Spin by The Covasettes Single Review
5.5/10
Really good indie rock here; Spin makes you want to sing along, belting out the lyrics even if you are crap compared to their lead vocalist, who kills it on this track.

and i don’t wanna die - subhumans! UK punk if you’re into that!
thanks for your consideration! 😋😋
oh fuck yeah! burnin for you is just a little too much to the side of my tastes (but still very cool), but ough i'm loving the frantic energy of i don't wanna die! by sheer coincidence, i've actually been listening to a good bit of UK punk lately hehe

Festival Review: Handmade Festival 2018 - Saturday
Two rather incredible things happened this Bank Holiday weekend; one, the sun actually shone, something unheard of since records began (disclaimer: hmmm – not actually true but you know what the UK is like when it comes to dismal weather over a Bank Holiday). Two, we had the pleasure of sampling Handmade Festival in Leicester – thankfully it’s a festival that champions new acts and doesn’t plug slots with 90s nostalgia and washed up 00’s band that were crap the first time around. Traversing soundscapes from indie-pop to grunge-rock to visceral punk to wonderful noise, Handmade Festival offered up a veritable feast for the ears (plus the food choices were bloody brilliant too), so without further ado this is our roundup of Saturday’s acts that tickled our proverbial pickle…
If you’re a seasoned festival goer, picking the first band you see is vital, catch an act that’s a bit meh’ and you’re starting your weekend of music on the wrong foot; an opening act is just as important as the headliner: Anteros kicked off our Handmade Festival experience with gusto, with the four-piece opening up the Union Square stage with a delightful dollop of indie-pop that’s danceable and undeniably catchy. In Laura Hayden the quartet have a captivating frontperson, as the vocalist commanded the stage as if the foursome were headlining the whole shebang; expect to see the London outfit dominate 2019. Following Anteros’ jangly guitar-pop comes the rough ‘n’ ready Rascalton with a sound that straddles indie’s sense of melody and punk’s untamed aggression; the band rattle through a 30-minute set fuelled by an upfront swagger and a vital dose of agit-punk. She Makes War sprinkles an ample helping of fairy dust across Handmade, as chief protagonist Laura Kidd graced the stage with a lavish smear of blue glitter across her eyes and a sound that switches from expansive pop and alt-rock stormers, plus there’s the briefest appearance of a teal ukulele amongst the grandiose walls of sound.
Speaking of walls of sound, one of the loudest sets of the whole weekend comes courtesy of Crosa Rosa, the grungey trio taking to the o2 Academy’s main stage and in doing so almost take the roof off the entire venue. In a swirl of riffs, massive drums and lots of hair, the Nottingham trio deliver one of the standout sets of the weekend – it’s as if the possessed soul of Nirvana has challenged DZ Deathrays and Pulled Apart By Horses to a psychedelic death match. After colossal set from Crosa Rosa we wanted to take five minutes to soak up the brilliance we’d just witnessed but with so many stellar bands on the bill, there’s no time to muck about and luckily for us we didn’t go for lay down as we’d have missed the superb Indoor Pets. Formerly known as Get Inuit, the plucky indie-punk scamps (think of the geeky wasteland between Weezer and Vampire Weekend) charge through a bevy of infectious tunes that spark off a domino effect of widespread smiles, sing-alongs and jerky dance moves. Wonderfully upbeat and unashamedly fun, the Kent band are built for festivals – no wonder they’ve been asked back to play Handmade year after year.
Midway through Peaness’ sumptuous mid-evening set bassist Jess remarks that it’s a shame Handmade Festival isn’t outside given the freakishly good weather, but this matters not when the Chester based band are pure vitamin D. With a pop sound that’s drenched in summery vocal harmonies and choppy, sun dappled guitar licks – yeah there’s doses of melancholy amongst the trio’s jangly infectiousness but that’s what makes Peaness such an alluring band. Pulling in one of the biggest and most enthusiastic crowds of the weekend, even the band seemed surprised at the scorching welcome that Handmade had in store for them but with such a tongue-in-cheek name and the kind of earworms they produce, there’s no doubting everyone loves Peaness.
Catchy but in an entirely different way Dream Nails come out swinging with a combative performance fuelled by million-mile-an-hour punk with the occasionally smattering of pop. There’s a vitriol that burns deep within the belly of Dream Nails, a group that staunchly champion women’s rights; especially the manifesto of girls to the front at gigs. They’re the sound of the #metoo generation and the dichotomy to the vile misogyny tagged to the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump. God knows right now we need bands like Dream Nails. Low Island’s indie-tronica is a curveball compared to the more riotous bands on offer at Handmade plus their unusually high billing (one band underneath second stage headliners The Big Moon) means they play to a small selection of inquisitive punters and not the full room you’d want. With only 3 EPs under their belts, the Oxford act are still in their infancy but with their rhythmic, organic dance music, it’ll only be a matter of time before they’re following in the footsteps of Foals and (dare we say it) Radiohead.
Taking to the stage like bona-fide headliners, The Big Moon close off the festival’s second stage as if they’re playing a mate’s back garden, as it’s evident the foursome are having an absolute ball as they canter through prime cuts from their debut LP ‘Love in the 4th Dimension’. Sing-alongs are had, beaming smiles are exchanged and there’s even time to squeeze in a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. The knockout trio of ‘Formidable’, ‘Bonfire’ and ‘Sucker’ bring their set and the first day of Handmade to an exhilarating close. We file out of the Union Square stage with our musical appetite well fed, knowing that tomorrow will bring another smorgasbord of noisy delights.

VAN T’S + LUCIA + RASCALTON + SAHARA AT KING TUTS FOR #KTNYR17
Review and photos by Phoebe Holley
Oh what a joy #KTNYR17 has been. An absolutely great festival full of the best acts in Scotland all packed into the best venue in Glasgow. Hats off to Chris Beltran for absolutely nailing, once again, the line-up for this years festival.
The show I had been waiting for though was VAN T's + LUCIA + RASCALTON + SAHARA. I mean COME OOOON, you can't tell me you don't look at that line-up and drool a wee bit!?!
So off I went down to Tuts. LOLOLOL I struggled to get through the f*cking door. I haven't seen Tuts that packed in a very long time and the first band had literally just started. Pretty blooody unheard of.
Sahara at King Tuts
Legit because I couldn't move/waited 63829 hours to even attempt to get a drink, I missed SAHARA (yes that is me you hear crying). I got upstairs just as they finished their last song. BESIDE MASELF. Going to be catching them again soon though, 1382910%.
I decided to find a space in the venue and just not move because no way was I missing another band. So along came RASCALTON..
Rascalton at King Tuts
When a band comes on stage and you feel like they might as well be playing a headline set at the biggest festival in the universe? Ayeeee that is what RASCALTON are all about. Mate, my new favourite Glasgow band. Done and dusted.
The band as a whole are f*cking great, tunes are catchy AF and I can't take my eyes of the frontman cos well he's just a really bloody good frontman y'know.
Crowd were pure into it (lol i'm so glaswegian eh), had no idea what they were chanting but ehhhhh I'm so excited to see what 2017 has instore for Rascalton. Watch out, they're coming for ya!
With the crowd well and truly warmed up it was time for LUCIA to take the stage.
Lucia at King Tuts
Bold as brass there she is, LUCIA accompanied by her band. Problem is I can't bloody see her cos Tuts is so f*cking packed cos everyone wants to see the blonde babe (YEAH ME TOO GUYS F*CKING MOVE OUT MY WAY)
She tears through her set playing some bloody great new tunes and y'know my fave one "Saturday's dead". AHHHH MATE WHAT A TUNE. Thank you for gracing the world with that song LUCIA xoxo
Oh la la la la, get your glitter out guys and gals because it's only bloody time for the VAN T'S!
The Van T’s at King Tuts
The crowd was ready, the VAN T’S were ready BUT I wasn't bloody ready!!!! The excitement took over and I was an absolute hyper mess waiting for them to take the stage.
They came on stage to a ROAR from an absolutely packed King Tuts and my god did they steal the show. The whole thing was perfection. I'm telling you now, see the VAN T’S whilst you can because soon they will be touring with the best in the business and then I'm pretty sure they will be selling out the Hydro themselves.
Get yer glitter on and have wee a boogie. That's the VAN T’S motto.
Phoebs x
