HYPERDOLPHIN (ハイパードルフィン)

I realize that I haven't mentioned this very important band in Ite! that is central to Rankou's storyline so I should probably talk about it :>

Formed in his first year, HYPERDOLPHIN is pretty much just your run-of-the-mill high school band. The members are as follows:

Yamamoto Rankou (山本卵黄):

Leader / Bassist

Responsible for a lot of the planning and other management-related things for the band

Terrible at singing

Egg Yolk Jelly / Samukurage / Phacellophora camtschatica

[Last name pending] Kiseki (きせき):

Vocalist / Rhythm Guitarist

One of the founding members

A bit of a renaissance jelly when it comes to music

Cauliflower Jelly / Ibokurage / Cephea cephea

Nakachi Helios (中地ヘリオス):

Drummer

Ends up mooching snacks and spare change off of other members

Has Phasmophobia

Mediterranean Jellyfish / Chichoukai Ibokurage / Cotylorhiza tuberculata

Nozaki Yuune (野崎幽音):

Lead Guitarist

Exceptionally gifted at guitar

Pretty quiet and shy, has a habit of accidentally sneaking up on people

Ghost Jellyfish / Yuureikurage / Cyanea nozakii

For years I would look at posts and questionnaires about neurodivergence that takes about being so focused on something that you forgot to eat and be like, "Couldn't be me. Being hungry is so uncomfortable! Your stomach is growling and cramping? How do you ignore that?"

Then someone informed me that neurotypical people have a whole bunch of "hungry" sensations before they get to that point.....

sigh,,, it is 🥺

It’s fried egg, fried egg, gotta get down on fried eggs—but only if you’re a sea turtle or an ocean sunfish! This gelatinous sunny-side-up critter is the egg yolk jelly (Phacellophora camtschatica). If you scramble out to Monterey Bay, you may catch a glimpse of these eggsellent drifters floating in the waves.

#taking a quick break from homework to doodle this out lol #it baffles me how the p. camtschatica can look so different from picture to picture #sometimes it looks like chrysaora species (sea nettles) and sometimes it looks more like cyanea species (like the lion's mane jelly)#it's baffling #I think it was put in the cyanea genus for awhile too but i can't remember lol #mun rambles #ite! it's jellyfish love!#rankou yamamoto #my art #my brain is fried I should probably do something to unfry it lol #like an egg!!#that is also a crab by the way I need to remember to draw him with more crabs

School is just around the corner, but I... sort of want to make a post explaining the differences between commonly misidentified jellyfish.

While their Japanese names is a lot simpler to differentiate- but the English names are more misleading. And it makes me sad.

But um!! This is a teachable moment- and one that the Ite! characters would be perfect for using :). I’ve actually got two possibilities up rn ^-^.

First idea: The “Crown” Jellyfish, with the Cephea cephea and Atolla sp. I’d be using Kiseki and Masaru to demonstrate the differences :)

Second idea: The “Fried Egg” Jellyfish, with the Phacellophora sp. and Cotylorhiza tuberculata I’d be using Rankou and Helios to demonstrate the differences :)
