I haven't found out yet what happened to Randall or any of that, I'm only a little bit into the flashback sequence in Miracle Mask, but there's a really clear throughline that's making me emotional about Kat and her story.
Kat considers herself a world-class puzzle solver and loves them. She learned how to love them from her father, who taught her how to solve them and left it behind with her when it was his time to go
But what we see in MM is how he came to become a world-class puzzle solver who loves them. He learned how to love them from Randall, who taught him how to solve them and left it behind with him when it was his time to go
And that's not the only example of this!
He gave her her top hat, which matches his, which was a gift from Claire. He also taught her how to be an English gentlewoman, like how he is an English gentleman, which is another thing that Claire started.
So much of who Katrielle comes from who her father was, and so much of that comes from those that he loved and lost but still found a way to live on in his actions and character, which made him who he was so he could love his daughter and leave her with his legacy, and all any of us are is an amalgamation of those who loved us, who in turn are the amalgamation of those who loved them, and so on and so forth, and I think that's beautiful.

combed through the dark trenches of my first tumblr blog to search for obscure/vintage layton posts and found this tiny fullbody sprite reacreation i did of randall back in 2015 as a freshly 17 youngster. i'd first gotten miracle mask for christmas in 2012, a few months after its initial american release, but years later i still found myself replaying it because it's that special to me! (the sprite in question coming from a section of bonus puzzles, where specifically i cannot remember)
comparing the original game sprite with my younger self's attempts at a full sprite you can see it wasn't completely accurate. a lot of inconsistent colors and missing shadows (i'm wondering if i eyeballed these colors or if i colorpicked them from something else?)
of course i can't post this without acknowledging my 17 year old self calling 17 year old randall his husband which is beyond adorable. oh my god i was smitten with him even as a kid.
perhaps i'll take a crack at the rest of those sprites i mentioned in the original post now that i have a computer and don't have to eyeball the colors on an ipad lol

This might be a strange question but is there a divide between editing and writing when it comes to comics? I was having a conversation with a friend about female comic writers and I realized that (at least in the 80s and 90s) I can think of a lot more women who were editors than writers. That seems strange to me since I can think of a lot of fluidity between creative and editorial department when it comes to male writers, but I am probably missing some context, and I was wondering if you knew anything about the behind-the-scenes.
Oh, this is an interesting question. I don't have any insider knowledge on this, unfortunately, but you're correct: there is definitely something there.
I suspect, especially around DC, some of it is going to be the influence of people like Jenette Kahn and Karen Berger offering opportunities for employment, and some of it is good old misogyny at work.
Editor is an out-of-the-spotlight role on a book. Sure there are some who are particularly well known, particularly at Executive Editor level, but a lot of the general editorial work, especially at Assistant Editor level, is scutwork doing things that are incredibly necessary but not really appreciated by readers.
There is also the dynamic that editor and editing falls into the pre-computer category of typist work, and thus for women. It was generally expected pre-word processing software that a good typist would just...fix spelling and grammar, and in some circumstances were doing full edits, rewording things to make them more clear, providing plotting ideas and so on. There's a long history of unacknowledged women in academia who 'typed' their husband/father/brother's work but in modern terms would be considered a full collaborator in the process.
It does not shock me, as I started sorting through lists of female editors and executive editors, that a bunch of them are or were married to male comics writers. These three popped out at me, but they're not the only ones:
Barbara Randall Kesel
Anne Busiek (worked on various Astro City)
Alisa Bendis (edited her husband's work under the Jinxworld imprint)
Karen Berger, from some articles I've read, actively incubated and fought for women to get opportunities to edit and write comics. Vertigo ended up being her very own territory and you see a bunch of women working for it. (Also her own pregnancy and maternity leave probably contributed to changing the direction of comics in the early 1990s, but this is not the time to relitigate Armageddon 2001 and War of the Gods)
But yeah, I think the transition between editor and writer was less common for women in the 1990s, because of the dynamic where women were often only offered writing opportunities on female-led books. Mindy Newell worked on Wonder Woman and Catwoman stories. Barbara Randall Kesel started out on Batgirl, then got Hawk and Dove (with Dawn Granger!) collaborating with her then-to-be husband, and has noted that she pushed Karl to include more depth in Lois Lane.
I think it's partly that it's harder to make that leap into the spotlight if you are mostly only offered writing opportunities with someone else plotting, on female-led titles. There's just fewer chances available!
And we see this all the way to the present day: it's still notable for a woman to get to write a run on a male-led book, to the point that we still have titles where no woman has ever written one. Batman famously has never had a woman write a run on it (Devin Grayson has a single issue and one annual), and Detective Comics didn't have one until Mariko Tamaki in 2022 (Devin again has 2 earlier issues, because of the way NML stories were divvied up). I don't think a woman has ever had a run on The Flash or Green Lantern. I believe Green Arrow has had only one, with Julie and Shawna Benson in 2018, and equally I'm pretty sure Kelly Sue DeConnick was the first to get a run on Aquaman in 2018. I don't think a woman has written a Justice League title outside of fills (unless we are counting Devin Grayson writing JLA/Titans).
So yes, basically. Editor is seen as a lesser job (unless you get to the top of the greasy pole and get to be a group editor or executive editor, where you're setting direction for titles, and even then it's underappreciated and the writer gets the the majority of praise/condemnation for the title).
#I know I have some people with more insider knowledge than I have on this issue#so people who want to chime in with whether or not I'm significantly off base would be appreciated

Bobbi Brown
Bobbi appeared in dozens of men's magazines from around 1991 though to 1995, mostly photographed by Suze Randall and J Stephen Hicks, with a shoot from the latter appearing inside and on the cover of the August 1991 issue of Penthouse, though she was not Pet of the Month. Several lesbian themed softcore pictorials appeared in Penthouse and other magazines as well a softcore boy/girl pictorial. Bobbi is often confused with Bobbie Brown, sometimes credited as Bobbie Brown-Lane, who is an American actress, model, and former beauty pageant contestant who famously appeared in the video for Warrant's song "Cherry Pie" and married the band's lead singer. Due to the confusion in the public's mind about the name, Bobbie Brown sued Penthouse because they used Bobbi's name in the magazine. Confusing things further is a second Penthouse Pet named Robin Brown who appeared in the April 1992 edition of Penthouse. As a result, there isn't much reliable information about Bobbi Brown on the internet.

And snippet 2 here
And snippet 3 here
Just a short one, here.
“Hey, hey, hey…! Woah there, lad!” Hob says as he is almost bowled over by the little boy running full pelt round the corner. He drops his brushes with a clatter, but manages to catch the lad’s arm to stop him from bouncing off of his midriff and falling back on the cobbles.
The boy gives an instinctual shove at Hob, a sob tearing out his throat, before he looks up and Hob recognises Morpheus’s little charge, red faced from exertion and blotchy with emotion. “Alex?” he says with worried bemusement. “What’re you doing here?”
“I HATE HIM!” Alex shouts up at Hob, face crumpling in anguish. “I hate him. I HATE him!” He tries to barrel past Hob, but Hob spins him round and drops to his knees. He holds Alex by the shoulders, and speaks soothingly to him to try and calm him down and understand what has happened to upset him so.
“Alex!!” Just then, Randall comes skidding round the corner, looking equally as red-faced and rumpled as his brother, though he is not crying at least. “Oh, Mr- Hob!” he says in surprise, “Have you seen.-ah!” Randall’s shoulders sag with relief as he spots his brother peeping out from behind Hob’s head. “Alex! Thank goodness!! Never run away like that again.” he shouts, then looks pained and guilty when Alex hides his face in Hob’s chest and wails. “Ah, Alex I’m sorry-!”
“Where’s Morpheus?” Hob asks Randall. He gathers Alex into his chest and the boy sags against him, no longer trying to get away or fighting, but sobbing quietly. There was no way his mysterious friend would have let these two boys go haring off into the East End docks alone and so upset, but equally he couldn’t fathom why they would be here without him at all.
“He has his morning off every second Tuesday,” Randall mumbles. “We’ve been with Father.”
Ah. Well that might explain a few things.
“Alright,” Hob says, squeezing Alex before standing and lifting the boy into his arms. Five is a trifle old to be carried in this day and age, but Hob doesn’t give two hoots for what people thought. Alex is no weight at all, and is still far too distressed to walk on his own two feet.
“Randall, if you can carry my brushes, I’ll walk you both home. It’s gone noon and no doubt Morpheus expects you back? Lets not have him worry. I was going to the Lord Mayor’s-filthy chimneys, he’s got- but a little detour to Cherry Tree Lane won’t be an issue.”

Randall Clark's Entry - October 29th 2077
Char, must've said this out loud a thousand times walking here. Maybe writing it will feel more like you heard.
You were right.
I was north of Spanish Fork. Took the 77 along Provo Bay to steer clear of town. Would've been home in an hour. Engine died, truck just stopped. So did a Chryslus in the other lane. Knew right away.
First nuke hit SLC inside a minute. I was looking South - Lucky Man! Flash behind me so bright world looked on fire. Old couple from the Chryslus starts screaming they can't see.
Didn't watch you die, Char. Saved my eyes. Counted 12 more flashes next 7 minutes. Ground shook each time, 18 seconds later.
When nothing hit for half an hour, took a look. Globe of fire where you and Alex died. Didn't kid myself.
Didn't know what to do. Grabbed my pack and rifle.
Saw to the old couple. Sat them up against car, let them hold and comfort each other. Told them I was going to get help, everything be okay. One bullet through both heads. Instant.
Five day hike back to Zion.
You told me. Stop running off to the wild. Man belongs with his family.
You were right. You were right. You were right. You were right. Wasn't there to hold you and my boy. Died without me. Never touch you or him again.
Should shoot myself. What I deserve.
Can't. Maybe soon.

Here's my poster of my official version of my version for my DisneyElseWorld's Pixar's...
INSIDE OUT 2!
I saw the new Inside Out 2 trailer, and they made Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy bad by betraying the old emotions. Lots of crazy stuff is about to happen! We don't know what's going on, lots of details are there too. But what would the ElseWorld version be like?
SO!
For my idea. I have 6 new emotions, one of my OC emotions I've created like, Courage, Surprise, Pride, Trust, Frustration, and Shy.
MAIN VILLAIN
I am using on of my oc villains, Spite, to be the main villain of the AU second movie.
OTHER CHARACTERS
Characters like Nia, the assistant of Spite, she runs the business with him but she tries to avoid him to help others. Bud, Courage's blood cell buddy, he doesn't speak but he's sweet, nervous, cute and got some attitude. And Brain, the big boss of Riley's mind, and the emotions need his help to stop Spite.
What New Places Would the Emotions Go To?
In this AU, far from HQ and Long Term Memory, instead of the back of the mind being empty, there is a huge mind-filled city called Mindtopia, aka, The City of Riley, where everything in the mind has everybody for Riley's Inner Workings in her mind. That also includes Headquarters. And guess what, they're not the only company, there's also banks, council buildings, restaurants, malls, houses, apartments, and everything for Mind Workers after they work at Long Term Memory. And The Mind Councilman, Chairman, is the Mind Prime Minister.
Returning Cast like...
Amy Poehler as Joy, Lewis Black as Anger, Bill Hader as Fear (YES! I'm bringing Bill Hader back! He's so much funnier then I expected), But here comes my official recast for Disgust and Sadness.
Selena Gomez (the Hotel Transylvania films, Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place, and Hulu's Only Murders In The Building) as Disgust, and Melissa McCarthy (Spy, The Boss, and The Hangover Part 3) as Sadness,
Kensington Tallman as Riley, Diane Lane as Mrs. Andersen, and Kyle MacLachlan as Mr. Andersen.
With All-Star Cast like...
Jason Segel (The Muppets, and, the Despicable Me films) as the new outside leader emotion known as Courage, Charlie Day (the LEGO Movie, and Pacific Rim films, and The Super Mario Bros Movie) as Surprise, Kate McKinnon (Ferdinand, DC League Of Super Pets, and Saturday Night Live) as Frustration,
Zach Woods (The Office, & The LEGO Ninjago Movie) as Trust, Randall Park (the Ant-Man, and Aquaman films) as Pride, Tituss Burgess (Central Park, Angry Birds Movie, and Spellbound) as Shy, Wendi McLendon Covey (Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, and Elemental) as the sweet and huge, Mother Esteem, Eugene Levy (Finding Dory, and Schitt's Creek) as the mind algorithm boss of Riley Andersen's Mind/City of Riley known as Brain, Nathan Fillion (DCU's Superman, Monsters University, and Cars 3) as the very evil and hilariously charming, but pretty badly whiny, Spite,
Ilana Glazer (Netflix's Green Eggs and Ham) as Spite's sarcastic female assistant, Nia, Dan Fogler (the Fantastic Beasts films, and The Walking Dead) as Mind Councilman Chairman, Ken Jeong (Transformers: Dark of The Moon, The Hangover, and Scoob!) as Yes Man, Alan Tudyk (the Moana, Frozen, Zootopia, and Wreck-it Ralph films) as Mind Gate Guard Jimmy, Peter Sohn (Ratatouille, Monsters University, and The Good Dinosaur) as the emotions new best blood cell companion named Bud, Stephen Root (Barry, King of the Hill, and Finding Nemo) as Doc Stem,
Yvette Nicole Brown (Disenchanted, and Avengers: Endgame) as Riley's middle school P.E. coach, Mrs. Roberts, Brady Noon (Good Boys, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Jordan, Haley Tju (Amphibia, and Big Hero 6: The Series) as Kelli, Raymond Ochoa (The Good Dinosaur) as Riley's bully, Francis, Josh Peck (Drake & Josh, and Drillbit Taylor) as Francis' bully friend Lars, Bruce Campbell (the Evil Dead, and Spider-Man films, and Sky High) as Dale Daley, Chris Parnell (Archer, and Saturday Night Live) as Geoff James,
Bobby Moynihan (Hoppers, and IF) and Paula Poundstone (Home Movies) as The Forgetters, Paula Pell (Sisters, and Netflix's Big Mouth) as Mom's Anger, Flea (The Wild Thornberries) as Mind Cop Jake, Carlos Alazraqui (Fairly OddParents) as Dad's Anger, Dave Goelz and Frank Oz (the Muppets films and Sesame Street) as Mind Cop Frank & Mind Cop Dave, John Ratzenberger (the Toy Story and Cars films) as Fritz, and The Lonely Island (Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg) (Hot Rod, and Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers) as Imaginary Cupid Singers.

A Rescue Chapter 27
AO3
“Are you relieved because you don’t want kids or just not with her?” she is looking out the window at the beauty of the countryside and not at him.
“Oh, I want weans just not with her. I want to raise children with someone I love deeply. That isn’t Laoghaire.”
She nods and turns to face him. “Yet you slept with her.”
He cannot deny the truth of that. A sigh and he attempts to explain. “There is a difference between lust and love, eh? I did fancy myself in love with her. I now know it was just lust.”
She turns back towards the scenery and there is silence for a few kilometers.
“How did you figure out the difference? Was it just her cheating?”
“Nae, it was…” he edits himself. No Jamie, you can’t say that. Not yet, “the distance her betrayal caused. I realized that I didn’t mind not seeing her. So, it couldn’t be love. Since, with time and distance, I have come to know that I don’t even like her.”
“Neither do I. My uncle taught me to try to see the good in everyone. ‘There is a spark of it in all you meet,’ I recall him saying. But with her, the Randall’s , I am not sure he was right about that.”
“I get your point,” he turns into the roadway that leads home, “my dad’s was, ‘All the good comes from God. If you don’t see something good in them, they need God,’ I try to remember that. It isn’t always easy.”
“No. When did you lose him?”
“I was eight, Jenny, ten. Then the bastard came. I knew, she knew but mam needed something. She thought she found it with him. Instead he shattered her,” he swallows hard and shakes his head, “enough of that, eh? This is a good day. A day to celebrate.”
“Yes,” her smile is genuine. It lifts his heart, “no more talk of them. You are not the father and it is a glorious thing!”
He is laughing when he pulls into the long lane and under the arches. Parking, he opens her door, lifting her out of the seat and then twirling her around. They are both laughing.
That is how Ellen and Jenny find them.

As a Stupidist, I’ve found it useful to hold two (harmless and arbitrary) “beliefs”: one that can logically be argued to be true, and one which is both logically and intuitively absurd. These aren’t “beliefs” in the popularly understood sense of the word - certainly not actual philosophical positions to stand and die for! - Rather, think of pictures or sticky notes on one’s desk: reminders of the things or people closest to us.
Take as an example these two beliefs: (1) that technical understanding and mastery of the natural world translate into the ability to project indvidual/community will onto one’s surroundings; and (2) that the Gallic provinces consist entirely of cured pork bits. The second is obviously absurd - Gallia sit omnis divisa in partes tres, but those partes are geographical delineations of land, and land is clearly not made of processed pork. One could make the argument that this land could be, say, traded for barrels of pork; or that, like stardust, all pork eventually decays or is shat out and turned into soil. It may be that in some obscure medieval document, the entire region was declared to be made out of pork! In similar fashion, (1) appears to be self-evident: the development of the arts and sciences allowed e.g. Galileo to espy the moons of Jupiter, or Toby Fox to create Undertale. And yet certain animals and humans can do things effortlessly or instinctually that most people would struggle to do even with training (consider hunting dogs bred solely for spotting/tracking/retrieving, or savants like Mozart and von Neumann who played with notes/numbers like they were Lego blocks).
I think this disparity handily illustrates the principle of caution: we are meatsacks who default to heuristics and pattern-matching, and it is easy to fall into generalizations or jump to conclusions. Perhaps we missed an angle, or forgot to drop a zero in the calculations - whatever the case, it is prudent to remember that we are but meatsacks, and approach truth-seeking with thoroughness and respect.
As meatsacks, we are inevitably going to mess this up somehow - maybe due to lack of caffeine, or lack of perspective! This brings us to the principle of compassion, which, put reductively, is: we’re trying to do the best we can with the best we’ve got, and as hunks of meat, that’s not a lot. But we can watch each other’s backs and pull each other up, which is a damn lot more useful than pissing on someone for not knowing how to pull themselves out of the mud. The keyword here is “growth mindset”. I’m a huge believer in the “lucky 10,000” concept popularized by Randall Munroe: at any given time, there are about 10,000 people in your continent of choice who aren’t aware of <common thing>. Why ridicule them for not knowing <common thing>, when you could celebrate them being the lucky 1 out of 10,000 to discover it!
And this brings us to the third leg of the Stupidist tripod: curiosity. What queer meatbags we are, that we have gained the ability to look upon our world and comprehend it. And how much there is to comprehend! The great temptation of adulthood is to pick a lane and stay in it; to affiliate oneself with tribal beliefs; to trade the promises of discovery for the secure stasis of prestige. All well and good, until the ever-changing world shifts under our feet, and we are forced to remember how to wonder, how to adapt.
I started out this essay wanting to talk about core conflicting beliefs, and ended up with a primer on Stupidism. I guess that’s just how the ball rolls! Feel free to adopt the conflicting beliefs above, which, since they’re quite lengthy, I’ll sum them up for you:
Knowledge is power.
France is bacon.

“Farewell, Timothy Riley’s Bar," Lane said softly. "Home of the nickel beer. Snooker emporium. Repository of Bluebird records, three for a dime. We honor you and your passing. Farewell. Farewell, Timothy Riley—and terraplanes and rumbleseats and saddle shoes and Helen Forrest and the Triple-C camps and Andy Hardy and Lum ‘n’ Abner and the world-champion New York Yankees! Rest in peace, you age of innocence—you beautiful, serene, carefree, pre-Pearl Harbor, long summer night. We’ll never see your likes again.” ― Rod Serling, Rod Serling's Night Gallery

“It was now December 7, 1941; the date that Franklin D. Roosevelt was destined to declare would live in infamy.” ― Randall Wallace, Pearl Harbor

“At 1:23pm Zeros were approaching Pearl Harbor where it was 7:53am. At that moment the flight commander radioed Admiral Nagumo TORA, TORA, TORA@ The repeated code word, meaning "tiger," stood for 'We have succeeded in surprise attack'." Two minutes later torpedo bombers began diving on Battleship Row.” ― John Willard Toland, Infamy: Pearl Harbor and its Aftermath

“I thought of a remark . . . that the United States is like a 'gigantic boiler. Once the fire is lighted under it there is no limit to the power it can generate.' Being saturated and satiated with emotion and sensation, I went to bed and slept the sleep of the saved and thankful.” ― Winston S. Churchill
