As a certified Nezhead I think the Monkees fandom collectively needs to talk about Micky more. “Nez goat stream Different Drum” “so Torkcore” “Davy Jones tboy swag” what about Circus Boy. What about the guy who just put out an REM cover EP for some reason. What about our king Micky Dolenz.
#maybe i’m wrong i guess i haven’t ventured that far into the fandom#but micky rules. i think if he’s your favorite monkee you’re objectively right#randy scouse git goes hard forever idc. why don’t you hate who i hate kill who i kill to be free.#the monkees#relapsing. sorry#ALSO his version of shiny happy people rules unironically and makes me imagine a better timeline where it was a monkees song instead

Saw a post about picking one monkees song to rule them all, and it got me thinking: I think Randy Scouse Git (Alternate Title for you Brits) fundamentally changed me as a person. Here was my favorite band, full of bouncy, happy (at least sounding) songs, going hard. The chorus filled with anger, but the verses with the sweet monkees sound, a contrast like I had never heard before. And it compelled me, excited me. And the politics that anger spewed, those of previous generations trying to get the new one to conform to their standard, and the inherit satire of it in the song, spoke to me as well, a girl in the midst of a tumultuous time in my life where I was questioning everything I knew. I left my faith, realized I was queer, and started seeing my friendships I was convinced saved my life falling apart around me no matter how hard I tried to keep them together.
As my depression worsened and I fell to the lowest point in my life I got into another band, Nirvana, who I felt mirrored the pain i felt inside perfectly and therefore was a great outlet for me. But once again, I was compelled by the soft verses and hard choruses. Only looking back can I draw the comparison to my favorite Monkees song, which followed the same formula but with a more whimsical feel. So yeah Randy Scouse Git opened my eyes to the possibility of grunge and allowed me to love the sound even more i feel. Thank you Micky Dolenz for such a wonderful song.
Sorry for the long rambling I will get back to reblogging fandom posts promptly

Good God I am loosing it.
(A performance of Randy Scouse Git on the 17th of November, 2012 in Cleveland Ohio (X) | The Randy Scouse Git video back when the song was made.)
That 2012 live performance really makes me feel, like, all of the emotions. And it's so good too. I was reading an article that mentioned this performance and linked some photo gallerys that didn't work anymore, and I was about to start crying until I found this recording. Everyone say thank you to random live performance recorders on youtube!!
But yeah anyway I'm so normal about tablecloth poncho I promise. (The words of a liar.)
#actual post#the monkees#micky dolenz#favorite#truly the best#tagging it that even though it's my own post because holy cow that performance.... I gotta find this post again some way damn it

if you had to pick one Monkees song to rule them all which one would you pick ?
Some of those songs are so formative for me... that's hard. Take A Giant Step, Let's Dance On, She, Randy Scouse Git, Mary Mary, Stepping Stone, Zilch, I'm A Believer. All loom very large in my mind.
The Adam Schlesinger project delivered a great track (written by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie) called Me and Magdalena that is just fantastic. Didn't get so much notice when the album came out but now seems to be recognized as super-good.

Micky Dolenz (1945-) The Monkees - vocals and drums Songs: "I'm a Believer," "Randy Scouse Git" Defeated Opponents: Lee Hazlewood Propaganda: none
Paul McCartney (1942-) The Beatles - bass guitar and vocals; Wings - bass guitar and vocals; solo Songs: "Hey Jude," "Jet" Defeated Opponents: Peter Tork Propaganda: "Just look at Beatles era Paul and tell me you're not swooning. Actually swooning. I hope you have a fainting couch nearby." "He was referred to as the pretty beatle for a reason" "he's going to get obliterated immediately because Tumblr hates Beatles fans, and they're right to. with that said. *with that said.* Paul IS worth the hype, when you get past all the big loud treatises white men like to write about him. when you dig back to the actual music, the actual vids, the actual guy. he was beautiful, he was rare, but he was also real. watching him in get back just solidified him to me as the Most Normal Guy Ever. he loved being in a band and it shows for every second of the 60s."
