No no, I need to talk about it.

I will travel next year (maybe, idk something bad can always happen). And I had that nightmare where I just wake up in the airport and I am in the united states, but my destination was Chile. No visa, no documents justifying why I am in the earth's purgatory (USA). They open my suitcase and there's a fucking gun there. But the gun it's not fucking mine!!! And I am kinda freaking out, them I have to pay 50 thousand dollars as penalty for traveling with the gun unprotected in my suitcase. They tell me to sign a paper proving that I know I am a criminal or something, and I just woke up really anxious.

Now I not sure if I want to travel anymore...

tbh the best way that i explain to other people what it feels like to live with an anxiety disorder is the one time when i had to get a fingerprint and background check done for a job and i, someone who has never received so much as a speeding ticket my whole life, spent thirty minutes panicking that i would fail because i might secretly be a criminal and have no idea

Could you tell me the meaning of xanthus/xanthos in the context of hair? When I researched this, I saw many different answers. Some said it referred to any light hair, and therefore the meaning was something like fair-haired. Others said it referred to shades of blonde, red and chestnut. I also saw those who said it referred only to blonde, without referring to shades of red or chestnut. When it comes to ancient texts, the meaning of xanthus seems to be generally accepted as some shade of blond, redhead or chestnut while I've personally seen many Greeks online claim that xanthus is specifically blond (that is, no red or chestnut). I don't know if this is because there was some translation problem or if it's because the meaning of xanthus has changed over the years as is normal for some words in certain languages ​​(for example, "rapariga" was originally meant to designate a girl, but now in Brazil "rapariga" is a sexually offensive term. It's the same word, but in Brazil it means different things at different times. And if one were to read a Brazilian text from the period when "rapariga" was still just a girl, then that would be the meaning considered regardless of what it means now). Could it be that in the past the meaning was broader and now the meaning is just blond?

Also: interestingly, although Ξάνθος often causes debate, when I looked up the word ξανθοκόμης (ξανθός + κόμης / κόμᾱς) there seemed to be a consensus that it's actually yellow-haired/blond. I was really intrigued why one is so debated and the other is not if, from what I understand, the eitmology of the second uses the first. I really feel like there's some context I'm not understanding because I don't know Greek.

Context: I'm analyzing character descriptions and I thought it would be interesting to do this by comparing different translations and also looking at the texts in the original (i.e., Greek and Latin). But I don't know either Greek or Latin, so I'm resorting to online lexicon sites, available dictionaries, and academic articles that address the word. With most of the words I get an idea, but xanthus seems to be a really confusing point because people keeps disagreeing (e.g. descriptions of body, eyes and even texture of hair generally seem less uncertain).

I believe the reasons there are various opinions regarding the meaning of ξανθός (xanthós, not xanthus) are a) the fact that ancient Greeks described colours more in terms of quality than in terms of precise hues and b) that the etymology of xanthos is unclear and it might have an unknown pre-Greek origin, so the meaning of the root is obscure to us.

The most popular interpretation is that it generally meant “light-coloured” which included anything from very light brown / dark blonde to the rare occurrence of a more ginger / strawberry blonde colour. In general, a person noticeably lighter than most. For Greeks, the people who were noticeably lighter than most were 90% of the time dark or medium blondes and only a minority would be light blondes or redheads, so you might as well say they used the word most of the time for anything that ranged from light / warm brown to medium / golden blonde.

Because the etymology of the word is not clear and because the word is used a little more flexibly than in English (for example, even in Modern Greek you can say “blonde beach” to signify a beach with golden sand), it was also not clear whether it referred resolutely to the haircolour or it could also describe a lighter skintone or light eyes. That’s why people are more certain for ξανθοκόμης because κόμη means hair, so it means light colour + hair and everyone interprets this as “blonde haired”.

A little later in time, perhaps at classical times onwards, there was another word which described redheads and strawberry blondes more precisely: πυρρόθριξ (pyrrothrix) which means fiery strand of hair. This could leave room to ξανθός to evolve into having a more specific meaning, covering the blonde hues only.

Nowadays, the word has a more specific meaning indeed. It only means blonde (any shade / hue) which is why Greeks on the Internet mostly answer it’s just blonde. Again, technically even in ancient times it was overwhelmingly used for blondes but occasionally it could be used for the rare redheads as well.

Here we should also stress that the perception of blonde varies from nation to nation and even within the nation. My dad tends to call light brown haired people blondes, which makes me mad every time, but I suppose that’s very Ancient Greek of him. Also, even my perception of blonde would not be the same with that of a Scandinavian person.

Now not saying there are not lighter or redder Greeks, of course there are, but if we’re talking about Greek ancestry from both parents, then don’t expect Ancient or Modern Greeks meant something like that

By the way I didn’t find pictures of famous people but I think it’s slightly more probable to find a strawberry blonde or some red tones in brunette and blonde Greek people than find Greeks with the Scandinavian type of blonde, the grey / silver or white blonde. Having said that my teacher had cold grey blonde hair 🤷🏻‍♀️
