James Wiseman’s departure from college and NCAA eligibility, explained
James Wiseman is at the center of the NCAA’s biggest controversy.
Memphis has lost its star center after initially fighting the NCAA.
James Wiseman, the top-ranked freshman in college basketball and potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, was deemed ineligible by the NCAA, but played in his team’s next two games after strong support from his university. Next, the Memphis Tigers’ star center was hit with a 12-game suspension from the NCAA. On Dec. 19, the freshman told Memphis he was leaving the university to instead sign with an agent, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
The Tigers’ big man found himself at the center of the sport’s biggest controversy after a bizarre situation saw him appear in a Tennessee court one hour before starring in a blowout win over Illinois-Chicago. The entire country was watching to see what happened next amid an ongoing battle for athletes’ rights and NCAA reform.
Wiseman was the headliner of the No. 1 recruiting class in the country put together by head coach Penny Hardaway. Days after the 7’ center was brilliant in his debut vs. South Carolina State, Wiseman and Memphis were notified by the NCAA that he was likely ineligible. Instead of sitting him, Memphis decided to fight back. Wiseman played against UIC and Memphis’ close loss to Oregon before the school finally decided to sit him.
How did this mess happen? This is everything you need to know about Wiseman’s eligibility battle with the NCAA that ended with the star freshman leaving college basketball.
Why did the NCAA rule Wiseman ineligible?
Wiseman’s family allegedly accepted $11,500 from Hardaway at the onset of his junior year of high school.
Before Hardaway became head coach at Memphis ahead of the 2018-19 season, he was coaching at the high school level at Memphis East. Hardaway won consecutive state championships in Tennessee before convincing Wiseman, the No. 1 recruit in America, to transfer into the school from Nashville. Hardaway provided the money to help with moving expenses for the family.
What was James Wiseman’s punishment?
Wiseman essentially got suspended one game for every thousand dollars his family accepted. In addition to the 12-game suspension, the NCAA said Wiseman must donate $11,500 to charity. What the hell?
NCAA also says Wiseman "must donate $11,500 to a charity of his choice." Wiseman will be cleared to play on Jan. 12 at South Florida. https://t.co/PCNVC5V44u
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) November 20, 2019
What is Hardaway’s role in the Wiseman situation?
The NCAA has identified Hardaway as a booster for Memphis. You can find the NCAA’s definition of a booster here. A key part: “Only institutional staff members are permitted to recruit prospective student-athletes. Generally, NCAA rules prohibit anyone else from contacting (calling, writing or in-person contact) prospects or the prospect’s relatives or guardian for recruiting purposes.”
Hardaway donated $1 million to the university in 2008 for a new sports hall of fame. Hardaway starred as a player for the school in the early ‘90s before going on to an iconic NBA career.
Why did Wiseman play against UIC and Oregon?
The NCAA wants to think it’s the police, but it’s not. There’s nothing they could do to prevent Wiseman from playing.
When the NCAA tells Memphis that Wiseman is ineligible, it is merely making a suggestion. The actual determination of an athlete’s eligibility has to be made by the university president. Schools always take the NCAA’s advice and sit the player for fear of retaliation by the NCAA down the road. Memphis did the opposite by telling the NCAA to get lost.
This is why it was risky/questionable for Memphis to put James Wiseman on the court tonight. Could prove costly. https://t.co/cYMs3PdHBl
— Gary Parrish (@GaryParrishCBS) November 9, 2019
Memphis felt pressured to sit Wiseman after his status became one of the biggest stories in sports.
Will Wiseman play again this season?
Now we know that he won’t.
What has Wiseman said about the situation?
Wiseman tweeted this after word came out that Memphis will sit him in games until the NCAA makes a ruling:
Keep The Faith, Trust God, Continue on my Path ✍ My Story isn’t Finished
— James Wiseman (@BigTicket_JW) November 14, 2019
Why were Hardaway and Wiseman in court?
Shorty after news of Wiseman’s ineligibility case became public knowledge, Hardaway and Wiseman appeared in a Shelby County, Tennessee court and got a judge to put an immediate temporary restraining order on the NCAA.
It appears Memphis did this to mostly cover their bases in the event that the NCAA eventually attempted to punish the program for playing Wiseman. Memphis only needs Wiseman eligible until early April at the latest when the college basketball season ends. Wiseman has since withdrawn the lawsuit.
What was Memphis’ defense?
This is a particularly complicated situation because Hardaway is a famous alum of the school who later became the program’s head coach. This infraction happened years before Hardaway or anyone else at the university knew that would happen.
This is how one of Wiseman’s attorneys responded to the allegations (via The Athletic):
“Their finding is arbitrary and capricious based on the law and the way the bylaws are written,” Randy Fishman, one of Wiseman’s attorneys, told The Athletic. “Nobody would’ve dreamed Penny would be the coach in 2019. He helped somebody out when he wasn’t the coach, not knowing he’d be the coach.”
The Wiseman family is also saying they moved from Nashville to Memphis so they could be closer to Wiseman’s sister.
How could the NCAA haved punished Memphis?
An NCAA tournament ban. Vacated wins. A suspension for Hardaway. The reduction of scholarships.
Memphis knew what it could one day be up against.
What was Hardaway saying about Wiseman’s eligibility?
Hardaway succinctly addressed the situation after Memphis’ win over UIC.
Penny Hardaway on James Wiseman: “He will continue to play.”
— John Martin (@JohnMartin929) November 9, 2019
The program has since changed course with the hope of getting Wiseman back on the floor this season.
How will this affect Wiseman’s NBA Draft stock?
It won’t. Wiseman will still be eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft. ESPN projects him to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. We had him at No. 9 in our mock draft in June.
There is value to not playing when it comes to NBA scouts and general managers assessing a prospect’s talent. Last season, Darius Garland went No. 5 overall after playing in just five games at Vanderbilt because of an injury. If anything, not playing can hide some of a prospect’s flaws during the evaluation process.
Why wasn’t Wiseman ruled ineligible sooner?
The NCAA ruled Wiseman eligible on May 29, according to a court filing. It later said his amateurism certificate was issued in error, but stood by its initial ruling.
Memphis received word on Oct. 31 that Wiseman was now likely ineligible. It’s likely that someone complained to the NCAA about Wiseman’s status for them to review his case again.
Can we see some Wiseman highlights?
Wiseman’s finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks vs. UIC. Watch his here:

WWE Hall of Famer George “The Animal” Steele died on Thursday at the age of 79. (Courtesy of WWE)
George “The Animal” Steele, the iconic World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame wrestler, passed away Thursday night at the age of 79, the WWE announced on Friday. Steele reportedly died from kidney failure and had been in and out of hospice care for nearly a year, according to TMZ.
Born William James Myers, the Michigan native received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State and master’s from Central Michigan.
Steele joined the WWE in 1967 after briefly playing football in the short-lived United Football League. Steele feuded with champion Bruno Sammartino before developing the green-tongue, turnbuckle-eating, hairy “Animal” heel gimmick he was best known for.
Steele would have a babyface run in the WWE in the mid-1980s and feuded with the “Macho Man” Randy Savage over the admiration of Miss Elizabeth, Savage’s on-screen valet and actual wife.

Steele would retire from wrestling full-time in 1988 due to Crohn’s Disease. The chronic illness forced Steele to have his colon removed in 2002.
He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1995 and made sporadic appearances for the company following his retirement.
“WWE extends its condolences to Steele’s family, friends and fans,” the company said in a statement.

College Basketball Just Started. Here’s What There Is to Know So Far.
The opening week of college basketball featured some incredible individual performances, several tremendous team wins and also a number of off-the-court issues.
Unlike last November, when a select group looked like it was destined to separate from the rest of the sport, this season could be more balanced from now until Selection Sunday, when teams are picked for the N.C.A.A. tournament.
What We Learned Last Week
Cole Anthony is appointment television. Through two games, Anthony, a 6-foot-3 guard, has already broken records at North Carolina. Anthony scored 34 points in his first game at North Carolina, more than any other freshman in his debut for the program. Anthony is also the only Tar Heels freshman to post 20 points and 10 rebounds in consecutive games. He is an early favorite for the national player of the year awards.
Shaka Smart is getting back to his roots. Smart, the Texas coach, made his name at Virginia Commonwealth by playing smaller lineups that featured four perimeter players. It looks like he’s now finally set on doing the same thing at Texas. After years of having two traditional frontcourt players on the floor at the same time, Smart appears to be committed to using the versatile 6-8 sophomore Gerald Liddell at power forward in an effort to maximize both skill and spacing. “When your second-biggest guy on the floor thinks like a guard and passes like a guard, it changes things,” Smart said. “We haven’t had the personnel to play that way the past few years.” That alignment was critical in a 70-66 win at Purdue on Saturday, especially down the stretch when Texas trailed by 5 with 3 minutes 14 seconds to play. Liddell finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
Arizona is good at basketball again. The program has had a trying two years embroiled in the sport’s corruption scandal, but the team in Tucson is back on track on the court, at least. Arizona’s 90-69 rout of Illinois on Sunday night highlighted the Wildcats’ upside, led by the talents of the freshmen Nico Mannion, Josh Green, and Zeke Nnaji. Mannion, a 6-3 point guard, has a legitimate chance to be the best freshman floor general for Arizona since Mike Bibby helped lead the Wildcats to the 1997 national title.
What We’re Looking Forward to This Week
Amid so much more, Memphis gets a litmus test against Oregon. The Tigers are playing with fire. Memphis’s decision to play the prized freshman James Wiseman on Friday, against the University of Illinois-Chicago, just hours after he was ruled ineligible by the N.C.A.A. was a step into uncertainty. Wiseman played after a judge issued a restraining order, but the school still could face penalties. The university said in a statement that the family of Wiseman accepted $11,500 in moving expenses in 2017 from Penny Hardaway, who was a high school coach then and now coaches Memphis. A court hearing is set for Nov. 18. As that plays out, the Tigers have a game on Tuesday against an Oregon team that was picked to win the Pac-12. The neutral site game should be a good test for Memphis, which lacks experience. The Tigers start five freshmen, while the Ducks’ starting perimeter has a combined 12 years of college experience.
Villanova takes its first trip to Ohio State. Villanova Coach Jay Wright and Ohio State Coach Chris Holtmann coached against each other in the Big East when Holtmann was at Butler. With an N.C.A.A. tournament feel, the game presents the first national stage for the Villanova freshman Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who had 24 points and 13 rebounds in his college debut against Army.
Michigan State-Seton Hall will be without at least one all-American. Both Michigan State and Seton Hall had a tough opening week. The Spartans didn’t play their best in a loss to Kentucky in the Champions Classic, and their home opener Sunday night came after the death of one of Cassius Winston’s brothers. Winston, an all-American last season, played. Seton Hall lost the all-American candidate Myles Powell to a sprained ankle on Saturday; he’s not expected to play against the Spartans. Both of these programs could make deep runs in March. Part of that is developing a supporting cast. Keep an eye on Jared Rhoden, a 6-6 sophomore for Seton Hall who has tallied double figures in each of his first two games.
More to Consider
If Auburn gets to the N.C.A.A. tournament for the third consecutive year, it’s going to be because of its defense. The Tigers smothered Davidson’s backcourt of Jon Axel Gudmundsson and Kellan Grady last week. “I think you need to start talking about J’Von McCormick, Samir Doughty and Isaac Okoro as one of the top defensive perimeters in the country,” Auburn Coach Bruce Pearl said. “They made a statement.” Axel Gudmundsson and Grady averaged a combined 34.2 points last season.
St. Mary’s missed the N.C.A.A. tournament in 2016 and 2018 because of a lackluster nonconference schedule. That’s why the Gaels’ win over Wisconsin last week in South Dakota was so critical. “For us, you can’t get a better win to open a season than that,” said Coach Randy Bennett, who said his team changed its scheduling in response to how the N.C.A.A. adjusted its selections for the tournament.
Games to Watch This Week
All times are Eastern.
Tuesday Oregon vs. Memphis (ESPN, 9 p.m.), Oklahoma vs. Oregon State (11 p.m., ESPN2)
Wednesday Louisiana State at V.C.U. (6 p.m., ESPN2), Villanova at Ohio State (7 p.m., FS1)
Thursday Michigan State at Seton Hall (8:30 p.m., FS1).

Russell Westbrook trades: Hornets, Houston Rockets, Bulls, Cavaliers, Miami Heat and more
This NBA Free Agency window has been one of the most memorable ones in a few years. The window kicked off in spectacular fashion on Sunday, with a flurry of trades taking place is just hours after the window was open. And that trend has carried on in the following days.
Come Saturday, one would’ve thought that the window was finally done, but no. Another blockbuster move took place- Kawhi Leonard signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. And there may be one final big move to go- Russell Westbrook is set to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It is time to bring out ESPN’s Trade Machine, and find out which teams can land Westbrook:
#1 Westbrook off to the Hornets
While I DO NOT want to trade Westbrook, my friend made this and said to include two of Charlotte’s first rounders. How do y’all feel about this??? pic.twitter.com/cAlaghvSgs
— Tyler (@t_blac3) July 6, 2019
That is a decent trade right there! Oklahoma get some young assets that they could use for their rebuild, as well a few first rounders. And Westbrook gets to play under Michael Jordan.
#2 Houston Rockets get to pair Westbrook and Harden
Westbrook to Houston. Makes the most sense like this. OKC sheds 25 million a yr after Gordon leaves or they can trade at deadline. Throw in some picks for OKC. Win win for both teams. pic.twitter.com/1xZL2bkTji
— Randy Douglas (@Sbreezy327) July 7, 2019
In fact, there is actual interest in Westbrook from the Rockets. But just not a substantial one. This trade works out pretty well for the Thunder, though.
#3 The Bulls land Westbrook
Westbrook in Chicago? Time Bulls compete. Otto gives OKC pathway to cap relief, and youth in White, or a non-point if 3rd team involved given Gilgeous-Alexander trade. Bulls: Westbrook, LaVine, Valentine, Markennnan, Carter OKC: Gilgeous-Alexander, White, Otto, Gallinari, Adams pic.twitter.com/emy0XiNta9
— Da BballJones (@DBballjones) July 7, 2019
Not a particularly nice trade for the Thunder, they will be looking for better assets here.
#4 Westbrook to Cavaliers
Heard that Westbrook could possibly be traded after this Paul George. Would you do this trade Cavs fans? (I would also send a 1st round pick or two if we have any) pic.twitter.com/47eGHTPSyQ
— Josh P (@perpanator) July 6, 2019
All you see here are expiring contracts, so the Cavaliers may not find this trade as attractive.
#5 Miami Heat get Westbrook
Here is a trade I drew up for the #Heat to acquire Westbrook
In this trade I have the #Heat trading 3 first round picks as well (2020,2022,2024) pic.twitter.com/QmflLJlKxF
— Dylan Mehl (@SHSDylan) July 6, 2019
Pat Riley has a big array of contracts on his books, so various trade deals could be proposed here.
#6 The Mavericks land Westbrook
I think that’d be great though I’m not sure Miami still wants to do it.
Flipping Lee and Hardaway (only big enough $) for Russell outright seems dumb. But the Trade Machine likes it for Dallas! Maybe we can trade Westbrook to someone else later. New York or Phoenix maybe? pic.twitter.com/VeMaEC6dnh
— MavsRacoon (@MaverickRacoon) July 6, 2019
A trade that the Dallas Mavericks will surely love.
#7 Westbrook off to Orlando
Should the @OrlandoMagic trade for Russell Westbrook? pic.twitter.com/sEaR89RsdZ
— Ace Boogie (@NewStripeCity) July 7, 2019
Another move for Markelle Fultz, and the Thunder get a decent player in Aaron Gordon as well. An all-round good trade for them.
#8 Westbrook to DC
This one I don’t like as much. Could the #Wizards go all in on a Beal/Westbrook combo? (Wiz throwing in lots of picks) pic.twitter.com/01nW5Tg007
— NBATradeIdeas (@NBATradeTalk1) July 7, 2019
Remains to be seen how John Wall performs post his Achilles injury, but beyond that, a lot of first-rounders in this deal for the Thunder.

James Wiseman’s NCAA eligibility, explained
James Wiseman is at the center of the NCAA’s biggest controversy.
This is what you need to know about the Memphis center’s eligibility status.
The top ranked freshman in college basketball and potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft has been deemed ineligible by the NCAA, but continues to play after strong support from his university.
Memphis Tigers center James Wiseman now finds himself at the center of the sport’s biggest controversy after a bizarre weekend that saw him appear in a Tennessee court one hour before starring in a blowout win over Illinois-Chicago. The entire country is watching to see what happens next amid an ongoing battle for athletes’ rights and NCAA reform.
Wiseman was the headliner of the No. 1 recruiting class in the country put together by head coach Penny Hardaway. Days after the 7-foot center was brilliant in his debut vs. South Carolina State, Wiseman and Memphis were notified by the NCAA that he was likely ineligible. Instead of sitting him, Memphis decided to fight back.
How did this mess happen and where does it go from here? This is everything you need to know about Wiseman’s eligibility battle with the NCAA.
Why did the NCAA rule James Wiseman ineligible?
Wiseman’s family allegedly accepted $11,500 from Hardaway at the onset of his junior year of high school.
Before Hardaway became head coach at Memphis ahead of the 2018-19 season, he was coaching at the high school level at Memphis East. Hardaway won consecutive state championships in Tennessee before convincing Wiseman, the No. 1 recruit in America, to transfer into the school from Nashville. Hardaway provided the money to help with moving expenses for the family.
What is Penny Hardaway’s role in the Wiseman situation?
The NCAA has identified Hardaway as a booster for Memphis. You can find the NCAA’s definition of a booster here. A key part: “Only institutional staff members are permitted to recruit prospective student-athletes. Generally, NCAA rules prohibit anyone else from contacting (calling, writing or in-person contact) prospects or the prospect’s relatives or guardian for recruiting purposes.”
Hardaway donated $1 million to the university in 2008 for a new sports hall of fame. Hardaway starred as a player for the school in the early ‘90s before going on to an iconic NBA career.
Why is Wiseman still playing?
The NCAA wants to think it’s the police, but it’s not. There’s nothing they can do to prevent Wiseman from playing.
When the NCAA tells Memphis that Wiseman is ineligible, it is merely making a suggestion. The actual determination of an athlete’s eligibility has to be made by the university president. Schools always take the NCAA’s advice and sit the player for fear of retaliation by the NCAA down the road. Memphis is doing the opposite and telling the NCAA to get lost.
This is why it was risky/questionable for Memphis to put James Wiseman on the court tonight. Could prove costly. https://t.co/cYMs3PdHBl

Why were Hardaway and Wiseman in court?
Shorty after news of Wiseman’s ineligibility case became public knowledge, Hardaway and Wiseman appeared in a Shelby County, Tennessee court and got a judge to put an immediate temporary restraining order on the NCAA.
It appears Memphis did this to mostly cover their bases in the event that the NCAA eventually attempts to punish the program for playing Wiseman. Memphis only needs Wiseman eligible until early April at the latest when the college basketball season ends. It will try to string out the case with a court injunction until then.
What is Memphis’ defense?
How could the NCAA punish Memphis?
An NCAA tournament ban. Vacated wins. A suspension for Hardaway. The reduction of scholarships.
Memphis knows what it could one day be up against.
What is Hardaway saying about Wiseman’s eligibility?
Hardaway succiently addressed the situation after Memphis’ win over UIC.
Penny Hardaway on James Wiseman: “He will continue to play.”

How will this affect Wiseman’s NBA draft stock?
It won’t. Wiseman will still be eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft regardless of if the NCAA deems him ineligible for the current college basketball season. ESPN projects him to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. We had him at No. 9 in our mock draft in June.
Even if Memphis’ president reverses court and sits Wiseman, don’t expect it to negatively impact his draft stock too much.
Can we see some James Wiseman highlights?
Wiseman’s finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks vs. UIC. Watch his here:
youtube
Wiseman had 28 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in his debut vs. South Carolina State:
youtube
What does Memphis’ upcoming schedule look like?
Nov. 12 vs. Oregon
Nov. 16 vs. Alcorn State
Nov. 20 vs. Little Rock
Nov. 23 vs. Mississippi
Will Wiseman continue to play for Memphis?
For now, it sure looks like it.
