In the studio during the Headquarters sessions, 1967. Photos: Michael Ochs Archives.
“I remember when Micky first showed me that song [‘Randy Scouse Git’]. He played me the verse and the chorus, and then he said, ‘In the end we do them both at the same time!’ I thought that was a brilliant piece of music. I’ve always thought that Micky was far more creative than he ever gave himself credit for. He’s a vastly more talented individual than he’s aware of. I always thought that song was proof of it.” - Peter Tork, Headquarters, 1995 liner notes
“Bert [Schneider] and Bob [Rafelson] trusted us. They never came to the studio. I don’t know what RCA thought of us. We covered the control room window with poster paint so you couldn’t see out. We went back the day after the session finished and they’d already scraped it off, slavering to get every trace of us out of there. The Monkees in the studio were a garage band, our music was absolutely conventionally garage band, four guys just thrashing away. ‘Alternate Title’ was the only song released from Headquarters. Mike said some of the higher-ups [in the record company] were so annoyed at us snot-nosed kids they blocked any singles in the States. I’d love to have known what would have happened if they released ‘Randy Scouse Git’ in the States.” - Peter Tork, Uncut, July 2011

As a certified Nezhead I think the Monkees fandom collectively needs to talk about Micky more. “Nez goat stream Different Drum” “so Torkcore” “Davy Jones tboy swag” what about Circus Boy. What about the guy who just put out an REM cover EP for some reason. What about our king Micky Dolenz.
#maybe i’m wrong i guess i haven’t ventured that far into the fandom#but micky rules. i think if he’s your favorite monkee you’re objectively right#randy scouse git goes hard forever idc. why don’t you hate who i hate kill who i kill to be free.#the monkees#relapsing. sorry#ALSO his version of shiny happy people rules unironically and makes me imagine a better timeline where it was a monkees song instead

Saw a post about picking one monkees song to rule them all, and it got me thinking: I think Randy Scouse Git (Alternate Title for you Brits) fundamentally changed me as a person. Here was my favorite band, full of bouncy, happy (at least sounding) songs, going hard. The chorus filled with anger, but the verses with the sweet monkees sound, a contrast like I had never heard before. And it compelled me, excited me. And the politics that anger spewed, those of previous generations trying to get the new one to conform to their standard, and the inherit satire of it in the song, spoke to me as well, a girl in the midst of a tumultuous time in my life where I was questioning everything I knew. I left my faith, realized I was queer, and started seeing my friendships I was convinced saved my life falling apart around me no matter how hard I tried to keep them together.
As my depression worsened and I fell to the lowest point in my life I got into another band, Nirvana, who I felt mirrored the pain i felt inside perfectly and therefore was a great outlet for me. But once again, I was compelled by the soft verses and hard choruses. Only looking back can I draw the comparison to my favorite Monkees song, which followed the same formula but with a more whimsical feel. So yeah Randy Scouse Git opened my eyes to the possibility of grunge and allowed me to love the sound even more i feel. Thank you Micky Dolenz for such a wonderful song.
Sorry for the long rambling I will get back to reblogging fandom posts promptly
