Ohhhh, this is a really interesting start! I'm always on board for a super angsty Ransom, so I'm excited about this! Linda is, as always so awful. I'm curious to see how this mysterious Alpha handles it...

An Unconventional Pack Part 1

Of the packs I've written so far for my It Takes All Packs to Make It Work series, this one was the absolute hardest, most gut-wrenching one to write. We definitely have two sadder pups in this story compared to what's been seen before.

But, I still hope those who find enjoy this series will still like this story and what it has to offer to the series as a whole.

Relationship: Alpha!Reader / Beta!Ransom Drysdale / Beta!Nick Vaughn

Word Count: ~1650

Summary: Ransom's never been all that lucky in finding a pack unlike his best friend, Angel. He does find some promise with one Alpha though, but even that becomes complicated when he realizes that her hidden other isn't an omega but another beta.

Warnings: abusive parent (Linda), implied past abuse, Ransom Drysdale (sad boy, soft, protective), Nick is a sweetheart, fiercely protective best friend!Angel, angst with happy ending, hurt/comfort

A/N: This story was one of the hardest I've had to write so far in this series, and I'm still not sure I'm satisfied with it. Ransom is absolutely a lot softer than I originally intended, but he's what the story ultimately intended. I do heartily recommend reading Their Sweet Omega first because it'll give you more insight into Ransom's characterization for this story. Either way, I do hope you'll enjoy this angst-ridden but happy ending story.

The gala event was as insufferable as Ransom knew it would be.

Yet, he couldn’t leave even if he wanted to.

No, his mother had seen to that after he’d reluctantly come back to them, asking for some help with his finances for the month. All his careful planning had gone awry because he hadn’t been able to let down his only true friend in the world.

Said friend hadn’t hesitated in accepting his invitation to accompany him.

Her presence helped to break the monotony and grating snobbery of those his mother continued to push upon him.

Well, that and the memories of the recent dinner he’d had with the first Alpha to ever capture his full attention. It was quite surprising to him how much he hadn’t wanted their evening to end.

Sure, it’d been some shock to discover the claim mark at the base of her neck, but he assumed the bite came from an omega she wanted to keep safe until she was certain of him. He’d seen it plenty of times, and surprisingly, he didn’t even mind. If this Alpha’s omega was anything like her, then he could perhaps find himself content to be claimed.

“You’re doing it again,” Angel teased as she picked a few things from the overloaded table of finger foods. “I know it can’t be because of these people, so what’s got you smiling? Not that I mind. It’s nice to see you like this.”

Schooling his features into a scowl, he spared her a glance before turning his attention to the food.

“No idea what you’re suggesting,” he murmured. Though, try as he might, he couldn’t quite keep his thoughts from straying once more to the Alpha.

If he didn’t know better, he might’ve said he was smitten with her, but that couldn’t be true. Thrombeys and Drysdales don’t do smitten. Don’t do anything resembling love.

“Fine. Keep your secrets.”

The look Angel shot him told him she’d return to the subject soon enough.

Hoping to change the subject, he asked instead, “So, what are your alpha and beta doing tonight while you’re here?”

“They went on a date.” She smiled. “It’s been a while since they’ve gone out together without me, so this was a nice excuse to let them have some time alone together.”

“And you’re not jealous or worried they’re leaving you out?”

Angel shook her head. “No, I’m not. I mean, it took us a bit to figure it out, but our pack works because we love and trust one another. Is there some reason you think I should feel jealous or worried?”

Ransom quickly shook his head.

He’d seen the way Jake and Steve acted around Angel and knew without doubt that his question had no bearing. But he couldn’t tell her why the question had come out of him. He didn’t want to reveal what he knew about this new Alpha in his life just yet, especially since it doesn’t really bother him.

Okay, maybe he was a little worried about it.

He had every right to be a little worried, especially given his history.

It didn’t stop the happier thoughts from peeking through, from giving him a glimpse of what could be.

Damned hope.

“Ran?” Angel asked, breaking through his thoughts.

He shook himself. “I’m fine. It’s fine.”

“You’re lying,” she countered but didn’t press further, much to his relief.

The two of them had fallen into their easy camaraderie when another beta stepped up to the serving table.

Ransom didn’t mean to notice him, but he couldn’t help doing so.

Something about the beta had him immediately at ease in ways he’s never experienced before. Almost without realizing it, Ransom found himself leaning towards the beta which Angel noticed with increasing interest.

She held out her hand and introduced herself to the beta.

The beta grinned softly at her. “Nick.”  

“You’re the trumpet player, right?”

At his nod, she added, “You’re very good.”

“Thank you.”

While Angel and Nick chatted more, Ransom took the opportunity to study the other beta. He still couldn’t figure out what was drawing him to the other man, and he couldn’t shake the notion he knew Nick from somewhere.

Thankfully, he didn’t have to wait long as Nick turned to him. “I never got to thank you that day on the train platform. You really saved me.”

Everything clicked then.

The day came back to him as though it’d been yesterday versus weeks ago.

A group of young alphas had been up to mischief as they waited on the train platform. Ransom had only been there because of his family. He hadn’t really meant to get involved, but the group seemed easy enough to scare away from the hapless trumpeter sitting on the platform and previously minding his business.

Then like now, Ransom couldn’t figure out why he was drawn to the other beta, yet that inexplicable line pulled him toward Nick and had him intervene when he would’ve minded his own business usually.

Lost in his thoughts, he almost missed Nick recounting that day’s events for Angel’s benefit.

“It wasn’t anything worth mentioning,” he said when she gave him a look. As if to emphasize his words and keep her from saying more, he shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe you’ve rubbed off on me or something. It was an odd day for me.”

That didn’t deter Nick to Ransom’s surprise as Nick’s grin graced him. “Whatever it was, you did me a great favor. I can only hope to return it one day.”

When Ransom would’ve responded, Angel grabbed his arm and nodded behind him. Her voice came out a whisper. “Witch incoming.”

“Ransom Drysdale,” Linda managed to both hiss and screech at him, “could you be any more of a disappointment?”

Ransom’s jaw ticked, but he faced his mother with the practiced nonchalance he’d cultivated from years of living with his family. “I’m sure I could, Linda. Perhaps I should try harder.”

As usual, she ignored his comment in favor of continuing her tirade, “It’s bad enough that you brought this mangy omega tonight. Now I find you talking to the help when you’re supposed to be shmoozing potential donors. I swear if you don’t straighten up, you can repay the money you borrowed from us right here, right now.”

His jaw hurt from how he clenched them ever tighter during Linda’s tirade.

“You borrowed money from them?” Angel asked, turning him to face her instead of Linda. “Why, Ran?”

Again, his mother answered before he could even open his mouth. She even had the temerity to crow about it. “For you, you little charity case. Told us some sob story about needing the money to save your birthday or some such nonsense. Should’ve listened to your father all those years ago about you and that bitch mother of yours. Nothing but two-bit omega trash. Always have been, always will be.”

The rigidity of Angel’s body told Ransom she was preparing to launch herself at Linda.

Quickly, he wrapped an arm around Angel’s waist and held tight. A shake of his head had her blowing out her breath even as her scent grew thick with her displeasure.

As much as Ransom wanted to see Angel kick Linda’s ass, he also knew that his mother would press charges against Angel, delighting in finally taking down one of her main nemeses.

After all, it was Angel who’d told Ransom from their earliest days that he could do so much better than the Thrombeys and Drysdales. Hell, she made sure he had plenty of exposure to what a decent family should be like with her grandmother and mother. Both had done what they could to make up for what Ransom lacked in his home life.

“How much?” Nick interrupted Linda’s tirade.

Linda stalled at that.

Her thwarted ire had nowhere to go while Nick waited patiently, munching on one of the finger sandwiches he picked up. His casualness despite Linda’s obnoxious and deprecating outburst had Ransom wondering about this beta and his self-assuredness.

It was Ransom who answered Nick. “About three thousand.”

“That’s it?” Nick’s brows rose at hearing the paltry amount. “Hm. Well, how about I write you a check, lady, and we’ll all go our separate ways? I mean, nothing’s happened yet that we can’t just move on from.”

Linda guffawed. “You? You have three thousand?”

Nick nodded, finishing off his sandwich and picking up a carrot stick.

Ransom, unsure what was happening yet kinda interested in seeing this play out, kept his mouth shut.

“You don’t look like you have five dollars to your name, let alone three thousand.” Linda’s haughty manner increased as she completed a deeper inspection of Nick’s person. Her grin grew downright cruel, something Ransom knew meant trouble for its recipient.

“Linda, don’t,” Ransom growled.

His mother didn’t listen. Instead, she spared him a glance and one of her signature scoffs. With a single step, she closed the distance between them, which wasn’t much, and poked Nick in the chest.

“My son must really be losing his touch if he’s trying to manipulate a nothing beta like you.”

“The only nothing around here is you,” Angel said.

Ransom never got the chance to stop her.

The words had an instantaneous effect.

Linda didn’t even move from where she stood toe-to-toe with Nick when she struck Angel across the face. The sharp edges of her ring broke Angel’s cheek, producing a thin but marked line.

Seeing red, Ransom hauled his mother away from both Nick and Angel.

What had been a quiet squabble to one side of the venue became a full-blown spectacle in moments.

Linda, ever able to manipulate the situation, merely grinned at Ransom. “You’ve really blown it this time. There’s no coming back from this.”

Nothing could’ve prepared Ransom for the familiar voice that spoke up then.

“I do believe the only one who’s blown it is you, Linda Drysdale,” Alpha said from the small but growing crowd.

Summer Wedding Part 5

Angsty (a lot... it's me after all) fluffy 18+just in case.

The next morning she woke up and she felt so much lighter even if she didn't know where she was for a moment last night slowly came back to her but in reverse with Nick even helping her put sheets he loaned her on the bed of the fully furnished appartment. It was early afternoon and Nick had kept his door, which just happened to be across the way, opened.

Earlier he had gotten her a donut for breakfast just as a pick me up and was a little worried it was still sitting there; especially after learning how possessive Ari had been and how he made her feel.

He was teaching an older student, a retiree who always wanted to learn and now had time. Nick who keep one eye on the open door, well her door was her reaction to the treat. Her eyes opened a little. Her eyebrows raised slightly and then a sigh, he thinks, followed by a smile. She knocked on the door.

"Sorry to interrupt. But, thanks Nick"

"For what? Its not a big deal," He laughs it off. With a blush. "I figured you could-use a pick me up."

"I um " she chuckled nervously and her breath picked up hoping plans were still on the table for her to move in rent free for a bit. " I don't have a key and I have to run out I don't wanna I mean I don't-"

"Right I'll up make up a key for you later. We always change the locks after each person. Moves in case they ya know. I'll be here all day though so you're good."

Her shoulders drop in relief as a smile crossed her face.

"Thanks for everything Nick" I'll I'm sorry for interrupting." She smiles and then leaves. Once the building door is heard breaking the silence while the retiree was taking a drink of water.

"Chinese." The retiree says

"What?"

"Chinese and a movie night you can't go wrong with that."

"I don't know what you mean." Nick blushes

"I'm sure you don't. She's a pretty girl. And you never gave me food when I moved in."

Nick didn't know what to say.

"She won't say no I guarantee it."

She knew she would be out by now and out late today based on the schedule she had been given a week ago and if he was by some evil curse there he'd be sleeping. He was the same during certain types of "projects" . She was relaxed walking in.

Then she saw Ari sitting on the floor she watched as he ran his hands through his hair and then stood up oblivious to her, she was watching the scene completely confused. His head hanging low.

"Ari. You're here. And awake I thought you'd be-"

He had jumped up the moment he heard her voice call his name.

"I've been worried sick," he wrapped his arms around her with his head on top of hers. Hes only a few inches taller at 6'1 vs her 5'8 but he still did it "about you. You've been gone the whole night. I."

He let go to look at her all over make sure she wasn't hurt.

"I stayed at a friends." She shrugged away from him and he all to easily let her slip from his grip, "And I found a place I'm  moving in this weekend."

"What?" His heart hit the floor.

"Yea so you can have your bed back soon."

"Wa I mean I well this I-" for the first time Ari didn't  know what to say or how to handle the situation.  His entire life he's been able to just fly by the seat of his pants

Nick had kept his promise and that weekend he helped her move out. Nick had made sure Ari wasn't in a room alone with her and Nick had placed himself between her and Ari at all times.

She was so much happier since she was living alone. Truthfully so was nick...especially since she agreed to have dinner with him... more than once. He doesn't remember the last time he had laughed so much, even smiled so much and when she had smiled he did then too. There was such a light in her that Nick saw that first morning and he wasn't going to let Ari do anything.

The whole time Ari was watching it was the worst horror movie Ari has ever seen. The worst situation Ari has ever been in. Thr amount of internal bleeding Ari was dealing with was insurmountable. For the first time in Ari's grown up life he had no plan. No words. He was helpless. She wouldnt let him help in fact she tried her best to ignore Ari's presence. Ari left lifeless.

"Ari I, Im sorry I- no you know what I'm not sorry. You made me feel like shit like crap. I thought I was shit. And um. I deserve someone who won't do that to me. Make me feel like that."

Meeting Nick reminded her but she wasn't going to say anything. "Ari won't be in my life any more. In fact He isn't." She told herself. But she wasn't heartless she couldn't be after everything. There were good moments after all.

"You're an amazing father to Maya but that doesn't mean an you're  a good man...for me.tell her I'll always be here for her.

She sees Nick behind him on a door way nodding in encouragement. She told him how she was nervous about the conversation she knew would happen and Nick had simply assured her that she was right and he'd be there to help if Ari wasn't agreeing. Nick knew she was strong enough someone just had to remind her.

"The argument you never appologized. But I did and that told me everything. You can't say the words I'm sorry-"

"I am I am so so sorry."

"Ari just stop. It's  too late."

She pushed past him proud that the single tear that tightroped acorss her eyeline never fell over. That said more than words ever could.

(I know Ari ran his hand down his beard then was rubbing his beard trying to stratagize to find a strategy. But I need to put it behind me.)

"You ok?" Nick curiously asked hoping her answer would remind herself of her strength. Nick somehow never realized what a great guy he is but she did.

"Yea . In fact I'm great."

"Good. Now what do you think of ttyin the amazing fantastic Ray's for dinner?"

"Didn't we have that last night?"

"No we had the amazing fabulous Rays."

"Oh god."

"And they are all on facing street corners," he wispered for some reason but it made her laugh.

They were done but Nick realized heft his phone and went back in.

"Hey," Ari grabbed his arm as he was walking out, surprising Nick who didn't miss a a beat changing his posture to match the lion one Ari has naturally.

"She trusts you."

"And I trust her."

"You better take good care of her."

Nick was taken back she didnt need anyone to 'take care of her,' what she did need was a friend right now. And nick would wait forever for her.

"Comming from you that's real rich. We're not dating but," Nick looked out the window to see her smiling along with the radio, and he couldn't help but smile

"She means the world to me."

"She deserves it."

"Yea she does." Nick's venom pierced Ari like a snake bite as Nick was sure to make a point to drive it home to hurt Ari.

He got into the car and they went off to move her away leaving Ari alone. It wasn't that he was a lone, it was that he lost her. He always had her to come home to and he loves that and cherished that until he let a bad day become a bad week and took it out on her he had no one to blame but himself.

He walked to Maya's room and he picked up her Gloworm. The one maya insisted on using... for this... He opened the velcro and moved the battery aside, he took out and a small box. He doesn't know why he was torturing himself by doing this but as he opened up the box a small peice of paper came out, he unfolded it, it was something Maya wrote herself. She was so excited and happy when Ari talked to Maya about what he wanted. He felt a horrible so horrible.. worse than scum shit crap. as he just didn't ruin things for himself but for Maya. Then he read the paper it had one sentance written in pink crayone was the words:

"PLEASE marry my Daddy."

And Ari cried again.

Halloween Headcanons - various cevans characters

a/n - hey lovely people!! happy halloween:)) i hope you enjoy this cute little headcanon!! also, tumblr just wouldn’t let me put more than one gif for some reason... hate it here🤪 anyways, enjoy<3

Steve Rogers:

making him use his artistic skills to carve out some beautiful pumpkins

steve’s probably going to want to spend his halloween in a pretty low key way, preferebly cuddling at home with you watching a spooky movie

but

he’ll definitely let you convince him to answer the door for the kids who are trick or treating with his shield and cowel

they’re all very excited to get candy from captain america

(also, it depends on the movie, but sometimes he’ll get a little scared at night and bashfully ask you to be the big spoon, but don’t tell him i said that)

Ransom Drysdale:

but it’s basically his favorite time of year, and we all know it

will grumble about it to death but eventually go with you to some party. he likes halloween, but not that much, so he’d probably make you go home pretty soon, but don’t worry, he makes it up to you;)

also i would like to talk about the fact that ransom drysdale is a whore for the fall aesthetic and definitely takes you to a pumpkin patch and his eyes light up when you suggest hanging fairy lights in the house and makes you order a pumpkin spice latte for him so he won’t lose his “image”

Andy Barber:

Dad Mode Activated

gets a ton of candy to give trick or treating children

probably has some sort of office party you’re both going to 

he won’t put any effort into his costume, since he thinks he’s too old for it, so maybe he’ll let you wrangle him into a bow or a hat

you teased him about getting a couple’s costume, but it’s a hard no for him. he loves you, but he’ll only go so far in front of his coworkers

it doesn’t matter, because when you’re in the tight leather of some superhero or another, accentuating your curves, he regrets not giving it, because maybe then he could’ve convinced you to go for something a little less... distracting

Jake Jensen:

this man absolutely goes all out with his costume, and yours because you know you two are dressing up together

with his tech-savvy ways, i’m sure he could devise some really complicated, intricate and probably light-up costumes

but you quickly talk him out of it in favor of something simpler, probably still a nerdy reference though:)

loves to give out candy to trick-or-treating kids and gets so heartwarmingly excited with them about their costumes

he once heard a kid say his candy was the best, and he still brags about it

“we need to get more chocolates! i have a reputation to uphold!”

Colin Shea:

mansplain malewife manwhore

likes the parties

likes the girl’s costumes at parties, especially yours, the sexier the better

but he’s not one for double standards, so expect his costume to be just as revealing, probably even more, than most of the girls at the party

definitely goes shirtless, maybe also really tight leather pants because he’s extra and likes the attention it gets him

but don’t worry, at the end of the day, he only has eyes for you. he’ll make sure he’s the only one to see you out of the costume;)

Me (Playing It Cool):

probably goes as some book character with a low effort costume

but he’ll let you put some eyeliner on him since you insist it brings out his eyes

(it does. he looks great and you nake sure he knows that. you’re late to your party.)

you’d probably spend a lowkey halloween with some of yours and his friends, drinking beers and catching up

he would definitely NOT be the type to leave candy for children though

“but why would we waste our candy on them? it’ll hurt their teeth! we could just save them the pain and eat it ourselves!”

Ari Levinson:

i feel like similarilly to steve, ari would be more of a fan of the calmer aspects of fall then halloween parties

he’d take you on walks through forests colored with rich autumn colors, leaves crunching beneath your feet

he’ll let you cuddle up to him as it gets colder, even though he complains about it

“how are your feet in socks and i still feel they’re cold?!”

he’ll eat up every autumn thing you cook too, praising you culinary skills and moaning appreciatively at every pumpkin pie and delicious soup

mostly just loves slowing down a bit this time of year, but he’ll accompany you to a halloween party if you want it, because he can never tell you no<3

Frank Adler:

mary loves halloween, so by default frank loves halloween

he likes how excited she gets, and you’re right there with her, decorating the entire house with spooky decorations, carving out pumpkins, and watching spooky movies (kid appropriate, obviously. even though mary’s mature for her age, she doesn’t need to get that scared)

you manage to put a litte eye patch on fred so he goes as a pirate

mary wants to go as the tinkerbell to fred’s captain hook, or well, captain eye, and wants you and frank to go as wendy and peter pan

suffice it to say it takes a LOT of convincing, but you manage to get the grumpmaster, as mary affectionately calls her uncle, to put on a green shirt and a little hat

you and mary eat so much candy it takes her hours to come down from the sugar rush, and frank finds himself laughing at the two of you being hyperactive together more times than he can count

Nick Vaughn: 

will people watch with you and you make a competition out of it

you’ll even have categories like shittiest costume (a unicorn bow and normal clothes), best costume (a couple who came as scary witches, complete with makeup and nails), cheesiest costume (a sexy cat) 

you two had a shared costume, but it was something more lowkey, neither of you having the time or the want to be the center of attention

also, nick knows his teas, fight me

he’ll make you a cup of the hot beverage every time you felt like it and every time he felt like you could use one, which was a lot

and he’d bring it to you in a mug that says “par-TEA animal” because he’s a nerd and it’s his favorite one

Johnny Storm:

will throw a huge party🙄

that’s typical, everyone expects it, and to be fair he’s a great host

what you don’t expect is when he arranges for candy to be delivered to a youth center

or when you come back one home one day and he’s got a dog apperantly?? and he’s dressed up in the cutest little pumpkin costume??

(obviously you two keep the dog. johnny names him kitten and thinks it’s hilarious)

johnny’s full of surprises, and honestly? you wouldn’t want it any other way<3
