Warm days are here... so expect π... this Geelong Silver example dates to 1871, an example of local colonial silversmith #EdwardFischer at his absolute best.... it was presented to T.J. Everist, building surveyor for the City Of #Melbourne 1850-72, on occasion of his retirement. What changes he would have seen as the quite frontier township of 1850 exploded into the boom of the #Goldrush after 1851, new suburbs and big construction sites going up every week.... sounds just like Melbourne today! This will be the star piece in our 2018 Exhibition, opening November 18th in our upstairs gallery, Geelong. Animals inorder to protect themselves from animals , they use their smelling odor asna weapon . This is their defensive machanism . Following are the animals who are consider as one of the smelliest animals in the world;
TASMANIAN DEVIL
Tasmanian devil is a carnivourous belongs to family Dasyuridae . Its mostly found in Australia and is now found in the wild only in the island tasmania . They are also known for black fur , smell and extremely high pitched screams . The distinct smell is used to ward of predators , keeping them away with its pungent smell.
WOLVERINE
Wolverine is animals like bear and belongs to weasel family. They are mostly found in Northern Boreal forest and Subarctic . They produce an extremely distinct and unpleasant smell , due to which they are also called as 'Stunk Bear'. They mark their surroundings due to this odor, which they release from anal gland
STINK BUG
Stink bug also known as Brown marmorated stink bug , belongs to Pentatomidae family of insects . They are mostly found in Japan , China , Korea and Taiwan . They produce a pungent odor which is due to trans-2-decend and trans-2-octenal . The smell is like cilantro . The smell is produced from the holes in its abdomen . This defensive machanism is to protect itself from being eaten by birds and lizards.
SKUNK
Mammals belongs to the family Mephituade and other members of weasel family. They can b dangerous because they carry rabies. The are known for their extremely unpleasant smell . The bad smell is because of sulpher such as thiols which are notorious for their nauseating odor . In simple words it smells like rotten eggs.
KING RATSNAKE
King ratesnake also known as 'stinking goddess' because they produce very hard , unpleasant and pungent smell. Its part of their defensive machanism. Kind ratsnake is a huge constrictor that is mostly found in China and Veitnam. They release the pungent smell whenever they feel unsafe and threatened.
EARWIG
Earwig is a nocturnal specie of insects and hides in small moist crevices during day time. They are prey for mammals, amphibians , lizards etc. So inorder to protect themselves they produce a a foul smeeling liquid. They also produce a pheromone (scent) , this is how they cluster together in large numbers.
WOOD HOOPOE
Wood hoopoe are small americans birds , mostly found in South of Sahara desert and doesn't migrate . Wood hoopoe points its tail at threatening animals and excretes a pungent stench . The harsh smell is due to the presence of dimethyl sulphide, which had smell like rotten eggs.
BOMBARDIER BEETLE
Bombardier beetle are ground beetles in the tribe Brachinini , Paussini etc . They are most notable for their defensive machanism . They eject a hot noxious chemical spray from the tip of abdomen with a popping sound , its not just stinky but is also painful. They can be found in all continents except antartica . The predators of these beetles are birds , spiders , skunks , moles etc
STRIPED POLECAT
Striped polecat also known as African polecat, Zoril , Zorille and African skunk . They are members of Mustelidae family . These polecat are legendary for their ability to eject a foul smelling substance from its anal gland for protection. They are also called as 'Foul mart' because of its strong unpleasant smell. The spray serves as a defensive against predators such as domestic dogs.
LESSER ANTREATER
lesser antreater also known as Southern Tamandua. Other names are collared antreater and belongs to specie of antreater from SouthAfrica. It can be found in many habitats. They are exotic animals therefore can't be kept as pet.They are known as one of the most smelliest animal on the earth. There smell is even 4-5 times worst than that of Skunks. They can be smelled at a distance of 50 meter . The bad smell lets other animals known where the tamandua is and usually send them in opposite direction. They release it from the gland at the base of tail.
