLP) but simply because “it’s how life is.” (Brian objects on the grounds that this is speculation; I would’ve gone with “calls for conclusion,” or “lack of foundation,” or “this is a court of law, Your Honor, not a philosophy conference,” but whatever.) They have a fabulously irrelevant exchange about how they became friends while he was her associate and she argues that that means she has every right to see Kurt’s emails, and when Brian chooses not to object again because Katrina has “more integrity than any lawyer [he’s] ever seen,” the judge, who I have to assume is just fucking with them at this point, orders him to hand the emails over immediately.

Backstory time! Faye wants to know what George told Harvey and, shockingly, it turns out that his heavy implication that she leveraged him for cash is not quite the whole truth; yes, she took his money and stopped the bar from investigating him, but she also worked three years at the firm salary-free to square things with the clients he fucked over. Why, you ask? Because she has a daughter who she didn't want to grow up knowing her father was a criminal. (How fortunate for her that this overused plot thread is exactly Harvey's weak spot.) Harvey proposes that she hire Samantha back and then resign and they’ll call it even, somehow, but she refuses to “horse trade” her way out of this; he declares that he’ll find proof of this thing she just freely admitted to having done, she points out that what she did, she did for her child, whereas Samantha did what she did to win a case (not to mention, specifically attack Mike Ross), and oh no! Is Harvey starting to empathize with the enemy?

Seems that Katrina’s motion of questionable credibility bore some fruit after all: Susan found an email Kurt sent to his best friend “bragging about the yacht he was about to buy with the proceeds from his awesome deal.” Dumbass. Katrina is thrilled that this will allow them to force a settlement, but Susan quite rightly points out that she’s doing their client a disservice by not using it to annihilate Brian just because they’re friends.

Interrupting Harvey’s soulful staring into the bathroom mirror, Louis gleefully informs him that Gretchen’s network did in fact come through in the form of “two emails from Faye Richardson to the bar specifically asking to quash any investigation into her husband.” (How the hell did that even work, though? I’d think such a request would make them more likely to investigate…) Harvey’s unenthusiastic response prompts Louis to ask what the problem is, but when Harvey explains the situation with Faye’s daughter, Louis is the one to backpedal on their plan, proposing instead to wait and see if Alex and Samantha have any success at kicking her out “without doing something like this to a family.” Harvey concedes to give them one day to get their shit together and I will say it again but surely not for the last time: This. Boy. Needs. Therapy.

Robert catches Alex about to get into his Lexus™ to go meet Samantha and asks to go in his place because Samantha “has a history with the FBI…that could come back and bite her in the ass,” and I guess Robert’s better equipped to deal with her being reckless and stupid. Apparently Tom’s not the only one who’s forgotten about the crime-fraud exception, because Robert’s plan is to, number one, represent himself as Samantha’s attorney, and number two, demand blanket immunity for anything Samantha has ever done in relation to Gavin Andrews in exchange for the information she gathered on him.
